societies in their relations to the churches and to each other1 and the consolidation of the missionary magazines4 ,the most exciting topic discussed was that of the ,georgia ,congregational ,churches1 white and colored4 ,the result reached on this point was that the representatives of two ,district ,conferences were enrolled1 and that the representative of the ,united ,congregational ,conference of ,georgia was given a seat as an honorary member4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,colored ,,delegates4 ,the ,southern ,associations were represented by six colored delegates in the ,national ,council4 ,their bearing and ability won the respect and admiration of the whole ,council4 ,they were modest and manly in their deportment1 prudent in their counsels and very eloquent in their speech4 ,they showed themselves to be the peers of their white brethren1 and demonstrated beyond a question the capacity of the colored man for the highest intellectual and moral training4 ,they were a credit to the ,american ,missionary ,association1 whose pupils they have been1 and were a living and triumphant vindication of its work at the ,south4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,mohonk ,,conference4 ,the seventh annual gathering of this ,conference1 ,oct4 #b-e1 was the largest ever assembled4 ,among those present for the first time were ,ex-,president ,hayes1 ,gen4 ,o4,o4 ,howard1 ,gen4 ,john ,eaton1 ,prof4 ,wayland and ,dr4 ,wayland4 ,the newspaper press1 religious and secular1 was very fully represented2 ,abbott1 ,buckley1 ,dunning1 ,gilbert1 ,ward and ,wayland are perhaps best known4 ,the venerable ,judge ,strong well represented the law1 while the absence of ,senator ,dawes was sincerely regretted4 ,a marked feature of the ,conference was the presence of ,gen4 ,morgan1 ,commissioner of ,indian ,affairs4 ,for weeks prior to the meeting of the ,conference1 rumors had gone abroad that he intended to abolish the contract schools--that is1 schools of the missionary societies which the ,government by a contract agrees to assist4 ,articles had appeared in the newspapers remonstrating against this course1 and it was believed that this topic would be one of most practical interest in the ,conference4 ,the ,commissioner early in the meetings read a paper outlining his plan for the establishment of ,government schools for all ,indian children--the attendance to be compulsory4 ,the omission of all mention of the contract schools in this paper confirmed the impression to which rumor had given currency4 ,an animated discussion followed the reading of his paper1 in which the ,commissioner freely participated4 ,it appeared that he had been misunderstood--at least in so far as any immediate curtailment of the contract schools is concerned1 and he impressed the ,conference warmly in his favor as a ,christian man with broad views1 impartial and progressive4 ,he will meet1 we feel sure1 with the cordial support of all the societies engaged in ,indian educational work4 ,the final action of the ,conference was embodied in a platform substantially repeating the utterances of last year1 urging national education for all ,indian children and approving the continuance of contract schools4 ,other planks of the platform related to lands in severalty1 to the legal rights of the ,indians1 etc4--all of which were unanimously approved1 and thus once more this remarkable ,conference followed its predecessors in free and frank debate1 consummated by entire harmony in the result4 ,the varied and unique scenery of ,lake ,mohonk was shown at its best by three days of bright and bracing weather4 ,the welcome of ,mr4 and ,mrs4 ,smiley to their increased number of guests1 who taxed to the utmost limits the accommodations of the large establishment1 was as cordial and genial as ever4 ,the hearty and enthusiastic vote of thanks1 the only compensation permitted1 was a far less reward than the gratification of their own benevolent feelings in doing good2 and that gratification is probably to be enhanced by the calling together of another ,conference in the early summer in behalf of a still larger class of our needy fellow-citizens than the ,indians4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,notes ,,from ,,new ,,england4 ,a good friend of the ,american ,missionary ,association in a ,new ,england village recently greatly stirred up the interest of the people in behalf of our work1 through a missionary society which she organized among the children4 ,they had meetings for sewing1 preparing articles for a box1 and then a fair1 in which they sold other articles that they had made1 out of which they gathered a considerable sum of money4 ,the interest went far beyond the children4 ,a gentleman1 not a member of the church1 who had never been interested in missionary work1 was stirred up by the solicitation of the children1 and gave both time and money to their effort4 ,he afterwards said to a good lady who inaugurated the movement1 ,i am glad ,i have given to this cause2 it makes me feel good1 and ,i want to keep right on giving4 ,that is the way it affects every one when the heart and pocket-book are open to these missionary objects4 ,it makes them feel good1 and stirs up a desire to continue the process4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,christian ,endeavor ,societies of ,new ,england are assisting nobly in the work of the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,one society pledges itself to support a missionary in our field for a year4 ,another makes one of its number a ,life ,member of our ,association1 contributing thirty dollars4 ,still another brings in a handsome collection recently taken1 and still another devotes the prayer meeting evening to thorough study upon the work that is being done through the ,a4,m4,a41 in the needy and destitute portions of our country4 ,one young man who spoke at the last meeting spent a portion of his vacation in studying up the work among the ,highlanders of the ,south1 and gave the results of his study at their meeting4 ,and why should not this active society of earnest young people be interested in the great work that is being accomplished among other young people1 painfully in want of the advantages which those here enjoy8 ,a prayer meeting pledge of the ,y4,p4,s4,c4,e41 printed in the ,sioux language by ,indian boys at a ,santee school1 is a most interesting evidence that this society is not confined in its usefulness to any locality or race4 ,a vigorous ,society is one of the elements of work in this ,indian school1 and a most useful element4 ,in a letter written by an ,indian boy is the following3 ,we have a ,christian ,endeavor ,society here4 ,i joined that society not very long ago1 and we have nice meetings on ,saturday night4 ,it does make me feel good in those meetings4 ,there are about thirty members now4 ,and so these ,societies of ,new ,england in their prayers for1 and contributions to1 the work of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 are clasping hands with the same societies among the ,negroes1 ,mountain people and ,indians4 ,the ,king's ,daughters are also a useful agency in the field work of our ,association4 ,a little ,indian girl writes interestingly of the ,king's whites1 and the new settlers from the ,north and from the old countries4 ,indirectly we are reaching many more4 ,the schools we plant often incite others to plant schools2 the houses of worship we aid in erecting cause others to be erected4 ,a single neat1 but inexpensive building for a country church of colored people has been known to occasion the building or repairing of at least nine church buildings of neighboring white people4 ,the incontestably good results of our work among the colored people are slowly but surely undermining race prejudice4 ,in spite of all the race trouble during the past year and the increasingly bitter utterances of some papers and some public speakers1 during no other year in the history of our country have so many manly words in favor of the ,negro been printed in ,southern papers1 and sounded from the pulpits and platforms of the ,south4 ,it was in a ,southern ,university and before a ,southern audience that a ,southern man1 a ,bishop of a ,southern church which took the name ,southern when it declared for slavery1 this year uttered these words3 ,it is a travesty on religion1 this disposition to canonize missionaries who go to the ,dark ,continent1 while we have nothing but social ostracism for the white teacher who is doing a work no less noble at home4 ,the solution to the race problem rests with the white people who live among the blacks1 and who are willing to become their teachers in a missionary spirit4 ,cruel and unreasoning is prejudice1 but when the public platforms1 and especially the pulpits1 begin to yield in their utterances to the sway of logic and humanity1 by and by public opinion will feel their force4 ,our institutions and our missionaries have compelled the respect of the ,southern people4 ,this year many expressions of it have been heard4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,educational ,,work4 ,,chartered ,,institutions4 ,during the past year we have directly sustained five chartered institutions in the ,south--,fisk ,university1 ,talladega ,college1 ,tougaloo ,university1 ,straight ,university and ,tillotson ,institute4 ,every year that passes emphasizes anew that these are most wisely located1 so that each is a center of far-reaching power1 and supplements the work of all the others4 ,fisk ,university at ,nashville1 ,tenn41 with its #ejc students1 has had a year of great prosperity1 and solid1 telling work4 ,its buildings have been full1 the quality of the work done has been excellent4 ,a graduate of ,fisk recently took his diploma from an ,eastern school of medicine1 with a rank two per cent4 higher than any other man in his class4 ,another graduate of ,fisk is a missionary in ,africa under the ,american ,board1 and is not only declared by the ,secretaries to be one of its best missionaries1 but has shown such business capacity that he has been chosen treasurer of his mission4 ,his wife1 a worthy helpmeet1 is also a graduate of this institution4 ,fisk has high ideals--few institutions in the ,south have higher ones1 or come nearer reaching them4 ,talladega ,college1 in ,talladega1 ,ala41 has had #dbg students in all departments4 ,its year's work has shown most satisfactory results4 ,talladega is closely connected with the church work of the ,state4 ,all the pastors in the ,congregational ,state ,association but four are from its theological department and several other ,states have