,the inhabitants are described by ,capt4

aggressive people of all the ,arctic    
coast4 ,they are such a turbulent crowd 
that the whalers are afraid to visit

would not be safe to send a woman there1

sending of two men at first4 ,if        
difficulties arise1 they will be a      
mutual strength1 and if the teacher gets
 sick1 there will be some one to attend 
him4 ,from the time that the revenue    
cutter passes south in ,august and the  
whalers in ,september1 these men will be
 shut up with the natives and thrown    
upon their own resources and ,god's     
protection until the following ,june or 
,july4 ,i would advise that the         
missionaries be large men physically1 as
 size impresses the natives favorably1  
and there may be times when they will   
need to remove a turbulent man from     
their room by physical force4  ,we have 

sent out our call for the missionaries4

 who have not in themselves the stuff of

of the races we are accustomed to speak 
of the color prejudice4 ,we know very   
well that there is a most assertive     
prejudice against colored people4 ,rev4 
,dr4 ,wright1 in his admirable address  
at ,chicago1 said1 ,the cause is this3  
,all free-born people in every age and  
clime have a contempt for slaves4 ,the  
sole reason of the persistence of the   
caste feeling is that the black man     
belongs to a race which has been        
enslaved4 ,the inference is1 therefore  
your character is a servile character4  
,the common judgment has been that the  
prejudice is against color4 ,a little   
observation1 however1 will show that    
,southern people have no prejudice      
against color as such4 ,color ceases to 
be repugnant when it ceases to be       
unfamiliar4  ,i have been led to        
conclude that a great part of what is   
called the color prejudice1 may be      
charged up to the fact of feature4 ,the 
features1 in the people of every race1  
are offensive when they are coarse and  

carnal4 ,for example1 among a class of  
the ,irish peasantry long ignorance and 
lowdown life have given to the children 
an heredity of ingrained coarseness4 ,it
 is visible in a certain stamp of the   
features4 ,education and elevation will 
gradually reduce the animalism of the   
face4 ,with good breeding1 in           
generations the lips grow thinner2 the  
face takes on character and even changes
 in shape4  ,the ,negro condition at    
present is one of immaturity4 ,the      
,uncle ,rastus side of ,negro character 
and life may be seen every day in the   
,southern ,negro4 ,the immaturity of the
 race and its revelation and expression 
in feature and in character1 repel more 
than color does4 ,the antipathy against 
color in the ,south is reduced to its   
very lowest terms1 as facts prove4  ,the
 way to destroy the prejudice which     
exists both by association with the     
ideas of bondage and by features which  
are not refined1 is a common one4       
,education is the only way4 ,i have been

 surprised to see how rapidly education1
 especially religious education and the 
refining influence of good associations1
 are eliminating both the idea that     
color is a badge of a servile mind1 and 
the inherited coarseness of features4   
,the educated children of educated      
parents are in many instances already   
showing in their faces the mettle of    
their pasture4 ,there is a perceptible  
growth away from immaturity and         
coarseness of feature1 along with the   
growth away from immaturity of mind4    
,twenty-five years1 indeed1 is a short  
time for a study of this sort4 ,it is   
hardly to be counted in the history of a
 race4 ,a century is but a unit in the  
problem of a people's history4 ,we have 
no right to form our judgments yet1 as  
to the place the ,negro people may take4
 ,what three or four centuries may do   
for the race is to be settled too       
remotely for us to testify4  ,a         
distinguished educator lately said that 
he had been disappointed in the         

intellectual ability and resources of   
the ,negro4 ,the race had not shown     
itself to be hopeful4 ,i reply1 if in   
twenty-five years we have the few       
remarkable instances of advancement and 
attainment which appear1 together with a
 very large general uplift in education 
and character1 may not these facts be   
the prophecies and pledges of a future  
that shall not be inferior4  ,even now  
the difference between the uneducated   
and the educated black man is very      
striking4 ,the crudeness and the        
unrefinement in feature are not         
necessary accompaniments of color4      
,thick lips do not inherently belong    
with a dark skin4 ,coarseness of feature
 belongs to white people1 long degraded1
 as well1 and is to be eliminated in    
them also by the evolution which takes  
place in schools and churches4  ,here is
 a race from original heathenism which  
has come through two hundred years of   
the darkness of slavery1 set free in    
exceedingly unhelpful conditions1 and   

