among the tribes of the plains4 ,these men and women in our churches and schools who have given themselves in consecration and sacrifice to this service are leading those who have been crushed by oppressions and wrongs of men1 and who have been degraded in ignorance and in sin1 to rise into a new life1 and into new habits of thought and feeling4 ,they are working to rescue millions from the woful inheritances of the pitiless centuries4 ,they are teaching those who are to be the teachers of their people4 ,they are preparing those who shall lead their own peoples4 ,it is not a work of a being at some discount1 ,i undertook to tell him that ,jefferson ,davis did more than any other person to take the ,south out of the ,union4 ,he was chief among the secessionists4 ,then1 as ,president1 he made so many mistakes1 he did more than any other man to prevent the success of the ,confederacy4 ,he did more to bring about the freedom of the slave than any other man4 ,since the emancipation of your race came on as a consequence of secession1 why should you not be grateful to ,jefferson ,davis and cherish his memory8 ,the black man by this time had gathered himself up for his ventured to talk with this colored porter4 ,i asked him what he knew about his race1 and what he thought of his people and their prospects4 ,he said1 ,i was raised in ,north ,carolina1 never had much chance myself1 had only a country school to go to--kept by a colored man--not very good teacher--pretty good--better than none4 ,but there's good many good schools now1 and good many smart colored papers1 while the blending of the foreigners here is steadily and rapidly going forward1 rendering them speedily one people4 ,on the other hand1 the colored population in the ,southern ,states is steadily augmenting1 while the alienation between the black and white races in the ,south is becoming more pronounced4 ,the ,southern problem is the more difficult of solution4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a clergyman in a ,southern town who is connected with families of great influence1 and who ministers to a large white church1 is accustomed to preach every afternoon in a colored church under the care of this ,association4 ,he usually repeats to the colored church the sermon preached in the forenoon to his own people1 and finds that those who hear it in the afternoon appreciate it fully4 ,the two remarkable facts in this incident are that the gentleman should consent to do this gratuitous labor for the colored church1 and that the colored church should understand and appreciate the sermon prepared for the cultured white congregation4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,beautiful ,,gift4 ,mr4 ,silas ,m4 ,rideout1 of ,cumberland1 ,maine1 has presented to the ,american ,missionary ,association1 through the ,boston office1 a most beautiful box for keepsakes4 ,it is about #f inches in width1 #i in length and #d in depth1 made of inlaid woods of different colors very tastefully arranged1 ,american ,missionary being set in the cover4 ,the inside is lined with plush4 ,on a card in the box the following was written by a friend3 ,this box was presented to the ,american ,missionary ,association by a good man living in a small town in ,maine1 who1 like that good fisherman of whom we have heard1 gives such as he had4 ,this dear brother of four-score and two years1 made this box and presented it to the ,american ,missionary ,association1 with its contents #aj4be1 which was contributed by such of his friends as desired to have a look at the skill of their aged brother in his work of love for the cause of ,christ4 ,it was intended by our venerable friend that this box should draw other contributions and finally be sold1 the proceeds to be devoted to the work of the ,american ,missionary ,association in which ,mr4 ,rideout has been so deeply interested for many years4 ,a gentleman in ,boston offers #ab for the box4 ,will not some one make a better offer1 and in this way recognize the remarkable skill of this aged friend in his effort to increase the income of the ,association to help the needy millions among whom our missionaries labor8 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,southern ,,situation4 ,,some ,,suggestive ,,facts4 ,first ,fact4 ,the condition of the colored man ,in the ,south is becoming more pitiable and precarious4 ,mr4 ,grady1 in his last speech1 announced the unalterable purpose of the ,southern whites never to submit to ,negro rule1 and we read not long since of a quiet election held in a ,southern city1 because the colored people1 duly warned1 kept away from the polls4 ,we know something1 also1 of the struggles of that people against almost insuperable difficulties in trying to obtain food1 homes and education4 ,in addition to all this1 the public press keeps us informed with sad frequency of the repeated murders inflicted upon the defenceless colored people4 ,second ,fact4 ,we learn with gratification that ,southern people of high standing denounce these outrages4 ,governor ,richardson1 of ,south ,carolina1 assured a colored delegation that called upon him1 that he had offered a reward for the apprehension of the ,barnwell murderers1 and pledged his sacred word that nothing would be undone on his part to bring the lynchers to condign punishment4 ,senator ,wade ,hampton is said to have endorsed the sentiments of the ,governor1 and leading ,southern papers have censured in unmeasured terms this outrage4 ,but as yet these murderers have not been arrested1 and we presume that no one expects they will be4 ,the murderers of ,mr4 ,clayton1 of ,arkansas1 who presumed to run as an independent candidate for ,congress1 were denounced by the authorities of the ,state1 and rewards were offered for their apprehension4 ,but1 though many months have elapsed1 they have