movements of the deeper waters beneath4 ,the re-election of ,speaker ,reed to ,congress1 and the contest for the re-election of ,mr4 ,breckinridge in ,arkansas2 the ,federal ,election ,bill1 which proposes to secure a free ballot for all men irrespective of color1 and the ,convention in ,mississippi1 which aimed avowedly to curtail the voting of the colored people--all these derive their importance from their relation to the gravest problem of ,american statesmanship4 ,that problem will not be settled by the results of either of these current questions4 ,for at the bottom the real question is3 ,shall knowledge and character and property become the possession of the colored race1 and they thus be prepared for their place in ,american politics1 industry and prosperity1 or will they be allowed for the lack of these things to be crushed back into a condition of semi-slavery or be goaded to resistance or discouraged in poverty1 pauperism and degradation8 ,that is a fundamental question4 ,for that1 men should read1 think1 pray and work4 ,the ,federal ,election ,bill ,and ,the ,mississippi ,convention4 ---------------------------------------- ----------------- ,the ultimate aim of the ,federal ,election ,bill in ,congress1 and of the ,constitutional ,convention in ,mississippi1 point in diametrically opposite directions4 ,they cannot be harmonized1 and there is no middle way between them4 ,the ,election ,bill contemplates a free ballot and fair count for every voter1 including the ,negro4 ,the ,mississippi ,convention aims to restrict ,negro suffrage4 ,in an address delivered by the ,president of the ,convention1 ,september #aath1 he is reported to have said that3 ,he did not propose to mince matters and hide behind a subterfuge1 but if asked by anybody if it was the purpose of the ,convention to restrict ,negro suffrage1 he would frankly say1 ',yes2 that is what we are here for4' ,this ,convention proposes to secure its object not by the force and fraud of earlier days1 but by constitutional and legal methods--or at least by what has constitutional and legal forms4 ,all this1 however1 is another attempt to achieve the impracticable4 ,as the ,negro grows in intelligence and numbers1 he will claim his right to vote4 ,on the other hand1 the ,congressional ,election ,bill or any other legislation intended to secure the privilege of voting to the ,negro1 if made practical1 means a good deal4 ,if it is intended only to pass laws that shall be merely glittering generalities to vindicate the historic record of the ,republican party1 or to sanction its ,platform and the ,inaugural of the ,president--that is easily done and will1 of course1 amount to nothing--except as a political manoeuvre4 ,but if the movement means business1 and is to be pushed to its legitimate result1 then two things must be done3 the ,negro must be qualified to vote and to be voted for2 to elect officers and to hold office4 ,if the mass of illiterate and impoverished ,negroes are to be represented in ,state ,legislatures and in ,congress by persons as ignorant and poor as they are themselves1 these representatives will1 of course1 if in the majority1 be liable to rule and ruin2 if in a large minority1 they will hold a balance of power that may easily be controlled by demagogues4 ,to educate this mass up to the point of intelligence and the acquisition of property is ,america's great duty and the guaranty of her safety4 ,there is one thing more about it4 ,we have said that if the ,negro is to have the free exercise of the ballot1 he will insist on being voted for as well as voting4 ,if the ,negroes have power to elect1 they will wish to elect some of their own number4 ,they will not1 and certainly they ought not to vote for a man simply because he is black4 ,they should vote for the best qualified man whether he is black or white4 ,if they have the power they will certainly elect some of their own number4 ,but this means1 if it means anything good1 that there shall be those of their own number who are qualified to hold office and to hold it honorably to themselves and usefully to their constituents and the country4 ,but this implies higher education to a good many colored people4 ,it will not do for them to have a few men educated as professional politicians4 ,may ,heaven save them from the day when they will encourage the growth of such a class of men4 ,they will need to have a large number of educated men in the various walks of life1 from whom suitable candidates may be selected1 just as white men have4 ,but if they are to have such a class of men1 adequate measures must be taken for their higher education1 and those friends of the ,negro who desire and help to educate him only in primary studies1 while they are