,highlanders we have received the following3 ,i have held meetings a couple of weeks1 first at the church1 and then at the academy4 ,a large number have been reached4 ,the open meetings disclosed the new life to all4 ,we held daily meetings of prayer in the evening1 and a large percentage of the students attended4 ,all took part4 ,the ,y4,p4,s4,c4,e4 has increased fourfold1 and all the time is occupied in their meetings1 and often two or three arise to speak at once4 ,six names were presented for active membership1 and two for associate4 ,the work is not confined to this single church and helping themselves in church and school work4 ,it is very important that we should have some expression on their part in regard to this4 ,there are many incidents in which grateful acknowledgment is made4 ,a few incidents will best answer the above question4 ,a little more than a mile from here there lives in an almost uninhabitable cabin an old lady who is called ,aunt ,eliza4 ,i saw her first one cold day last winter1 when ,i called and found her in bed sick with pneumonia4 ,we ministered unto her as we best could1 providing medicine1 food and clothing4 ,from a missionary barrel garments were obtained which helped to make her body comfortable4 ,she depended on the kindness of a neighbor to gather sticks for her and draw water4 ,at times there was only enough fire in the fire-place to give a faint glimmer1 not enough to make the room cheerful4 ,aunt ,eliza is old and crippled1 and it was only with much care and patient waiting that in the goodness of ,god she was restored to health4 ,some time passed after her recovery before ,i saw her4 ,she came to our house on a hot summer day to bring an offering of gratitude for ,god's mercy in giving her back health and strength4 ,she brought to us in a corner of her handkerchief fifty-five cents which she had saved from little gifts from children and grandchildren nearly as poor as herself4 ,she had at this time only meal enough in her house to make one pone of bread4 ,gratefully she urged upon us her self-denying gift of thanksgiving4 ,of course we accepted it1 only to return it to her in the name of the ,master1 who is the ,great ,gift ,giver4 ,later in the season our sister remembered us again4 ,she had saved for us two chickens1 but a conjuror came along and said he would tell her fortune for them4 ,he succeeded in beating her out of her offering for the ,lord1 and in return she received nothing4 ,she came and told us all about it4 ,this good woman did not rest until she brought us one at a time the chickens that she had promised4 ,when the ,association met with us a few days ago she brought1 as her part to help1 a few eggs4 ,there are other incidents in her life which are interesting1 but we cannot tell them all now4 ,she certainly is grateful and gives the widow's mite in giving all that she has4 ,she has been to our church and been blessed in meeting ,god in the sanctuary4 ,the first ,sunday that she came she bowed and courtesied to the people as she came in1 much to their amusement4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,pioneer ,,missionary ,,in ,,africa4 ,illustration3 ,,rev4 ,,george ,,thompson4 ,rev4 ,george ,thompson was early enlisted as a missionary in the ,mendi ,mission on the west coast of ,africa4 ,he had been a most ardent friend of the slave1 active in aiding their escape from the house of bondage1 and as a consequence had spent five years in the ,missouri ,state ,prison4 ,he went to ,africa in #ahdh under the commission of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 and proved himself to be remarkably useful4 ,one of his most far-reaching efforts was in the work as a peacemaker4 ,a fierce and unrelenting war had been raging among the tribes around the mission1 and this was brought to a close through the wise and persistent efforts of ,mr4 ,thompson4 ,he was chosen umpire for the contending chiefs1 and after repeated and wearying excursions1 and ten interviews or councils with both parties1 he at length succeeded4 ,then came the joy which peace brings4 ,warriors met and fell on each other's necks2 chiefs1 who were for years enemies1 now shook hands and embraced each other with the affection of long-separated friends2 sisters1 wives and daughters1 long captives1 fell into each other's arms1 weeping for joy4 ,a chief's daughter was seen running to embrace her father's feet1 a wife hastened to welcome her husband and children1 and entire towns were filled with cries of gladness4 ,the beatitude1 ,blessed are the peacemakers1 belongs to ,mr4 entitled1 ,palm ,land1 and in educating two boys whom he brought with him from ,africa4 ,in #ahfa he removed with his family to northwestern ,michigan1 where he labored as a home missionary for eighteen years1 being the pastor for fifteen years of a church which he established4 ,he then returned to ,oberlin1 where he remained until his death in #ahic4 ,in all these years ,mr4 ,thompson was a laborious and useful man1 actively engaged in awakening the churches to an interest in ,africa1 in writing his books and educating his children4 ,in his later years1 while living in ,oberlin1 he was abundant in labors in connection with ,sunday-schools and feeble churches in ,ohio and other ,states4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,pioneer ,,missionary ,,among ,,the ,,indians4 ,in #ahdc a number of young men from ,oberlin entered upon a mission among the ,ojibway ,indians in the northern part of what is now ,minnesota1 under the auspices of the ,western ,evangelical ,missionary ,society1 which was soon afterward transferred to the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,of the inaccessibility of this field1 a competent authority has said3 ,there is probably no missionary field to-day on the face of the that after a short visit at home1 ,mr4 ,wright returned to the mission taking his young wife with him--their wedding tour4 ,it was a journey of over a month made in a canoe4 ,they were both compelled to walk at intervals twenty-two miles in the swamps along the side of the stream until they reached ,mr4 ,barnard's station4 ,these walks were varied by sickness2 ,mr4 ,wright sometimes had chills every day1 but at ,mr4 ,barnard's station he recovered4 ,there remained yet twenty miles of their journey1 and this was undertaken on foot1 but soon a storm brought five inches of snow4 ,mr4 ,wright says3 ,my wife was very lame1 and what woman would not be after walking twenty long miles through mire and water1 over high hills and through gullies1 in snow from four to five inches deep8 ,the change wrought by these missionaries can be indicated in a sentence3 ,when they went there the ,indians cultivated almost no land and their only domestic animals were dogs4 ,they maintained a precarious existence by hunting and fishing1 and the gathering of wild rice1 with starvation as no uncommon experience4 ,in a few years these ,indians raised their own supplies of corn and potatoes1 with some to sell to procure other necessaries2 they began to build houses for themselves2 had the benefit of a saw mill and a grist mill1 with the blessings of a church and boarding school4 ,the ,association withdrew from the mission in #ahei1 but ,mr4 ,wright returned under other auspices1 and spent several years in effective and useful work4 ,he still lives and is active in ,christian labors as a member of the church in ,oberlin4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,southern ,,journey4 ,,by ,,secretary ,a4,f4 ,,beard4 ,it included every ,southern ,state in extent from ,virginia to ,texas1 and from ,texas to ,florida4 ,it was a study of schools1 their methods and attainments2 it was the acquaintance of new teachers and their work1 the greeting of those who have become old friends1 the look into the eyes of more colored youth in schools than usually falls to one person4 ,it was a comparative study of classes of all grades in schools of the same grade1 and of schools in different ,states and environments4 ,it was an examination of industries in agriculture1 industries in mechanics1 of schools1 normal and collegiate4 ,it was an inspection of properties2 an inquiry as to the prices of paints and brick and lime and wall papers4 ,it was a visit to churches1 a handshake with pastors and deacons1 a gathering of congregations to make their wants and wishes known to the ,association4 ,one soon learns that the correct use of the definite article to designate the ,a4,m4,a4 is not confined to those who have studied grammar4 ,there is only one ,association for these people4 ,they never call it ,american nor even ,missionary4 ,the is all sufficient1 and it does one good to hear his society thus alphabetically abbreviated1 as it does to meet these warm-hearted brethren of the colored churches which have been nourished with life by ,the ,association4 ,if anyone is suffering from iciness in the cardiac region1 there is no better place for him to get the cockles of his heart well warmed up than in some of the colored congregations' churches which ,i visited4 ,i said some4 ,alas6 there is a difference in churches--in the ,south4 ,i find the schools full of interest1 and that in the higher institutions the girls and young women are side by side in nearly equal numbers with lads and young men in climbing up the steep hills of education4 ,it is1 indeed1 climbing4 ,it takes more time1 more patience and more resolution than most white students with happier conditions can realize4 ,the characteristics of the student are changing somewhat from the former days4 ,pupils are pushing into the more advanced grades earlier in years4 ,they have not the memories of slavery as had the generations before them--only the traditions of it1 and certain of its influences--for influences do not die when institutions pass away4 ,there is not1 for example1 much old-fashioned ,puritanism stalking about in ,new ,york in these days1 but considerable of ,puritan influence is alive and is just now contributing to the hopefulness of the times and the interests of municipal reform and even of the ,state government4 ,influences continue1 and it will take time for those of slavery or the effect on both races to pass