tumble-down cabin of a colored man1 himself1 wife and boy carrying from it their few belongings to the favored land of promise4 ,the next picture shows him and his family in the woods in his new location1 getting ready to build his house4 ,the third picture represents a fine log house1 with green fields well fenced1 a mule and pigs and chickens in the yard2 and the last picture presents a large frame house with a veranda1 in which the colored man is seated in a large arm-chair1 reading a magazine1 and his wife sitting by his side in a rocking chair1 while near at hand is the capacious barn1 with mules grazing in the adjacent lot4 ,by the side of each picture is a running comment1 supposed to be made by the colored man himself1 describing his hard lot 'where he first lived1 then telling of his purchase in the new land of promise1 stating the price and the terms of purchase2 then follows his happy rejoicing over his new location1 and finally his triumphant joy in his wealth and fine mansion4 ,it is by such representations1 we are told1 that the colored people in various parts of the ,south are tempted to leave their homes for new locations4 ,the experience of those of their number who have made such migrations has not usually been encouraging1 and we fear that thousands more will acquire a good deal of bitter knowledge learned in that same expensive school4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,comparison4 ,the ,french and the ,negro4 ,a writer in the ,march number of ,the ,forum has drawn a vivid picture of ,france in its poverty1 misery and tyranny in #aghi1 and contrasted with this the thrift1 the improved land culture1 and the better clothing1 food1 home and intelligence of the ,french peasantry of #ahhi4 ,the ,revolution of #aghi broke the tyranny of the old crushing regime and opened the way for the new world that brightens and gladdens the ,france of to-day4 ,but the ,revolution did not itself make the great change2 it simply made it possible4 ,two factors developed in ,french character were the practical forces in the new prosperity--economy and the desire for ownership of lands and homes4 ,that economy was pushed1 in many cases1 almost to the extreme of miserly hoarding4 ,we give below a few brief extracts illustrating the point in question3 ,the life led by a comfortable ,english or ,american farmer would represent wicked waste and shameful indulgence to a much richer ,french peasant4 ,i1 myself1 know a laborer on wages of less than twenty shillings a week1 who by thrift has bought ten acres of the magnificent garden land between ,fontainebleau and the ,seine1 worth many thousand pounds1 on which grow all kinds of fruits and vegetables1 and the famous dessert grapes2 yet who1 with all his wealth and abundance1 denies himself and his two children meat on ,sundays1 and even a drink of the wine which he grows and makes for the market4 ,the ,french peasant has great virtues1 but he has the defects of his virtues1 and his home life is far from idyllic4 ,he is laborious1 shrewd1 enduring1 frugal1 self-reliant1 sober1 honest and capable of intense self-control for a distant reward2 but that reward is property in land1 in pursuit of which he may become as pitiless as a bloodhound4 ,take him for all in all1 he is a strong and noteworthy force in modern civilization4 ,though his country has not the vast mineral wealth of ,england1 nor her gigantic development in manufactures and in commerce1 he has made ,france one of the richest1 most solid1 most progressive countries on earth4 ,he is quite as frugal and patient as the ,german1 and is far more ingenious and skillful4 ,he has not the energy of the ,englishman1 or the elastic spring of the ,american1 but he is far more saving and much more provident4 ,he 'wastes nothing1 and spends little1' and thus1 since his country comes next to ,england and ,america in natural resources and national energy1 he has built up one of the strongest1 most self-contained and most durable of modern peoples4 ,a very significant parallel is presented in these two pictures to one that may be drawn between the ,negro of #ahfa and the ,negro of #aifa4 ,the ,civil ,war corresponded to the ,revolution in ,france4 ,it broke the fetters of the slave1 and made his future a possibility4 ,if1 now1 the ,negro will fill out the beautiful picture in imitation of the ,french peasant1 he must imitate him in rigid economy and in the ambition to own his own land and his own home4 ,we do not of course advise the penuriousness of the miser1 but the ,negro is in little danger on that score4 ,the grandest impulse1 even in economy and in obtaining