year went down in a bright sky4 ,revivals of religion and an increased membership was the joyful record of our churches2 by the generous aid of the ,daniel ,hand ,fund1 our schools showed a greatly enlarged attendance1 and the faithful work of the teachers brought forth most satisfactory results2 the threatened debt that darkened several months of the year was happily averted by good showing on the right side of the ledger4 ,it is from this bright setting sun of the last year that we turn with faith and hope to the opening of the new year4 ,we believe1 the work is the ,lord's and that he will provide4 ,but our faith alone will not save us4 ,it is our duty to inform and arouse our constituents as to the needs and urgency of our work4 ,we will specify in a few particulars3 #a4 ,as to funds4 ,our last year's favorable showing was due in large part to legacies4 ,these are variable1 and we must rely on the gifts of living donors4 ,unless1 therefore1 the churches and individuals make larger contributions than last year1 we have no assurance of an escape from debt1 even if the work be maintained merely as at present4 ,we wish most earnestly to press this fact upon the friends of the ,association4 #b4 ,but this is not all4 ,growth is imperative4 ,the people at the ,north are alarmed by the disturbed condition of the ,south1 and are awakening afresh1 as they were at the close of the war1 to a sense of responsibility to the colored people4 ,the aroused feeling at that time took a practical turn1 and money1 men and women were sent without stint to enlighten and elevate4 ,shall it be so now1 or will mere sympathy or useless regret suffice8 ,no6 ,something1 the right thing1 can be done4 ,fair-minded men1 both ,north and ,south1 realize that all schemes involving fraud1 violence1 disfranchisement or deportation1 are impracticable1 but all are agreed as to the value of ,christian enlightenment1 enabling the ,negro to earn property and to become an intelligent and virtuous citizen4 ,this is the line on which the ,association has perseveringly toiled since it opened its first school at ,fortress ,monroe in #ahfa1 and it is not too much to say that nothing more effective has been done in all these years4 ,can anything of a better sort be done in the future8 ,amid all the jarring discords at the ,south1 the people there1 both white and black1 welcome the efforts of the ,association4 ,they feel that we are not disturbers1 that we have a single honest aim1 and are working at the only true solution of the great problem4 ,we ask the people of the ,north1 therefore1 to come to the rescue once more by practical1 self-denying liberality4 #c4 ,but this is not all4 ,a work so vital to the interests of the nation and of the cause of ,christ needs to be uplifted by the prayers of ,god's people4 ,deliverance cannot come from political parties1 governmental authority or theories of industrial reform4 ,the power of ,god must be in it4 ,we therefore respectfully but earnestly ask our brethren in the ministry to remember this work in their prayers in the great congregation1 and we ask our fellow ,christians to remember it in the prayer-meeting1 at the family altar and in the closet4 99 99 99 99 99 ,now1 concerning the collection4 ,these are not the words of a begging agent1 but of ,paul the ,apostle1 and they come from his pen just after he had closed that wonderful fifteenth chapter of ,first ,corinthians on the glorious resurrection and the victory over death and the grave4 ,these words are fit1 therefore1 in any assembly and at the close of any discourse however exalted4 ,brethren remember the collection4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,corinthian church seems1 like some churches in recent times1 to have been remiss in sending on the collections1 and hence we find ,paul1 a year later1 to be ,after ,money ,again4 ,he writes so nobly1 so kindly1 that we are tempted to quote a few sentences3 ,for ye know the grace of our ,lord ,jesus ,christ that though he was rich1 yet for your sakes he became poor1 that ye through his poverty might be rich4 ,and herein ,i give my advice3 for this is expedient for you who have begun before not only to do but also to be forward a year ago4 ,now therefore perform the doing of it4 ,as it is written1 ,he that had gathered much had nothing over2 and he that gathered little had no lack4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,national ,council has appointed ,committees to take into consideration the consolidation of the missionary magazines and the re-adjustment of the work of the several ,congregational cheerfully acquiesce in what shall be found to be the deliberate and ultimate decision of the churches4 ,in the meantime1 it may not be out of place for us to say that missionary periodicals and missionary societies are growths and not manufactured articles1 and that plans for modification should be very carefully considered4 ,we venture1 therefore1 to suggest that counsel be taken of the ,town ,clerk of ,ephesus1 to do nothing rashly4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,africa4--,,its ,,shadow ,,and ,,sunshine4 ,the shadow is still broad and dense1 well nigh covering the continent4 ,the heroic ,stanley has found that shadow as dark