partial and tentative programme of our ,annual ,meeting has been prepared4 ,times are provided for open discussion or the free parliament4 ,but it is deemed necessary to secure some able writers and from whom favorable answers are expected4 ,a marked feature of this meeting will be the unusual number of missionaries and workers from the field1 who will give living pictures of things as they are4 ,following the happy precedent of other years1 each of the co-operative ,congregational societies will be represented by a speaker chosen by itself4 ,these addresses will be brief1 and will manifest the feelings of harmony and comity existing between these societies4 ,the meeting promises to be an interesting and valuable one4 ,the topics discussed are of vital importance to the work1 and the addresses will be worthy of the topics4 ,lowell is accessible1 and its welcome will be cordial4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,lowell4 ,the city of ,lowell has long enjoyed a national1 even world-wide reputation1 as the leading center for the manufacture of cotton fabrics4 ,and1 while this industry offers employment to something like #be1jjj men1 women and children1 there are also enterprises in great variety that do not use cotton fibre in any way1 yet find work for ten to fifteen thousand more toilers4 ,the principal corporations are the ,lawrence1 ,tremont and ,suffolk1 ,merrimack1 ,boott1 ,massachusetts1 ,hamilton and ,appleton1 beside the ,middlesex1 where shawls are made1 and the carpet mills1 where the famous ,lowell carpets are woven4 ,while the city is a veritable beehive of industry1 yet the people find time for recreation1 and have wisely provided breathing places in different parts of the city1 where they can recuperate mind and body4 ,the prominent pleasure resorts are ,fort ,hill park1 the ,north and ,south commons1 ,park ,garden1 the boulevard--extending three miles along the bank of the ,merrimack ,river--and ,lakeview1 an attractive watering-place some five miles out from the center4 ,this latter place is reached by means of the ,lowell and ,suburban ,street ,railway1 an electric line1 which also connects the neighboring villages of ,north ,chelmsford1 ,dracut1 ,north ,billerica and ,chelmsford ,center4 ,a ride to any one of these places costs but twenty cents for the round trip1 and the ,lakeview line is especially interesting at its terminal4 ,the city's moral and educational interests are also well provided for1 as evidenced by the following3 #cj churches1 #dg primary schools1 #aj grammar and #a high school1 besides a training school for teachers1 and a manual training-school for boys2 also a prospective ,state normal school4 ,we also have three or four hospitals1 an old ladies' home1 and a home for young women and children4 ,the police protection consists of a chief1 his deputies1 captains and sergeants1 and about one hundred patrolmen4 ,the fire system of the city is excelled by none in the country1 and is well worthy a careful inspection4 ,lowell is not favored with a great many pretentious edifices on her public streets1 but the most prominent are the new ,city ,hall1 ,high ,school1 ,memorial ,building1 ,state ,armory1 ,st4 ,anne's ,church and the ,federal ,building4 ,the city is already furnished with a thorough water system1 but1 desiring a better quality of water than that taken from the ,merrimack ,river1 she has had a large number of artesian wells driven1 and they now furnish about #c1jjj1jjj gallons of water per day4 ,all the principal streets are well lighted by electric lamps1 and the residential portion by gas4 ,the ,merrimack ,river affords a means of enjoying aquatic sports1 there being rowing boats1 canoes1 sail boats and steamers in abundance4 ,two very enchanting spots up the river are ,tyng's ,island and ,harmony ,grove1 and if one desire a longer trip by water he may ride to ,nashua1 ,n4,h41 by steamer or other boat4 ,the population of ,lowell is probably about #hj1jjj1 and excepting in specially hard times there are few persons to be found in want of a situation4 ,these are only a few of ,lowell's salient points1 but enough is here given to convey to the visitor a very fair idea of the city's make-up4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,financial ,,statement4 ,we wish to present to the friends of the ,american ,missionary ,association a full statement of its financial affairs1 its debt1 its retrenchments2 its still greater debt and the still greater retrenchments that will be inevitable unless during the coming year its receipts can be greatly increased4 ,it is not our aim to make a startling cry for transient relief1 but for a steady increase of receipts to remove debt and insure the stability of the work4 ,at the close of our last fiscal year1 ,september #cjth1 #ahic1 we reported a debt of #de1jbh4aa4 ,in that year we received aid from the ,government for ,indian work4 ,during the eleven months of this year we have received no aid from the ,government1 but our receipts from other sources have increased over those of last year1 and we have cut down our expenditures1 so that if we had received the ,government aid as last year our debt on the eleven months of the current year would be only #e1dji4hj1 but with that loss the actual indebtedness of these eleven months is #bc1icg4aj1 which added to that of the last year makes the total debt ,august #cast #fh1ife4ba4 ,from present indications we can hardly hope for any material reduction of this amount during the current month1 and hence the prospect is that this sum must be reported at our annual meeting4 ,a grave