not been arrested1 and no one1 ,north or ,south1 imagines that they will be punished4 ,kind words from ,southern officials will not solve the great problem4 ,third ,fact4 ,the colored people bear up well under all these trying circumstances4 ,we should suppose they would be utterly discouraged1 for they see little prospect of securing their rights as men and citizens1 and even life and property are not safe4 ,they are allured to a change of location by flaming handbills1 making tempting but deceptive offers of better wages and better homes4 ,they are hunted down and massacred1 and yet their wrongs are unredressed4 ,but in spite of all this1 they struggle on1 constantly gaining property and homes1 some of them acquiring wealth4 ,if they are deceived on reaching some new ,eldorado1 losing their all in making the change1 they do not give up1 but strike in again4 ,if they are not safe in some rural districts1 they go to the cities4 ,but best of all1 their educated men are showing great wisdom and moderation1 as witness the calm and dispassionate action of the ,convention of the most intelligent and influential colored men in ,charleston1 ,s4,c41 after the ,barnwell massacre4 ,they passed resolutions of dignified condemnation of the wrong1 yet urged their people to remain quiet1 and let the proper authorities vindicate the law4 ,the forbearance of that meeting has won the commendations of leading white men in the ,south4 ,and here let us say1 that the white people of the ,south make no greater mistake1 than when they imagine that it is a dangerous thing to educate the colored people4 ,on the contrary1 we believe that the facts make it manifest that it is by these educated men that their race will be guided wisely and safely through this great crisis1 and that if a war of races is to be avoided1 these educated colored men will be a grand factor in averting it4 ,fourth ,fact4 ,it is conceded by all right-thinking people1 that the education of the colored race is the only true solution of the ,southern problem4 ,this has been declared in ,presidential messages1 in the utterances of such candid men as ,dr4 ,curry1 ,dr4 ,haygood and ,colonel ,keating1 by writers in all the ,northern religious papers1 and is1 we believe1 the accepted and settled opinion of ,christian people at the ,north4 ,everybody admits1 also1 that there is a crisis coming1 and that what is done for ,negro education must be done quickly4 ,the ,north has a duty in this matter1 and admits it4 ,our constituents have a special duty in the case1 and they feel it4 ,they have done nobly in the past1 and have assumed great responsibilities which cannot now be neglected or deferred4 ,but here is the strangest of all the facts in this series3 ,with the urgency before them1 our constituents do not make a corresponding increase in their donations4 ,we feel impelled to urge this upon the attention of pastors1 churches and individuals4 ,brethren and friends1 do not delay as in the case of slavery1 till the conflict comes6 ,do not expect that everybody else is doing what is needed4 ,the responsibility is personal and pressing1 and each individual and church can meet it only by making larger gifts--not from an impulse1 but from a deliberate purpose formed under a sense of obligation to the ,negro1 the ,nation and to ,christ4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,rev4 ,w4,w4 ,,patton1 ,d4,d41 ,,ll4,d4 ,the sudden and unexpected death of ,dr4 ,patton takes away a man who has made a shining mark in the various relations of pastor1 secretary1 editor and president of a university4 ,all these responsible positions he has filled with great fidelity and success4 ,it becomes us to speak especially of his relations to this ,association1 which have been intimate and special4 ,he was one of the few men present at the formation of the ,american ,missionary ,association in ,albany in #ahdf1 encountering the obloquy and ostracism which was then attached to those who favored the new movement4 ,in #ahfh he became the ,western ,corresponding ,secretary of the ,association in ,chicago1 and held this position for about two years4 ,in #ahgg he accepted the ,presidency of ,howard ,university in ,washington1 ,d4,c41 the theological department of which is under the care of the ,association1 and in which ,dr4 ,patton was a teacher4 ,thus from the founding of the ,association till the time of his death1 ,dr4 ,patton had been connected with it1 sometimes officially1 and always with deep sympathy and earnest co-operation4 ,he was in usual health1 with his wonted vigor of body and mind1 till within a few hours of his death1 and on the day on which that occurred1 his ,presidency of ,howard ,university expired by the terms of his resignation4 ,he seemed to be went to the ,penitentiary in ,georgia for teaching ,indians to read2 and so on to where a ,moravian church of ,christian ,indians were cruelly tortured and murdered2 and so on to the last of our ,indian wars1 and it is a dark story of robbery and wrongs--we have spent five hundred millions on ,indian wars1 and have killed ten of our own people to every one killed of the ,indians4 ,thank ,god that by the efforts of ,christian men1 the heart of the ,nation has been touched1 and to-day willing hands and hearts are laboring for their ,christian civilization4 ,when ,i went to my diocese thirty years ago1 there were over twenty thousand ,indians in ,minnesota4 ,they had sunk to a depth of degradation their heathen fathers had not known4 ,friends told me it was hopeless1 that they were a perishing race4 ,i said if they are perishing1 the more reason to make haste to give to them the gospel4 ,the picture was dark1 but not darker than that drawn by the pen of divine ,inspiration in the first chapter of ,romans4 ,i carried it where ,i have learned to take all which troubles