surgeon1 or sexologist1 there has been a vox clamantis in deserto4 ,usually these voices have fallen on unheeding ears2 but again and again some delver in books1 some student of men1 some inspired1 self-effacing1 or altruistic one has taken up the cry2 and at last unthinking1 unheeding1 superficial1 self-satisfied humanity has turned to listen4 ,aristotle by the sure inductive method learned and taught much1 concerning the sex relations of men and women1 that it would profit us today to heed4 ,balzac1 ,luther1 ,michelet1 ,spencer1 and later1 at our very doors1 ,krafft-,ebbing1 ,forel1 ,bloch1 ,ellis1 ,freud1 ,hall1 and scores of others have added their voices4 ,all these have seen whither we were drifting1 and have made vigorous protests according to their lights4 ,many of these protests should have been heard1 but were not1 and only now are just beginning to be heeded4 ,such pioneers in the field of proper1 healthful1 ethical1 religious1 sane daily sex living1 have been ,sturgis and ,malchow1 who talked earnestly to an unheeding profession of these things1 and now1 ,i have the honor to write an introductory word to a book in this field1 that is sane1 wise1 practical1 entirely truthful1 and unspeakably necessary4 ,i can endorse the teachings in ,dr4 ,long's book more fully because ,i have1 for nearly a quarter of a century1 been holding similar views1 and dispensing similar1 though perhaps less explicit1 information4 ,i know from long observation that the teaching is wholesome and necessary1 and that the results are universally uplifting4 ,such teachings improve health1 prolong life1 and promote virtue1 adding to the happiness and lessening the burdens of men1 on the one hand2 on the other1 reducing their crimes and vices4 ,a book like this would have proved invaluable to me on my entrance to the married state2 but had ,i had it1 ,i might not have been forced to acquire the knowledge which enables me now to state with all solemnity1 that ,i personally know hundreds of couples whose lives were wrecked for lack of such knowledge1 and that ,i more intimately know hundreds of others to whom verbal teaching along the lines he has laid down1 has brought happiness1 health and goodness4 ,dr4 ,long advances no theories2 neither do ,i4 ,he has found by studying himself and other people1 a sane and salutary way of sex living1 and fearlessly has prescribed this to a limited circle for a long time4 ,i congratulate him for his perspicacity1 temerity1 and wisdom4 ,he offers no apology1 and there is no occasion for any4 ,he says1 ,all has been set down in love1 by a lover1 for the sake of lovers yet to be1 in the hope of helping them on toward a divine consummation4 ,that is1 he has developed these ideas at home1 and then spread them abroad1 or1 he has found them abroad and brought them home2 and they worked4 ,i also speak somewhat ex experientia and have some intimate personal knowledge of many of these things4 ,therefore1 ,i advocate his doctrine1 the more readily1 and maintain that humanity needs these ideas as much today as when ,m4 ,jules ,lemaitre wrote his late introduction to ,michelet's ,l',amour4 ,he said3 ,il ne parait pas1 apres quarante ans passes1 que les choses aillent mieux1 ni que le livre de ,michelet ait rien perdu de son a-propos4 ,twenty years more have elapsed and things have not yet become much better4 ,frank sex talks like ,dr4 ,long's teaching are as a-propos today as was ,michelet's book when it was written1 or when1 after forty years had passed ,m4 ,lemaitre wrote his introduction4 ,idealism is right1 and we all approve it2 so much so1 that many of us cannot see that ultra-idealism1 extremism in right1 7it is foolish to attempt to attain anything better than the best7 may be wrong4 ,undoubtedly1 entire devotion to the material and physical1 is also wrong2 but we never must lose sight of the palpable fact that1 unless we have a proper1 stable1 natural1 well-regulated physical or material foundation1 we must fall short of all ideals4 ,proper physical adjustments enable the realization of realizable ideals4 ,unrealizable ideals are chimeras pursued into futurity1 while a world that should be human and happy waits in vice and misery4 ,i gather that ,dr4 ,long believes that reducing this vice and misery1 and increasing human happiness and improving health are suitable works with which to companion a faith in the ,arbiter of our destinies4 ,if thus he develops his idea of the integrity of the universe1 ,i agree with him fully4 ,his book1 since it delineates the numerous details of a normal sex life1 can be sold1 thanks to our prudish public1 only to the profession4 ,i believe it should go to the larger public as it has gone formerly to his smaller community4 ,in spite of imperfect ideals the ,orient has endured1 while we of the ,occident are fast becoming decadent4 ,we1 by learning something of the art of love1 and of the natural life of married people1 from the ,hindoos1 may perpetuate our civilization4 ,they1 by adopting the best of our transcendentalism1 may reach higher development than we yet have attained4 ,the time has come for a book like this to command the attention of medical men1 since now an awakened public demands from them1 as the conservers of life and the directors of physiological living1 explicit directions in everything pertaining nature of a manuscript1 or heart-to-heart talk between those who have mutual confidence in each other1 than of a technical1 or strictly scientific treatise of the subject in hand2 and ,i cannot do better1 for all parties concerned1 than to explain1 just here in the beginning1 how this came about1 and why ,i have concluded to leave the copy practically as it was originally written4 ,in common with nearly all members of our profession who are engaged in the general practice of medicine1 ,i have had numbers of married men and women1 husbands and wives1 patients and otherwise1 who have come to me for counsel and advice regarding matters which pertain to their sex-life1 as that problem presented itself to them personally4 ,as we all know1 many of the most serious and complicated cases we have to deal with have their origins in these delicate relations which so often exist among wedded people1 of all classes and varieties4 ,for a number of years ,i did what ,i could for these patrons of mine1 by way of confidential talks and the like1 my experience in this regard probably being about on a par with that of my medical brethren who are engaged in the same kind of work4 ,it is needless to say that ,i found1 as you have doubtless found under the same conditions1 many obstacles to prevent satisfactory results1 by this method of procedure4 ,my patients were often so reticent1 or timid and shame-faced1 that it was frequently difficult to get at the real facts in their cases1 and1 as we all know1 many of these would1 for these and other reasons1 conceal more than they revealed1 thereby keeping out of evidence the most vital and significant items in their individual cases4 ,all these things1 of course1 tended to make bad matters worse1 or resulted in nothing that was really worth while4 ,after some years of this sort of experience1 and meditating much on the situation1 ,i came to the conclusion that a very large percentage of all this trouble which ,i and my patrons had to go up against1 was almost entirely the result of ignorance on the part of those who came to consult me2 and because knowledge is always the antidote for not knowing1 ,i came to the conclusion that1 if it were possible to put these people wise where they were now so uninformed1 ,i might at once save them from a deal of harm and myself from much trouble and annoyance4 ,further than this1 ,i remembered once hearing a wise man say that often what cannot be said may be sung2 and ,i realized that it is equally true that much which would be awkward1 or embarrassing1 if said to a person1 face to face1 might be got to them in writing with impunity4 ,this ,i found to be especially true of my women patients1 some of whom might become suspicious of a wrong intent from the things said in a private conversation1 when they would have no such fears or doubts if they read the same words from a printed page4 ,it was these considerations which first suggested to me the writing of the following pages4 ,still other reasons why ,i did as ,i did were as follows3 ,you see1 at once1 if you stop to think about it1 that the writing out of the knowledge ,i proposed to impart was really a matter of necessity for me1 because of the saving of time which would thereby be secured4 ,to get any results that would be worth while in these matters1 ,i would be required to tell about ever so many things concerning which they were totally ignorant2 and to tell about ever so many things1 by word of mouth1 to each individual patient1 takes time--ever so much time1 if the work is well done1 and it had better not be done at all if it is not well done4 ,so ,i really was forced to write out what ,i wanted to teach these patients of mine4 ,and let me say further that ,i was compelled to write these things out for my people as ,i have written them1 because1 in all the range of literature on this vital subject1 ,i knew of nothing which would tell them just what it seemed to me they ought to be told1 and what they ought to know4 ,and so it was that ,i wrote the manuscript which is now printed in the following pages4 ,i did not write it at first just as it now stands1 because experience showed me1 from time to time1 where my first efforts could be modified and improved4 ,so what is here presented is the result of many practical demonstrations of the real working value of what the manuscript contains4 ,my method of using the copy has been something as follows3 ,as ,i have already suggested1 what ,i have written has been prepared for the sole and express purpose of helping husbands and wives to live sane and wholesome sex-lives--to give them the requisite knowledge for so doing2 knowledge of themselves and of each other as sexual beings2 the correct ideas regarding such right manner of living2 to disabuse their minds of wrong sex-teaching1 or no teaching at all1 of ignorance1 or prudery1 or carelessness1 or lust--in a word1 to get to them the things that all sane married people ought to know1 and to help them to practice these things1 to the best of their several abilities4 7,perhaps ,i ought to say that there is not a line of what ,i have written that deals with the subject of venereal diseases1 any of them4 ,this field is already so well covered by a literature especially devoted to this subject that it needs no word of mine to make it as satisfactory as possible1 as far as discoveries regarding the same have progressed4 ,my attempt is toward making marriage more of a success than it now is1 under existing conditions2 and we all know that there is a limitless field for exploration and exploitation right there47 ,speaking somewhat generally1 ,i have found what ,i have written to be of special value to two classes of my patrons3 ,first1 to the newly-weds2 and1 second1 to those who have been married for a longer or shorter period1 and who have not got on well together4 ,a word or two regarding each of these3 ,it is a wise old saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure1 and in no other experience of life is this so true as in the ills to which married people are peculiarly subject4 ,many a newly wedded couple have wrecked the possibilities of happiness of a life time on their honeymoon trip2 and it is a matter of common knowledge to the members of our profession that the great majority of brides are practically raped on their entrance into the married relation4 ,further than this1 we all know that these things are as they are chiefly because of the ignorance of the parties concerned1 rather than because they deliberately meant to do wrong4 ,they were left to travel1 alone and unguided1 over what was to them an unknown way1 one that was beset with pitfalls and precipices1 and where dangers lurked in every forward step they took4 ,it is to these that ,i have found what ,i have written to be a great help at the time of their utmost need2 and the thanks ,i have received from such parties have been beyond the power of words to express4 ,as to just when it is best to put this information into the hands of young married people1 my experience has varied with the personality of the parties concerned4 ,in some cases ,i have put the copy into their hands some time before their marriage2 in others1 not till some time thereafter2 but1 as a rule1 ,i have got the best results by putting the manuscript into their hands just at the time of their marriage1 and in most of these cases the greatest success has come from their reading it together during their honeymoon4 ,however1 this is a matter on which ,i do not care to advise1 and regarding which each practitioner must act to the best of his own judgment4 ,once more3 ,because it is not safe to assume that young married people are already possessed of the details of the essential knowledge which they ought to possess1 and because such details are the very heart of the whole matter1 ,i have made these details as simple and explicit as possible1 more so than might seem necessary to the professional reader4 ,but my experience has proven that ,i was wise in this regard1 as these very details have saved the day in more than one case1 as the parties who have reported to me1 after having read what ,i have written1 have frequently testified4 ,sometimes a bride and groom would keep the copy for a few days only1 giving it but a single reading2 but1 as a rule1 they have been anxious to retain it for some time1 and to read it again and again1 especially some parts of it1 till they were well posted on all that it contains4 ,i found1 too1 that those who had received help from the reading of the manuscript were glad to tell others of their friends of the benefits they had received1 and that thus there was a constantly widening circle4 ,of course1 not all young married people are capable of reading this book with profit to themselves or anyone else2 but many of them are1 and these ought to have the privilege of doing so4 ,your own good sense and experience will determine who these latter are1 and these you can favor as they deserve4 ,it is because of this situation that this book can only be used professionally that it needs the guiding hand of an expert physician to insure its reaching only those who can be benefited by its reading4 ,as to the other class of readers1 those who have not got on well in the marriage relation 7and we all know that the name of these is legion7 my experience in getting to them what ,i have written has been quite varied2 but1 on the whole1 the results have been good--many times they have been most excellent4 ,of course1 it is harder to correct errors than to prevent them2 but as most of the errors ,i have had to deal with among this class of patients have been made through ignorance rather than otherwise1 ,i have found that the establishment of knowledge in the premises has generally brought relief where before was only suffering and woe4 ,another way in which ,i have found the copy to be of the greatest value with these cases of unsatisfactory marital relations is the fact that1 often1 by the parties reading the copy together they have come to a mutual understanding by so doing1 and have established a modus vivendi which could not have been attained in any other way4 ,when such parties see their doctor singly1 either of them1 a prejudiced view is very apt to result1 and they would seldom1 if ever1 come together to consult a physician regarding their troubles4 ,but the reading of the book together makes a condition of affairs which is very apt to work out for the best interests of all parties concerned4 ,certainly1 this is true1 that in no case has the reading of the book made bad matters worse1 and in many cases1 7indeed in nearly all of them7 it has been of untold value and benefit to the readers4 ,and because these things are so1 because what ,i have written has proved its worth in so many cases1 ,i have finally concluded to give the copy a larger field in which it may be used by other members of the profession besides myself4 ,i confide it to my fellow-members in the profession feeling sure that they will use it among their patients with wisdom and discretion2 and my hope is that their so doing may yield for them and theirs the most excellent results which have come to me and mine1 on these lines1 in the years that have gone by4 ,perhaps ,i ought to say that the somewhat unique typography of the book1 the large percentage of italics1 and not a few capitalized words that appear in the pages1 comes from a duplication of the copy ,i have used with my patients4 ,i wrote the original copy in this way for the sake of giving special emphasis to special points for my readers1 and the results attained ,i believe were very largely due to the typographically emphatic form of the book4 ,appearing in type in this way1 it gives a sort of personal touch to what is thus presented to the eye of the reader1 and the tendency of this is to establish a heart-to-heart relation between the author and the reader which could not be attained in any other way4 ,all through the copy ,i have avoided the use of technical words1 never using such a term without explaining its meaning in plain ,english in the words that immediately follow it4 ,i found this an absolute necessity in writing so that the lay reader could understand1 in saying things that would produce results4 ,i might say1 also1 that the ,introduction to the real subject matter of the book1 ,i found necessary to write as it is largely to get my readers into a proper mental attitude for a reasonable recognition and understanding of what follows it4 ,there are so many wrong teachings and biased ideas in the premises that these had to be counteracted or removed1 to a degree1 at least1 before the rest of the copy could be rightly read4 ,my experience is1 that the preface1 as it stands1 has been the means of putting the readers of the book into a right mental attitude for its successful study and consideration4 ,for the good of the cause it is written to serve1 and for help to those who need help in the most sacred and significant affairs of their lives1 may the book go on its way1 if not rejoicing in itself1 yet causing rejoicing in the lives and hearts of all who read what its pages contain4 ,h4,w4,l4 ,,sane ,,sex ,,life ,,argument ,,and ,,the ,,information ,no apology is offered for what is said in the following pages1 but a brief explanation is virtually necessary to make clear1 from the outset1 the reasons why it has been written4 ,it is one of the chief characteristics of the human race that the knowledge acquired by one generation can be passed on to the generations that follow2 and that1 in this way1 progress in the betterment of life's results and the adaptation of means to ends can make a steady and reliable advance4 ,such a method of evolution and growth is not possible in the vegetable or animal kingdom1 where instinct is the only means for the transmission of acquired knowledge4 ,it is this feature that differentiates man from all other created beings4 ,but here is a curious fact3 ,in one realm of human experiences1 in all ,christian civilized countries1 it has been considered wrong1 even in some cases being counted a criminal offense1 punishable by fine and imprisonment1 for anyone to make any record of1 or transmit to anyone else1 any knowledge that may have been acquired regarding sex relations in the human family4 ,to be sure1 there has been preserved1 from time to time1 a body of professional knowledge of this sort1 made and prepared by physicians1 but confined strictly to that class of people4 ,no attempt has been made to disseminate such knowledge among those who most need it--the common people4 ,on the contrary1 every possible effort is put forth to keep such knowledge from them4 ,this is wholly at variance with the practice regarding all other forms of human knowledge1 which is to spread1 as widely as possible1 all known data that have so far been obtained4 ,there is not space1 in this small volume1 for pointing out the reasons for this anomalous condition of affairs1 but the chief cause of its status1 past and present1 is grounded on two sources3 ,the first of these is a brutal selfishness which has come over to modern times from a savage past2 the second is a sort of pious prudery4 ,the result of these causes has been to make the whole subject of sex in the human family1 with its functions and mission in human affairs1 together with its proper training1 discipline and exercise--to make all these things tabu1 something to be ashamed of and ignored as much as possible1 and all the knowledge regarding them that one generation has been permitted to transmit to those who come after1 may be summed up in these words1 namely ,thou shalt not4 ,now it goes without saying that1 in the very nature of things1 all this is just as bad as it can possibly be4 ,for1 of all phenomena with which the human race has to do1 that of the highest importance1 so far as the well-being of the race is concerned1 is that which has to do with sex in men and women4 ,a large percentage of all the physical ailments in mankind and womenkind arise from errors in sexual life1 and these are but trifles compared with the mental and spiritual disasters which come upon humanity from the same source4 ,it is probably true that more than one-half of all the crimes that are committed in the civilized world are more or less directly connected with sex affairs1 and there is no so common a cause for insanity as sex aberrations4 ,and nearly all these ills1 crimes and misfortunes arise because of ignorance in the matter of sex in which the rank and file of the race are forced to live4 ,few of these ever acquire any positive and definite knowledge in the premises1 and if they do learn anything for sure1 they keep it to themselves1 inspired to do so by a false belief regarding the rightful transmission of such knowledge2 or1 by a false modesty1 or prudery1 they are kept from telling to anyone else what they have discovered or found to be the truth in these matters4 ,and so the people stumble along in ignorance of these vital affairs in life1 generation after generation1 repeating the errors of their predecessors1 and no positive progress being made as the years go by4 ,because of this state of affairs millions of human beings die every generation1 and other millions suffer the tortures of the damned while they live1 when they should enjoy the delights of the elect1 and would do so if they only knew the actual facts in the case1 and would act in accordance with the knowledge that ought to be made theirs4 ,but there are not wanting signs of the times that there will slowly come a change in these conditions4 ,the fact is that the intelligent world is beginning to emerge from a condition of conformity to the say-so of some one supposed to speak with authority1 and to come into a realm of obedience only to a law that has a scientific basis of actual knowledge for its foundation4 ,for untold ages the sex relations of the human family have been directed and determined by the clergy and by their teachings and pronunciamentos regarding what was fit and right4 ,there is no need of saying hard things about such a fact2 nevertheless1 it is true that1 for the most part1 all the dicta of these men have originated amongst those who knew nothing of the scientific conditions regarding the subject on which they issue their mandates4 ,so did the blind lead the blind1 and the ditches of