as when he first traveled beneath it4 ,the malarial climate and the bitter hostility of the natives are there yet4 ,the accursed slave trade is as extensive as ever1 embittering the lives of its victims1 instigating wars among the tribes and obstructing agriculture1 commerce and civilization4 ,the failures to suppress it are discouraging4 ,sir ,samuel ,baker's well-equipped military force1 ,col4 ,gordon's intrepid courage1 and ,emin ,pacha's brave endurance have all succumbed before it4 ,its flow1 pushed back for a time1 now returns with its old-time flood4 ,then1 too1 the ,mahdi uprising1 seemingly suppressed1 still lives and is likely to hold the ,soudan if not to harass ,egypt4 ,when ,emin ,pacha1 under the protection of the heroic ,stanley1 abandoned his little sovereignty1 it was a farewell1 humanly speaking1 to a speedy establishment of missions in that territory4 ,but there is a bright lining around all this darkness4 ,for one thing the eyes of the civilized world are turned toward ,africa with increasing intensity4 ,the rainbow fringe of missions around the coasts is still sustained by the gifts and prayers of ,christians1 and by the blessing of ,god4 ,the multiplied efforts of the ,european ,states to colonize the dark continent are facts full of encouragement4 ,the motive may be selfish2 the method sometimes unwise and cruel1 and the conflict of contending interests may be hindrances1 but the results will be good4 ,all these movements aim at commerce1 and commerce can only flourish on the ruins of the slave-trade1 and among peaceful tribes with growing industries1 intelligence and civilization4 ,the ,congo ,free ,state1 with its railroad in construction1 its steamboats on the rivers and its civilized settlements1 is a bright omen of the future4 ,surely ,god's people should pray for ,africa1 moved by pity and by hope4 ,christians in ,america can do more than pray--they can help to answer their own prayers4 ,they can raise up the sons and daughters of ,africa1 trained in our schools1 to go forth as missionaries and colonists to the land of their fathers4 ,the experiment has been tried with success4 ,missionaries of ,african descent can endure the climate better1 and can more readily reach the people than those of the white race4 ,there is a call in these facts for the means to give special instruction in ,biblical truth to those who can thus be prepared for this great mission work4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,conventions ,,of ,,colored ,,people4 ,the proposed ,national ,conventions of colored people to be held in ,chicago and ,washington are significant facts4 ,they indicate that the colored people are suffering wrongs1 and that they feel a call to seek redress4 ,their right to hold such conventions is unquestioned2 the wisdom of holding them will be vindicated1 we hope1 by their just and reasonable utterances and plans4 ,intemperate language and rash and impracticable measures will not help1 and we have so much confidence in the discretion of our colored friends that we believe none such will be said or proposed4 ,our colored brethren must not forget that much is being done for them and that they are doing much for themselves4 ,it would be unwise to overlook this in any attempt to reach something less tangible4 ,their appeal to the justice of the ,nation1 to the ,constitution and the laws can be made invincible1 but it will be well to keep in touch with the sympathy of the ,north and with the conscience of the ,south1 for in spite of all the wrongs inflicted on the colored people in the ,south1 we believe there is a large and growing number of ,southern people who look upon this whole question conscientiously1 and although perplexed desire that the right shall be done4 ,for the colored people themselves1 while conventions are good1 yet the accumulation of property1 growth in intelligence1 and character are better4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,school ,,echoes4 ,a boy in one of the arithmetic classes was given an example which began with the statement1 that a man deposited a certain sum of money in a bank4 ,he was asked if he knew what a bank was4 ,he replied2 ,yes1 it is a place where you dig coal4 ,what is the shape of the earth8 ,the earth is square4 ,pap says so1 and he says the ,book says so too4 ,he says if there warn't four corners1 how could the four angels stand on 'em4 ,i hear you'uns have taken your children out of school4 ,what did you do that for8 ,i'll tell ye4 ,i yaint goin' to send my child to any such fool-teacher as that ar4 ,why1 he tole 'em that the world was roun'1 an' any fool knows better4 ,a ,methodist minister in ,north ,carolina1 preaching from the passage about standing at the corners of the streets to pray1 told his people that if they wanted to see a first class hypocrite1 see anybody who would stand up to pray4 ,the standing up was what he thought ,jesus reproved4 ,a man in the ,south writes to us as follows1 making an unusual inquiry3 ,i write you this to ask you do you take married ladies in your school1 and if so ,i want to send my wife at once4 ,please send me the terms of the school and what she will ,,meeting ,,in ,,chicago4 ,god1 who writes his thoughts in the development of a nation1 not