deeper than all this4 ,they reach the mind and heart4 ,as ,christ aimed not so much at once to tear down or build up the outer1 but to reach the inner springs of the soul1 so these workers aim to make character1 intelligent1 pure1 active1 and thus to impel to all that is noble and honest in life1 that stimulates to industry1 economy1 thrift--to making the home pure and all outer things prosperous and right4 ,but1 as ,christ was misunderstood and rejected1 so are these laborers ostracized4 ,we rejoice to find a growing recognition of their worth and work1 and trust that the day is coming when are engaged in their devoted and self-denying labors in the ,south1 have been compelled by the nature of our work to take their summer vacations4 ,the educational work of the ,american ,missionary ,association is through and through a missionary work4 ,it is begun with a missionary purpose and is carried on in the name of ,christ to disciple the people1 that they may know ,him who is the ,way1 the ,truth and the ,life4 ,all of our teachers are sent to be missionaries4 ,many are returning now to their fields of service with which they are well acquainted1 and some are going for the first to be missionaries should have a deep love for ,christ1 a full grasp of ,his plan of salvation1 and be wholly consecrated1 in their inward lives1 to ,him4 ,mission work is not preaching grand sermons1 or witnessing marvellous baptisms2 it is a patient ,christ-like life1 day by day1 far from external help1 far from those we love2 a quiet sowing of tiny seeds1 which may take long years to show above the ground1 combined with a steady bearing of loneliness1 discomfort and petty persecution4 ,the work demands of every worker very real and manifest self-sacrifice and acts of faith4 ,it aims at1 and ought to be satisfied with1 nothing less than the conversion of the people to ,god4 ,not witness-bearing merely1 but fruit-bearing is the end in view4 ,anything short of the salvation of souls is failure4 ,it is generally found that when people are of no use at home1 they are of no use in the mission field4 ,the bright1 brave1 earnest spirit1 ready to face difficulties at home1 is the right spirit for the work abroad4 ,a patient1 persevering1 plodding spirit1 attempting great things for ,god1 and expecting great things from ,god1 is absolutely essential to success in missionary efforts4 ,those will not make the best missionaries who are easily daunted by the first difficulty or opposition1 but those whose strength is equal to waiting upon ,god1 and who fight through all obstacles by prayer and faith4 ,the spasmodic worker1 frantic in zeal one month1 and at freezing-point another1 will be weary long before the station has been reached3 while in the strength of ,christ the weakest of us need not draw back1 nor say1 ,i am not fit1 yet nothing less than burning love to ,christ1 and in ,him to perishing souls1 will survive and overleap the difficulties and disappointments of the work4 ,these are royal words1 and we believe that our teachers and missionaries engaged in this most glorious work of saving needy souls will take with them this spirit1 and be blessed in the communication of their blessing to others4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,immigrants ,,and ,,negroes4 ,the ,immigrant question challenges attention4 ,shall immigrants be welcomed1 restricted or prohibited8 ,in the early days of the ,republic1 when the revolutionary war had welded the people together and our boundless territory begged for occupancy1 we welcomed the oppressed of all nations4 ,later1 the welcome has been responded to by such a rushing1 heterogeneous and even dangerous mass that we are compelled to pause4 ,restriction is talked of1 but the line of discrimination is hard to be fixed4 ,no committee at ,castle ,garden can detect anarchists1 criminals1 or even the poor1 if that line should be chosen4 ,prohibition--exclusion is talked of--nay1 is enacted stringently against the ,chinese4 ,if need be1 it may extend to all4 ,so there is a way of averting this evil4 ,but the ,negro question cannot be put away4 ,the ,negroes are here4 ,they outnumber the immigrants that have come to our shores in the last thirty years1 and have a foothold upon the soil as valid as the ,aryan race1 whether we consider the date of their coming or the labor they have put upon the land4 ,there is a strange disposition to shrink from the ,negro question4 ,some avoid it by flippantly denying the danger2 others turn from it because they are appalled by it4 ,thus an able writer on ,immigration in a recent number of the ,century passes the topic with this awe-stricken remark3 ,this problem 7of the ,negro7 cannot be touched practically2 ancient wrongs bind the nation hand and foot1 and its outcome must be awaited as we await the