a warm heart4 ,the house1 or rather the range of houses1 is picturesque1 and the walks among the hills and down the rocky gorges1 and the forty miles of excellent roads1 give the widest scope for walking and driving4 ,the ,conference is the invention of ,mr4 ,smiley4 ,to it1 he invites annually a hundred or more guests1 giving them the freedom of the house2 and three days are spent in the discussion of ,indian affairs1 interspersed with afternoon drives amid the striking scenery4 ,the invitation is extended to those who are supposed to be intelligently interested in the ,indians2 but within that limit there is the freest range--men and women of all political parties and of all religious denominations being included4 ,the acts of the ,conference1 like the utterances of a ,congregational ,council1 have only the authority of the reason that is in them2 yet it is wonderful what an influence this peculiar body has had on public sentiment4 ,its utterances have been discussed and have had their weight in the pulpit1 the press1 in ,congress and in the ,white ,house4 ,the ,indian and the ,nation owe much to the ,mohonk ,conference4 ,the ,sixth ,annual ,conference1 which closed ,september #bhth1 sustained the interest of past years in the importance of the topics discussed1 in the divergency of opinion at first1 and in the complete harmony at the end4 ,the points agreed upon in the platform were arranged under five heads4 ,the first relates to the establishment of ,courts of ,justice in the ,reservations and accessible to the ,indians2 the second to the important need of education1 demanding that the ,government shall undertake at once the entire task of providing primary and secular education for all ,indian children2 the third urges that this education shall be compulsory1 under proper limitations2 the fourth emphasizes the duty of the churches to furnish religious instruction to the ,indians1 and the immunity of their work from all governmental interference where sustained wholly by missionary funds2 the fifth approves of the co-operation of the ,government with the missionary societies in contract schools during the present transitional condition of the ,indians4 ,we append the last two items of the report4 #d4 ,in view of the great work which the ,christian ,churches have done in the past in inaugurating and maintaining schools among the ,indians1 and of the essential importance of religious as distinguished from secular education1 for their civil1 political and moral well-being1 an element of education which1 in the nature of the case1 the ,national ,government cannot afford1 the churches should be allowed the largest liberty1 not1 indeed1 to take away the responsibility from the ,government in its legitimate sphere of educational work1 but to supplement it to the fullest extent in their power1 by such schools1 whether primary1 normal or theological1 as are at the sole cost of the benevolent or missionary societies4 ,and it is the deliberate judgment of this ,conference that in the crisis of the ,indian transitional movement the churches should arouse themselves to the magnitude and emergency of the duty thus laid upon them in the providence of ,god4 #e4 ,nothing should be done to impair or weaken the agencies at present engaged in the work of ,indian education4 ,every such agency should be encouraged and promoted1 except as other and better agencies are provided for the work4 ,in particular1 owing to the anomalous condition of the ,indians and the fact that the ,government is administering trust funds that belong to them1 what is known as the contract system--by which the nation aids by appropriations private and missionary societies in the work of ,indian education--ought to be maintained by a continuance of such aid1 until the ,government is prepared1 with adequate buildings and competent teachers1 to assume the entire work of secular education4 ,in no case should the ,government establish schools to compete with private or church schools which are already doing a good work1 so long as there are thousands of ,indian children for whose education no provision is ,central ,congregational ,church4 ,the entire service was impressive1 and ,rev4 ,mr4 ,henderson enters upon a very responsible charge of a large church with many encouragements and hopes of great success4 ,,our ,,schools ,,and ,,the ,,yellow ,,fever4 ,we have been extremely gratified with the manifestations of faith and courage on the part of our lady teachers in the ,south during the time of fear and panic because of the yellow fever4 ,some were already at their stations and in their schools1 and some were on the way1 subject to the trials of quarantine4 ,not one hesitated in the path of duty4 ,many teachers from the different parts of the ,north were ready to go when the reports of the pestilence were most alarming1 but not one of the teachers who had previously been in the work1 failed to await instructions to go forward whenever we should speak the word4 ,we have been grateful to ,god during all these days of the autumn for the splendid qualities of consecration and courage which have come out of our correspondence with our honored teachers4 ,never did their fathers or brothers1 years ago1 when deadly war called them to face the perils of battle1 show higher courage or a larger sense of duty4 ,almost all of our ,southern schools are now in session1 and begin with increased attendance4 ,,school ,,echo4--,a teacher writes3 ,one of my pupils who had been teaching during the summer came to me in despair over a sum1 saying3 ,i can't understand sympathizing fractions4 7,when we went to school years and years ago1 sympathizing fractions1 meant broken candy4 ,we understood1 but the teacher didn't4 ,times change1 and we change with them47 ,,the ,,samaritan ,,woman4 ,,by ,,rev4 ,c4,j4 ,,ryder1 ,,boston4 ,and they marveled that he talked with the woman4 ,why8 ,she was a sinful woman4 ,but these disciples must even thus early in ,christ's ministry have learned that he had come to call sinners1 not the righteous1 to repentance4 ,she was a ,samaritan6 ,that was a larger reason for their marvel4 ,they