endeavoring to solve this problem1 and1 withal1 there has been a good deal of honest and efficient work4 ,the ,government has largely increased its appropriations from year to year1 the ,dawes ,bill and other valuable legislation have been secured1 so that steps looking towards the citizenship of the ,indian have been attained4 ,appropriations have been granted to aid him in farming and other industrial pursuits1 and it is not unlikely that in a short time provision will be made for the education in the common ,english branches of every ,indian child4 ,but all this is not sufficient4 ,the ,indian may have lands and citizenship and an ,english education1 and yet1 if he has no strong impulse towards civilization1 no motive in his heart impelling him to be an industrious1 self-supporting citizen--in short1 if he has not a new heart looking to a new life as a citizen and a man1 he will become a vagabond on the land granted him1 and a skeptic in the school in which he is taught4 ,the next few years will constitute a crisis in the rapidly changing condition of the ,indian1 and it is precisely at this point where the vital element of the ,christian life must be infused into his character4 ,to the ,christian public1 all other questions subordinate themselves to this1 and this needs1 not speculation1 but hard work2 legislation cannot do it1 the church must2 time will not do it1 ,christian teaching and example alone can4 ,the vernacular question1 so much agitated recently1 is important only as it may hinder this practical work4 ,the ,indian problem is not perpetual4 ,the ,indian must soon be merged into the ,american1 and whether this shall be for good or for ill1 the church must decide1 and decide speedily4 ,we trust1 therefore1 that our constituents will aid us to extend1 as rapidly as possible1 that part of the work entrusted to us4 ,we do not ask for expensive buildings or costly plant4 ,we ask for the means to push forward with the teacher and the preacher three places2 one ball entered the wrist and followed up the arm1 coming out near the shoulder1 a second went into the back of the shoulder1 and a third is probably lodged in the lungs4 ,the assault occurred ,may #ahth1 in the church in which ,mr4 ,lawrence was holding the school1 in the presence of his wife and scholars4 ,the only provocation pg #aig alleged1 was that he had gone the night before to ask for the tuition of one of his scholars4 ,he was met in an angry way by the woman1 and the next day the husband1 who does not live with his wife1 came to the school and fired the shots4 ,prof4 ,lawrence is the brother-in-law of our highly esteemed and active ,christian worker1 ,rev4 ,a4,a4 ,myers1 who has not only done so much in promoting school and church work in ,kentucky and ,tennessee1 but who has also been so zealous in promoting the cause of temperance4 ,prof4 ,lawrence sympathized and co-operated with ,mr4 ,myers in this good work1 and it is believed that liquor and liquor influence had much to do in inspiring the deed4 ,as all the parties in this transaction were white1 it is not at all probable that the color-line question had anything to do with it4 ,the community was moved with intense indignation1 and the assassin was speedily taken to the county jail to escape a lynching4 ,a large meeting was subsequently held in the ,baptist ,church1 and a committee was appointed to prosecute the perpetrator4 ,mr4 ,lawrence at this writing is in a very critical condition1 but hopes are entertained of his ultimate recovery4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,wade ,,hampton4 ,we opened the ,june number of the ,forum with the confident expectation that the article on ,what ,negro ,supremacy ,means1 by ,senator ,wade ,hampton1 would furnish some well-considered and statesmanlike views on that important topic4 ,we expected to find a fair1 if not an encouraging1 statement of the changes that twenty years have wrought in the educational and property qualifications of the ,negro4 ,but we confess our utter disappointment1 in finding that ,senator ,wade devotes his entire article to details of the ,acts of the ,south ,carolina ,legislature1 from #ahfh to #ahgf1 in other words1 to the reconstruction or carpet-bag period4 ,he adds1 it is true1 a quotation from an address of ,abraham ,lincoln1 but that dates back into the still remoter past1 #ahei4 ,mr4 ,lincoln learned something better before he died4 ,we make no defence of that carpet-bag ,legislature1 but does not ,senator ,wade recognize the change that has taken place in the condition of the ,negro--a change that is going on at an increased ratio8 ,would an article be worth much on ,what ,anglo-,saxon ,supremacy ,means1 based on extracts from ,roman histories in regard to the ancient ,germans8 ,true1 the comparison is an extreme one1 but it must be remembered that more progress is now made in human civilization in one year1 than in a century then4 ,but let us confine ourselves to the facts as they now stand4 ,the present generation of ,negroes in the ,south has had the aid of the public schools1 limited and inadequate as they are1 and it has had the still more valuable aid of schools sustained by ,northern benevolence1 supplemented in some cases pg #aih by aid from the ,southern ,states1 that have furnished instruction of the best quality in all ranges of study1 from primary to college and professional4 ,from ,hampton1 ,va41 to ,austin1 ,texas1 these schools1 supported by various religious denominations1 with carefully selected and thoroughly competent teachers from the ,north1 have been sending forth their graduates as teachers1 preachers1 professional and business men4 ,these schools of all grades number more than two hundred1 and a large per cent4 of their graduates become teachers who are giving a mighty uplift to their people4 ,a colored editor could say truthfully two years ago1 ,we have preachers learned and eloquent2 we have professors in colleges by hundreds1 and school-masters by thousands2 successful farmers1 merchants1 ministers1 lawyers1 editors1 educators and physicians4 ,to all this it may be added that careful estimates place the amount of property on which the ,negroes in the ,southern ,states