brethren1 could not speak unto you as unto spiritual1 but as unto carnal4 ,the apostle here speaks of two stages of the ,christian life1 two types of ,christians3 ,i could not speak unto you as unto spiritual1 but as unto carnal1 even as unto babes in ,christ4 ,they were ,christians1 in ,christ1 but instead of being spiritual ,christians1 they were carnal4 ,i have fed you with milk1 and not with meat1 for hitherto ye were not able to bear it1 neither yet are ye able1 for ye are yet carnal4 ,here is that word a second time4 ,for whereas--this is the proof--there is among you envying1 and strife1 and divisions1 are ye not carnal1 and walk as men8 ,for while one saith1 ,i am of ,paul1 and another1 ,i am of ,apollos1 are ye not carnal8 ,four times the apostle uses that word carnal4 ,in the wisdom which the ,holy ,ghost gives him1 ,paul feels3--,i can not write to these ,corinthian ,christians unless ,i know their state1 and unless ,i tell them of it4 ,if ,i give spiritual food to men who are carnal ,christians1 ,i am doing them more harm than good1 for they are not fit to take it4 ,i cannot feed them with meat1 ,i must feed them with milk4 ,and so he tells them at the very outset of the epistle what he sees to be their state4 ,in the two previous chapters he had spoken about his ministry being by the ,holy ,spirit2 now he begins to tell them what must be the state of a people in order to accept spiritual truth1 and he says3 ,i have not liberty to speak to you as ,i would1 for you are carnal1 and you cannot receive ,spiritual truth4 ,that suggests to us the solemn thought1 that in the ,church of ,christ there are two classes of ,christians4 ,some have lived many years as believers1 and yet always remain babes2 others are spiritual men1 because they have given themselves up to the power1 the leading and to the entire rule of the ,holy ,ghost4 ,if we are to obtain a blessing1 we must first decide to which of these classes we belong4 ,are we1 by the grace of ,god1 in deep humility living a spiritual life1 or are we living a carnal life8 ,then1 let us first try to understand what is meant by the carnal state in which believers may be living4 ,we notice from what we find in ,corinthians1 four marks of the carnal state4 ,first3 ,it is simply a condition of protracted infancy4 ,you know what that means4 ,suppose a beautiful babe1 six months old4 ,it cannot speak1 it cannot walk1 but we do not trouble ourselves about that2 it is natural1 and ought to be so4 ,but suppose a year later we find the child not grown at all1 and three years later still no growth2 we would at once say3 ,there must be some terrible disease2 and the baby that at six months old was the cause of joy to every one who saw him1 has become to the mother and to all a source of anxiety and sorrow4 ,there is something wrong2 the child can not grow4 ,it was quite right at six months old that it should eat nothing but milk2 but years have passed by1 and it remains in the same weakly state4 ,now this is just the condition of many believers4 ,they are converted2 they know what it is to have assurance and faith2 they believe in pardon for sin2 they begin to work for ,god2 and yet1 somehow1 there is very little growth in spirituality1 in the real heavenly life4 ,we come into contact with them1 and we feel at once there is something wanting2 there is none of the beauty of holiness or of the power of ,god's ,spirit in them4 ,this is the condition of the carnal ,corinthians1 expressed in what was said to the ,hebrews3 ,you have had the ,gospel so long that by this time you ought to be teachers1 and yet you need that men should teach you the very rudiments of the oracles of ,god4 ,is it not a sad thing to see a believer who has been converted five1 ten1 twenty years1 and yet no growth1 and no strength1 and no joy of holiness8 ,what are the marks of a little child8 ,one is1 a little child cannot help himself1 but is always keeping others occupied to serve him4 ,what a tyrant a baby in a house often is6 ,the mother cannot go out1 there must be a servant to nurse it2 it needs to be cared for constantly4 ,god made a man to care for others1 but the baby was made to be cared for and to be helped4 ,so there are ,christians who always want help4 ,their pastor and their ,christian friends must always be teaching and comforting them4 ,they go to church1 and to prayer-meetings1 and to conventions1 always wanting to be helped1--a sign of spiritual infancy4 ,the other sign of an infant is this3 he can do nothing to help his fellow-man4 ,every man is expected to contribute something to the welfare of society2 every one has a place to fill and a work to do1 but the babe can do nothing for the common weal4 ,it is just so with ,christians4 ,how little some can do6 ,they take a part in work1 as it is called1 but there is little of exercising spiritual power and carrying real blessing4 ,should we not each