could rise above their hatred for sin more easily than their race prejudice2 so can we4 ,the ,samaritans were an inferior people4 ,degraded they were4 ,they had been degraded for centuries4 ,the ,jews shunned them4 ,socially our ,lord was making a great blunder1 perhaps a fatal blunder1 in talking to this ,samaritan woman4 ,his cause was in its infancy4 ,the hand of social prejudice would surely throttle it4 ,why antagonize the existing order of society8 ,how much better to utilize it for the establishment and enlargement of the great and glorious kingdom of our ,lord6 ,this cause needed the influence of ,jewish leaders4 ,why risk this potent influence for the sake of one miserable ,samaritan woman1 or1 for that matter1 for a whole race of ,samaritans8 ,it seemed very poor management of a cause1 new in that country4 ,far be such unwisdom from thee1 ,lord1 we can hear the impassioned and worldly-wise ,peter exclaim4 ,but our ,lord chose to sacrifice the temporary success of his kingdom that he might be true to the eternal principles of that kingdom2 and so he talked with this sinful woman of this despised race just as considerately as with ,nicodemus4 ,he invited her to his discipleship just as cordially1 and to the same discipleship4 ,there is not a hint that the ,good ,shepherd built another fold for the ,samaritan sheep1 lest some of the ,jewish flock should jump over the fence1 if they were put into the same fold4 ,these ,samaritans were not only degraded and despised socially1 but they were also superstitious in their religious beliefs1 and semi-heathen in their forms of worship4 ,it would take generations to bring them up to a level with the ,jewish ,christians4 ,they could not comprehend much of the intelligent preaching that ,christ addressed to the ,jews4 ,why not appoint a special missionary for them1 and then quietly exclude them from the ordinary gatherings8 ,this course would avoid criticism2 it would not violate the established ideas of social and religious propriety4 ,nothing need be said about it4 ,it would not be best to put it on parchment2 just let it be quietly whispered about that the disciples thought it was better for the ,samaritan ,christians not to meet with the others4 ,the disciples were surrounded by prejudiced people1 to be sure1 but these prejudices were very old2 time would correct all these social and race inequalities4 ,the disciples thought it better to ignore them1 and just organize and carry on their work with no reference to these degraded and superstitious ,samaritans4 ,such seems to have been somewhat the reasoning of these timid disciples4 ,it was not our ,lord's reasoning2 the doors of his blessed kingdom opened to all4 ,it required no magic sesame of race respectability to throw back these gates of pardon and hope4 ,sin must be left outside1 but the sinner of every race and tribe was welcomed to all the privileges of this kingdom4 ,we now see the wisdom and the divinity of our ,lord's course4 ,had these marveling disciples had their way1 the sect of the ,christians would have been added to the sects of the ,herodians and the ,sadducees1 and been buried in the same grave centuries ago4 ,the voice that talked with this ,samaritan woman is heard round the globe now1 and every century only adds greater authority to its divine utterance2 and it is heard because it spoke with this despised ,samaritan woman4 ,our ,lord did not ignore this race prejudice2 he rebuked it4 ,and so these timid disciples1 realizing only the temporary danger that threatened1 marveled that he talked with this woman4 ,god pity them6 ,but how human they were4 ,so to-day1 in ,india1 the missionaries of the cross1 true to their ,lord's great example1 talk with pariah and ,brahmin1 and welcome them both to equal privileges in the kingdom of his grace--and men marvel4 ,and so in ,alabama and ,south ,carolina1 the missionaries of the cross1 true to the same divine example1 talk with black and with white1 and welcome them both to the same privileges in this kingdom--and even some timid disciples marvel4 ,but the principles of this divine kingdom do not change2 the ,lord of that kingdom1 who talked with the sinful1 weary1 despised ,samaritan woman1 would1 if here in bodily presence now1 talk with the sinful1 weary1 despised black woman1 no matter how much his worldly-wise disciples might marvel4 ,his kingdom is built upon this eternal truth of human brotherhood1 and it will endure because it is4 ,nothing short of this is of his kingdom1 but will crumble to dust4 ,the ,congregationalist ,forty-,second ,annual ,report ,of ,the ,executive ,committee1 ,,for ,,the ,,year ,,ending ,,september #cj,,th1 #ahhh4 ,general ,survey4 ,the field of missions is the world which lieth in darkness4 ,we have to do with that part of it for which we are doubly responsible4 ,it is in darkness and it is our own4 ,we look upon our own land1 with its ,states equal in extent and capacity to foreign kingdoms4 ,when we know that they hold the certainty of a future influence of which their past power has been but a prophecy1 our fears press hard upon our hopes4 ,nor are our work and our fears an intrusion4 ,when the pestilence which walks in darkness brings the destruction which wastes at noonday1 it is our call to feel deeply the distresses of those who are stricken4 ,but plagues consuming human lives are less grevious than those which abide1 and which1 walking in the intellectual and moral darkness of a people1 waste the lives of men and the hopes of souls4 ,this is our call4 ,remember that it is our own country where1 in twelve great ,states1 like empires1 forty per cent4 of the population cannot read1 where1 to-day1 three-fourths of the illiteracy of the whole nation exists2 where the darkness is increasing more rapidly than it is being lighted up2 where much which passes for religion even among those who preach it1 is a travesty upon ,christianity1 openly divorced from relationship with truth1 purity1 integrity and intelligence4 ,our survey takes in questions that are painful2 disturbing questions that are not in the ,north1 nor in the ,west4 ,they are difficult to meet4 ,they are near1 and the troubles which the questions hold are near4 ,they come close to the heart of ,christianity4 ,they are close to the life of the churches4 ,they are close to the first principles of human rights4 ,they are questions that can have only one final solution1 which may be so remote that fearful dangers will culminate in terrible disasters before the only remedy can do its work4 ,there are now nearly eight millions of a ,negro population1 from four millions twenty years ago4 ,there are more than two millions of mountain people in the ,south1 one-half of whom cannot read4 ,these benighted people live where there has never been a public-school system even for the more highly favored race1 and where this more highly favored race deliberately assigns those who are not of its color to a permanent inferiority4 ,the laws of caste are to be inflexibly enforced against all people of color who would rise from their low-down conditions4 ,this is our ,southern mission field1 which ,god has committed to us1 according to our faith and opportunity4 ,those of our own race in the ,south could not do this work1 which is upon our consciences and hearts1 if they would4 ,they do not see what we see4 ,they would not if they could4 ,they do not feel what we feel4 ,we are sent1 not as philanthropists who hear the cry of the poor and needy1 nor as patriots who realize the perils that overhang the ,state1 but as missionaries of ,jesus ,christ who believe that salvation takes in the whole man1 including philanthropy and statesmanship1 and whatever builds up man for time and for eternity4 ,we have1 however1 no other charter for our work than that of missions4 ,we have no other errand than that of the messengers of ,christ4 ,only as we go in his name and with his spirit do we ask the churches to listen and hear with us1 and with us to look and see4 ,,our ,,schools4 ,our missionary work has been largely in schools4 ,it was ,god's providence4 ,but these were always missionary centres4 ,their number at the present time is ninety-three2 seventeen of these in the ,southern ,states are ,normal ,schools from which a large proportion of the pupils go forth as teachers4 ,it is computed that of the #ae1jjj ,negro teachers in the ,south instructing #hjj1jjj pupils1 #ac1ejj became teachers from missionary schools1 and that a great army of more than #g1jjj of these teachers received their education in the institutions of the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,thus the faith of the churches multiplies and accelerates itself4 ,these ,normal ,schools are located in ,,wilmington1 ,n4,c41 ,,charleston and ,,greenwood1 ,s4,c41 ,,atlanta1 ,,macon1 ,,savannah1 ,,thomasville and ,,mcintosh1 ,,ga41 ,,mobile1 ,,athens and ,,marion1 ,,ala41 ,,memphis1 ,,jonesboro1 ,,grand ,,view and ,,pleasant ,,hill1 ,,tenn41 ,,lexington and ,,williamsburg1 ,,ky41 to which must be added the large ,normal and ,industrial ,school at ,santee ,agency1 ,nebraska1 the ,oahe ,industrial ,school and the ,fort ,berthold ,industrial ,school1 both in ,dakota1 and all three for the ,indians1 making altogether #bj4 ,the ,association provides also the entire teaching force at the ,ramona ,indian ,school at ,santa ,f1 ,new ,mexico4 ,to these ,normal ,schools1 we may add the six normal departments in our colleges with their superior normal instruction4 ,from nearly all of these1 strong appeals for enlargement have come to meet the demands of a healthy growth4 ,we have cut1 trimmed and denied1 with a resolution that has been painful both in the office and in the field1 and yet the growth is upon us4 ,without pushing our work1 it is pushing us4 ,while ignorant millions need the truth and knowledge which we have1 and there are resources in the hands of the disciples of ,christ enough for this vast and increasingly urgent work1 the necessity of denying the provisions for the development of success becomes well-nigh oppressive4 ,,at ,,pleasant ,,hill1 ,,tenn41 an important centre in our ,mountain work1 we have now1 in addition to the new church1 a school building unequalled in that region4 ,a second building for a dormitory and boarding hall is nearly completed4 ,,the ,,grand ,,view ,,academy in the ,mountain region1 has also increased its school accommodations1 and the look forward is to a large institution with far-reaching influence in the valley of the ,cumberland and on the plateau4 ,if we are to hold this region1 we must take possession now4 ,we have also reassumed charge of a school at ,beaufort1 ,n4,c4 ,the people are already appealing to us in the accents of their own sacrifices for its immediate enlargement4 ,providentially1 and without our solicitation1 a generous giver1 of ,brooklyn1 ,n4,y41 who had already added to many large benevolences in the ,south1 the fine building known as ,ballard ,hall and the excellent shops for industrial training at ,tougaloo1 made a proffer of #aa1ejj to erect at ,macon1 ,ga41 a school building of brick1 capable of accommodating six hundred pupils4 ,this successful school had grown until it had taken possession of the church building for school purposes4 ,this noble gift1 bestowed after a personal inspection on the part of ,mr4 ,ballard1 and upon personal conviction of its immediate necessity1 could not be refused1 and ,ga41 is in a rice region remote from civilization and educational privileges1 among thousands of ,negro people very ignorant and poor4 ,it cannot receive the pupils who beg for admission4 ,children are punctual at school from a distance of eight miles1 lest they shall lose their privileges by tardiness or absence4 ,africa itself could scarcely send out a cry of greater need4 ,we had decided to increase the capacity of this school1 but are compelled to wait4 ,,at ,,greenwood1 ,s4,c41 the interests are so great and the appeals were so reasonable1 that it was voted to enlarge the facilities for the growing institution2 but at the last we could not do this1 and the laborers there continue their prayers and their hopes4 ,,the ,,lincoln ,,normal ,,institute at ,marion1 ,ala41 was established in the year #ahfh1 by the ,a4,m4,a4 ,in the year #ahgd1 the ,state of ,alabama asked to assume the school1 which had won a good name1 and to increase its facilities for the education of the ,negro4 ,this was done4 ,last year1 the work was deserted by the ,state and came anew into our hands4 ,this1 also1 is an enlargement upon our schedule of work4 ,at ,,lexington1 ,,ky41 our ,normal ,school has grown to such a degree that even the vestibules and halls of our insufficient building were crowded with eager pupils4 ,teachers were teaching1 and pupils were studying1 in conditions that none but missionary teachers would accept4 ,for lack of room1 industrial training has been impossible4 ,the locality1 meanwhile1 has been surrounded by saloons1 and houses that are worse4 ,a benevolent lady who became acquainted with these facts offered #b1jjj to purchase four acres of land for school and industrial purposes1 and to give money sufficient for a new brick edifice with eight large school-rooms and all needful appointments and furnishings2 the gift amounting to #ae1jjj4 ,we believe that we were not wrong in accepting this trust in your behalf1 even though it means more teachers and increased expenditures4 ,we are confident that your ,christian faith would not decline this ,christian benevolence4 ,hence the plans for ,chandler ,school are in the hands of the builders4 ,could some like-minded wealthy steward of the grace of ,god visit ,williamsburg1 ,ky41 in our ,mountain ,white work1 we might be compelled to face another such dilemma4 ,,at ,,meridian1 ,,miss41 where ,christian parents have besought us for years1 past to open a missionary school1 through which their children might be saved to morality and integrity of character during the formative exceptional interest4 ,the college work is developing and the theological school was never better4 ,the industrial departments in agriculture and the mechanic arts offer fine advantages4 ,the institution increases in popular favor and is full of students4 ,,atlanta ,,university in ,georgia1 under the temporary presidency of ,prof4 ,francis1 who was also college preacher and pastor1 has moved on in its usual course4 ,through the successful solicitation of ,prof4 ,bumstead1 with our cordial and constant endorsement1 sufficient ,christian money came into the treasury to meet the deficiency caused by the withdrawal of #h1jjj from the ,state of ,georgia4 ,the ,association was able in its grants to share in this satisfactory result4 ,at the last meeting of the ,trustees1 ,prof4 ,bumstead was elected ,president for the ensuing year1 and ,prof4 ,chase1 in view of a removal to ,new ,mexico1 resigned the professorship which he had ably held many years4 ,,straight ,,university at ,new ,orleans1 located in the most influential city of the ,southwest1 draws its students from refined ,creole homes and from the rude cabins of the remote plantations4 ,an interesting report gathered from twenty-two of its students who taught school during the summer vacation1 tells us that they instructed #a1cih pupils in day schools and organized thirteen ,sunday-schools1 in which were taught #a1egd children1 most of whom were absolutely unreached before4 ,this summer record of ,straight ,university students is a partial illustration of what is going forth from it year by year2 and not from ,straight only1 but from all of our higher schools4 ,the theological work in ,straight is of incalculable importance4 ,,tillotson ,,institute1 at ,austin1 ,texas1 has invigorated its normal course and has inaugurated a hopeful college preparatory department4 ,the recipient of a special gift1 it was enabled to complete a new industrial building1 in which has begun a course of industrial training4 ,it greatly needs a second dormitory hall for young women1 and were not the institution so remote1 some prophetic giver would see the urgency and the strategy of such a gift1 and would make it4 ,if1 without the sight1 some one shall be led to do this for ,tillotson1 he will reap the blessing of those who do not see and yet believe4 ,,tougaloo ,,university1 near ,jackson1 ,miss41 is an institution of exceeding interest4 ,it has a department of ,biblical instruction added to its course of study1 in which students are prepared to preach the gospel4 ,its industrial facilities are excellent1 both for agricultural and mechanical training4 ,the students can take the timber from the tree1 and the iron in the rough1 and make wagons and carriages sufficiently good to compete with the best makers in the ,state4 ,the school in all of its parts is controlled by the missionary spirit4 ,rev4 ,f4,g4 ,woodworth1 of ,connecticut1 last year assumed the ,presidency4 ,,fisk ,,university1 at ,nashville1 ,tenn41 is one of the oldest and most complete of all our ,southern colleges1 and has no superior among all the institutions in the country devoted to the education of the ,negro4 ,giving relatively less attention to the industries1 it models itself after our ,northern colleges1 and emulates them in the rigor of its intellectual studies and in the thoroughness with which it seeks to make good teachers and preachers2 educators in the larger way for the race4 ,it also has a department of theology4 ,it has made its place1 which it holds with enthusiasm and fidelity4 ,if some one would give us1 or leave us1 money to endow this institution1 he could scarcely send his influence further down the centuries than in this way4 ,it would tell upon the race and upon the ,nation4 ,in this glance at our schools1 we see ,christian schools4 ,but they are more1 they are missionary schools4 ,we are bearing the torch of ,christ into places of darkness4 ,we teach the industries to them because they can be made tributary to the salvation of the people4 ,they are the leaves of the tree of life1 and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the people4 ,we may not close this review of our school system without remembering those institutions now standing alone2 great ,hampton1 in whose rich gifts we rejoice1 and ,berea1 another child of the ,a4,m4,a41 now ,ironaton1 ,ala41 which is soon to be dedicated4 ,the members have sacrificed nobly to secure it4 ,the church at ,meridian has united with the ,association in the erection of a beautiful house of worship which1 with the new school and the teachers' home1 will be ready in a few weeks for occupancy4 ,the church at ,knoxville has been enlarged and is practically new4 ,it will soon be re-dedicated4 ,the church at ,pine ,mountain is a year old2 is already the center of four ,sunday-schools1 with an attendance of #dae children1 only #aj of whom had ever been in a ,sunday-school before4 ,revivals of religious interest have been reported from our churches in ,washington1 ,wilmington1 ,charleston1 ,talladega1 ,mobile1 ,athens1 ,marion1 ,selma1 ,birmingham and ,new ,orleans4 ,those of the churches which are side by side with our educational institutions are most hopeful2 but wherever we have planted churches1 they stand forth to represent the ethics of ,christianity1 the purity and truth of character which must be contained in a worthy discipleship4 ,a large proportion of our pastors are children of the ,a4,m4,a4 ,parsonages have been built for our churches in ,mobile1 ,ala41 and in ,dallas1 ,texas4 ,,mountain ,,work4 ,this year has laid great emphasis on the fact that we have entered1 in the ,southern mountains1 a missionary field of vast importance1 pressing needs and unbounded hopefulness4 ,we have in this region1 where a few years ago there was nothing1 two normal schools1 two academies1 five common schools1 and twenty churches4 ,in a territory five hundred miles long1 and more than two hundred miles broad--twice the size of all ,new ,england--are at least between three and four hundred counties with a population greater than that of ,maine1 ,new ,hampshire1 ,vermont1 ,rhode ,island and ,connecticut combined1 without schools worthy of the name1 without ,sunday-schools1 without prayer meetings1 without an educated1 spiritual1 or even moral ministry1 without a weekly ,sabbath religious service of any kind1 or any of the institutions of the gospel which really elevate them4 ,they have a religion which is not a pure ,christianity and which does not even involve morality4 ,the ,christian work1 lately introduced and already done among them1 demonstrates that they are capable of a rapid and radical change1 when once the vivifying touch of the gospel has reached their hearts4 ,instead of twenty ,congregational churches among them1 there is room for a thousand1 and instead of nine ,christian schools1 if there were twenty-five normal schools1 it would be only one to each hundred thousand people2 and if there were a hundred common schools1 there would be one to each three or four counties for models4 ,there should be one good college4 ,if there were ,congregational churches in this region in the same proportion as in ,new ,england there would be a full thousand4 ,if they were in the same proportion as ,connecticut1 there would be twelve hundred churches2 as ,new ,hampshire1 thirteen hundred2 as ,vermont1 sixteen hundred4 ,congregationalism goes to these people as the representative of pure1 intelligent and progressive ,christianity4 ,we can gather them into schools1 ,sunday-schools and churches1 anywhere where we can put a ,christian worker4 ,our only limit is consecrated workers and the support for them4 ,the field is as ripe this very day for a thousand as for a score4 ,but the school and the church must go together4 ,this is one of the richest of the mineral regions of the world4 ,great forests of black walnut1 poplar1 and other valuable timber1 are awaiting the woodman's ax and the lumberman's mill4 ,railroads are either built1 building or planned for every part to carry away its wonderful natural resources4 ,the people are poor1 but the land is rich1 and a few years hence will see wealth in the place of poverty1 in the hands of either the natives1 or those who will have displaced them4 ,all the motives which urge the establishment of the church and the school for the incoming population of the ,west1 press us to build them in this great empire of the ,south2 and they become doubly imperative when we take into account the fact that a population of between two and three millions is already in the land and needs to be saved now4 ,the motives for home and foreign missions are thus combined1 and impelling us for ,christ's sake1 for humanity's sake1 and for our country's sake1 to give the gospel to this people4 ,we are not building pauper institutions in this mountain country to be forever a dead weight for the ,northern churches to carry1 but institutions which will very speedily take care of themselves1 and give to others as they have received4 ,this is a portion of the ,south where slavery scarcely existed4 ,when war came1 it was loyal to the ,union almost to a man4 ,this fact shows that they have a natural affiliation with ,northern ideas4 ,the caste spirit is among them--as it is indeed in the ,north to some extent--but it much more readily yields to reason and loving teaching than in other portions of the ,south4 ,vigorous and extensive missionary work can and will mould the ideas and sentiments of this whole region1 and thus establish no-caste churches and schools1 where they would demonstrate to the ,south that they do not carry with them social disorder and every baleful influence4 ,amid the success1 joy and hopefulness of the year's work1 came the affliction of the shooting of ,prof4 ,george ,lawrence1 while about his duties in our school in ,jellico1 ,tenn4 ,it was the work of a miserable creature whose brain was fired with whiskey1 and who was urged on by the saloon element as a retaliation for earnest temperance work4 ,after long and anxious weeks of intense suffering1 a brave fight against death proved successful1 and we now hope that our missionary's life is spared for many years of usefulness4 ,nearly a hundred men have been shot already in this one place1 and the place itself is not more than six years old4 ,is it strange that these mountain people who have a glimpse of better things1 are appealing to us every week of the year to plant institutions among them8 ,is it not the voice of ,christ clearly commanding us to possess and subdue this land1 and to transform