doing a great and essential work1 are not doing all that is needed4 ,it may be all well enough to say to the ,negro1 ,work hard and keep out of politics4 ,but if he is allowed to enter into politics freely1 he will do it just as other men do4 ,there is enough human nature in him to secure that4 ,and any view of this matter that accepts the theory of a free ballot to the ,negro1 will be short-sighted1 if it does not aim at the education of the mass of the ,negroes as the mass of the white people are educated1 and at the higher education of a proportionally large number of the ,negroes4 ,if ,congress and ,mississippi ,conventions should turn their attention in this direction1 their work would be more significant than the efforts they are now making4 ,notes ,from ,the ,west4 -------------------- ,by ,district-,secretary ,c4,w4 ,hiatt4 ,sylvan1 terraced1 lacustrine2 cottages by the score1 gay in color1 unique of design2 people everywhere1 chatty1 erudite1 artistic1 processional2 round tables1 leagues1 societies and circles2 lectures1 sermons1 concerts and conferences--a school1 a church1 a university--all this1 and throughout it all a steady pulse of religious heart and heartiness--such is the ,chautauquan ,assembly of ,bay ,view1 ,michigan4 ,one of the important features of this assembly is its annual missionary conference4 ,all denominations participate and the field of the world is brought vividly before the mind by the laborers from here and there4 ,an interesting testimony by a missionary from ,singapore was to the effect that many of the most cultured and generous people he had ever met were ,chinese4 ,by the aid of influential ,mongolians--though they were heathen--he was once enabled to start a school which grew rapidly till hundreds were enrolled and a permanent religious center of great importance was established4 ,the whole account was thrilling4 ,specially kind was the hearing given the representative of the ,american ,missionary ,association work1 and the eager quest for literature which followed showed that all words had not been lost4 ,denominational lines were not conspicuous4 ,the black cat of statistics scampered across the rostrum only once or twice4 ,a fitting rebuke to this audacious creature was couched in the story told by a missionary of a visit he had received from another worker on the field1 and their mutually forgetting to inquire into each other's church connections1 so great was their interest in the tasks in hand4 ,afterwards1 the ,methodist brother learned that he had entertained a ,baptist unawares--,selah4 ,an interesting disclosure was recently made1 when the organ of ,vine ,st4 ,congregational ,church in ,cincinnati was removed from the rear to the front of the auditorium4 ,midway between ceiling and floor1 on either side of the recess1 were two doors in the wall4 ,these could only be reached by ladders4 ,what were they for8 ,ah1 they have a history4 ,they open into rooms which1 in ante-bellum days1 were used as stations of the underground railway4 ,here fugitives from across the ,ohio were secreted until they could be spirited on1 by night1 towards the waters of ,erie4 ,these doors on the wall speak volumes for the history of the church4 ,i wonder not that even now1 though in the very commercial center of the city1 far from the residence portion1 this church is in full career of evangelistic life4 ,churches with such doors as those in their walls need not be expected to vegetate1 nor to die4 ,i like to visit the smaller churches as opportunity is given4 ,their zeal for the causes of humanity is often very intense and intelligent4 ,sometimes1 too1 their contributions are a surprise4 ,i know a little country church in ,ohio that one day raised forty-six dollars when only forty-five persons were present4 ,it was ten miles by stage from the railroad4 ,now another gratifying surprise3 out of that little flock several people are planning to go to the ,northampton meeting4 ,i also know a church of foreigners1 ninety-seven in membership1 that raised forty-seven dollars and fifty cents for our work in an evening collection1 or about fifty cents per capita4 ,awhile ago these foreigners were a part of our ,city problem4 ,by the grace of ,god1 they are now out of the equation1 and themselves1 in turn1 become helpers in solving that other more extensive problem1 of the races in the ,south4 ,such things as these encourage us4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,chicago ,theological ,seminary is desirous of completing its files of the ,,american that is prosaic4 ,it is not apostolic2 those apostles tied on their sandals1 girt up their garments and walked4 ,but ,i found ,i couldn't do that way1 for there was the big ,cumberland to cross and