less than in the grouping of constellations or in the drama of the physical world1 has spoken in the birth and history of our land with startling distinctness4 ,in every people we may see an ideal of ,god embodied1 however imperfectly realized by human achievement4 ,happy is that people who can see ,god's ideal for them1 and those statesmen who have it in their hearts to lead the people along the line of ,god's thought4 ,to get at something of ,god's thought for us1 we must go back even into those dark ,teutonic forests into which the ,roman world peered with so much fear and awe1 and out of which came those freemen who knew how to leap upon that ,roman world in its pride and its weakness and re-assert human liberty4 ,those old ancestors of ours knew what freedom was2 but as they came against that ,roman world1 they themselves were in part conquered by it1 and they lost something of that freedom4 ,but ,god set apart one corner of the ,european world for them1 and called over the ,english ,channel in the fifth century those forefathers of ours1 there to watch for a century and a half that tremendous conflict in which the very plow-share of the ,teutons went through the roots of the ,roman life in ,britain and left nothing but ,teutonic fields remaining4 ,and then ,god brought into this ,britain1 thus set apart1 the gospel of ,christ1 and our forefathers became ,christians--not ,christians such as there were in other parts of ,europe1 but having that free and independent ,christian life that shone forth in men like ,wyckliffe1 denying the power of the keys to ,rome except where ,rome spoke with ,christ's voice1 and in men like ,latimer1 before whom the proud ,henry trembled4 ,all over ,england were sown these seeds of a free ,christian faith2 so that when ,luther came1 it was in ,england as in our country when the forest fires have ceased1 and suddenly there spring up from the sod a new forest because the seeds lie in the prairie from age to age4 ,so in our ,english soil there were those seeds of ,christian freedom that sprung forth and gave us a free and ,protestant ,england4 ,and then1 in the reaction1 when ,mary was on the throne1 and the fire at ,smithfield was kindled1 the ,christian men of ,england went to ,geneva and there met ,john ,calvin1 whose system of ,christian thought set the soul of man forth1 in his awful agony of sin1 and in ,god's redemption for him--set him forth independent of kings and rulers1 and in whose sight a king was but ,god's vassal4 ,when ,englishmen had to come in contact with ,john ,calvin1 the iron of his free spirit became steel1 and then ,puritanism was born1 and at that time ,god raised the curtain that hung over a whole hemisphere1 and gave that hemisphere to these free ,teutonic ,english people4 ,we know how they conquered the country for this free spirit1 and how the ,revolutionary ,war came on1 and ,samuel ,adams1 awakening to the sound of those cannon at ,concord on that spring morning1 said1 in spite of all the forebodings of a long and deadly struggle1 ,how glorious is this morning1 because he foresaw what ,god could work here in a free ,christian land4 ,and so on that following ,fourth of ,july those men assembled in ,philadelphia and put forth the ,declaration of ,independence4 ,there is no better commentary on it than ,lincoln's words when he said1 in those dark days just before the war3 ,in their enlightened view nothing stamped with the divine image and likeness was sent into the world to be trodden on or degraded or imbruted by its fellows4 ,they set up a beacon for their children and their children's children4 ,wise statesmen as they were1 they knew the tendency of prosperity to breed tyrants1 and so they established these great self-evident truths1 that when at some remote time some man1 or faction1 or interest should arise1 and say that none but rich men1 or none but white men1 or none but ,anglo-,saxon white men were entitled to life1 liberty1 and the pursuit of happiness1 their children's children should look back to the ,declaration of ,independence1 and should take heart to begin again the battles their forefathers fought1 that thus truth and liberty and righteousness and justice and all the ,christian virtues might not be lost in the land2 and none might dare limit and circumscribe the principles on which the temple of liberty was being built4 ,thus1 by these centuries of growth and life ,god said to our people1 ,i have given you this key to your history1 the union of liberty and an enlightened faith--faith and freedom4 ,be true to these4 ,this do and thou shalt live4 ,it seems plain enough4 ,and yet1 in this garden of liberty there were sown tares4 ,in the bosom of this free land the deadly foe of freedom1 slavery1 was here4 ,in slavery was the evident and necessary foe of all that ,god had foreplanned for our ,nation1 because slavery denies the rights of men4 ,men tried to deal with this problem2 they tried to circumscribe it2 they said it was a local question1 and ,webster stood in the ,senate and boasted that he had never spoken of slavery on that floor4 ,how the way of liberty was choked1 how the tree of liberty withered6 ,and then ,god spoke in the earthquake1 and the fire1 the war came on1 and the slave was set free2 