pay taxes1 at one hundred millions of dollars4 ,surely this race could now furnish legislators more intelligent and more interested in the assessment of taxes than in #ahfh1 and the number and quality will be rapidly increased every year4 ,senator ,hampton might have looked around and ahead1 and not backward only6 ,his article1 as it stands1 stamps him as a veritable ,bourbon2 he has forgotten nothing and he has learned nothing4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,mr4 ,,cable',s ,,pamphlet4 ,a ,,colored ,,man',s ,,view ,,of ,,it4 ,mr4 ,cable's ,pamphlet1 ,the ,negro ,question1 was sent to an educated ,christian colored man in the ,south4 ,we make some brief extracts from his letter acknowledging the receipt of the pamphlet4 ,he says3 ,i have read ,the ,negro ,question1 by ,geo4 ,w4 ,cable1 and appreciate it highly4 ,it is the ablest treatment of the subject intellectually1 morally and judicially that ,i ever saw4 ,mr4 ,cable has dealt with that great question with the insight of a statesman and a thinker1 and the candor of a true ,christian4 ,oh1 how ,i am vexed and do smart when ,i think of the wicked treatment ,i and my people are subjected to on account of the ,god-given color1 and by a people claiming and professing to be ,christians6 ,i can hardly believe that any other people ever bore the names freemen and citizens1 and at the same time were shut out from so many of their rights and liberties as we are4 ,our manhood is outraged1 our civil and political rights are abused1 our women are robbed of their womanhood and their chastity is insulted1 our aspirations are banded and proscription is held up to our eyes wherever we go1 and enforced against us with ,egyptian exactness and ,spartan severity1 and the most vexatious and grievous fact of all is1 that the strong arm of the law of the land loses its power when it comes our turn to receive justice4 ,the law either plays truant1 or openly acknowledges that it has no power to defend us4 ,but the ,god of law and pg #aii justice1 who broke down one form of slavery1 will break down this1 too4 ,still1 there is a part for account of ill-health1 but others still are toiling on1 seeing the fruits of their labors in the new impulse given to the ,negro in his great race struggle4 ,among the earliest and most efficient of these workers was ,president ,ware1 of ,atlanta1 now gone to his reward4 ,mrs4 ,ware is still at the post of duty1 and1 though in feeble health1 clings with undiminished interest to her chosen life-work4 ,at the recent anniversary of the ,atlanta ,university1 the meeting of the ,alumni1 7,may #bhth71 was made pleasant and memorable by the presentation to ,mrs4 ,ware of a large portrait of herself4 ,it was wholly unexpected to her1 and her impromptu acknowledgment of the gift was made in the vein of her characteristic vivacity and kindness4 ,among the addresses made at the presentation1 was one by ,mrs4 ,chase1 herself one of our earliest and most honored laborers4 ,from this address we are permitted to make a few extracts4 ,it is very significant that at any time during these twenty years of your life here1 it would have been just as delightful to meet and say the pleasant words that leap to our lips1 as it is to say them to-day4 ,you1 whom we delight to honor this afternoon1 have held the same post of honor all these years1 but many of us do not know how delightfully you hold that place1 so ,i1 who have known you so long1 am asked to explain1 and if this hasty sketch seems too flattering to be given in your presence1 ,i fear you alone are responsible4 ,if you had put less into your life for us to admire1 we could put less into our expression of admiration4 ,we know how you lost early a good mother1 and that your father was taken when you were only eighteen2 but the missionary spirit of that father was repeated in the daughter4 ,we know of your being discouraged by a missionary ,board because applying so young1 but of your being finally accepted1 and going to ,hampton1 reaching that now famous school even before the veteran--,general ,armstrong4 ,then came the year of teaching at ,charleston1 a year so full of privations in those pioneer days1 that though repeated calls came to you from ,florida and ,georgia1 as well as the old fields1 you shrank from farther hardships and decided to remain at home1 till one ,sunday morning in ,connecticut1 twenty years ago1 these words were unfolded in a sermon1 ,simon1 ,son of ,jonas1 lovest thou me8 ,yea1 ,lord1 thou knowest that ,i love thee4 ,he saith unto him1 ,feed my ,lambs4 ,how easy it is for us now to see the beautiful ,providence of those wonderful words finding a swift response in your heart and bringing you at once to ,atlanta4 ,there are those before me now that greeted you then in ,storrs ,school4 ,how pg #bjj much we might say of that eventful year when you worked beyond your strength to fit the ,a class for ,atlanta ,university4 ,we can hardly see how it could have been otherwise than that the next year you should come to us1 the bride of our beloved ,president4 ,but position brought no exemption from hard work to either of you royal workers4 ,we shall never forget what hosts of friends have been won for the school by your ready pen and stirring words4 ,and during those sixteen memorable foundation years of our school1 which are so rapidly passing into history1 who can ever know how much of their grand success was due to you for your devotion to him who created ,atlanta ,university1 and made it what it is8 ,we may know in that day when ,he makes up his jewels4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,three ,,commencements4 ,,by ,a ,,visitor4 ,it has been my privilege to attend in succession the anniversary exercises at ,hampton1 ,va41 ,atlanta1 ,ga41 and ,howard ,university1 ,washington1 ,d4,c4 ,hampton1 as usual1 welcomed a crowd of visitors1 and among these a number of distinguished men--,governor ,lee of ,virginia1 and ,senator ,dawes1 being those most widely known4 ,the visitor sees here the magical touch of genius in these large and commodious buildings1 the schools1 the shops1 the houses1 the cottages1 and1 crowning all1 the stately chapel4 ,the plat of the village in