away4 ,one may not particularize among so many schools and churches as were in the path of my visitation1 and one must generalize if he will keep within limits4 ,for ten years now it has been my privilege to study the ,south as a personal observer1 not only in schools and churches and not only on the regular routes of travel1 but in the bypaths of rural life and in talks with all classes and conditions of men of every shade of color4 ,i may1 therefore1 be permitted to generalize4 ,first1 it is often said that those who live among evils best understand them and know how to meet them4 ,this is a fallacy4 ,the missionaries in ,china knew better what was for the good of ,china than did the ,emperor himself4 ,there are people in the ,united ,states1 also1 who could give some good points to the new ,emperor of ,russia1 and if he would take them and use them it would be for the advantage of that country4 ,it is true that impressions are not facts1 and one cannot run over a fashionable route of travel holding converse with some hospitable ,southern host and return with much more than impressions4 ,such are likely to speak with more confidence than knowledge1 but1 on the other hand1 one who confines himself to a single locality in the ,south and to the local facts is more likely to have his views lean to inclination than to truth4 ,one's opinion ought to be estimated by his information4 ,i have known an otherwise intelligent citizen of ,new ,orleans to be ignorant of the existence of ,straight ,university with its #ejj students and its noble accomplishment4 ,a citizen of ,new ,york in this case could give the citizen of ,new ,orleans some information about the ,south4 ,secondly1 the negroes are gaining4 ,never were the schools better in their entire range in different ,states1 the studies more exacting1 the purpose on the part of students for mastery in their work more resolute4 ,never was there manifested a more self-reliant spirit4 ,the people are having a hard time just now2 many are poorer than ever before1 but the negroes are gaining1 inch by inch4 ,there are millions in schools and unreached millions yet who could not read a word in the ,new ,testament if they had one2 but the gain is seen in many ways2 in schools1 in churches1 in homes1 and in the improved quality and character of the newspapers edited by colored men1 as also in their increased numbers4 ,the schools under the direction and superintendence of colored teachers are gaining in standing and worthiness4 ,thirdly1 the white ,south is gaining4 ,not very rapidly1 but gaining4 ,the lawless part of the ,south--and there is a lawless part--is as lawless as ever4 ,the lower and more violent elements1 however1 are but a small part of the ,southern people4 ,still they know that the general public opinion is not positive enough to condemn them in any question between the negroes and the whites2 hence they are not afraid to do what they will with the negro4 ,the great body of the ,southern people are law-abiding1 with the single exception that they do not propose to respect the ,fifteenth ,amendment4 ,they are committed against this4 ,they deprecate lawlessness4 ,they are personally kind to the negroes4 ,they are busy in the ordinary duties of life1 but the lawless know that these good people will never disturb them in their injustices to the negro4 ,then1 there is a relatively small element of the people who are prophets of a better day4 ,they themselves often feel the slavery of a public opinion which puts odium upon them when they are too friendly in behalf of the oppressed colored man4 ,they cannot oppose many things which they feel to be wrong without losing their influence4 ,these seers of the future are in hearty sympathy with our work and give it such personal encouragement as they may under the tyrannical conditions of a public opinion not friendly to equal rights on the part of the negro4 ,there is a great gain1 also1 in ,southern public opinion as to the capacity of the colored man and his possible future4 ,this gain is seen in the better provisions for the colored public schools1 in towns and cities4 ,the schools of the ,a4,m4,a4 are both object lessons and incentives for the education of the white as well as the colored in the public schools4 ,the ,south is exceedingly sensitive as to the opinion of the ,north4 ,a trifle of published criticism1 for example1 goes through the ,southern papers with rebuttals enough to break down a national constitution4 ,an imperfect and incorrect report of an interview1 which lived just long enough to be printed1 has been lately passionately confuted in certain ,southern newspapers with a profusion of epithets which were out of all proportion to the harmless nonsense committed to the press by an untrained reporter--a new illustration of the extreme sensitiveness of the ,south to ,northern opinion4 ,northern sentiment is often ridiculed1 and frequently sends not a few ,southern newspapers into spasms1 but it is heeded4 ,let it be kindly and true1 and pressed fraternally and constantly ,in ,his ,name who was accompanied by a secretary of the ,association4 ,after a careful survey they selected ,austin1 ,texas1 as the most promising point4 ,about twenty-five acres of partially wooded land just beyond the eastern boundary of the city of ,austin were purchased for #e1jjj1 the gift of ,mr4 ,tillotson4 ,in the following year a charter was obtained and the work of raising money for the building was entered upon4 ,the funds were finally secured1 and in #ahgi the foundations were laid1 and the building1 #ajd feet in length and #db in depth1 constructed of white pressed brick with dress stone trimmings1 rose to its five stories in height4 ,on the #agth of ,january1 #ahha1 the school opened4 ,two of the five floors were then open spaces4 ,eleven pupils only were enrolled at the beginning1 but the term closed in ,june with #ajg4 ,during this year the building was completed and named ,allen ,hall1 in honor of one of the largest givers4 ,at the opening of the fall term the beginning of the next year1 the accommodations were taxed to the utmost4 ,in ,august1 #ahhb1 the report reads1 ,allen ,hall is full to repletion1 #ajj in the boarding department4 ,work cannot unfold for need of more room4 ,young men and young women in the same building make an urgent appeal for a new building4 ,at no time since the beginning of the second year have there been adequate accommodations for all desiring to attend4 ,for ten years the institution under the name of ,tillotson ,collegiate and ,normal ,institute has furnished to students from all parts of the great ,state of ,texas with its half million of colored people1 and from other ,states1 and from ,mexico1 not only an opportunity to acquire a thoroughly practical common-school education1 but also a more extended course to prepare students for entrance to the highest educational institutions in the land2 and a normal training course for teachers for all positions in the public schools4 ,within this period of time a church has been formed for the students of the institution and others1 which has been regularly ministered to by the president of the institution4 ,in the year #ahhh a building for carpentry and manual instruction was erected and a teacher was appointed for industrial training4 ,the picture following is that of ,allen ,hall as it looks down upon the valley of the river ,colorado4 ,in every direction the views are of great extent1 and include many picturesque scenes4 ,the ,state capitol--a mile distant--and the various public buildings of ,austin1 are before the eye4 ,since electricity has been introduced1 ,austin by night presents a brilliant outlook from the grounds of the institution1 but the light which shines from these buildings on the hill sends its beams farther than those of the electric plant1 and pierces a denser darkness than that of night4 ,illustration3 ,,allen ,,hall4 ,the industrial buildings--viz41 the shop for carpentry1 another for blacksmithing1 for repairing of vehicles1 and for painting--are at a suitable distance in the rear on the boys' side of the grounds4 ,below them are located the barn1 wagon house1 hennery1 etc4 ,on the crest of a second eminence1 several hundred feet from ,allen ,hall1 is the attractive new building 7see picture1 page #ajj7 used as a dormitory for teachers and young women pupils4 ,in this building are the culinary department also1 and the dining room for each hall4 ,there are forty dormitory rooms in this hall which will accommodate sixty pupils and their teachers4 ,in addition to its dining-hall for all the pupils within the institution there are reading and sewing rooms1 etc41 which add to its completeness4 ,there are not many school buildings anywhere with more diversified landscape and beautiful natural surroundings than those of ,tillotson4 ,encompassed by oak trees large enough for shade and shelter1 but not over-towering the prospect1 free from the distracting noises and dust of the streets1 and yet possessing all the advantages of a thrifty and beautiful city1 the student at ,tillotson will have at least one period in life that may not be commiserated4 ,this new building has not yet been duly named1 and if anyone of those who may read this sketch will give #a1jjj to be used as an endowment fund1 the interest to be applied year by year as long as the school stands1 we shall be glad to name this new hall after the giver1 unless the name should happen to be too un-euphonious4 ,would not this beautiful hall be a fine monument to bear the name of some considerate and generous giver8 ,illustration3 ,,new ,,hall3 ,,dormitory ,,for ,,teachers ,,and ,,pupils4 ,tillotson was chartered under the corporate name of ,institute4 ,this charter has now expired1 and since the institution has blossomed out with the possibilities of a college it is hoped that under the new charter it may bear the name of ,college4 ,it has the following departments3 ,common ,english1 ,normal1 ,college ,preparatory1 ,college1 ,vocal and ,instrumental ,music1 and ,industrial1 and a department for trained nurses4 ,the faculty of the institution has consisted of the president1 the normal principal1 the industrial teacher1 and