several creeks1 not to speak of runs1 branches and mud-holes4 ,the circuit riders8 ,yes1 they went on horseback2 that must be my way1 so ,i consulted ,brother ,tupper and he borrowed ,mr4 ,perkins's horse1 noted as being an easy-going roadster4 ,easy8 ,well1 ,i do suppose the horse was all right1 but ,i must indulge in one groan4 ,it was a long time since ,i had been on horseback4 ,i wanted to go to the stable to get on1 but the young man insisted on bringing the steed down to the hotel as soon as he had his feed1 and in due time he came1 a tall fellow1 and ,i doubted my ability to get my foot up to that stirrup1 and somewhat whether ,i could boost myself over into the saddle if ,i did2 so ,i quietly and gently coaxed him up to the piazza and actually succeeded the first time trying4 ,how many of the gentlemen1 sitting in their ,sunday best on the piazza1 smiled1 ,i do not know--,i didn't dare to look4 ,i know ,i sat up ever so stiff and tried to look just as if ,i had been a circuit rider for forty years or so4 ,i must cross the river to begin with4 ,now they hadn't given me any whip and ,i didn't dare ask the owner of the horse--,colt1 gone four--he said1 for a whip or even a switch1 but ,i wondered what ,i would do if the animal should take it into his head to turn around or do something awkward right in the middle of the river4 ,i didn't want to get off1 for ,i must get on again4 ,as good luck would have it there was a kind-eyed man sitting on a stone by the riverside1 and ,i asked him to get me a stick4 ,he gave me one he had in his hand and ,i felt better4 ,does the ford go right straight across8 ,i asked4 ,no1 you must make a curve up towards the dam or you will get into deep water1 and there are boulders too1 you must avoid1 or your horse may fall down4 ,a curve6 ,now a straight line1 two points being given1 can be defined4 ,and if ,i could steer for some given point on the opposite bank1 ,i could hit it if the current did not take me down stream2 but a curve is awfully uncertain1 and my mind was in a state of perturbation4 ,however1 ,i got across with nothing worse than a good spattering4 ,i wish ,i could paint the pictures constantly opening on the view as ,i rode along4 ,forest clad mountains rose on every side with huge cliffs peering grimly out4 ,sometimes these cliffs overhung the road and occasionally a great slab of slate projected sufficiently to furnish shelter for a family4 ,in one place a farmer had taken advantage of this and made his stable under a rock4 ,a great slab of shaly slate projected so that he had a roof some fifty feet long and ten or fifteen wide4 ,my mind went back eighteen hundred years and more to another stable in a rock and the wonderful scene enacted there4 ,it was not easy to believe that the little cabins1 looking like miniature houses which might be built by boys for play1 were actually homes1 occupied by families1 father1 mother and eight or ten children2 but such is the case4 ,seven miles of constantly changing pictures1 but all beautiful1 brought me to ,rockhold1 a name ,i had supposed derived from its physical characteristics1 but which ,i was informed was given in respect to a family formerly the most important in the vicinity but now quite gone4 ,i made my way to the little church4 ,in front was a huge wagon and in a little grove at the back several horses tied4 ,i had been informed that ,i might safely address any man ,i found prominent1 as ,elliott1 and as ,i entered ,i so accosted an elderly man whom ,i found in charge of a large class of young men4 ,about fifty were present1 ,mr4 ,elliott being the only male teacher1 three young ladies1 two of whom ,i learned had been educated at ,berea1 having charge of classes4 ,after the lesson ,i addressed the people4 ,the characteristic that impresses me more than any other is their solemn seriousness4 ,they listen intently and with great eagerness4 ,they are hungry for preaching and feel it a great hardship that they can only have it occasionally4 ,their faces were a study4 ,there was hardly a weak one among them and many bore the impress of great strength4 ,but ,i would as soon have told a story or joked at a funeral as under their serious eyes4 ,the meeting over1 several invited me to go by and take dinner1 and ,i accepted the first offer1 which was made by a nice looking young lady in mourning1 who urged her claim by saying3 ,all the preachers go to our house and father will be so disappointed if he don't see you2 he couldn't come to-day4 ,this country has not yet got to the point of thinking bridges necessary and roads are not for those who sit on springs and cushions4 ,i never wished so much for a ,kodak that ,i might carry away a picture which ,i shall always have in memory4 ,to