found pastors there4 ,the last ,state ,association1 with its fine body of young men1 educated1 dignified and earnest1 was a most emphatic demonstration of the good work done in this institution4 ,the students of ,talladega have carried forward during the past year1 under direction of a member of the ,faculty1 a systematic mission work in the surrounding neighborhoods1 which has yielded large results1 both in the good done in the neighborhoods and in the training received by the workers for future usefulness4 ,tougaloo ,university has been filled to overflowing with #cdc students1 and after the last inch of room had been filled1 scores had to be turned away4 ,this school is situated almost in the center of the ,state1 and reaches a far larger region not limited by ,state lines4 ,it is near the border of the ,yazoo country1 which has begun to be so wondrously developed1 and is so rapidly filling with colored people4 ,the evangelization and enlightenment of this new ,africa must largely come through ,tougaloo4 ,here must be trained preachers1 teachers and other leaders of character for this new region1 as well as for the older portions of the ,state4 ,good1 solid work has been done here all through the year1 and preparation has been made for even better results in the future4 ,straight ,university1 in ,new ,orleans1 ,la41 is peculiarly situated for an important and far-reaching work4 ,it draws its students not only from the ,states1 but also from ,mexico and the ,west ,indies--#dhd last year4 ,with the enlarged accommodations for the primary and intermediate work which have been planned1 this institution will be better prepared to meet the demands of higher education4 ,tillotson ,institute1 at ,austin1 ,texas1 the youngest of our chartered institutions1 has had a prosperous year with #bcj students1 in the ,primary1 ,intermediate1 ,grammar1 ,normal1 ,college ,preparatory and ,college departments4 ,situated at the capital of the great empire of ,texas1 it is destined to be an educational1 religious and evangelistic centre1 a power for the building up of the kingdom of ,christ4 ,it greatly needs enlarged accommodations4 ,where is the ,lord's steward who is ready to give it at once the imperatively needed ,girls' ,hall8 ,,normal ,,and ,,graded ,,schools4 ,next to our chartered institutions come our normal schools4 ,these have the same course of study up to the college department as the chartered institutions have4 ,these normal schools are eighteen in number1 and are situated at ,lexington and ,williamsburg1 ,ky42 ,memphis1 ,jonesboro1 ,grand ,view and ,pleasant ,hill1 ,tenn42 ,wilmington and ,beaufort1 ,n4,c42 ,charleston and ,greenwood1 ,s4,c42 ,atlanta1 ,macon1 ,savannah1 ,thomasville and ,mc,intosh1 ,ga42 ,athens1 ,mobile and ,marion1 ,ala4 ,adding to these the normal departments of our five chartered institutions1 gives us twenty-three normal schools in the ,south4 ,besides these1 we have in the ,south thirty-seven which we class as common schools4 ,eight of these are graded1 with two or three teachers each4 ,nearly all are parochial schools4 ,the teachers are in both the day schools and the ,sunday-schools1 and are not only school teachers1 but church missionaries4 ,they train the young of our congregations for greater usefulness1 encourage many of the most promising to go to higher institutions1 teach the parents better ideas of home life1 and lead all ages to a more intelligent and spiritual worship4 ,,industrial ,,work4 ,nearly all our schools--chartered1 normal and even common--give some industrial training4 ,at ,fisk1 the young men are taught wood-working and printing2 the young women1 nursing1 cooking1 dress-making and house-keeping4 ,at ,talladega1 the young men learn farming1 carpentry1 painting1 glazing1 tinning1 blacksmithing and printing2 the young women1 cooking1 house-keeping1 plain sewing and other needle-work4 ,at ,tougaloo1 the young men learn farming1 carpentry1 blacksmithing1 wheelwrighting1 painting1 turning and tinning2 the young women1 sewing1 dressmaking1 cooking and housekeeping4 ,at ,straight1 the young men receive instruction in printing1 carpentry1 and floriculture2 the young women1 needlework1 cooking and housekeeping4 ,at ,tillotson1 carpentry is taught the young men2 needlework1 cooking and housekeeping1 the young women4 ,our normal schools at ,memphis1 ,tenn41 ,macon1 ,ga41 and ,williamsburg1 ,ky41 have carpentry1 printing1 and other industrial training for the young men1 and training in the various arts of home life for the young women4 ,at ,wilmington1 ,charleston1 ,savannah1 ,macon1 ,thomasville1 ,athens1 ,ala41 ,marion1 ,mobile1 ,pleasant ,hill1 ,sherwood1 and other normal1 graded and common schools1 the young women are trained in the things which they will most need in making comfortable and pleasant homes4 ,indeed1 we make it our special care that the girls shall everywhere in our work be taught these things1 so essential to the uplifting of a people4 ,in many places where we have no schools1 the pastor's wife1 or our special lady missionary1 is doing this same kind of work4 ,,theological ,,schools4 ,at ,fisk1 ,talladega1 ,tougaloo and ,straight1 there have been during the year theological classes4 ,the ,theological ,department of ,howard ,university1 at ,washington1 has been supported by this ,association4 ,even in