annual collection in its behalf from the ,church of the ,pilgrims1 ,brooklyn1 ,n4,y4 ,this sermon appeared in print in one of the daily papers1 and attracted the attention of a benevolent gentleman deeply interested in the ,christian education of the colored people1 who was so impressed with the great value of the address1 that he has furnished the ,association with the means to print a large edition for general circulation4 ,this we have done1 and we presume that already1 many of our readers have had the opportunity of reading this eminently wise and timely utterance on one of ,america's greatest problems4 ,should any one desire an extra copy1 we will gladly furnish it on application4 ,although the discourse has had large circulation1 we cannot resist the temptation to extract a few of its forcible utterances on some very important points4 ,permanent popular liberties have their only sure foundation in sound moral conditions practically universal4 ,we must secure these among those to whom we have given the ballot1 and who are to be henceforth citizens with ourselves4 ,otherwise1 we are building our splendid political house on the edges of the pestilential swamp from which fatal miasmatic odors are rising all the time4 ,yes1 we are building our house on piles driven into the thick ooze and mud of the pestilential swamp itself4 ,we are building our cities1 which we think are so splendid1 and which are so in fact1 as men built ,herculaneum and ,pompeii1 on a shore which ever and anon trembled with earthquake1 over which was hung the black flag of ,vesuvius1 and down upon which rolled1 in time1 the lava floods that burned and buried them4 ,we have got to meet this immense problem1 which is not far off1 but right at hand2 which is not a problem of theory1 or of distant history1 but of practice and fact2 and which concerns not the well-being alone1 but the very life of the nation4 ,noble men and women at the ,south are engaged in it already1 with all their hearts2 and we must help1 mightily6 ,it would be the craziest folly of the age for us to be indifferent to it4 ,some men may say1 perhaps1 ,but this is a work that cannot be done4 ,it is too radical and vast to be hopefully attempted4 ,nonsense6 ,there is no work for the kingdom of ,god and the glory of ,his name1 which cannot be done6 ,with the ,gospel in our hand1 we can do everything4 ,there has been a good beginning made already4 ,this ,society1 to which we are to contribute to-day1 the ,american ,missionary ,association1 has four established colleges1 three of which are entirely ,,in ,a ,,nutshell4 ,,which ,,is ,,the ,,wiser ,,way8 ,there are some people who seem to see only the ignorance and vice of the ,negro1 and the inveterate race-prejudice against him2 or at least they appear to be so occupied in dilating upon these hindrances that they have no time to devote to their removal1 and1 so far as their influence goes1 they discourage others from doing anything4 ,on the other hand there are those who1 while they see all these difficulties1 only find in them the strongest incentives to the most earnest efforts to relieve the ,negro from them4 ,which of these two classes is the wiser8 ,some persons propose as the solution of the race problem1 disfranchisement2 and they point to the bad legislation of the blacks in ,south ,carolina and ,louisiana a quarter of a century ago1 when scarcely any of them could read1 and almost none owned property4 ,on the other hand1 there are those that are industriously trying to educate the blacks and inspiring them to the acquisition of property1 and not in vain4 ,more than two millions of the blacks can now read1 and more than two hundred million dollars' worth of property is now owned by them4 ,they are thus being prepared to vote wisely4 ,which of these two classes of persons is solving this problem to the best purpose8 ,there are other persons1 in ,congress and out1 urging the deportation of the blacks to ,africa1 a thing impossible to be done1 and1 if possible1 it would be harmful to those that were sent1 as well as useless to benighted ,africa4 ,on the other hand1 there are those who are training the colored people of this country in education1 industrial habits and stable ,christian character1 thus preparing them as missionaries to ,africa4 ,which of these two classes has the wiser theory8 99 99 99 99 99 ,,higher ,,education ,,of ,,the ,,colored ,,people4 ,the eagerness of our colored population for education is strikingly shown in the reports given on another page from our institutions in the ,south--reports of over-crowded rooms1 and students dismissed by scores1 and even hundreds1 for want of accommodations4 ,we call special attention to the report from ,fisk ,university1 in reference to the higher grades of education4 ,it will be seen that1 even in that place1 a relatively small number are in the higher classes1 and yet there is a sufficient number of these to indicate that some of the pupils are seeking what is absolutely essential to the race1 to wit1 that some should have the best education attainable4 ,while it is true of this race as of all others1 that the masses can receive only primary training in letters and in industry1 