the long wagon1 which had a high rack all around it1 were yoked a pair of milk-white oxen1 round and handsome4 ,in front was seated ,mrs4 ,elliott1 holding her youngest child4 ,at her side a boy1 perhaps twelve1 who guided the team by a line attached to a horn4 ,seated on chairs were nine young ladies and girls1 nearly all in pretty white dresses4 ,two miles of beautiful scenery and we reach the farm house1 a commodious and substantial rural home1 of ,john ,elliott1 who gave me a cordial welcome and soon the long table in the kitchen was spread with such a meal as ,i had not enjoyed in many a day4 ,the menu did not record many ,french dishes1 but everything was good1 abundant and wholesome4 ,after dinner1 ,mr4 ,elliott told me a story worth recording4 ,it was that of the heroic ,mr4 ,richardson1 who before the war was a teacher in that district--a ,northern man--and1 in the excited state of feeling in the ,south1 was suspected of being an abolitionist4 ,he and his wife were driven from their home and work1 but protected from personal violence by the prompt and energetic efforts of the ,elliotts4 ,but as both ,dr4 ,roy and ,mr4 ,ryder have given the details to the public1 ,i will not repeat them here4 ,i will only add that of the fifty persons who had signed the paper pledging themselves to remove ,richardson1 it would be difficult to find one now in ,whittley ,county4 ,they are scattered or dead4 ,but in the little church at ,rockhold1 the name of ,richardson is a sacred one1 and the stranger always hears the story4 ,i took leave of this interesting family with great regret4 ,as ,i sat in the little grove in front of the house1 with its carpet of myrtle1 and looked off over the peaceful valley1 ,i wished ,i might remain there and rest4 ,that horse had it pretty much his own way on the return seven miles1 and when ,i thought nobody was looking ,i must confess to finding it a very pleasant thing to get both legs on the same side of the saddle4 ,but ,i am glad ,i went to ,rockhold4 ,i would not lose the pictures ,i got there for a small sum and ,i hope and pray that the time may soon come when in some way a regular preacher may be provided for the people4 ,church ,work4 ------------ ,dedication ,of ,a ,church ,at ,byron1 ,ga4 ,words fail to express the pleasant time we had at ,byron1 in dedicating our new house of worship to the service of ,god4 ,we had a very large attendance of people from ,bibb1 ,houston1 ,taylor and ,sumter counties4 ,nearly two hundred people came from ,andersonville1 a large number came from ,macon and quite a company from ,rutland4 ,one brother was present from the ,savannah church4 ,altogether there were five of our ,congregational churches represented by their members and several others were heard from4 ,i should think that there were nearly1 if not quite1 four hundred people on the grounds4 ,of course the building could not hold them all4 ,rev4 ,j4,r4 ,mc,lean preached the sermon1 which was pronounced by a leading white man present1 to be the best he ever heard4 ,altogether the occasion was an inspiring one4 ,the hundreds of black faces so attentively listening to the words of truth1 so orderly and quietly1 could not fail to impress us deeply4 ,the occasion was one that brought four of our churches into a very close relationship1 closer than they have ever been before2 ,i mean1 so many from each church meeting face to face and forming each other's acquaintance4 ,it is our wish and prayer to do well the work that is committed to our hands4 ,we are not afraid of hard work1 we want time and means to do all that we see is needed1 and there is so much to be done4 ,i feel like going1 going all the time with the message of ,god's love to dying men4 ,the opportunities are constantly increasing for usefulness4 ,promising ,opening ,in ,georgia4 ,i came to the place where the people wanted a ,sunday-school4 ,they were ready for it1 with a rude building erected by the people themselves1 and waiting for me to begin work1 and ,i have promised to organize a ,sunday-school on the second ,sunday of next month4 ,a young married woman1 the wife of a well-to-do farmer1 and a former student in the ,ballard ,school1 has promised to superintend it4 ,she expects at least fifty scholars1 many of them her day pupils4 ,i have given her singing books and shall send to ,boston for ,sunday-school supplies4 ,there is reason to believe that we can some day organize a church in that place4 ,i preached in the new building last night and at the close of the service nearly twenty-five bowed for prayers and asked for mercy4 ,it was really affecting and ,i only regretted that ,i could not remain and continue the work which begins in so promising a manner4 ,i have not the time to describe