gathering of the tempest--powerless to avert1 and trembling over the steady approach 7,the italics are ours47 ,this is not wise2 it is not manly4 ,why try to avert the evils of immigration1 or any other1 if we are meanwhile only to await tremblingly the doom that is to come on us from the conflict with the ,negro8 ,there is a strong disposition to gather hope from the newly-developed manufacturing interests in the ,south4 ,but this is delusive4 ,the ,south is essentially a rural population2 the new industries will necessarily be confined to a few localities1 and will reach but slightly the wide agricultural region1 and will scarcely touch the ,negroes4 ,and more than all this1 these industries will only be importing into the ,south the struggle between labor and capital1 which so vexes us at the ,north4 ,instead1 therefore1 of solving the old difficulties at the ,south1 they will add a new one4 ,the danger of a war of races is scouted at the ,north2 it is not at the ,south4 ,this is natural4 ,the ,north is not in immediate contact with the danger2 the ,south is4 ,when the war of the rebellion was impending1 the ,north refused to believe in its coming2 and when it came1 one of the wisest statesmen of the ,north1 ,mr4 ,seward1 predicted that it would not last sixty days4 ,no such delusion prevailed in the ,south4 ,many of the best men there1 nay1 nearly all the border ,states1 dreaded its coming and held back as long as possible1 but they were swept into the flood they foresaw and could not avert4 ,thoughtful men at the ,south now have no rose-colored views about the ,negro problem4 ,they fear the impending conflict4 ,with them the supremacy of the white race is the settled point1 but they see in the growing numbers1 intelligence and restlessness of the ,negroes an increasing danger that will only be aggravated by delay4 ,why should not the ,north and ,south alike manfully face the question of a war of races8 ,what will it mean8 ,what will be its end8 ,if the whites and the blacks of the ,south alone engage in it1 the blacks will be exterminated4 ,nothing less will meet the case4 ,if the ,north mingle in the struggle1 it must be to help the whites or the blacks4 ,if to help the whites1 that will mean the more rapid defeat and slaughter of the blacks2 if the ,north help the blacks and save them from destruction1 then we shall be worse off than we are now1 the two races will be together with enmities aroused a thousand fold6 ,but why not face the more hopeful question3 ,is there a remedy8 ,there is6 ,the teacher and the preacher1 the spelling-book and the ,bible1 the saviours of men1 the reformers of society1 the uplifters of races1 are spreading over the ,south4 ,they go to the manufacturing towns--the ,birminghams and the ,annistons--they go to the large cities with their common and normal schools1 their medical1 law and theological seminaries4 ,when the pupils become teachers1 they go into the smaller towns1 they go into the rural districts1 on the small farms1 everywhere instructing1 encouraging and stimulating the people1 leading them to more intelligent industries1 to economy1 to the purchase of land1 the erection of better houses1 to a higher aim in life1 and to the formation of a right character4 ,of such stuff men are made1 citizens1 ,christians2 men who can use the ballot1 who own property that must be protected by the ballot2 men who have homes that must be refined and pure1 churches where ,god is worshipped intelligently and where a practical morality is taught and attained4 ,such a people will be safe1 for they will be bone and muscle of the ,south1 they will be needed in its wide expanse of fertile soil1 needed in its practical trades1 needed for the accumulated wealth1 intelligence and cultivated piety they will bring into all the walks and avocations of life4 ,but it will be some time before these educational and religious means reach all the blacks1 and in the meantime much patience and toil will be needed4 ,to the blacks we would say3 ,you won the admiration of men and the blessing of ,god by your patience under the yoke of slavery when there seemed to be no hope2 now win both again by bearing in like spirit your lesser present ills1 while hope dawns and help is near4 ,to thoughtful men ,north and ,south we urge3 ,take hold of this work like men4 ,if a thousandth part of the self-sacrifice and money spent in the war were devoted to this work1 the evil might be averted4 ,why stand over-awed at a threatened flood that if met in description1 the simple yet thrilling narrative1 which held us spell-bound to the last chapters of ,among the ,pines4 ,our limited space does not permit an extended review of these volumes4 ,we only call attention to them here because they touch upon great missionary problems1 and throw a flood of light