ten other teachers4 ,the boarding department is conducted upon the model of a ,christian household4 ,the intention is by no means simply to furnish rooms and meals for those who are in attendance1 but also to inculcate ideas of right living and thinking1 which are indispensable to true manhood and womanhood4 ,in the ,common ,english department the purpose is to prepare the pupils thoroughly for the practical duties of life4 ,the ,college ,preparatory gives a careful preparation in the way of language studies which will fit them to enter into the more generous course of study in which they may be fitted to be intelligent preachers and leaders of their race4 ,the demand for college-educated men among the negroes is an intelligent one4 ,this race cannot be elevated unless there can be raised a sufficient number of strong1 earnest men1 thoroughly trained intellectually1 as well as morally2 men who shall have a larger than a local vision1 and who shall stand forth as representative leaders and teachers of those less fortunate than themselves4 ,the ,normal department adds the study of subjects and methods1 for those who are preparing to become teachers among their own people4 ,the ,industrial includes not only manual instruction1 but carpentry1 blacksmithing and mechanical drawing for boys and young men1 and also sewing and dressmaking for girls and young women4 ,illustration3 ,,manual ,,instruction ,,shop4 ,for a young institution the record of ,tillotson is excellent4 ,there are few places in the great empire of ,texas where it has not already become known through its pupils1 or through teachers who have received their education within its walls4 ,being under the care of a distinctively ,christian organization it carries out the intention of its founders in providing religious instruction for all who attend4 ,its ,sunday ,school1 its ,christian ,endeavor ,societies1 its social worship1 its church service1 its mission work1 all intensify the religious influence and religious life4 ,tillotson is far away and needs friends who will give it help4 ,it needs scholarships and professorships4 ,it needs a library1 chemical and philosophical apparatus1 and a printing press4 ,it needs gifts of bedding1 tableware for the halls1 and clothing for needy students4 ,friends1 it needs your ,christian sympathy and ,christian prayers1 that the ,washburn1 ,president of this ,association4 ,while he was seemingly in the fullness of life and while on the platform at the meeting of the ,american ,board he suddenly and unexpectedly fell asleep in death4 ,in a far different way did his successor1 ,rev4 ,william ,m4 ,taylor1 ,d4,d41 meet in quietude and with patient resignation the summons that called him home4 ,the premonition of death came three years ago1 and the march has been steady to the close4 ,during these months his patience and sweet assurance have been as marked illustrations of the power of the ,gospel as other graces were in his more active career4 ,dr4 ,taylor1 long before he became ,president of this ,association1 took a deep interest in its work and brought to it his own personal influence and that of his large and wealthy congregation4 ,as a presiding officer he was constant in his attendance1 and by the dignity of his manner and his great force of character gave guidance and strength to the gatherings of our annual meeting4 ,but ,dr4 ,taylor was broad1 and his sympathies went forth to every form of endeavor for the spread of the ,gospel and the benefit of mankind4 ,with a strong character derived from his eloquence1 his pastoral gifts and the books which flowed from his pen1 he has exerted a wide and salutary influence4 ,on great occasions1 at college anniversaries and at missionary and ecclesiastical gatherings1 ,dr4 ,taylor was one of the most acceptable and efficient speakers4 ,one marked characteristic of ,dr4 ,taylor came from his great heart1 and mellowed and sweetened all his other powers4 behalf of the ,indians4 ,he died at his home in ,washington1 of heart disease1 after an illness of only twelve hours4 ,he was sixty-two years old1 born in ,virginia1 but resident for most of his life in ,new ,england1 where he was an acceptable pastor4 ,he was called from that position into the service of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 acting for a time as ,professor in ,fisk ,university4 ,he1 however1 soon gave his life to promoting the education and civilization of the ,indians1 and for ten years was connected with the ,indian ,rights ,association4 ,it was a tribute to his knowledge and service in the ,indian work that about a year ago he was appointed a member of the ,board of ,indian ,commissioners4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,one ,,missionary ,,day4 ,,miss ,s4,e4 ,,ober1 ,,evarts1 ,,ky4 ,at work again4 ,back from the rest and change of the summer vacation4 ,leaving behind friends and home1 comforts and pleasures1 and nearly all the advantages of civilization4 ,but coming to a greater joy1 a higher privilege than any of these can afford--the high calling of our ,master1 to minister to poor1 needy souls