it into a part of his peaceful and beneficent ,kingdom1 which shall join hands with us to pass on the torch of ,christ to others yet in darkness8 ,,the ,,indians4 ,the people of ,america are determined to press the ,indian problem to a speedy solution4 ,provision has been made for giving lands in severalty1 and the next great movement should be to induce the ,government to provide secular education1 and the churches to furnish religious instruction to all the ,indians4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association1 during the year1 has responded to this new impulse by enlarging its work--in the opening of new stations1 in the erection of new buildings1 and in the appointment of more missionaries and teachers4 ,at the ,santee ,agency1 ,nebraska1 our oldest mission station and school has had marked prosperity in its normal1 theological and industrial departments1 and1 better than all1 in a deep and wide-spread religious interest that has pervaded the school and the church4 ,the new building1 named ,whitney ,hall--from its giver--has been erected1 affording accommodations for twenty-two of the larger and more advanced pupils1 and furnishing rooms for the treasurer's family4 ,a liberal gift from ,mrs4 ,henry ,perkins1 of ,hartford1 ,conn41 provides1 for the present at least1 for the running expenses of the ,boys' ,hall1 and1 in appreciation of the gift1 and of the interest in the school which the gift implies1 the building will hereafter be called ,perkins ,hall4 ,at ,oahe1 ,dakota1 on the beautiful ,peoria ,bottom1 both the school and church have prospered4 ,the school is crowded to its utmost capacity and a greater number of pupils has been granted in the contract with the ,government4 ,a new building is urgently called for4 ,the closing exercises of the school were attended by a picturesque group of three or four hundred ,indians1 who were encamped around the station4 ,some of these came a hundred and twenty-five miles to attend the exercises4 ,one marked feature in the enlargement of the work has been the opening of two more ,central ,stations3 one at ,rosebud ,agency1 the other located at ,fort ,yates1 near the junction of the ,grand ,river with the ,missouri4 ,the new mission house has been built1 and by the aid of special gifts from benevolent friends at the ,east1 a commodious building has been erected for a hospital4 ,a peculiar and very interesting feature of our ,indian work is the out-stations1 located remote from the ,central ,stations4 ,these stations1 numbering twenty-one1 have been hindered and also enlarged during the past year4 ,the hindrance came from the interference of the ,government4 ,in its well-intended zeal for the introduction of the ,english language1 it surpassed the limits which experience had fixed1 by requiring that the vernacular should not be taught1 nor even spoken1 in any ,indian schools on the ,reservation including these mission stations1 which were wholly sustained by benevolent funds4 ,under this ruling1 thirteen stations were closed from ,september to ,january4 ,but the remonstrances coming from almost every denomination of ,christians in the land induced the ,government to modify its orders1 and the schools have all been re-opened4 ,some new buildings have been erected on this part of the field--a new house for dwelling and school on the ,grand ,river1 and a cheap structure at the ,cheyenne ,river ,agency1 in which religious services are held at the times for the disbursement of the rations1 when large numbers of the ,indians assemble and remain for many days4 ,a new impulse has been given to this out-station work by contributions received at one of the missionary meetings in ,northfield1 ,mass4 ,four new stations were provided for at that time by the contribution of #djj for a building at each station1 and #cjj for the support of the teacher4 ,one was the gift of ,mr4 ,moody1 another of ,mr4 ,sankey1 whose names these two stations will bear4 ,fort ,berthold1 in the northern part of ,dakota1 has authorization from the ,government for a larger number of pupils under contract than last year4 ,but our exigencies require for this only a few and inexpensive repairs and additions to be made on the buildings4 ,the ,skokomish mission continues its stable progress4 ,the missionary1 ,rev4 ,myron ,eells1 has been tempted during the past year by several calls to enter more lucrative fields of service1 but his attachment to the work1 begun by his most honored father1 and continued by himself1 is so great that he prefers to remain with his people1 and to aid them in their progress in civil and ,christian life4 ,the ,indian school at ,santa ,f1 ,new ,mexico1 has had some changes1 but the arrangement between the ,association and the trustees is continued1 and the school1 under the charge of ,prof4 ,elmore ,chase1 maintains its useful service in the training of the children of the ,apaches1 one of the most hopeful and promising tribes of ,indians on the continent4 ,,the ,,chinese4 ,the special interest of the year centres in the evangelistic work that was commenced early in the winter4 ,of our #ci workers reported1 fourteen are ,chinamen1 who have been converted in our schools4 ,two of these brethren were set apart last ,december as special evangelists1 one going to our missions in ,southern ,california1 and the other to our more ,northern missions4 ,subsequently another one entered the field4 ,the intention was to give one month of service at each mission1 and the gratifying experience has been that at no point has this one month been deemed sufficient4 ,at the end of five months the harvest reported was forty souls brought to repentance4 ,three new missions are upon our list this year2 those at ,los ,angeles1 ,san ,buenaventura1 and ,tucson4 ,at ,los ,angeles no less than #ge pupils were enrolled the first month1 and at all these places ,christian ,associations have been formed4 ,a minister on the ,pacific ,coast not in connection with our schools1 after giving a sketch of work accomplished which could not be tabulated1 says3 ,socially1 intellectually1 spiritually1 the ,chinese mission school does its