upon these interesting ,mountain people among whom the ,a4,m4,a4 has so extensive and important a work4 ,the first of these volumes in chronological order is the ,rear ,guard of the ,revolution4 ,the colony of the ,mountain people in the ,watauga ,valley1 led by ,john ,sevier and ,james ,robertson and ,isaac ,shelby1 constituted this rear guard4 ,no better blood ever mingled in the veins of a people than that which flows in this ,mountain people4 ,french ,huguenot1 ,scotch-,irish ,presbyterian and ,welsh ,presbyterian were their ancestors4 ,with such leadership as these three men furnished1 the early ,mountain colonists ought to have been heroes1 and they were4 ,in the author's own words1 ,these three men1 ,john ,sevier1 ,james ,robertson and ,isaac ,shelby1 99 99 99 were like ,washington and ,lincoln1 'providential men4' ,they marched neither to the sound after a brief absence he returns to his home1 and his wife eagerly asks ,what did you do with him8 ,oh1 we hung him1 ,betty1 that's all4 ,these early settlers did not immediately plant churches and school-houses1 as the settlers of ,new ,england did4 ,still they were not altogether illiterate4 ,a public document still in existence has the signature of #aab out of #aad of their number who signed the paper1 two only making their ,x4 ,in #aggi1 the first ,court ,house was built at ,jonesboro4 ,at about the same date1 the author informs us1 ,the school mistress was to be found at nearly every cross-road in the older settlements4 ,she occupied a small log-house1 generally about sixteen feet square1 and often without floor or windows4 ,the author might have added that she1 or one like her1 in ,india1 says that among the people to whom they have gone they have built up the most complete confidence and implicit faith in the purity and unselfishness of their motives4 ,he declares that he regards the missionary work of the ,english as an expiation for wrong-doing1 and he believes that the missionary instinct forms the necessary spiritual complement of the aggressive genius of the ,english race4 ,sir ,william also claims that the advance of missionaries in the good opinion of non-,christian peoples is a most striking evidence of their high character and intelligence1 and that no class of ,englishmen has done so much to make ,england respected in ,india as the missionaries1 that no class has done so much to awaken the ,indian's intellect and to lessen the dangers of transition from the old state of things to the new4 ,after this much of condensation of that profound article by the ,christian ,union1 we quote from the author3 ,the careless onlooker may have no particular convictions on the subject1 and flippant persons may ridicule religious effort in ,india as elsewhere4 ,but ,i think that few ,indian administrators have passed through high office1 and had to deal with the ultimate problems of ,british government in that country1 without feeling the value of the work done by missionaries4 ,such men gradually realize1 as ,i have realized1 that the missionaries do really represent the spiritual side of the new civilization1 and of the new life which we are introducing into ,india4 ,names and places being changed1 it is coming to appear that the whole of this can be said of the ,christian workers from the ,north among the colored people of the ,south4 ,besides all of their work that can be told by statistics1 and besides all of that in building up character among the ,negroes and awakening their intellect and their aspiration for thrift in every sense1 they have exerted a profound unconscious influence upon the white people of that ,southland4 ,they1 too1 have built up among the whites a confidence in the purity and unselfishness of their motives4 ,at first they were suspected as emissaries of a political party4 ,by many even of the best people there they were held as necessarily persons of low-down condition and character to be willing to do that low-down work4 ,with our views of the case1 how could we believe anything else8 was the answer to the remonstrance against the current mode of treatment4 ,gradually this feeling has been giving way to one of growing confidence1 until for several years such men as ,rev4 ,dr4 ,a4,g4 ,haygood and ,mr4 ,g4,w4 ,cable1 and such papers as the ,memphis ,appeal1 and such a ,state ,board of ,examiners as that of the ,atlanta ,university have been publicly declaring the high intellectual quality and moral standing of these once despised teachers1 while many of the most respectable citizens are privately saying the same thing1 and multitudes believe it1 though making no announcement of the same4 ,by this crucifixion of feeling through which those workers have passed1 and by their self-denying endurance of hardness1 they too1 in no small sense1 have been making expiation for the