there must be some of their number who can be leaders in thought and influence4 ,no race can make progress without such leaders1 who can command the line of march4 ,there must be the inspiration that comes from the success of the leaders4 ,hooker's men did not ascend ,lookout ,mountain in a steady line4 ,there were some far ahead of others1 cheering and encouraging those following at greater or less distances1 till at length the whole array stood on the brow1 and thus won their position4 ,the warfare is different1 but human nature is the same4 ,the ,negroes are no more of equal capacity than white men1 and there is just the same call for differences in their attainments in scholarship and in general influence4 ,and if those advanced in scholarship shall have ,christian character as well as education1 it will render their leadership all the more safe for their people and the nation4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,spring without exception they are pronounced to have been the best ever held4 ,the high character of the sermons1 addresses and discussions shows that these ministers are fit leaders of the people4 ,their reports of the progress of the work among the churches is encouraging4 ,on another page of the ,,missionary will be found some brief sketches of revival scenes and of individual experience and effort4 ,this branch of the work of the ,association deserves and will receive increased attention and assistance4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,mississippi ,,immigrants4 ,we alluded in a recent number of the ,,missionary to the attractive advertisements of railroad and immigrant companies in the ,south1 and we expressed the fear that many colored people might find the change to be disappointing4 ,but the process goes on1 and the rich bottom-lands in the ,state of ,mississippi are attracting many hundreds and thousands of new settlers4 ,perhaps there is no better place to which they can go1 for there are no better lands in the ,south4 ,the great point is whether these people shall be herded together in rude homes1 tilling the soil without skill1 and rearing their children in ignorance and vice4 ,it is the part of ,christian wisdom and the duty of the ,christian churches of this land to see that the people in this densely-packed and fertile region shall be promptly met with the means of ,christian education4 ,our school at ,tougaloo should be enabled to meet in some degree the opportunity it has to prepare and furnish preachers and teachers for this growing population2 and schools and churches should be offering to this work6 ,take another fact of unusual interest in the religious life in ,new ,england4 ,five leading pastors here in ,boston chose a particular ,sabbath1 upon which they would each preach upon the ,negro ,problem4 ,several sermons were reported at length in our daily journals1 and aroused much interest and comment4 ,one found its way down into the ,south1 and was commented upon by a ,southern editor in true ,southern style4 ,hard words were used with the recklessness that characterizes ,southern editors1 and often ,northern as well4 ,the funny thing about it was1 that two gentlemen of the same name1 who are both ministers and reside in ,boston1 were confused in this comment4 ,the one1 who had recently been ,south1 but who did not preach the sermon1 was read a severe lecture1 because after partaking of the hospitality of the ,southern people1 he had spoken in so severe terms of them4 ,it was an amusing blunder1 but illustrates the fact that more and more even the ,southern editor is coming to feel the importance of ,northern criticism4 ,it is a very hopeful sign4 ,it is sometimes said that time will settle these monstrous inequalities that prevail in the ,south1 but time never settles anything4 ,mischievous forces only increase in power1 the longer they are permitted to operate4 ,there must be set in operation beneficent forces1 in order to make the element of time useful4 ,agitation is needed1 patriotic1 prayerful agitation1 and such united effort as was made in these ,boston pulpits1 helps in this agitation4 ,the new book which comes from the pen of ,g4,w4 ,cable1 under the title of ,the ,negro ,question1 puts old truth in a new dress1 and renders it more attractive and presentable4 ,if any man has the right to write upon this ,negro ,question1 it is ,mr4 ,cable4 ,if ,i had to prepare a liturgy for the ,congregational churches1 ,i would put in it the following petition3 ,from the superficial views and misleading statements of tourists through the ,south1 or those who reside in a single locality1 good ,lord1 deliver us6 ,mr4 ,cable is not of either of these classes4 ,he speaks from an intimate acquaintance with1 and a long residence in1 the ,south2 better than this1 he is familiar with the whole territory1 and not with a single locality simply4 ,this little book ought to be in the hands of every conscientious student of this ,southern problem4 ,take a single quotation3 ,to be governed merely by instincts is pure savagery4 ,all civilization is the result of subordinating instinct to reason1 and to the necessities of peace1 amity and righteousness4 ,to surrender