the past years are filled to overflowing with the dead bodies and souls of men and women1 who1 for this cause1 have fallen therein4 ,this must not always be6 ,it is neither wise nor right that the essential matters of human life should always remain a stumbling block and a rock of offense for the children of men4 ,we are coming to see that sex is no more unclean and to be denied a scientific knowledge of1 than any other part of the human body--the eye1 the ear or whatsoever4 ,furthermore1 the rank and file are beginning to clamor for a knowledge of these matters for themselves4 ,this is shown by the frequency of articles that deal with sex in many of the best newspapers and magazines in the civilized world1 and by similar discussions in the literature1 the works and scientific books that now go into the hands of the common people4 ,it also shows in the attempts that are occasionally being made to introduce the subject of sexual hygiene into our public schools and other educational institutions4 ,the world do move6 ,it is for these reasons--because it is right to transfer to you and to those who come after1 the sex knowledge that has been acquired by the author1 by reading scientific and professional literature upon the subject1 by conference with men and women who know1 and by personal and professional experience1 that what follows is written4 ,,iii ,,the ,,correct ,,mental ,,attitude ,so much by way of general remarks regarding the subject in hand4 ,it is more the especial purpose of what follows1 however1 to treat of the matter of marriage in particular1 to say something definite to young husbands and wives that shall be of real benefit to them1 not only by way of starting them out right in the new and untried way upon which they have entered1 but to help them to make that way a realm of perpetual and ever increasing joy to both parties concerned1 throughout its entire course1 their whole lives long4 ,be it said1 then1 first1 that it is the duty of every bride and groom1 before they engage in sexual commerce with each other1 to acquaint themselves thoroughly with the anatomy and physiology of the sex organs of human beings1 both male and female1 and to make the acquirement of such knowledge as dispassionate and matter-of-fact an affair as though they were studying the nature1 construction and functions of the stomach1 or the digestive processes entire1 or the nature and use of any of the other bodily organs4 ,clear and clean am ,i within and without2 clear and clean is every scrap and part of me1 and no part shall be held more sacred or preferred above another4 ,for divine am ,i1 and all ,i am1 or contain4 ,now the normal young man or woman would do just this1 would pursue a study of sex in this way1 were it not for the fact that they have been taught1 time out of mind1 that to do this is immodest1 not to say indecent or positively wicked4 ,they have longed to be possessed of such knowledge1 all their lives2 in most cases more than any other form of wisdom that it was possible for them to make their own4 ,but its acquirement has been placed beyond their possible reach1 and it is only by the most clandestine and often nasty means that they have attained what little they know4 ,but the quotation made in the last paragraph1 sounds the key note of what is right in this matter1 and the first effort made by the reader of these pages should be to establish in himself or herself the condition of mind which these lines embody4 ,and it had better be said1 right here1 that for most young people this will be found to be no easy thing to do4 ,nor should the reader feel ashamed or chagrined1 or at odds with himself or herself if he or she finds such condition of affairs existing in his or her case4 ,for it is nothing for which they are to blame4 ,it is a misfortune and not a fault4 ,it is only the result of inherited and inculcated 7the word inculcated means kicked in7 ideas to which all well bred youths have been subjected for centuries2 the idea being that the closer they were kept in the realm of innocence1 which is only another name for ignorance1 the better bred they are4 ,and to pry one's self loose1 to break or tear one's self away from such a mental view and condition as heredity and such years of rigorous restraint have developed1 is no small task4 ,indeed1 it often takes months1 and sometimes years1 wholly to rid one's self of these deep seated and powerful1 wrong views and prejudices4 ,remember this3 that to the pure all things are pure4 ,but do not make the mistake of thinking that this much abused sentence means that purity means emptiness6 ,it does no such thing4 ,on the contrary1 it means fullness1 to perfection4 ,it means that one should be possessed of the right kind of stuff1 and that the stuff should be of supreme quality4 ,so1 in studying to obtain a knowledge of sex organs and sex functions1 in the human family1 the reader should not try to divest himself or herself of all sex-passion and desire2 but1 on the contrary1 to make these of a sort of which he or she can be proud1 rather than ashamed of1 rejoice in1 rather than suffer from4 ,so1 then1 let the reader of these lines1 first1 get a correct mental attitude toward what is about to be said4 ,banish all prurient curiosity1 put aside all thought of shame or shock1 7these two will be hardest for young women to overcome1 because of their training in false modesty and prudishness7 and endeavor to approach the subject in a reverent1 open-eyed1 conscientious spirit1 as one who wishes1 above everything else1 to know the honest truth in these most essential matters that pertain to human life4 ,get into this frame of mind1 and keep in it1 and what is here written will be read with both pleasure and profit4 ,once more1 for we must make haste slowly in these delicate affairs1 if the reader should find himself or herself unduly excited1 or perhaps shocked1 while reading some parts of what is here written1 so that the heart beats too fast1 or the hand trembles1 it may be well to suspend the reading for a time1 divert the mind into other channels for a while1 and resume the reading after one has regained poise and mastery of one's self4 ,that is1 keep your head while you read these lessons1 and you will be all right4 ,,iv ,,the ,,sex ,,organs ,and now1 having given these cautionary directions1 the way is clear for the making of definite statements and the giving of positive instruction4 ,here1 then1 is a brief description of the sex organs in man and woman4 ,at first1 only the names of the parts will be given1 with such slight comments and explanations as are necessary for making this part of the subject clear4 ,a detailed setting forth of the functions and proper exercise of these organs will be given later4 ,the sex organs in a male human being consists1 broadly speaking1 of the penis and the testicles4 ,all these are located at the base of the abdomen1 between the thighs and on the forward part of the body4 ,the penis is a fleshy1 muscular organ1 filled with most sensitive nerves1 and blood vessels that are capable of extension to a much greater degree than any of their similars in other parts of the body4 ,in a quiescent1 or unexcited condition1 in the average man1 this organ is from three to four inches long and about an inch or more in diameter4 ,it hangs limp and pendent in this state1 retired and in evidence not at all4 ,in its excited1 or tumescent condition 7the word tumescent means swelled1 and is the technical word for describing the erect condition of the penis7 it becomes enlarged and rigid1 its size in this state being1 on an average1 six or seven inches long1 and from an inch-and-a-half to two inches in diameter4 ,it is almost perfectly cylindrical1 slightly thicker at the base than at its forward part4 ,the testicles are two kidney shaped glands1 not far from the size of a large hickory nut1 and are contained in a sort of sack1 or pocket1 called the scrotum1 which is made for their comfortable and safe carrying4 ,the scrotum hangs directly between the thighs1 at the base of the penis1 and in it are the testicles1 suspended by vital cords that are suspended from the body above4 ,the left testicle hangs a little higher in the sack than the right1 so that1 in case the thighs are crowded together1 one testicle will slip over the other1 and so the danger of crushing them will be avoided4 ,this is one of the many ways which the ,maker of the human body has devised to insure the proper preservation of the vital organs from harm1 a fact which should inspire all human beings with profound reverence for this most wonderful of all life forms1 the beautiful human body1 the temple of the ,holy ,spirit4 ,the part of the body upon which the sex organs1 male and female1 are located is known as the pubic region4 ,it is covered with hair1 which1 in both sexes1 extends well up the lower belly4 ,this is known as pubic hair1 and in general corresponds in quality and quantity to the hair upon the individual head1 being coarse or fine1 soft or bristly1 to match1 the head covering1 in each case4 ,this hair is usually more or less curly1 and forms a covering an inch or more in depth over the whole pubic region1 extending back between the thighs slightly beyond the rectum4 ,in occasional cases this hair is straight and silky1 and sometimes grows to great length1 instances being known1 in some women1 where it has extended to the knees4 ,a well-grown and abundant supply of fine pubic hair is a possession highly prized by women1 of which they are justly proud1 though few of them would acknowledge the fact1 even to themselves4 ,none the less it is a fact4 ,the female sex organs1 speaking generally also1 are as follows3 ,the vulva1 or outward portion of the parts2 the vaginal passage2 the uterus1 or womb1 and the ovaries4 ,all but the first named lie within the body of the woman4 ,the vulva is made up of several parts which will be named and described later4 ,the vaginal passage is a tube1 or canal leading from the vulva to the womb4 ,in length and diameter it corresponds almost exactly with that of the penis1 being six or seven inches in depth1 and capable of a lateral extension which will readily admit the entrance of the male organ when the two are brought together4 ,the vaginal passage opens into1 and terminates in the uterine1 or womb cavity4 ,the womb is a pear shaped sack which is suspended in the womb cavity by cords and muscles from above4 ,it hangs1 neck downwards1 and is1 in its unimpregnated condition1 about two and a half inches in diameter at its upper1 or widest part1 tapering to a thin neck at its lower end4 ,it is hard and muscular in its quiescent state1 filled with delicate and most sensitive nerves and capacious blood vessels4 ,at its lower1 or neck end1 it opens directly into the vaginal passage4 ,the ovaries are two in number1 and are situated on each side of1 and above the womb1 in the region of the upper groins4 ,they are small1 fan shaped glands1 and are connected with the uterus by small ducts which are known as the fallopian tubes4 ,as already stated1 the exterior parts of the body1 in which the female sex organs are located1 are covered with hair for their adornment and protection4 ,such in brief1 are the male and female sex organs in human beings4 ,a further description of them and their functions and proper use we are now ready to consider4 ,v ,,the ,,function ,,of ,,the ,,sex ,,organs ,it hardly need be stated here1 for it is a matter of common knowledge1 that the primary purpose of sex in the human family is the reproduction of the race4 ,in this respect1 considered merely on its material1 or animal side1 mankind differs little from all other forms of animate life4 ,as ,whitman says1 we see everywhere sex1 everywhere the urge of procreation4 ,the flowers are possessed of this quality1 and with them all vegetable forms4 ,in the animal kingdom the same is true4 ,always male and female is everything created4 ,and the chief facts in reproduction are practically the same wherever the phenomena occur4 ,here1 as everywhere else in the world1 when a new life-form appears1 it is always the result of the union of two forces1 elements1 germs or whatsoever4 ,these two elements differ in nature and in function1 and each is incomplete and worthless by itself4 ,it is only by the combining of the two that any new result is obtained4 ,it is this fact that has led to the most suggestive and beautiful phrase ,the duality of all unity in nature4 ,many centuries ago an old ,latin philosopher wrote the now celebrated phrase1 ,omne ex ovo1 which1 translated1 means everything is from an egg4 ,this is practically true of all life-forms4 ,their beginning is always from an ovum1 or egg4 ,in this respect1 the reproduction of human beings is the same as that of any other life-form4 ,now in this process of producing a new life-form1 the female is always the source of the egg1 out of which the new creation is to come4 ,this egg1 however1 is infertile of itself1 and must be given life to1 by mingling with its germ1 an element which only the male can produce and supply4 ,this element is technically known as a sperm1 or a spermatozoa4 ,its function is to fertilize the dormant germ in the egg produced by the female1 and thus to start a new and independent life-form4 ,this life-form1 thus started1 grows according to the laws of its becoming more and more1 until1 at the expiration of a fixed period1 which varies greatly in different animals1 it becomes a complete young individual1 of the nature and kind of its parents4 ,the fertilization of the ovum in the female is called conception2 its growing state is called gestation1 and its birth1 on becoming a separate being1 is called parturition4 ,in its growing condition1 and before its birth1 the new young life form is known as the foetus4 ,now it is the fertilization of the ovum in the female 7and from now on1 it is only of the male and female in the human family that mention will be made7 by the male1 in the woman1 by the man1 that is of supreme interest and importance to both the parties concerned in producing this result4 ,how this is brought about is substantially as follows3 ,as already stated1 the infertile ovum1 or egg1 is produced by the woman4 ,such production begins at what is known as the age of puberty1 or when the hair begins to grow upon the pubic parts of the female body4 ,the time of the appearance of this phenomenon in feminine life varies from the age of nine or ten years to fifteen or sixteen4 ,the average1 for most girls1 is fourteen years of age4 ,at this time the formation of ova1 or eggs1 in the female body begins1 and it continues1 in most women1 at regular intervals of once in twenty-eight days1 except during pregnancy and lactation1 for a period of about thirty years4 ,during all this time1 under favorable conditions1 it is possible for the ovum produced by the woman to become fertilized1 if it can meet the sperm of the male4 ,in a general way1 this meeting of the infertile ovum of the woman with the sperm of the man can be brought about1 as follows3 ,the ova are produced by the ovaries 7the word ovaries means egg producers7 where they slowly develop from cells which originate in these glands4 ,when they have reached maturity1 or are ready for fertilization1 they pass out of the ovaries and down into the womb1 by way of the fallopian tubes4 ,as already stated1 such passage of the ova from the ovaries into the womb occurs every twenty-eight days1 and it is accomplished by a more or less copious flow of blood1 a sort of hemorrhage1 which carries the ova down through the fallopian tubes1 and deposits them in the womb4 ,this blood1 after performing its mission of carrying the ova down into the womb1 escapes from the body through the vaginal passage and is cared for by the wearing of a bandage between the thighs4 ,this flow of blood continues for about five days1 and is known as a menstrual flow2 and this time in a woman's life is known as the menstrual period4 ,it is so named because of the regularity of its recurrence1 the word mensa meaning a month4 ,in common parlance1 these periods are often spoke of as the monthlies4 ,after the ovum has reached the womb it remains there for a period of about ten days1 after which1 if it is not fertilized during that time1 it passes out of the womb into the vaginal passage1 and so out of the body4 ,but if1 at any time after it is ripe for fertilization1 that is1 from the time it begins its journey from the ovaries to the womb1 and while it is in the womb1 the ovum is met by the male sperm1 it is liable to become fertilized--conception is possible4 ,these are facts of the utmost importance1 to be thoroughly understood and kept well in mind by all married people who would live happily together1 as will be hereafter shown4 ,so much regarding the female part of the meeting of the ovum and the sperm4 ,the male part of this mutual act is as follows3 ,the sperm1 or spermatozoa1 originate in the testicles4 ,each sperm is an individual entity and several thousands of them are produced and in readiness for use1 at each meeting of the male and female generative organs2 and if any one of the countless number comes in contact with the unfertilized ovum in the womb1 conception is liable to result4 ,these sperms are so small that they are not visible to the naked eye1 but they are readily seen by the use of a microscope4 ,in shape they much resemble tad-poles in their earliest stages4 ,at the base of the penis1 well up in the man's body1 there is a large gland which surrounds the penis like a thick ring1 and which is called the prostate gland4 ,it secretes a mucous fluid which looks much like1 and is about the consistency of the white of an egg4 ,close to this gland1 and almost a part of it1 is a sack1 or pocket1 into which the mucous secretion from the prostate gland is poured1 and where it is kept1 ready for use1 in performing its part of the germinal act4 ,now it is the business of this mucous fluid1 which comes from the prostate gland1 to form a carrying medium for the spermatozoa which originate in the testicles4 ,there are small ducts leading from the testicles into the pocket which contains the prostate fluid4 ,these are known as the seminal ducts1 and through them the spermatozoa pass from the testicles into the prostate pocket4 ,here they mingle with the prostate fluid1 in which they can move about freely1 and by means of which they can be carried wherever this fluid goes4 ,the combination of prostate fluid and spermatozoa is called semen4 ,seen under a microscope1 a single drop of semen reveals a multitude of spermatozoa swimming about in the prostate-carrying medium4 ,it is in this form that the vitalizing male element meets the female infertile ovum4 ,this mass of live and moving germs is poured all around and about the region in which the ovum lies waiting to be fertilized1 and every one of them seems to be rushing about like mad to find what it is sent to do1 namely1 to meet and fertilize the ovum4 ,the manner of depositing the semen where it can come in contact with the ovum is as follows3 ,in order that this mingling of the male and female sources of life may be possible1 it is necessary that there be a union of the male and the female generative organs4 ,for such meeting1 the penis is filled with blood1 all its blood vessels being distended to their utmost capacity1 till the organ becomes stout and hard1 and several times its dormant size1 as has been already told4 ,in this condition it is able to penetrate1 to its utmost depths1 the vaginal passage of the female1 which is of a nature to perfectly contain the male organ in this enlarged and rigid condition4 ,under such conditions1 the penis is inserted into the widened and distended vaginal passage4 ,once together1 a mutual back and forth1 or partly in and out movement1 of the organs is begun and carried on by the man and woman1 which action further enlarges the parts and raises them to a still higher degree of tension and excitement4 ,it is supposed by some that this frictional movement of the parts develops an electrical current1 which increases in tension as the act is continued2 and that it is the mission of the pubic hair1 which is a non-conductor1 to confine these currents to the parts in contact4 ,now there are two other glands in these organs2 one in the male and one in the female1 which performs a most wonderful function in this part of the sexual act4 ,these are the glans penis in the male and the clitoris in the female4 ,the first is located at the apex of the male organ1 and the other at the upper-middle and exterior part of the vulva4 ,these glands are covered with a most delicate cuticle1 and are filled with highly sensitive nerves4 ,as the act progresses1 these glands become more and more sensitized1 and nervously surcharged1 until1 as a climax1 they finally cause a sort of nervous explosion of the organs involved4 ,this climax is called an orgasm in scientific language4 ,among most men and women it is spoken of as spending4 ,on the part of the man1 this orgasm causes the semen1 which till this instant has remained in the prostate pocket1 to be suddenly driven out of this place of deposit1 and thrown in jets1 and with spasmodic force1 through the entire length of the penis1 and1 as it were1 shot into the vaginal passage and the uterine cavity1 till the whole region is literally deluged with the life-giving fluid4 ,at the same time1 the mouth of the womb opens wide2 and into it pours1 or rushes1 this father stuff1 entirely surrounding and flooding the ovum1 if it be in the womb4 ,this is the climax of the sexual act1 which is called coitus1 a word which means1 going together4 ,with the myriads of spermatozoa swarming about it1 if the vital part of the ovum comes in contact with some one of them1 any one of which1 brought into such contact1 will fertilize it1 conception results4 ,the woman is then pregnant1 and the period of gestation is begun4 ,this is a brief description of the act of coitus and of the means by which pregnancy takes place4 ,it is1 however1 only a small part of the story of the sex relations of husbands and wives2 and1 be it said1 a very small part of that1 as will now be shown4 ,as has already been said1 this use of the sex organs1 merely to produce progeny1 and so insure a continuance of the race1 is a quality that mankind shares with all the rest of the animal kingdom4 ,in all essentials1 so far as the material parts of the act are concerned1 the beginnings of the new life in the human family differ not a whit from that of any other mammals4 ,in each case the ovum is produced by the ovaries of the female1 passes into the womb1 is there met by the semen from the male1 fertilized by the spermatozoa1 and so the foetus gets its start4 ,this is the universal means by which the beginnings of all animal reproductive life takes place4 ,but there is another phase in the sex life of human beings1 which is entirely different from that of all other animals1 and which must therefore be considered beyond all that needs to be said regarding the act of coitus for reproductive purposes only4 ,this we are now ready to consider and study4 ,now in all animals1 except human beings1 the act of coitus is only permitted by the female1 7it would seem is only possible for her7 when the ovum is present in the womb and ready to be fertilized4 ,at all other times1 all female animals1 except woman1 are practically sexless4 ,their sexual organs are dormant1 and nothing can arouse them to activity4 ,not only do they fail to show any desire for coitus1 but if an attempt should be made to force it upon them1 they would resist it to the utmost of their strength4 ,but when the ovum is present in