ask1 ,have ,i outgrown my spiritual infancy8 ,some must reply1 ,no1 instead of having gone forward1 ,i have gone backward1 and the joy of conversion and the first love is gone4 ,alas6 ,they are babes in ,christ2 they are yet carnal4 ,the second mark of the carnal state is this3 that there is sin and failure continually4 ,paul says3 ,whereas there is strife and division among you1 and envying1 are ye not carnal8 ,a man gives way to temper4 ,he may be a minister1 or a preacher of the ,gospel1 or a ,sunday-school teacher1 most earnest at the prayer-meeting1 but yet strife or bitterness or envying is often shown by him4 ,alas6 ,alas6 ,in ,gal4 #c3e we are told that the works of the flesh are specially hatred and envy4 ,how often among ,christians1 who have to work together1 do we see divisions and bitterness6 ,god have mercy upon them1 that the fruit of the ,spirit1 which is love1 is so frequently absent from ,his own people4 ,you ask1 ,why is it1 that for twenty years ,i have been fighting with my temper1 and can not conquer it8 ,it is because you have been fighting with the temper1 and you have not been fighting with the root of the temper4 ,you have not seen that it is all because you are in the carnal state1 and not properly given up to the ,spirit of ,god4 ,it may be that you never were taught it2 that you never saw it in ,god's ,word2 that you never believed it4 ,but there it is2 the truth of ,god remains unchangeable4 ,jesus ,christ can give us the victory over sin1 and can keep us from actual transgression4 ,i am not telling you that the root of sin will be eradicated1 and that you will have no longer any natural tendency to sin2 but when the ,holy ,spirit comes not only with ,his power for service as a gift1 but when ,he comes in ,divine grace to fill the heart1 there is victory over sin2 power not to fulfill the lusts of the flesh4 ,and you see a mark of the carnal state not only in unlovingness1 self-consciousness and bitterness1 but in so many other sins4 ,how much worldliness1 how much ambition among men1 how much seeking for the honor that comes from man--all the fruit of the carnal life--to be found in the midst of ,christian activity6 ,let us remember that the carnal state is a state of continual sinning and failure1 and ,god wants us not only to make confession of individual sins1 but to come to the acknowledgment that they are the sign that we are not living a healthy life1--we are yet carnal4 ,a third mark which will explain further what ,i have been saying1 is that this carnal state may be found in existence in connection with great spiritual gifts4 ,there is a difference between gifts and graces4 ,the graces of the ,spirit are humility and love1 like the humility and love of ,christ4 ,the graces of the ,spirit are to make a man free from self2 the gifts of the ,spirit are to fit a man for work4 ,we see this illustrated among the ,corinthians4 ,in the first chapter ,paul says1 ,i thank ,god that you are enriched unto all utterance1 and all knowledge1 and all wisdom4 ,in the #abth and #adth chapters we see that the gifts of prophecy and of working miracles were in great power among them2 but the graces of the ,spirit were noticeably absent4 ,and this may be in our days as well as in the time of the ,corinthians4 ,i may be a minister of the ,gospel2 ,i may teach ,god's ,word beautifully2 ,i may have influence1 and gather a large congregation1 and yet1 alas6 ,i may be a carnal man2 a man who may be used by ,god1 and may be a blessing to others1 and yet the carnal life may still mark me4 ,you all know the law that a thing is named according to what is its most prominent characteristic4 ,now1 in these carnal ,corinthians there was a little of ,god's ,spirit1 but the flesh predominated2 the ,spirit had not the rule of their whole life4 ,and the spiritual men are not called so because there is no flesh in them1 but because the ,spirit in them has obtained dominance1 and when you meet them and have intercourse with them1 you feel that the ,spirit of ,god has sanctified them4 ,ah1 let us beware lest the blessing ,god gives us in our work deceive us and lead us to think that because he has blessed us1 we must be spiritual men4 ,god may give us gifts that we use1 and yet our lives may not be wholly in the power of the ,holy ,ghost4 ,my last mark of the carnal state is that it makes a man unfit for receiving spiritual truths4 ,that is what the apostle writes to the ,corinthians3 ,i could not preach to you as unto spiritual2 you are not fit for spiritual truth after being ,christians so long2 you can not yet bear it2 ,i have to feed you with milk4 ,i am afraid that in the church of the nineteenth century we often make a terrible mistake4 ,we have a congregation in which the majority are carnal men4 ,we give these men spiritual teaching1 and they admire it1 understand it1 and rejoice in such ministry2 yet their lives are not