some of our normal schools ,biblical instruction has been given to some who are now preachers and some who intend to preach4 ,but the number trained has not been sufficient to supply our pastorless churches4 ,the need of a general theological seminary for our churches in the ,south is becoming imperative4 ,the extensive enlargement of our church work1 which ought to begin at once1 can scarcely be made successful without this4 ,who is the one to seize this opportunity to establish an institution of untold possibilities in advancing the ,kingdom of ,christ on earth--a place where ministers shall be prepared for the work in the ,south and for foreign missions in ,africa8 ,,statistics ,,of ,,educational ,,work ,,in ,,the ,,south4 ,total number of ,schools #fj ,total should mean new ideas and intelligent worship4 ,we have knowingly lent our aid to nothing else4 ,these churches are gathered into ,associations1 and the fine bodies of pastors and delegates which come together in these1 present a most emphatic testimony to the value of the work done in the past1 and are an earnest of what the future will show4 ,revivals--some of them of great power--have been reported to us from the ,plymouth ,church1 ,washington1 ,d4,c41 ,fisk ,university1 ,memphis1 ,jonesboro1 ,sherwood1 ,glen ,mary1 ,oakdale1 ,athens and ,pine ,mountain1 ,tenn42 ,montgomery and ,florence1 ,ala42 ,tougaloo and ,jackson1 ,miss42 ,straight ,university1 ,new ,orleans1 and ,corpus ,christi1 ,texas4 ,many others of our churches have had a quiet work of grace1 by which additions have been made to them4 ,we report new churches at ,glen ,mary and ,athens1 ,tenn42 ,roseland1 ,la2 ,fort ,payne and ,alco1 ,ala4 ,this makes the whole number of our churches in the ,south #acf4 ,besides these churches1 there are our churches among the ,indians and the work of gathering the ,chinese into churches in ,california4 ,we are praying and laboring for the eternal salvation of millions1 the establishment through the grace of ,god1 the atoning blood of ,christ1 and the work of the ,holy ,spirit1 of character which shall meet the tests of the ,judgment ,day and the needs of eternal association with purity4 ,in aiming at this ultimate result1 our missionaries are doing a work of inestimable importance for the nation and the world4 ,they are successfully working upon some of the great problems of this country1 which armies and millions of money have failed1 and of necessity must fail1 to solve4 ,nothing but the glorious gospel of the blessed ,god1 taught from the pulpit and the teacher's desk1 and illustrated in the eloquent lives of consecrated missionaries1 can change the idol worshiper from heathen ,china1 the wild-man of the ,west1 the half-heathen ,negro so recently in the cruel degradation of slavery1 those of our own race in the bonds of ignorance and immorality--so that they shall have and manifest an intelligent and worthy manhood and womanhood4 ,nothing else can meet cruel prejudice1 which would forever deny full manhood or womanhood to those called to it by ,god himself1 and pour oil upon its angry waves until they shall be still4 ,our plan of work in the ,south is often misunderstood and often misrepresented4 ,it is not our plan to force the races together4 ,it is not our plan to agitate questions which arouse the prejudices of the ,southern people4 ,we do not agitate4 ,quietly1 steadily1 patiently1 lovingly1 our missionaries seek to lift up the degraded1 enlighten the ignorant1 and bring them all to ,christ1 well knowing that bitter prejudice cannot forever stand opposed to an enlightened1 cultivated1 ,christian people1 whatever may be their color or their past condition4 ,we have nothing to do with the question of social equality in the ,south any more than we have in the ,north4 ,we are not even trying to force the races together in the churches4 ,we have no principles which would prevent our aiding two churches in the same town--one with a membership of white1 the other of colored people4 ,we have done it4 ,in our church work1 we simply maintain that a ,christian church should stand ready to fellowship any one whom ,christ fellowships1 that it should turn no one away because of his color1 or because he1 his father or his mother was a slave4 ,we maintain that there is no ,christian reason why there should be either ,state or local organizations of churches which will not fellowship churches whose memberships differ in race4 ,we seek to establish churches and other institutions which dare interpret ,christianity as ,christ taught it1 and which will not yield a ,christian principle for enlarged statistics4 ,there are caste churches enough in the ,south4 ,no more are needed4 ,if ,congregationalism can go there true to its history1 true to its real convictions1 true to that gospel which successfully faced the bitter prejudices of ,jew and ,gentile with the broad invitation1 ,whosoever will1 may come1 then it goes to become a mighty power and to win both a place for itself and other churches1 in time1 to accept the same broad interpretation of ,christianity4 ,this ,association has faith in the power of the gospel1 and1 under the reign of ,god1 of the final triumph of the right4 ,it is willing to enter the doors now so wide open for missionary work1 and to wait1 if need be1 for that glory of the denomination1 