shut in for the most part to association
 with illiteracy1 bad manners1 bad      
morals and bad habits4 ,only            
exceptionally can colored people come   
near enough to those who are high and   
good to get much good by seeing what    
goodness is and how it lives4  ,yet1    
notwithstanding this1 history reveals   
nothing more wonderful than what we see 
in those who have come from homes which 
are not homes and from previous         
degrading influences1 as they pass      
through a term of years in our schools4 
,when the generations to come from these
 shall have had for a century the       
impartial blessings of an intelligent   
and pure ,christianity1 the question as 
to the ,negro's place among the races   
will be nearer solution4         99

entered upon the fruition of many       
earnest hopes and desires1 in the       
opening of the boarding department1 in  
connection with the day school4 ,we have
 now a large family of boarding pupils  
living in the beautiful new dormitory1  
erected last summer through the interest
 of ,mr4 ,ballard1 who gave us our      
commodious school building one year ago4
 ,as memory goes back to the early days1
 from #ahfe to #ahfh1 when this school  
was in its infancy1 and was taught in   
various barns1 dwelling houses and      
churches1 and as we recall the loss by  
fire of three buildings in #ahgf1 and   
the subsequent use of the church and our
 present carpenter shop for             
school-rooms1 we dwell with gratitude   
upon the ministrations of friends in    
past years1 and especially upon that    
visit of ,mr4 ,ballard1 which resulted  
in these handsome buildings4 ,it was    
thought that our new brick school-house1

 with seven school-rooms1 one           
recitation-room1 and office1 would      
furnish accommodations to all pupils for
 several years to come4 ,but already1   
just one year from its dedication1 it is
 found necessary to open an additional  
school-room in an adjacent building4    
,the enrollment for this year is five   
hundred and eighty-four4 ,an unusual    
number of young men and women from      
neighboring counties1 are availing      
themselves of the opportunities here    
offered to acquire an education4

to be the safe and trusted leaders of   
their people in the crisis which is

therefore1 of its being unwise to       
educate the ,negro1 as some ,southern   
white people believe1 the ,christian    
education of these colored people will  
be the sheet anchor of safety to both

specimen of the counsel given by the    
influential ,christian ,negro1 we clip  
the following from the ,christian       
,recorder of ,philadelphia1 the organ of
 the ,african ,methodist ,episcopal     
,church3      ,while we believe in all  
men being courageous1 we encourage none 
to     be rash4 ,we are at the mercy of 
a powerful class4 ,it is always     best
 to remember this and apply the ounce of
 preventive to save     the fifteen     
ounces of cure4 ,our brethren must be   
very careful in     respect to the      
position taken on all subjects4 ,take no
 position     from which you are likely 
to be forced to your disadvantage4 ,in  
all writing and speaking forget not that
 discretion is the bitter     part of   
valor4  ,we append1 as germane to the   
subject1 the following piece of sensible

,i have no faith in the doctrine of     
assimilation4 ,the blacks may     say   
their color is against them4 ,if that   

could only be changed1     all would be 
well4 ,i believe that color has nothing 
to do with the     question4 ,black is a
 favorite color4 ,a black horse we all  
admire4     ,a black silk dress is a    
gem4 ,a black broadcloth suit is a      
daisy4     ,black only loses its        
prestige1 its dignity1 when applied to a
     human being4 ,it is not because of 
his color1 but because of his           
condition1 that the black man is in     
disfavor4 ,whenever a black     face    
appears1 it suggests a poverty-stricken1
 ignorant race4     ,change your        
conditions2 exchange immorality for     
morality1     ignorance for             
intelligence1 poverty for prosperity1   
and the     prejudice against our race  
will disappear like the morning dewdrop

common view among us when he     said in

once thought that ,negroes were         
incapable of education1 but we     have

progress of the past twenty-five years2 
to compare views of the status and needs
 of the work1 and to consider plans for 

the future4 ,it was felt that there were
 certain questions and special needs    
arising out of the condition of the     
colored people in this country1 which   
required earnest consideration1 the     
solution of which rests largely with the
 ,negro himself4 ,the presence of so    
many colored men and women who had      
graduated from the institutions of      
learning they now seek to foster1       
including ,presidents of colleges and   
normal schools and principals and       
teachers of public schools1 professors  
of ,greek1 ,latin1 mathematics and      
theology1 physicians1 lawyers and       
ministers1 was an object-lesson of the  
educational progress of the race4  ,able
 papers were read on practical subjects 
of all phases of educational work4      
,industrial work1 normal training and   
higher education1 were fruitful topics  
of discussion4 ,while each had its      
advocates1 it was the consensus of      
opinion that each of these departments  
has its place1 and that all were needed 