property1 is found in a genuine ,christian character4 ,this is the work that our ministers and teachers are endeavoring to accomplish1 but we are sure ,it will aid them to urge this practical saving of money1 curtailing of needless expense1 and the making of most determined efforts to become owners of their own homes4 99 richer4 ,but not everybody on this day was discussing ,abdallah and ,hambletonian4 ,long before the appointed hour1 a stream of people began moving to a part of the city where two pikes intersect1 the point of attraction being a fine three-story red brick structure known as the ,chandler ,normal ,institute4 ,this building occupies a commanding position on a hill which overlooks the city4 ,it was erected and furnished by the liberality of one esteemed lady1 ,mrs4 ,phoebe ,chandler1 of ,andover1 ,massachusetts1 at an outlay of some fifteen thousand dollars1 and is given to the cause of understanding of the importance of ,christian education as the solution of ,national problems1 both ,north and ,south1 closing with a formal ,god-speed to this institution as it started forth on its noble career4 ,to this address1 ,rev4 ,mr4 ,tate1 of the ,african ,methodist ,episcopal ,church1 made a scholarly1 eloquent and touching response4 ,he reviewed the work of the ,association for his people1 eulogized the friend who had made this special benefaction1 and urged upon his hearers to make the most1 under ,god1 of the high privileges thus brought to them from afar4 ,informal addresses from both white and colored visitors followed4 ,the eloquent periods of ,dr4 ,l4,p4 ,todd1 dwelling fully upon the brotherhood of man1 the witty and practical remarks of ,prof4 ,john ,schackleford1 of ,kentucky ,state ,college1 and the wise and cogent exhortations of ,rev4 ,w4 ,s4 ,fulton1 ,d4,d41 cannot be reported2 suffice it to say1 that they gave a spiritual uplift and fine dignity to the occasion4 ,these noble men are staunch supporters of our work1 and freely give to our corps of teachers the benefits of fatherly and fraternal fellowship4 ,a resolution expressing the gratitude of the colored people for this generous gift was adopted with enthusiasm1 and the inspiring exercises came to a close with the praises of ,god in the well-known words of ,bishop ,ken3 ,praise ,god1 from whom all blessings flow4 ,the event marks the beginning of an epoch in our work in this place4 ,one dark brother said3 ,it is the greatest day for the colored people of ,lexington since the emancipation4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,congregationalism ,,around ,,paris1 ,,texas4 ,,by ,,rev4 ,j4,d4 ,,pettigrew4 ,it gives me much pleasure to tell you what we are doing for the ,master and for ,congregationalism in this part of the great field4 ,i came to ,paris nearly eleven months ago and assumed the pastorate of the ,first ,congregational ,church4 ,i had been here but a short time when ,i found that there were three other ,congregational ,churches out in the country near ,paris1 and that there had once been a ,quarterly ,conference made up of these four churches2 but this ,conference had died out ere ,i came4 ,i thought that such an organization1 if revived1 would be a great stimulus to the churches1 and especially to those out in the country1 two of which were1 at that time1 without pastors4 ,so ,i sent out cards notifying the brethren that the ,conference would convene at a specified day1 and urging them to come in full representation4 ,a few1 very few1 responded4 ,we organized4 ,after transacting a little business the ,conference adjourned to meet at our next regularly appointed time4 ,before the time for our next meeting we were all made to rejoice by the coming of ,rev4 ,m4,r4 ,carlisle1 a graduate of both the collegiate and theological courses of ,talladega ,college1 from ,alabama1 to assume the pastoral charge of two of these churches--,dodd ,city and ,bois ,d',arc4 ,he and ,i drew up a plan to re-organize the old ,conference into a more excellent and practical one4 ,we offered our plan at the next meeting of the ,conference1 and it was cheerfully received4 ,the effect of this plan was to change the name from ,conference to ,association1 and to divide the ,association into three distinct departments1 each with its own set of officers1 as follows3 a ,sunday-school ,department1 composed of the different ,sunday-schools of the churches2 a ,missionary ,department1 composed of the different church missionary societies2 and a ,church ,department1 composed of the different churches4 ,each department had its own distinct programme and business2 but the combined programmes of all made up the