the womb1 these same female animals are beside themselves with desire for coitus4 ,they are then spoken of as in heat4 ,and until they are satisfied1 by meeting the male and procuring from him the vitalizing fluid which will fertilize their infertile ovum2 or1 failing in this1 until the ovum passes away from them1 out of the womb1 they know no rest4 ,at such times they will run all risks1 incur all sorts of danger1 do every possible thing to secure pregnancy4 ,the thousand-and-one ways which female animals use to make known to their male mates their sexual desire and needs1 when in heat1 is a most interesting and wonderful story1 a record made up of facts which would be well worth any student's knowing4 ,but as all such knowledge can readily be procured from books which are within the reach of all1 there is no need of noting the data here4 ,but now1 in woman1 all these things are different6 ,as a matter of fact1 the presence of the ovum in the womb of a normally made woman makes little1 and1 in many cases1 no difference whatever as regards her status concerning the act of coitus6 ,that is1 women are never in heat1 in the same sense in which other female animals are4 ,to be sure1 in some cases1 though they are rare1 some women are conscious of a greater desire for coitus just after the ceasing of the menstrual flow2 that is1 when the ovum is in the womb4 ,but such cases are so infrequent that they may well be counted atavistic1 that is1 of the nature of a tendency to return to a previous merely animal condition4 ,for the most part1 it is true of all normal women that the presence of the ovum in the womb makes little difference1 one way or another1 in regard to their desire for1 or aversion to1 the act of coitus4 ,now the fact of this remarkable difference in the sex-status of women and the same quality in all other female animals leads us to a great number of interesting1 not to say startling1 conclusions1 some of which are as follows3 ,in the first place1 the phenomenon clearly establishes the fact that sex in the female human being differs1 pronouncedly1 from that of all other female life4 ,for1 whereas1 among all females except woman1 coitus is impossible1 except at certain times and seasons1 among women the act can not only be permitted1 but is as much possible or desired at one time as any other1 regardless of the presence or absence of the ovum in the womb4 ,that is 7and this point should be noted well by the reader7 there is a possibility1 on the part of the female humanity1 for coitus1 under conditions that do not at all obtain in any other female animal life4 ,this is a conclusion which is of such far-reaching importance that its limits are but dimly recognized1 even in the clear thinking of most married people4 ,the fact of such difference is known to them1 and their practices in living conform to the conditions2 but what it all means1 they are entirely ignorant of1 and they never stop to think about it4 ,and yet1 right here is the very center and core of the real success or failure of married life6 ,around this fact are grouped all the troubles that come to husbands and wives4 ,about it are gathered all the joys and unspeakable delights of the happily married--the only truly married4 ,it is these items which make a knowledge of the real conditions which exist1 regarding this part of married life1 of such supreme importance4 ,if these conditions could be rightly understood1 and the actions of husbands and wives could be brought to conform to the laws which obtain under them1 the divorce courts would go out of business1 their occupation1 like ,othello's1 would be gone indeed4 ,the first conclusion1 then1 one that is forced upon the thoughtful mind by the fact of this difference in the sex possibilities of women and other female animals1 is1 as already stated1 but which is here repeated for emphasis1 that coitus can be engaged in by women when pregnancy is not its purpose1 on her part2 and that this never occurs in any other form of female life6 ,in view of this fact1 is it too much to raise the question whether or not sex in woman is designed to fulfill any other purpose than that of the reproduction of the race8 ,true it is1 that the only function of sex in all other females is merely that of producing offspring--of perpetuating its kind4 ,under no circumstances does it ever serve any other end1 fulfill any other design4 ,there is no possibility of its doing so6 ,but one can help wondering if it is not true that1 with the existence of the possibility of engaging in coitus at will1 rather than at the bidding of instinct alone1 there has also come a new and added function for the sex-natures that are capable of engaging in such before-unknown experiences8 ,to a fair-minded person1 such conclusion seems not only logical1 but irresistible6 ,that is in view of this conclusion1 it naturally follows that sex in the human family is positively designed to fulfill a function that is entirely unknown to all other forms of animal life4 ,and from this1 it is but a step to the establishment of the fact that sex exercise in the human family serves a purpose other than that of reproduction6 ,now1 this fact established1 a whole world of new issues arises and demands settlement4 ,among these1 comes the supreme question3 ,what is the nature of this new experience that has been conferred upon human beings1 over and above what is vouchsafed to any other form of animal life8 ,what purpose can it serve8 ,how can it be properly exercised8 ,what is right and what is wrong under these new possibilities8 ,these are some of the issues that force themselves upon all thoughtful people1 those who wish to do right under any and all circumstances in which they are placed4 ,of course1 here as elsewhere1 the unthinking1 the happy-go-lucky and the don't-give-a-damn1 can blunder along in almost any-old-way4 ,but they can1 and will1 reap only the reward which always follows blundering and ignorance4 ,in these days of scientific clear-thinking1 we have come to understand that salvation from sin comes by the way of positive knowledge and not at the hands of either ignorance or innocence6 ,if husbands and wives ever attain to the highest conditions of married life1 it can only be after they know and practice1 what is right in all their sex relations1 both for reproductive purposes and in all other respects6 ,note that well6 ,as things are now1 especially in all civilized countries1 and particularly among ,christian people1 this secondary function of sex in the human family1 while blindly recognized as a fact1 is none the less abused1 to a most shameful degree4 ,for ages1 the whole situation has been left in a condition of most deplorable1 not to say damnable1 ignorance2 and no honest endeavor has been made to find out and act up to the truth in the premises4 ,husbands and wives have engaged in coitus ad libitum1 utterly regardless of whether it was right or wrong for them to do so6 ,they have taken it for granted that marriage conferred on them the right to have sexual intercourse whenever they chose1 7especially when the man chose17 and they have acted accordingly4 ,this is especially true of men1 and the practice has been carried to such length that the right of a man to engage in coitus with his wife has been established by law1 and the wife who refuses to yield this right to her husband can be divorced by him1 if she persists in such way of living6 ,it is such a fact as this which caused ,mr4 ,bernard ,shaw to write3 ,marriage is the most licentious institution in all the world4 ,and he might rightfully have added it is also the most brutal1 though it is an insult to the brute to say it that way1 for brutes are never guilty of coitus under compulsion4 ,but a husband can force his wife to submit to his sexual embraces1 and she has no legal right to say him nay6 ,this doesn't seem quite right1 does it8 ,now there are several different ways of viewing this new and added sexual possibility in the human family1 namely1 the act of coitus for other than reproductive purposes4 ,the ,catholic church has always counted it as a sin4 ,popes have issued edicts regarding it1 and conclaves of ,bishops have discussed it and passed resolutions regarding it4 ,there has always been a difference of opinion upon the subject amongst these dignitaries and authorities1 but they all agree in one respect1 namely1 that it is a sin4 ,the only point of difference has been as to the extent or enormity of the sin6 ,by some it has been reckoned as a deadly sin1 punishable by eternal hell fire1 if not duly absolved before death2 by others it has been held to be only a venial sin1 one that must always be confessed to the priest when coitus is engaged in1 and which can be pardoned by the practice of due penance4 ,but1 always1 it was a sin6 ,the ,protestant church has never issued edicts regarding this matter1 but1 for the most part1 it has tacitly held to the ,catholic teaching in theory1 while universally practicing the reverse1 in actual married life4 ,protestants have looked upon it as a necessity1 but have taught that it was regrettable that such was the case4 ,they have held1 with ,paul1 that1 it is better to marry than to burn4 ,and most of them have chosen the marriage horn of the dilemma4 ,among some ,european nations1 attempts have been made to make it impossible for husbands and wives to cohabit except for reproductive purposes4 ,in one of these nations1 padlocks were used for preventing the act4 ,a slit was made through the foreskin of the penis1 and through this slit the ring of a padlock was passed1 much as an ear-ring is passed through the lobe of a lady's ear4 ,the padlock was made so large that it could not be introduced into the vaginal passage1 and so coitus was impossible when it was worn4 ,it could only be removed by the magistrate into whose hands the regulation of this part of the citizens' life was given4 ,specimens of these padlocks are still to be seen in ,european museums4 ,now the terribly immoral thing in all this way of living has always been the fact that it compelled people to continually violate their consciences1 by pretending to believe one thing and constantly practicing the reverse of their proclaimed belief4 ,that is1 it lured them into living a continual lie1 and such can never be for the good of the soul6 ,it goes without saying that the sooner this abominable way of living can be ended1 the better it will be for all parties concerned--the individuals who are the victims of such falsehood1 and the communities of which they form a part4 ,from all this it follows that the first thing every new husband and wife ought to do is to settle clearly in their own minds the issue as to whether it is right or wrong for them to engage in coitus for any other than procreative purposes4 ,having settled this point1 one way or the other1 then let them conscientiously act accordingly4 ,for only so can they live righteous lives6 ,in settling this point1 so far as available authorities for the young people to study and consider are concerned1 these are all against coitus except for begetting of off-spring4 ,all the purity writers and ,purity ,societies are ranged together on the negative side4 ,likewise are all the books of advice to young wives and husbands1 especially those addressed to young wives4 ,now all these authorities base their whole argument upon the purely animal facts in the premises4 ,probably a certain ,dr4 ,c4 is more largely read for information on these matters than any other author1 especially among young women4 ,he has written a large1 and from the view-point he takes1 a very plausible volume2 and it is very extensively advertised1 especially in papers which young women read4 ,the result is that it has come to be almost a standard authority in these affairs4 ,dr4 ,c4's argument is1 baldly1 as follows3--7a7 ,among animals1 the universal practice is a single act of coitus for each begetting of off-spring1 7b7 ,human beings are animals1 7c7 ,therefore1 human beings should only engage in coitus for reproductive purposes4 ,to this syllogism he adds a corollary1 which is1 that1 therefore1 all sexual commerce in the human family1 for any other than reproductive purposes1 is wrong4 ,these are his texts1 so to speak1 and through several hundred pages he preaches1 don't1 don't1 don't1 sermons4 ,the entire volume is one of denial and prohibition4 ,he proclaims the act1 even for the one purpose he allows to be right1 as low1 and in itself degrading1 to be engaged in only after prayer and fasting and mortifying the flesh1 and even then1 in the most passionless1 and only done-because-it-has-to-be manner2 as a mere matter of duty2 to be permitted by sufferance2 joyless1 disgusting in itself2 a something to be avoided1 even in thought1 other than it is a necessity for the continuance of the race4 ,it is from such data as this that thousands of innocent brides annually make up their minds as to what is right or wrong in the matter of sexual intercourse4 ,in doing this1 most of these young women are perfectly conscientious1 and want to do the right thing1 and there are two items in the count that naturally lead them to accept ,dr4 ,c4's teachings as correct4 ,the first is1 that it coincides with all they have ever heard about such matters2 the second1 that the ,doctor flavors all his text with a religious quality1 of the alleged most sacred sort4 ,he instances saintly women who have lived the most ascetic lives1 and whose religious status was achieved because1 and by means of1 their perfect chastity4 ,in fact1 this word chastity 7which he translates as entire renunciation of the whole sex nature7 becomes the test word of his whole treatise1 and its practice is upheld as the true road to all goodness and virtue4 ,now1 nearly all well-bred and cultivated young women are naturally religious 7and not a word should be said against their being so7 and they are anxious to time their lives to everything that the highest religious demands prescribe4 ,it is1 therefore1 most natural that1 being thus taught by an authority for which they have the highest regard1 they enter marriage with the fixed opinion in accordance with their teaching4 ,how could it be otherwise8 ,on the other hand1 a few young husbands1 indeed none but now and then a goody-good 7who usually turns out to be the worst of the whole lot1 in course of time71 are willing to stand for any such theory1 much less to live any such life as this theory would impose4 ,these don't care what the book says1 and1 from the manner of their bringing up1 from all they have learned or heard by hearing men talk about married life1 7which is usually of the most vulgar sort7 they have come to the conclusion that marriage confers upon the parties the right to engage in sexual commerce at will2 and1 especially1 that the husband has the right to the body of his wife whenever he chooses4 ,for1 indeed1 does not the law give him that right6 ,and so long as one keeps inside the law what more could be asked6 ,yea1 verily6 ,what more could be asked8 ,so it is that most brides and bridegrooms go to their marriage bed with the most widely diverse views as to what is right and wrong in the premises--as to the life they will lead in their new estate4 ,the young wife is for purity and chastity4 ,the young husband1 driven by a passion which he has long held in thrall1 in the belief that he can now give the fullest vent to it1 when he has got where such relief is possible1 is like an excited hound when it seizes its prey1 which he fully believes he has the right to deal with as he pleases6 ,what wonder that1 in view of all these circumstances1 the most extensive observer of marriage-bed phenomena should write3 ,as a matter of fact1 nine young husbands in ten practically rape their brides at their first sexual meeting4 ,could anything be more horrible1 or criminally wicked8 ,and it is all so needless6 ,it is all the result of ignorance1 of innocence1 and the worst of false teaching4 ,the pity of it6 ,true1 these unfortunate conditions are often modified by mother nature1 who inspires the bride with curiosity1 which1 in a measure1 controls her in spite of her false teachings1 and with passion1 which1 to a degree1 will assert itself over and above all false modesty1 her religious scruples and her fear of pregnancy2 and so she may come through the ordeal of introduction to the act of coitus in a fairly sane condition of mind1 even though she may have practically been raped6 ,but1 too often1 the result of such first contact is a shock to the bride from which she may not recover during all the subsequent years of married life6 ,and here is where the trouble lies1 for untold thousands of married men and women1 all over the civilized world1 to-day4 ,and it might all be so different6 ,it ought1 in every case1 to be all so different6 ,but if it ever does become different1 knowledge has got to take the place of innocence on the part of the bride1 and of ignorance on the part of the bridegroom1 both of whom must be taught to ,know what they are about before they engage in the sexual act1 and be able to meet each other sanely1 righteously1 lovingly1 because they both desire what each has to give to the other2 in a way in which neither claims any rights1 or makes any demands of the other--in a word1 in perfect concord of agreement and action1 of which mutual love is the inspirer1 and definite knowledge the directive agent4 ,such a first meeting of bride and bridegroom will be no raping affair4 ,there will be no shock in it1 no dread1 no shame or thought of shame2 but as perfectly as two drops of water flow together and become one1 the bodies and souls of the parties to the act will mingle in a unity the most perfect and blissful that can ever be experienced by human beings in this world4 ,this is no dream6 ,it is a most blessed reality1 which all normally made husbands and wives can attain to1 if only they are properly taught and educated1 if only they will learn how to reach such blissful condition4 ,however1 such greatly desired status is not to be had for the asking merely4 ,instinct can never bring it about2 innocence will never yield such a result2 and force1 or the declaration of a right in the premises will forever banish it to the realm of the never-to-be-realized4 ,it can only come as a result of clear-headed thinking1 scientific investigation1 honest study1 wise and righteous action under the given conditions2 and1 above all1 a love1 each for the other1 that knows no bounds4 ,all these things must obtain1 on the part of both parties concerned1 or the desired results can never be attained4 ,having said which1 here shall follow some suggestions as to how such estate may be reached by the readers of these pages4 ,but first1 let us finish ,dr4 ,c41 and all of his tribe--banish them from all our reckoning in these matters1 forever4 ,as already shown1 this argument has not a leg to stand on4 ,these writers treat the whole situation as though men and women were mere animals6 ,men and women are far more than mere animals1 and ,god hath made them so6 ,and for these reasons we will have respect for men and women as ,god has made them1 rather than as ,dr4 ,c4 and the purity leagues say ,god should have made them6 ,as a matter of fact1 the secondary function of sex in the human family is something far above mere animality2 it is something that mere animals know nothing about1 that they can never experience1 or in any way attain to1 and these fundamental differences in the premises remove the whole issue from the realm of comparison with any forms or functions of mere animal life4 ,as well reason that animals never eat cooked food1 and so men ought never to eat cooked food 7and there are some people who do so reason1 strange to say7 or that animals do not wear clothes1 and so men ought not to wear clothes--as well make these1 or a score more of comparisons1 between the human race and mere animals1 as to try to compare them in the item of their sex functions4 ,in only the single fact that1 on the physical plane merely1 coitus for the purpose of procreation is common to all animal life1 mankind included1 is there a point of comparison between humanity and the brute creation4 ,beyond that point there is nothing comparable between the two6 ,as well say that because beasts can hear1 therefore they can comprehend and enjoy a ,beethoven ,sonata1 or because they have eyes they can delight in a picture by ,corot6 ,this is only another way of saying that sex has functions and uses in the human family that are entirely apart from the possibilities of all other animal life--functions as much above mere animality as music is above mere physical hearing1 as painting above mere physical sight4 ,these facts forever upset and overthrow all the theories of ,dr4 ,c4 and ,co41 they entirely eliminate the whole bunch from any part or lot in the issue on which they have essayed to speak with such authority1 but whose main point1 whose essential elements they have entirely misunderstood1 and hence have treated in a way that is wholly at variance with the truth in the premises1 and it is the truth that we are looking for4 ,once more 7for it is well to go to the bottom of this matter while we are about it7 the honest truth is1 that it is the universal practice of the human race for men and women to cohabit for other purposes than reproduction1 and it has always been so1 since men and women were men and women6 ,it is true among the most savage and barbarous tribes of the earth1 and it is more emphatically true of the highly civilized people in all lands and climes4 ,and is it reasonable to suppose that such a universal phenomenon should not have been intended to be as it is6 ,as well say that appetite for food is a mistake1 one that ought to be eliminated6 ,again1 the experiences of men and women1 all over the world1 prove that1 where this act is engaged in properly1 according to the laws that obtain in the premises1 it conduces to the highest physical1 mental1 and spiritual well-being of the parties concerned4 ,indeed1 it is beyond doubt true that the men and women who have never known this most perfect of all human experiences1 have never reached the summit of human attainment1 have never arrived at the perfection of manhood and womanhood4 ,length of life1 health of the highest sort1 and happiness1 the most delectable--all come1 these and more1 to men and women by this route1 if it is rightly traveled4 ,hell and damnation result if that road is wrongly trod6 ,and that's what makes the manner of traveling it so important4 ,,vi ,,the ,,act ,,of ,,coitus ,strictly speaking1 the act of coitus should be considered as composed of four parts1 or acts1 of one common play1 or drama4 ,not that there is a sharp line of demarcation between each act or part1 for the four really blend into one composite whole1 when taken together1 seriatim2 but there are four phases of the act which may well be studied separately1 in making a detailed review of a sexual meeting of a man and a woman4 ,these four parts are3 first1 the preparation for the act2 second1 the union of the organs2 third1 the motion of the organs2 fourth1 the orgasm4 ,in what immediately follows1 these four stages of the act of coitus will be studied and traced in detail1 with the utmost care1 in the hope that such pursuit may result in the best possible good to the student4 ,regarding the first part of the act1 let it be said that here1 above all other situations in the world haste makes waste4 ,put that down as the most fundamental fact in this whole affair6 ,right here is where ninety-nine one-hundredths of all the troubles of married life begin6 ,and the fault1 right here1 is usually 7though not