in the education of our colored youth4  
,judge ,tourgee addressed the           
,conference on ,national ,aid to        
,education2 and ,hon4 ,w4,t4 ,harris1   
the ,commissioner of ,education1        
advocated the higher education of the   
,negro4 ,national ,aid to ,education was
 strongly advocated by the ,conference1 
and is emphasized in their address to   
the country4 ,that address commends     
itself to the thoughtful consideration  
of the friends of education4 ,the report
 closes with the following appeal in    
behalf of the institutions that have    
been established in the ,south3 ,a      
crying need at the present hour is the  
making permanent of the larger and more 
central institutions of learning for

money come from these generous churches 
in response to the appeals of our       
different ,societies4  ,it was pleasant 
to turn aside for a few weeks and mount 
again into the saddle1 and visit the    
field into which these contributions go1

 and where so many earnest and godly    
missionaries are putting in their life  
work4 ,there were evidences of progress 
in these mission stations on every side4
  ,lincoln ,memorial ,church at         
,washington have greatly improved their 
house of worship1 expending upon it

membership almost this entire sum4      
,industrial classes are held regularly  
in the same building1 taught by the     
pastor's wife4 ,a kindergarten1 in which
 a large number of little children are  
regularly taught1 is also a department  
of this missionary work4 ,i noticed     
among the other children a bright little
 ,french boy in this kindergarten       
school4  ,while waiting for a train in  
the depot at ,washington1 ,i noticed an 
old colored man very busy reading a     
book4 ,looking over his shoulder1 ,i    
found that he was studying ,barnes'     
,notes on ,matthew6 ,no white man was   
better employed than this4 ,and this    
incident is typical of the desire of the

 colored people to learn1 especially    
that which throws light upon ,god's     
word4  ,excitement ran high in ,florida 
over the murder of ,united ,states      
,marshal ,saunders4 ,a ,southern man on 
the street1 not knowing that any        
,northern man was present1 remarked to a
 friend as follows3 ,i would not give   
#bej to any man to shoot a ,united      
,states ,marshal1 but ,i would give #ejj
 to help defend any man that shot him4  
,the colored people were agitated over  
this murder1 for it hinted at the       
possibility of general outrage and      
murder1 in which they would be          
sufferers4 ,i heard in a colored church 
in ,st4 ,augustine the following prayer3
 ,o ,lord6 overcome those who oppress   
us1 not by sword and bayonet and blood1 
but by the power of the ,gospel of the  
,lord ,jesus ,christ4 ,when the spirit  
that that prayer breathes becomes the   
spirit of the whole people of the       
,south1 black and white1 the present    
desperate condition of things will come 

to an end4  ,the ,girl's ,industrial    
,school at ,thomasville1 ,ga41 is       
crowded with pupils4 ,the dormitory     
accommodations provide room for only    
forty pupils1 and forty-two are already 
there4 ,one feature of the work in this 
school is especially worthy of mention2 
and that is1 the thorough study of the  
,bible4 ,this is systematic and         
comprehensive4 ,it does not consist in  
learning and repeating1 in a parrot-like
 way1 different dates and names4 ,it is 
analytical1 both in history and         
biography4 ,it also includes careful    
study of ,biblical geography4 ,i am sure
 those in the ,north who visit this     
school will be especially gratified by  
the success in this department of the   
school work4  ,while looking for a      
friend in ,tallahassee1 ,fla41 ,i       
visited his office two or three times4  
,the office-boy finally informed me that
 he had gone to ,liberia4 ,i asked him  
whether ,liberia was a country or a     
town1 and he replied3 ,why1 boss6 it's  

de place dey reads books4 ,he meant the 
library4 ,i related this experience to  
the barber at the hotel1 and he turned  
to the porter and said1 ,you make just  
such mistakes1 porter4 ,the porter      
replied1 ,yes1 ,i knows ,i makes

sentimental mistake was one that was    
made in a sentence4 ,big words never    
stumble them4 ,and yet1 little by little
 they are gaining in the use of

observes the ,christian bearing of the  
,roman ,catholics toward the colored    
people in the ,south1 and the           
unchristian bearing of many ,protestant