contingency confronts us as we enter 7,october #ast7 on the new year4 ,our great work1 which has lifted thousands of young men and women from ignorance and poverty into hopeful and useful lives1 and which has brought cheer and help to multitudes of homes where poverty has reigned1 must be carried forward2 and our debt1 which has hung as a weight upon this work1 must be wiped out4 ,a constantly increasing debt must be avoided at any cost4 ,the next six or eight months 7the harvest months for collections7 must decide the question4 ,if pastors of churches will lay the matter to heart and secure regular and increased collections1 and if benevolent friends of these struggling races will bear them in remembrance by special contributions1 an uplift of hope and help will be given where now they are threatened with discouragement in their great conflict with poverty1 ignorance and race prejudice4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,capital ,,and ,,labor4 ,capital and labor are twin brothers1 but they have been alienated almost from childhood1 and the strife between them waxes warmer and warmer1 and1 like all other vexed questions1 will never be settled till it is settled right4 ,there are various forms of these troubles--now in the coal mines1 now on the railroads1 and now in the shops--but there are aspects of the struggle which put on national traits and overthrow empires4 ,the ,french ,revolution was a struggle between capital and labor4 ,the capitalists were the aristocracy1 and they monopolized also intelligence and power4 ,with these advantages they ground down labor till patience was changed to implacable rage1 and the reaction brought forth the most serious and terrible massacres recorded in history4 ,our great civil war of #ahfa-fe developed one aspect of the conflict between capital and labor4 ,the slaveholders were the capitalists1 and with them also were the intelligence and power4 ,these levers were used to crush down the laborer into the severest form of slavery known among men4 ,labor was patient1 but large sympathy was developed in the ,north in favor of the slave4 ,this alone would not have brought on the war4 ,southern capitalists gloried in their power1 and1 accustomed to absolute domination over their slaves1 assumed the same attitude of superiority over their fellow-citizens of the ,north4 ,they ruled in ,congress1 dominated over the press and the pulpit1 and1 ambitious to extend their dominion1 demanded larger territory for the extension of the slave system4 ,when this was refused1 they set up an independent standard and brought on the war4 ,the end was disastrous to the ,south4 ,the capitalists were well-nigh ruined and the slaves were set free4 ,on this same plain1 growing out of the embers of that same conflict1 another and almost as threatening a struggle is rising up before us4 ,the white race in the ,south still largely controls capital1 intelligence and power1 and these forces are again used to hinder the impoverished laborer4 ,the white man holds office1 from which the black man is excluded1 who is denied opportunities and privileges which crush his manhood4 ,the contest is again unequal1 and the outcome must take one of two forms4 ,either the oppressed laborer will rise in rebellion--and whatever may be the ultimate result the conflict will be dreadful--or1 on the other hand1 the laborer1 denied education1 a comfortable home and a chance to accumulate property1 will sink into an utterly hopeless degradation1 a curse to himself and to the whole ,south4 ,what is the remedy for all this8 ,there is a remedy1 and if applied promptly may save the nation from either of the catastrophes we have named1 and that is3 ,give the black man a chance to acquire property1 education and power equal to his white neighbor1 and the elements of the struggle are gone4 ,this is the work the ,american ,missionary ,association is attempting to do4 ,it meddles not with theories1 or parties1 but aims quietly to give the needed help to the ,negro4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,our ,,alaska ,,mission4 ,letters received from ,rev4 ,dr4 ,sheldon ,jackson and ,mr4 ,lopp give us the gratifying assurance that the mission is by this time opened under favorable auspices4 ,dr4 ,jackson found on reaching ,alaska that ,mr4 ,lopp had visited the mission at ,cape ,prince of ,wales this spring and discovered that the buildings1 furniture and supplies were in good condition4 ,mr4 ,lopp1 in response to our request1 has consented to return to the ,cape and re-open the mission4 ,he greatly regrets that an ordained minister was not sent1 and expresses the earnest hope that another season this necessary addition will be made1 but he consents to return and do the best he can4 ,he has little fear of violence from the natives1 finding them completely intimidated by the threats of the captain of the revenue cutter ,bear4 ,the experiment of introducing the reindeer into ,alaska is thus far very encouraging4 ,mr4 ,lopp has had a herd under his care at ,port ,clarence1 and although the winter has been unusually severe one hundred and fifty fawns were added to the herd4 ,the ,government has promised to our mission at ,cape ,prince of ,wales this season one hundred reindeer1 and ,mr4 ,lopp1 with adequate help1 will have the care of them4 ,the ultimate success of this experiment with reindeer in ,alaska is one of great promise4 ,it indicates a food and clothing supply for the natives1 with increased facilities for transportation1 thus laying the foundation for growth in population and in civilization4 ,it will be remembered that