always7 with the husband6 ,but he doesn't mean to be bad4 ,not once in a thousand times does he deliberately purpose to do wrong4 ,he is simply the victim of undirected and ungoverned passion1 and of an ignorance which results in stupid blundering1 or carelessness1 or thoughtlessness4 ,what such a husband practically does is to rush blindly and furiously along a way he knows nothing of1 but which he has been led to think he has a right to travel when and how he will6 ,the ordinary figure of a bull in a china shop can but faintly describe the smashing and grinding to powder of the most delicate situation that can occur in all human experiences1 that result from such action as this4 ,ideals that have touched heaven are tumbled from their lofty places and ruthlessly crushed to atoms2 hopes that were beyond the power of words to express go out in despair2 dreams become a hideous nightmare2 and love1 which was as pure as crystal waters1 is muddied1 befouled1 and made into a cesspool6 ,and all this because of ignorance or careless hurrying1 of making haste where the utmost of time1 caution and intelligent care should have obtained6 ,as has already been explained1 when the act of coitus is to be engaged in1 the sex organs of both the man and the woman undergo great changes4 ,blood rushes to all these parts1 in copious quantities1 till they become gorged4 ,the result is that the penis is enlarged to several times its dormant size1 and the vulva and vagina should1 and will1 under right conditions1 undergo similar changes and transformation4 ,but there is usually a great difference in the length of time it takes for these changes to take place in men and women4 ,on the part of the man1 as soon as his passion is aroused to any considerable extent1 the penis at once makes itself ready for action4 ,it tumesces1 or swells itself hard1 almost instantly2 and1 so far as its mere physical stoutness is concerned1 is as ready to enter the vagina then as ever1 even if it has to force itself in4 ,on the other hand1 the tumescence of the parts in women is usually1 7especially as girls are reared7 not infrequently1 a matter of considerable time1 not infrequently several minutes1 and now and then1 of half-an-hour or more6 ,this is not always so1 for in some very passionate women they are ready for action almost instantly4 ,indeed1 there are some women whose sex organs tumesce if they 7the women7 even touch a man--any man--and occasionally a case occurs where a woman will experience an orgasm if her clothing brushes against a man6 ,such cases are1 of course1 abnormal4 ,but1 for the most part1 it is true that women are much slower in making ready for the sexual act than men are4 ,again1 as the organs become ready for the act1 nature has provided a most wonderful means for bringing about their easy and happy union4 ,both the male and female organs secrete and emit1 or pour out1 a sort of lubricating fluid which covers and sometimes almost floods the parts4 ,this is a clear and limpid substance1 that looks much like the white of an egg1 and is much like the saliva that is secreted in the mouth1 only it is a thicker substance4 ,chemically1 it is almost identical with saliva4 ,that generated by the man is called prostatic flow2 that produced by the woman pre-coital secretion4 ,now1 if time is given for this fluid to be secreted and exuded1 all the parts become covered or saturated with it1 and they are admirably equipped for easy union4 ,the glans penis is then covered with the slippery fluid1 and the vulva and all the walls of the vagina are laved with the substance4 ,at the same time1 the vaginal walls have widened and grown soft1 and all the parts of the vulva 7which are yet to be named and described in detail7 are in like condition4 ,the result is that1 though the penis be what might at first seem of such size as to make its entrance into the vagina impossible1 as a matter of fact1 such entrance is perfectly easy1 when the parts are fully ready to be joined4 ,but not before or otherwise6 ,so here is where the trouble comes4 ,if the husband is in haste1 if he does not wait for the wife to become ready to meet him2 if he forces his large1 hard penis into the vagina before either is fully ready for such union--when there is no prostatic fluid on its glans1 and the vagina is shrunken and its walls are dry--if coitus is engaged in in this way1 it is perfectly easy to see that only disaster can result6 ,the woman is hurt1 sometimes most cruelly1 and the man in reality gets only a beastly gratification from the act4 ,of all bad things in all the world1 such manner of coition is the worst6 ,and so1 in this first part of the act1 the one foremost thought to remember and observe is1 take plenty of time6 ,there is another reason why1 on the part of woman1 this time should be extended1 especially when she is a bride and inexperienced in these matters1 and that is1 that her innocence1 and all her education1 make her feel that she is doing wrong1 or at least permitting a wrong thing to be done1 and this holds back the proper growth of her passion1 hinders the tumescence of her sex organs1 delays the flow of the precoital secretion1 and so keeps her from becoming properly prepared for her share of the mutual act4 ,again1 her fear of pregnancy may still further retard her coming into a proper condition4 ,indeed1 this last is the almost common cause for her failing to be in readiness for meeting her husband4 ,all of which items must be taken into account by both husband and wife1 and intelligently1 lovingly dealt with1 if the best results for both parties are attained4 ,as regards the item of possible pregnancy1 special note will be made of this feature later on4 ,it is here placed in abeyance for the time being1 because its consideration can be better provided for after some other points have been studied4 ,now the one easily understood 7and as easily practiced as understood7 direction as to what to do by way of preparation for the act of coitus is3 do as lovers do when they are courting4 ,and everybody knows what that is6 ,and note this--that nobody ever hurries when they are courting6 ,they delay1 they protract1 they dilly-dally1 they fool around1 they pet each other in all sorts of possible and impossible ways4 ,they kiss each other--long and passionate kisses1 they again and again give and receive--they hug each other1 nestle into each other's arms--in a word1 they play together in a thousand-and-one ways which the goody-goods declare to be wrong1 and the cold-blooded call nonsense or foolishness1 but which all lovers know is an unspeakable delight 7unspeakable is the word1 for who wants to talk when these blissful experiences are going on674 ,now1 these things1 and the likes of these things1 in limitless supply1 should always precede the act of coitus4 ,it is right there that this part of the first act of this wonderful four-act drama or play should be wrought out1 and if they are omitted or disregarded1 the play will end in tragedy1 with all the leading actors left dead upon the stage6 ,now the chief1 if not the only1 reason why this part of the supreme act of married life is not always preluded in this way is found in the false view of what the marriage ceremony means1 and a wrong impression as to what it confers upon the parties who say yes to its prescriptions4 ,that is1 the common idea is1 that the taking of marriage vows bestows certain rights and imposes certain duties upon the new husband and wife4 ,it is thought that such ceremony makes certain acts right which would otherwise be wrong1 and that it establishes the right to engage in such acts1 with or without any further consultation or consent in the premises4 ,it makes love a matter of contract1 a something bound by promise and pledge rather than a free and unfettered effusion of the soul4 ,the result of this is that1 whereas1 before the marriage ceremony both the man and woman take the utmost care to do everything in their power to increase1 magnify1 and retain each other's love1 after they have been granted a license1 and the minister has put their hands together and prayed over them--after this1 they both think they have a cinch on each other1 that they are bound together by a bond that cannot be broken1 a tie so strong that it will need no further looking after1 but which will stay put of its own accord1 and which may therefore be let to shift for itself from the hour of its pronouncement6 ,nothing could be further from the truth than this is4 ,and yet it is a common feeling and belief among young married people6 ,nor is it any wonder that this should be so4 ,the very form of the marriage ceremony and contract tends to make it so4 ,the fact that marriage originated as a form of slavery1 and that much of its original status yet remains--all these things tend to establish these wrong ideas regarding the estate1 in the minds of the parties to it4 ,nor are the evils that come from such wrong view of marriage all confined to one side of the house4 ,on the contrary1 they are about evenly divided between husbands and wives1 witness a few illustrations1 as follows3 ,a couple had been married about a year4 ,they had no children1 nor were there prospects of any4 ,the husband was beginning to spend his evenings away from home1 leaving his wife alone4 ,one evening1 as he was making ready to go out1 his wife said3 ,what makes you go out evenings now1 and leave me alone6 ,you didn't use to do it6 ,and the husband replied3 ,why1 you don't do anything to make it interesting for me now6 ,you used to put on your prettiest clothes when ,i came to see you1 fixed up your hair bewitchingly1 had a smile for me that wouldn't come off1 would sing for me1 read to me1 sit on my lap and pet me and kiss me1 and now you never do anything of the kind4 ,and before he could say more1 the wife responded3 ,oh1 but we are married now1 and it's your duty to stay with me6 ,what wonder that the husband went out of the house1 slamming the door after him6 ,the wonder is that he ever came back4 ,again3 ,a woman who was a graduate of a famous ,eastern ,college and who had taught for a number of years1 who was from one of the first families in the east1 and was counted as a lady of the highest culture and refinement1 finally married a ,western business man4 ,on their bridal night1 as they were retiring1 the man laid his hand on the woman's bare shoulder1 and she threw it off1 and said3 ,don't be disgusting6 ,i married you because ,i was tired of taking care of myself1 or of having my relatives take care of me4 ,you are worth fifty thousand dollars1 and one-third of all that was made mine just as soon as the preacher got through his closing prayer1 and you can't help it6 ,that's the truth1 and we are married1 and you can make the best of it6 ,these are both truthful tales1 nor are they the only ones of the sort that could be told4 ,on the other hand1 these are matched with acts of ignorant and careless young husbands1 who do dastardly deeds to their brides because they think the law and the contract give them the right6 ,there is no need to go into details4 ,the whole evil is revealed by the words of the woman just quoted3 ,oh1 but we are married now4 ,these records1 and all like them1 lead to the remark that marriage confers no rights1 to either the bride or the bridegroom1 in the highest meaning of the word4 ,so far as its outward and formal observance is concerned1 marriage is merely a sort of protection for society which has grown up through the years1 and which is probably for the best1 for the present1 things being as they are4 ,but it should be well understood that it can never lead to true happiness if it is viewed and utilized merely on its legal and formal side4 ,true marriage is based on mutual love2 and mutual love can never be traded upon1 or made an item of formal agreement and contract4 ,people may contract to live together and to cohabit1 and they may faithfully carry out their agreements2 but this is not marriage6 ,it is simply legalized prostitution1 bargain and sale1 for a consideration4 ,it is blasphemy to call it by the sacred name of marriage6 ,truly does ,tennyson say3 ,free love will not be bound4 ,indeed it cannot be6 ,it must remain forever free if it stays at all4 ,and if the parties to it try to bind it1 the more chains1 fastenings1 pledges and agreements they put upon it1 the sooner and quicker will it escape from all its holdings and fly away and stay away6 ,and so1 to come back to where we left off 7for we said there should be no hurrying or haste here7 let married people understand that the key to married happiness is to keep on courting each other4 ,indeed1 to make courting continually grow to more and more4 ,during the whole extent of married life1 never neglect1 much less forget to be lovers1 and to show1 by all your acts1 that you are lovers1 and great shall be your reward4 ,don't ask how to do this6 ,you know how1 well enough4 ,do it6 ,and be careful not to do anything that a careful lover ought not to do6 ,this direction should be heeded by both husband and wife4 ,make yourself beautiful for your husband1 ,oh1 wife1 and keep yourself so4 ,as between the public1 or your friends1 or society1 give them what of yourself you can spare1 after you have given to your lover all that you can bestow upon him1 or he can wish you to bestow4 ,don't give to everybody and everything else1 church1 society1 work1 children1 friends1 or what-so-ever--don't give all of yourself to these1 and let your husband take what there is left4 ,don't do that1 as you value your married success and happiness6 ,don't say3 ,oh1 but we are married now1 and let it go at that6 ,the beautiful and delicate flowers of married love need to be watched and tended with the most skilful care1 continually1 by both husband and wife4 ,treated in this way1 they will not only be fragrant and lovely through all the years of wedded life2 but as1 one by one1 the blossoms shed their petals and change their forms so that luscious fruits may come in turn--as these changes take place1 new1 more beautiful and more fragrant flowers will continue to the very end of the longest married life4 ,don't ever forget this1 or doubt it1 as you hope for happiness in the marriage state6 ,mind what is here said1 and act accordingly all the time--days1 nights and ,sundays4 ,now if these truths are thoroughly inculcated1 kicked in so firmly and deeply that they will never jar loose or get away1 we will move on4 ,so1 then1 the first part of every act of coitus should always be a courting act1 in which there should be no haste1 but in which the parties should make delays1 as ,john ,burroughs says4 ,and this should be added3 that1 for married lovers1 courting has a far wider range of possibilities than it has for the unmarried4 ,previous to marriage1 there are conventionalities and clothes in the way6 ,after that1 neither of these need be in evidence1 and this makes a lot of difference1 and all in favor of the best results1 if rightly used1 and made the most of4 ,one hardly need to go into details here1 7though this may be done later on in this writing74 ,if the lovers will be as free with each other unclothed as clothed2 if they will utterly ignore all conventionalities1 and do with and for each other anything and everything that their impulses and inclinations suggest1 or their desires prompt2 if they will1 with the utmost abandon give themselves up to petting each other in every possible way that mother nature has put within their reach2 if they will hug and kiss and spoon and play with each other just as they want to do--if they will do this1 and not hurry about it--then1 in due course1 they will successfully execute the first act of the great play they are performing2 the sex organs will become fully ready for the union they are both longing for2 the prostate flow will have added to the erect condition of the penis2 the walls of the vagina and all the area of the vulva will be enlarged1 soft1 flexible and made smooth and slippery by a most generous supply of the pre-coital secretion and everything will be in perfect readiness for the next part of the performance1 namely the union of the organs4 ,and here it becomes necessary to say something about the position of the parties in making such union4 ,there are a large number of these possible1 some of which may be noted later1 but here1 only the most common one will be considered 7it is said there are more than forty different positions possible in this act74 ,the most common position is for the woman to lie flat on her back1 with her legs spread wide apart1 and her knees drawn up so that the angle made by the upper and lower part of the leg shall be less than a right angle4 ,her head should not be too high1 there should be no pillow under it4 ,into her arms1 and between her spread legs as she lies thus1 her lover should come4 ,his body will thus be over and above her1 and he should sustain himself on his elbows and knees1 so that little or none of his weight may rest upon her4 ,in this position1 face to face 7and it should be noted that only in the human family is this position of coitus possible6 ,among mere animals1 the male is always upon the back of the female4 ,they--mere animals--can never look each other in the eye and kiss each other during the act6 ,this is another marked and very significant difference between human beings and all other animals in this regard7 it is perfectly natural and easy for the organs to go together1 when properly made ready1 as here-before described4 ,the woman should also place her heels in the knee-hollows of her lover's legs1 and clasp his body with her arms4 ,the entrance of the penis into the vagina should not be too abrupt1 unless circumstances are perfectly favorable for such meeting and it is the wish of the wife that it be made in this way4 ,it is only fair to say1 though1 that such bold and pronounced entrance is often greatly desired by the woman1 if her passion has been fully aroused at this stage of the act4 ,such union is not infrequently of the greatest delight to her1 if everything is favorable for its being so made4 ,but1 if there is any pain produced in her by the coming together1 the meeting should be gentle and slow1 the penis working its way into the vagina by degrees1 till1 finally1 it is entirely encased therein4 ,once thus happily together1 the vagina and uterine cavity will still further expand1 till1 in due order1 the two organs will be fitted together perfectly1 a single unit1 one1 in the highest sense of unity4 ,this is the second act in this wonderful play4 ,once well together1 and the organs perfectly settled and adapted to each other1 the third act begins1 namely1 the motion of the organs--the sliding of the penis back and forth1 partly in and out of the vagina1 though this is not really the best way of describing just what should take place4 ,what should actually be done is1 that the two organs should engage in this motion1 which is common to them both4 ,they should mutually slip a few inches1 back and forth1 each party to the motion doing a fair half4 ,it is often supposed1 by both an uninitiated husband and an innocent wife1 that all the motion should originate with the husband--that he should slide his penis in and out of the vagina1 while the woman should lie still and let him do it all4 ,this is1 however1 a great mistake1 and one that has caused an endless amount of ill to untold numbers of husbands and wives4 ,and for the following reasons3 ,in the position just described1 if the wife has her arms around her lover's body and her heels in his knee-pockets1 while he supports himself by his elbows and knees over and above her1 resting none of his weight upon her1 it is perfectly easy for her to lift her hips up and down1 or sway them from side to side1 or swing them in a circling round-and-round motion1 as she may choose to do4 ,she can thus originate her half of the in-and-out motion--a something she will delight to do1 if given a fair chance4 ,if1 however1 the man lies heavily upon her1 holding her down with the weight of his body1 the possibility of such action on her part is prevented1 and this results disastrously to both parties4 ,and so1 in this part of the act1 the husband should take the utmost care to give his wife the full and complete freedom to move her hips as she chooses1 and as a successful climax demands that she should4 ,now if the wife be left free to move1 as just described1 and the in-and-out motion proceeds as it should1 what immediately follows will vary in a great degree4 ,thus1 the time taken to reach the climax1 or last act of the performance1 may be a few seconds1 or several minutes1 may require a mere half dozen motions1 or several hundred6 ,all depends on the intensity of the passions of the husband and wife1 especially the latter1 and their skill in manipulating this part of the act4 ,the effect of this motion is to still further excite and still more distend all the organs involved4 ,normally1 the motion grows faster and faster1 the strokes becoming as long as the length of the organs will possibly permit without separating them4 ,the flow of the lubricating fluids1 from both organs1 becomes more and more copious1 till1 all at once1 the orgasm1 or fourth stage1 is reached6 ,it is difficult to describe what this orgasm is like4 ,there is no bodily sensation that at all corresponds to it1 unless it be a sneeze1 and this is only like it in that it is spontaneous1 and a sort of nervous spasm 7a sneeze is sometimes spoken of as an orgasm74 ,a sexual orgasm is a nervous spasm1 or a series of pulsating nervous explosions which defy description4 ,the action is entirely beyond the control of the will1 when it finally arrives1 and the sensation it produces is delectable beyond telling4 ,it is the topmost pinnacle of all human experiences4 ,for a husband and wife to reach this climax1 at exactly the same instant1 is a consummation that can never be excelled in human life4 ,it is a goal worthy the endeavor of all husbands and wives1 to attain to this supreme height of sexual possibilities4 ,on the part of the man1 the orgasm throws the semen into1 and all about the vaginal-uterine tract4 ,the amount of semen thus discharged at a single climax is about a tablespoonful1 enough to entirely flush and flood the area into which it is thrown4 ,its use and action there have already been described1 and so need not be repeated here4 ,on the part of the woman1 the orgasm causes no corresponding emission of fluid1 of any sort1 that is jetted forth as is the semen4 ,yet the spasmodic action of the sexual parts1 so far as nervous explosions are concerned1 is exactly like that of her partner4 ,palpitation follows palpitation1 through all the sexual area2 the mouth of the womb opens and closes convulsively1 the vagina dilates and contracts again and again1 and the vulva undergoes similar actions4 ,the sensations are all of the most delectable nature1 the whole of the woman's body being thrilled1 over and over1 again and again1 with delights inexpressible4 ,this1 however1 seems to be the entire mission of the orgasm in woman4 ,it has nothing whatever to do with conception2 though many people1 especially young husbands who know just a little about the phenomenon1 believe that it is an essential to pregnancy4 ,but such is by no means the case4 ,all that is needed to bring about conception in a woman is the presence of the ovum in the uterus1 and its meeting semen there1 and so becoming fertilized4 ,so far as becoming pregnant is concerned1 the woman need have no pleasure at all in the act of coitus4 ,indeed1 women have been made pregnant by securing fresh semen from some man and injecting it into the vagina with an