,inc4 ,new ,york #aibj ,,foreword ,the reason for a compilation such as is here presented should be obvious4 ,swedenborg's theological writings comprise some thirty or more substantial volumes1 the result of the most concentrated labor extending over a period of twenty-seven years4 ,to study these writings in their whole extent1 to see them in their minute unfoldment out of the ,word of ,god1 is a work of years4 ,it is doubtful if there is a phase of man's religious experience for which an interpretation is not here to be found4 ,notwithstanding this immense sweep of doctrine there are certain vital1 fundamental truths on which it all rests3--the ,christ-,god1 ,man a spiritual being1 the warfare of ,regeneration1 ,marriage1 the ,sacred ,scriptures1 the ,life of ,charity and ,faith1 the ,divine ,providence1 ,death and the ,future ,life1 the ,church4 ,we have endeavored to press within the small compass of this book passages which give the gist of ,swedenborg's teachings on these subjects4 ,the compilers would gladly have made room for the interpretative and philosophical teachings which contribute so much to the content and form of ,swedenborg's theology2 but they have confined their effort to setting forth briefly and clearly the positive spiritual teachings1 where these seemed most packed with religious meaning and moment4 ,the translation of the passages here brought together has been carefully revised4 ,,julian ,k4 ,,smyth4 ,,biographical ,,note ,emanuel ,swedenborg was born at ,stockholm1 ,january #bi1 #afhh4 ,a devout home 7the father was a ,lutheran clergyman1 and afterwards ,bishop of ,skara7 stimulated in the boy the nature which was to become so active in his culminating life-work4 ,a university education at ,upsala1 however1 and studies for five years in ,england1 ,france1 ,holland and ,germany1 brought other interests into play first4 ,the earliest of these were mathematics and astronomy1 in the pursuit of which he met ,flamsteed and ,halley4 ,his gift for the detection and practical employment of general laws soon carried him much farther afield in the sciences4 ,metallurgy1 geology1 a varied field of invention1 chemistry1 as well as his duties as an ,assessor on the ,board of ,mines and of a legislator in the ,diet1 all engaged him1 with an immediate outcome in his work1 and often with results in contributions to human knowledge which are gaining recognition only now4 ,the ,principia and two companion volumes1 dedicated to his patron1 the ,duke of ,brunswick1 crowned his versatile productions in the physical sciences4 ,academies of science1 at home and abroad1 were electing him to membership4 ,conspicuous in ,swedenborg's thought all along was the premise that there is a ,god and the presupposition of that whole element in life which we call the spiritual4 ,as he pushed his studies into the fields of physiology and psychology1 this premised realm of the spirit became the express goal of his researches4 ,some of his most valuable and most startling discoveries came in these fields4 ,outstanding are a work on ,the ,brain and two on the ,animal ,kingdom 7kingdom of the anima1 or soul74 ,as his gaze sought the soul1 however1 in the light in which he had more and more successfully beheld all his subjects for fifty-five years1 she eluded direct knowledge4 ,he was increasingly baffled1 until a new light broke in on him4 ,then he was borne along1 in a profound humiliation of his intellectual ambitions1 by another way4 ,for when the new light steadied1 he had undergone a personal religious experience1 the rich journals of which he himself never published4 ,but what was of public concern1 his consciousness was opened into the world of the spirit1 so that he could observe its facts and laws as1 for so long1 he had observed those of the material world1 and in its own world could receive a revelation of the doctrines of man's spiritual life4 ,it was now1 for the first time1 too1 that he gave a deep consideration to the condition of the ,christian ,church1 revealed in otherworld judgment to be one of spiritual devastation and impotency4 ,to serve in the revelation of doctrine for a ,new ,church became his ,divinely appointed work4 ,he forwent his reputation as a man of science1 gave up his assessorship1 cleared his desk of everything but the ,scriptures4 ,he beheld in the ,word of ,god a spiritual meaning1 as he did a spiritual world in the world of phenomena4 ,in revealing both of these the ,lord1 he said1 made ,his ,second ,coming4 ,for the rest of his long life ,swedenborg gave himself with unremitting labor but with a saving calm to this commanding cause1 publishing his great ,latin volumes of ,scripture interpretation and of theological teaching at ,amsterdam or ,london1 at first anonymously1 and distributing them to clergy and universities4 ,the titles of his principal theological works appear in the following compilation from them4 ,upon his death-bed this herald of a new day for ,christianity solemnly affirmed the reality of his experience and the reception by him of his teaching from the ,lord4 ,swedenborg died in ,london1 ,march