of the three men connected with the horrible murder of ,mr4 ,thornton1 two were at once arrested by the natives and shot4 ,the third1 ,titalk1 who was the leader1 escaped for the time4 ,mr4 ,lopp thus describes his death3 ,after the ',bear' had left for the ,south1 ,titalk came back to the cape1 and his uncle1 ,te-ed-loo-na led him up on the hillside near the grave of ,mr4 ,thornton1 and asked him how he should put him to death1 strangle him1 stab him or shoot him4 ,the boy preferred to be shot1 so he commanded him to hold his head down and then shot him4 ,mr4 ,lopp furnishes another evidence of the disposition on the part of the leading natives to guard the interests and property of the mission3 ,on one occasion during the winter ,chief ,eliguok heard that a boy had broken into the school-house1 and he announced his intention to kill the boy1 but upon investigation it was found to be a false report4 ,we trust that in the good providence of ,god1 this mission will be made prosperous and be greatly enlarged1 that its missionaries will be preserved in safety1 that the natives will become more orderly1 that the influence of the school and mission may bring to them peaceable fruits of civilization and ,christianity4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,hon4 ,a4,c4 ,,barstow4 ,we record our tribute of sorrow at the death of ,hon4 ,a4,c4 ,barstow1 which occurred ,september #eth4 ,he was for many years intimately and usefully connected with the growth and prosperity of the city of ,providence1 ,r4,i41 which was his home and where he died4 ,he was a man of wide sympathies in ,christian and patriotic work1 having held responsible offices in his native ,state1 and was connected with other public movements1 like that of the ,board of ,indian ,commissioners1 of which for a time he was president4 ,he was a devoted ,christian man1 active in the church of which he was a member1 and deeply interested in the missionary and benevolent boards of the ,congregational churches4 ,he was for a long time a vice-president of our ,association4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,rev4 ,,george ,s4 ,,smith4 ,servant of ,god1 well done6 ,rest from thy loved employ6 ,the battle fought1 the victory won1 ,enter thy ,master's joy6 ,this may be fittingly said of ,rev4 ,g4,s4 ,smith1 who for thirteen years was pastor of the ,congregational ,church at ,raleigh and ,mc,leansville1 ,n4,c41 and who entered into rest on the #abth of last ,august4 ,memorial services were held on the #bfth of ,august in the church where he had long and faithfully conducted the worship of his people4 ,addresses were made by those who had been intimately associated with him in his work1 which testified to the earnestness and success of his ministry4 ,the best proof of his work is to be seen in the intelligence and virtue of the community in which he labored4 ,our field missionary in a recent visit speaks in this way3 ,it is very rare to find colored people under such discipline and so orderly and intelligent in meetings4 ,the faces of the old people are sunny and sweet1 they are so attentive and appreciative and so responsive4 ,the young people were at the meeting in large numbers4 ,it will give you an uplift from your work to spend a day or two with the people of this place in meetings such as they now hold4 ,,the ,,south4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,waldenses ,,at ,,valdese1 ,n4,c4 ,,secretary ,c4,j4 ,,ryder4 ,this new field of work1 which was reported for the first time at our annual meeting last year1 is one of unique and especial interest4 ,two years ago the steamship ,kaiser ,wilhelm arrived in ,new ,york with one hundred and sixty-six ,waldenses among her steerage passengers4 ,these people came from the ,piedmont valley and mountain regions of ,italy4 ,their purpose in coming to ,america was to establish for themselves homes in our own mountain region of the ,south4 ,this little company that came down from the deck of the ,kaiser ,wilhelm were the pioneers in the establishment of their colonies in this new land4 ,they were rather the ,pilgrim ,fathers of this ,waldensean movement4 ,before the actual colonists had come1 ,rev4 ,chas4 ,a4 ,tron1 ,d4,d41 pastor of the ,waldensean ,church1 and member of the ,board of ,evangelization in ,italy1 had been to the mountain regions of ,north ,carolina1 and after careful investigation had purchased a tract of land for these ,waldensean colonists4 ,soon after the coming of these ,waldenses1 correspondence was opened with them by the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,the colony was to be planted in the midst of our great mountain field1 and we had every confidence that the coming of these conscientious and devoted ,christian colonists would be of real helpfulness in our work there4 ,rev4 ,c4,m4 ,prochet1 ,d4,d41 whose name is well known to the readers of this magazine1 and to the ,christian public generally1 came to look after the interests of the ,waldensean colony not long after their first settlement4 ,in conference with ,drs4 ,tron and ,prochet1 and after learning thoroughly the condition of their colony1 an appropriation was voted by the ,executive ,committee to assist them in the beginning of their work1 as they were in great need of such help4 ,these ,waldenses have begun their settlement in ,america in a wise and sensible way4 ,let us notice their business-like arrangement before speaking of the interesting educational and religious work which has developed among them with the assistance of the ,association4 ,they have purchased five thousand acres of land4 ,in dividing this land1 they first set aside a portion for a church and manse1 together with a small farm for the use of the pastor4 ,then they set aside a good1 commodious site for the school-house4 ,after this a considerable portion of the land1 three thousand five hundred acres in extent1 is divided into farms of fifty acres each4 ,in addition to this first company who came on the ,kaiser ,wilhelm1 others have come at various times until there is a considerable colony there4 ,these people are poor4 ,they come from the splendid stock of ,waldenses who have been so potent a factor in freeing thousands in ,france and ,italy from the degrading superstitions of ,romanism4 ,as all our readers know1 the ,waldenses have stood for religious freedom from first to last ,the fibre of their character has been tested through many a conflict4 ,dr4 ,edward ,everett ,hale1 who told the story of the ,waldensean heroism and devotion in the beautiful legend ,in ,his ,name1 brings out the noble features of their character in soft1 yet bright colors4 ,it is most fitting that our ,congregational churches through the ,association should welcome this new colony and extend to them the right hand of ,christian fellowship4 ,this they have done4 ,as soon as the colony was established and the people were felling the forests and building their humble homes1 they applied to us for assistance for the support of the pastor and teacher4 ,the colonists themselves made large sacrifices1 and only asked us to assist them in the support of their religious and educational leaders4 ,rev4 ,enrico ,vinay1 a native of ,italy1 was their first pastor4 ,mr4 ,m4,a4 ,jahier1 was selected as their teacher4 ,mr4 ,jahier1 together with ,dr4 ,tron1 was in conference with us in ,new ,york1 and the simple1 ,christian character and progressive educational ideas of the ,waldensean teacher charmed and impressed us all4 ,he went into the field and opened a school and ,sunday-school at ,valdese1 as the colonists call their mountain village4 ,the ,rev4 ,enrico ,vinay remained with the people for nearly a year1 being in regular correspondence with the officers of this ,association4 ,he was then called to another field1 and ,rev4 ,b4 ,soulier was chosen as their pastor4 ,mr4 ,soulier is also a native of ,italy4 ,he is a thoroughly educated young man1 and speaks ,english readily4 ,he was educated in his own school in ,italy1 and completed a course at ,edinburgh ,university in ,scotland4 ,his work is proving most successful4 ,such is the interesting and providential beginning of our work in conjunction with these ,waldenses in this field4 ,we have this new problem upon our hearts and treasury4 ,who can say that ,god has not led us into this work1 and opened this opportunity for helpful and sympathetic co-operation with these earnest ,christian people who have settled in our southern mountains8 ,in the reports which have been regularly received from this field1 very many items of great interest have been recorded4 ,the ,waldenses1 above everything else1 are ,christian patriots4 ,they love the fatherland and they love also ,america1 the land of their adoption4 ,in one of the reports from ,mr4 ,jahier1 the following interesting information is given3 ,sunday1 ,june #bdth1 ,i preached to a good and attentive congregation4 ,i had the ,sunday-school at half past eight and the preaching at ten in the morning1 and prayer-meeting at four in the afternoon4 ,at this last service ,i went to a farm called ,baziglia4 ,it is named for a place in one of the valleys of ,piedmont--a place which is noted as a fortress during the persecutions of the ,waldensean ,church4 ,it was the refuge of the ,waldenseans when they reconquered their native country after their exile in ,switzerland1 ,germany1 etc41 and in memory of that famous place1 two or three families gave to their farms the same name4 ,the ,fourth of ,july was celebrated here at the school-house4 ,there were forty-four children4 ,i spoke to them of the independence of the ,united ,states of ,america1 its founders1 its ,declaration of ,independence1 etc4 ,for ,july and ,august it is impossible to have the day school2 it is too hot1 but ,i will continue the night school1 ,d4,v41 at least for two or three nights a week4 ,the ,sunday-school will go on as usual--no vacation for the ,sabbath school4 ,the old fortress of ,baziglia witnessed many heroic efforts of the early ,waldenses1 both in defense and attack4 ,the name is very dear to the children of the earlier heroes1 who have established ,valdese in this land1 and so named some of their farms and homes ,baziglia4 ,the glimpse given us in the quotation above1 of the life in this ,waldensean colony1 is an impressive picture and a most hopeful prophecy4 ,these ,waldenses can not prove dangerous foreigners who come to our shores with earnest ,christian plans and purposes1 and read the ,declaration of ,independence to their children on their first ,fourth of ,july in ,america6 ,photographs of the buildings at ,valdese were recently sent to our office4 ,among others was one of the manse and one of the school-house4 ,these two buildings are of especial interest to our constituency1 because we help the pastor and teacher4 ,over the school-house in which our pupils gather was floating the stars and stripes4 ,these earnest people who celebrate the ,fourth of ,july1 who read publicly our ,declaration of ,independence1 who plant the stars and stripes on the top of their school building1 are the kind of foreigners that we need1 and they certainly merit our most cordial assistance in the beginning of their life in