ordinary female syringe6 ,the false idea1 which largely prevails1 and which usually takes the form that there is no danger or possibility of conception unless the orgasm is simultaneous on the part of the man and woman1 has caused many a woman to become pregnant when she thought such a result to be impossible1 because she and her lover did not spend at the same instant4 ,for the same reason1 many a young husband has impregnated his wife when he least expected to do so1 thinking that because he alone experienced the orgasm1 that therefore conception was impossible4 ,again1 there are many married men and women who do not know that it is possible for a woman to experience an orgasm at all6 ,the writer once knew a case of this kind1 where a husband and wife1 most intelligent and well cultivated people1 lived together for twenty years1 and to whom were born six children1 who1 at the end of that time were wholly unaware of such possibility6 ,they afterwards discovered it by accident1 as it were1 and after that enjoyed its delights for many years4 ,there are some1 yea1 many1 women who never experience this sensation at all1 but of this more will be said later4 ,all these phenomena seem to indicate the fact that1 so far as women are concerned1 the orgasm is entirely for her delectation and delight4 ,it forms no part of the act of conception1 and its only possible function1 beyond that of pleasure1 is that1 because of the exceedingly delightful sensations it produces1 it may lure women to engage in coitus when1 but for this fact1 they would not do so1 and that it thus increases the possibility of women becoming mothers4 ,indeed1 there is no stronger temptation to a woman to run the risk of becoming pregnant than her desire to experience an orgasm6 ,but more of this later4 ,as soon as the orgasm is over1 a total collapse of the husband and wife takes place4 ,they are truly spent1 a most expressive word1 which alone can describe their condition4 ,on the part of the man the up-to-this-moment stout penis1 becomes almost instantly limp and shrunken1 while all the female organs become quiescent4 ,a most delightful languor steals over them2 every nerve and fibre of the whole body relaxes2 and a desire to fall asleep at once1 comes upon them irresistibly4 ,and the thing for them to do is to avail themselves of such natural impulse1 just as soon as possible4 ,they should always have at hand1 and within easy reach1 a towel1 or napkin1 with which to care for the surplus of the seminal emission1 which1 as soon as the organs are separated1 will1 in greater or less quantity1 flow from the vagina4 ,some of the same fluid will also remain upon the penis when it is withdrawn4 ,the husband should absorb this surplus which remains with him with the towel1 as soon as the organs are parted1 and immediately leave his super-imposed position1 leaving his wife perfectly free1 to do as she will4 ,she should arrange the towel between her thighs1 exactly as she would a sanitary napkin1 making no attempt to remove the surplus semen at that time1 and turn over and go to sleep immediately4 7,it is said that if the woman goes to sleep on her back1 after coition1 she thereby increases the probability1 of becoming pregnant4 ,this is a point that women who greatly desire motherhood should note4 ,the writer knew one case where a wife lay on her back for twenty-four hours after coition and so became pregnant after all other means had failed47 ,now it might seem that such neglect1 on the part of the woman1 to immediately remove the surplus semen1 was uncleanly and unsanitary4 ,but this is not at all true1 and for this reason3 ,the semen is a most powerful stimulant to all the female sex-organs1 and to the whole body of the woman4 ,the organs themselves will absorb quantities of semen1 if left in contact with it1 and it is most healthful and beneficial to them1 and to the woman1 to have them do so4 ,it is for this cause that many women increase in flesh1 and even grow fat after they are married and so can avail themselves of this healthful food4 ,as a matter of fact1 there is no nerve-stimulant1 or nerve-quieter1 that is as potent to woman-kind as semen4 ,there are multitudes of nervous women1 hysterical even1 who are restored to health1 and kept in good health1 through the stimulative effects of satisfactory coitus and the absorption of semen1 when both these items are present in perfection4 ,on the other hand1 there are many women who suffer all sorts of ills1 when these normally beneficial factors are misused or wrongly applied4 ,the results that follow all depend upon the way the act is done1 and its products utilized4 ,so1 after the act of coition is over1 let the woman slip a bandage into place as soon as possible1 and go to sleep4 ,if she sleeps long1 so much the better1 so much more will she be benefited by the presence of the semen and its absorption4 ,when she naturally wakens1 she may bathe the vulva region with warm water2 but there is no need of1 nor is it wise to try to cleanse the vagina and the uterine tract by the use of a vaginal syringe4 ,above all1 never inject cold water into the vagina1 especially do not do this immediately after coitus4 ,some women use a cold water injection immediately after coitus4 ,there is no surer way to ill health and ultimate suicide4 ,the parts are congested with blood at such times1 and to pour cold water upon them is as though1 when one is dripping with perspiration1 he should plunge into a cold bath4 ,nature has made wise provision for taking care of all the semen that remains in the vagina4 ,let the parts alone1 and they will cleanse and care for themselves4 ,such1 then1 is a somewhat extended review of the act of coitus at its best estate1 and in a general way4 ,its perfect accomplishment is an art to be cultivated1 and one in which expertness can only be attained by wise observation1 careful study of all the factors involved1 and a loving adaptation of the bodies1 minds and souls of both the parties to the act4 ,it is no mere animal function4 ,it is a union1 a unity of two souls with but a single thought1 two hearts that beat as one4 ,there is nothing low or degrading about it1 when it is what it ought to be1 when it is brought to1 and experienced at1 its highest and best estate4 ,it is ,god-designed1 ,god-born1 ,god-bestowed6 ,as such it should be thankfully received and divinely used by all the sons and daughters of men4 ,,vii ,,the ,,first ,,union ,and now1 although so much has been said1 there is much that remains to be said1 and which ought to be said1 to do the subject justice4 ,some of these things are as follows3 ,something more ought to be told about the second part of the act of coitus1 the union of the organs1 when this occurs for the first time on the part of the woman4 ,at the first meeting of the husband and wife1 if the woman be a virgin1 there are certain conditions which exist1 on her part1 that are not present in after-meetings1 and these must be understood and rightly dealt with1 or the worst of bad results may ensue4 ,of course1 at such first meeting1 all the preliminaries prescribed as forming the first movement of the act should be carried out to the limit4 ,it is not too much to say that these should be prolonged for some days6 ,do not start1 young husband1 at this statement6 ,well did ,alexander ,dumas1 pre1 write3 ,oh1 young husband1 have a care in the first overtures you make toward your bride6 ,she may shrink from what she feels must come2 she may put her hands over her eyes to shut out the sight2 but do not forget that she is a woman1 and so is filled with curiosity1 under any and all circumstances6 ,and you may set it down as sure1 that1 though she blinds herself with her hands as she scales the dizzy heights you are leading her over1 nevertheless1 she will peek through her fingers6 ,so she will watch you with most critical eyes1 and note every show of selfishness or blundering on your part6 ,so have a care6 ,you may think you are aiming your arrow at the sun4 ,see to it that it does not alight in the mud6 ,good words these1 and to be heeded1 come what may6 ,as a rule1 if the bride be a virgin1 it is well to let plenty of time elapse before engaging in the full act of coitus6 ,delay here will lead to a possible loving speed1 later on4 ,the young people should take time enough to get better acquainted with each other than ever before2 to become1 in a measure1 accustomed to the uncovered presence of each other1 and to the new possibilities of courting and playing together that their new conditions offer4 ,in any case1 full coitus should not be attempted till the bride is at least willing4 ,if she can be brought to become anxious for the meeting1 so much the better4 ,and so1 with plenty of time taken for making ready for the act1 we come to the first union of the organs for a newly married couple1 the bride being a virgin4 ,and here is where an explanation is called for4 ,the vulva1 or external part of the female sex organs1 is a mouth shaped aperture1 located laterally between the forward part of the thighs4 ,in shape1 size and structure1 it much resembles the external parts of the mouth proper4 ,it begins just in front of the anus1 and extends forward above the pubic bone and a little ways up the belly4 ,its entire lateral length is about four or more inches4 ,this organ is made up of several parts1 as follows3 ,the lips1 or labiae1 as they are technically known1 the clitoris1 and the vaginal opening4 ,the lips are a double row1 two on either side1 and are known as labiae major and labiae minor1 that is1 the thicker and thinner1 or larger and smaller lips4 ,they extend almost the entire length of the vulva1 the outer lips folding over the inner ones when the thighs are together4 ,the outer parts of the larger lips are covered with hair4 ,in thickness and quality these labiae are much like the lips of the face of each individual1 a large mouth and thick lips indicate a large vulva and thick labiae and vice-versa4 ,the clitoris is a gland that is located forward1 on the upper part of the vulva4 ,it corresponds1 almost exactly1 in make-up and function1 with the glans penis of the male organ4 ,the vaginal opening is at the rear1 or lower part of the vulva1 and leads directly into the vagina proper4 ,all these parts are composed of most keenly responsive nerves1 and they are covered with a thin1 delicate and exceedingly sensitive skin1 almost exactly such as lines the cheeks and the mouth4 ,both the clitoris and the lips are filled with expandable blood vessels1 and in a state of tumescence they are greatly enlarged by a flow of blood into the parts4 ,the clitoris1 in this condition1 undergoes an enlargement1 or erection1 which is exactly like that of the glans penis4 ,so much as to the physiology of this part of the female sex organs1 all of which should be well understood by every bride and bridegroom1 though often it is not4 ,now1 in its virgin state1 the vulva has another part1 not yet named1 and this is the hymen1 or maiden-head as it is commonly known4 ,this is a membrane that grows across the forward1 or upper part of the vaginal opening1 and so closes up nearly all that part of the vulva4 ,this hymen is not always present1 however1 even in a state of undoubted virginity4 ,sometimes it is torn away in childhood by the little girl's fingers1 as she plays with herself4 ,sometimes it is ruptured by lifting1 again it is broken away by the use of a large-sized female syringe4 ,for all these reasons1 it is not right to conclude that a bride is not a virgin because the hymen is not present and in evidence at the first coition4 ,now many young husbands1 and some young wives1 are wholly ignorant of the existence of the hymen1 and of the troubles it may cause at the second part of the sexual act1 in a first meeting4 ,this membrane is often quite tough and strong4 ,it is grown fast to the lower part of the clitoris and to the inside surfaces of the smaller lips1 and it covers so much of the vaginal opening that it is practically impossible for the erect penis to enter the vagina so long as it is present4 ,now if1 under these conditions1 the bride and groom 7especially the latter7 are ignorant of the real construction of the parts1 and so should try to make a union of the organs1 they would find such union obstructed1 if not impossible2 and if the man1 puzzled1 and impatient1 and passion-driven1 should force a hasty entrance into the vagina1 rupturing the hymen ruthlessly1 he would hurt the woman cruelly1 probably cause her to bleed freely from the wounded parts1 and shock her seriously6 ,all of which would be a score against the husband1 would brand him as a brute1 or a bungler1 and so tend to make his sun-aimed arrow alight in the mud4 ,the thing to do here1 is1 first of all1 to know the situation and to talk it over1 and carefully1 delicately1 do the best that can be done about it4 ,if the conditions are fully understood by the bride and groom1 they can1 in almost every case1 by working and moving together carefully1 overcome the obstacle1 remove the hymen with little or no pain or loss of blood4 ,as a matter of fact1 when the time for meeting comes1 if all the facts are known1 and the husband will hold his erect penis still and steady against the hymen1 the bride will so press against it1 and wiggle around it1 that by her own motions1 she will break the membrane and so be rid of it4 ,she knows how much pain she can endure1 and when the pressure is too hard she can relieve it by her own action6 ,anyhow1 what is done she does herself1 and so can never charge up against her husband6 ,it is a rare case in which1 by mutual willingness1 and desire and mutual effort to remove the obstruction1 it cannot be eliminated with satisfaction to both bride and groom4 ,if1 however1 careful and well-executed efforts fail to remove it1 the services of a surgeon should be procured1 and he1 by a very simple and almost painless operation1 can remove the difficulty4 ,but never1 no never1 should it be brutally torn away by the force of the husband1 and without the full willingness of the wife4 ,mark this well4 ,as a matter of fact1 the wise and practical thing for every bride to do1 would be to go to a surgeon a few days before her wedding1 and have him remove the hymen for her4 ,such operation is nearly painless1 and is very easily done4 ,still1 to do this might raise a doubt of virginity on the part of the husband and so this is a point to be careful about6 ,the act of removing the hymen is often spoken of as defloration--the tearing to pieces of a flower4 ,the term is not fortunate4 ,nothing worth while has been taken away by removing the hymen1 but much that is useful has been acquired4 ,an organ that has outlived whatever usefulness it might once have had has been removed1 and its going has made possible new and beautiful uses in life4 ,if this has been accomplished by the mutual desire and effort of the bride and groom1 it is a cause for joy and not of sorrow2 of delight and not of mourning4 ,as well weep over the removal of the vermiform appendix as for the destruction of the hymen4 ,with this obstacle rightly overcome1 the second act of coitus offers no situation that calls for further remark or explanation4 ,and now a few words about the probabilities of conception resulting from coitus1 and some matters which are very closely related thereto4 ,in the first place1 every healthy and fairly-well-provided-for husband and wife should desire to have children1 and should act in accordance with such wish4 ,this is not only in harmony with the primary purpose of sex in the human family1 but it is a response to a natural demand of the human soul1 in both man and woman4 ,as ,bernard ,shaw makes ,jack ,tanner say3 ,there is a father-heart as well as a mother-heart and parenthood is the supreme desire of all normal and wholesome-minded men and women4 ,it is not an instinct1 but something far above that quality4 ,parenthood among mere animals is the result of instinct1 and of that alone1 but not so in the human race4 ,human beings naturally desire to make a home for themselves1 and a home1 in the fullest meaning of that word1 means children and a family circle4 ,this is something that animals know nothing about4 ,animal mothers forget and ignore their progeny as soon as they are weaned2 and animal fathers will1 in many cases1 kill them as soon as they are born1 if they get a chance to do so4 ,these facts prove that parenthood1 in the human family1 is something much more than in the rest of the animal kingdom4 ,indeed1 the whole matter of comparing this quality1 as it exists in humanity1 with that of animals merely1 is only a continuance of the similar abomination of comparing the sex functions of these two forms of life4 ,in the real essentials of existence1 they are in no way comparable2 and to make such is not only folly1 but approaches the positively criminal4 ,the results of doing so certainly lead to crime4 ,fundamentally1 then1 nearly all men and women marry with the purpose and hope of having a family of children4 ,they may not put it that way1 may not even acknowledge it1 even to each other or to themselves2 but if married people find that they cannot produce1 it is a source of unspeakable regret to them both4 ,in such cases1 the inherent desire for parenthood will cry aloud and spare not4 ,a barren woman greatly mourns her inability1 and will shed bitter tears over the fact1 if she be truly human2 and an impotent man will be practically despised by all who are aware of his incompetence4 ,and yet1 though all normal men and women desire to have children1 it is only right that they should desire to have them as they want them1 and when they want them1 and not whenever they may happen to come6 ,that is1 sensible and thoughtful people1 who plan definitely for the future1 want to make the coming of children to them an affair of deliberate arrangement1 and not of chance4 ,this is not only as it should be1 but is really the only right way that children should be begotten and born4 ,which statement calls for a few special words on the right of parents to regulate the production of progeny4 ,there is much talk1 in some quarters1 about race suicide1 and the wickedness of deliberately limiting the number of children in a family4 ,such talking and writing arouse anxious questionings in the minds of conscientious young married men and women who are desiring to do the right thing in the premises1 but are uncertain as to what the right thing is1 and for such are the following words3 ,many years ago1 an ,english philosopher and statesman1 ,malthus by name1 discovered and announced the fact that the rate of natural increase in the human race was several times greater than that of the possible rate of production of food supply for their support4 ,scientifically phrased1 his statement was that the rate of increase in humanity is in geometrical ratio1 while the rate of increase of possible food supply is in arithmetical ratio4 ,and from this basis1 he reasoned that1 unless the surplus of human production was in some way cut off and destroyed1 the whole human race would ultimately demand more food supply than could possibly be produced2 and so1 in due course of time1 the whole race would perish from starvation6 ,then he proceeded to reason that the purpose of disease1 plague1 pestilence1 famine1 poverty and warfare was to cut off and destroy the surplus of humanity1 and hence all these alleged evils were in reality blessings in disguise1 and that it would be wrong to interfere with their really beneficent workings6 ,volumes could be written1 and they could not tell the half of the misery and evil that the promulgation of this doctrine has done for the civilized world1 but there is no space here for giving any such details2 nor need this be done1 though the statement of the doctrine had to be made to make ready for what is to follow4 ,now1 is it not far more reasonable to suppose that1 since the possibility of determining the number of off-spring a husband and wife may produce has been given them2 that since such result can be1 for them1 made a matter of choice1 of an exercise of the will1 and not of blind instinct--under these circumstances1 all of which undoubtedly exist1 is it not far more reasonable to believe that it is the purpose of the ,creator that the limiting of the number of human beings in the world should be brought about by curbing the birth rate1 rather than by killing the surplus after they are born6 ,there can be but one answer made to this question1 by any intelligent man or woman4 ,these facts1 then1 establish the rightfulness of determining the number and size of a family by every husband and wife4 ,but this does not mean that they are to entirely refrain from cohabiting1 in order to keep from having children6 ,this phase of the argument has already been gone over and disposed of4 ,but it does mean that husbands and wives have a right to use such rightful means for the limiting of the number of offspring as are conducive to the interests of all parties concerned--themselves1 their circumstances1 the born or unborn children1 the state1 the nation4 ,let the bride and groom be well convinced and established in their own minds on these points1 as early in their relation as possible4 ,they should be so from the very outset--must be so1 to reach the best results4 ,the issue then presents itself3 ,how can such deliberate and wilful determination of the number of children a husband and wife may have1 be brought about8 ,and the answer is1 that it can never be accomplished by careless and hap-hazard cohabiting6 ,on the contrary1 it can only be compassed by the most careful and watchful processes of engaging in coitus1 and by a full knowledge of physiological facts1 and by acting1 always1 in accordance with the same4 ,it is no road for careless travel1 but it is a way worth going in1 for all that4 ,on this point1 let it be said that all sane and intelligent men and women agree that anything even approaching infanticide is nothing short of a crime1 and that abortion1 except for the purpose of saving the life of the mother1 is practically murder4 ,but1 while this is all true1 to prevent the contact of two germs which1 if permitted to unite1 would be liable to result in a living human form1 is quite another affair4 ,it is only this aspect of the situation which will be considered in what follows4 ,now1 as has already been shown1 the essentials for conception consist of having the ovum present in the womb1 and its meeting the semen there4 ,the corollary of this is1 that whenever these coincidences take place1 there is a possibility for conception4 ,but in all normal cases1 the ovum only passes into the womb once in every twenty-eight days2 and1 as a rule1 it only remains in the womb for about half that period of time1 that is1 for about #ad or #ae days in each month4 ,and so1 since the menstrual flow ceases after about five days from its beginning1 in about ten days after its stopping1 the ovum will have passed out of the womb1 and hence that organ contains nothing that is impregnable4 ,under these conditions1 semen may be deposited in the womb1 without danger of impregnation4 ,this is a simple proposition1 and easy to understand if once known4 ,however1 it must be said that these generally common conditions do not always obtain--that is1 they are not true in the case of all women4 ,there are women who will conceive at any time in the month1 if they are given a chance to do so4 ,the physiological reason for such possibility is said to be this3 ,there are always ova in the ovaries1 in varying stages of development4 ,ordinarily1 only once a month do any of these pass down into the womb2 