,,two ,,palaces ,,which ,,form ,,the ,,royal ,,hotel ,,danieli ,in #ahje the second floor of the ,palazzo ,dandolo1 situated in the ,calle delle ,razze1 and fronting on to the ,riva degli ,schiavoni1 was bought by a certain ,dal ,niel1 sur-named ,danieli1 from a member of the families of ,michiel and ,bernardo1 into whose hands it had come1 partly by inheritance and partly by marriages4 ,the new proprietor converted it into an hotel1 giving it his own name--,hotel ,danieli4 ,although the use to which this ,palace1 which once occupied so large a place in the glories of the history of ,venice1 has been put during the present century is very different from that for which it was built1 it has always been kept most worthily1 first by ,danieli1 then by his daughter ,alfonsina1 the wife of ,vespasiano ,muzzarelli1 then by his grand-daughter1 ,giuseppina ,roux1 and last by ,s4,s4 ,genovesi and ,campi2 so that it had the honour1 which it still possesses1 of being chosen by ,emperors1 ,kings1 ,princes1 and ,ambassadors1 and by great men of all countries whose artistic travels bring them to this incomparable city1 so justly called the ,pearl of the ,adriatic4 ,to the honour of the proprietors1 who have succeeded one another in this hotel1 be it said that although1 from time to time1 certain works have been executed in this historic ,palace1 to adapt it to its new use as an hotel1 yet not only have the staircases1 the saloons and the various apartments been preserved just as they were1 but the artistic beauties1 and the historical souvenirs1 have been carefully respected2 the stuccoes and frescoes of the ,x,v,ith and ,x,v,i,ith century have been spared2 and the portraits and heraldic shields of the ,dandolos1 the ,bernardos1 and the ,mocenigos can still be admired today in their original positions4 ,illustration3 ,,panoramas ,,from ,,the ,,balconies ,,of ,,the ,,palazzo ,,dandolo 7,,now ,,hotel ,,royal ,,danieli7 ,illustration3 ,,panoramas ,,from ,,the ,,balconies ,,of ,,the ,,palazzo ,,dandolo 7,,now ,,hotel ,,royal ,,danieli7 ,it will surely be agreeable to the travellers who come to lodge in this remarkable building to know its origin and its history4 ,we propose to give them a rapid sketch of both2 and we believe it will not be uninteresting to them to know that in the halls and chambers they inhabit1 some of the most important acts of the great ,venetian ,republic have been discussed and decided upon2 and that in this ,palace besides ,doges and ,senators1 ,kings and ,ambassadors1 ,alfred de ,musset 7then a fair and charming young man in delicate health7 took up his abode1 in #ahcc1 and ,balzac1 mme ,george ,sand 7who here wrote her novel ,leone ,leoni71 and ,victor ,feuillet1 who1 for his magnificent romance ,l',honntet1 drew his inspiration from ,venetian subjects4 ,but to return to the ancient history of the ,palace 7now ,hotel ,royal ,danieli7 it was built in #adjj1 by one of the ,dandolo families1 but whether by that of the great ,doge1 ,enrico ,dandolo1 is not quite certain4 ,in the ,chronicles of ,malipiero which date from #adeg to #aejj we find the following passage ,today1 the #bhth ,august #adih1 have arrived the ,ambassadors of ,florence1 ,rucellai and ,vespucci2 who are lodged in the ,palazzo ,dandolo1 in the ,calle delle ,razze4 ,we should here remark that the beautiful ,gothic door1 in the ,calle delle ,razze was originally the principle entrance1 and the one on the ,riva degli ,schiavoni has only been opened in recent years for the convenience of travellers4 ,we find confirmation of what has been said as to the date of the ,palace1 and as to the family who built it1 in the ,diary of ,sanudo1 in which he tells us that on the #gth ,april #adih the ,prince of ,salerno came to ,venice4 ,a most brilliant reception was given him1 great festas were held in his honour1 and he1 and his suite of forty-four persons were lodged in the ,dandolo ,palace of the ,calle delle ,razze4 ,sanudo tells us again that in #adii1 this magnificent abode was prepared1 by order of the ,republic1 to receive worthily the ,french ,ambassadors4 ,we could cite many other historical passages proving that this ,palace had belonged to the ,dandolo family1 but one more1 and a very interesting one1 must suffice4 ,in ,sanudo's ,diary we read again ,on the evening of the #ba ,february #aeca the orator ,cesareo1 in the ,palace ,dandolo1 ,calle delle ,razze1 on the quay1 gave a very great feast1 with fireworks concerts1 and illuminated boats1 ,spanish fashion1 on the ,canal of ,st4 ,mark's1 on the occasion of the elevation of the king of ,hungary and ,boemia1 to the dignity of a ,king of the ,romans4 ,this historic ,palace passed from the ,dandolos to the ,gritti family1 in #aecf1 by a deed of sale2 and it is not without interest to note that to distinguish it from others of the same name1 it is called in the deed1 that ,palazzo ,dandolo in which generally abides the ,ambassadors of ,france4 ,illustration3 ,,atrium ,,and ,,ducal ,,stairs ,,in ,,the ,,palazzo ,,dandolo ,after the ,dandolos and the ,grittis1 the ,michiel1 the ,mocenigo and the ,bernardo families became its possessors by marriage1 and they retained it till the beginning of the present century1 when1 as we have said1 its second floor was sold1 by the noble ,dame ,helen ,michiel1 widow of ,alvise ,bernardo to ,dal ,niel4 ,dal ,niel left it to his daughter ,alfonsina ,muzzarelli1 who was able1 in #ahdj to buy the first floor from the noble ,filippo ,nani1 the heir of the ,mocenigos2 and thus the whole building passed to her daughter ,giuseppina ,roux1 and forms the present ,hotel ,royal ,danieli4 ,the interior of this beautiful ,palace we have already described its architecture in ,venetian ,gothic1 and ,sansovino's hand is to be traced in many of its details4 ,it well deserves the reputation that it enjoys of being one of the noblest hotels in the world--indeed its artistic beauties1 and its historic associations1 can only be equalled by its unique and romantic position4 ,mme ,georges ,sand1 who lodged in the hotel in ,may #ahcd1 as she watched from her balcony the sun setting over the enchanting scene spread out before her1 writes in her ,letters of a ,traveller--,the sun had set behind the ,euganean hills1 great purple clouds hung in the sky over ,venice4 ,the tower of ,st ,mark's1 the domes of ,sta4 ,maria1 and the forest of spires and minarets that rise from all parts of ,venice1 were drawn in black outline against the burnished horizon4 ,the sky passed1 by an admirable gradation1 from cherry red to enamelled blue2 and the water1 calm and limpid as a glass1 gave back the exact reflection of this immense iridescence4 ,nearer the town the lagoon was like a vast mirror of bronze4 ,never had ,i seen ,venice so lovely and so fairy-like4 ,to the beauty of a panorama unequalled in the world1 that is spread before the windows of the hotel to its historic associations to the purity and the grandeur of its architecture1 to the ,venetian sumptuousness of its halls and chambers 7including the green saloon of the ,doges7 to the magnificence of its ,atrium and staircase--preserved in its original ,x,vth cent4 condition1 must now be added the important works of restoration and embellishment just completed by the present proprietors who by the aid of clever architects1 artists and decorators1 have studied the means of bringing into requisition all the modern appliances1 in the way of ,steam and ,electricity1 to produce luxury and comfort1 without taking from this interesting ,venetian monument its original character1 which carries the traveller back to the epoch of the ,dandolos1 the ,grittis1 the ,bernardos1 the ,michielis and the ,mocenigos4 ,illustration3 ,,scala ,d',,oro ,,the ,,new ,,york ,,herald 7,european ,edition7 of ,april #adth says3 ,we have pleasure in offering to the readers of the ,,new ,,york ,,herald a few details about this splendid hotel1 which1 because of its ancient history1 its modern additions1 its internal arrangements1 its topografical position at ,venice1 is one of the most interesting hotels in ,italy4 ,we will begin by pointing out the frame is worthy of the picture4 ,among all the cities of the world1 incontestably the most beautiful and the most unique is ,venice--the ,queen of the ,adriatic4 ,venice for the traveler1 for the artist1 for the poet1 is far more interesting than ,naples1 and even than ,rome4 ,the shores of ,naples1 however enchanting1 the monuments of ,rome1 however incomparable1 can be pictured by the imagination even without visiting them1 but ,venice can be comprehended and realized only by seeing it with the eyes and by living its life1 and the more this is done1 the greater becomes the admiration excited4 ,the enchanting mysteries of its canals and of its picturesque streets and calles1 the grandeur of its monuments and of its palaces1 which rise as by enchantment from the limpid water1 the atmosphere of poetry and art which surrounds it1 are not to be described1 or if described present but a faint picture of the reality4 ,this1 then1 being the romantic frame1 the picture as spread out before the windows of the ,palazzo ,dandolo1 now ,royal ,hotel ,danieli1 which stands in the finest part of the ,riva degli ,schiavoni1 is worthy of it1 making an unequalled panorama1 which extends from the ,piazzetta with the ,molo1 the ,columns1 ,st4 ,mark's ,church and the ,doge's ,palace away round to the ,public ,gardens4 ,the front1 which is due south1 faces the broad ,basin of ,st4 ,mark1 dotted with gondolas and boats of all kinds1 and the broad lagoons1 with their treasures and their mysteries4 ,the red church of ,san ,giorgio ,maggiore and the great dome of the ,salute1 reflect themselves in the water to the right1 backed1 in the far distance1 by the blue volcanic hills of ,padua3 while to the left is ,byron's island of ,san ,lazzaro1 and the long low banks of the ,lido that defend ,venice from the waves of the ,adriatic4 ,illustration3 ,,smoking-,,room ,,and ,,american ,,bar ,illustration3 ,,public ,,drawing ,,room ,but the palace itself1 famous in the history of ,venice1 having been built in #adjj by the great family of ,dandolo 7and which is now the ,royal ,hotel ,danieli71 forms an integral part of the picture1 for it is one of the most magnificent palaces of ,venice2 and we shall presently give our readers a historical sketch of it1 which we trust will prove interesting4 ,meanwhile we must mention that to this ancient and sumptuous palace1 with its ,atrium and ,loggia1 with its grand ducal staircase1 its ample reception halls1 its golden stairs1 its rooms decorated with stucco and precious carvings1 its ,sansovino ceiling beams1 its wooden mosaic floors1 and its bifurcated windows and ogival balconies1 which recall the history of ,bianca ,cappello1 has been added a second palace1 equally large and imposing1 but one built on purpose for a hotel4 ,this second building is modern--modern in all its details1 as we shall see in due course4 ,the exterior of these two palaces1 of which the architecture presents a remarkable contrast1 can be admired in the following engraving4 ,the building to the right of the spectator is the modern ,palace1 that on the left the ancient ,dandolo ,palace--each splendid in its own style--and the one in the distance is the famous ,palace of the ,doges4 ,to describe the interior of these two handsome edifices is very difficult1 but the accompanying engraving1 which represents the ,atrium of the ,palazzo ,dandolo1 with its magnificent ducal staircase1 will give some idea of their beauty4 ,around this ,atrium are a number of fine halls and offices1 with the water-gate opening on to a side canal with a marble landing-stage for the gondolas4 ,near to the water-gate is the ,railway ,office 7a convenience possessed by no other hotel in ,venice71 where tickets can be taken and luggage be registered without any trouble to the traveler4 ,next this is the luggage office4 ,opposite the land entrance is the ,porter's ,lodge1 where one or more porters are always to be found at the disposition of travelers4 ,on the left hand is a ,post ,office with1 for the greater security of all correspondence1 a ,government letter-box2 and close by1 the ,bureau of the ,hotel1 with offices for the cashier1 for money changing1 and for ,bank business4 ,opposite the grand stairs is a luxurious ,smoking ,room1 its walls hung with rich material1 and furnished in ,oriental comfort and style1 with an ,american ,bar leading out of it4 ,next it1 are two spacious ,reading and ,writing ,rooms1 containing the principal newspapers and illustrated publications of the world4 ,illustration3 ,,reading ,,room ,on the right hand of the main door is a large ,public ,drawing ,room1 style of #agjj1 with handsome stucco-work1 and gilt furniture covered with rich stuffs1 with the hangings and wall-coverings all en suite4 ,this room alone would repay a visit to the hotel4 ,some idea can be formed of it from the following engravings1 though1 of course1 the full effect of its richness and color is lost4 ,in the two palaces there are a number of other such drawing-rooms1 besides a concert hall1 ballroom1 music room and billiard room1 c4 ,there are also bath rooms and douche baths on every floor4 ,on the ground floor are the kitchens1 the wine cellars1 the ice cellars1 the apparatus for heating the whole buildings by steam1 thus spreading a uniform temperature throughout the two ,palaces4 ,here is also the machinery for the lifts1 the centre for the distribution of the electric light and the boilers and syphons for giving hot water direct into all the apartments4 ,all this deserves being examined from the novelty of the systems employed and from the exquisite order and tidiness which everywhere reigns4 ,we will not describe the bedrooms and sitting rooms1 except to say that they have all been recently done up and richly furnished with the utmost artistic taste and are all lit with electricity4 ,many of the apartments have been preserved in the original style1 especially the ,saloon of the ,doges1 ,no4 #i1 which with the adjoining rooms1 ,nos4 #aj1 #aa and #ab1 all of which overlook the ,riva degli ,schiavoni and the magnificent panorama already described4 ,the wines and the table are a great speciality of the ,hotel ,royal ,danieli1 all being of the very highest order1 and its dining rooms and restaurant arranged with small and separate tables1 have an unusual character all their own4 ,the dining rooms are decorated in an entirely novel style and one that is truly poetic4 ,the great windows of ground glass are transformed into eight lovely winter gardens of rare plants1 which are reproduced in the big mirrors which line the walls1 and the electric light1 which hangs in delicate ,venetian glass lily pendants round the ceiling1 produces a most charming and unusual effect4 ,the two great restaurant halls are furnished in pure style of the ,empire1 for all the stuffs and decorations