,i saw graceful white ladies kneeling   
side by side with black women1 and      
worshiping together4 ,at ,pensacola ,i  
went into a ,catholic church1 and there 
in a crowded audience were colored and  

white people sitting in adjoining pews  
with perfect freedom4 ,i went from here 
into a ,methodist church1 and there was 
not a single colored person present4 ,it
 would not be strange if the ,roman     
church gathered into its fold a large   
part of the ,negroes of the ,south4     
,whatever may be the superstition and   
errors of their church1 they do         
recognize in every human being a child  
of ,god1 and offer to all freedom in

pastor of ,macon could furnish1 they    
asked to have one of their own number   
licensed as a leader4 ,a ,council of    
churches was called at ,andersonville1  

and the candidate presented himself for 
examination4  ,he was a working man in  
middle life2 his personal appearance    
bespoke him better fitted for the       
blacksmith's forge than the pulpit4 ,his
 literary qualifications reached their  
limit when he could slowly read from his
 pocket ,testament that ,god so loved   
the world1 and ,jesus ,christ came into 
the world to save sinners4 ,in theology1
 he was prepared to discuss1 with race  
shrewdness and quaint corn-field        
illustrations1 the doctrines of election
 and future punishment4 ,his            
,congregationalism comprised three      
points1--,to live by the ,bible1 to have
 only one wife1 and to not drink        
whiskey--good points for that time1 and 
popularly supposed to represent the new 
denomination4  ,his spirit was          
excellent1 as1 with genuine humility1 he
 expressed his wish to serve the church 
only until it could command the         
ministrations of some one of better     
education and more general fitness for  

the position4 ,his personal experience  
of religion was satisfactory1 as were   
also the testimonials to his character1 
and so the ,council licensed him to     
preach1 ,pastor ,rogers1 of ,macon1     
giving him an earnest charge to be      
faithful in the service of ,christ4     
,,now4  ,the circumstance had faded from
 my mind1 but suddenly was remembered   
two days ago1 when sitting in the       
congregation that had gathered in the   
chapel of ,livingstone ,hall1 ,fisk     
,university1 to listen to the           
examination of ten young men who        
presented themselves to the ,central    
,south ,association for license to      
preach4 ,these candidates were          
physically and mentally alert1 active1  
strong4 ,with a single exception they   
were under thirty years of age4         
,besides the ordinary helps of          
,concordance and ,bible ,dictionary1    
more than half of these young men in    
studying the ,scriptures1 can pick up   
from their study tables1 ,testaments in 

,german1 ,french1 ,latin and ,greek1 to 
gather the light these translations may 
throw upon any passage4  ,their theology
 was clear1 and showed acquaintance with
 the best thought upon the whole range  
of subjects4 ,their ,congregationalism  
embraced two points1 independence and   
fellowship4 ,the right of private       
judgment based upon intelligent study of
 the ,word of ,god1 apparently covered  
the ground of their church polity4 ,they
 hold modern ideas regarding ,christian 
work along the lines of missions1

,cross ,leagues1 ,christian ,endeavor

organizations4 ,all have had experience 
in some of these branches of work4 ,the 
,association licensed nine of them for  
one year1 and ordained the tenth to the 
regular work of a minister of the       
,gospel4 ,full of hope1 courage and     
zeal1 they give promise of usefulness4  
,the day of the corn-field and          
blacksmith preachers1 is past4 ,some of 

them were good men4 ,they have been     
exceedingly useful in holding the people
 together in church organizations and   
maintaining the forms of worship1 even

roll-call1 the narrative of the state of
 religion in the churches showed not any

,some of the churches are evidently     
becoming established1 while pastors1    
laboring amid all the trials incident to
 the common poverty1 the want of general
 culture1 and of experience in self     
government1 have occasion to walk by    
faith oftener than by sight4 ,to

licensure to preach4 ,with few          
exceptions1 their intelligent answers   
and general clearness of thought were   
creditable indeed4 ,these young men     
belong to different college classes4    
,they have taken instruction in theology
 with ,prof4 ,bennett1 at times crowded 
in between regular work in their        
classes4 ,with these was ,brother ,j4,d4
 ,pettigrew1 a former ,fisk student1 who
 returned recently from ,paris1 ,texas1 
to be ordained4 ,his examination was    
conducted with something of scrutiny1   
and it was apparent that a clear head1  

studious mind and consecrated heart     
afford reason to expect for him a useful