which these are congregated realizes the words1 ,a mighty maze and not without a plan4 ,the effect of the whole1 threaded by winding roads1 shaded by trees1 and interspersed with gardens and shrubs1 is picturesque and practically convenient4 ,the main value of ,hampton1 however1 is found in what is done within these buildings--the teaching1 the industries1 the making of character4 ,the graduating exercises were the great attraction4 ,the addresses and papers of the pupils did not1 perhaps1 as a whole1 quite come up to what we have heard in other years1 but all were good and some of them of great excellence4 ,one is always impressed at ,hampton with the tone and local coloring of the addresses4 ,they are tinged and touched by the work done here1 and the races for and by whom it is done4 ,the titles of some of the pieces show this3 ,what is expected of a ,hampton ,graduate4 ,hampton ,girls4 ,mission ,work in ,tennessee4 ,way down in ,georgia4 ,progress of the ,oneidas4 ,of the same sort was the closing tableau1 ,the ,great ,father and his ,children1 a representation by ,indian students1 with the implements or products of the industries they have learned1 applying to the ,great ,father for admission to his country4 ,the exercises were closed by eloquent addresses1 given by ,rev4 ,dr4 ,parkhurst1 of ,new ,york1 one of the ,trustees1 ,governor ,lee1 of ,virginia1 and ,senator ,dawes4 pg #bja ,atlanta ,university now welcomes its visitors to its beautiful green lawns and fields1 which were once red clay washed into deep gullies4 ,the buildings are convenient and well-kept4 ,the ,baccalaureate sermon1 delivered by ,professor ,francis1 was very appropriate and touching4 ,the commencement exercises were held on ,monday1 ,may #bhth1 and were attended by a vast concourse of people1 many going away because the building1 though large1 could not give them room4 ,the aisles were crowded through all the services4 ,the audiences were1 as usual1 made up mostly of colored people4 ,heretofore1 at times1 the dignitaries of the ,state and city have graced the platform1 but ,governor ,gordon was out of town1 and1 perhaps1 if he had been at home1 he would not have attended4 ,the recent excitement about the ,glenn ,bill1 and the withdrawal of the #h1jjj1 the annual grant of the ,state1 have left the relations somewhat strained4 ,there is1 however1 no excitement on that subject4 ,the ,state authorities have not yet decided what to do with the fund1 and in the meantime1 the ,university goes quietly forward with its work4 ,prof4 ,bumstead has just succeeded in raising the #af1jjj necessary to meet the current expenses of the year4 ,at the anniversary exercises there were no graduates from the college department this year4 ,thirteen pupils1 all girls1 from the normal department1 read their essays and received their certificates of graduation4 ,the number of the class is supposed to be unfortunate1 but there was nothing amiss in the quality of the essays they read4 ,they were all good1 but the absence of any male voice left the class somewhat in the condition of a choir without a baas4 ,there was a noticeable difference in one respect between the essays on this occasion and those at ,hampton4 ,here there was no local or race tone4 ,if ,i had closed my eyes1 ,i might have thought myself at the anniversary of a ,ladies' ,seminary at the ,north4 ,scarcely a word or allusion indicated that these girls belonged to the colored race1 and for that matter their faces scarcely showed it1 for the white blood largely preponderated in most of them4 ,i can well understand why these pupils should prefer to stand forth not as a distinct race1 but as ,american and ,christian girls4 ,perhaps that is the higher wisdom1 but it makes the anniversary less distinctive1 and inspires less sympathy and enthusiasm4 ,these girls were plainly dressed1 and in that respect would differ greatly from the graduating class in a ,northern ,female ,seminary1 but they would have no occasion to shrink from a comparison with their ,northern sisters1 if propriety of deportment1 and excellence and force of writing were considered4 ,at the ,howard ,university1 we had the opportunity of attending only the exercises of the graduating class in college4 ,this institution has a good claim to its title as a ,university1 for it has collegiate1 medical1 theological1 law and normal departments4 ,the anniversaries of the theological and medical departments had been held a few days previously in pg #bjb churches down in the city1 and were attended1 as we understand1 by large audiences4 ,the college anniversary1 on the other hand1 was held in the college chapel1 which1 while it was well filled1 contained a relatively small audience1 and this was made up mostly of colored people4 ,we hardly appreciate this discrimination as to the places of holding these anniversaries1 for the orations in the chapel were of a high order1 and might well have attracted the attention of members of ,congress and of the numerous visitors in the crowded city4 ,the graduating class consisted of six persons1 one being a lady and she the only one of the class without apparent admixture of white blood4 ,the addresses were all orations1 and resembled somewhat the essays in the ,atlanta school in presenting almost no touch or tone of race or local surroundings1 the lady's being almost the only exception4 ,i could not avoid the conviction1 that if these well-trained minds had thrown themselves into topics more nearly related to their own life and race struggle1 there would have been more fervor in the oratory4 ,but some of these graduates will yet be heard from as useful laborers in some fields of active ,christian work4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,south4 ,,notes ,,in ,,the ,,saddle4 ,,by ,,rev4 ,c4,j4 ,,ryder1 ,,district ,,secretary4 ,i promised1 in my ,february ,notes in the ,saddle1 to give a brief account of the mountain campaign which had then just closed4 ,it was full of most interesting experiences4 ,we began the series of meetings in the ,congregational ,church1 ,jellico1 ,tenn4 ,the ,association was represented by one of its ,corresponding ,secretaries1 a ,district ,secretary1 and the writer4 ,beside these brethren from abroad1 the local force of ,a4,m4,a4 workers was large1 and several neighboring churches of our ,congregational faith sent their pastors4 ,at ,jellico1 the ,a4,m4,a4 has planted both a church and a school1 and built a meeting house4 ,the interesting series of meetings1 which began at ,jellico1 was for the purpose of dedicating the neat ,congregational churches recently built by the ,association along this line of railroad4 ,preaching services were held every afternoon and evening1 the company of ministers taking turns1 as they pushed on from one church to another4 ,these churches are at ,jellico1 ,pleasant ,view1 ,south ,williamsburg1 ,williamsburg1 ,woodbine1 ,rockhold and ,corbin4 ,congregationalism1 through the ,a4,m4,a41 has taken possession of this whole region in the name of ,christ4 ,we can easily hold it in the interests of broad and evangelical ,christianity1 if our older ,congregational churches in the ,east and ,north arouse themselves to meet the pressing exigencies1 and realize the splendid pg #bjc possibilities that lie before them in this field to-day1 but which will be denied them in the near future4 ,one very interesting feature of these meetings was the dedication of a chapel which has been recently added to the ,williamsburg church1 and which is used for the infant class of the ,sunday-school4 ,this class had outgrown all the accommodations of the church1 in connection with the other departments of the ,sunday-school4 ,it had become a ,sunday-school of itself4 ,this chapel was1 therefore1 built and publicly set aside for the service of these little folks4 ,during these meetings1 our honored ,corresponding ,secretary and ,district ,secretary pushed through the storms and forded mountain streams together with the other brethren1 that they might keep the appointments which had been made for them4 ,dr4 ,roy's stereopticon views1 which have interested and instructed so many audiences in the ,north1 he used with great profit during this mountain campaign4 99 99 99 99 99 ,two men called upon ,brother ,myers1 our general missionary in this mountain region1 and requested that he and the writer visit the field1 some fourteen miles away1 from which they had come that morning4 ,they told a thrillingly interesting story of how ,god's ,spirit had entered their hearts1 and stirred them up to desire better things for their children and their community than they had enjoyed4 ,one of them was a son of a ,french ,catholic mother1 and had early adopted her faith4 ,his life had been wild and reckless1 until he found the ,saviour in a meeting led by an ,a4,m4,a4 missionary4 ,he was an intelligent man of some education4 ,he found others ready to join him in a movement for the elevation of the people4 ,they established a church and organized a ,sunday-school4 ,we pushed over the mountain on horseback1 after the other visiting brethren had left the mountain region1 to inspect personally this field4 ,we found it even as the men had represented it to be4 ,a little church had been organized and ,sunday-school gathered4 ,i could learn of no other ,sunday-school in that region4 ,i heard afterwards1 that one of the old-time preachers warned the people against the ,sunday-school1 saying1 ,it war a heap worse than a dancing place4 ,this same preacher had a vision1 and gave an account of it to his people4 ,two devils1 he said1 had been in that country getting up some sort of an institution that they called a church4 ,he warned his people against them4 ,the two men who visited us at ,jellico1 together with others who had joined with them in this effort to ,christianize and educate this community1 we found busy on a hillside1 laying the foundations of the new church house4 ,they were enthusiastic in this new movement1 which promised so much to their community4 ,they had drawn up a confession of faith and covenant1 which were evangelical and ,congregational4 ,they reported pg #bjd three thousand people living in the coves and valleys radiating from the point upon which they had planted their church house1 absolutely without intelligent ,christian instruction of any kind4 ,there were hundreds of square miles without a church building of any denomination4 ,this little company had been stirred up by ,god's ,spirit1 and were almost starving for spiritual food4 ,there was a pathos even in their peculiar mountain vernacular1 as one of them said to me1 ,i don't understand scarcely a word you uns say4 ,i'm too old to larn now4 ,i'se done left4 ,but ,i does want my chilluns to know somethin'4 ,i tell you1 ,i'd sell my old farm down in the cove so's to help my chilluns to know somethin'4 ,what a tremendous appeal this is from the very heart of our country6 ,all they asked was one hundred dollars1 to help them build this ,congregational church house by the side of ,hickory ,creek4 99 99 99 99 99 ,while writing these ,notes1 there comes flashing over the wires1 the news of this horrible crime committed upon the person of ,prof4 ,g4,w4 ,lawrence1 at ,jellico4 ,i remember a conversation ,i had with ,mr4 ,lawrence during this campaign of which ,i have been writing4 ,he had just been offered an important and lucrative position as teacher in the ,north4 ,he was a young man of only limited means1 and felt almost that he must go4 ,i told him we could not offer him financial inducements to remain1 but it seemed to me that the ,lord had called him to that work1 and ,i did not know where we could find a man to fill his place4 ,very well1 he replied1 ,i will remain4 ,the ,christian hero that he was1 he went patiently forward in this self-sacrificing labor4 ,now1 he has fallen by the hand of a brutal assassin6 ,this awful crime emphasizes the importance of this work1 and calls aloud to us to send more ,christian missionaries into this field1 until ,christian light shall displace the darkness of semi-barbarism4 99 99 99 99 99 ,turning a moment from the field in which our missions are planted1 to that from which they are supported1 ,i give three interesting incidents4 ,in a ,new ,england church two young girls came forward after hearing the story of the ,a4,m4,a4 work in the dark places of our country1 and pledged fourteen dollars1 