wrongs done the slaves4 ,their missionary instinct also forms the necessary spiritual complement of the aggressive genius of the ,puritan civilization which is now taking possession where its sword had cleared the way4 ,their advance in the good opinion of the best people of the ,south is also a striking evidence of their high character and intelligence4 ,no class of ,northern people going ,south have done so much to make the ,north respected as the missionaries1 and none are doing more to lessen the danger of transition from the old state of things to the new4 ,going1 not no wish to stir up strife by recalling memories of the past1 or by giving incidents of recent aggression against the helpless4 ,but this case in ,marion is free from bloody details and is a simple illustration of the determination of the white people to maintain their sway in the ,south4 ,the simple facts in the case are1 that in ,crittenden ,county1 ,arkansas1 of which ,marion is the county town1 the population is chiefly colored1 the ratio being seven negroes to one white man4 ,for several years the office of ,judge of the ,county and ,probate ,court1 and the ,clerk and under officers of the court1 were colored men4 ,the more important county offices were held by white men4 ,on a given day1 fifty or more heavily-armed white men appeared at the county seat and drove from their offices and homes the colored officers named above1 together with the colored local doctor1 the lawyer1 the schoolmaster of the colored school1 the editor of the colored newspaper and a number of ,,imes4 ,from the bluff at ,memphis we look across the river1 where along the western shore stretch the forests of ,crittenden ,county1 ,arkansas1 and ,marion1 about fourteen miles from ,memphis1 is the county-seat4 ,the story of the recent banishment of fifteen prominent colored office-holders1 professional men and farmers has gone to the world4 ,the whites1 well armed1 took their game by surprise1 bagged and shipped it without bloodshed4 ,now the empire is peace they say1 although for a time terror reigned among the startled colored people4 ,with a ,negro population six or seven times as large as the white1 it is not strange that the ,county ,court ,judge1 the ,county ,clerk and his deputy should be ,negroes1 nor that they should aspire to other places in public life4 ,unfortunately1 as all witnesses agree1 ,judge ,lewis and ,clerk ,ferguson were given to drinking habits1 which brought them under accusation before the courts for drunkenness4 ,it was probable that they would have been convicted2 but without awaiting the tardiness of the law1 a shorter process was found4 ,in palliation of their hasty banishment it is claimed that anonymous letters were sent to some of the leading white citizens1 warning them to leave the county4 ,these letters it is asserted--not proved--must have proceeded from ,clerk ,ferguson's office1 although not written by himself4 ,the object was to intimidate those who would be most efficient in convicting and deposing the unworthy officials4 ,furthermore1 there are two opposing factions of colored ,baptists at ,marion1 and it is surmised that one of these factions1 regarding these prominent characters as their enemies1 had something to do with the letter-writing in order to bring down wrath upon them4 ,still another theory is1 that the whites have only been awaiting their chance1 and taking advantage of favorable conditions1 knew when and whence the said letters would be issued4 ,it was all arranged beforehand4 ,at all events1 the time was very short1 after the delivery of the letters1 until ,winchester rifles and shot-guns were in the hands of some scores of white citizens1 and fifteen ,negro men1 including ,lewis and ,ferguson1 ,york ,byers1 a deputy sheriff and well-to-do farmer1 ,dr4 ,stith1 a successful young physician1 and others1 were speedily sent across the river to ,memphis4 ,clerk ,ferguson found himself surrounded by a squad of these brave men1 who1 with rifles presented1 demanded that he sign without ceremony a resignation4 ,he signed4 ,byers escaped through the swamps1 made his way to the river1 and came to ,memphis in a sorry plight4 ,the other victims were put upon the train with orders to go and never return4 ,byers was to be violently dealt with1 had they caught him4 ,sandy ,s4 ,odom1 living on his farm about six miles from ,marion1 ,i am informed1 refused to leave his home1 when waited upon and ordered to go4 ,said he4 ,all ,i have is here--wife1 child and farm--,i can't go away4 ,for a time his pluck seemed to be respected4 ,his fault was that of being a friend of the ,marion officials4 ,he had once served at ,little ,rock as a legislator from his district1 but1 like ,cincinnatus1 had since resumed the plow4 ,according to the latest by the ,memphis ,appeal1 ,odom