and it seemed as if again we had come into sight of ,god's plan for the race1 that liberty and ,christian faith should be the watchword of our national life4 ,now again1 at last1 it seems as if that which we are accomplishing and that which ,god has spoken in all these ages is again jeopardized1 and as if this human right shall be denied in the ,south4 ,men doubt whether there is in the ,negro more than the capacity of a subordinate race1 and say that to educate him is to lift him out of his sphere4 ,brethren and friends1 there is manhood in the ,negro race4 ,there was humanity in those slaves who toiled their way over mountains and through swamps before the war1 with their eyes focussed upon the ,north star of freedom4 ,and there was humanity in those mothers who clasped their babes to their breast and fled before the bloodhounds that they might escape the enslavers of men4 ,there was manhood in those one hundred and seventy-eight thousand ,negro soldiers who seized their muskets and went to the front and fought for us1 and with us1 in those dark days of #ahfd1 when the draft was failing and when volunteering had failed1 that there might be soldiers to stand in the front and to dig in the trenches1 and of whom eighty thousand gave their lives for us4 ,there was manhood in those cabins in which all over the ,south1 our fleeing soldiers1 escaping from prison1 never failed to find support1 help1 and guidance4 ,oh6 how disastrous a business it is that that manhood1 which all those years of slavery could not extinguish1 should now be extinguished by the priests of a proud1 arrogant1 and selfish aristocracy4 ,but1 my friends1 as we felt in those days1 and feel to-night1 there is still no help for us but in the ,christian solution of this problem and in the ,christian destiny ,god has given to us4 ,liberty and faith1 the two elements1 must be conjoined4 ,for us to deny the rights of the ,negro now is to say that ,god did not make man in his image4 ,it is to say that liberty is not a sacred right1 but a selfish acquisition2 that government does not exist to establish rights1 but to protect privileges1 and that mankind are not brothers1 but foes4 ,it is to turn the shadow upon the dial of human progress backward toward the ages of oppression and chaos4 ,and just there is the problem that confronts us1 ,south and ,north together4 ,what shall be done in this dire extremity8 ,i remember years ago hearing of a fire in ,charleston in which that beautiful spire of ,st4 ,michael's took fire and some one had to be found to go up beyond the reach of the hose to put out the flame kindling and flickering there4 ,no one was found until a ,negro stepped forth and climbed that tower1 taking his life in his hands1 and put out that flame4 ,and when he came down again1 one man said1 ,name your reward1 and he replied1 ,let me but be counted a man4 ,and that we have got to do1 or ,god will shake down our civilization and our ,nation as he shook down that spire of ,st4 ,michael's in the earthquake three years ago4 ,it is certain to come unless we follow the line of ,god's appointing that this must be a free ,nation1 absolutely free1 free everywhere4 ,as yet1 emancipation is but an outward and formal thing4 ,what we wait for now1 is the emancipation of a true and an elevated will in the ,south1 and ,christian citizenship4 ,into that1 this ,association pours its strength1 its money1 and its life4 ,it took half a million lives to emancipate the slaves outwardly1 and it may yet take hundreds and thousands of lives--our lives--our children's lives--poured in upon this problem1 that so we may lift the ,negro to that point where he feels himself1 and where we feel him to be1 a man--taught to labor1 protected in the enjoyment of the fruits of his labor1 without which the strongest arm grows palsied1 trained in a strong1 self-reliant ,christian manhood1 holding the reins firmly on the neck of all passion--a man4 ,and that we will do2 and the very greatness of the problem1 ,i believe1 is our redemption4 ,it was the greatness of the crisis that thrilled the ,nation's heart when the war burst upon us4 ,it is the very greatness of our present problem that calls in trumpet tones to men and women and children all over the land2 ,come and help solve this problem for ,christ4 ,a few weeks ago1 in one of the beautiful towns of ,northern ,illinois1 a young man1 the only son of his father and mother1 hearing at ,sabbath evening the alarm of fire1 sprung forth and took his place upon the burning building and there did the work of a fireman4 ,in the attempt to put out the fire he was hurled headlong and in one moment his life had gone hence4 ,a few weeks afterward1 as a friend was talking with his mother about it1 she said1 ,our son was always so swift to heed any call of need or duty1 it seems to me as if he heard suddenly some call from ,god from some farther clime and sprung forth and was gone from our sight4 ,blessed1 heroic faith6 ,but1 brethren and friends1 fathers and mothers1 we need that same faith for our living sons and living daughters1 to send them forth into this work of ,god4 ,when the ,christ child was on the back of the giant ,christophorus crossing the stream1 how heavy he grew as the giant plunged his way