in ,his name4 ,so with great happiness we gather up the loose threads and the dropped stitches of last year's work1 and start anew4 ,come with us through one day1 and taste a few of a missionary's joys4 ,after our household tasks are over1 and we have gained new power from our daily devotions1 we start out on our work4 ,over one hundred boys and girls give us bright greetings as we ride past4 ,we must go on horseback1 as there are no good roads in our vicinity4 ,we are entirely compassed about with mountains2 on every side they lift their grand heads in everlasting testimony of the wonderful handiwork of the ,almighty4 ,but we have little time to gaze upon their beauty1 for more precious creations of the same great ,hand are needing our attention4 ,see this little hovel1 built of rough logs1 scarcely serving to keep out the wind or the rain4 ,let us enter4 ,a most pitiful sight awaits us4 ,the fever has been before us4 ,for months it has raged1 and two human souls have been taken from the family which dwells here4 ,on a rude filthy bed lies the wasted frame of a once stalwart man4 ,he is as feeble as the infant2 a wan child is sitting near by4 ,the mother1 in tattered garments1 totters about her work1 so enfeebled by the disease that her strength is inadequate for her tasks4 ,three of the children are nothing but skeletons1 and sit listlessly on the floor1 taking but little notice of anything going on about them4 ,the thin faces light up at sight of us1 and a cordial welcome is extended4 ,the only whole chair is brought forward for our use4 ,you might expect a torrent of complaints from these poor creatures4 ,but no1 instead come words of praise to ,god that ,he had spared so many of their lives1 that ,he had been with them in their sufferings4 ,a year ago1 when we visited this hut1 we found them stolid and indifferent1 caring nothing for spiritual things4 ,the woman sat smoking over the fire1 scarcely vouchsafing us a word1 and muttered to a crony1 ,wot's thet thar woman nosing 'bout yere for8 ,she'd er heap sight better let we uns erlone4 ,it was very hard to ask permission to hold prayers with them in such a hostile atmosphere1 but it is our duty to sow beside all waters1 so we proffered our request4 ,yer kin ef yer mines ter4 ,i haint er carin'1 was the ungracious reply4 ,but what a change now4 ,the woman's face glows with a light that only comes from the light of the world4 ,god's been mighty good ter we uns1 she says4 ,ef hit hedn't ben fer ,him we'd er died4 ,an' we uns air bound ter do ez near right ez we kin1 an' serve ther ,lord1 ther hull lot on us4 ,does it not make our own hearts glow to hear such words1 and see the wonders ,god hath wrought8 ,and with thanksgiving we read and pray with them1 and strengthen their faith with ,god's ,word4 ,after noting their needs1 and promising to supply them from the articles sent us by generous ,northern friends1 we go on to the next house4 ,we find the same sad state of affairs2 fever-worn men and women1 wasted children1 and starvation and want staring them in the face4 ,but we find also the same great change4 ,god's ,spirit has been working among them1 and hearts are softened and lives changed by ,his power4 ,so we go from hut to hut1 until the way becomes too steep to ride1 and we leave our horses and climb1 on foot1 the lofty1 rocky ridges4 ,we find men who were reckless and bad ready to listen to ,god's ,word1 and in broken voices asking for prayers4 ,we find women who have lived lives of open shame penitent and contrite1 showing by their abandonment of their evil ways that they are sincere when they say1 oh so earnestly1 ,we uns air tryin' ter do right4 ,but all is not so encouraging4 ,we must visit homes where vice reigns supreme2 where women are lost to shame1 and glory in their sin2 where even the children have the trail of the serpent upon their young faces2 where the men are brutal and beastly1 and even sickness does not touch them4 ,let us call at this old log house as we pass2 nestled under a high cliff1 with the creek flowing past1 it looks like some ugly blot on the face of nature4 ,but it is a school-house4 ,there is no window1 no chimney1 only a hole in the side of the house1 opening into a sort of pen of rocks1 in which the fire is built2 an admirable arrangement to send all the heat out of doors1 and the smoke into the house4 ,several rough benches 7that do not invite to ease or comfort7 and an ancient chair complete the furniture of the room4 ,several boards painted black form the blackboards4 ,here we find two tattered urchins and three tiny girls1 whose faces have evidently not made the acquaintance of soap and water for some days4 ,the teacher is one of the advanced pupils of our academy--a bright young man1 who will attend our school when his is completed4 ,we ask where the rest of the scholars are4 ,pulling fodder or stripping cane1 is the reply4 ,and the children have to work so much in the fields that they seldom have the chance of attending school4 ,out of fifty or sixty scholars only a very few ever attend these public schools4 ,but it is growing late1 and