to instinct1 would destroy all civilization in three days4 ,if1 then1 the color-line is the result of natural instincts1 the commonest daily needs of the merest civilization require that we should ask ourselves1 is it better or worse to repress or cherish this instinct1 and this color-line8 ,there are forces at work1 regenerative and ennobling1 that will lead the ,southern white people to be ashamed of their attitude toward the ,negroes1 and not the least of these are the life and works of ,mr4 ,cable4 ,a letter came into my hand1 when ,i was in the ,south1 which is not only a commentary1 but also throws a ray of sunlight where there is much darkness4 ,it was a letter from an old mistress to her former slave4 ,he is now a successful business man in ,chattanooga4 ,this earnest1 ,christian woman1 rising above her prejudices1 wrote her former slave a cordial invitation to visit her in her home4 ,her husband1 his old master1 had died in the ,confederate service4 ,she had seen her servants taken away from her through the success of the ,union armies4 ,her property had been depleted1 and her fertile plantation overrun by the loyal troops4 ,it must have been with great sadness and a bitter heart1 that she looked out upon this ruin1 wrought as she believed1 throughout the invading of the sacred soil of ,virginia4 ,but in these years that have passed1 this bitterness has largely gone1 and this sweet1 ,christian letter comes to her former slave4 ,the ex-slave told me with tears in his eyes that he paid her this visit1 and that she established4 ,our primary has numbered nearly or quite one hundred pupils4 ,the average attendance has been large and the school-room over-crowded4 ,three grades are now virtually working in the primary department4 ,we may look for a large increase of attendance in all grades next year4 ,from ,florence1 ,ala4--,we need a building if the school is to be continued4 ,we are now inconveniently twenty-eight pupils4 ,a school for more advanced pupils is needed in this part of ,mississippi4 ,we have thirty young people in school who come from the five adjoining counties4 ,they are boarding in good families and ,i have every reason to believe that they have used their time and opportunities well2 most of them are this summer to teach4 ,from ,straight ,university1 ,n4,o4--,it has been a golden year for ,straight ,university4 ,financially it has been our best year4 ,a larger proportion of students able to pay came to us4 ,we want to grow1 and have every opportunity to do so save that our quarters are too small4 ,we have turned away during the year probably two hundred applicants1 many of them for the boarding department4 ,we have had to put cots in nearly all the rooms1 packing them too full for comfort1 as it was very hard to say ,no6 to young people who came hundreds of miles and begged tearfully for admission4 ,the school has grown during the last eight years from two hundred to six hundred1 and only is not one thousand because we had no room for them4 ,our graduates are filling important positions all over the ,south4 ,several are ,superintendents in ,texas1 ,kansas1 ,mississippi and ,louisiana4 ,one holds an important office in ,honduras2 others are doing good work in ,cuba and ,mexico4 ,eight are filling important positions in this city4 ,we have no trouble in getting positions for our young people4 ,indeed1 we cannot supply as fast as demanded4 ,often as many as twenty are called for when we have none to send4 ,from ,fisk ,university1 ,nashville4--,the evidence of progress in the educational department of the ,university is found in the very marked increase of numbers in the first year of our normal course and of our college preparatory department4 ,last year there were fifteen in the first year of the latter department2 this year there are thirty-one4 ,last year there were thirteen in the first year of the normal department2 this year there are thirty-one4 ,last year there were in the normal1 college1 preparatory and college departments1 one hundred and forty-five students2 this year there are one hundred and seventy-six4 ,at the coming ,commencement1 we expect to graduate twelve young men1 and from the normal ten young women and one young man2 making a total of twenty-three4 ,this is a little more than one-sixth of the entire number of present graduates from these departments4 ,from a ,teacher in the ,tennessee ,mountains3--,let me tell you of the general interest manifest in several of the counties west and north of us in attending this school4 ,one of our students visited many cabins over the mountains during his vacation1 and found that school advantages were very scarce and poor4 ,he found poverty and ignorance of the world and of books4 ,some of the people are still using the old-time method of kindling their fires by flint and steel instead of matches4 ,he met many young people who were thirsting for books and schools1 also numbers who had struggled up through the darkness to become teachers in the neighborhoods4 ,these almost invariably wish to come to our school1 and say they shall be here as soon as their schools close4 ,many are too poor to come4 ,this is true of a large number of young girls1 