our land4 ,in church polity the ,waldensean ,church differs slightly from our ,congregational sisterhood4 ,the local church is independent in the direction of its affairs4 ,they have a ,board of ,evangelization which has supervision of their churches4 ,dr4 ,tron1 a member of this board and president of the ,american branch1 has properly great influence with the local church4 ,the ,waldensean ,church naturally looks to ,dr4 ,tron and ,dr4 ,prochet for counsel and direction4 ,this church at ,valdese recognizes itself as in fellowship with our great ,congregational body1 and especially with the local churches of ,north ,carolina4 ,this new and interesting field has opened more and more largely during the past year1 as additional colonists have come to our shores4 ,despite the financial embarrassment of our treasury1 we rejoice that we have been able to assist these brave and patriotic ,christian people in establishing themselves in this mountain region of the ,south4 ,we believe the opportunity of assistful co-operation with them is one that ,god has opened to us4 ,we have every confidence that the descendants of ,pilgrims and ,puritans will rejoice in the privilege of assisting those in whose hearts there is the same passionate desire for religious freedom1 and who are the children of equally heroic stock4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,notes ,,from ,,the ,,mountains4 ,,by ,,missionary ,,walton4 ,in one of my visits to a neglected home ,i found a little orphan boy of ten years whom ,i invited to our mission ,sunday-school1 and he seemed pleased to know he had a friend4 ,i had told them1 during my visits1 of our little ,sunday-school1 and as ,i was leaving ,i gave him a little ,sunday-school card with a beautiful verse of scripture and asked him if he could read1 whereupon1 he answered1 ,no2 then ,i asked his foster-mother if she would teach him the text--she promised1 as by this time she too was getting interested4 ,i left them seemingly glad for the little time ,i had spent with them in their home4 ,some time after this ,i was going down town1 moving briskly along1 when a small boy came plump up against me1 saying1 ,hello1 mister6 don't you know me8 ,you're the ,sunday-school man which was to our house4 ,i know you4 ,o yes1 ,i know you now1 and ,i said1 tell me about yourself4 ,i have been to ,sunday-school four ,sundays1 and have a nice teacher1 and enjoy going very much2 we are in a little class and have lesson-picture papers1 and ,i like it so much ,i want to go every ,sunday and all the time4 ,i know a boy who does not go to ,sunday-school1 and he has promised to go with me next ,sunday4 ,saturday evening1 ,june #b;d1 it was my privilege to meet with the ,mossy ,grove ,christian ,endeavor ,society4 ,about forty-five young people were present and took a hearty part in the meeting--quite a number joined in prayer during the twenty minutes' prayer service4 ,this service was all the more interesting because a work of our planting1 and from a very small beginning has grown and is full of ,christian earnestness4 ,this was the home of the unfortunate man ,i had found as ,i went through the mountains4 ,it was my privilege to look into that man's face and note the change that had come to him4 ,in the ,sunday-school ,i was teacher of his class4 ,he seemed interested in the lesson and showed evidence of being a changed man4 ,as ,i preached of the sprinkled blood he somehow appreciated all the more how he had been rescued4 ,in the house-to-house work among this people ,i found many encouraging results and think our work there will develop until we have a church organization4 ,in one county ,i found a number of people off by themselves in a little nook of a valley1 but not over two miles from ,sunday-school and church1 yet not attending4 ,as ,i went into their homes and talked about their opportunities and duties1 many promises were given that the future would find them more active for themselves and children4 ,one man who had not been in ,sunday-school for four years made a humble confession1 and pledged that he would go to work4 ,he spoke of his early life with its ,christian activities1 and now when he has a family he has neglected to take them and go to the house of ,god4 ,so many men are waiting for somebody to lead them to their duty--they see it and know it--but have not moral courage to go forward unless encouraged in some special way4 ,on ,children's ,day ,i was in ,pleasant ,view1 and am sure if our ,northern friends could have looked in and have seen the bright1 happy children that were engaged in their first ,children's ,day service they would have been encouraged and rejoiced4 ,of course the service was far from perfect1 but while this was true they were having a new experience4 ,i had told them about ,children's ,day1 and urged them to use our order of exercises1 which they did1 but the songs and recitations were too hard for most of them2 yet1 as ,i saw the real effort and interest1 ,i could not restrain the well done4 ,but this was not all2 ,i was again to be surprised when the names were called and the little envelopes presented with their little ,children's ,day offering4 ,they were happy in the thought of doing something for the good people who had aided them4 ,they are very poor people and cannot do much1 but a great change has come over them since ,i first found them4 ,our ,christian ,endeavor meeting that day was one of profit and help to all4 ,one little boy about ten years old led in prayer4 ,during the month there have been two hopeful conversions and many evidences of spiritual strengthening