in detail the work done on this trip4 ,all along the road for nearly forty miles people stopped me and ,i them to talk about the love of ,god for man and the gift of his dear son as their ,saviour and ,redeemer4 ,my heart burns with a desire to do them good and ,i am so happy in helping them see the truth as it is revealed in the ,bible4 ,there are hundreds of colored people in that county who have no proper religious instruction4 ,they come from far and near whenever ,i go into that region1 and seem to be blessed in listening to the word of ,god4 ,i am constantly1 from a half-dozen different counties1 hearing the ,macedonian cry3 ,come over and help us4 ,i wish you could go with me and see these golden opportunities4 ,if our churches saw the needs and the openings for doing good1 they would increase many fold their offerings to this work4 ,encouraging ,indications4 ,i can see a manifestation of real earnestness on the part of a larger proportion of the members of our church than at any time before since ,i have been here4 ,while none of our meetings are attended so well as they should be1 at the same time they are spiritual4 ,and now1 as we are getting our minds and hearts ready for some extra meetings1 our prayer meetings are full of tenderness and sweetness4 ,last ,thursday night1 though it was raining at the meeting hour1 a goodly number came out and the blessed ,lord was with us4 ,our subject was ,the ,christian dignity of labor4 ,it seemed to be a new truth when they could see from his own word that ,jesus was interested in our daily work1 ,john #ba3 #c-f4 ,one faithful sister who is trying to educate and provide for six children was very much helped by the fact that ,jesus would guide her if she was only willing to follow his direction4 ,the prayer meeting is the life of the church4 ,i spent two days with ,brother ,s---- at ,b---- last month1 in some extra meetings4 ,the meetings were quite well attended2 a goodly number of white people were with us at almost every meeting4 ,the ,methodist minister of the town was present and offered prayer4 ,he expressed himself as highly pleased with the sermon and hoped that we might do much good in the name of the ,lord4 ,i find the very best of feeling towards our church there on the part of the white people4 ,i hope the church will do well and grow in numbers and influence4 ,,jackson ,,st4 ,,church1 ,,nashville1 ,,tenn4--,yesterday was a red-letter day for ,jackson ,street ,church4 ,it was communion day4 ,two were baptized and admitted to the church4 ,our congregation numbered more than one hundred1 the largest audience we have yet had4 ,it was also the day for special collection4 ,we collected thirteen dollars4 ,this was done by means of the envelope system without any blast of them realize that steady1 uninterrupted attendance was absolutely necessary to good work1 but as they have opportunity to compare the positions taken and the work done by those who were regular and who remained at school long enough to be really fit for good service1 with those who thought they could come in ,january and leave in ,april1 getting an imperfect knowledge of things1 to their credit be it told1 they learn--some cannot learn life's lessons--and there has been lately a gratifying eagerness to be present at every recitation during the whole year4 ,i do not think one has left this audience and moved ,mr4 ,moody at once to do something about it4 ,under his inspiration three thousand five hundred dollars were raised to establish several new ,indian mission stations in ,dakota4 ,at ,mr4 ,moody's solicitation1 ,mr4 ,shelton attended the ,northfield ,missionary ,meeting this year1 making report of what had been done with the money given before4 ,the enthusiasm of the audience was again kindled1 with a result which we give below1 condensing the sketch of the meeting as given in the ,springfield ,union4 ,the meeting opened with prayer by ,major ,d4,w4 ,whittle1 and then ,rev ,c4,w4 ,shelton of ,new ,york ,city1 who is connected with the ,american ,missionary ,association1 spoke about the work among the ,indians4 ,he said that two years ago the people of ,northfield gave money enough to establish five mission stations2 and he would first report on the work in those missions4 ,the first one had been established one hundred and fifty miles northwest of ,bismarck1 and was called the ,moody station4 ,having found two classes of people thirty miles apart1 both of whom seemed to be equally in need1 we had been in doubt as to where to plant the station2 but finally a man was found whose parentage included both nations1 and who was willing and able to preach to both in their own language4 ,we had1 therefore1 started two stations1 calling them both by the same