which is better than long tables of statistics1 the glory of adhering to the right4 ,the time has now come when our church work can be greatly enlarged4 ,our schools have been doing their work1 and scattering all through the ,south those who have learned what pure religion and spiritual worship mean1 and they are ready and longing for something better than they find within their reach4 ,we can now push our work as fast as the churches of the ,north will furnish the money4 ,we most earnestly appeal for the means to enable us to greatly develop1 during the coming year1 this department of the work4 ,,church ,,work ,,among ,,new ,,settlers ,,in ,,the ,,south4 ,wonderful and more wonderful tales are now reaching the world of the unlimited resources of the ,south4 ,they are a new discovery even to the ,south itself4 ,these stories of lumber and mineral wealth are turning the tide thitherward4 ,towns and cities are beginning to spring up as they have in the ,west1 and both great need and rich opportunity call for immediate missionary work4 ,this new population is mostly1 as yet1 from the ,north1 though many from ,wales1 especially miners1 and from other countries of the old world are beginning to come in4 ,in the new towns they find no churches1 in the old towns few whose ideas and customs can satisfy their minds and hearts4 ,here is a great opportunity4 ,we can aid these people to establish churches which will emphasize that interpretation of the ,gospel which we believe to be ,christian4 ,in ,florida1 ,louisiana1 ,alabama and ,tennessee we have already aided in establishing such churches which have connected themselves--and gladly so--with the regular ,state organizations of ,congregational churches4 ,no direful results have followed4 ,no fanaticism is in it4 ,it is simply doing the thing that is right and ,christian4 ,may such churches continue to multiply in the ,new ,south and help to make it new indeed4 ,,statistics ,,of ,,church ,,work ,,in ,,the ,,south4 ,number of ,churches #acf ,number of ,missionaries #aac ,number of ,church ,members #h1dch ,added during the year #ihi ,added by profession of faith #gcd ,scholars in ,sunday-school #ad1gce ,,the ,,mountain ,,work4 ,notwithstanding all the interest that has been manifested in our mountain work1 we feel sure that the churches do not realize the magnitude of this field1 the pressing needs of this people in the heart of our country1 the wonderful opportunities before us1 and the heart-stirring results already secured4 ,large portions of seven ,states--three or four hundred counties--with a population of between two and three millions1 claim our attention and call for our work4 ,here is a country of untold natural resources4 ,here is a people of good blood4 ,men of power have come from among them1 and shown of what they are capable4 ,side by side with the ,northern soldiers these mountaineers fought for the ,union1 or suffered in prisons rather than fight against it4 ,where our schools and churches have been established1 men and women of worth and ability have stepped out and become strong helpers in building up new institutions4 ,but away from these institutions and out of touch with the life of the towns1 we find a class of people whose condition in itself is a ,macedonian cry4 ,their windowless1 stoveless1 comfortless log cabins2 their so-called schools1 in which on the roughest benches conceivable1 and without a desk1 a slate1 or a blackboard1 with a teacher with unkempt hair1 ragged and dirty clothes1 possibly bare feet1 who perhaps can scarcely read1 the children study at the top of their voices--blab schools they call them--have for their course of study the spelling book alone1 and are taught that a word is correctly spelled when all the letters are named1 no matter in what order2 their so-called churches1 with perhaps a monthly meeting during the summer months1 without ,sunday-school1 prayer meeting1 or any form of church work1 without morality as a requisite of church membership1 with an illiterate ministry--a large number of the ministers cannot read even1 and what is worse in many cases are drunken1 impure1 and in every way immoral2 their children so easily gathered into day-schools and ,sunday-schools1 and so responsive to the work done for them--all these things appeal to us with pathetic power4 ,perhaps no missionary work ever showed greater results in so short a time than those obtained in these mountains4 ,we have here in two ,states eleven schools and twenty-two churches4 ,earnest calls have come to us to begin work in ,north ,carolina and ,alabama4 ,we feel sure that if the churches could hear these appeals they would bid us respond4 ,we have promised to begin work the coming year in these ,states1 and we must look to the churches to furnish us the means4 ,new lumbering and mining towns are springing up in this mountain country1 and immediate missionary work is their only hope4 ,a single one of these new towns1 scarcely half-a-dozen years old1 has had already more than a hundred men shot in it1 and this awful work still goes on4 ,this marvelously rich mineral region is sure to be filled in the near future with these mining towns1 and unless the ,christian work keeps pace with this kind of growth1 this large territory will become notorious for bloody scenes as no portion of our land has