general programme of the ,association4 ,this plan works excellently1 and serves as a wonderful stimulus to each of these departments of church work4 ,we have1 in our next meeting1 to add the department of ,christian ,endeavor4 ,our last session1 held with our church in ,paris on the #bhth of ,december1 #ahhi1 was indeed a grand success4 ,previous to its meeting1 ,i heard of four other ,congregational ,churches in the ,indian ,territory1 under the auspices of the ,american ,home ,missionary ,society4 ,i sent them an invitation to join the ,association4 ,these churches promptly sent delegates who connected their churches with the ,association4 ,one brother from the ,territory heard of the ,association1 but was not able to pay his way on the train to ,paris4 ,so1 as he said to me1 ,i left my wife and children in the care of ,god1 and ,i put myself into his hands and came2 and ,i walked every step of the way4 ,this brother walked forty miles to meet the ,association1 and his fidelity had a great effect upon the whole meeting4 ,we tried to make it pleasant for him1 and took up a special collection to send him back home on the train4 ,space will not allow me to speak touching the spiritual strength and interest of the meeting4 ,we had many valuable papers read and discussed1 and closed our session on the ,sabbath with the following programme3 ,sabbath morning from #i-aa o'clock1 ,sabbath-school2 #aa-ab3cj1 ,sermon1 more than three weeks4 ,about fifty have been hopefully brought to a saving knowledge of ,christ4 ,the church was never1 perhaps1 more deeply stirred than at this time4 ,there seems to be a thirsting for a deeper work of grace among ,christians1 a thorough coming out from the world4 ,it was a beautiful sight yesterday1 when before the altar twenty-nine new recruits took upon themselves the covenant of the church44 ,the most of the remaining converts will unite with us at our next communion4 ,a few of them will join elsewhere4 ,our church is getting well organized for work along all lines of ,christian activity4 ,the ,endeavor ,society among our young people1 now the largest in number in the district1 is a real power for good4 ,the ,sunday-school is taking on new life4 ,there is before us in this city an exceeding good land1 but before full possession1 many battles must be fought1 spiritual and financial4 ,but we have great reason to be thankful4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,white ,,cross ,,league4 ,,prof4 ,h4,h4 ,,wright1 ,,fisk ,,university4 ,i want to lay before you a short account of the work of the ,white ,cross ,league1 of this ,university1 as reported by the members at a meeting held at my house last ,sunday night4 ,you may not be aware that late last school year ,i called together a dozen or two of our best young men and induced them to take the ,white ,cross pledge--to treat all women with respect1 to refrain from indecent jests and coarse language1 to maintain that the law of personal purity is as binding on men as upon women1 etc4 ,at the meeting last ,sunday night one after another gave his experience touching the ,white ,cross movement4 ,one young man reported that through his persuasion1 public and private1 especially the latter1 three or four couples who had been living together unlawfully went before the proper authorities and were married4 ,another testified that he had personally felt the restraining influence of his pledge1 while he acted as waiter at a summer hotel4 ,the pledge had a great restraining influence upon him and was a safeguard4 ,another found it necessary to organize a ,wednesday night ,bible meeting of his own1 for the regular meetings of the churches did not give him the opportunity he desired4 ,all the young men testified to the good influence of the pledge upon their own lives1 but one young man's report of his work was of especial interest4 ,he is head waiter at the hotel at ,lake ----1 where about #bej servants1 men and women1 are employed4 ,he took a squad of seventy-eight colored men from the ,south to the ,lake at the opening of the season1 engaging them on condition that there was to be no gambling among them4 ,immediately on arriving he organized a ,y4,m4,c4,a4 among them1 and held meetings ,sunday afternoons and two evenings during the week through the summer1 all well attended4 ,at some of these meetings he spoke of the ,white ,cross movement1 and was successful in gaining the approbation of most of the members of the ,association4 ,the nature of the pledge and of the talks got out among the women servants1 and ere long at their invitation he assembled from seventy-five to one hundred of them and