name1 and with this man managing them4 ,people had told him that he couldn't do anything in the interior of the country occupied by the ,indians1 but he described his meeting with the ,indians at that remote place1 and their willingness to receive the gospel1 one of the chiefs finally saying to him3 ,when you go back ,i want you to take that man by the hand that sent that school and thank him1 and tell him that we will try to live like the white man4 ,the speaker accordingly took ,mr4 ,moody's hand and thanked him in those words1 raising a perfect storm of applause by so doing4 ,the next mission was called the ,frederick ,darling ,memorial mission1 and was established sixty miles below ,bismarck4 ,there was good work going on there4 ,sixty miles farther down still there was located the ,robert ,remington ,memorial mission1 and the reservation had since then been opened up for settlement1 as they had prophesied1 and1 as the ,indians came up the valley1 driven out from their homes1 there stood a man at the door of the mission1 who invited them in1 and so to-day there were gathering round that mission hundreds of ,indians1 forsaking their tepees1 building their houses and taking the first steps toward civilization4 ,on ,cherry ,creek1 the ,sankey mission was located1 and1 although it was not two years since that work was begun1 they had a church of about forty members4 ,the funds for the ,northfield mission were given by quite a number of people here and the ,indians who could be reached by it from the opening of the reservation during the last few months had nearly doubled4 ,they had organized one church only a few weeks ago some distance off1 and expected to organize another there within a few months4 ,what do you want now8 said ,mr4 ,moody at this point4 ,mr4 ,shelton replied3 ,we haven't a dollar for carrying on a single one of these missions after the first of ,september4 ,it costs from #cjj to #cej to carry each of them on4 ,but ,i believe that ,god has started this work and will carry it on4 ,let me add a word with regard to the whole ,indian problem4 ,it is not the problem ,i presented to you two years ago2 it has changed in the two years1 and1 thank ,god1 it will change in two years more1 if we do the work we ought to4 ,do we realize that our ,indians are getting beyond the wild life8 ,forty thousand ,indian people have come out of the tepee life into little homes that these ,indian men have built for themselves1 taking their people forward toward ,christ4 ,we talk of the ,indian in his paint and blanket1 forgetting that he is coming forth into life4 ,his game is gone1 his wild roving life is gone1 his reservation is going4 ,they understand their position2 the old life is back of them forever4 ,what is before them8 ,old ,gall showed a scar reaching from his shoulder to his hip1 and said3 ',a white man gave me that2 shall ,i trust him1 dare ,i trust him1 can ,i trust him8' ,the ,indian takes a step ahead1 and stops and trembles1 doesn't know if he dare take another4 ,do you want to know the solution of the ,indian problem to-day8 ,in ,christ's love take the ,indians by the hand and lead them out into the same light1 the same love1 and to the same ,christ that you have4 ,you can talk about the government and land in severalty4 ,grand and good as these are1 the first and all-important thing in that problem is the gospel of ,christ4 ,it must do it1 it can do it1 it is doing it1 it will do it4 ,the ,women's ,missionary ,societies of fifteen ,indian churches gave #bjj more for home missionary work outside themselves than the ,women's ,missionary ,societies in one hundred and forty churches of white people in the same time4 ,they have ,christian ,endeavor societies there1 and all kinds of ,christian work4 ,i saw one morning delegates from the ,christian ,endeavor ,society going out to teach a white ,sunday-school nine miles off in one direction1 and another similar school four and one-half miles off in another4 ,it is said that the young people will go back to the blanket4 ,in ten years we have had only one case of that in our ,santee school1 and that was the case of a young girl who had only been in the school six months2 #ie per cent4 of all that come to the schools go back consecrated young men and women4 ,when you think that your five stations have gathered in two or three hundred scholars and of the possibility for each1 can you tell what will be the result of this work8 ,there are thirty thousand poor ,indians in ,dakota alone1 lifting up their cry to the ,christian church for light and hope4 ,he added3 ,i have turned my back to many storms on the ,dakota prairies1 but ,god grant you may never turn your back on a soul praying for light4 ,i sometimes dread the day of