has decided that discretion is the better part of valor1 and will be off for a safer place as soon as his business affairs can be arranged4 ,the ,governor of ,arkansas has refused to interfere1 because the ,circuit ,court ,judge at ,marion has solemnly charged the grand jury as to their duty toward the writers of threatening letters1 and also toward those who unlawfully drove citizens from their homes1 etc4 ,but this solemn part of the proceeding was enacted1 in spite of the fact that the sheriff of ,crittenden ,county was one of the leading spirits in the outrage upon the defenceless black men1 and the judge and grand jury and all ,crittendon ,county are far from expecting to hear of any white man being arrested4 ,but last ,sunday1 ,dr4 ,stith1 one of the exiles1 went back to ,marion on the morning train4 ,he had heard that his wife was sick1 and he said3 ,if ,i am a man ,i must go to her4 ,he was promptly arrested by the patrol force at ,marion and lodged in jail1 where he is likely to remain until next ,january meeting of court before he can have a trial4 ,there is nothing brought against him aside from his having been once associated with the offensive partisans4 ,he had at one time been an active politician1 but more recently has devoted himself to his profession1 and was already known as a successful physician4 ,like ,odom1 his character is not assailed3 but he was educated1 and influential among the people4 ,two young ladies1 teachers from ,memphis1 one of whom had taught last year at ,marion1 went thither soon after ,dr4 ,stith's arrest1 to make inquiry about a situation for teaching4 ,they were closely watched1 and in an interview were warned by a reporter of the ,memphis ,appeal that it was not safe for them to remain in ,marion4 ,they had reason to think that they were being watched as spies in the interest of the banished2 hence their stay was very brief4 ,when the ,clerk ,ferguson had vacated1 a white citizen was at once put into that office4 ,it is a remarkable fact that1 aside from a few hints about the necessity of maintaining order and proceeding according to law1 the general tone of the press here is to the effect that this occurrence1 though unfortunate on account of its effect at the ,north1 was really justifiable4 ,the cruel wrong inflicted upon those who have no crime laid to their charge1 no personal reproach of character1 is treated as though it were but little more than a joke4 ,if the two officials were guilty of drunkenness no one doubts that they could have been legally removed from office4 ,if the colored people at ,marion are divided into factions1 then the whites could the more easily combine forces against the officials in question1 or any political ring which may have existed4 ,but there was a general ,negro uprising threatened1 and in order to save their own lives the whites made haste to get into the field first4 ,this is the avowed excuse4 ,but it is certain that no one believes there was serious danger of a ,negro uprising4 ,the men arrested and banished were unarmed1 and taken by surprise4 ,if they were in any sense desperate or dangerous characters they turned cowards suddenly1 making no resistance4 ,indeed1 there is but one excuse for their bloodless surrender4 ,they display to the world the utter groundlessness of the charge of a conspiracy4 ,no dynamite bombs1 no loaded weapons1 no evidence of organized bands were discovered4 ,in all the history of the shot-gun policy and the unnumbered outrages committed1 there are on record few1 if any1 cases of conspiracy against life and property on the part of the ,negro4 ,but the true animus of the ,crittenden ,county affair1 ,i think1 is found in the current declaration which is used at ,marion on the part of the brave men who drove out these exiles1 viz43 ,we don't want any educated niggers1 and won't have 'em here1 not even to teach school4 ,it should not be overlooked1 that in this instance there is fully revealed that singular idea which so widely prevails at the ,south1 viz43 ,a ,negro is in his place only and always as a subordinate4 ,it is assumed that to educate him unfits him for his mission in life1 unless that education looks simply to some hand service4 ,with this fact before us1 we can explain the dead silence of the pulpit and the press of the ,south as touching the first principles of justice4 ,the end justifies the means when ,negro rule is to be prevented1 and to protest against this bold subversion of the great principles of citizenship in the ,republic1 is to wave the bloody shirt4 ,we will admit that it is by no means desirable that a mass of illiterate people should hold sway1 but we claim that the ,southern white people can break the color line if they will1 by admitting frankly the rights of the ,negro1 and by encouraging him to aspire to