beneficent work4 ,but everything is made but the means to the spiritual end4 ,the whole drift of the teaching1 the songs1 the pictures1 the ,scripture text1 is to make known ,christ4 ,every evening's lesson ends with worship4 ,in no year1 may ,i add1 have there been so many conversions among the ,chinese on this coast as in the one just passed4 ,,woman',s ,,bureau4 ,there are thirteen ,woman's ,state ,organizations which co-operate with us in our missionary work4 ,these are in ,maine1 ,vermont1 ,connecticut1 ,new ,york1 ,alabama1 ,ohio1 ,illinois1 ,michigan1 ,wisconsin1 ,minnesota1 ,iowa1 ,kansas and ,south ,dakota4 ,other ,states1 also1 not yet organized1 are assisting in definite lines1 as ,massachusetts and ,new ,hampshire4 ,our ,bureau of ,woman's ,work has for many years proved its wisdom4 ,the state of black womanhood and girlhood taken together is pitiful4 ,the permanent and uplifting ,christianization and civilization to be engrafted on the ,negro race in this land1 can come only as the womanhood of that people is imbued with right principles and led to right practices4 ,unless the life of the woman is reached and saved1 there can be no true religion1 family life1 or social status4 ,hence our industrial and boarding schools for the training of girls in domestic work1 in the trades of dressmaking and such like1 in the art of cooking1 the cultivation of small fruits and flowers1 so that the sacred influences of ,christianity shall circle around the thousand firesides where now everything is coarse1 and ignorant1 and senseless4 ,with our large corps of lady teachers1 the ,woman's ,bureau1 as an intermediary between the ,woman's ,state ,association and their sisters who are teaching in the field1 and the women and girls to whom they are sent1 has proved during the year its increasing efficiency4 ,,finances ,the receipts have been1 #cbj1iec4db1 which with the balance on hand1 ,september #cjth1 #ahhg1 of #b1aic4hj1 makes a total of #cbc1adg4bb4 ,we have received in addition to this #a1jjj for an ,endowment ,fund4 ,the total disbursements for the year have been #cbh1ghh4dc4 ,the churches through the ,national ,council have asked us to keep abreast with the providence of ,god4 ,it is our duty1 said the ,ohio ,state ,association1 to see that this great work in which we have borne so large and honorable a part1 halt not1 nor slacken in its energy because of our failure to keep its treasury replenished and its faithful laborers re-enforced and supported by our gifts and our prayers4 ,said our good friend1 the ,congregationalist1 in an editorial after our inspiring meeting at ,portland in ,october last3 ,never did the magnitude of the field1 and the complex character of its labors1 appear in such startling lines4 ,either of the four departments of labor demands the money and the force which is distributed among all4 ,but1 in the providence of ,god1 this society is called upon to prosecute this fourfold work4 ,it cannot abandon a single field and must not be asked to4 ,it can do in the next five years a work for ,christianity and for ,congregationalism in the ,south and ,west which will tell on the coming century4 ,as ,christians1 and as ,congregational ,christians1 we must see to it that it be not obliged to pinch its workers and to turn away from promising openings in order to keep free from debt the coming year4 ,thus charged1 we have yet gone within our instructions4 ,we have made every dollar do more than its work4 ,we have gathered up the fragments that nothing be lost2 and yet to-day our payments anticipate our receipts by the sum of #e1fda4ba4 ,we do not regret the anxiety and pain which it has cost us to effect what we have4 ,the generous words of sympathy and confidence that have come to us of late1 with noble gifts1 large and small1 repay the solicitude and incessant care4 ,we thank ,god and his people1 and hold firmly our faith in ,him who said1 ,knock1 and it shall be opened unto you4 ,he opened the door4 ,our faith is in ,him who also said1 ,ask1 and ye shall receive4 ,the year opened with the ,association bereft of its honored ,president4 ,we come to this new year happy in our choice of the ,rev4 ,wm4 ,m4 ,taylor1 ,d4,d41 of ,new ,york1 to fill this most important position4 ,in his acceptance we congratulate the ,association4 ,since the year began1 the churches have missed the stirring appeals of our beloved ,secretary ,powell1 who had the especial oversight and burden of the collecting fields4 ,such a life as that of ,james ,powell is not common4 ,it was a grand sacrifice of undeviating love for those whose poverty made him a debtor to them4 ,his consecration will not be forgotten4 ,his sudden departure--our great bereavement--made necessary the transfer of the ,rev4 ,c4,j4 ,ryder from the field to the ,district ,secretaryship of the ,eastern ,district in ,new ,england1 who has brought with his energy and zeal such an experience1 and personal knowledge of the entire field1 as to insure him the most hearty welcome and co-operation on the part of our pastors and churches4 ,the ,rev4 ,f4,e4 ,jenkins1 a graduate of ,williams ,college and of ,hartford ,theological ,seminary1 for some time earnestly engaged in our ,southern work1 has been appointed a field superintendent for personal examination and supervision of our churches and schools1 and has already entered upon his duties4 ,the ,association1 with its ,superintendents continually in the field1 who report every fact to the ,secretaries at the office1 who in turn submit the entire work to the churches1 is thus continually made better prepared to direct the sacrifices of the benevolent in ways that shall not be irresponsible or unwise1 than those which are subject to no such scrutiny or supervision1 and are held to no responsibility4 ,much less money would be diverted from this authorized and recognized servant of the ,congregational ,churches1 and far greater efficiency would be secured1 if our friends would remember that their own ordained agency can open as many missions as they will make possible1 which shall have1 at least1 one advantage over independent and unsupervised work1 in that1 