and growth4 ,on the other hand1 hundreds are waiting for some one to help them while the water is troubled4 ,in all the meetings of the month there has been a marked evidence of spiritual interest4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,nolichucky ,,jack',s ,,descendants4 ,,rev4 ,,jos4 ,e4 prairies two of those worthy representatives should confront the preacher1 who found his response to be1 ,well1 ,i didn't say anything bad about ,john ,sevier1 did ,i8 ,what a grand coalescing of blood was that which in the gathering of our nation brought ,knickerbocker and ,huguenot1 ,scotch1 ,irish and ,english and ,germans1 with congenial ,danes and ,swedes1 into our people's life4 ,it was a most notable example of his subject1 while to report his lecture1 with its impromptu sallies of wit and wisdom1 would be almost impossible4 ,he instanced many men as illustrations and especially interested his audience with stories of personal interviews with ,lincoln1 ,seward1 ,greeley1 ,stanton1 ,grant and others during and after the war4 ,but most thrilling was the story of a slave boy and his following him from his early years1 his learning to read and write1 his conversion and desire to become a preacher1 praying for three or four years1 every morning1 noon and night1 that ,god would set him free1 and how that his prayers were not answered till he prayed with his heels4 ,at about seventeen years he ran away1 reaching ,massachusetts1 where he publicly told his story1 till1 hearing for the ,master for some time were ordained to the ,christian ministry1 and received the right hand of fellowship1 extended by ,rev4 ,c4,f4 ,reed1 of ,pierre4 ,then followed the double wedding of two knowing but dimly the way themselves4 ,oh1 that we might gather more into ,christian schools1 that intelligent as well as earnest ,christians may be the leaders among these people in the future4 delightful1 helpful services of the day4 ,but a little later1 there was still another meeting in the evening that will not soon be forgotten by those who were present4 ,after the sun went down1 in the long twilight that lingers so late here1 the women gathered in a large circle on the green grass for a women's meeting4 ,there were about forty women present1 including those who formed a row outside1 who wore the ,dakota costume1 and wished only to see and hear from outside1 and come in at last to the feast4 ,the meeting was led by ,mrs4 ,t4,l4 ,riggs2 portions of ,scripture were read1 prayers kindness and encouragement to the women1 and their remarks were interpreted by ,mrs4 ,riggs4 ,after the close of this meeting the men were escorted to the center of the circle1 and soup1 which had been preparing in numerous kettles near by1 was served to all4 ,we were glad to sit in the circle with those ,indian mothers and speak to them of their children1 our love for them1 and how we were trying to help them4 ,one could not be in such a typical gathering of ,indians without noting the intelligent faces and strength of character depicted in them4 ,one is continually surprised1 not at the depravity of this people1 but with their many good traits1 and the progress they are making in the face of so many obstacles4 ,on ,monday morning the council listened to reports from the field1 and then adjourned4 ,we were now soon on our way home4 ,about sundown we reached the river opposite ,oahe1 but it was very much swollen and rapid4 ,while we sat on the bank and ate supper from what remained in our provision boxes1 we saw the young man who was to bring a boat across for us1 struggling against the current4 ,as he seemed unable to cross1 we began preparations for spending the night there under the clear sky1 but at last he succeeded in crossing in a little boat1 and by much hard work and skillful rowing1 taking two each time1 ,mr4 ,t4,l4 ,riggs was able before midnight to land most of us on the other side in safety1 though the swift current and much driftwood made this somewhat hazardous4 ,the rest made themselves as comfortable as possible without tents1 and came over in the morning4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,indian ,,mission ,,collections4 ,not long ago a collection for benevolent purposes was taken among the ,indians in the church at ,fort ,berthold4 ,supt4 ,hall1 of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 writes the following3 ,the collection amounts to #ae4jb1 and will be increased by out-stations4 ,there were about twenty ,indians in the congregation1 and as all were not there a messenger was sent to have another collection taken in the evening at the meeting at ,deacon ,many ,bears' house4 ,our people are always ready to give what they can4 ,the boys and girls of the school1 thirty-eight in number1 all took a hand1 giving of their allowances or earnings4 ,little lame ,bertha wrote her name down for eleven cents1 which was the 'widow's mite' with her4 ,the names of some of the ,indian contributors are3 ,red ,fox1 ,strieby ,horn1 ,little ,eagle1 ,andrew ,crow1 ,fighting ,bear1 ,mrs4 ,two ,bears1 ,mrs4 ,rough ,horn1 ,mrs4 ,jack ,rabbit and ,louisa ,crow ,tail4 ,the ,sunday was a cold one1 ten degrees below zero1 and some of our leading members were camping out on their way with food supply from ,minot1 sixty miles north over a trackless waste of snow4 ,one ,monday morning ,andrew ,crow came in on horseback1 with the result of the previous evening's contribution4 ,we get little change here1 so we put down the amount to be given on paper1 and settle the account as we can by exchanges or work4 ,we do not have many unpaid subscriptions4 ,such facts