who would come if they could work for their board or in any possible way pay for it4 ,whoever will provide funds to meet the expenses of these neglected girls1 and place them at our school1 and prepare them for the future duties of life1 will be doing an angelic work1 and in the end will do the greatest good that can be done to this people4 ,very much of the money spent for this mountain people will be the same as thrown away1 if this effort is not made to educate the girls4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,our ,,church ,,work4 ,a letter from ,rev4 ,f4,r4 ,sims of the ,medway ,congregational ,church1 ,mc,intosh1 ,ga41 reports that seventy persons have been added to that church on confession of faith1 within the last four months4 ,from ,knoxville1 ,tenn43--,our attendance at preaching services has been large and attentive4 ,on the second ,sabbath of ,march the members and friends made special efforts for collection and raised #cj4 ,there has been a happy increase in the ,sunday-school and the prayer meetings4 ,from ,dudley1 ,north ,carolina2--,it gives me much pleasure to write you that the ,lord has abundantly blessed us in our work at this point4 ,for three weeks a revival1 with much success1 has been going on in my church1 the ,lord has been with us disturbing the slumber of the sleeping ,christians and bringing sinners unto repentance4 ,we have ten converts and ten more seeking the ,lord4 ,we are all very much encouraged and are now looking forward for a brighter and more encouraging future4 ,from ,macon1 ,ga4--,at our last communion we baptized and received four into our fellowship on confession of faith4 ,they were all young people who are in school and full of promise4 ,others are expected to unite with us next month4 ,there have been seventeen additions to the church in the last eleven months4 ,there has been some real progress made by the church in all directions4 ,i find in our church meetings a much more gentle spirit between the members than when ,i first came here1 and ,i feel that this outward improvement is due to inward spiritual growth4 ,i can see this growth in the prayers and testimonies of the weekly prayer meetings4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,revival ,,at ,,wilmington1 ,n4,c4 ,,professor ,,george ,a4 ,,woodard4 ,the revival which took place in this church the latter part of the winter was1 in some respects1 a model one4 ,at the close of one of the ,wednesday evening prayer meetings1 our pastor spoke to us with the view of ascertaining if the church were ready for special work2 then he appointed another prayer meeting for ,friday night4 ,with faith1 and resting upon the promises of ,god1 the work was begun the next week4 ,at first the attendance was small2 but1 as the meetings continued1 the interest increased1 and it became necessary to move into the large hall of the school4 ,it was evident throughout that ,god was in the work and that the ,holy ,spirit was striving mightily with sinners4 ,a deep1 quiet emotion pervaded the meetings1 in strong contrast with the revivals held in many of the colored churches of the city1 where the excitement becomes intense1 and the confusion great4 ,their meetings are often continued until long after midnight1 in a crowded1 unventilated room1 whereas ours never closed later than ten o'clock4 ,as a result of our revival1 although other revivals were going on amongst the colored people at the same time1 upwards of forty were born into the ,kingdom1 for some of whom1 many1 many prayers had been offered up2 and all was done in answer to prayer4 ,among these were several cases of interest1 two of which ,i will mention4 ,one is that of an intelligent young man employed by the leading dentist of the city1 for whom he does the mechanical work1 which previously had to be sent ,north4 ,although of excellent character1 he was a skeptic1 reading the writings of ,ingersoll1 ,paine1 and others4 ,for years1 our teachers had taken a special interest in him laboring with him and praying for him1 that he might come into the light ,he was induced to attend these meetings1 and was finally led to believe that these things are so and to accept of the ,saviour4 ,he has gone earnestly to work to bring in other young men1 teaches in the ,sunday-school and is ready for any ,christian work4 ,the other is that of a brawny brick mason1 a great sinner1 who1 while earning excellent wages1 often failed to bring home sufficient to feed and clothe his children2 and when remonstrated with by his wife1 would answer2 ,they are your children1 you take care of them4 ,all is changed now4 ,he gets up early ,sunday mornings1 assists in getting the children ready for church1 where the family1 all neatly dressed1 can be seen regularly every ,sunday2 and in the prayer meeting his voice is usually heard4 ,as a further result of this revival1 the church has been greatly quickened1 the members have been brought closer together in brotherly love1 and ,god has given a fresh outpouring of his spirit4 ,on ,easter morning1 when a special communion service was held1 twenty-nine of the new converts were received into our church1 amidst the most touching and impressive services4 ,but the revival has not stopped with the special meetings4 ,after every ,sunday evening service1 an after-meeting has been held1 in which several have been led to give their hearts to ,god4 ,all of these meetings have been marked by the earnestness with which the church has labored for the salvation of those who were yet without1 and more fervent prayers never ascended to the throne of grace4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,facts ,,about ,,ballard ,,school1 ,,macon1 ,,ga4 ,the opening of the ,new ,year saw manifestations of the ,holy ,spirit in our midst1 and during the week of prayer there appeared to be a deep interest among the pupils4 ,our prayers seemed to take a new meaning1 and we felt that they were about to be answered4 ,nothing but ,god's ,spirit could have laid the burden of souls upon so many hearts at once1 or have bidden us speak to different ones1 while our movements were almost unknown to one another4 ,in the meetings that were held in the different rooms1 and those conducted in the ,high ,school1 which were attended by some of the pupils from other grades1 a large number expressed a desire to become ,christians2 and there were about sixty who gave their hearts to ,christ4 ,we rejoice greatly over the work of the ,spirit1 and have the assurance that there is joy in the presence of the angels of ,god4 ,the study of the ,bible is an important feature in the school work4 ,one hour each week is set apart for it4 ,a visitor1 passing from the lower grades up1 on ,friday afternoon1 would find ,bible work going on in every room4 ,the work of the little ones is largely memorizing4 ,the older ones have a systematic course4 ,the outlines of ,bible history are first carefully studied1 then the more important events and characters in detail4 ,work in map-drawing is done in connection with all the lessons4 ,a short time ago1 a middle-aged woman applied for admission to our school4 ,she had been teaching for several years1 but wanted to prepare herself for the teachers' examination by taking a short course of study4 ,she was permitted to try the sixth grade examination and failed2 then the fifth with like results2 finally she was placed in the fourth grade1 where it was discovered that she did not know the multiplication tables1 and evidently had never heard of division4 ,her knowledge of spelling would not exceed that of an average third grade pupil1 and she is called one of the best colored teachers in the county from which she came4 ,in the ,industrial ,department nearly two hundred and fifty girls sew from a half hour to an hour every day4 ,excellent work is being done and they are very much interested1 some of them begging for the privilege of sewing at other times than those designated for that purpose4 ,the industrial teacher finds difficulty in keeping the supply of work equal to the demand4 ,friends have kindly sent us donations of work1 and much more will be acceptable4 ,sheets1 pillow cases1 underclothing or patchwork1 basted ready for sewing1 will be very thankfully received4 ,the work in the sewing classes includes patchwork1 the making of dresses1 all kinds of other garments1 and quilting4--,from the ,ballard ,record4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,dreary ,,picture ,,of ,,place ,,and ,,people4 ,,by ,,an ,a4,m4,a4 ,,worker4 ,the country is low and flat1 with here and there a small elevation on which is a house or log cabin4 ,for miles and miles the country is dreary and monotonous4 ,the swamps have a funereal aspect as one looks upon the live-oak and cypress1 hung with long ,spanish moss swaying to and fro in the gentle breeze4 ,back in these pine woods are hundreds who have never seen the railroad1 a boat1 carriage1 or even a mail-bag4 ,sometimes a few will go to the little obscure station on ,saturdays and stand gazing at the train as it goes thundering by1 and many comical remarks are made1 as3 ,dat am de train 'pon which no darkies nor crackers kin ride2 dat am all de heben dat dem buckra want and am gwine ter git4 ,most of the people own their homes1 which are poorly constructed of pine poles with clapboards to cover the cracks1 through which the dampness and cold winds make it uncomfortable for the occupants1 who are seated before a clay chimney and a great lightwood fire4 ,very few of the houses have any windows4 ,a lightwood torch furnishes the light by day and by night4 ,some of them are improving each year1 but the most of them are satisfied with a roof1 and a few acres under cultivation4 ,the country people seem to be naturally religious1 as they are all church members1 are so from childhood1 and are great believers in the sperit1 which must be the evil one4 ,they are not denominational in the sense in which enlightened people are4 ,the church which allows the greatest number of privileges1 and the minister who will just be preacher and make the most noise and have the greatest number of big meetings1 are the most popular4 ,they have a burial service1 and several months or a year after1 they have a funeral service1 which is always a big time4 ,csar is considered the best preacher that has ever been in ----4 ,he comes once a month1 and cannot read a