,church was received by letter into the

our gathering was the presence of the   
many bright and promising young people

listen4 ,he was ashamed2 he thought he  
could not stand it4 ,he was a ,christian
 young man1 and asked ,god to help him4 
,his progress has been a wonder4        
,to-day1 he stands at the head of his   
grade and conducts one of our           
out-station ,sunday-schools every       
,sabbath4 ,he has an excellent influence
 among his people1 seeing their needs1  
and his great desire is to carry the    
blessed news of the gospel among his own
 people4 ,the possibilities of our girls
 and boys ,god only knows4  ,during our 
vacation a number of our scholars went  
home4 ,one girl visited her home1 a     
distance of about fifteen miles4 ,her   
brother1 a rough mountain boy1 came for 
her with his wag4 ,she was a happy girl1
 for her love for her mother is great4  
,she did not return1 and we thought she 

had left us4 ,to-day she appeared1      
bounding in and crying for joy4 ',i just

girls is often very encouraging4 ,we

,central ,railroad1 is one of the       
chartered schools of the ,american      
,missionary ,association4 ,its          
enrollment is now over four hundred1    
with seventeen teachers4 ,accessible    
from all parts of ,mississippi and      
adjacent ,states1 no school of the      
,american ,missionary ,association is   
better located for effective work among 
the ,negroes4 ,in the four nearest      
counties1 the colored population which  
was1 in #ahhj1 a little over #hg1jjj1 is

 now probably more than #ajj1jjj1 none  
of it more than thirty-five miles from  
,tougaloo4 ,within a radius of          
seventy-five miles there are not far    
from #dej1jjj ,negroes4 ,by the last    
census1 ,mississippi's colored

estimate of the present number is

 this population is illiterate4         
,tougaloo is thus in the very midst of  
,america's ,africa4 ,just at hand1 also1
 is the ,yazoo-,mississippi ,delta1 into
 which ,negroes are pouring from other  
,states4 ,here they are gaining homes   
and establishing communities4 ,their    
numbers are expected continually to     
increase4 ,it will probably be as       
prosperous and influential a ,negro     
section as any in the land4 ,tougaloo is
 the nearest school of high grade to    
this ,delta region4 ,from lower         
,arkansas1 central and upper ,louisiana1
 ,tougaloo is drawing increasing numbers
 of pupils each year4 ,with such a      

location the only limit to the growth of
 ,tougaloo in numbers and influence will
 be that set by the means which         
,christian beneficence provides for its 
support4 ,tougaloo aims to give a       
thoroughly practical education to       
colored youth of both sexes4 ,a colored 
minister well expressed it when he said3
 ,it is the aim of the teachers of      
,tougaloo to enable the ,negro to have  
the grace of ,god in his heart1

easier than a buggy1 so ,i made a sled4 
,i had counted on the road being broken1
 as fifty wagons had gone over it only a
 day or two before4 ,here was my first  
difficulty4 ,only a few hours before ,i 
started a heavy wind arose and filled up
 every track4 ,so for every step of the 
thirty miles ,i had to break a new road4

 ,most of the way it was knee deep1 and 
in some places it was entirely          
impassable and it was necessary to go   
half a mile or even a mile to cross a   
ravine forty feet wide4 ,in one place   
where the road seemed plain1 the snow   
was particularly deep4 ,the crust was   
just thick enough to hold a horse until 
he began to pull4 ,then down he would   
go4 ,finally one horse could not reach  
the ground and rolled over on his side1 
and left me not yet halfway up the hill4
 ,i unhitched the horses1 tramped the   
snow down so they could stand1 drove    
them out and around perhaps forty rods1 
and then took in the situation4 ,there  
was the sled half way up the hill4 ,to  
pull it up was impossible2 to turn it   
round the same1 to back it down by hand 
the same4 ,the only thing left was to   
haul it down4 ,here is where a picket   
line is the best kind of a missionary4  
,it will often help a man out of a hard 
place1 or unto a hard place1 as in this 
case4 ,making a turn of a rope around   

the sled and hitching the team on forty 
feet down the hill we were soon on solid