practically affected4 ,they work for ,christ in a certain way1 but we can scarce recognize the true sanctification of the ,spirit2 we dare not say they are spiritual men1 full of the ,holy ,spirit4 ,now1 let us recognize this with regard to ourselves4 ,a man may become very earnest1 may take in all the teaching he hears2 he may be able to discern1 for discernment is a gift2 he may say1 ,that man helps me in this line1 and that man in another direction1 and a third man is remarkable for another gift2 yet1 all the time1 the carnal life may be living strongly in him1 and when he gets into trouble with some friend1 or ,christian worker1 or worldly man1 the carnal root is bearing its terrible fruit1 and the spiritual food has failed to enter his heart4 ,beware of that4 ,mark the ,corinthians and learn of them4 ,paul did not say to them1 ,you can not bear the truth as ,i would speak it to you1 because they were ignorant or a stupid people4 ,the ,corinthians prided themselves on their wisdom1 and sought it above everything1 and ,paul said3 ,i thank ,god that you are enriched in utterance1 in knowledge1 and in wisdom2 nevertheless1 you are yet carnal1 your life is not holy2 your life is not sanctified unto the humility of the life of the ,lamb of ,god1 you can not yet take in real spiritual truth4 ,we find the carnal state not only at ,corinth1 but throughout the ,christian world to-day4 ,many ,christians are asking1 ,what is the reason there is so much feebleness in the ,church8 ,we can not ask this question too earnestly1 and ,i trust that ,god ,himself will so impress it upon our hearts that we shall say to ,him1 ,it must be changed4 ,have mercy upon us4 ,but1 ah6 that prayer and that change can not come until we have begun to see that there is a carnal root ruling in believers2 they are living more after the flesh than the ,spirit2 they are yet carnal ,christians4 ,there is a passage from carnal to spiritual4 ,did ,paul find any spiritual believers8 ,undoubtedly he did4 ,just read the #fth chapter of the ,epistle to the ,galatians6 ,that was a church where strife1 and bitterness1 and envy were terrible4 ,but the apostle says in the first verse3 ,brethren1 if a man be overtaken in a fault1 ye which are spiritual restore such an one in the spirit of meekness4 ,there we see that the marks of the spiritual man are that he will be a meek man2 and that he will have power1 and love to help and restore those that are fallen4 ,the carnal man can not do that4 ,if there is a true spiritual life that can be lived1 the great question is3 ,is the way open1 and how can ,i enter into the spiritual state8 ,here1 again1 ,i have four short answers4 ,first1 we must know that there is such a spiritual life to be lived by men on earth4 ,nothing cuts the roots of the ,christian life so much as unbelief4 ,people do not believe what ,god has said about what ,he is willing to do for ,his children4 ,men do not believe that when ,god says1 ,be filled with the ,spirit1 ,he means it for every ,christian4 ,and yet ,paul wrote to the ,ephesians each one3 ,be filled with the ,spirit1 and do not be drunk with wine4 ,just as little as you may be drunk with wine1 so little may you live without being filled with the ,spirit4 ,now1 if ,god means that for believers1 the first thing that we need is to study1 and to take home ,god's ,word1 to our belief until our hearts are filled with the assurance that there is such a life possible which it is our duty to live2 that we can be spiritual men4 ,god's ,word teaches us that ,god does not expect a man to live as he ought for one minute unless the ,holy ,spirit is in him to enable him to do it4 ,we do not want the ,holy ,spirit only when we go to preach1 or when we have some special temptation of the devil to meet1 or some great burden to bear2 ,god says3 ,my child can not live a right life unless he is guided by my ,spirit every minute4 ,that is the mark of the child of ,god3 ,as many as are led by the ,spirit of ,god1 they are the sons of ,god4 ,in ,romans ,v4 we read3 ,the love of ,god is shed abroad in our hearts by the ,holy ,spirit given unto us4 ,that is to be the common1 every-day experience of the believer1 not his life at set times only4 ,did ever a father or mother think1 ,for to-day ,i want my child to love me8 ,no1 they expect the love every day4 ,and so ,god wants ,his child every moment to have a heart filled with love of the ,spirit4 ,in the eyes of ,god1 it is most unnatural to expect a man to love as he should if he is not filled with the ,spirit4 ,oh1 let us believe a man can be a spiritual man4 ,thank ,god1 there is now the blessing waiting us4 ,be filled with the ,spirit4 ,be led by the ,spirit4 ,there is the blessing4 ,if you have to say1 ,oh1 ,god1 ,i have not this blessing1 say it2 but say also1 ,lord1 ,i know it is my duty1 my solemn obligation to have it1 for without it ,i can not live in perfect peace with ,thee all the day2 without it ,i can not glorify ,thee1 and do the work ,thou wouldst have me do4 ,this is our first step from carnal to spiritual1--to recognize a spiritual life1 a walk in the ,spirit1 is within our reach4 ,how can we ask ,god to guide us into spiritual life1 if we have not a clear1 confident conviction that there is such a life to be had8 ,then comes the second step2 a man must see the shame and guilt of his having lived such a life4 ,some people admit there is a spiritual life to live1 and that they have not lived it1 and they are sorry for themselves1 and pity themselves1 and think1 ,how sad that ,i am too feeble for it6 ,how sad that ,god gives it to others1 but has not given it to me6 ,they have great compassion upon themselves1 instead of saying1 ,alas6 it has been our unfaithfulness1 our unbelief1 our disobedience1 that has kept us from giving ourselves utterly to ,god4 ,we have to blush and to be ashamed before ,god that we do not live as spiritual men4 ,a man does not get converted without having conviction of sin4 ,when that conviction of sin comes1 and his eyes are opened1 he learns to be afraid of his sin1 and to flee from it to ,christ1 and to accept ,christ as a mighty deliverer4 ,but a man needs a second conviction of sin2 a believer must be convicted of his peculiar sin4 ,the sins of an unconverted man are different from the sins of a believer4 ,an unconverted man1 for instance1 is not ordinarily convicted of the corruption of his nature2 he thinks principally about external sins1--,i have sworn1 been a liar1 and ,i am on the way to hell4 ,he is then convicted for conversion4 ,but the believer is in quite a different condition4 ,his sins are far more blamable1 for he has had the light and the love and the ,spirit of ,god given to him4 ,his sins are far deeper4 ,he has striven to conquer them and he has grown to see that his nature is utterly corrupt1 that the carnal mind1 the flesh1 within him1 is making his whole state utterly wretched4 ,when a believer is thus convicted by the ,holy ,spirit1 it is specially his life of unbelief that condemns him1 because he sees that the great guilt connected with this has kept him from receiving the full gift of ,god's ,holy ,spirit4 ,he is brought down in shame and confusion of face1 and he begins to cry3 ,woe is me1 for ,i am undone4 ,i have heard of ,god by the hearing of the ear2 ,i have known a great deal of ,him and preached about ,him1 but now mine eye seeth ,him4 ,god comes near him4 ,job1 the righteous man1 whom ,god trusted1 saw in himself the deep sin of self and its righteousness that he had never seen before4 ,until this conviction of the wrongness of our carnal state as believers comes to each one of us2 until we are willing to get this conviction from ,god1 to take time before ,god to be humbled and convicted1 we never can become spiritual men4 ,then comes the third mark1 which is that out of the carnal state into the spiritual is only one step4 ,one step2 oh1 that is a blessed message ,i bring to you--it is only one step4 ,i know many people will refuse to admit that it is only one step2 they think it too little for such a mighty change4 ,but was not conversion only one step8 ,so it is when a man passes from carnal to spiritual4 ,you ask if when ,i talk of a spiritual man ,i am not thinking of a man of spiritual maturity1 a real saint1 and you say3 ,does that come in one day8 ,is there no growth in holiness8 ,i reply that spiritual maturity cannot come in a day4 ,we can not expect it4 ,it takes growth1 until the whole beauty of the image of ,christ is formed in a man4 ,but still ,i say that it needs but one step for a man to get out of the carnal life into the spiritual life4 ,it is when a man utterly breaks with the flesh2 when he gives up the flesh into the crucifixion death of ,christ2 when he sees that everything about it is accursed and that he can not deliver himself from it2 and then claims the slaying power of ,christ's cross within him1--it is when a man does this and says3 ,this spiritual life prepared for me is the free gift of my ,god in ,christ ,jesus1 that he understands how one step can bring him out of the carnal into the spiritual state4 ,in that spiritual life there will be much still to be learned4 ,there will still be imperfections4 ,spiritual life is not perfect2 but the predominant characteristic will be spiritual4 ,when a man has given himself up to the real1 living1 acting1 ruling power of ,god's ,spirit1 he has got into the right position in which he can grow4 ,you never think of growing out of sickness into health2 you may grow out of feebleness into strength1 as the little babe can grow to be a strong man2 but where there is disease1 there must healing come if there is to be a cure effected4 ,there are ,christians who think that they must grow out of the carnal state into the spiritual state4 ,you never can4 ,what could