through us1 attended that school for several years4 ,being next to the oldest of eight children1 my parents decided to take me from school in '#hc1 that ,i might earn something4 ,i had often heard of ,talladega ,college1 and wanted very much to enter there1 but my father being only a poor carpenter1 it was impossible for me to get the means to accomplish my desires4 ,however1 by the aid of ,northern friends ,i entered the above named school1 ,october #b;d1 #ahhc4 ,evenings and ,saturdays ,i worked by the hour to help defray my expenses4 ,unable to obtain a school1 ,i could be found at the college1 during the summers of '#hd and '#he1 working about the buildings or on the farm4 ,the money earned there was used for schooling4 ,during my last year in school ,i had job work--sweeping and caring for lamps4 ,this work was done early in order that ,i might have time for study4 ,and each morning1 before day1 my broom could be heard moving through the corridors4 ,at the close of school1 ,i had paid by work1 and a prize gained in speaking the year before1 about #eb4ge4 ,it was agreed that the balance should be paid after leaving school4 ,in a class of ten ,i received a diploma from the normal department1 ,june #ag1 #ahhf4 ,my time during the summer was occupied in working with my father at the carpenter's trade4 ,texas was said to have good public-schools1 and it was my plan to try the ,lone ,star ,state4 ,i was working to secure means to pay the fare1 but father failed in being paid promptly1 and this forced me to borrow money for the purpose4 ,many tried to discourage me in my plan as it was what is sometimes termed as a wild goose chase4 ,i remarked1 though1 that if no schools could be found1 there were other things to be done--cotton to be picked2 wagons to be driven2 and ditches to be dug4 ,so the work-clothes were not forgotten when my trunk was packed4 ,on ,september #cj1 #ahhf1 ,i arrived in ,henderson1 a stranger to all save one1 and with a very small purse4 ,then commenced my trials4 ,i was in my twenty-first year1 but had a young appearance1 and the trustees of most schools objected to me for that reason4 ,i walked many miles in search of work1 and it was not till the middle of ,november that my first school opened4 ,owing money for schooling1 for fare to this ,state1 and for board after coming here1 caused me to start far below the surface in pecuniary matters4 ,as ,i had made large plans1 that was quite discouraging4 ,the school proceeded nicely and a ,sabbath-school was organized in connection4 ,the latter was quite small1 though there was a large attendance in the day school4 ,at the close of school1 ,march #bc1 #ahhg1 all expressed a willingness for me to teach the next session1 but there was a trouble ahead which changed their views4 ,the question of prohibition was to be decided by the people in ,august4 ,i am sorry to say the majority of our people were on the wrong side4 ,but most of the teachers and preachers fought with an untiring energy against the saloons4 ,for this act of ours1 many refused to give us work4 ,some even sneered at the prohib4 teachers1 as we walked along the streets4 ,those were days of discouragement as our labor seemed to be in vain4 ,my summer's work lasted only a month1 and being an independent school the returns were quite small1 #f4jj only4 ,having to aid my parents1 and a two months' sickness1 caused me to be below the surface again at the opening of my school1 ,november #ad4 ,this work continued for six months4 ,a ,sabbath-school was organized2 and1 unlike the previous year1 outnumbered the daily attendance4 ,it has been said that it is better to turn up something than to wait for something to turn up4 ,so ,i bought a small outfit for making photographs4 ,it is incomplete1 but enough to get an idea of the art4 ,after looking at some of my work1 our county ,judge was heard to say4 ,that's a good picture for that nigger4 ,my summer school was nine miles away1 and ,i came here every ,friday evening1 that ,i might practice at my new trade4 ,to save the hire and feed of a horse1 ,i always walked here and back4 ,the way at times seems dark1 but ,i take courage to set before the readers of the ,,missionary a statement of the year's work1 made as complete as the space at my command allows3 #a4 ,seventeen missions have been sustained during a part or the whole of the year4 ,ten of these have had no intermission whatever1 except for a day or two at the holidays1 and in one instance a fortnight's vacation4 ,of the remaining seven1 three are new missions1 viz3 ,los ,angeles1 ,san ,buenaventura and ,tucson4 ,the work at these points is full of interest and hope1 and has indeed already begun to yield what seem to us saving results4 #b4 ,thirty-nine workers have been engaged4 ,of these1 fourteen are ,chinese brethren1 converted in connection with our missions1 and trained to the work in the work itself4 ,the aggregate number of months of service is #bie4 #c4 ,in comparison with the record of the previous year1 but little change can be noted4 ,the total number enrolled is #a1aca1 being larger by #hg1 but on the whole one record is about the equivalent of the other4 ,indeed1 it seems to me that in both years we reached very near to the outmost limit of what is possible with the means at our command4 ,the special interest of this year's history centers in the attempt to do1 and to learn better how to do1 evangelistic work4 ,three of our brethren have been set apart to this1 and have been followed from place to place by the prayers of many4 ,they had much to learn when they started forth and have much yet to learn4 ,it is by no means clear to me that we have hit upon the wisest methods1 and ,i know that we have not yet entered into the fullness of power1 either with ,god or man4 ,yet ,i can see that these brethren are stronger and braver and more eager in this work than they were a year ago4 ,and the blessing of ,god on their labors has been such as enables us to believe that full sixty of their countrymen have been led to ,christ4 ,this carries the whole number concerning whom this hope has been cherished1 since the beginning of