gave them a very earnest talk on the value and duty of virtuous lives4 ,many were affected to tears1 and all were seriously impressed4 ,after that they seemed to look to him as their protector1 and often said they were so glad they had a head man who would endeavor to shield them from temptation and wrong4 ,and the remarkable thing about it is1 that these women servants are white6 ,the proprietor of the hotel1 on closing the season1 told our student that if he had been told that such a work as he had accomplished among his help could be done he would have declared it impossible4 ,what is to be the outcome of this little movement so auspiciously begun8 ,it seems to me that if wisely carried on the possibilities for good are very great4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,berea ,,and ,,temperance4 ,for nearly twelve years there has been a temperance organization centering at ,berea4 ,by personal canvass it has secured signers to the total abstinence pledge1 until the aggregate number is between two thousand and three thousand4 ,the length of the district from north to south is not less than ten miles1 and the greatest breadth seven or eight miles4 ,the number of votes polled at a general election is about six hundred4 ,for nearly ten years the sale of intoxicating liquors within the district has been illegal1 it having been voted out by the people by a large majority soon after the great ,murphy movement4 ,just on the border of the district were two or three men1 distillers in a small way and venders of the fiery liquid1 who thought the enthusiasm of the ,murphy movement was past1 and took the necessary steps to have a poll opened on the liquor question1 at the ,august election of #ahhh4 ,but they had underrated the effect of these years of temperance education4 ,nearly all our students become signers of the pledge and workers in whatever field they may visit2 and the people of the country immediately around us have been profiting by the teachings of these meetings4 ,when the question was clearly presented1 ,shall we again have the legalized liquor traffic among us8 the activity of the friends of sobriety and order was as great as that of the selfish advocates of license4 ,meetings were held in every neighborhood4 ,on election day1 seventy-five ladies1 of the noblest in the district1 were at the voting place4 ,refreshments were furnished in abundance and free of charge4 ,doubtful voters were met with argument and persuasion4 ,all was as orderly as if it were a religious meeting4 ,the result showed #dce for temperance to #aca for the faith he had come to have1 and asking her again and again to have no idols1 but to worship and believe in ,god alone4 ,she is now an earnest seeker after light1 is visited on ,sunday by a leading man who lives near her1 and who is asked to tell them on the ,sabbath of the religion and the ,god of whom her husband had told her4 ,a father1 a hearer1 but yet a heathen1 says3 ,i want to put the at our meeting in ,chicago by the appearance and speech of an ,indian woman from our ,oahe ,station1 ,elizabeth ,winyan4 ,we have now to communicate the sad tidings of her death1 after a brief1 but severe illness4 ,her life was an eventful and a useful one4 ,elizabeth was the name given her by the missionaries4 ,winyan was her ,indian name4 ,she was born near ,mankato1 ,minnesota1 in #ahca4 ,at the age of twenty-five she became one of the early converts under ,drs4 ,williamson and ,riggs4 ,she came to live at the mission1 and learned to sew and do all household work4 ,dr4 ,williamson set her to teaching some women1 and so began her missionary labor4 ,she was a woman of great physical strength4 ,when she was living at the ,sisseton ,agency1 she cut with her own hands and hauled to the ,agency1 driving the ox-team herself1 wood enough to pay for putting her little house in good repair and to buy some farming implements4 ,she was a faithful friend4 ,this fidelity she proved during the ,indian uprising in #ahfb4 ,when the mission families were fleeing from their burning houses at midnight1 they forgot to take any food along4 ,while they were hiding on an island in the ,minnesota ,river1 she1 at the risk of her own life1 carried to them bread and meat4 ,in #ahge1 she and ,miss ,collins went to assist ,rev4 ,t4,l4 ,riggs in starting the ,oahe ,mission1 near ,fort ,sully1 on the prayer4 ,she tells a story of how ,edwin1 as a child1 wanted to wear civilized clothes4 ,she made him a shirt and trousers1 and then he needed a hat and shoes4 ,she said1 ,i told him to pray for them2 in the meantime ,i worked as well as prayed1 and on ,saturday1 when my