help those carnal ,corinthians8 ,to give them milk could not help them1 for milk was a proof they were in the wrong state4 ,to give them meat would not help them1 for they were unfit to eat it4 ,what they needed was the knife of the surgeon4 ,paul says that the carnal life must be cut out4 ,they that are ,christ's have crucified the flesh4 ,when a man understands what that means1 and accepts it in the faith of what ,christ can do1 then one step can bring him from carnal to spiritual4 ,one simple act of faith in the power of ,christ's death1 one act of surrender to the fellowship of ,christ's death as the ,holy ,spirit can make it ours1 will make it ours1 will bring deliverance from the power of your efforts4 ,what brought deliverance to that poor condemned sinner who was most dark and wretched in his unconverted state8 ,he felt he could do nothing good of himself4 ,what did he do8 ,he saw set before him the almighty ,saviour and he cast himself into ,his arms2 he trusted himself to that omnipotent love and cried1 ,lord1 have mercy upon me4 ,that was salvation4 ,it was not for what he did that ,christ accepted him4 ,oh1 believers1 if any of us who are conscious that the carnal state predominates have to say3 ,it marks me2 ,i am a religious man1 an earnest man1 a friend of missions2 ,i work for ,christ in my church1 but1 alas6 temper and sin and worldliness have still the mastery over my soul1 hear the word of ,god4 ,if any will come and say3 ,i have struggled1 ,i have prayed1 ,i have wept1 and it has not helped me1 then you must do one other thing4 ,you must see that the living ,christ is ,god's provision for your holy1 spiritual life4 ,you must believe that that ,christ who accepted you once1 at conversion1 in ,his wonderful love is now waiting to say to you that you may become a spiritual man1 entirely given up to ,god4 ,if you will believe that1 your fear will vanish and you will say3 ,it can be done2 if ,christ will accept and take charge1 it shall be done4 ,then1 my last mark4 ,a man must take that step1 a solemn but blessed step4 ,it cost some of you five or ten years before you took the step of conversion4 ,you wept and prayed for years1 and could not find peace until you took that step4 ,so1 in the spiritual life1 you may go to teacher after teacher1 and say1 ,tell me about the spiritual life1 the baptism of the ,spirit1 and holiness1 and yet you may remain just where you were4 ,many of us would love to have sin taken away4 ,who loves to have a hasty temper8 ,who loves to have a proud disposition8 ,who loves to have a worldly heart8 ,no one4 ,we go to ,christ to take it away1 and he does not do it2 and we ask1 ,why will he not do it8 ,i have prayed very earnestly4 ,it is because you wanted ,him to take away the ugly fruits while the poisonous root was to stay in you4 ,you did not ask ,him that the flesh should be nailed to ,his cross1 and that you should henceforth give up self entirely to the power of ,his ,spirit4 ,there is deliverance1 but not in the way we seek it4 ,suppose a painter had a piece of canvas1 on which he desired to work out some beautiful picture4 ,suppose that piece of canvas does not belong to him1 and any one has a right to take it and to use it for any other purpose2 do you think the painter would bestow much work on that8 ,no4 ,yet people want ,jesus ,christ to bestow ,his trouble upon them in taking away this temper1 or that other sin1 though in their hearts they have not yielded themselves utterly to ,his command and ,his keeping4 ,it can not be4 ,but if you will come and give your whole life into ,his charge1 ,christ ,jesus is mighty to save2 ,christ ,jesus waits to be gracious2 ,christ ,jesus waits to fill you with ,his ,spirit4 ,will you not take the step8 ,god grant that we may be led by ,his ,spirit to a yielding up of ourselves to ,him as never before4 ,will you not come in humble confession that1 alas6 the carnal life has predominated too much1 has altogether marked you1 and that you have a bitter consciousness that with all the blessing ,god has bestowed1 ,he has not made you what you want to be--a spiritual man8 ,it is the ,holy ,spirit alone who by ,his indwelling can make a spiritual man4 ,come then and cast yourself at ,god's feet1 with this one thought1 ,lord1 ,i give myself an empty vessel to be filled with ,thy ,spirit4 ,each one of you sees every day at the tea table an empty cup set there1 waiting to be filled with tea when the proper time comes4 ,so with every dish1 every plate4 ,they are cleansed and empty1 ready to be filled4 ,emptied and cleansed4 ,oh1 come6 and just as a vessel is set apart to receive what it is to contain1 say to ,christ that you desire from this hour to be a vessel set apart to be filled with ,his ,spirit1 given up to be a spiritual man4 ,bow down in the deepest emptiness of soul1 and say1 ,oh1 ,god1 ,i have nothing6 and then surely as you place yourself