an intelligent and worthy manhood4 99 supposed by ,protestants that the grand ceremonials1 the gaudy vestments1 the music1 and especially the welcome which the ,papal ,church was said to give to all men irrespective of riches1 race or color1 would attract the ,freedmen4 ,but the expectation was not met2 the ,freedmen were not attracted1 and soon the special efforts seemed to cease4 ,but ,rome never surrenders1 and those efforts may now be resumed4 ,we invite attention to the two articles4 ,from ,,the ,,christian4 ,romanism is spreading among the colored people of the ,american ,continent1 and it is said that several ,negroes are now in training in ,rome and elsewhere to become priests4 ,the ,american ,roman ,catholic papers say that the cause is not far to seek1 the ,roman ,catholic ,church being 'the only one on this continent offering the ,negro communion on terms of equality4' ,if this is not true all round1 it certainly is the fact that outbreaks of the so-called 'color-prejudice' have been of but rare occurrence among the ,romanists1 and that they are apparently reaping the result in a large accession of numbers4 ,from ,,the ,,negro ,,american4 ,few persons are aware of the rapid spread of ,catholicism among the colored people of this country4 ,from the ,american ,catholic ,tribune1 the organ of the colored ,catholics of ,america1 we obtain facts that are truly startling4 ,young colored men are now in ,rome and in the ,catholic schools and colleges of the ,united ,states1 preparing for work among their people in ,america1 and ,africa as well1 while to-day missionaries are everywhere busy1 sowing the seeds of ,catholic belief and worship4 ,these teachings are eagerly accepted by the colored people4 ,the cause of this success among them is not far to seek4 ,the ,catholic ,church1 of all which are ruled by whites on this continent1 is the only one offering the ,negro communion on terms of equality4 ,while the ,southern ,protestants are setting up separate synods1 councils1 presbyteries and conferences for the ,negro1 and the ,y4,m4,c4,a41 with the same narrow spirit1 is refusing colored men seats in its councils1 while ,northern ,protestants are either neutral in this matter of caste or only half-hearted in crying down upon the sin of it2 the ,catholics alone have accepted in a full and liberal sense the command1 preach my gospel to every creature1 and have extended fellowship to all1 regardless of race1 color or condition4 ,it matters not what their motive is4 ,the fact stands boldly out4 ,true1 instances are occurring of outbreaks of color-prejudice among the ,catholics1 but the policy of the church is openly and boldly against discrimination of whatever sort among its members4 ,the fear of social equality1 that shadow of a something that never did1 and never can1 exist1 that bug-bear of illiberal minds and narrow culture1 does not stand guard at the doors of this church to drive away the colored worshipper or compel him to sit at the second table at the ,lord's feast4 ,is it to be wondered at1 then1 that the colored people are flocking to the ,catholic fold8 ,this they will continue to do1 so long as the spirit of caste dictates the colored people and learns them and their surroundings1 the more difficult seems the solution of the negro problem4 ,tourists in the ,south and people at a distance are very prolific in suggestions as to the best methods for elevating the negro4 ,why6 visitors who have spent hardly twenty-four hours in a ,southern city can write home marvellous letters as to the wonderful progress of the colored race1 and prophesy a speedy settlement of the matter of negro education and race prejudice4 ,it is a fact1 however1 that the longer one stays here the more puzzled he grows about these matters4 ,an old ,a4,m4,a4 worker said to me1 ,the first year of your work you will think you understand the colored people pretty well2 the second year you won't know quite so much2 the third year still less1 and so on until by the tenth year you will think you don't know anything about them4 ,but we all come to one conclusion1 that all the trouble arising from race prejudice will pass away as the negro rises4 ,when he is able to intelligently exercise all his rights1 then the white man will have to acknowledge them4 ,this result is in the distance1 and while due attention is given to the older ones1 yet the destiny of the colored race is wrapt up in the rising generation4 ,they are terribly endangered1 but they must be saved if the race is saved4 ,a new generation1 who knew nothing of slavery but much of the dangers of freedom1 are taking hold upon manhood4 ,they must be taught to read1 to think1 to work1 to save and to love goodness for its own sake4 ,if all this can be brought about ,i interesting class of speakers--some of them from