work was done1 the missionary's wife gave me a hat and a pair of shoes for ,edwin4 ,he was delighted and so was ,i4 ,since that time he has never doubted that ,god would answer prayer4 ,she said3 ,i taught ,edwin to give to the ,lord from a baby4 ,when he was not old enough to know his duty1 ,i put the penny in his hand and held his hand over the basket1 and dropped in the penny4 ,sometimes ,i would only be able to get one penny1 and that ,i would give to ,edwin to put in the collection1 for ,i wanted him to form a habit of giving2 ,i knew ,i ought to give1 and ,god knows ,i would when ,i had a penny1 but my son must be taught4 ,this son has grown up a good ,christian1 speaks ,english1 is a teacher1 and is now a ,christian ceremonies4 ,in the forenoon1 ,i was with the ,congregational brethren at their rooms in ,chinatown4 ,their schoolroom was decorated with all the colors and characters of the native land4 ,a table was spread with fruits and nuts and candies and cakes and flowers4 ,the ,chinese lily was the appropriate ,new ,year's adornment4 ,the services were prayer1 much singing of ,moody and ,sankey songs1 recitations of ,scripture and addresses by their own men and by visitors4 ,the room was filled with sympathetic touring friends4 ,after the public service1 the goodies of the table were passed around4 ,in the afternoon1 ,i went to the ,presbyterian1 and my wife to the ,united ,presbyterian1 service1 which was much after the same sort4 ,in the former1 the ,rev4 ,mr4 ,condit and his wife1 who had long ago returned from ,china to engage in this work1 were the leaders4 ,after the ,superintendent of the ,methodist ,chinese ,sunday-school had spoken1 a brother in the mission1 following1 called him a good ,presbyterian4 ,although these foreigners fall into the church order of the people who have led them into the ,jesus way1 they recognize these divisions as simply so many families akin1 and so there is a constant visiting and affiliation among them as ,christians4 ,the whole occasion was one to inspire faith in the ,gospel as suited to the needs of our common humanity1 and faith in the beneficent results upon those who have not known of the true ,god and ,saviour4 ,on the afternoon of the following ,sunday1 in ,dr4 ,hutchins' church1 ,i visited the ,congregational ,chinese ,sunday-school1 superintended by a lawyer and taught by members of that parish4 ,mr4 ,dorland1 the ,superintendent1 is giving himself to this work with great enthusiasm1 and his associates share in the same4 ,the thing which delighted me in ,dr4 ,hutchins' church1 and in all this round of our ,chinese ,missions1 was the fact that the local church is taking these ,chinese of the ,a4,m4,a4 schools into their fellowship1 not only that of the ,sunday-school but of church membership4 ,whatever views may be held as to the political economy of exclusion1 these ,christians seem to realize that ,god has brought these pagans to their doors to be cared for in ,christ's name4 ,mrs4 ,sheldon and her daughter1 the missionaries of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 teaching the night-school1 serving in the ,sunday-school1 and by every feasible ministry1 are confirming the judgment of one of our pastors that these lady missionaries are their ,evidences of ,christianity4 ,the other anniversary was that of our mission at ,san ,diego--,miss ,m4,m4 ,elliot1 the missionary teacher1 and ,chin ,toy1 the helper4 ,rev4 ,w4 ,c4 ,pond1 ,d4,d41 of ,san ,francisco1 the ,superintendent of our ,chinese work1 which he takes in addition to the pastoral care of the ,bethany ,church1 had come down for his annual visitation of the missions in ,southern ,california4 ,in the ,mission ,chapel1 at the time of the night-school1 ,dr4 ,pond conducts the rehearsal and1 on ,sunday night1 in the ,tabernacle of the ,first ,congregational ,church1 presides at the public service4 ,the great assembly room is packed with interested listeners who soon become delighted4 ,after opening devotions1 conducted by the pastor1 ,rev4 ,mr4 ,voorhees1 and his choir1 the young brethren proceed with a prayer in the ,chinese1 then with the ,lord's ,prayer in concert1 both in ,english and in ,chinese4 ,then come songs in solo and in concert1 from the ,moody and ,sankey book1 and recitations of ,scripture passages4 ,dare to be a ,daniel1 was rendered in solo with fine effect as to the music1 and especially as to the idea of daring to become ,christians in the face of the derision of their pagan friends4 ,the ,ten ,commandments1 as recited by one1 and each responded to in music by the school in the words of the prayer-book1 were deeply impressive4 ,and so was the ,missionary ,exercise1 with baptized in his church1 was locked into his apartment of the shoeshop by some of his pagan friends1 who thought that after the passing of the baptismal occasion of ,sunday morning he would get over his desire to be a ,jesus man4 ,so1 ,sunday afternoon1 he was released4 ,but at night he appeared at the ,bethany and was baptized into ,christ4 ,he is now with ,loo ,quong1 an ,a4,m4,a4 evangelist1 and at present is serving as helper at the ,san ,diego mission4 ,his address was a logical and eloquent setting forth of the difficulties in the way of the ,chinese becoming ,christians2 and1 at the end1 it was an appeal to ,american ,christians to improve their opportunity to become missionaries to the heathen whom ,god had brought to their door4 ,short addresses were then made by ,rev4 ,f4,b4 ,perkins1 of the ,second ,church1 and by ,district ,secretary ,roy--the former declaring that that meeting alone was enough to repay all effort in that line2 enough to remove all prejudice4 ,indeed1 only this week1 a former pastor of that church1 ,rev4 ,j4,b4 ,silcox1 now of the ,east ,oakland ,church1 told me that a similar anniversary held in that same ,tabernacle a year ago1 had melted down all prejudice4 ,indeed1 it is now1 as in the days of the primitive ,christians3 wheresoever it is seen that people of the despised classes have received the ,holy ,ghost1 that is the end of caste a little colored girl4 ,she was her father's first child1 and he was justly proud of her1 and calculated that there must be some fitting name for her somewhere1 and that he must get it out of a book4 ,he could not read1 but he could spell a little1 and therefore he got him a copy of ,webster's blue-backed speller1 and spelled the book half way through until he found the word heterogeneous2 therefore that little girl was christened ,heterogeneous4 ,this morning this programme was handed to me1 and ,i saw on it ,chinese1 ,indian1 ,negro1 ,white2 and ,i couldn't help thinking of ,heterogeneous4 ,as ,i looked over the subjects1 and thought that ,i would have to speak about something1 ,i thought that ,chinese1 ,indian1 ,white man and ,negro1 was quite a subject for a speech4 ,but ,i was inclined to be fair1 like a certain minister1 who was always preaching on infant baptism4 ,he preached on infant baptism1 no matter what the text was4 ,the deacons and the people of the church got tired of it1 and they concluded to give him some text that would relate to facts1 before there were any infants4 ,so they turned to the ,book of ,genesis1 and found the text ,adam1 where art thou8 ,and when the minister came to the pulpit ,sunday morning1 the deacons gave this text to him and told him1 ,here is a text we want you to preach upon4 ,he demurred a little and wondered why they had not given him more time1 but finally concluded to preach on this text4 ,he got up and said3 ,there are three points in this text3 ,first1 that men are always somewhere2 second1 that they are very often where they ought not to be2 third1 the text is dead set against infant baptism2 and as the time is short1 ,i will speak on point third4 ,now1 ,i said to myself that either of these themes was a worthy one2 but as ,chinese comes first1 ,indian second1 and ,negro third1 and1 as the time is brief1 ,i will speak on point third4 ,not long ago ,i saw in an illustrated paper ,president ,harrison with his ,cabinet1 represented as all lolling over asleep2 and in the group there stood a ,negro1 his mouth open1 his collar open1 his teeth showing1 and with a large scroll in his hand4 ,beneath this picture was this remark3 ,wake up to the question of the day1 and on that scroll which the ,negro had in his hand were the words3 ,what are you gwine to do with the black man8 ,now1 that question has been asked here indirectly to-day3 and1 my friends1 do you know that sometimes1 as we have heard this question discussed1 we wonder just exactly how people do consider us in this country4 ,there have been some who have advocated colonization4 ,some have said that we would have to be sent back to ,africa or out ,west1 or to ,south ,america4 ,one man thinks that extermination will be the final thing to be resorted to4 ,it may be a fault in my education1 it may be that this ,american ,missionary ,association has not educated me all right--for ,i am a product of the ,association1--but ,i have been taught to suppose that we ,negroes were free1 independent1 ,american citizens1 at liberty to choose where we will stay and how long we will stay4 ,it seems that very eminent men are discussing the feasibility of sending us to ,africa1 and whether