judgment1 because there is to stand the ,indian4 ,i would rather stand there in his place than to hear him say3 ',i was hungry and ye gave me no food4' ,how shall we meet it1 how shall we answer it8 for to meet it and answer it we must before the throne4 ,here ,mr ,shelton finished and sat down4 ,now let's pay our debts1 said ,mr4 ,moody4 ,how many people will give #ajj toward that #a1hjj for sustaining those missions8 ,it didn't seem as though there were many responses at first1 but in a few minutes eighteen names were handed to ,h4,m4 ,moore of ,boston1 who was keeping account1 and then ,mr4 ,moody asked if there wasn't anything else he wanted--a new mission anywhere8 ,mr4 ,shelton of course said there was1 and spoke of a place on the ,rosebud ,agency where #ejj was needed to build a school1 and #cjj to take care of it for a year4 ,here was ,mr4 ,moody's chance again1 and he asked if some one wouldn't give #ajj for that4 ,one or two contributions of #ajj were forthcoming1 and any number of fifties came in1 so that it was only a few minutes when ,mr4 ,moore announced that they had #hge for that4 ,then ,mr4 ,moody said he wanted to have the people start one more new mission and proposed that unfailing ,american resource1 a collection4 ,the hats were soon busy in all parts of the house1 and at the end of the meeting it was found that #fdj had been collected for another mission1 making a grand total of #c1cae4jd1 to be exact1 raised within twenty minutes1 for the work among the ,dakota ,indians4 ,mr4 ,moody looked more bright and cheerful than he has during the building1 as you observe1 is of brick1 topped out with a shake roof put on by our brethren after the last 7of two or three ,i believe7 sweeping fires to which the little structure refused to succumb4 found that the advantages of ,christian schools1 brought so near to the mountain boys and girls by the ,american ,missionary ,association1 are not yet sufficiently within their reach1 and this gives rise to a new need in connection with our work in the ,south4 ,it is a need of young people and we turn to young people to meet it1 believing that our ,christian ,endeavor ,societies and other ,young ,people's ,societies will not lose this special opportunity for missionary work4 ,a ,student's ,fund of #c1jjj is to be raised in #ej shares1 upon which we will draw to bring the young people of the mountains into these schools1 and to help them over hard places according to their need4 ,pupils will be encouraged to help themselves all they can1 and no pledges will be made to any until they have reached the limit of their own resources1 and no specified amount will be assigned to any one pupil4 ,each will be helped according to his condition4 ,a boy may be able to reach the school and work part of his board and need only a small sum to cover the expense of the full year4 ,a girl may need to have her traveling expenses paid and only this2 another1 giving promise of usefulness1 may have her full way paid during the year4 ,some will be kept through the entire school year1 who otherwise could study but a few months4 ,the training the young people receive in these schools brings a sure reward4 ,we quote from a letter just received from one of our missionaries3 ,i am very hopeful for the ,christian work among the students this year4 ,the ,christian ,endeavor ,society is in much better condition than last year4 ,the members understand better the meaning of ',christian ,endeavor1' and that being a ,christian means a daily application of ,christian principles to every day life4 ,now why cannot our ,christian ,endeavor and ,young ,people's ,societies take this work to their hearts1 and thus be the means of preparing others for ,christian work8 ,why not do for these poor1 but bright and interesting ,american boys and girls there1 what will bring more of them into the fraternity of ,christian ,endeavor8 ,we will send at once to any who desire it1 full information of our and teachers1 before they disperse1 and organize a ,mission ,band4 ,the little church1 or rather schoolhouse1 is situated on a hill1 and there is a fine view of the rolling country2 only this morning one longs for a little shade4 ,one of our former scholars 7now working in the turpentine7 comes out and takes our horse4 ,the school is just over1 and we hear there is to be preaching at #aa2 it is now #aj3ae1 so we ask the pupils to stay4 ,we sing and then ,miss ,bechan explains about foreign missions and mission bands4 ,they give in their names and appoint officers1 agreeing to meet twice a young man1 who would gain much 7as would his hearers7 by attending school a few years4 ,this is one of the heart-sores in the work here--the great ignorance of many of the preachers4 ,some of them