ever been4 ,now is the time to preempt the country for ,christ1 by planting at strategic points the church and the ,christian school1 and through them to send forth to every part the pure1 restraining and elevating influences of the gospel4 ,god's call to us to do this work is loud and clear4 ,can we be faithful to ,him and refuse to obey8 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,indians4 ,there are #bfj1jjj ,indians in this country4 ,compared with our great fields in the ,south1 this is small4 ,but there is an emphasis on this work which is not made by figures4 ,those who were native to this land have been made foreigners4 ,those who were the first to receive missionary work here1 and who responded as readily as any heathen people ever did1 are still largely pagans4 ,while one ,christian has been telling the ,indians the story of the gospel1 another calling himself a ,christian has been shooting them4 ,they have not yet had a full chance to learn what ,christianity is4 ,from place to place they have been pushed so that they have not had time to build their altars to the true ,god4 ,we have wronged them and we owe them more than we shall pay4 ,we shall meet our obligations but in part1 when we do all we can to save them4 ,we have in bur ,indian work eighteen schools and six churches1 one new church having been added this year4 ,in these1 #fh missionaries have been doing noble service for the ,indian and for the country4 ,shall the ,indian problem forever perplex and shame both the country and the ,church8 ,will not the churches enable us to send all the workers and do all the work needed to be done1 and thus hasten the day when it can be joyfully proclaimed that the ,indians are evangelized--no longer pagans and support their hopeful and fruitful mission with all possible sympathy and aid4 ,again1 in #ahhh1 the need of immediate and great re-enforcement and enlargement was urged upon us4 ,sixteen missions have been in operation during the year1 and in them thirty-five workers1 ten of them ,chinese1 have been employed4 #a1chj have been enrolled as pupils in our schools--#bdi more than last year4 #dj have this year come out of heathenism into ,christianity1 and the whole number who have confessed ,christ in these missions and have been received as true converts is above #gej4 ,this means much for the ,chinese in this country1 and it means missionaries for ,china as well4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,enlargements ,,and ,,improvements4 ,extensive building and improvements have been called for this year4 ,at ,lexington1 ,ky41 the ,chandler ,normal ,school building is nearly completed at a cost of #ae1jjj--the gift of ,mrs4 ,chandler4 ,at ,williamsburg1 ,ky41 thirteen acres of land have been secured for the enlargement of our very successful school there and the large industrial building moved upon it4 #b1cjj of the expense for this was paid by our generous friend1 ,mr4 ,stephen ,ballard1 of ,brooklyn1 ,n4,y4 ,the increasing number of boarders at this institution has made necessary a new and larger dining room and kitchen1 which have been built4 ,at ,nashville1 ,tenn41 a commodious two-story building of modern architecture1 with rooms for physical culture and industrial training1 has been erected4 ,at ,memphis1 ,tenn41 the ,le ,moyne school building1 which in the winter was partially destroyed by fire1 has been restored by the insurance4 ,at ,knoxville1 ,tenn41 the old church building1 which was unfit for use1 has been built over and a parsonage added1 making a neat and convenient place of worship1 and a home for the minister4 ,at ,jellico1 ,tenn41 the building used for church and school purposes has been considerably enlarged to meet the wants of a large ,sunday-school and congregation4 ,at ,grand ,view1 ,tenn41 a new building has been put up for school and dormitory purposes4 ,at ,pleasant ,hill1 ,tenn41 a large three-story ,girls' ,hall is in process of construction to enable the mountain girls to take advantage of this successful normal school4 ,at ,pine ,mountain1 ,tenn41 the church building has been completed and furnished for school as well as church purposes and a teachers' home has been built4 ,at ,beaufort1 ,n4,c41 the large old school building known as ,washburn ,seminary1 has been placed in the hands of the ,association and refitted and a new normal school started in it4 ,the church building1 also1 has received many greatly needed repairs4 ,at ,chapel ,hill1 ,n4,c41 a brick church building1 formerly belonging to the ,southern ,methodists1 has been purchased for a school1 and will be used also for church services4 ,at ,macon1 ,ga41 the ,ballard ,school building has been completed and furnished at a cost of #ad1jjj1 and a ,girls' ,hall erected at a cost of #g1ejj--two more generous gifts of ,mr4 ,stephen ,ballard1 of ,brooklyn4 ,at ,savannah1 ,ga41 extensive repairs have been made on the ,beach ,institute building4 ,at ,thomasville1 ,ga41 the school facilities have been increased by moving a school building in the town1 to the ,connecticut ,industrial ,school4 ,at ,mc,intosh1 ,ga41 land and buildings have been bought for the enlargement of this historic1 successful and intensely interesting school4 ,at ,woodville1 ,ga41 the church and school building which had been nearly wrecked1 first by the ,charleston earthquake