through the waters4 ,god weighs heavily upon this ,nation this greatest of all national problems1 what to do with these despised ones4 ,but bear the burden we must1 and bear it through we must to the farther shore of a ,christian solution1 or we and it will go down the flood black and the white shall dwell together in a mutual helpfulness1 with a more complete national feeling1 a deeper dependence upon him from whom alone comes strength1 less display of material resources1 but more faith in ,god4 ,that time must come4 ,and then ,i see the army enlisting for the conquest of that dark continent of ,africa1 shrouded in gloom1 so long robbed of her children1 but now at last finding that1 like ,joseph1 they were taken from her that they might come back to save life4 ,so our ,nation shall be not a mirage awakening the hopes and aspirations of mankind but to audience and as quiet and orderly as any ,new ,england congregation4 ,the service was well arranged and conducted in a very happy manner4 ,the sermon was thoughtful1 earnest and inspiring4 ,the pastor1 ,rev4 ,yancy ,b4 ,sims1 is a graduate of ,talladega ,college and an honor to his ,alma ,mater4 ,on ,monday ,i visited1 with the pastor1 several of the homes of the people4 ,what a contrast between these refined homes and the hut of the slave quarters of twenty-five years ago6 ,the ladies of this church had just finished a silk block for a quilt which a home mission church in ,washington ,territory is making from blocks made in each ,state in the ,union1 with the hope of selling it to increase its fund for building a house of worship4 ,it was a beautiful block of rich material and the most delicate workmanship4 ,the faces of these ladies showed great delight in the thought that they were helping others who needed help4 ,do the colored people vote here without opposition8 ,i asked of an intelligent colored man4 ,oh1 yes6 he replied4 ,and are the votes always counted8 ,yes1 except in a pinch6 was the answer4 ,this is much better than in most places which ,i am called upon to visit4 ,from ,little ,rock ,i went to ,paris1 ,texas4 ,this growing city has a population of about twelve thousand1 five thousand of whom are colored4 ,our pastor here is a graduate of ,fisk ,university1 as also is his wife4 ,the need of our church work in this city and in the ,state is two-fold1 direct and indirect4 ,our ,congregational churches are quite as useful for toning up other churches and their ministry as in the direct work done by them4 ,dodds1 ,roxton and ,dallas in ,northern ,texas were next visited1 and in each a small church is established and doing a good work4 ,at ,austin1 ,i found our ,tillotson ,institute rapidly filling with students--bright and earnest4 ,a girls' hall is greatly needed here at once4 ,this institution with its unlimited opportunities in the great ,state of ,texas ought not to be cramped in any way1 but to be given every facility4 ,who will give it at once what it so urgently needs8 ,i found several intelligent people here greatly desiring a ,congregational church in the city--the school-church being too far away to reach the mass of the people4 ,said an educated colored man to me3 ,our most intelligent people cannot endure the ignorant worship of these old churches much longer4 ,we want ,congregationalism1 but if we can't have that1 we must look elsewhere4 ,we must have something to hold our educated young people from falling into infidelity4 ,and so they must1 for that is a coming danger4 ,at ,helena1 ,i found a most interesting state of things4 ,our church is in a country place called ,the ,colony4 ,the church and the colony began their existence together1 and a more prosperous community of colored people it would be hard to find4 ,they own several thousand acres of land1 and are in every way ahead of their white neighbors4 ,the school house of the latter was a poor tumble-down affair and the children were untidy1 while the school house of the former was a neat1 painted and well-kept building1 crowded in school hours with bright1 enthusiastic children--clean and polite4 ,the teacher was from ,talladega ,college and has taught here for five years4 ,his school is pronounced the best in the region for white or colored4 ,the pastor of this church has charge also of the ,congregational ,church at ,goliad4 ,corpus ,christi is a curious town on the ,gulf of ,mexico4 ,it has about #f1jjj people--,americans1 ,mexicans1 ,negroes1 ,italians1 ,greeks and ,chinese4 ,the ,negroes here hold an unusual position1 being regarded as in every way superior to the ,mexicans and ,italians4 ,our pastor here is popular with all classes and has been chosen an alderman of the city1 and is treated with as much consideration as any other of the ,city ,council4 ,our church is one of the oldest ,congregational churches in the ,south1 and has had a very interesting history4 ,with the exception of the ,roman ,catholic church it has the best house of worship in the city4 ,on ,sunday afternoon1 ,rev4 ,mr4 ,strong1 the ,congregational pastor1 and myself attended service at the ,roman ,catholic church4 ,we went into the body of the church and took a first class seat1 and the fact that one was colored did not even draw attention to us4 ,it was taken as a matter of