which they had themselves gathered by the sale of articles which they had made4 ,a good example4 ,another little girl1 not ten years old1 had one dollar which she had been saving for sometime4 ,it was her total bank credit4 ,when she heard of our pressing needs1 she slipped her dollar into my hand1 asking that it be spent for the poor children in our field4 ,a woman1 for years an ,a4,m4,a4 teacher1 but now a bed-ridden invalid1 pledges #ajj to the work of the ,association4 ,what can we not do when there is so much of ,christian self-sacrifice in both departments of our field8 pg #bje 99 99 99 99 99 ,,anniversary ,,exercises ,,at ,,gregory ,,institute4 ,,wilmington1 ,n4,c4 ,our anniversary really began ,may #ah1 for on the evening of that date were held the public exercises of the ,gregory ,band of ,hope4 ,there are at least #afj members of this ,band and they hold fortnightly meetings4 ,one of the principal lessons which has to be impressed upon these children1 is the sacredness of the pledge4 ,we feel sure that much has been gained in this direction the past year4 ,there were those who would come forward and manfully confess when they had violated any condition of the pledge4 ,but the good done to the children is not the only benefit4 ,through these children1 the parents become interested in temperance4 ,one little boy said1 ,since ,i joined the ,band of ,hope ,i got my papa and mamma to join the pledge too4 ,many families were represented by either father or mother1 and in many cases by both4 ,this topic is destined very soon to be of paramount importance in the training of the colored people4 ,the week beginning ,may #ba was given up to examinations4 ,the pupils have in the main done well4 ,many of them in advancement and aptness will compare well with white children4 ,by reason of a re-arrangement in the course of study1 there was no graduating class this year4 ,however1 on the evening of ,may #be1 we had an exhibition given by the scholars4 ,the stage at the back was prettily draped with the national colors1 and flowers were scattered in profusion everywhere4 ,at the appointed hour the room was filled with the parents of the pupils and other friends of the schools4 ,the programme was a miscellaneous one1 made up of tableaux1 songs1 dialogues and recitations4 ,some of these reflected great credit upon the pupils and their teachers4 ,i say some of them1 because some parts were rendered so excellently as to astonish one who did not expect anything very good from negro scholars4 ,one beautiful scene was1 ,winding the ,may ,pole1 by twelve little girls dressed in white4 ,another striking piece was1 ,what ,alcohol has done for the ,nations4 ,different persons in appropriate costume represented the various nations of ,europe and one represented ,africa1 each in a short speech stating what havoc alcohol had made4 ,one young lad caused a good deal of merriment in declaiming ,theology at the ,quarters1 in which he drew a picture of the candidate for heaven being subjected to a close examination before he could be admitted through the ,alaplaster gate4 ,the questions1 said the declaimer1 you must answer mighty straight4 ,and de watermillion question gwine to cause a heap o' trouble4 ,when one of these colored people declaims in the ,negro dialect1 it is a treat4 ,there is nothing artificial about it4 ,the year has been a prosperous one4 ,the school-rooms have been crowded to their utmost capacity4 #cab different pupils have attended during some part of the year1 and average daily attendance has been #bcj4 pg #bjf ,excellent progress has been made4 ,another teacher is needed4 ,more and more are the colored people awakening to their real need--deliverance from the bonds of ignorance4 ,you older people in the ,north gave your sons to free the slave from human task-masters4 ,we who have arisen since the war look upon that as the noblest sacrifice which the history of our country presents4 ,but there still remains the great problem of freeing the black man from the slavery of ignorance1 superstition and sin4 ,the work increases upon our hands4 ,the ,south is struggling to rise4 ,it has this problem of illiteracy to settle4 ,we who have grown since the war could not carry a musket in '#fb1 but we are willing to carry the ,speller and the ,bible now1 and we do not consider this work one whit less honorable or necessary than the art of war4 ,do you8 ,wilmington is a city with a population of #be1jjj4 ,it is estimated that #ad1jjj of this is colored4 ,business is increasing fast and population is gaining proportionately4 ,how what is the import of all this8 ,large numbers of colored people will be attracted here4 ,it will be an objective point for educational work among them4 ,if we already have #cjj pupils1 the opportunity will then be enlarged many fold4 ,but even now we need more help4 ,cannot the friends at ,may #bf4--,while the white ,mississippians were laying the corner stone of a ,confederate monument at ,jackson1 the black ,mississippians were holding the closing exercises of their university at ,tougaloo1 only seven miles away4 ,,tougaloo ,,to-,,day4 ,for a wonder the war spared ,tougaloo4 ,less pretentious houses within sight of it were fired and destroyed by roving squads4 ,but the mansion1 in the midst of a grand grove of oaks1 stood intact4 ,when the war was over1 the ,american ,missionary ,association acquired #ejj acres of the estate1 including the mansion4 ,at the beginning the building afforded accommodations for both teachers and students4 ,but at present the mansion is used for the offices of the institution and for class rooms4 ,tougaloo has developed into one of the largest institutions for colored youth in the ,south4 ,the mansion1 which was the nucleus1 is now only one of half a dozen large structures4 ,to the north of it is ,strieby ,hall1 a long three-story brick structure4 ,the clay was dug1 the brick made1 and the walls laid1 chiefly by student labor4 ,to the south is another three-story dormitory4 ,another notable pg #bjg structure in the group is the ,ballard ,school ,building1 every nail in which was driven by the students4 ,about these larger buildings are grouped the ,ballard ,industrial shops