before ,him you have a right to say1 ,my ,god will fulfill ,his promise6 ,i claim from ,him the filling of the ,holy ,spirit to make me1 instead of a carnal1 a spiritual ,christian4 ,if you place yourself at ,his feet1 and tarry there2 if you abide in that humble surrender and that childlike trust1 as sure as ,god lives the blessing will come4 ,oh1 have we not to bow in shame before ,god1 as we think of ,his whole ,church and see so much of the carnal prevailing8 ,have we not to bow in shame before ,god1 as we think of so much of the carnal in our hearts and lives8 ,then let us bow in great faith in ,god's mercy4 ,deliverance is nigh1 deliverance is coming1 deliverance is waiting1 deliverance is sure4 ,let us trust2 ,god will give it4 ,,the ,,self ,,life4 ,,ii4 ,matt4 #af3 #bd4--;,if any man will come after me1 let him deny himself1 and take up his cross1 and follow me4 ,in the #acth verse we read that ,jesus at ,caesarea ,philippi asked ,his disciples1 ,whom do men say that ,i1 the ,son of ,man1 am8 ,when they had answered1 ,he asked them1 ,but whom say ye that ,i am8 ,and in verse #af ,peter answered and said1 ,thou art the ,christ1 the ,son of the ,living ,god4 ,jesus answered and said unto him3 ,blessed art thou1 ,simon ,barjonas1 for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee1 but my ,father which is in ,heaven4 ,and ,i say also unto thee that thou art ,peter1 and upon this rock ,i will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it4 ,then in verse #ba we read how ,jesus began to tell ,his disciples of ,his approaching death2 and in verse #bb how ,peter began to rebuke ,him1 saying1 ,be it far from ,thee1 ,lord2 this shall not be unto ,thee4 ,but ,jesus turned and said unto ,peter1 ,get thee behind me1 ,satan2 thou art an offense unto me1 for thou savorest not the things that be of ,god1 but those that be of men4 ,then said ,jesus unto ,his disciples1 ,if any man will come after me1 let him deny himself1 and take up his cross and follow me4 ,we often hear about the compromise life and the question comes up ,what lies at the root of it8 ,what is the reason that so many ,christians are wasting their lives in the terrible bondage of the world instead of living in the manifestation and the privilege and the glory of the child of ,god8 ,and another question perhaps comes to us3 ,what can be the reason that when we see a thing is wrong and strive against it we cannot conquer it8 ,what can be the reason that we have a hundred times prayed and vowed1 yet here we are still living a mingled1 divided1 half-hearted life8 ,to those two questions there is one answer3 it is self that is the root of the whole trouble4 ,and therefore1 if any one asks me1 ,how can ,i get rid of this compromise life8 the answer would not be1 ,you must do this1 or that1 or the other thing1 but the answer would be1 ,a new life from above1 the life of ,christ1 must take the place of the self-life2 then alone can we be conquerors4 ,we always go from the outward to the inward2 let us do so here2 let us consider from these words of the text the one word1 self4 ,jesus said to ,peter3 ,if any man will come after me let him deny himself1 his own self1 and take up the cross and follow me4 ,that is a mark of the disciple2 that is the secret of the ,christian life--deny self and all will come right4 ,note that ,peter was a believer1 and a believer who had been taught by the ,holy ,spirit4 ,he had given an answer that pleased ,christ wonderfully3 ,thou art the ,christ1 the ,son of the living ,god4 ,do not think that that was nothing extraordinary4 ,we learn it in our catechisms2 ,peter did not2 and ,christ saw that the ,holy ,spirit of the ,father had been teaching him and ,he said3 ,blessed art thou1 ,simon ,barjonas4 ,but note how strong the carnal man still is in ,peter4 ,christ speaks of ,his cross2 ,he could understand about the glory1 ,thou art the ,son of ,god2 but about the cross and the death he could not understand1 and he ventured in his self-confidence to say1 ,lord1 that shall never be2 ,thou canst not be crucified and die4 ,and ,christ had to rebuke him3 ,get thee behind me1 ,satan4 ,thou savorest not the things that be of ,god4 ,you are talking like a mere carnal man1 and not as the ,spirit of ,god would teach you4 ,then ,christ went on to say1 ,remember1 it is not only ,i who am to be crucified1 but you2 it is not only ,i who am to die1 but you also4 ,if a man would be my disciple1 he must deny self1 and he must take up his cross and follow me4 ,let us dwell upon this one word1 self4 ,it is only as we learn to know what self is that we really know what is at the root of all our failure1 and are prepared to go to ,christ for deliverance4 ,let us consider1 first of all1 the nature of this self life1 then denote some of its works and then ask the question3 ,how may we be delivered from it8 ,self is the power with which ,god has created and