course4 ,the colored people of ,texas are taxed for #bj1jjj1jjj of property4 ,in the cities they make up about one-third of the population4 ,an enlargement of our church work in this ,state is greatly needed4 ,straight ,university in ,new ,orleans1 ,la41 is an inspiring place4 ,i found the buildings packed full--seats full1 chairs in the aisles1 in the corners and on the teachers' platforms--all full4 ,about one hundred and fifty applicants had already been sent away for want of room1 and they were still coming1 as many as ten often being refused in a single day4 ,they were here not only from the ,states1 but also from ,mexico1 the ,west ,indies and ,central ,america4 ,i saw here some remarkable work in moulding done by a student in the fifth grade1 who had never been trained1 but who seems to be impelled by real genius4 ,straight ,university has a unique position and opportunity4 ,its influence is now great2 it is destined to be boundless4 ,from the ,chicago meeting ,i made this trip4 ,the meeting was inspiring1 but what ,i saw in the field1 of character-building and the uplifting and refining of a race1 was of our meetings4 ,several of the young people of our church1 including some of the converts1 were instrumental in leading a number to the ,saviour4 ,i am planning to assist them in dealing with inquirers there1 to-night4 ,there have been revival services in three other churches4 ,the meetings held in our place were indeed a season of refreshing from the presence of the ,lord4 ,our chapel was crowded on ,thanksgiving morning2 the sermon was preached by ,rev4 ,dr4 ,grimke1 pastor of the ,fifteenth ,street ,presbyterian ,church1 followed by an address by myself4 ,the pastors of the ,berean ,baptist ,church1 ,methodist ,church and the ,lutheran ,mission were on the platform1 the ,plymouth ,church holding a service of their own4 ,in the evening we held a ,thanksgiving praise service1 in which about one hundred persons1 including thirty-five of the converts1 gave short thanksgiving testimonies4 ,last ,sabbath ,i baptized fourteen by immersion and received twenty-seven into the church on profession of faith1 and three since1 making a total of thirty4 ,rev4 ,eugene ,may of ,osage1 ,iowa1 one of the delegates ,i met at the ,world's ,sunday-school ,convention this summer in ,london1 gave us a powerful sermon on the characters of ,dives and ,lazarus ,contrasted4 ,in the evening ,i preached a sermon to the church on ,the ,christian ,armor and we had the ,lord's ,supper4 ,last night1 after addressing the young ,christians on ,the ,way to ,god1 as illustrated by the worthies of ,hebrews eleventh1 we had them testify on how they came to ,christ1 the one thing they did and what they got4 ,the answers were all intelligent and to the point4 ,decision was what they did1 and ,christ was what they got1 were the answers put in various forms4 ,at the close of the meeting ,i asked a gentleman1 a member of another church1 the ,berean ,baptist1 who always attends our special services1 to say a few words4 ,he testified to the help and inspiration he had received from the meetings2 that he had never listened to clearer testimonies of conversion than those given by the converts1 and that they were doubly blessed in having our pastor1 yes1 he said1 ,i will say our pastor1 for he is pastor to this whole community and city1 lead you to ,christ1 and train you for service4 ,his remarks were warm and sympathetic1 but too personal for me to report more than the above1 which is but the key-note of the kindly feeling that many of the best ,christian people of other churches have toward us1 as they have seen our little church come up from almost nothing to its present position of service in this community4 ,it has been the ,lord's doings and it is wondrous in our eyes4 ,we have already begun the work of training these young disciples for service1 while we have our nets still spread to catch sinners for ,christ4 ,our motto for the year is3 ,to win souls for ,christ and to train them for ,his service4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,glad ,,thanksgiving4 ,,by ,,miss ,,mary ,a4 ,,bye1 ,,williamsburg1 ,,ky4 ,if any one had been the least bit homesick or unhappy from any cause on ,thanksgiving day1 it would have done him good to spend the day at ,williamsburg ,academy4 ,our boys and girls were so happy all the day that no one could feel tired or sad4 ,after breakfast the boys thought it hardly fair for them to have all the holiday while the girls had to work1 so they borrowed aprons and helped the girls4 ,dishwashing1 sweeping and all the various branches of housework were done in a very short time1 and everybody was as merry as could be4 ,the boys declared that they were glad to have learned something which they did not know before1 about the work the girls had to do4 ,our very tallest boy1 over six feet in height1 was instructed in the mysteries of scouring knives4 ,he said he had no idea how knives were cleaned1 and thought his ,thanksgiving lesson worth learning4 ,after the housework was done the boys gathered a great quantity of holly1 and our pretty new dining-room was profusely decorated4 ,all the family then attended the ,thanksgiving services in the ,christian ,church2 that is all except