distant mission fields4 ,they show how broad and many-sided is ,mr4 ,moody's mind and heart4 ,at the meeting held ,august #hth1 ,rev4 ,c4,w4 ,shelton1 the ,financial ,secretary for ,indian ,missions of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 was invited to address the meeting4 ,we condense from the ,springfield ,union an outline of ,mr4 ,shelton's stirring address1 and its effect upon ,mr4 ,moody and others in attendance1 with the practical results4 ,the most stirring address of the morning was delivered by ,rev4 ,chas4 ,w4 ,shelton of ,new ,york ,city1 on the ,indian problem4 ,he stated the problem with simplicity and dignity1 but when he got worked into his theme1 he became eloquent in his description of the position of the ,indian people and their strong desire to receive the gospel4 ,while he was illustrating his argument with pathetic incidents in his experience1 there were many of his audience in tears4 ,the speaker described the ,indians themselves2 their first characteristic was the deep religious nature which swayed their whole life4 ,they prayed oftener and more fervently than ,christians1 worshipping everything that was unknown and mysterious2 of which the saddest thing was that the ,indian's gods were all gods of anger1 involving sacrifices4 ,to show the extent to which the ,indians would sacrifice themselves to appease their god's anger1 a very touching story was told of a boy torturing himself for the recovery of his sick mother4 ,at the close of the ,mohonk ,conference1 two years ago1 our committee went to ,president ,cleveland to petition in regard to methods4 ,he said that he sympathized with all our methods and ideas4 ,but1 he said1 gentlemen1 you may do all you can at ,mohonk1 ,i may do all ,i can here in the ,white ,house1 and ,congress may do all that they can over there1 but1 and he turned and picked up a ,bible1 gentlemen1 after all1 that book has got to settle the ,indian problem4 7,applause47 ,and the ,president was right4 ,before you can do anything for the preservation of the ,indian you've got to give him a new hope1 a new salvation4 ,i have studied many tribes1 and have never found a tribe or village of ,indians or a single ,indian civilized before he was ,christianized4 ,the speaker next considered the question whether the ,christianization of the ,indians was possible4 ,this he answered by the case of the #djj ,indians taken captive in the ,sioux war which followed the ,minnesota massacre of #ahfb4 ,in the fall of that year1 a missionary went to their prison1 and in the next six months taught #cib to read and established a church with #bie members4 ,subsequently ,president ,lincoln pardoned all but #ci and the survivors went among the ,sioux1 and the speaker considered the ten ,christian churches and #b1jjj ,christians among the #dj1jjj ,sioux to be owing to this church of prisoners4 ,in ,dakota1 every one of the #dj1jjj ,indians was ready to receive the gospel4 ,on ,mr4 ,moody's asking how much he wanted1 he said that it took #djj to start a station1 and #cjj a year to keep it up4 ,he then related a very pathetic story of an old ,indian who traveled #aej miles across the ,territory seven times to get a missionary sent among his people4 ,the difficulty in getting one arose from the society sending the missionaries1 whose debt was so large that the executive board had refused to send out any more4 7,board wants more faith1 put in ,mr4 ,moody47 ,the old man finally went back to his people1 saying sadly3 ,they must die in their darkness2 the ,christian people of ,america haven't interest enough in the poor dying ,indian to try and help him4 ,mr4 ,moody1 who had been apparently deep in thought ever since the speaker had mentioned the sum necessary to start a station1 now broke out1 ,got a mission started where that old man wanted it8 in such an earnest way that it brought down the house4 ,but ,mr4 ,moody wasn't satisfied till ,mr4 ,shelton answered in the affirmative1 and added that what he said of the ,sioux was true of the other tribes1 #fh of whom were untouched by any missionary efforts4 ,at this point1 #cjj was handed to the platform to establish a station1 and the audience grew enthusiastic4 ,the speaker continued1 illustrating the need of ,christian work among the ,indians and their willingness to receive it by telling a story of a little ,indian girl who was converted while dying4 ,she asked of her teacher3 ,but1 lady1 how long have you known of this beautiful story8 ,many years1 replied the missionary4 ,and how long has white man known of this8 ,oh1 very many years4 ,lady1 if white man has known about ,god and about heaven so long1 what for1 why has he not told poor dying ,indian about this before8 ,if ,i could only get well1 ,i would go and tell all my people this beautiful story about ,jesus