it is wise to go to the expense if it is thought best to send us there4 ,now1 my friends1 it does not seem to me that there is any question about it so far as we are concerned4 ,the whites may go if they want to1 but we are not going to budge6 ,so long as this is a free country we are going to stay here2 it satisfies us4 ,it seems to me ,god has so settled it4 ,the question is not1 what are you going to do with the colored man1 but what are you going to do for him8 ,a great deal has been done1 and it has been said that more has been done for the ,negroes than for any other people4 ,that is true3 and the ,negro has done more in these last twenty-five years than any other people on whom money and time and labor has been expended4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association found out long ago what the ,negro problem was4 ,they established schools and sent teachers among us1 and when they came to us1 they came at once1 assuming--not as ,senator ,eustis has done1 that the ,negroes have an inherent sense of inferiority1 and that they should take an assigned place2 not as ,governor ,lee has insisted1 that the all-important thing for the white man to do is to keep the ,negro down2 and not as ,senator ,gibbs of ,georgia1 who a few weeks ago insisted that the white people are in imminent peril1 and even went so far as to bring a bill before the ,legislature as to whether the ,negroes should be driven out of that ,state4 ,that is not the way these teachers have come down to us4 ,they have assumed that we are as capable as other people1 that we have the same needs2 and because they have come to us with this assumption to begin with1 because they have received us in this way1 we have made the progress that we have4 ,now1 of all things that are most needed to be done for us1 we need a good theological seminary in the ,south1 where the ministry can be educated among us4 ,it is only an elevated ,christian citizenship that will save us1 and make us what other people are2 and we must have a theological seminary to aid us toward that end4 ,you have given us colleges1 normal schools1 industrial training schools1 and schools of common branches1 and we have now young men and young women filling all the schools through the ,south4 ,we can get good teachers for our schools in the remotest places1 in ,arkansas1 ,texas and ,mississippi1 or anywhere else4 ,so it is not a question as to what kind of teachers we will have4 ,but the churches have not in their pulpits ministers well prepared to preach the gospel of ,christ4 ,they have not kept up with the young people in the work done by the schools4 ,in the ,north1 one of the pleasant things we find wherever we go1 is that in all your churches there is something for the young people to do4 ,you have ,christian ,endeavor ,societies1 and various organizations by which the young people may be reached4 ,therefore1 you gather them in from the beginning and have them trained so that they can take your places as soon as you are ready to step out of the work4 ,it is not so with our churches4 ,our ministers have not advanced to that degree where they can take up such work4 ,in these little ,congregational churches that have been planted1 we have educated ministers1 who are able thus to work1 especially among young people4 ,we do not have people at our hand as other churches have1 but we are trying to get hold of them4 ,in ,fisk ,university there were last year1 ,i believe1 #eaj students1 of whom1 perhaps1 there were #ajj ,congregationalists4 ,so1 after all1 it is ,methodists and ,baptists that you are educating there4 ,this is all right1 because the great masses of the people are found in those churches4 ,if we had a ,congregational ,theological ,school we could reach these people just as well through the pulpit as we reach them in the schools4 ,i was asked to give a little of my personal experience4 ,i dislike to do this3 but if narrating any of my personal experience will give an insight into the work that the ,american ,missionary ,association is doing1 ,i will gladly consent4 ,my story is the story of hundreds of young men in the ,south4 ,only in the larger cities can we get a good ,english education1 except we go to schools established for us by this ,association4 ,i went eight years to ,fisk ,university4 ,i have a brother there now in the senior college class4 ,this is his tenth year1 and ,i have a sister who is also in her tenth year there4 ,it takes a long while to get through4 ,my father had no money to send me to school4 ,in his slavery days he had stolen a little bit of learning1 and had learned how to write and read and a