by his life is denying what nine out of 
every ten men in the ,united ,states are
 saying3 ,it is no use to work among the
 adult ,indians4 ,he was twenty-five and
 over before he commenced study of any  
kind4 ,he is now a citizen1 ,republican1
 ,prohibitionist1 church officer1       
teacher1 preacher1 all of which require 
a fair amount of intelligence and       
information4  ,his work1 too1 is        
invaluable if the aim is to change the  
,indian to an ,american citizen4 ,in    
this village this one room only is the  
opening to civilization4 ,some of the   
young men are tired of ,indian ways4    
,they think the dance is something that 
ought to be thrown away4 ,these young   
men now have a place to spend their     
evenings1 beyond the dance house4 ,these
 houses and native helpers break down   
more superstition and ,indian life than 
any other influence on the reservation4 
,in the matter of dress it is the same4 

,here is an ,indian woman who is not    
ashamed to wear a dress like a white    
woman4 ,the teachers in the day schools 
complain that they cannot get the girls 
to wear the civilized dress when they   
leave school4 ,and ,indian dresses mean 
,indian dirt and carelessness4 ,one     
,indian woman advocating dress reform by
 example1 will do more than any teacher 
on the reservation4  ,from ,black ,pipe 
,i go to ,park ,street ,church ,station4
 ,here ,i have a road of twenty-five

of a four hour drive ,i have ten hours

rope ,i was on the road again and soon

visited a dozen of our sixteen missions

 confirmed in the admiration in which we
 have always held the administration of

 to that of a city church in ,san       
,francisco1 the ,bethany4 ,as he was    
upon his annual tour of inspection in   
,southern ,california1 ,i met him at    
,san ,diego1 the anniversary of whose   
mission at that time in the ,tabernacle 
of the ,first ,church ,i have already   
reported in the ,,missionary4 ,on that  
tour1 he held four or five              
anniversaries1 dedicating a new chapel  

at ,riverside1 setting in order the     
things that were wanting and doing the  
cognate work which only his practised   
eye saw needing to be done4 ,everywhere1
 confided in by the churches and looked 
up to affectionately by the ,chinese1   
his coming is always anticipated with   
pleasure4  ,i am delighted with the way 
in which our pastors and churches where 
these missions are located are taking   
them under their own watch-care4 ,it is 
not simply to entrust the work to the   
,california ,chinese ,mission and to the
 ,american ,missionary ,association to  
which it is an auxiliary1 but it is to  
take the ,chinese ,sunday-schools into  
their own ,sunday-school rooms1 to      
furnish teachers for the same1 along    
with the lady missionaries and native   
helpers1 to receive the converted ones  
into church membership1 and to recognize
 the local work as their own4 ,these    
,christians seem to realize that        
whatever views may be held as to the    
political economy of exclusion1 the duty

 is clear as to the evangelization of   
these whom ,god has brought to their    
doors4 ,and this is not only for the    
sake of these1 but for the sake also of 
,china1 to which land so many of them   
are now returning4  ,i am satisfied with
 the soundness of the work accomplished 
by this process in ,christianizing these
 who had known the true ,god4 ,i heard  
one man denying all such result and     
appealing to ,dr4 ,pond4 ,his answer was
 that if it were not so1 the fault was  
in the character of the ,christ himself1
 so profoundly persuaded was he that    
some of these had taken on his spirit   
and character4 ,one of the most         
intellectual of these men was one whom  
,dr4 ,pond characterized to me as a     
saintly person4 ,the number of seven    
hundred and fifty hopefully transferred 
from ,confucius to ,christ in these     
missions1 is a most gratifying result4  
,the work of the ,baptists1 the         
,presbyterians and the ,methodists1 is  
also of the same encouragement4  ,i am  

profoundly grateful to ,god for the     
women who have addicted themselves to   
this most self-denying of work for the  
,master's sake4 ,as always in such      
cases1 they are most happy in their     
work4 ,they see such progress1 such     
result in character1 that they rejoice  
in their privilege of service4 ,one of  
these pastors declared to me that for a 
long time he had counted these women as 
his evidences of ,christianity4  ,the   
missionary zeal of these young brethren 
is most gratifying4 ,besides the        
furnishing of #hfj toward the mission of
 the ,american ,board at ,hong ,kong1   
under ,rev4 ,mr4 ,hagar1 they have      
started their own missionary society    
here to operate in a self-supporting way
 in ,china under the advice and

 three over there to direct the same4