the ,mother1 who must needs watch the dinner in process of preparation4 ,we had a real ,thanksgiving feast1 in all except that our turkey was fried chicken4 ,mr4 ,tupper contributed oranges1 which were quite a treat4 ,one of the girls came to mother very much excited1 eyes wide open and hands up1 exclaiming ,o1 ,mrs4 ,bye1 what are them big yeller things in the dining room8 ,when told that they were oranges1 she said1 ,law6 ,i never seed none before4 ,there were others who had never tasted them1 and they watched closely to see how the teachers managed them1 before they ventured to eat theirs4 ,two of the teachers had written ,thanksgiving verses on cards tied with ribbon1 and placed at each plate4 ,after dinner we moved our chairs back and read our verses1 after which we sang ,praise ,god from whom all blessings flow1 and ,i think it is rarely sung more heartily4 ,then again the boys donned the aprons and cleared the tables and washed the dishes1 while the teachers watched the fun and laughed until we were tired4 ,while the molasses was boiling1 the scholars played games in the sitting-rooms4 ,then came the candy-pull1 and very sweetly closed the day's festivities4 ,i am sure we went to prayer meeting in the evening with very thankful hearts4 ,some of the scholars said it was the happiest day they had ever known4 ,it is a constant wonder to me to see the improvement in our girls1 and their interest in their work4 ,they are so eager to learn to do things well that ,i cannot think of my work as one of sacrifice1 as some work may be1 for the joy of it overcomes all such thought4 99 99 99 99 99 ,christian4 ,after instructing him and showing him the promises1 there still seemed to be something in the way4 ,questioning him1 ,i found that he was expecting some wonderful experience4 ,he had specially in mind the remarkable conversion of a certain young man of his acquaintance4 ,he was hoping for the same4 ,i said to him1 ,now you want to know that you are a ,christian4 ,which would you rather have for evidence1 an experience such as that young man had1 or ,god's word for it8 ,after waiting a moment to take in my meaning he replied1 ,god's word4 ,do you believe on ,jesus ,christ8 ,yes4 ,well1 here you have ,god's word1 ,john1 #c3cf1 ',he that believeth on the ,son hath eternal life4' ,will you take ,god's word8 ,after a moment's deliberation came the answer1 ,yes1 ,i will4 ,then we knelt down and prayed4 ,this1 ,i trust1 was a soul born into the kingdom4 ,one of our theological students reports the following admonition from an ignorant preacher much older than himself3 ,you go to school and get education4 ,in five or ten years the people will not listen to such preachers as ,i am4 ,,tillotson ,,institute1 ,,austin1 ,,texas4 ,our school is opening very auspiciously4 ,never before have so large a number been here at the beginning of the term4 ,and the requests for the privilege of coming are numerous1 so that if all come who are asking to do so1 we shall be over-full4 ,we are greatly pleased with the spirit with which the new year's work is taken up4 ,there are more each year who come prepared to enter the higher grades1 which shows that the common schools of ,texas are improving4 ,the ,christian ,endeavor ,societies1 of both the young men and the young women1 have elected their officers and are ready to begin work again1 and the ,temperance ,society will do the same1 this week4 ,one of the students who has been with us from the beginning of our school1 has left us this year and gone to ,oberlin1 where he has entered the ,sophomore class4 and so are often unmentioned4 ,but here is a description of life and travel among the ,indians1 by the wife of a missionary just going to the ,dakotas3 ,the land of the ,dakotas--what a distance6 ,how long the miles seemed from my home6 ,how frightful the land seemed to me1 from the tales of blizzards and cyclones6 ,how strange to go to live among the ,sioux ,indians1 known to me principally for the ,minnesota1 ,fort ,fetterman and ,custer massacres2 to be a friend to ,sitting ,bull1 ,brave ,bull1 ,gall1 ,grass1 ,swift ,bear1 ,red ,cloud and many others with names no less picturesque6 ,with such impressions ,i left my home to accompany my husband to his home and work at ,rosebud ,agency1 ,south ,dakota4 ,i was soon relieved of the idea of the distance1 for only a few hours took us across ,ohio1 ,indiana1 ,illinois1 ,wisconsin and ,minnesota to the border of ,dakota4 ,here we left the railroad to attend the general conference of the ,dakota ,mission at ,flandreau4 ,how quickly all the impressions of years can be changed1 when the impressions are wrong and we see the true state of affairs4 ,in this case1 seeing hundreds of bronzed faces1 lighted up with joy1 as they sung ,i hear ,thy welcome voice in their own tongue1 there was enough to change all my former opinions of ,indians in general and of the ,dakota ,indians in particular4 ,it was like coming into a new world4 ,that is1 it was finding those whom ,i thought belonged to another1 lower1 baser life1 living the same life with myself2 rejoicing in that which is my greatest joy--childhood with ,god the ,father4 ,and after meeting ,ehnamani1 ,grey ,cloud1 ,john ,wakeman1 ,spotted ,bear1 and many others2 