and cottages4 ,three hundred and twenty-six students were enrolled at ,tougaloo the past year4 ,the steady growth in the attendance more than keeps pace with the increase in accommodations4 ,they come from all parts of ,mississippi1 ,yazoo ,county of terrible memories furnishing a representation notable for its numbers4 ,arkansas1 ,louisiana and ,tennessee are represented4 ,a ,,mississippi ,,mystery4 ,nowhere in the ,south is the negro so totally a nonentity in politics as in ,mississippi1 and yet nowhere in the ,south is there a colored institution so heartily commended as is ,tougaloo ,university by the white ,mississippians4 ,this seems odd1 hardly credible4 ,tougaloo is not a ,state institution4 ,mississippi has a system of instruction including a normal school and other departments for colored youth4 ,and yet every ,legislature makes an appropriation for ,tougaloo4 ,the institution's management reports the use made of the money1 and the ,governor appoints a ,board of ,visitors4 ,this is the extent of ,state supervision1 and still ,mississippi continues to make biennially an appropriation for the university4 ,the last ,legislature cut down the amount somewhat1 but it cut some of the white institutions worse than it did ,tougaloo4 ,perhaps a stronger evidence of the esteem in which this university is held by white ,mississippi is the social consideration bestowed upon those connected with the institution4 ,the prejudice which ostracises a nigger teacher and which is so pronounced in most communities where there is a colored institution1 is rarely observable here4 ,on the ,board of ,visitors are men of the highest standing1 like ,col4 ,j4,l4 ,power1 for almost a lifetime the head of the ,clarion2 ,oliver ,clifton1 the ,clerk of the ,supreme ,court1 and ,f4,a4 ,wolfe1 the former ,superintendent of ,education4 ,mr4 ,w4,s4 ,lemly1 one of the leading business men of ,jackson1 is a member of the ,board of ,trustees4 ,to visit ,tougaloo is not to lose caste in ,jackson society1 but is altogether a proper thing to do4 ,of course there is an explanation for this4 ,white ,mississippians are much like white ,georgians or white ,carolinians in their views on the race problem and on negro education4 ,tougaloo's peculiar relation to the white people must be accounted for by the features in which it differs from other colored institutions maintained by ,northern societies4 ,,the ,,secret ,,of ,,it4 ,the ,rev4 ,frank ,g4 ,woodworth1 ,president of the university1 was asked how he accounted for the exceptional esteem in which ,tougaloo is held4 ,his reply was3 ,i think the attention which we give to industrial education has a great deal to do with it4 ,that1 and the preparation of teachers1 pg #bjh are two things which we make most prominent in our work4 ,the white people can see the good effects of the training we give so plainly that they feel the work we are doing is good4 ,this view of ,president ,woodworth was abundantly confirmed by subsequent inquiries among white ,mississippians4 ,it is the industrial education the negroes are receiving there which so thoroughly commends the university to the dominant race4 ,the shops are considered fully as important as the class rooms at ,tougaloo4 ,carpentry1 painting1 tinning1 blacksmithing and wagon-making are taught1 not only the rudiments1 but to the extent of turning out finished workmen4 ,the shops were built by the students and are admirably equipped with tools4 ,wagons from the ,tougaloo apprentices sell for #fj in ,jackson1 and are preferred to the product of first-class wagon-makers4 ,the desk at which ,i sit1 and which will compare with skilled work anywhere1 was made by one of our students4 ,in the blacksmithing and wagon-making they learn to take iron and wood in the rough and turn out a good1 substantial wagon4 ,the value to the colored youth of such training can hardly be over-estimated4 ,they are trained to do skilled work1 to be self-reliant and self-supporting4 ,,the ,,farm ,,school4 ,but teaching the trades is but part of the system of industrial education at ,tougaloo4 ,each boy is required to work at least one hour a day on the university farm4 ,for all work over that hour the student receives pay1 the highest allowance being #g;c4 an hour4 ,the farm is not run to make money1 but to educate4 ,the idea is to make the operation of the farm an object lesson to the students in the better methods of agriculture and stock raising4 ,several students1 enough to take care of the steady and continuous farm work1 are employed all day on the farm and attend the night school1 but the bulk of the farm labor comes from the students1 who give from one to several hours to it outside of school4 ,last year the farm was run with but one man outside of the student help4 ,the boys1 while getting their book learning1 tilled eighty-five acres of corn1 fifteen acres of oats1 with a second crop of peas1 seventeen acres of cotton1 eight acres of peas1 three acres of sorghum1 two acres of garden and five acres of berries and orchard4 ,the stock cared for included #ajj head of blooded cattle1 forty sheep and forty swine4 ,the farm furnished the boarding department #ad1jjj pounds of beef and pork1 #hd1dgf pounds of milk1 and other products in proportion4 ,the university farm stock has a reputation ,state-wide1 and the exhibits are features of the annual fairs held at ,jackson4 ,while every boy in the institution has to do some daily work on the farm1 there is set apart for the ninth grade a special course of a year in agricultural instruction designed to make good1 practical farmers of those who take it4 ,so much for the boys4 pg #bji ,the girls get their full share of industrial training at ,tougaloo4 ,they have daily instruction in some branch of household duty1 ranging from dish-washing to canning and preserving4 ,sewing is taught from the plain darning and mending to fitting and dressmaking according to the latest fashion plates4 ,it has come to be well understood that the ,mississippi lady of a house who gets one of the trained students from ,tougaloo has a perfect treasure4 ,,the ,,study ,,of ,,housekeeping4 ,one of the latest additions to the system of industrial training for girls at