endowed every intelligent creature4 ,self is the very center of a created being4 ,and why did ,god give the angels or man a self8 ,the object of this self was that we might bring it as an empty vessel unto ,god2 that ,he might put into it ,his life4 ,god gave me the power of self-determination1 that ,i might bring this self every day and say3 ,oh1 ,god1 work in it2 ,i offer it to thee4 ,god wanted a vessel into which ,he might pour out ,his divine fullness of beauty1 wisdom and power2 and so ,he created the world1 the sun1 and the moon1 and the stars1 the trees1 and the flowers1 and the grass1 which all show forth the riches of ,his wisdom1 and beauty1 and goodness4 ,but they do it without knowing what they do4 ,then ,god created the angels with a self and a will1 to see whether they would come and voluntarily yield themselves to ,him as vessels for ,him to fill4 ,but alas6 they did not all do that4 ,there was one at the head of a great company1 and he began to look upon himself1 and to think of the wonderful powers with which ,god had endowed him1 and to delight in himself4 ,he began to think3 ,must such a being as ,i always remain dependent on ,god8 ,he exalted himself1 pride asserted itself in separation from ,god1 and that very moment he became1 instead of an angel in ,heaven1 a devil in hell4 ,self turned to ,god is the glory of allowing the ,creator to reveal ,himself in us4 ,self turned away from ,god is the very darkness and fire of hell4 ,we all know the terrible story of what took place further2 ,god created man1 and ,satan came in the form of a serpent and tempted ,eve with the thought of becoming as ,god1 having an independent self1 knowing good and evil4 ,and while he spoke with her1 he breathed into her1 in those words1 the very poison and the very pride of hell4 ,his own evil spirit1 the very poison of hell1 entered humanity1 and it is this cursed self that we have inherited from our first parents4 ,it was that self that ruined and brought destruction upon this world1 and all that there has been of sin1 and of darkness1 and of wretchedness1 and of misery2 and all that there will be throughout the countless ages of eternity in hell1 will be nothing but the reign of self1 the curse of self1 separating man and turning him away from his ,god4 ,and if we are to understand fully what ,christ is to do for us1 and are to become partakers of a full salvation1 we must learn to know1 and to hate1 and to give up entirely this cursed self4 ,now what are the works of self8 ,i might mention many1 but let us take the simplest words that we are continually using1--self-will1 self-confidence1 self-exaltation4 ,self-will1 pleasing self1 is the great sin of man1 and it is at the root of all that compromising with the world which is the ruin of so many4 ,men can not understand why they should not please themselves and do their own will4 ,numbers of ,christians have never gotten hold of the idea that a ,christian is a man who is never to seek his own will1 but is always to seek the will of ,god1 as a man in whom the very spirit of ,christ lives4 ,lo1 ,i come to do ,thy will1 oh1 my ,god6 ,we find ,christians pleasing themselves in a thousand ways1 and yet trying to be happy1 and good1 and useful2 and they do not know that at the root of it all is self-will robbing them of the blessing4 ,christ said to ,peter1 ,peter1 deny yourself4 ,but instead of doing that1 ,peter said1 ,i will deny my ,lord and not myself4 ,he never said it in words1 but ,christ said to him in the last night1 ,thou shalt deny ,me1 and he did it4 ,what was the cause of this8 ,self-pleasing4 ,he became afraid when the woman servant charged him with belonging to ,jesus1 and three times said1 ,i know not this man1 ,i have nothing to do with ,him4 ,he denied ,christ4 ,just think of it6 ,no wonder ,peter wept those bitter tears4 ,it was a choice between self1 that ugly1 cursed self1 and that beautiful1 blessed ,son of ,god2 and ,peter chose self4 ,no wonder that he thought3 ,instead of denying myself1 ,i have denied ,jesus2 what a choice ,i have made6 ,no wonder that he wept bitterly4 ,christians1 look at your own lives in the light of the words of ,jesus4 ,do you find there self-will1 self-pleasing8 ,remember this3 every time you please yourself1 you deny ,jesus4 ,it is one of the two4 ,you must please ,him only1 and deny self1 or you must please yourself and deny ,him4 ,then follows self-confidence1 self-trust1 self-effort1 self-dependence4 ,what was it that led ,peter to deny ,jesus8 ,christ had warned him2 why did he not take warning8 ,self-confidence4 ,he was so sure3 ,lord1 ,i love ,thee4 ,for three years ,i have followed ,thee4 ,lord1 ,i deny that it ever can be4 ,i am ready to go to prison and to death4 ,it was simply self-confidence4 ,people have often asked me1 ,what is the reason ,i fail8 ,i desire so earnestly1 and pray so fervently1 to live in ,god's will4 ,and