are copied from the best works that treat of that period1 and are among the richest and choicest of that famous epoch4 ,thus1 by a series of ingenious combinations these two palaces1 so different from each other in many ways1 blend themselves in one harmonious and artistic whole1 and in them are united the greatest luxury with the utmost comfort4 ,illustration3 ,,salon ,,of ,,the ,,doges ,to give an idea of the whole we will imagine that a traveler is staying in the apartment of the ,doge--which recalls all the pomp and grandeur of old ,venice--to go to the breakfast-room and restaurant we will pass through the great ,sansovino ball-room1 then through the ,rose saloon1 by the side of which is the music-room 7style ,empire71 and the gallery of tapestry and majolica1 and thus reaches the ,empire decorated restaurants which we have already described4 ,in the evening at dinner-time the traveler would1 instead1 descend by successive steps1 through a ,renaissance vestibule1 to the beautiful winter garden dining-halls1 which1 especially when lit up by the soft radiance of the electric lilies1 makes a perfect fairy scene4 ,round the ball-room on the first floor runs an uncovered loggia1 from whence one can look down into the court of honor1 or ,venetian ,atrium1 in which of an evening characteristic concerts are frequently given4 ,from the first floor the great scala d'oro conducts one to the second floor1 where are the spacious concert-room and various handsome suites of ancient and modern apartments4 ,to the honor of the proprietors who have succeeded one another1 be it said1 that although from time to time certain works have been executed in this historic palace to adapt it to its new use as a hotel1 yet not only have the staircases1 the saloons and the various apartments been preserved just as they were1 but the artistic beauties and the historic souvenirs have been carefully respected1 the stuccoes and frescoes of the sixteenth and seventeenth century have been spared1 and the portraits and heraldic shields of the ,dandolos1 the ,bernardos and the ,mocenigos can still be admired to-day in their original positions4 ,although the use to which this ,palace1 which once occupied so large a place in the glories of the history of ,venice1 has been put during the present century is very different from that which it was built1 it has always been kept most worthily1 first by ,danieli1 then by his daughter ,alfonsina1 the wife of ,vespasiano ,muzzarelli2 then by his granddaughter1 ,giuseppina ,roux1 and1 last1 by ,s4,s4 ,genovesi and ,campi1 so that it had the honor1 which it still possesses1 of being chosen by ,emperors1 ,kings1 ,princes and ,ambassadors1 and by great men of all countries whose artistic travels bring them to this incomparable city1 so justly called the ,pearl of the ,adriatic4 ,the delightful impression made on those who inhabit the ,hotel ,royal ,danieli has been expressed over and over again to their friends1 and they have often said to the proprietors that they have rather felt as if visiting in the house of a friend1 or in a princely mansion1 than in an hotel1 even though in the greatest hotel in the world4 ,illustration3 ,,sansovino ,,hall ,in this lovely palace the traveler feels at home4 ,all is artistic and poetical4 ,no long passages1 painted in imitation marble1 cold and draughty1 and dreary6 ,no long endless tables and big red velvet divans1 as in a cafe6 ,no long rows of rooms in which the furniture is so much alike that you cannot tell if you are in your own room or someone else's6 ,here is nothing conventional1 nothing that is to be seen everywhere--whether among the mountains of ,switzerland or on the boulevards of ,paris1 and which makes the traveler's life monotonous wherever he may be4 ,here1 on the contrary1 he finds himself in an atmosphere of home1 of comfort1 and of suitability to his position1 however exalted that may be1 and one in keeping with his romantic surroundings4 ,this has been the aim of those who have directed the decorations of the ,hotel ,royal ,danieli1 and they are happy in the thought that they have succeeded to the satisfaction of the visitors4 ,to sum up4 ,the ,hotel ,royal ,danieli1 now entirely restored and embellished from ground to roof and decorated by the best ,venetian artists1 arranged with all the most modern appliances for comfort1 can offer the following conveniences as to render the ,hotel ,royal ,danieli the most comfortable1 the most artistic and the most aristocratic hotel in ,europe1 yet they have in nothing augmented the prices1 but have retained those moderate rates which have helped to render the ,hotel ,danieli so famous4 99 99 99 99 99 ,nota bene--,the ancient ,palazzo ,dandolo1 now ,hotel ,royal ,danieli1 and all its internal arrangements1 deserves a special visit from travelers who are sojourning in ,venice1 and the proprietors will be most happy to show the palace to all interested in the sights of ,venice1 whether they are resident