chapter2 nor need you expect me to get the one-thousandth part of the ingrejience out of this text1 is his introduction to every sermon1 but he can get up steam enough to be heard half a mile4 ,one of the preachers wanting to be known as a licentiate1 said in meeting3 ,i want you to know that ,i am a licentious preacher1--which is the truth4 ,our work has done an amount of good1 even among those outside1 and our schools and the two churches have done more good in the country than all other work combined4 ,the recent fanaticism in the county did not get one believer from our church4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,report ,,from ,,mountain ,,schools4 ,our year's work is rapidly drawing to an end4 ,the older scholars are doing well and are remaining with us through the year4 ,they certainly are gaining in this direction4 ,they become very restless as soon as it is put in crap time4 ,they sigh for the fields and shovel plow1 and often look from the school-room windows with a longing for the log cabin and the ground surrounding it4 ,in many cases we have to be very persuasive to have them remain1 yet they seem thankful for the advice and remain4 ,the older scholars seem to manifest an earnest ambition to obtain situations through the summer1 so that they may procure clothing and help pay their tuition4 ,we try as far as possible to obtain situations for our girls4 ,the better class of the people will come to us for help1 feeling that our girls have been educated in the home and kitchen4 ,in our temperance meeting last ,friday1 ,i asked the question1 ,what would you do if you were forced to take whiskey8 ,a little girl rose and said1 ,my father asked me to take some and said 'you must4' ,i said1 ',i can't4 ,god would not be pleased4' ,he said1 ',well1 ,i 'lows how you're 'bout right4 ,what a happy girl she was4 ,she knows if she will keep on refusing1 he will give up strong drink4 ,our greatest hope is in the children4 ,a poor woman had some articles of clothing to take home with her4 ,i offered to wrap her parcel in newspaper4 ,she said1 ,if you don't care1 ,i would like to have that ar paper4 ,she never has a piece except what is given her by some kind person4 ,she utterly refused to have the parcel wrapped4 ,the people use the papers to keep the cold out4 ,i have seen pieces of paper four inches square and parts of letters pasted on the boards4 ,we save all the papers we receive1 and have assisted in making many poor homes comfortable4 ,there is a good ,sunday-school in a neighboring town4 ,the people listen very attentively1 and seem to be thankful for the ,sunday-school and church services4 ,the average attendance for the last five ,sundays has been forty-two4 ,the thought of leaving this school during the summer is a cross4 ,there are fathers and mothers who are present every ,sabbath4 ,the children show the need of a good school4 99 99 99 to send a delegate to the ,st4 ,louis ,convention1 and ,i anticipate great pleasure in watching the effect upon our delegate of the enthusiasm of the ,convention and the sight of the city1 and think been seen sitting in their teacher's room1 at ,tougaloo ,university1 while she spoke to them of forming a society4 ,the members of this society1 she said1 were to do all the good they could in every way they could4 ,now1 of course1 we want a name for our society4 ,if we are going to do all the good we can1 we are worthy to be called followers of ,christ1 and as he is a ,king1 we call ourselves ,king's ,daughters4 ,when our society began1 we had but eight or ten members1 but at almost every meeting there was some one who wanted to join4 ,the meetings were carried on every ,sunday evening1 and some one of the members was appointed to lead the next meeting4 ,during the week we try in every way to do something definite to please our ,king2 to go to no place in which we would be ashamed to have our ,king see us1 and to keep no company with which we would be ashamed to have him see us4 ,our society continued to grow and prosper1 and finally the young men concluded to organize a ,king's ,sons ,society4 ,during the summer the two societies held joint meetings4 ,new members were continually joining4 ,as the meetings were new to us when we first began1 they were not as interesting as they grew to be at a later date2 but generally the time was all occupied4 ,some one would read a portion of ,scripture and offer prayer1 after which a story would be read or told by one of the members1 who had prepared it during the week4 ,then we would tell how we had kept our pledge1 or in what way we had been helped by being ,king's ,daughters4 ,sometimes1 when we had broken our pledge1 we would leave off our badge for a week4 ,the first ,sunday in every month we have what we call our consecration meeting4 ,the ,president calls the roll and each one answers by giving a verse of ,scripture1 or her experience as a ,king's ,daughter4 ,the third ,sunday in every month we elect the officers who are to serve during the next month4 ,these consist of ,president1 ,vice-,president1 ,secretary1 a sick committee1 whose business it is to visit and help any who are sick1 and a committee on invitation1 whose