but1 in exceptional cases1 sometimes these ova are so partially held in the ovaries that1 under the excitement of coitus1 and because all these parts dilate so much during the act1 an ovum may slip its moorings1 under such conditions1 pass down into the uterus at an untimely season1 meet the semen there1 and pregnancy result4 ,such are the facts in some cases4 ,how1 then1 can a husband and wife tell how it is1 or will be1 in their particular case8 ,the answer is that they can only tell by trying1 and that should be done as follows3 ,the first sexual meeting of the bride and groom should never take place until at least ten days after the ceasing of the menstrual flow in the bride6 ,this is a rule that should never be violated if the parties wish to test out the real condition as to whether or not the bride has any free time4 ,the chances are several to one that she has such leeway2 but the fact can only be established by proving up and this can never be done if any chances are taken4 ,put this down as rule number one4 ,for this reason1 it is well for the bride to fix the wedding day2 and1 if possible1 for her to locate it sometime during the probably immune period4 ,and the nearer she can bring this day to the beginning of such period of freedom from danger of pregnancy1 the better4 ,for1 if it should happen that the first coitus should take place only a day or two before the time when another monthly was due1 such excitement might hasten the passage of the nearly-ripe ovum into the uterus1 and conception might occur4 ,in which case1 all the fat would be in the fire1 nothing would be proved1 and the parties would be as ignorant as ever regarding the facts in their case4 ,and so1 the first sexual meeting of a bride and bridegroom should be not earlier than ten days after the ceasing of the menstrual flow and not later than three days before the next monthly is due4 ,put that down as rule number two1 never to be violated4 ,and if marriage takes place before this period of probable immunity on the part of the bride arrives1 the only safe thing to do is to patiently wait till such time arrives4 ,this may require fortitude on the part of both parties1 but it is the only safe thing to do4 ,and to do just that1 will amply repay such waiting4 ,the writer knows of a case where the wedding took place just three days before the bride's next monthly was due1 and she and her husband waited for more than two weeks before they met sexually6 ,but it paid to wait1 for their doing so proved that the bride had two weeks of free time in each month1 and this was worth all it cost to find out6 ,take time6 ,and now let it be added that it is a great accomplishment for a husband and wife to be free from a fear of pregnancy as a result of coitus4 ,this is a thousand times truer for the woman than for the man1 for it is she who has to bear the burden of what follows1 if following there be4 ,the husband can do the deed and go about his business4 ,the wife1 if the fertile seed takes root1 has before her months of care and anxiety1 and she risks her very life in what may come of it all4 ,for these reasons1 she has a right to dictate all the terms which are liable to cause her to become a mother4 ,and yet she should do this with full regard for the husband1 in love1 in true wifely-womanhood4 ,on this point1 do not fail to read ,the ,helpmate1 by ,may ,sinclair4 ,it is a story that no bride and bridegroom should fail to read and study1 carefully4 ,the whole subject of how to engage in satisfactory coitus and avoid pregnancy may be summed up as follows3--,the attainment of such a condition is well worth the most careful1 earnest and honestly pains-taking endeavor4 ,for1 if such status be not reached1 its lack will be a source of endless contentions and differences between the husband and wife4 ,it will lead to jealousies1 quarrels1 and all sorts of marital woes4 ,but1 the situation once mastered1 by the most loving and accurate of scientific methods of procedure1 a happy married life is certain to result4 ,otherwise1 the married state will always be in a condition of unstable equilibrium4 ,so let every bride and bridegroom begin1 from the first1 to try to establish the greatly to be desired accomplishment4 ,if anything further on this point should be desired1 consult a reliable physician4 ,,viii ,,the ,,art ,,of ,,love ,and still there is more to be said6 ,is it not written that ,art is long6 ,and the ,art of ,love is the longest of all arts1 and the most difficult of all for its complete mastery and attainment6 ,it is a matter of misfortune1 and yet one of not infrequent occurrence1 that the sex organs of husband and wife are not well matched2 and that trouble1 sometimes of a most serious nature1 results4 ,when this condition is found to exist1 it should be treated sanely and wisely1 and the chances are many to one that the difficulty can be overcome1 to the full satisfaction of both parties concerned4 ,in such cases1 the mis-matching usually arises from the fact that the penis of the husband is too long for the vagina of the wife4 ,this is very apt to be the case where the wife is of the dumpy sort1 with a small mouth and short fingers1 while the husband is gangling1 large mouthed and long fingered4 ,these are facts that ought to be taken into account before marriage1 and which should figure in determining whether the parties are suited to each other4 ,they would be regarded in this way1 too1 if they were generally known1 as they most surely are not4 ,here is another place where ignorance and innocence get in their work1 and make trouble in married life6 ,in such a case as this1 the too-long penis1 when fully inserted in the too-short vagina1 and especially when1 at the orgasm1 the two organs are crowded together vigorously1 as the impulse of both parties demands they should be at this part of the act1 the end of the penis is driven against the rear walls of the vagina1 often furiously1 thus stretching and straining the vaginal passage longitudinally1 pressing against the womb unnaturally1 and not infrequently pushing it out of place and sometimes rupturing the uterine tract seriously1 hence causing all sorts of unfortunate and greatly-to-be-regretted results4 ,because of such danger1 the first meeting of the husband and wife should be accomplished with the utmost care1 especially in the second part of the act1 the first putting together of the organs4 ,this is the only way of determining1 in each case1 how the organs will fit1 and happy are the parties thereto if such fit is found to be perfect6 ,but if it should turn out that there is a mismatching1 of the nature just described1 the conditions can be adjusted if the right means are used4 7,before telling this1 however1 it should be stated that the relative size of the sex organs can never be fully judged of by the size of the body of a man or a woman4 ,many a small man has an abnormally large and long penis1 and many a little woman has a large vulva and a long vagina2 and the reverse of all this is true1 in the case of many men and women4 ,these items in the count are among the things that can never be known with certainty except by actual trial1 and this is not possible1 as things are now47 ,and so1 if mis-matching is found to exist1 in any given case1 it can be provided for1 in most cases as follows3 ,instead of taking the position for coitus which has already been described--the woman on her back and the man over and above her--let this be done3 ,let the man lie on his left side1 or partly on his left side and partly on his back1 facing the woman1 his left leg drawn up so that the thigh makes an angle of #de degrees with the body1 and the knee bent at about the same angle4 ,now let her1 lying on her right side1 mount into his arms1 in this way3 ,let her place her right hip in the angle made by her husband's left thigh and his body1 so that his left leg supports her hips1 by being under them2 put her right leg between his legs1 throw her left leg over his right leg1 put her right arm around his neck1 and her left arm should be placed across his body under his right arm4 ,his left arm should be placed around her waist from below1 and his right arm left free to move over her body1 as he may choose4 ,now in this position1 the man's hips make a sort of saddle into which the woman vaults easily1 naturally1 and with the greatest of comfort2 while the man1 with his whole body supported by the bed1 as he lies1 will be perfectly comfortable1 and can maintain the position much longer1 without tiring1 than he could were he over and above the woman1 supporting himself by his elbows and knees1 and with the woman's arms around his waist1 lifting her body thereby1 and thus adding her weight to his1 all to be sustained by him4 ,a moment's consideration will disclose the fact that this position has many points in its favor1 beyond that of the man-superior form4 ,the woman1 in this position1 is not wholly superior1 but she is partly on her right side and partly on her belly4 ,her whole weight rests on her husband's body1 but her weight does not tire him1 as the bed below him easily supports them both4 ,now1 in this position1 the sex organs are brought closely together and their union is easily accomplished4 ,but see6 ,it is now the woman1 and not the man who has full control of such meeting1 and so can regulate it to her liking1 or needs4 ,her hips are perfectly free to move towards1 or from1 those of the man2 and so she can determine just how much or how little of his penis shall enter her vagina6 ,and if his penis is too long for her1 she can accommodate her action to such fact6 ,as for the man1 his satisfaction will be fully equal to1 if not greater than it would be were he in the other position4 ,the ease afforded to his body1 and the fact that he need have no fear of hurting the woman1 these things will be a delight to him1 that is of real value1 and which will make for his delectation as much as for that of the woman in his arms4 ,the in-and-out motion is as easily performed in this position as in the other2 and at the climax1 the organs can be crowded together passionately1 and still without hurting the woman4 ,for she1 being free to move1 can so curve her hips that the pelvic bone1 the mons veneris1 as it is technically called1 will receive the most of the pressure1 and at the same time the angle which is thus made by the relative positions of the vagina and the penis will keep the latter from penetrating the vagina too far1 and so will protect its rear walls and the womb from all danger of harm4 ,the orgasm is just as perfect in this position as in the other4 ,it is just as natural as the other position1 and has only to be tried to be proved worthy4 ,and now one other point4 7,curious how these details protract themselves4 ,but there is no help for it4 ,we must continue1 now that we have begun47 ,a very frequent cause of married unsatisfaction is the fact of the difference of time that it takes for the husband and wife to come to the climax1 the orgasm4 ,as has already been noted1 the highest delight in the act comes when this climax is simultaneous1 comes at exactly the same instant to both parties4 ,but to bring this about is not easy in all cases1 and hence what follows3 ,as a rule1 women are slower in reaching the orgasm than are men4 ,this is not always so1 but it is generally the case4 ,some wives are so passionate that they will spend several times to their husbands' once6 ,the author knows of a case where the wife will regularly experience the orgasm four or five times to her husband's once4 ,she is a lovely wife and a highly accomplished woman1 in no sense fleshy or worldly minded4 ,the situation is that her sex organs are exceedingly sensitive while those of her husband are the reverse1 they are timed differently1 that is all4 ,the case is rare1 and as a rule1 women are timed slower than men4 ,again1 after a man has passed the orgasm it is1 in most cases1 impossible for him to continue the act1 right then and there1 and bring the woman to the climax1 if she has not yet arrived1 from the fact that1 with the expulsion of the semen1 usually detumescence of the penis at once takes place1 and the organ is incapable of exciting the woman when in this condition4 ,and so1 if the husband goes off first1 there is no possibility of the wife's reaching the climax at that embrace4 ,this leaves her unsatisfied1 all her sex organs congested1 and the whole situation is unsatisfactory1 in the extreme4 ,on the other hand1 if the wife comes to the orgasm first1 her vulva and vagina detumesce but little and that very slowly1 so that it is perfectly possible for the husband to continue his action1 and come to the climax1 even if his partner has already spent4 ,under these conditions it is easy to see that1 where the wife is keyed or timed much slower than her husband1 as is quite often the case1 coitus is very liable to be a very one-sided affair1 one in which the husband gets all the satisfaction1 and the wife little or ,,none--a most unfortunate status for both parties1 but especially for the wife4 ,the writer once knew a case where a husband and wife lived together to celebrate their golden wedding1 and the wife never once experienced an orgasm1 though the husband cohabited with her several times a month1 during the most of their married life4 ,there was no good reason why this should have been so1 only that the husband was quick in action and the wife somewhat slow1 and they had never synchronated their time differences4 ,the dear old lady died at ninety1 never having known a joy that1 since her bridal night1 she had wished for4 ,both the husband and wife were most excellent people4 ,they simply didn't know6 ,one was ignorant and the other innocent1 and there you are again6 ,now the thing to do1 under such circumstances1 is for the parties to get together4 ,and the way to do this is1 first1 to prolong the ,,first part of the act1 till the wife has not only caught up with1 but is even ahead of her husband in the state of her passion4 ,to bring about this condition1 the husband should use every means to stimulate his wife's sex-nature and increase her desire for coition4 ,here are some things he can do1 which will tend to produce such results3 ,a woman's breasts are directly connected with all her reproductive nerves4 ,this is especially true of her nipples4 ,to touch them is to directly excite all of her sex organs4 ,the lips and tongue are also thus nervously connected with these vital parts1 and1 so1 if the husband will play with his wife's breasts1 especially with her nipples1 manipulating them with his fingers1 or1 better still1 with his lips and tongue--at the same time1 if he will stroke her vulva with his fingers1 especially the clitoris1 and if she will encourage him to do this1 by holding her breast with one hand1 shaking it about as her nipple is in her lover's lips2 if1 lying flat on her back1 her husband at her right side1 and with his left arm around her waist1 she will spread her legs wide apart1 thus opening the vulva to its utmost1 and sway her hips1 raising and lowering them betimes2 and1 since she has a free hand1 if1 with this1 she will take her husband's penis with it and play with it as her lover plays with her vulva--if they will do this1 the cases are rare in which passion will not grow in the wife to almost any desirable extent4 ,under such courting1 the parts will all enlarge1 the pre-coital secretion will flow in abundance2 and1 in due course1 all will be ready for the second part of the act4 ,this part of coitus is1 really1 one of the most enjoyable of the entire performance4 ,if1 perchance1 the pre-coital secretion should be tardy in appearing on the part of the wife1 so that the vulva is dry as the husband strokes it1 let him moisten the part with saliva from his mouth4 ,to do this1 let him moisten his fingers from his mouth1 and transfer this to the vulva1 and then proceed with his stroking4 ,this moistening the vulva with saliva may be repeated several times1 if necessary1 always until the flow of pre-coital fluid from the parts themselves renders any further moistening needless4 ,the stroking of the dry vulva will do little toward the arousing of passion1 or producing the pre-coital flow4 ,but if the parts be moistened1 as above directed1 both these desired results will follow1 except in very rare cases4 ,and let no one make the mistake of thinking that thus moistening the vulva with saliva is unseemly1 or unsanitary4 ,it is neither4 ,on the contrary1 it is nature's way of helping to perfection an act which1 but for such timely assistance1 might never be brought to a successful issue4 ,as has already been noted1 chemically1 saliva and the pre-coital fluid are almost identical4 ,they are both a natural secretion of a mucous membrane1 are alkaline in reaction1 their native purpose is lubrication1 and1 as a matter of fact1 the saliva is as natural an application to the lips of the vulva as it is to the interior of the mouth or throat4 ,truth to tell1 the practice of applying saliva to the genitals before coition is very general1 so much so that it might almost be counted as instinctive4 ,it is mentioned here only to remove any prejudice that might linger in the sophisticated mind of the reader4 ,such use of saliva is no more to be deprecated than its application in a hundred other ways1 such as moistening the fingers to turn a leaf1 of licking one's fingers after eating candy4 ,such use of this fluid from the mouth might be condemned by the over-nice1 but it is quite universally practiced1 and it is neither unwholesome nor unsanitary4 ,it is sometimes recommended that some form of oil1 as sweet oil or vaseline1 be used as an unguent for anointing the parts before engaging in coitus1 but this practice cannot be recommended4 ,oil is not a natural product of the parts to which it is applied1 it is chemically unlike their secretions1 and to smear the delicate organs with a fluid that is foreign to their nature1 is unwise1 unsanitary1 not to say filthy4 ,it is like greasing the mouth to make food slip down easily4 ,and it is easy to understand how such application of an unguent to the mouth would impair the taste1 dull the nerves of sensation1 and greatly interfere with the native and wholesome uses of the oral cavity4 ,so don't be afraid or ashamed to use saliva in preparing the vulva and the vagina for the reception of their natural mate4 ,and so1 to return to where we left off1 if the wife is slower timed than her husband1 her passion can be greatly increased by the manipulation just described4 ,indeed1 it could be very easily carried to such length--the lips and tongue playing with the nipple1 and the finger-stroking of the vulva--that the woman could be brought to an orgasm without the union of the organs at all6 ,this is a form of masturbation 7this word has a bad meaning attached to it1 but it is a good word1 as will shortly be shown1 and it has its legitimate uses2 but1 as a preparation for coition1 it should not be carried any further than is essential for bringing the laggard passion of the woman up to an equal tension of that of her lover47 ,a few weeks'1 or months'1 practice will enable a wife to determine just how much of this form of courting will bring her to the desired point of excitement2 and1 when this point is reached1 she should invite her husband to come up over1 if the first position is to be adopted for the rest of the act2 or1 she should throw herself into her lover's arms1 if the second position is used4 ,just a little more--,if1 after getting into one position or the other1 it seems to the wife that she is not yet fairly abreast of her husband in the intensity of her passion1 let her still further seek to advance it1 as follows3 ,if the position with the husband superior is taken1 let him1 after he has gotten into place and before the organs are united1 have his wife take his penis in her hand1 and1 as he moves his hips up and down1 stroke her vulva1 especially the clitoris1 with the glans penis--not entering the vagina at once1 but continuing this form of exterior contact of the organs1 for a longer or shorter time--slipping past the wide open vaginal mouth1 even when the wife raises her thighs and1 as it were1 begs for an entrance2 tantalizing her to the point of distraction--till1 finally1 she will take no for an answer no longer1 but will1 in an ecstacy1 slip the penis into the vagina1 and thus consummate their union4 ,if she be far enough abandoned with her passion1 such entrance may be made at a single stroke1 not to say a furious plunge4 ,but if the vulva and vagina are not yet fully dilated1 the entrance should be carefully made1 gently made1 as she can bear it1 as she wishes it to be4 ,sometimes1 yes1 not infrequently1 in this position1 the external stroking of the organs may be continued to the very verge of the orgasm1 so that1 especially if the entrance can be made1 as it were1 in a frenzy of passionate delight1 the organs coming into full length union at a single impulse1 or rushing together--then the simultaneous climax may be reached with one or two in-and-out motions--or1 perhaps the single master-plunge may win the goal instanter6 ,if so1 a consummation devoutly to be wished has been successfully reached6 ,again1 if the wife is slow1 and the man is quick1 in this play for getting together1 it will enable the man to greatly extend and protract what might be called the time of his possible retention1 if he can keep the foreskin over the glans penis4 ,some men cannot do this4 ,if they have been circumcised1 of course they cannot6 ,but if the glans penis can be covered with the foreskin during all this playing together1 it will enable the husband to prolong his retentional time far beyond what he otherwise could4 ,some men have the power of retaining to almost any length of time by the exercise of their will power1 and so they can wait for their wives4 ,if the wife is slower timed than the husband1 he should carefully cultivate the art of retaining and so wait for her4 ,to do this successfully will greatly increase married happiness4 ,this same remark 7keeping the gland covered7 applies with equal force to the possibilities of the man's retention after the organs are united1 and all through the third part of the act4 ,if the penis can enter the vagina with its natural cap on1 the husband can give his wife the pleasure of many times the amount of in-and-out motion than he could otherwise bestow upon her4 ,and if the wife is the slower of the two 7as is generally the case7 she will greatly appreciate such a favor1 and will repay it a ,,thousand ,,fold by the responsive1 reciprocal motions which she will ,,lavish upon her considerate lover4 ,this is an item of almost supreme importance--this keeping the cap on the penis1 during the act1 if the wife is slower than the husband--if they need to have a care1 to insure their getting off together4 ,and here is a curious fact1 which would seem to show that ,mother ,nature has especially provided a blissful reward for both the husband and wife who will be careful on this point4 ,thus1 if the husband will be careful to have the glans penis covered with the foreskin 7and1 of course1 this can never be1 if the organs are united when the vulva and vagina are dry7 when it enters the vagina1 and will so engage in the in-and-out motion that it will stay covered as the third act progresses--if this is done1 when the climax comes1 if the two spend together1 the womb will open its mouth as it were1 clasp the foreskin1 slip it back over the gland so that1 when the supreme instant comes1 the naked gland will be in the most direct and blissful contact with the most sensitive part of the