we have a long1 rough way before us1 so we spur on toward home1 reaching it just as the glow of the sunset dies away from the last distant peak and the dusky twilight settles down over the whole land4 ,a hurried supper and then to the church prayer meeting4 ,here are gathered quite a number1 and we have a very good meeting1 feeling the presence of our ,saviour in our midst4 ,so closes one of our days1 and wearied in body1 but refreshed and strengthened in spirit1 we go to rest4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,southern around to greet the missionary and to hear the ,gospel4 ,at another point in ,alabama we found a promising field which one of our theological graduates from ,talladega had opened4 ,he began the work in a rented hall at his own cost1 and after he had gathered a congregation and found it a needy and at the same time a hopeful field he raised the ,macedonian cry to the ,american ,missionary ,association for help4 ,the ,pauline heroism of this brother in preaching the ,gospel in his own hired house is shared by our brethren in various parts of our ,southern field4 ,the work is so large and the needs of the people are so great that this spirit of ,christ must be more fully expressed1 both in gifts and service1 to reach the pressing calls for help4 ,i met three interesting characters in the black belt of ,georgia4 ,the first was named ,moses4 ,on meeting him he addressed me with ,you don't knows me1 does you8 ,my name is ,moses4 ,his friend ,uncle ,plenty lived in a little cabin by the roadside4 ,he had heard of the ,association1 and was glad to greet me as one of its missionaries4 ,he told me that he felt so thankful for what the ,northern friends had done for his people that he wished his little cabin and half acre lot to be bequeathed to the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,i dined with ,uncle ,plenty and met ,father ,joshua1 a poor old blind man ninety years of age1 in his cabin4 ,they told me the story of their lives in slavery and how they had prayed to see this day of freedom and light4 ,moses and ,joshua and ,uncle ,plenty are types of the old people and times that are giving place to a new generation and a brighter day4 ,among the new enterprises reported at the meeting of the ,georgia ,association at ,thomasville1 ,ga41 were two churches and several missions from the vicinity of ,columbia1 ,s4,c4 ,i spent ,thanksgiving ,day at ,lowell1 ,n4,c4 ,our mission at this point is the only church in that vicinity4 ,it was the first ,thanksgiving service they had ever enjoyed or even heard of4 ,it was held in a log cabin4 ,lowell is the center of a large negro settlement2 the people have had a hard lot1 and but little opportunity to improve their condition4 ,they are very grateful to hear the ,gospel4 ,forefather's day was observed by the ,nashville churches in the theological hall of ,fisk ,university4 ,we spiritual children of the ,pilgrims honor the fathers whose descendants have enriched us through the ,a4,m4,a4 by the schools and churches that have been planted among us4 ,the church at ,lexington1 ,ky41 had a season of refreshing in ,december1 when several heads of families united with it4 ,howard church1 ,nashville1 also had an awakening with good results4 ,this church has increased its membership fifty per cent4 in fifteen months4 ,jackson ,street ,church1 ,nashville1 held a recognition service for its new pastor in ,january4 ,we were glad to greet the churches and brethren of ,louisiana after an absence from them of two years4 ,the ,spain ,street ,church at ,new ,orleans held a series of ,gospel meetings in which a number avowed their faith in the ,saviour1 and the church was strengthened4 ,straight ,university is crowded with an earnest class of students4 ,this school is doing a great work for the people of ,louisiana and surrounding ,states4 ,in spite of the hard times1 which are very severe in the ,south 7laborers in ,louisiana and some other ,states receive only fifty cents a day and board themselves71 the people are making great sacrifices for the education of their children1 and our pastors and teachers are making heroic struggles that the work in school and church may go forward4 ,the need of the continuance of the work was never greater and the results of the service of our workers were never better4 ,to retrench further at this time would not only cripple the work among the needy peoples of our field1 but shut the door of opportunity in many places1 and injure the people in their efforts to rise1 and discourage our self-sacrificing missionaries4 ,the people are grateful for these schools and churches and need more of them4 ,we appeal to our ,northern friends to come to the attended rhetoricals in which several pupils read compositions on the subject of ,america4 ,he was greatly impressed1 went home1 and wrote without supervision the composition below4 ,although he has put the raccoon1 lion and tiger among the birds1 it is certainly a pretty good composition for the first one written by a child six years of age4 ,could any of the children six years old to whom ,,the