the university is a novelty4 ,a cottage has been set apart--four girls are assigned to it for a month at a time4 ,there they keep house in all details4 ,they not only sweep and clean and cook1 but they buy their supplies1 keep account of all household expenses1 and manage as they will have to do when they get homes of their own4 ,a matron looks closely after the cottage feature1 which is intended to teach neatness and economy and to develop executive ability4 ,with ,tougaloo doing such a work as this1 how could the white ,mississippians feel otherwise than kindly toward her4 ,the cry has been that education ruins the nigger4 ,it has been asserted over and over--so many times that most ,southerners believe it as true as gospel--that higher education makes a negro too proud to work4 ,but here is an education the very central idea of which is work--work with the hands and the eyes4 ,here is a university which gives to the ,state skilled mechanics vastly superior to those who pick up their trades2 farmers who can make two bolls of cotton grow where one grew before2 stockraisers who know all the fine points of the various breeds4 ,governor ,lowry could well say in his last message to the ,mississippi ,legislature3 ,this university1 by its successful management1 commends itself to your favorable consideration4 ,at the closing exercises of the year yesterday1 ,tougaloo took another step forward4 ,instead of turning out a class of graduates1 the management increased the course and raised the standard4 ,an institution which does that is certainly progressive4 ,two of the notable things on the programme were an essay by ,lucy ,jenkins1 on ,what ,tougaloo ,does for the ,girls1 and an oration by ,james ,miller on ,industrial ,education4 ,both of them were well considered1 well written and well delivered4 ,the essayist and the orator were black1 not yellow4 ,their efforts would have done credit to ,anglo-,saxons of corresponding age1 ,north or ,south4 ,as for the musical part of the programme--ah1 there was melody indeed4 ,a negro boy named ,scott1 with all the features of the ,african strongly marked1 executed a difficult solo with an artistic appreciation which would have brought enthusiastic plaudits from an audience of critics4 pg #baj ,a ,,true ,,friend ,,of ,,the ,,race4 ,and then the ,rev4 ,dr4 ,william ,hayne ,leavell1 of ,meridian1 arose to deliver the annual address4 ,what a contrast6 ,dr4 ,leavell is a ,south ,carolinian by birth and a relative of the great ,nullifier ,hayne4 ,he comes of one of the proud old ,southern families and has the highest social connections4 ,he stands six feet high1 a magnificent specimen of physical manhood1 and as chock full of moral courage as he is of blue blood4 ,this man left his home1 declined an invitation to participate in the ,confederate corner-stone ceremonies1 and devoted his birthday anniversary to ,tougaloo4 ,dr4 ,leavell is a son-in-law of ,united ,states ,senator ,george1 of ,mississippi4 ,he is the man who delivered an address before the ,mississippi ,legislature last winter1 and denounced as cowards1 men who go about with pistols in their hip pockets4 ,and when the blank looks of amazement went round he rubbed his sentiments in on the ,mississippians and their folly1 of making themselves walking shooting galleries4 ,coming before the students of ,tougaloo yesterday1 ,dr4 ,leavell said3 ,my interest in you1 in this whole work1 grows out of a memory4 ,your fathers were the servants of my fathers4 ,i remember that in #ahfa1 when ,i was a very small boy1 the sound of war went through this land4 ,my father1 kinsmen and friends went forth to battle to keep your fathers in servitude4 ,i remember that not a few of your fathers knew what that war meant--that if my fathers succeeded1 your fathers would be kept in servitude forever and my fathers would remain the master class4 ,all the men that could protect the women and children were away4 ,the fathers and brothers and friends were away fighting4 ,we were in the power of your fathers and of some of you gray-headed people that ,i see4 ,i remember that when they returned from that war your fathers gave back to mine the women and children without a hair of their heads having been harmed4 ,i have remembered this with deep gratitude2 and ever since that time ,i have felt a deep interest in you4 ,it is therefore1 that ,i have come in response to the call to be here to-day4 ,,the ,,only ,,logical ,,result4 ,he proceeded at considerable length with such earnest advice as he might have given to the assembled students of a white university on commencement day4 ,after a time he touched upon the special condition which his audience presented4 ,i know1 said he1 of no people who have ever lived with a more difficult problem before them4 ,you have before you the duty of saving yourselves4 ,mark what ,i tell you1 no man of another race ever saved a people4 ,some man of you1 or of your race1 has got to go with the pillar of fire by night and the cloud by day1 and1 like ,moses1 lead you4 ,god knows many a man of my race has given his life and service for pg #baa yours4 ,and not only these men who fought at the end of a gun to make you free have given their lives for you1 but some of us from the ,south1 who stood with breasts suppose these negroes to whom you talked awhile ago become what you urged them to be--useful1 reliant1 well-to-do citizens--what will be their status politically8 ,will the white people1 with all this progress of the negro in education1 in industry1 in independence and in the acquisition of property1 acknowledge his political rights8 ,they'll have to1 sir1 was the prompt and emphatic reply4 ,this present condition of affairs can't go on4 ,we know that4 ,as the negro becomes qualified we've got to admit him to full citizenship4 ,w4,b4,s4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,which ,,will ,,be ,,the ,,under ,,dog ,,in ,,the ,,fight8 ,as a member of a ,boston ,raymond ,excursion in ,january last1 ,i spent three or four days in ,new ,orleans4 ,the ,president and a ,trustee of ,straight ,university visited our side-tracked train1 and invited us to call at the ,university4 ,quite a number accepted the invitation1 and in