uterus6 ,this is a most wonderful provision of nature1 and to utilize it1 and enjoy it to its utmost1 is the maximum of human delight6 ,again1 if after the organs are well together1 in the man-superior position1 and the in-and-out motion has begun1 it should be found that the wife is still behind in the game1 she can gain greatly in catching up if she is permitted to originate the larger part of the motion4 ,to enable her to do this1 let her husband hold his body quite well above her1 so that she can have plenty of freedom to move her hips as she may choose to4 ,added to this1 if the husband will1 in large measure1 hold still1 and keep his penis in such position that it presses against the upper part of the vulva1 that is against the clitoris1 7as the phrase goes1 if he will ride high7 and then permit his wife to make long strokes1 sliding the organs together for their full possible length1 with the clitoris in constant contact with the penis1 during the whole of each stroke--all of this will greatly and rapidly increase her passions and bring her to the climax4 ,or1 as a variation from this1 if the organs can be united to their fullest possible limit1 so that the base of the penis presses firmly against the ,mons ,veneris1 and the clitoris and labiae almost clasp their mate2 and then1 in this position1 if the husband will maintain the status quo1 while she lifts her hips hard against his1 and swings them about1 in a sort of circular motion round and round1 as it were--this will also greatly increase her passion1 and soon bring her to the climax4 ,in both these last described ways of courting1 the husband should be extra careful not to permit the weight of his body to press down heavily upon his wife4 ,he should wholly sustain himself on his elbows and knees1 and permit her to lift herself1 at least her hips1 by the help of her arms around his waist4 ,this is no hardship for the husband1 if he be a true lover4 ,for is he not strong1 and what is his strength for but to delight his sweetheart8 ,a true1 devoted1 virile and manly lover is always at the service of his sweetheart6 ,to delight her1 is to doubly delight himself4 ,this is another point of which mere animals know nothing4 ,there is nothing in all their nature which responds to the like of this1 in any way4 ,the whole experience is human2 it is productive of a joy1 of a spiritual elevation1 which mere animality knows nothing of--can know nothing of4 ,playing thus together1 courting each other thus 7,for1 through all these actions1 a line of complete mutualness must run6 ,the husband may seem to be specially accommodating himself1 and all he does1 to his wife's whims or necessities2 but1 even so1 this will be more of a delight to him than it is to her1 viewed from the spiritual plane1 on the principle that it is more blessed to give than to receive--and no truer words than these were ever spoken--while1 at the same time1 the wife1 though seeming only to be gratifying herself1 to be reaching after what she alone desires1 yet1 as a matter of fact1 by her very so doing--and the more perfectly1 completely1 she does this1 the better--she is gratifying and delighting her husband to the utmost possible limit7 courting each other thus1 the lovers will learn to time themselves together1 perfectly1 each knowing just when the other is fully ready1 by a sort of spiritual consciousness1 as it were1 and so a perfect climax can be reached4 ,take time1 ,,let ,,love ,,rule ,,and ,,direct2 ,,banish ,,all ,,selfishness2 ,let the husband keep his head1 and ,,the ,,wife ,,utterly ,,lose ,,hers1 throwing it to the winds1 to be wholly swept away by the whirlwind of her passion2 feeling free1 delighting1 to let it go1 go1 go1 no one cares where6 ,do these things1 and married life will be glorious6 ,of such is the kingdom of heaven1 for the truly wedded lovers6 ,this will be all ,greek1 or foolishness to the selfish and materially-minded2 but to the truly wise1 it will be life immeasurable4 ,this is a paradox1 but it takes a paradox to tell the greatest truths6 ,so much for the act of coitus in the man-superior position1 when the wife is slower timed than the husband and they adopt this method1 and the accompanying means for getting together4 ,now1 if the other position is taken1 that of the wife semi-superior1 in the husband's arms1 as he lies partly on his back and partly on his left side1 etc41 here are a few points to be noted to advantage4 ,still assuming that the wife is the slower-timed of the two1 it is entirely possible that when she has come over and has gotten into position1 that she may not yet be fully ready for the union of the organs4 ,the very time that it takes for her to get into position1 the changing of the position of her body1 from her back to her right side2 the temporary cessation of the stroking of the vulva by her husbands's sic fingers2 all these things will have a tendency to retard her passion1 for the time being1 and all this loss ought to be made good1 if not added to1 before the second part of the act is entered upon4 ,and1 in this position1 all this can most happily be brought about1 as follows3-- ,lying in each other's arms1 in this second described position1 the organs naturally come into contact in such a way as to make the further excitation of the vulva and clitoris most natural and easy4 ,the spreading of the wife's hips1 caused by her throwing her left leg over her husband's right and drawing up of her left knee1 opens the vulva wide2 and1 at the same time1 the penis1 from the very nature of its position1 will lie at full length in the opening1 thus exposed--not entering the vagina1 but remaining without the gate as yet4 ,by this time the vulva will have become enlarged and elongated1 the lips full and the clitoris erect1 all in a state of tumescence1 and all covered with the pre-coital fluid2 the lips so distended that1 when thus parted1 they form the sides of a labial canal1 as it were 7a delectable1 and most delicately smooth-walled channel74 ,now1 in this extended condition1 which is fully as long as the penis1 from end to end of its pathway of dalliance1 every part covered with the most delicately sensitive nerve-filaments1 and all of these in an ecstasy of keenness to the sense of touch1 and in the most perfect of love's strolling way1--if the penis1 as it were1 stands up full and strong1 in such fashion that it touches the vulva at every point1 both inner and outer labiae1 the clitoris and all1 for a space of five or six inches in length2 while the protruded and well-moistened lips of the vulva as it were reach out1 and clasp themselves at least half way around their suitor1 laving him with their luscious kisses--in this position1 the wife being partly above1 and so1 perfectly free to move her love way as she will1 she can slide the pathway itself a full six or more inches1 up and down1 stroking all the area against the penis as she moves2 that1 again1 by its very position1 being held firmly in contact by its stiffness and stoutness2 the glans penis throbbing lustily against the clitoris when the two meet at the extreme of the wife's up-stroke2 she1 pausing an instant1 just then1 to more perfectly enjoy the sensation2 the penis slipping past the now wide open vaginal mouth1 which reaches out at every down stroke to engulf it--dallying1 delaying1 coquetting1 tantalizing1 both man and woman2 playing the game in almost a swoon of ecstatic delight--under such conditions the wife's passion will rush to its fullest development1 till1 when she will1 she can drop her vagina upon the penis in such a way that the two will be made one1 in absolute perfection1 on a single move1 and from this to the finish it is but a few motions distant4 ,in some respects this manner of coitus1 and this means of going off together is unsurpassed4 ,which leads to the remark that this position is sometimes the best for the full completion of the act4 ,it is the easiest of all positions1 the least fatiguing4 ,and if the wife is tired1 or not quite up to grade1 she can enjoy an embrace of this sort without fatigue1 even to the full4 ,for the organs can be united in this position quite perfectly1 though the penis will not penetrate the vagina to as great a length as in the other position4 ,still1 the climax can be perfectly reached in this way1 and it is one of the best ways to make sure of perfect timing1 of spending exactly together1 which is greatly in its favor4 ,if there is a mis-matching of the organs1 the vagina of the wife being too short for her husband's penis1 this is a most excellent way for meeting and overcoming that difficulty4 ,this naturally leads to another matter1 as follows3--,it might seem to the reader that the different strokings of the vulva1 with the fingers1 or the penis1 all the contact being outside the vagina1 that all of these methods of excitation smack of masturbation1 and so are of doubtful rightness4 ,in reply to which1 note the following3 ,the entire affair of coition1 in humanity1 has already been shown to be something wholly above and beyond mere animality4 ,it is the exercise of functions that belong only to mankind1 and hence is not amenable to any merely animal laws or restrictions6 ,it is the source of numberless human joys1 and any method of engaging in the act of mutual delight1 that is1 of mutually happifying1 is legitimate and altogether right4 ,and so1 if the parties choose to increase their mutual delight1 if the husband wishes to arouse and intensify his wife's passion by stroking her vulva with his saliva-moistened fingers1 and she wishes him to do so1 such act is as right and as wholesome as is coitus in the by-some-supposed-to-be only way of its exercise4 ,let this never be doubted4 ,the fact is1 this whole matter of sexual excitation by means of the hand1 or in other ways than the union of the organs1 has received a black eye at the hands of would be purists1 which it in no way deserves4 ,as already noted1 the word masturbation has been fastened to such acts1 and then1 any and every form of it has been condemned far beyond what the facts warrant1 till the minds of the rank and file are wholly misled in the premises6 ,when one looks at the situation from the point of view which insists that all the sex functions should be under the control of the will1 then light is thrown upon the entire subject4 ,seen in this way1 any form of sex stimulation1 or auto-erotism even 7auto-erotism means self sex-excitation7 which is ,,not ,,carried ,,to ,,excess1 is right and wholesome6 ,but we have been taught the contrary of this for so long that it is difficult for us to realize that it is true4 ,but it is6 ,hence1 if it should sometimes happen that the husband should arrive at the climax before the wife does1 and he could not bring her to an orgasm by excitation with his spent penis1 it would be perfectly right for him to substitute his fingers1 and satisfy her in that way4 ,of course1 this would not be as satisfying to her as it would have been could she have met him simultaneously1 but it is far better than for her not to be entirely gratified6 ,many a woman ,,suffers ,,all ,,night ,,long with unsatisfied desire1 her organs congested and tumescent1 because she has been left ,,unsatisfied by a husband who has spent before she was ready1 ,,and ,,then ,,left ,,her6 ,such cases might be entirely relieved1 if the parties knew the truth1 and were not too ignorant1 or prejudiced1 or ashamed to do what should be done to make the best of a situation4 ,of course1 no husband should make a practice of gratifying himself fully1 and then bringing his wife to the climax with his fingers4 ,such a practice would be selfish and wrong4 ,but as an emergency way of escape1 the method is to be commended4 ,of course1 as has already been explained1 the husband always has the advantage1 that he can be brought to the orgasm by the insertion of the penis into the vagina1 after his wife has spent1 if she arrives first1 since her organs detumesce slowly1 and their distended condition permits such action on his part1 for some time after she has passed the climax4 ,but not so with the husband4 ,once spent1 his penis shrinks to limpness1 almost immediately1 and in this condition it cannot satisfy the wife in the least1 much less bring her to an orgasm4 ,again1 if1 for any reason1 the wife should be unable to meet her husband in coitus proper1 because of weakness1 or slight illness1 or perhaps some temporary soreness of the parts1 it would help the situation wonderfully if she would take his penis in her hand and play with it till he spent4 ,he would love her for it1 kiss her for it1 give her his soul for it6 ,if a bride and bridegroom knew enough to introduce each other to the delights of an orgasm by spending each other by external excitation of the organs with their hands a few times before they united the organs at all1 it would be to their lasting well being4 ,this is especially true for the bride4 ,if her lover would take her in his arms1 even with all her clothes on1 as she sat on his lap1 in their bridal chamber1 alone1 and stroke her vulva till she spent1 the chances are many to one that he would have introduced her to such a joy that she would never forget it1 all her life4 ,surely1 such method is infinitely superior to raping a bride1 as is so frequently done by the ignorant or goody-good young husband1 who stands upon his rights6 ,indeed1 if a bride to be1 who was so innocent or ignorant of her own sex possibilities that she had never experienced an orgasm--had never spent--could be put wise before her bridal-night1 if she could be instructed enough to lead her to engage in some form of auto-erotism1 bringing herself to an orgasm with her own hand1 just for the sake of the experience it would give her1 and so that she would have some clear idea of what she really wanted1 before she went into the arms of her lover--if she could do this1 in the right mental attitude1 it would be greatly to her well-being1 a worthy and valuable addition to her stock of knowledge of herself and of the powers that are latent within her4 ,her alleged loss of innocence by such act would be as nothing compared with the wisdom she would gain by the experience4 ,when innocence leads to harmful results1 it is time it was ended1 and that knowledge takes its place6 ,as for the husband1 the chances are not one in a million that he will be ignorant of what an orgasm is like before he marries1 since all healthy young men spend at least once a week1 automatically1 if not otherwise6 ,let it be said further1 that auto-erotism1 self-spending1 may be practiced by both men and women1 to their healthful benefit1 when sexual exercise cannot be secured in any other way4 ,it is only when carried to excess that such action is in any way harmful4 ,the only danger is1 that1 the individual being alone and having all the means for self-gratification in his or her own hands1 so to speak1 it is quite possible to indulge in the action too freely1 which1 of course1 leads to bad results4 ,but the act itself is not bad4 ,on the contrary1 when kept within bounds1 it is healthful and wholesome4 ,there are many unmarried women1 maiden ladies1 and especially widows1 who would greatly improve their health if they practiced some form of auto-erotism1 occasionally4 ,when husbands and wives are forced to be much away from each other1 it is right for them to occasionally satisfy themselves in this way1 their souls filled with loving thoughts of the absent one the while4 ,there is any amount of nonsense current about auto-erotism4 ,as a matter of fact1 all boys masturbate1 and many girls also4 ,some authors claim that more than half of all women engage in some form of auto-erotism1 at some time in their lives1 and the estimate is probably too low rather than too high4 ,but1 unless they carry the act to excess1 they are guilty of no wrong4 ,not infrequently1 they may make the act a means of great good to themselves4 ,the sex organs are alive6 ,they constantly secrete fluids that need to be excreted1 as all other organs of the body do4 ,they ought to be relieved1 as their nature requires they should be4 ,if this cannot be accomplished as the most natural way prescribes1 it is only right to do the next best thing4 ,only1 it should not be carried to excess4 ,be temperate in all things4 ,gratify yourself1 but don't ,,abuse yourself4 ,auto-erotism1 or masturbation1 should never be permitted to become self-abuse1 nor is there any need that it should ever do so4 ,it should be self-upbuilding1 not self degrading4 ,rightly used it can be thus4 ,,ix ,,coitus ,,reservatus ,this brings us to another item in the matter of sexual exercise on the part of the husband and wife1 as follows3-- ,it should be the constant aim and endeavor of both parties to continually lift all sex affairs above the plane of animality1 mere physical gratification1 into the realm of mental and spiritual delight4 ,to this end1 let it be said at once that such a condition can be reached1 in the greatest degree1 by the practice of what is known1 in scientific terms1 as coitus reservatus1 which1 translated1 means going only part of the way in the act1 and not carrying it to its climax1 the orgasm4 ,described in terms with which the reader is now familiar1 it means1 carrying the act only through the first and second stages1 the courting stage1 and the union of the organs1 and stopping there6 ,this may seem1 at first thought1 neither right nor wise1 but1 as a matter of fact1 it is both1 as thousands of most happily married people have proved4 ,going a bit into details1 this act of reservatus really unites the first two parts of the act into a common whole1 making it simply one continuous piece of courting1 merely that1 and nothing more4 ,it is almost entirely a mental and spiritual love-embrace2 and in its perfection1 it exalts the husband and wife to the topmost heights of mental and spiritual enjoyment and expression4 ,to engage in this form of coitus1 not nearly the effort should be made to arouse the sexual passions of either of the parties1 as has already been described as fitting for complete coitus4 ,the orgasm is not the desideratum in this case1 but it is just a delightful expression of mutual love4 ,it is a sort of prolonged and all-embracing kiss1 in which the sex organs are included as well as the lips4 ,they kiss each other1 as the lips kiss each other4 ,it is courting1 par excellence1 without the hampering of clothes or conventionality of any kind4 ,in this act1 the lovers simply drift1 petting each other1 chatting with each other1 visiting1 loving1 caressing in any one or all of a thousand ways4 ,the hands wander idly over the body1 the husband's right hand being specially free and in perfect position to stroke his wife's back1 her hips1 her legs1 and pet her from top to toe4 ,as this part of the act continues1 it is the most natural thing in the world that the sex organs should tumesce1 and that there should be a flow of both prostatic and pre-coital fluids4 ,that is1 the organs quietly and naturally make themselves ready for meeting4 ,and when they are duly tumescent1 are properly enlarged and lubricated1 let the wife come over into her lover's arms1 ,,in ,,the ,,second ,,position described1 and the organs be slipped together easily1 delightfully1 and then1 let them stay so1 fully together1 but do not go on with the third part of the act1 the motion of the organs4 ,just lie still and enjoy the embrace1 kiss1 chat1 court1 love1 dream1 enjoy6 ,this union can be protracted to almost any length1 after the lovers learn how to do it4 ,sometimes the organs may be together only a few minutes1 sometimes for an hour1 or even longer4 ,if the parties get tired1 or sleepy1 part the organs1 kiss good-night1 and go to sleep4 ,although it is not at all uncommon for such lovers1 who have fully learned this art1 to go to sleep thus1 in each other's arms1 their sex organs united2 and1 in this position1 have the organs detumesce1 the penis grow limp and slip out of the vagina of its own accord1 while the vagina also grows small and the clitoris subsides4 ,this experience is most delightful and if once experienced1 once well mastered by the husband and wife1 it will continually grow in favor1 to their mutual benefit4 ,this method is of special service during the unfree time4 ,if rightly used1 it will not tend to increase the desire for spending1 but it will1 on the contrary1 allay and satisfy the sexual desires1 most perfectly4 ,if1 while learning how1 sometimes the inexperienced should get run away with1 and feel that it is better to go on and have the climax1 all right4 ,but1 as time goes on1 the practice of carrying the act only to the end of the second part1 will grow1 and in due time be well established4 ,those who have mastered this wholesome and loving art will sometimes meet in this way a score of times during a month or so1 without once coming to the climax4 ,such meeting can be as often as the parties choose1 and of as long1 or as short duration as they elect4 ,it is often an excellent way1 to say good-night2 and if1 on waking in the morning1 there is time before rising for a little court1 this slipping the organs together1 for just a minute1 is a most excellent way to begin the day4 ,the art is worth learning1 and most people can learn it1 if they try1 and are of the right spirit6 ,to go back a little3 ,in speaking of mutual masturbation on the part of the husband and wife1 this method of satisfying the sex nature is of great value1 sometimes1 especially for use during the unfree time4 ,if1 during these two weeks1 the parties get waked up1 and feel the need of sex exercise1 they can satisfy each other with their hands in a way that will be a great relief to each4 ,this is specially true for the husband2 and a wife1 who is enough of a woman to thus meet her husband's sex-needs1 with her hand1 when it is not expedient for him to meet her otherwise1 is a wife to worship6 ,sometimes1 during the five days of menstruation1 during which time the union of the organs is deemed not best1 the wife can thus help her lover with her hand1 to their delight and benefit4 ,let love direct the way here1 and all will be well4 ,and here is a curious fact3 ,the hand of the opposite sex will produce effects on the genitals of the other which will not be produced in any other way4 ,thus1 a man may hold his penis in his own hand for a given length of time1 longer or shorter1 and no result will be effected1 no secretion of prostate fluid be made1 at all4 ,but let his wife take his penis in her hand for the same length of time1 and the flow of prostatic fluid will at once take place4 ,this is true whether the penis be erect or detumescent4 ,if the wife will hold her husband's limp penis in her hand for but a few minutes1 even though the organ remains limp1 the flow of prostatic fluid will take place6 ,the same is true with regard to the husband's putting his hand on his wife's vulva4 ,should she hold her hand there1 no pre-coital fluid would be secreted4 ,with her husband's hand there1 the flow would at once begin4 ,this is a remarkable physical and psychological phenomenon1 and it is one especially worthy of note4 ,it is this fact that makes mutual masturbation far superior to auto-erotism4 ,a husband can thus satisfy a wife with his fingers1 or a wife her husband with her hand1 far better than either could bring himself or herself to the climax alone4 ,this point is of great import1 in considering many of the sex acts of husband and wife4 ,as a rule1 let the husband and wife do whatever their desire prompts or suggests1 and just as they feel they would ,,like to4 ,only this1 let all be in moderation4 ,carry nothing to excess6 ,which suggests