after hearing them discuss living topics--living topics to them because they belong to the change from heathen to ,christian life2 after hearing them pray--though ,i could not understand a word1 yet from their earnestness ,i could understand the spirit of their prayer2 after all this1 ,i could scarcely believe that these men had ever been ,indians in paint1 feathers1 dances and on the war path4 ,thus ,i spent my first four days among ,indians4 ,and even if preaching1 prayers1 discussions were in an unknown tongue1 ,i perhaps1 understood as much as ,i would at many a ,presbytery or ,conference meeting4 ,and ,i got as much good from the ,dakota sermon as ,i have from many an ,english sermon4 ,not the least pleasing of my new impressions were those made by the missionaries present4 ,rev4 ,john ,p4 ,williamson1 of ,yankton ,agency2 ,rev4 ,a4,l4 ,riggs1 ,d4,d41 of ,santee ,mission and ,normal ,school2 ,rev4 ,t4,l4 ,riggs of ,oahe1 or rather the apostle to the ,tetons1 were the life of the meetings whether in ,english or ,dakota4 ,they came from and returned to the work to which their lives are given4 ,i did not meet these men with the greetings of a certain minister there1 who asked1 ,how many years have you been in the ,indian work4 ,about twenty1 was the reply4 ,then the minister said3 ,well1 you have been in the work so long that you would not be much good anywhere else4 ,my impression was that such men would be now1 as they always have been1 successful in any field of labor4 ,but ,i must leave ,flandreau with its citizen ,indians1 ready to vote for prohibition in the ,constitution of ,south ,dakota1 for this is not our field of labor4 ,the next scene is one which ,i shall long remember--our reception at a mission home4 ,other homes may be happy and other people may welcome me to their homes2 but few--none that ,i have met--can welcome one so cordially as ,mrs4 ,riggs welcomed us to her home at ,oahe4 ,this is a long-to-be-remembered experience4 ,and after spending a week at ,oahe1 meeting the teachers and pupils of the school1 and the citizen ,indians there we started for our own home and work1 ,park ,street ,church ,station4 ,this place has been the home of my husband for a year4 ,crossing the ,missouri is one of the first of our experiences4 ,the team and wagon are loaded on the boat1 the men row a few rods1 then the boat stops4 ,bar1 remarks ,mr4 ,cross1 got to tow2 when1 horrors6 ,is this a missionary ,i see8 ,mr4 ,cross is in the water1 sometimes to his knees1 sometimes to his waist4 ,thus they tow the boat a half mile4 ,from the way they hold their breath the water must be cold4 ,well1 it is ,october #aj1 in blizzard-swept ,dakota4 ,but after two hours of work we are safely landed on the west side of the river and soon we are toiling slowly out of the breaks of the river4 ,after a ride of a few hours we come to a creek with no water but plenty of wood4 ,here dinner is announced4 ,this is camping in earnest4 ,this is not play4 ,camping in the ,east is generally within sound of the cackle of the hen and the low of the cow4 ,but here you must live off of the land or out of your mess-chest4 ,we combine the two4 ,many hotels and families could learn a good lesson from an experienced traveler and camper4 ,in less than thirty minutes from the time we stop1 horses are unharnessed1 fire built1 prairie chicken dressed and cooked1 coffee made1 table spread1 blessing asked and we busy with the tender and juicy chicken4 ,this is the same order at each meal4 ,at night we sleep on the earth and under the sky1 with but little between us and either sky or earth4 ,this is a new and somewhat larger bedroom than ,i have been used to4 ,but with no house within twenty miles we are unmolested4 ,what a place6 ,i listen4 ,all the air a solemn stillness holds4 ,i look4 ,so lonesome it is that ,god himself scarce seems to be there4 ,but the clear air and quiet night soon lull me into unbroken slumber4 ,thus we travel until we reach ,park ,st4 ,church ,station1 where we find our comfortable log house of one room ready to receive us4 ,cross as he tells them of the wise men who came to seek ,jesus4 ,some of the faces are dirty1 and so is much of the clothing4 ,but all listen as if they perhaps might see this same ,jesus4 ,this is new church4 ,by invitation1 two of our ,oahe ,church1 ,solomon ,bear ,ear and ,david ,lee1 were present from the ,cheyenne ,river ,agency1 and it was judged wise to organize4 ,the ,apostles' ,creed and a short ,covenant were offered as ,articles of ,faith and the pledge4 ,the nine members of our ,oahe church whose homes are at ,grand ,river and ,fort ,yates will become members here on dismission at ,oahe1 and the native workers and other missionaries will also transfer their connection1 so that if all do so1 the new church will have a membership of eighteen or twenty4 ,in connection with these services the new chapel was dedicated to the ,master's service by public expression2 it has already been so consecrated4 ,i doubt not1 in the heart of the giver of the funds1 as well as by the prayers of all who have been interested in it4 ,is is a bright1 pleasant room within1 and has a snug appearance from without4 ,i think ,mr4 ,reed has made a very creditable success in this his first