addition to being shown through the buildings1 we were entertained by the students1 under the supervision of the ,president and ,professors1 with hymns1 songs and plantation music1 with explanation by the ,president of the course of studies and progress of the students4 ,at the close of the reception1 it fell to my lot to acknowledge the civility shown us1 which ,i did in the following words3 ,in behalf of visitors from the ,raymond ,excursion1 it gives me great pleasure to express to the officers and students of ,straight ,university our thanks for the interesting reception we have received at their hands4 ,we have come from a long way off1 for sight-seeing1 and the study of the country1 but here we find something more than the wild mountains1 and desolate plains1 and border towns1 that are to make up so much of the interest of our journey4 ,through institutions like this1 a problem suggested to me in one of your streets will find solution4 ,i visited the ,republican ,state ,convention in session1 to see ex-,governor ,kellogg1 whom ,i had known in his boyhood among the ,green ,mountains1 and who was one of pg #bab the officers of the convention4 ,while there ,i listened to several speeches from colored men1 which1 for clearness of thought and pathos of oratory1 would have done credit to any public speaker in the country4 ,i have since learned1 with great pleasure1 that several of these gentlemen were graduates of this ,university4 ,on leaving the convention1 when scarcely a block away1 ,i met a well-dressed gentleman1 and naturally fell into conversation about the convention4 ,the gentleman claimed to have inherited the blood of ,boston1 but had lived twenty years in ,new ,orleans4 ,with respect to the convention1 he said3 ,i tell you1 sir1 the white people here will never consent to be governed by a lot of ignorant ,negroes1 like those in that convention6 ,i have thought on this statement1 and coming here1 ,i find its solution4 ,knowledge is power1 whether its possessor be white or black1 and unless the white people of the ,south make the education of their children more of a paramount interest than heretofore1 they will find the learning and muscle1 the precedents of wealth1 combined in the colored race4 ,the rural population will find that they need for themselves and their children a better knowledge than can be acquired from the court-house1 saloon1 or the village tavern4 ,it is an interesting thought1 that these students will go from this institution back to their low-down homes on the borders of rice fields and cotton plantations1 where their fathers and mothers have toiled in slavery1 and by an inspiration that is divine1 will dissipate the dark memories of the past1 and will show1 by precept and example1 that sanctification of spirit and purity of life will shape the destiny of their race for coming every boy is sent to school at about the same age as your ,american boys1 six or seven4 ,from this time the boy's playing days are over4 ,if the teacher sees or hears that any one has been playing after the school hour1 he would be severely punished4 ,what would your ,american boys think of such treatment8 ,school begins at the first dawning of light1 and closes when we can see to read no more4 ,no intermission is allowed1 excepting for the pupils to go home to get their meals4 ,the first thing in the morning we begin to study the book of ,confucius1 all the pupils studying aloud4 ,we shall have to recite to the teacher very soon4 ,when we go up to recite1 we must hand the book to the teacher and turn our faces from him4 ,this gives no chance to see which word comes next4 ,this is called at present they do not recognize them as fellow-workers in the same societies4 ,some of the extracts given below tell this unpleasant story4 ,all of them1 however1 show that the colored women1 all its dulcet variations1 but the wild threats of deluded wives if their sons or husbands voted for prohibition was a hitherto unheard of wail from the inferno4 ,many an earnest ,atlanta woman dates her re-consecration to the temperance cause from that awful ,saturday night when her frenzied sisters in the public streets joined in the ,bacchanalian revelries over the return of their cruel foe4 ,woman's ,christian ,temperance ,unions at once sprang up in various parts of the city4 ,so much has been done by colored women here1 ,i feel that other ,a4,m4,a4 centres may be encouraged by an account of it4 ,the ,woman's ,christian ,temperance ,union of ,east ,atlanta1 formed in #ahhe1 is an inspiring gathering to visit1 with a membership over fifty1 and the programme of weekly meetings full and interesting4 ,there are three female physicians in the city who cheerfully address the ,union when desired4 ,the pastor of the ,first ,congregational ,church1 once a month1 gives up the mid-week prayer meeting entirely into the hands of this ,union4 ,last week at the close of one of these meetings1 a young man told his sister it was the best prayer meeting he ever attended in his life4 ,the ,temperance ,catechism has been thoroughly taught and illustrated4 ,committees of women are appointed to visit homes and solicit members or attendance on the ,union4 ,at the close of the meetings the women have access to a box of leaflets on social purity1 training of children1 c41 which they read and return4 ,atlanta ,university has a ,y4,w4,c4,t4,u41 composed of over seventy girls in the ,higher ,normal department4 ,i wish our ,northern friends could look into their intelligent faces and watch their eager interest in this work4 ,a committee for visiting the poor reports every week2 the press superintendent reports her work1 and if there is time reads what she sent to the papers2 the social purity superintendent gives a little talk or has something read on the subject2 and the most cheering thing of all is the report from our literature superintendents1 who often report as many as thirty books or leaflets read during the week from our little circulating library4 ,this library cost about five dollars4 ,every officer in all these four ,unions is a ,negro except one4 ,they preside with such intelligence1 grace and dignity1 that our ,southern white pg #bah ladies who