the question often asked3 ,how frequently may coitus be engaged in8 ,the answer is1 just as often as is desired by both parties1 but never to the point of weariness or depletion of the physical1 mental or spiritual body4 ,use good sense here as elsewhere4 ,we eat when we are hungry1 but it is wrong to gorge oneself with food4 ,the same rule holds with regard to sex exercise4 ,satisfy the calls of nature1 but ,,never1 overdo the matter4 ,,be ,,temperate1 ,,manly1 ,,womanly6 ,don't be afraid or ashamed to do what your desire and your best judgment say is right4 ,use common sense1 and you will not go wrong4 ,and don't wear each other out1 either both together1 or the one the other4 ,many men insist on their rights 7,,they ,,have ,,no ,,rights7 and greatly debilitate themselves by excess of coition with their wives4 ,per contra1 there are some women who wear the lives out of their husbands by the excessive calls they make upon them for sex-gratification4 ,in the latter case1 a man will go to pieces much faster than a woman who is over-taxed4 ,to satisfy such a woman1 a man must spend at least once every time his wife calls on him4 ,this draws on his vital fluids1 at every embrace2 but1 as has been stated1 there is no escape of vital fluid from the woman1 when she spends1 and so she can reach and pass the orgasm1 time and again1 and still not have her vitality taxed4 ,indeed1 in some cases1 the oftener a woman spends1 the more animated1 robust and healthful she becomes4 ,in case unmatched people meet as husband and wife1 they should do their best to adjust themselves to each other's condition1 keeping always in mind the best welfare1 each of the other4 ,there are records of women who delight to spend a dozen times in a single night4 ,one queen made a law that every man should cohabit with his wife at least seven times each night6 ,of course1 she was an abnormal woman1 though the author once knew a good orthodox deacon who would have been delighted to live under the rule of such a law1 for seven times a night was the limit his wife imposed upon him6 ,he was also abnormal4 ,luther said twice a week was the rule for coitus1 and this is a very common practice4 ,no absolute rule can be given1 however1 except for each couple to act as they feel1 keeping always within the bounds of common sense and true temperance4 ,there are some men and women so constituted1 nervously1 or by temperament1 that they are obliged to rigorously limit their acts of coition4 ,some men cannot engage in the act more than once or twice a month and maintain their health4 ,for them1 the act draws on their vitality so severely that it quite upsets them1 in almost every case4 ,during the act1 they are subjected to nervous shocks1 they see stars1 and undergo rigors and nervous sweats which are severely debilitating4 ,often1 too1 they will lie awake all night after engaging in the act1 and be more or less of a wreck for a day or two afterwards4 ,some women1 too1 are of a similar nature of organization1 and undergo similar experiences4 ,of course1 in all such cases1 unusual care should be taken never to reach the point of excess4 ,it is unfortunate if people are married who are ill-matched in this regard1 especially so if the difference between the two is of a pronounced nature1 as when the husband or the wife is very amorous and virile1 while his or her mate is unable to engage in the act1 to any considerable extent1 without suffering therefrom4 ,if such case arises1 the best should be made of the situation1 the more robust party accommodating himself or herself to the incompetency or inability of the other1 and the weaker one doing all that can rightly be done to strengthen and develop his or her infirmity4 ,if this is done1 the chances are many to one that1 as times goes on1 the parties will grow more and more alike--the strong becoming more docile and the weaker one more robust4 ,take time1 love each other1 court and be courted1 and only the best results trill come of it all4 ,now there are some women who are called anesthetic1 that is1 they have no sex-passion1 though the sex parts may be normal4 ,many physicians declare that as high as forty per cent of the women who are reared in modern social life are thus lacking4 ,these women engage in coitus1 though they get no pleasure from the act4 ,they never reach the orgasm1 and have no sensation of delight from the act2 they seldom secrete the pre-coital fluid1 and hence the union of the organs1 or their motion1 are never easy or pleasurable4 ,they can become mothers1 and often such bear many children4 ,such condition is greatly to be regretted1 and many women suffer greatly from this cause4 ,it is highly probable1 though1 that many women who are counted as thus lacking are not1 really1 so6 ,many women will begin married life wholly anesthetic1 and1 often1 sometime will become normal in this regard4 ,this often happens4 ,the probability is that many wives are not properly courted by their husbands--,,the ,,first ,,part ,,of ,,the ,,act ,,is ,,neglected1 or the husband merely acts on his rights--cohabits like a goat1 all in an instant1 anxious only to gratify his own lust2 and that1 under such treatment1 the wife never gets a fair chance to really know her own powers4 ,such cases are sad beyond telling4 ,for the most part1 they are the result of ignorance on the part of the husband1 and innocence and wrong teaching--wrong mental attitude--on the part of the wife4 ,,hence ,,the ,,need ,,of ,,instructions ,,to ,,both4 ,but if almost any woman will get the right mental attitude toward sex-meeting1 and then can be courted1 as has been prescribed in these pages1 the cases are rare indeed where a woman can be found who is really anesthetic4 ,if you1 wife1 or you1 husband1 are up against such a condition1 try courting1 as herewith laid down1 in a proper mood and spirit1 and you will come out all right4 ,there is no doubt of it4 ,on the contrary1 if the man is impotent there is small hope of his ever coming out of such condition1 and the chances are many to one that he will never be able to satisfy his wife sexually4 ,he may be a good man1 in a way1 but he can never be a good husband1 in the full meaning of that word4 ,on the other hand1 if a woman marries for money1 or a home1 or position1 or place1 or power1 or a meal-ticket--for anything but love1 she will doubtless be anesthetic and stay so4 ,she deserves to6 ,she sells herself for a mess of pottage1 whoever she is4 ,she may be a good woman1 but she can never be a good wife4 ,the question is sometimes asked as to how late in life the sex organs can function pleasurably and wholesomely for the parties concerned4 ,and here1 as elsewhere1 the reply can only be that it all depends on the individual4 ,but this is true1 that1 as a rule1 the status of the individual during the years of active life will persist1 even to old age1 if the sex-functions are used and not abused4 ,there is no function of the body1 however1 which will go to pieces quicker1 and ever after be a wreck1 as will the sex organs1 if they are not treated rightly4 ,and this works both ways3 ,if too rigorously held in check1 if denied all functioning whatever1 the parts will atrophy1 to the detriment of the whole nature1 physical1 mental1 and spiritual4 ,the body will become dried up1 the sex organs shriveled1 and a corresponding shrinking of the whole man or woman1 in all parts of the being1 is very apt to follow4 ,on the other hand1 an excess of sex-functioning will soon deprive the individual of all such power whatsoever4 ,a man will1 in his comparatively early life1 lose the power of erection1 or tumescence entirely1 as a result of excess1 either by masturbation or from too frequent coitus2 and on the part of the woman1 many unfortunate conditions are liable to arise4 ,however1 for reasons that have already been stated1 a woman who is strongly sexed1 and of a pronounced amorous nature1 can maintain even great excess of sex exercise without suffering such ill results as would befall a man who should so indulge4 ,that is1 an excessively passionate wife can far sooner wear the life out of a husband who is only moderately amorous1 than can an abnormally passionate husband wear out a moderately amorous wife4 ,but if the sex nature of the husband and wife are well cared for during the years of active life1 neither too much restrained or too profusely exercised1 the functioning power of the sex organs will remain1 even to old age1 with all their pleasure-giving powers and sensations intact4 ,this is a wonderful physiological fact1 which leads to a conclusion1 as follows3-- ,this fact of the staying qualities of the power of sex functioning1 even to old age1 is the supreme proof of the fact that sex1 in the human family1 serves a purpose other than reproduction6 ,for1 see6 ,a woman loses the power to conceive when she reaches the turn of life1 when her menses cease1 that is1 when she is between forty and fifty years of age4 ,and if pleasure in coition serves only to induce her to engage in the act for the purpose of increasing the probability of her becoming pregnant1 if this is the sole purpose of desire for sex intercourse1 such desire1 such pleasure1 ought to cease at that period of feminine life4 ,but this is by no means the case6 ,if a wife is a normal woman1 sexually1 and has neither abused her sex nature or had it abused1 or neglected1 and is a well woman1 she will enjoy coitus as much after she has passed her three score and ten date in her life as she did before6 ,she may not care to engage in the act as frequently as in her younger days2 but if she is well courted by her old lover1 all the joys of the former days are still hers1 to as great a degree as ever4 ,and what is true of her is true of her husband1 if he is well preserved1 as she is1 has never abused himself or been abused4 ,this is a reward of virtue1 for old lovers1 that pays a big premium on righteous sex-action in earlier years6 ,more than all1 it is a proof1 beyond all question1 that the purpose of sex in humanity is something more than procreation1 that there is such a thing as the ,art of ,love1 and that it ought to be taught and well learned by every husband and wife1 in their early married life4 ,x ,,cleanliness ,it would hardly seem necessary to be said1 and yet many experiences of husbands and wives prove that it needs to be said1 that both parties should take great pains to keep their bodies1 all parts of them1 always sweet and clean4 ,strange as it may seem1 many wives are exceedingly careless in this respect6 ,it is a matter of common report among men1 that harlots take more pains to make and keep their bodies1 and especially their genitals1 clean and attractive1 than many wives do6 ,surely1 this ought not to be so1 and yet it often is4 ,and that it is1 is only one more unfortunate result that springs from the feeling of ,oh1 we are married now4 ,the wife or the husband feels that there is no longer any need of wooing each other4 ,all of which leads to woe1 woe1 woe6 ,the wife should keep her whole body so sweet and clean that her husband can kiss her from top to toe1 if he wants to--and the chances are that he will want to1 if she so keeps herself6 ,in the one case1 such a caress is a bit of heaven to a husband1 in the other it is a bit of hell6 ,it will disgust where it ought to delight4 ,and when a wife disgusts her husband1 the end of a happy married life has come6 ,the wife should always wash her vulva with soap and warm water before retiring1 and if reservatus is to be engaged in in the morning1 after urination1 she should thoroughly cleanse the parts before union takes place4 ,let her be ever mindful to keep her love cup worthy to meet its lover4 ,and the husband should be equally careful to keep his body sweet and clean4 ,he should wash the glans penis thoroughly1 with soap and water1 at least once every day1 drawing the foreskin back so as to fully cleanse the indenture above the gland1 which secretes a substance that very soon emits an offensive odor unless removed4 ,both parties should keep their arm pits so that they will not be smelly1 and the feet should likewise be kept inodorous4 ,one of the chief objections to smoking or chewing tobacco is that it spoils the breath1 and so makes it offensive to the wife1 whereas it should be most attractive4 ,in a word1 both the husband and wife cannot be too careful1 in all ways1 in making and keeping their bodies mutually attractive4 ,as has already been said1 the sole aim of all the sexual experience of a husband and wife should be to raise the function more and more away from the plane of physical gratification and elevate it continually towards the realm of mental and spiritual delight4 ,this is a mission of sex in the human family that should be made the most of4 ,it involves the cultivation of the ,art of ,love1 which is truly the art of arts1 par excellence4 ,the secret of success in establishing righteous and happy sex relations between husband and wife is1 on the part of the man1 that all his actions should be those of a loving gentleman4 ,this does not mean effeminacy on his part--he must be virile1 bold1 strong1 aggressive1 positive1 compelling4 ,and yet1 all these manly virtues must be expressed in terms of loving and gentle ,,acts4 ,this is a paradox1 but it is true6 ,on the part of the woman1 the chief item on her side is1 for her to attain a correct mental and spiritual attitude toward her own sex-nature and that of her husband1 and toward their common expression4 ,all her training and environment now hinder her from such achievement2 but if she be a true woman1 her nature will reveal the truth to her1 and if she will trust to that--do what that prompts her to do1 she will come out all right4 ,it will take time to reach such results2 but if she will persist1 she will succeed4 ,let her come to the realization of the fact that sex in men and women is not unclean1 vulgar1 lowdown1 sinful2 but that it is clean1 pure1 lofty1 ,,god-,,born6 ,rightly exercised1 it leads to the highest well-being of both the husband and wife2 it brings them to their physical1 mental and spiritual noblest and best4 ,let the wife get this view of the situation1 which is the only true view1 and then let her act accordingly1 and she will have attained4 ,a husband and wife who have reached this modus vivendi have established a heaven on earth4 ,,editor',s ,,note ,dr4 ,long's description of ,free ,time should be thoroughly understood by the readers of this book4 ,since it is practically impossible to conduct exact scientific tests under strict control 7the reason for which can be readily understood7 there is much difference of opinion among physicians and sexologists on this subject4 ,some say there is no such thing as ,free ,time4 ,others agree with ,dr4 ,long that there is a period of ,free ,time4 ,still a third group take the conservative viewpoint that further proof is necessary4 ,the publishers offer this explanation as a necessary comment4 ,,xi ,,pregnancy ,and now just a few words about having children1 and this treatise will end4 ,as has already been said1 every true husband and wife who are well enough and strong enough1 and who are reasonably furnished with this world's goods1 ought to have and rear at least two children4 ,the world needs at least so many1 even if all children lived and grew up1 to keep up the constant number of people on the earth4 ,but1 far more than this1 the husband and wife need children to make a home complete1 and a complete home is the supreme attainment of human life6 ,this does not mean that people should not marry unless they can have children2 there are many women who should never even try to become mothers4 ,but these should not be deprived of all sexual joys for this reason4 ,on the contrary1 it is for their best good1 in most cases1 that they should marry and so live normal sex lives1 in all respects except parenthood4 ,but1 for the most part1 husbands and wives can have children1 if they so desire1 and they ,,should so desire4 ,and1 so desiring1 the question is1 ,how can they best fulfil such desire8 ,as a matter of fact1 there is very little that is really known about the begetting of children1 and the securing of the best results from such action4 ,the laws of human heredity are1 as yet1 for the most part1 unknown4 ,but common sense would seem to indicate a few things that must be best in the premises4 ,thus1 it would seem to be for the best that the husband and wife should be in good physical condition when a child is begotten4 ,more than this1 it would seem right that the act of begetting should be a deliberate1 and not a mere chance begetting4 ,hence1 in general1 it is well for the husband and wife to agree upon a time for the begetting of a child1 and deliberately accomplish a sex-meeting for such purpose4 ,although1 one instinctively feels that such a deliberate meeting might be too matter of fact--too cold and formal1 lacking in warm blood and genuine emotion2 still1 the probabilities are that even this could be overcome1 if kept in mind and provided for4 ,referring to the things that have already been said1 of course an embrace which is to result in pregnancy should be one of the most perfect that can possibly be experienced1 one in which1 in an ecstasy of love's delight1 husband and wife merge their souls and bodies into a perfect oneness--it would seem that from such a meeting the best1 and only the best results could come4 ,and so if the husband and wife will agree that from a given time on1 they will cease to have a care to prevent conception2 and then1 sometime immediately following the fifth day after the beginning of the menstrual flow1 they will naturally meet in a perfect embrace1 the probabilities are that they will have done the best possible to secure the highest attainable results from the act of begetting a child4 ,as a rule1 the proper time for such begetting is between the fifth and the tenth day after the beginning of the menstrual flow4 ,it is sometimes best1 however1 to make the meeting earlier than this1 even before the flow has ceased4 ,some women will conceive then who cannot do so at any other time4 ,and so1 if a wife should be unable to conceive between the fifth and the tenth day1 as noted1 let an earlier date be tried4 ,if this should fail1 consult a reliable physician4 ,it ought to be said1 too1 that putting off having children too long1 is very apt to result in the sterility of the wife4 ,many a young wife1 who has really wanted to have children sometime1 and who would be greatly grieved if she thought she could not bear a child1 has kept putting it off1 and has done this so often1 and for so long1 that1 when the convenient day does come1 she finds that she has sinned away her day of grace4 ,speaking generally1 the first baby should be born not much later than two years after marriage4 ,there are1 of course1 exceptions to this1 but it is a good rule to go by4 ,have your children when you are young6 ,this is common sense1 it comes out best in the long run1 and is the best thing to do1 ninety-nine times in a hundred4 ,then1 you are nearer the age of your children as they grow up than if you waited till you were in the late thirties before the children came4 ,if your son or daughter is only twenty-some years younger than you are1 you can be kids with them4 ,if you are forty years old when they are born1 you will always be old folks to them4 ,have the babies when you are young4 ,it is far better so4 ,if no children come from the meeting of husband and wife consult a good doctor4 ,but1 in such event1 if neither of the parties is to blame--or even otherwise1 make the best of the situation1 love each other1 and make the most of wedded life with what is left4 ,above all1 with children or without 7and a thousand times better with7 make a home that is a home4 ,that is what sex in the human family1 what married life is for--to make a home4 ,nearly all that makes a home is centered around sex4 ,no two normal men can make a home6 ,no two normal women can make a home6 ,it takes a man and a woman to make a home4 ,it takes father1 mother and children to make the most perfect home4 ,make up your minds to have a most perfect home1 and do your utmost to reach that goal6 ,the query often arises in the minds of conscientious husbands and wives whether or not it is right to engage in coitus during pregnancy4 ,on this point authorities differ1 though most of them hold against such practice4 ,the reasons they give for such adverse decision are all based on the same old infernal lie1 namely1 that1 sexually1 man is a mere animal1 and so is subject to the laws and practices of mere animality4 ,this is the worst outrage ever perfected by a false philosophy1 which is heralded as the will of ,god4 ,out on it1 altogether6 ,the simple truth1 is that1 if the husband and wife have mastered the ,art of ,love1 so that they mutually desire each other1 and both long for sex exercise during the gestation period1 it is perfectly right and ,,wise for them to satisfy their natural ,,common wishes4 ,of course1 in such exercise1 the utmost care should be taken not to press too hard upon the pelvic region of the woman1 and in this regard1 the word of caution needs to be heeded1 as much by the prospective mother as by her mate4 ,for1 in the intensity of an orgasm1 she may be tempted to crowd her body too violently against her husband1 and so possible harm might result4 ,especially if the husband-superior position is taken during the act1 he should be doubly careful not to permit the weight of his body to rest upon the enlarged part of the wife's anatomy1 not in the least4 ,indeed1 the safest position for coitus1 during pregnancy is1 the woman on her back1 and the man with his hips on the bed below hers1 so that there is no possibility of pressure on her abdomen1 which is perfectly free1 in this position4 ,in this position1 the act may be engaged in1 during pregnancy1 as often as mutually desired1 to the benefit of both parties4 ,many pregnant women are more than usually passionate during the period of gestation4 ,this is especially the case when the wife is happy in her condition1 when she rejoices with exceeding great joy that she is on the way to experience the divine crown of wifehood--maternity6 ,when such a woman desires her husband in love's embrace1 it is cruel to deprive her of her longed-for delight4 ,again1 a wife1 unpregnant1 and when she rightfully wishes to remain so1 may be somewhat fearful of becoming pregnant when she meets her husband1 and so hesitate to give her passion full play1 thereby missing the utmost delights of an embrace--but if she be pregnant1 and so has no fear on this score1 she can give herself up to utter abandonment to her impulses4 ,on this point1 the final word is1 use common sense1 in a spirit of absolute ,,mutuality4 ,it goes without saying that it would be wicked1 not to say a crime1 for a husband to compel his wife to engage in coitus during pregnancy1 against her will4 ,on the other hand1 many a wife has first experienced an orgasm when meeting her husband during pregnancy4 ,the reason for this is that her fear of becoming pregnant is not then present--a condition which has before kept her from the climax4 ,it is further true that many a wife will greatly relieve and delight her husband if1 on occasion1 and as both may desire1 she will relieve him with her hand2 or sometimes1 that they engage in mutual relief by this means during pregnancy4 ,,xii ,,conclusion ,in closing this volume1 the author wishes to say1 as in opening1 that no apology is offered for what has been written or said herewith4 ,all has been set down in love1 by a lover1 for the sake of lovers yet to be1 in the hope of