me1 and at my blessed ,saviour's feet ,i promised ,i would never turn my back on the ,indian whom ,god had work1 ,i had both of my ,indian missions destroyed1 church and mission house burned1 and our western border for three hundred miles desolated by an ,indian massacre1 which destroyed the fairest portion of our ,state1 and left eight hundred of our citizens sleeping in nameless graves4 ,it was needed to teach us that nations as well as individuals reap exactly what they sow4 ,we began again4 ,here and there some ,indian would listen1 and the gospel was the same to him as to us4 ,one day an ,indian came to our missionary and said1 ,i know this religion is true4 ,the men who have walked in this new trail are better and happier4 ,but ,i have always been a warrior1 and my hands are full of blood4 ,could ,i be a ,christian8 ,the missionary repeated the story of ,god's love4 ,to test the plain log house1 and you might wonder why the tears came in my eyes as he said to me1 ,that is my daughter's room2 the boys sleep up stairs2 this is for me and my wife4 ,they are tears of joy1 for ,i knew them when they herded as swine1 in a wigwam4 ,it is the religion of ,christ which has brought respect for womanhood4 ,i want to take you far away in the forest to ,red ,lake4 ,the head chief1 object1 a man or a woman4 ,the nicest shade of meaning in ,st4 ,paul's ,epistles could be conveyed in ,ojibway1 and ,i have heard a missionary say1 ,a classic ,greek temple standing in the forest would not be more marvelous than this wonderful language4 ,the ,indians are heathen folk and will often come to the ,christian life fettered by old heathen ideas1 and some may stumble and fall2 they did in ,st4 ,paul's time2 but ,i can say that some of the noblest instances of the power of religion ,i have ever known have been among these poor red men4 ,i can recall death-beds where an ,indian making the ,indian a voter4 ,i said1 ,it has been tried4 ,under an old territorial law1 any ,indian who wore the civilized dress could vote4 ,i have heard of an election where a tribe of ,indians were put through a hickory shirt and pair of pants1 and we know how that election went4 ,the ,indian must have the protection of law4 ,in his wild state he has the lex talionis4 ,he becomes a ,christian4 ,a drunken wild man kills his cow or insults his wife4 ,he could punish the brute1 but we have taught him that he must not revenge his wrongs1 and so the ,christian ,indian is pitiably helpless4 ,i can take you to an ,indian village where property and life are safe1 where childhood1 womanhood1 and old age are cared for1 and it is due to the ,gospel of ,christ4 ,while missionary work must be carried on in the native tongue1 the schools ought to teach the ,english language--if schools are conducted only in the heathen tongue1 you not only have no ,christian ideas1 but when the child has learned to read1 he has no books4 ,he should be taught in a language which opens to him the literature1 the science and the ,christian teaching of the ,christian world4 ,the ,gospel of ,jesus ,christ will do for the ,indian what it has done for others through all the ages--give him home1 manhood and freedom4 ,lastly--we are living in eventful times4 ,one hundred years ago the people who spoke the ,english tongue were less numerous than some of the ,latin races of ,europe4 ,to-day one hundred and fifty millions of people speak the ,english language4 ,when we remember how ,god made the ,greek tongue the language of the world to prepare for the first preaching of the ,gospel of ,his ,son1 may we not believe he designs to use our ,english tongue to prepare for the second coming of our ,lord8 ,brethren1 we hear a great deal about ,indian problems1 ,negro problems1 and problems which hinder all work for ,god and man4 ,when ,general ,sherman and other officers of the army were sent out to investigate that awful massacre in ,colorado1 they wrote in their report3 ,the ,indian problem1 like all other human problems1 can be solved by one sentence in an old book--',do unto others as you would have them do unto you4' 99 99 99 99 99 ,,letter ,,from ,,miss ,,collins4 ,i went to ,oahe to take two girls to school1 and was gone eleven days4 ,i travelled nearly three hundred miles1 driving my ponies myself1 and last ,sabbath held the services for ,spotted ,bear in the morning1 as ,mr4 ,riggs was absent2 taught a class in the afternoon1 and returned to ,cheyenne agency on ,monday1 to find that the ,indian man who went with me had returned home4 ,i visited the ,government school there1 and witnessed ,major ,mc,chesney issue the annuities to the ,indians2 found a party of ,indians hand and to hear them say1 ,you were my first teacher4 ,one night1 when ,i was coming home1 we got into camp1 and the ,indian tent had on one side a man and his wife1 his son and daughter1 and his ,massachusetts and ,rhode ,island may find their four teachers sustained by the ,woman's ,home ,missionary ,association1 and many ,massachusetts ladies who have been especially interested in the school at ,tougaloo may rejoice to be connected with such an institution4 ,connecticut ladies have done much for their school at ,thomasville1 ,ga41 although not as largely through their ,state ,union4 ,this school was begun through the liberality of a ,connecticut lady1 and for its continuance and development this ,association depends upon the ,bureau of ,woman's ,work4 ,contributions from all sources are solicited4 ,the ,new ,york ,union abides by its principles to increase its contribution each year1 and in addition to the support of three missionaries1 pledges six hundred dollars to the general work4 ,the ,ohio ,union comes forward also with an appropriation to the general work1 additional to the support of four missionaries4 ,the ,illinois ,union continues its support to two