business it is to find out who would like to join our society4 ,they report the names at the next meeting4 ,sometimes we have a question-box into which we put questions regarding the society4 ,these are written on small slips of paper and read by one of the members4 ,if they are directed to a particular one1 that person answers them2 but if not1 any one in the ,society answers them4 ,during the school year of #ahhh1 we made a box of clothing to send to the ,indian mission school in ,dakota4 ,we would meet every ,saturday evening and sew until we had made enough to fill our box4 ,whenever one of us finished a piece we would write our name and pin it on4 ,one of our girls wanted to sew a little on every article1 so as to have her name on all of them4 ,well1 when we had finished our box of presents1 we each wrote a letter and put into it4 ,we intended to make this a ,christmas present1 but severe snow-storms prevented it from reaching its destination in time4 ,they received it about a month after ,christmas1 and the things were divided among the ,indian girls4 ,some of them wrote to us1 thanking us for the presents which they had received4 ,after our society grew to about twenty or thirty1 we were divided into tens4 ,each ten had a name given it1 such as the ,truthful ,ten1 the ,judge ,not ,ten1 the ,do ,without ,ten and the ,polite ,ten4 ,most of us find it hardest to be ,judge ,not ,tens and ,truthful ,tens4--,from the ,tougaloo ,quarterly4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,indians ,,our ,s',,kokomish ,,mission4 ,,by ,,district ,,secretary ,j4,e4 ,,roy4 ,the ,s'kokomish ,reservation is at the extreme southwestern corner of the ,puget ,sound1 where the ,s'kokomish ,river empties in1 and is three miles square1 with five thousand acres1 embracing rich bottom land and mountain timber land1 the river and the sound furnishing the best means of transportation to the market4 ,on the place ,i measured the stumps of red cedar that were eight1 ten and twelve feet in diameter4 ,the waters at hand are of the best for fishing4 ,as we--,mrs4 ,roy was with me--were going up from the river where we had been set across after a ten-mile mountain drive from ,shelton1 we saw a ,mr4 ,lo lugging a three-foot salmon into the missionary home2 and at ,olympia1 the capital1 and another point on the sound1 the fishmonger told us they did not sell such fish by the pound1 but by the piece1 twenty-five cents each4 ,when1 in #ahee1 this reservation was set apart by the treaty1 it was for the three bands of this tribe and for the ,clallams up at the entrance of the ,sound1 who1 because of variance with one of the other bands1 never left their ancestral habitation to go to the selected spot4 ,the people belonging to the ,reservation now number about six hundred and twenty4 ,the handling of the ,indians here was one of the first fruits of ,president ,grant's ,peace ,policy1 by which the agencies were assigned to the several missionary societies1 which were to nominate their respective agents4 ,this was one of those which were assigned to the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,in #ahga the ,association nominated to this ,agency ,edwin ,eells1 ,esq41 the eldest son of ,rev4 ,gushing ,eells1 ,d4,d41 who was one of the mission band that crossed the ,rocky ,mountains in #ahch1 under commission of the ,american ,board1 to be associated with ,dr4 ,marcus ,whitman's series of ,indian ,missions4 ,here is an illustration of the wisdom of that policy1 which has secured a highly successful management in all the secular1 educational and religious affairs of the ,agency1 and one that has been continued on through the changes of governmental administration1 and also one that has resulted in repeated promotions1 until now ,agent ,eells has charge of five of the seven distinct ,reservations in the ,state of ,washington4 ,his present headquarters are at the ,puyallup ,agency1 near ,tacoma1 where he has just completed an eight thousand dollar building to displace an old one1 for the ,government ,boarding ,school4 ,in all these five reservations1 lands have been secured in severalty to the ,indians1 and largely through his persistent devotion to their welfare4 ,for two or three years his father had care of the ,s'kokomish ,mission under the ,american ,missionary ,association1 and in #ahgd1 his brother1 ,rev4 ,myron ,eells1 was appointed to the same work1 in which he still abides4 ,besides the preaching1 the care of the ,sunday-school and the prayer meetings and the pastoral work1 in which he gets around among his people as often as once in a month1 he has also the charge of the ,indian ,church among the ,clallams1 near ,new ,dunginess1 the brethren of that station1 in the pastor's absence1 maintaining stated worship4 ,the people at ,s'kokomish have gotten beyond ,government payments2 they live on their own allotted lands1 in cabins or frame houses1 wearing citizens' dress1 and doing business as white men do it4 ,one of ,pastor ,eells's first ,sundays at the mission was noted for the celebration of ,christian marriage on the part of seven or eight couples who had been living together under their heathen way of taking up4 ,so they have been