as these abundantly prove that our ,indian ,christians are realizing the responsibility upon them to assist with their means in these great missionary movements4 ,if all the churches in the land would give according to their ability as generously as did this ,indian church on the prairie1 not one of our benevolent societies would need suffer4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,chinese4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,present ,,distress4 ,,by ,,rev4 ,w4,c4 ,,pond1 ,d4,d4 ,it is everywhere1 and if in our little corner we feel the first impulse to murmur1 we hear1 forthwith1 from the great apostle3 ,there hath no trial taken you but such as is common to man4 ,and yet the trial is none the less severe1 the distress is none the less intense1 because it is universal4 ,it may be that misery likes company1 though ,i could never see why1 but in this instance ,i can truly say1 would that we suffered alone6 ,i foresaw almost six months ago that the universal stringency would bring us an empty treasury long before the close of our fiscal year4 ,it seemed due in justice to our workers to forewarn them of this4 ,i told them that ,i would do my best for them1 but that for the months of ,june1 ,july and ,august this might amount to nothing2 that ,i was not allowed1 and ought not to be1 to use the resources of the new year to meet any deficits from the old one1 and that ,i was under solemn pledge to one of our chief benefactors never to let the mission run in debt4 ,consequently ,i could not and would not blame them if they ceased work and closed the schools4 ,i am proud to say that not one teacher was found to accept my proposal4 ,one of them wrote3 ,i am very sorry you are so short of funds4 ,i feel sure that ',in some way or other1 ,the ,lord will provide4' ,at any rate ,i shall not join the strikers1 but keep right on4 ,another said3 ,whatever stops1 the work must not stop2 pay or no pay1 ,i shall keep up the school4 ,gin ,foo ,king wrote from ,san ,bernardino1 with a sort of lofty contempt of the unbelief that could stop work for lack of pay3 ,god will take care of us2 why should we fear8 ,joe ,dun1 the latest addition to our force of helpers1 and one from whose work for ,christ ,i expect glad fruitage right along1 replied to my message of deep regret that ,i could forward no salary to him for ,june services3 ,you need not send money2 ,i have rice4 ,rice with water to boil it in1 is good enough1 some think1 for any ,chinaman4 ,perhaps it is4 ,at any rate ,joe ,dun thinks that if that is all ,god gives it must be all he needs4 ,nevertheless our helpers1 especially in the beginnings of service1 must work the brain hard1 and ought to have brain nutriment4 ,and unless ,i can send something to him now1 even his rice will fail4 ,what is thus expressed by some in words has been expressed in acts by all4 ,it is a great relief to know that the work is going on1 and at some points better than ever at this season of the year4 ,it is a relief to know that there are no broken promises1 and no accumulation of debt1 involved in my failure to remit4 ,but for this1 the distress would be intolerable2 the trial greater than ,i could possibly bear4 ,but when ,i bring up the case of some of our most faithful and successful workers1 and realize the fact1 which ,i know to be a fact1 that they are dependent on the little salaries they are wont to receive from me for very subsistence1 my forewarning passes out of remembrance1 and the whole burden rolls down upon my heart4 ,god knows what he is doing1 and ,i cast my care upon him and rest4 ,but it seems to me that from somewhere the few hundreds of dollars--not more than #ejj needed in addition to what ,i have reason already to hope for--must come4 ,whenever it has been possible ,i have thrown the responsibility of sustaining the missions upon the localities in which they are situated4 ,and in many cases this responsibility has been assumed with a cheerfulness and a generosity1 considering the times1 which has been greatly encouraging to me4 ,and ,i cannot but hope that herein will be found one of the compensations for our anxiety and pain--a deeper and more general interest on the part of ,christian people in this branch of the service of their ,lord4 ,one of the teachers1 giving an account of a meeting which she held in the interest of her mission1 anticipates such a result and says3 ,i feel sure that my hard1 lonesome times are over1 and that after this ,i shall have more help and sympathy4 ,isn't it wonderful how doing a hard duty will sometimes straighten out so many tangles8 ,i venture to close this little sketch of hard heartwork with another quotation from this same teacher3 ,i sympathize with you in not being able to pay us teachers as you would like to do when you know how we work4 ,but don't worry any more over me1 for ,i shall manage splendidly 7as ,i always do874 ,i guess you feel a good deal worse over it than we teachers do4 ,sacrifice is in order for missionaries and preachers1 but we get pay that the world knows not to the ,bible ,house1 ,new ,york1 for leaflets that will tell what the ,american ,missionary ,association is1 and what it is trying to do1 especially for the ,indians4 ,read the following letter1 by ,miss ,mary ,p4 ,lord1 our missionary among the ,sioux ,indians1 and let us know what you will do to help teach ,indian boys how to become good men3 ,dear ,boys3 ,no doubt you are already interested in ,indians1 from stories you have read of them4 ,and perhaps you think they are very strange people1 quite unlike white people4 ,in some ways they are4 ,but if you could come out here to our little ,indian village 7,little ,eagle ,village it is called71 on the ,standing ,rock ,reservation in ,dakota1 ,i think you would very soon be playing with the ,indian boys just as merrily as you do now with your boy friends at home4 ,perhaps ,ben ,black ,dog would show you some of the little gumbo images that he made when the mud was soft1 and then it grew dry and hard1 as the clay does that some of you use in school2 and perhaps he would show you how he makes his life-like horses and riders1 and buffaloes1 and dogs1 and all the rest4 ,one day ,i saw some boys playing with their gumbo figures1 and heard one of the boys say akicita1 which is the ,dakota word for soldier2 so ,i suppose little ,indian boys play soldier1 too6 ,then every ,indian boy from the time he is a baby has his pony4 ,one ten-year-old boy was telling me the other day what good care he tried to take of his pony1 and ,i was very glad he thought about it1 and knew that his ,charlie ought to be well cared for4 ,all the boys like to ride1 but sometimes they forget that their ponies ought to be kindly treated1 and to have proper food and rest4 ,indian boys have their favorite games1 too1 just as white boys do1 only their games are different4 ,one is throwing long1 slender sticks1 which they make in a certain way2 but in order to know just how they make and throw them1 you may have to come and see them do it4 ,i am afraid ,i cannot tell you4 ,and they like to run1 and jump1 and play together very much as you do1 only 7shall ,i say it87 ,i think they are more quiet in their playing than many white boys ,i have seen and heard4 ,they are not all alike any more than white boys are4 ,some are naturally very bright and quick to think and to act1 and others not as much so4 ,some of the boys and men are diligent and hard workers1 while others are lazy4 ,some like to study1 and others like better to play4 ,a large new ,government boarding-school has been lately built in our little village for the ,dakota boys and girls4 ,one very cold day1 a boy1 perhaps fourteen years old1 came walking fifteen miles1 without overcoat or mittens1 and alone1 to ask if he might be received as a pupil in the new school4 ,i think he must be one of the boys who likes to study1 and who wants to learn4 ,such boys get ahead4 ,some ,indian boys are naturally very gentle in their manner1 and although their clothing may be ragged and dirty1 and the homes in which they live are not nearly so bright and attractive as perhaps your father's stable is1 yet these boys appear as gentlemanly as if accustomed to the little courtesies of the parlor in civilized life4 ,one verse in the ,bible says3 ,as he thinketh in his heart1 so is he1 and ,i think it is the gentle thoughts in the hearts of these ,indian boys that make some of them so truly gentlemen1 notwithstanding their surroundings and lack of training4 ,some things that they say and do are very funny4 ,after one of our village boys had been to the new boarding-school two or three weeks1 he came to our house one day of an errand4 ,while he waited1 he said to ,winona 7that is ,miss ,collins7 ,do you sleep on a bed the way we do at school8 ,she told him that she did1 and then he said3 ,a long time ago1 when ,i was little and not very wise1 ,i used to come here to your house1 and ,i always thought you slept on that table the dining-table but1 now ,i am beginning to see clearly4 ,the same ten-year-old friend gave me a lesson one day in digging potatoes4 ,and another time when he had ridden the pony ,bessie to drink at the river1 his younger brother came to the house with him4 ,the two are as devoted brothers as any that ,i know1 and when ,i reached out ,ben's pay toward him1 he motioned me to give it to ,daniel instead4 ,very likely it was shared afterward1 but at least ,i thought it showed a generous spirit of brotherly love4 ,fourth of ,july and ,christmas are great days here as well as among our white friends in the ,east4 ,this year ,i had the pleasure of attending two ,christmas-tree celebrations4 ,the first was at our little church ,christmas evening4 ,the house was full1 some of the boys and young men being obliged to sit on the edge of the little platform and on the floor1 and everybody seemed happy4 ,the next evening ,i drove about six miles1 to the ,oak ,creek ,station1 to share in the festivities at ,cross ,bear's house4 ,there1 too1 they had a tree1 and a ,santa ,claus dressed up in a big1 shaggy1 fur coat1 a very tall hat decorated with ,indian designs1 and in his hand he carried a stout staff on which he leaned1 as if he felt the burden of many winters4 ,he was just as funny as your ,santa ,claus1 as he stood bowing and bowing1 and making his little speech4 ,indians like to have a good time all together1 whether it is ,fourth of ,july1 or ,christmas1 or a prayer-meeting1 or a feast4 ,and we are very thankful that now they enjoy meeting in these ways1 instead of having the old-time heathen dances4 ,we are thankful that when we speak of ,indians now1 we do not mean a race of people who are only waiting for a chance to scalp us4 ,they are our friends1 as we are theirs4 ,god has been revealed to them1 and they are coming out of their heathen darkness into ,his light1 and they are learning how to live purer and better lives1 to think new thoughts1 and to be ,christian men instead of heathen savages4 ,we who have always known of ,god1 and heard ,his word1 must help them in ,his name4 ,think1 dear boys1 if there is anything that you can do4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,woman',s ,,state