and then by a cyclone1 has been made solid and comfortable4 ,at ,byron1 ,ga41 land has been bought and preparations have been made for a church building4 ,at ,fairbanks1 ,fla41 a school building and lot worth #b1ejj have been given to us by ,mrs4 ,merrill1 of ,bangor1 ,me41 on condition that we maintain a school there4 ,at ,marion1 ,ala41 we have refitted a large dwelling for a greatly needed school building4 ,at ,new ,decatur1 ,ala41 a new church building is about completed4 ,at ,tougaloo1 ,miss41 the large ,girls' ,hall1 owing to the peculiarities of the soil--alluvium1 #cjj feet deep--unknown when it was built1 had been crushing its foundations into the ground until it was on the point of falling4 ,our own missionary and student force lifted it up1 put under it new foundations and repaired it in every part4 ,at a cost of between #d1jjj and #e1jjj1 they saved a #ae1jjj building which engineers and contractors pronounced a hopeless wreck4 ,at ,jackson1 ,miss41 our church has been nicely seated with new pews4 ,at ,hammond1 ,la41 a new church building has been erected4 ,at ,straight ,university1 a new industrial building has been put up with student labor1 and a small greenhouse has been built4 ,for a long time the need of enlargement there has been felt1 and a lot near the present buildings has been bought1 on which is to be a school house for the primary and intermediate grades4 ,at the ,fort ,berthold ,mission1 ,north ,dakota1 a new church1 school and mission home building has been built and named the ,moody ,station1 after the giver of the money which built it2 also a small church building at ,moody ,station ,no4 #b4 ,at ,standing ,rock a new school1 church and mission building--called after the donor1 the ,sankey ,station--has been erected4 ,at ,fort ,yates1 we report a new church building--the ,darling ,memorial4 ,these are the most important enlargements and improvements4 ,of course1 there are many other smaller ones throughout our large field4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,woman',s ,,work4 ,twenty-six ,woman's ,state ,organizations now co-operate with us in our missionary work4 ,each year shows the increasing importance and helpfulness of the ,woman's ,bureau4 ,from it go counsel1 help and inspiration to the lady teachers in the field1 and missionary news and helpful suggestions to the ladies of the ,state ,associations4 ,through it pass the sympathy and the help of the earnest workers in the older churches to the earnest workers in our mission churches and schools4 ,the people for whom we labor cannot be saved either for this world or the next1 unless the women who make the homes are lifted out of coarseness and vice1 and taught true womanhood and womanly duties and arts4 ,the ,woman's ,bureau is a most potent factor in the work of bringing the ,gospel to the rescue of womanhood in our mission fields4 ,,finances4 ,the current receipts have been #cgf1baf4hh4 ,the expenditures1 including the payment of the debt of last year of #e1fda4ba1 have been #cga1gde4ba4 ------------- ,leaving a balance in hand ,september #cj1 #ahhi #d1dga4fg4 ,it is with devout gratitude to ,god that we present these figures1 showing that we have been enabled during the past year to meet all current expenditures1 to liquidate the indebtedness of last year and to show a balance of over four thousand dollars now in the treasury4 ,this result is not only gratifying in respect to the past1 but it is hopeful in respect to the future4 ,we trust the constituents of the ,association1 who are so deeply three hundred students who otherwise would not have had the privilege of attending any school1 but have also greatly enlarged our school accommodations at ,chapel ,hill and ,beaufort1 ,n4,c41 ,phoenix1 ,s4,c41 ,thomasville and ,mc,intosh1 ,ga41 ,selma1 ,ala41 and ,new ,orleans1 ,la4 ,another year will afford opportunities to a much greater number of pupils1 and will still further enlarge our school facilities in the special lines of work contemplated by this gift4 ,it was a noble gift from a noble man and it will do a noble work4 ,the overwhelming majority of the ,southern ,negroes are still found in the rural districts1 where schools are few and far apart4 ,it is expected that the gift of ,daniel ,hand will take educational privileges to thousands of these in the country and on the plantations1 who but for this must have lived as in the blackness of night4 99 99 99 99 99 ,it has been found that with the ,west ever growing1 and ,congregational churches multiplying1 the field of our ,western ,district ,secretary was too large for him possibly to cover it all4 ,hence this immense district has been divided1 and another has been established with its centre at ,cleveland1 ,ohio4 ,rev4 ,c4,w4 ,hiatt1 a graduate of ,wheaton ,college and ,oberlin ,seminary1 has been placed in charge of this district1 and has already entered upon the work4 ,we bespeak for him a hearty welcome from the churches4 ,prof4 ,edward ,s4 ,hall1 a graduate of ,amherst ,college and a teacher of long and successful experience1 has been chosen a ,field ,superintendent for the ,southern work1 and entered upon his duties at the beginning of our year4 ,we again make grateful acknowledgment of our indebtedness to the ,american ,bible ,society for its grants of ,bibles1 and to the ,congregational ,sunday-school and ,publishing ,society for its grants of books and lesson helps1 to our poorer churches and ,sunday-schools4 99 99 99 99 99 ,this much we report4 ,but how little can figures and words present the needs of these great fields4 ,how little idea can they convey of the extent of the work done by our earnest1 self-sacrificing1 faithful and able missionaries4 ,we turn from the past to the future4 ,the work attempted and done is great1 the work unattempted and not done is far greater4 ,should every church and individual in the land double last year's contribution this year1 we would be compelled still to leave greatly needed work undone4 ,in view of boundless opportunities1 we can ask no less of the churches than that which the recent ,national ,council at ,worcester recommended--five hundred thousand dollars 7#ejj1jjj7 for the work of the coming year4 ,brethren1 with more prayer1 more consecration and more self-denial let us take up together this vast shall ,i render unto the ,lord for all his benefits1 he would realise that there was something in those figures not so very dry4 ,all bills paid1 and even a balance much larger than usual left to help out the too scant resources of the new year6 ,i find myself saying again and again3 ,how can this be8 ,it looked so dark four months ago2 it looks so bright to-day4 ,god has answered prayer1 has been true to his promise1 has changed to blessing the stress that we were under by placing thus upon our work the seal of his own and his people's approbation4 ,sixteen missions have been in operation during the year1 all but three of them for the entire twelve months4 ,thirty-five workers have been employed1 ten of whom have been ,chinese brethren4 ,the months of labor aggregate #ced4 ,the total number who have been enrolled as pupils in our schools is #a1chj4 ,this is larger by #bdi than the enrollment of the previous year1 and by #ccf than that of the year before4 ,the average membership month by month was in the aggregate1 #ebc2 the average attendance1 #cai4 ,these numbers are also in excess of the corresponding ones in several previous years4 ,among these members of our schools there are #baa that profess to have ceased from idolatry1 and #aej who are believed to be true disciples of ,christ4 ,i cannot now state the exact number who have professed conversion during the year1 but ,i believe it to be about forty4 ,if so1 the total number who have declared themselves to be ,christians and have been accepted as such by our brethren1 is more than #gej4 ,the expenditures have been #aa1jai1 of which more than #a1fjj came from the ,chinese themselves1 while their offerings for mission work in ,china and expenses met in connection with ,christian work in ,california would show a giving on their part of at least #b1ejj during the year4 ,,some ,,other ,,tokens ,,of ,,good4--,our helper1 ,loo ,quong1 writes as follows from ,los ,angeles under date of ,sept4 #bjth3 ,now ,i have some good news to tell you this time4 ,the first one is this1 that five of our brethren will receive their baptism on ,sunday in the ,first ,congregational ,church4 ,i brought them all down to the church to be proved by the pastor and the deacons1 and they all gave their good testimonies to the satisfaction of all4 ,dr4 ,hutchins ,rev4 ,r4,g4 ,hutchins1 ,d4,d41 pastor was so glad on hearing this good news again4 ,there will now be eleven ,chinese members among his white flock4 ,he spoke very kind towards the ,chinese and our school in their prayer-meeting1 as he always did so in his preaching4 ,another item of good news is1 that by an arrangement among the ladies of this church1 a reduction in the teaching force which ,i have been compelled to make is to be made good by volunteer service1 each lady giving one evening in each week4 ,i earnestly hope that this good example may be followed in others of our churches4 ,at ,san ,buenaventura the new mission house1 finished several months ago1 gives great satisfaction4 ,it is not the property of the ,mission1 but has been built for it and is rented to us at cost4 ,we can rely upon the use of it as long as the work continues in that place1--that is1 if the building lasts so long4 ,we were paying #ab4jj per month for a low1 ill-located and ill-built1 untidy shanty1 yet the best place that could be had4 ,we now pay #h4jj per month for a neat1 commodious building which furnishes not only an attractive school-room1 but living rooms also1 for which our brethren pay a small rent1 and thus make for themselves something very like a ,christian home4 ,four of these brethren were recently baptised and received to the ,congregational ,church4 ,no mention has yet been made in these columns of the new mission house in ,oakland which we hold by the same tenure as that at ,san ,buenaventura4 ,it could not be better located1 is a very neat structure1 substantial also1 and planned expressly for our work4 ,it1 too1 is rented to us at cost4 ,a hint of what goes on there1 and of what goes out from there1 aside from the labors of the school1 may be found in these few sentences from a letter of ,yong ,jin3 ,one scholar promised to be ,christian was two weeks 7i4e4 two weeks ago71 and he will join our ,association to-night4 ,i hope his soul will be saved4 ,i had preaching on the street last ,sunday and before last ,sunday4 ,i