shuffling off their polygamy4 ,while we were there1 a man of middle life came to the pastor's house with his first wife1 to be married to her after the ,christian form1 having made a satisfactory pecuniary arrangement with the second1 who was a sister of the first4 ,in this case there were no children to complicate settlement4 ,after ,i had addressed the church upon their duty of doing more for the support of their pastor1 even as ,i had betimes had to do before in white home missionary churches1 the several responses were as decorous and assuring as could be desired4 ,as another advantage of this ,grant plan1 the ,government ,school and the ,mission are found to be in entire harmony1 the principal1 ,mr4 ,foster1 and his assistants and the industrial teacher all being ,christians and caring for the moral advancement of their pupils4 ,nor does the missionary administration come in any way to overlie the governmental4 ,from the herd of cows kept for the service of the boarding school1 neither is one set aside for the pastor's family1 nor is he allowed to buy their milk4 ,he gets his supply from outside4 ,nor does the preacher use from ,uncle ,sam's wood pile4 ,he buys from the ,indians4 ,some may wonder how a man in such a field can keep from drying up4 ,come with me into this missionary study4 ,the first thing that strikes you is a growth of ,english ivy1 from its root in the earth outside creeping through a crack in the siding and climbing up one corner and then around the upper corners of the four sides of the room4 ,that evergreen wreath is a symbol of the fresh intellectual life in that study1 which has all the air and fix of a workshop4 ,on the shelves1 besides the ordinary outfit1 there is an extensive geological collection1 which in its classification and nomenclature shows scientific investigation4 ,then there is a fine cabinet of ,indian relics and curios1 appropriate to the calling of the incumbent3 and there is a supply of ,indian literature1 historic and scientific1 out of which this student is transmuting the essential elements of the ,indian problem of the ,pacific ,northwest4 ,and so it is a small library of his own that has thus been elaborated4 ,the first is a ,history of ,indian ,missions on the ,pacific ,coast1 published by the ,american ,sunday-school ,union2 and the second is ,ten ,years at ,s'kokomish1--#ahgd-ahhd--published by our own ,congregational ,sunday-school and ,publishing ,society4 ,these books would make an enrichment of any ,sunday-school library1 giving the very essence of romance and of heroism along with ,christian instruction4 ,the others are monographs1 among them the following3 ,marcus ,whitman1 ,m4,d43 ,proofs of his ,work in ,saving ,oregon to the ,united ,states1 and in promoting the immigration of #ahdc2 ,justice to the ,indian2 ,indian ,traditions as to ,religion2 ,hand of ,god in the ,history of the ,pacific ,coast2 ,papers on the ,anthropology of the ,indians of ,washington1 as published in the ,smithsonian ,report of #ahhf-g4 ,another such monograph he now has ready for the press--,god's ,hand in the ,missions to the ,indians beyond the ,rocky ,mountains1 a paper read at the recent fiftieth anniversary of the organizing of ,dr4 ,whitman's church4 ,and beyond all this literary work is the occasional supply of destitute white congregations round about1 and service as a ,trustee of the ,pacific ,university in ,oregon1 and of the ,whitman ,college1 at ,walla ,walla1 ,washington4 ,surely in literary work1 to the names of ,jonathan ,edwards among his ,stockbridge ,indians1 and ,john ,eliot among his ,naticks1 and ,s4,r4 ,riggs among the ,dakotas1 and not a few others1 maybe added this of ,myron ,eells among the ,s'kokomish4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,chinese4 ,,jottings4 ,,by ,,rev4 ,w4,c4 ,,pond1 ,d4,d4 ,if ,i were to attempt to place before the readers of the ,,missionary1 in such setting as would be needed for a comprehension of them1 all the interesting minor facts and scenes that pass under my observation in our work1 there would be no room on its pages for anything else4 ,let me give a few examples of these4 ,a young ,chinaman is being examined with reference to baptism1 and is asked why he decided to turn from the worship of idols4 ,god is true is the reply1 a very simple reason1--a trite one possibly2 but there was something in the tone and emphasis of it which thrilled me4 ,i saw the emptyness of heathen worship at a point from which ,i had never looked at it before4 ,a ,god that is true1 that can be absolutely trusted6 ,where will you find one in any heathen ,pantheon8 ,conceive now a thoughtful1 honest man passing from the timorous worship of such gods to the rest and comfort and courage which come from knowing and trusting ,him who is true1 and you will seats1 until the mission room was so full we had to change to the large hall up stairs4 ,every night some would rise for prayers1 and we would stay and talk with them quietly1 and try to show them the way to ,jesus4 ,i think there are about forty now1 who have expressed a desire to live a ,christian life4 ,many of them are children and young people4 ,four are boys in my ,sabbath-school class4 ,we