little arithmetic4 ,i was about four years old when the stroke for freedom was made4 ,my father began to teach me arithmetic1 and many a day in his shoemaker's shop1 as ,i sat and kept the fire going1 he would teach me and carry me as far as he could2 and he put into me the idea of getting an education4 ,at fifteen he told me ,i might have my own time4 ,at that age ,i had advanced far enough to pass the examination of the district school1 and1 having passed1 ,i made my way to ,fisk ,university4 ,i had not known that there was such an institution in the land1 or such a thing as the ,missionary ,association2 but going once into an adjoining county1 ,i happened to fall in with some ,christian young men from ,fisk1 and they told me about that school4 ,i had always had a great desire to be educated1 and so ,i went down there4 ,when ,i arrived there1 ,i thought it was a strange place4 ,i was familiar with white people1 but ,i think ,i had never up to that time had one of them shake hands with me4 ,when ,i found what they were doing there1 and that it was an earnest ,christian school1 my whole soul was uplifted1 and ,i determined to seek for better things4 ,i thought ,i was pretty well educated1 but when ,i found myself down stairs among those learning grammar and arithmetic1 and that there were nine years before me1 ,i concluded that after all ,i was not very well educated1 but ,i set out to go through that long course of study4 ,during all those years of study ,i taught school every summer4 ,for nine years ,i was not out of the school room a month in the year4 ,i was either a pupil or a teacher4 ,wherever ,i was teaching1 ,i would try to set up a little ,fisk ,university of my own4 ,you know that the school teacher who goes out into these country places is everybody and everything4 ,he is law and gospel1 and he must know everything--at least1 he must not let people know that he does not know everything4 ,so ,i was not only school teacher1 but ,i organized a ,sunday-school1 and preached1 also4 ,especially in ,mississippi ,i did that kind of work1 where there was much need of it4 ,this is the way that hundreds of young men have gone through ,fisk ,university and other institutions4 ,we get our education sometimes at great cost1 and at great hardships4 ,sometimes we break down under this constant strain of teaching4 ,many a time in ,mississippi swamps ,i have waded up to my knees in water going to school1 and many a time have ,i taught lying sick on my back2 but the money had to be made4 ,this is the way we get through1 and not only the young men but the girls4 ,there are two things which it teaches us3 ,it teaches us how to be men1 and it teaches us how to work4 ,we are forced to do it for the money's sake1 and it is not only for the money's sake1 because we are sure that these young men and young ladies go out with a ,christian desire to do good1 and a young man1 whether he is a ,christian or not1 feels that he must do ,christian work when he is teaching in the summer4 ,he is hardly respectable if he does not do that sort of thing during his service as a teacher4 ,in that way the great masses of the people are being reached by ,christian students going out among them4 ,so it seems to me as though the problem were being slowly yet truly solved1 and by and by the ,negroes will be lifted up on the same footing with other people4 ,that is the only thing we want4 ,we are not fighting for social equality1 or this or that thing4 ,no intelligent ,negro has any desire to put the ,south into the hands of the ,negroes for rule4 ,no man who is intelligent could wish the government of the ,south to come into the hands of any ignorant and inexperienced people1 whether white or black1 and that is what we are as a mass4 ,but we do want recognition1 so far as we have those qualities that would cause the same thing to be granted to us if we were not ,negroes4 ,this is the only thing that we ask for1 and this is what is withheld from us4 ,there are those even in the ,south who are willing to give us this recognition1 and little by little they are getting over some of their prejudice and are inclined to recognize us so far as we have a right to their respect4 ,of course there are those who are determined to keep the ,negro down2 but these are coming over slowly but surely1 and by and by there will be in this land no ,negro problem4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,bureau ,,of ,iowa1 which is rendering us so substantial aid in the support of our ,beach ,institute at ,savannah1 ,georgia4 ,and here comes yet another pledge--the ,union of ,kansas starting in with three hundred