and home1 and with those words1 ,jesus and home1 her eyes closed forever4 ,in answer to ,mr4 ,moody's questions1 he described the stations1 little buildings of three rooms1 and the missionaries' life1 at home1 and teaching the ,indians to cultivate the soil1 as well as preaching to them2 his wife also teaching the women4 ,the audience had become quite enthusiastic by the time he finished his eloquent appeal1 and at this moment ,mr4 ,sankey offered #gjj to start one station1 and shortly after ,mr4 ,moody pledged an equal amount4 ,a lady then handed in #djj to go with the #cjj subscribed during the address4 ,mr4 ,moody himself then made a brief appeal1 speaking of the ,indian boys and girls in his school and the high rank they had taken4 ,he offered a short prayer and then dismissed the audience1 telling ,mr4 ,shelton to make himself plenty around the buildings during the afternoon1 and doubtless he would receive more money4 ,mr4 ,shelton did make himself plenty around the building1 and the result has been that nearly #c1jjj were contributed either in cash or in pledges that have since been redeemed4 ,still other contributions are anticipated as the outcome of this fine address4 ,three out-stations will be started at once in ,dakota1 one of them bearing the helpers--,hong ,sing4 ,a very little man he is1 in bodily presence weak and in speech1 for lack of lungs1 sometimes of no account4 ,yet1 though near-sighted almost to blindness1 and though often sick and always weary1 in the intervals of work as a house-servant he gained what seemed to me a remarkable knowledge of the truth as it is in ,jesus4 ,the ,bible was 7and still is1 ,i doubt not7 his unfailing companion1 and its study his choicest rest4 ,several years ago1 his health became so precarious that he decided to return to his native land4 ,a letter from him1 under date of ,san ,ning word all the time1 go among the bad women all the time4 ,so this attests that they do not obey ,confucius1 but disobey and dishonor him4 ,once we do like the same1 but since we found ,jesus and believe he is our ,saviour1 we stop to speak the bad word1 stopped to gamble and smoke opium4 ,very seldom ,i hear or see those who study ,confucius do as the ,jesus men1 for these are they that obey ,confucius doctrine and keep his word4 ,why cannot those disciples of ,confucius be better men8 ,ah1 ,confucius only a good man1 he can only tell you the way how to be good man1 but he has no power to change your heart1 and ,jesus can if we trust in him4 ,this ,i know1 for before ,i found ,jesus ,i was always swearing and use the bad language1 but since ,i believe in ,jesus and confess my sins and ask him to forgive1 ,i know that he has helped me to keep away from all vice and has converted my heart that ,i might be a better man4 ,therefore our ,confucius was a man1 but ,jesus is ,god4' ,another question they asked me3 ',you say1 whenever you pray to ,god1 ,god is there4 ,suppose you go to the stable to pray1 do you think ,god was there--such a dirty place--and hear your prayer8' ,i answer1 ',yes1 for ,god is everywhere4 ,and though we call the place a dirty place1 the heart that prays may be clean4 ,you see the sun rise in the sky1 its beams shine over all the world2 ,god's eye the same1 not only see over the world but all through our hearts4' ,mr4 ,hager 7,missionary of the ,american ,board in ,south ,china7 has opened a school in our district1 so that ,i found a good opportunity to speak in the name of ,jesus4 ,the seed was sown into their ears1 but ,i do not know what the hardest will be4 ,i have also received a brief but interesting note from another of our former helpers--,wong ,ock--a man of great fervency of spirit and a diligent student of the ,word4 ,years ago he joined the ,salvation ,army and was sent to ,london to be trained for ,army work in ,china4 ,we had lost sight of him1 till this letter came4 ,though not connected with the ,army he is busy in ,christian work1 preaching in one of the ,gospel ,halls in ,hong ,kong under direction of ,dr4 ,ernest ,j4 ,eitel4 ,for some time before he left ,california he declined to receive any salary as a helper1 believing that the ,lord would provide1 and he is working still upon this principle1 and not without fruit4 ,a note from ,dr4 ,eitel speaks of one of ,wong ,ock's hearers offering himself for baptism1 though the work had been in operation but three weeks4 ,in anticipation of the confirmation of the new treaty1 the ,chinese are crowding upon us in larger numbers than at any time before for several years4 ,by hook or by crook they get in1 finding no lack of ,american lawyers ready to smooth their way1 and when one opening in the ,restriction ,act is closed to seek or make another4 ,if well-supported rumors are to be believed1 even customs-officials have not always been