my answer generally is1 ,simply because you trust yourself4 ,they answer me3 ,no1 ,i do not2 ,i know ,i am not good2 and ,i know that ,god is willing to keep me1 and ,i put my trust in ,jesus4 ,but ,i reply1 ,no1 my brother2 no2 if you trusted ,god and ,jesus1 you could not fall1 but you trust yourself4 ,do let us believe that the cause of every failure in the ,christian life is nothing but this4 ,i trust this cursed self1 instead of trusting ,jesus4 ,i trust my own strength1 instead of the almighty strength of ,god4 ,and that is why ,christ says1 ,this self must be denied4 ,then there is self-exaltation1 another form of the works of self4 ,ah1 how much pride and jealousy is there in the ,christian world2 how much sensitiveness to what men say of us or think of us2 how much desire of human praise and pleasing men1 instead of always living in the presence of ,god1 with the one thought3 ,am ,i pleasing to ,him8 ,christ said1 ,how can ye believe who receive honor one of another8 ,receiving honor of one another renders a life of faith absolutely impossible4 ,this self started from hell1 it separated us from ,god1 it is a cursed deceiver that leads us astray from ,jesus4 ,now comes the third point4 ,what are we to do to get rid of it8 ,jesus answers us in the words of our text3 ,if any man will come after me1 let him take up his cross and follow me4 ,note it well4--,i must deny myself and take ,jesus himself as my life1--,i must choose4 ,there are two lives1 the self life and the ,christ life2 ,i must choose one of the two4 ,follow me1 says our ,lord1 make me the law of your existence1 the rule of your conduct2 give me your whole heart2 follow me1 and ,i will care for all4 ,oh1 friends1 it is a solemn exchange to have set before us2 to come and1 seeing the danger of this self1 with its pride and its wickedness1 to cast ourselves before the ,son of ,god1 and to say1 ,i deny my own life1 ,i take ,thy life to be mine4 ,the reason why ,christians pray and pray for the ,christ life to come in to them1 without result1 is that the self life is not denied4 ,you ask1 ,how can ,i get rid of this self life8 ,you know the parable3 the strong man kept his house until one stronger than he came in and cast him out4 ,then the place was garnished and swept1 but empty1 and he came back with seven other spirits worse than himself4 ,it is only ,christ ,himself coming in that can cast out self1 and keep out self4 ,this self will abide with us to the very end4 ,remember the ,apostle ,paul2 he had seen the ,heavenly vision1 and lest he should exalt himself1 the thorn in the flesh was sent to humble him4 ,there was a tendency to exalt himself1 which was natural1 and it would have conquered1 but ,christ delivered him from it by ,his faithful care for ,his loving servant4 ,jesus ,christ is able1 by ,his divine grace1 to prevent the power of self from ever asserting itself or gaining the upper hand2 ,jesus ,christ is willing to become the life of the soul2 ,jesus ,christ is willing to teach us so to follow ,him1 and to have heart and life set upon ,him alone1 that ,he shall ever and always be the light of our souls4 ,then we come to what the apostle ,paul says2 ,not ,i1 but ,christ liveth in me4 ,the two truths go together4 ,first ,not ,i1 then1 but ,christ liveth in me4 ,look at ,peter again4 ,christ said to him1 ,deny yourself1 and follow me4 ,whither had he to follow8 ,jesus led him1 even though he failed2 and where did he lead him8 ,he led him on to ,gethsemane1 and there ,peter failed1 for he slept when he ought to have been awake1 watching and praying2 ,he led him on towards ,calvary1 to the place where ,peter denied ,him4 ,was that ,christ's leading8 ,praise ,god1 it was4 ,the ,holy ,spirit had not yet come in ,his power2 ,peter was yet a carnal man2 the ,spirit willing1 but not able to conquer2 the flesh weak4 ,what did ,christ do8 ,he led ,peter on until he was broken down in utter self-abasement1 and humbled in the depths of sorrow4 ,jesus led him on1 past the grave1 through the ,resurrection1 up to ,pentecost1 and the ,holy ,spirit came1 and in the ,holy ,spirit ,christ with ,his divine life came1 and then it was1 ,christ liveth in me4 ,there is but one way of being delivered from this life of self4 ,we must follow ,christ1 set our hearts upon ,him1 listen to ,his teachings1 give ourselves up every day1 that ,he may be all to us1 and by the power of ,christ the denial of self will be a blessed1 unceasing reality4 ,never for one hour do ,i expect the ,christian to reach a stage at which he can say1 ,i have no self to deny2 never for one moment in which he can say1 ,i do not need to deny self4 ,no1 this fellowship with the cross of ,christ will be an unceasing denial of self every hour and every moment by the grace of ,god4 ,there is no place where there is full deliverance from the power of this sinful self4 ,we are to be crucified with ,christ ,jesus4 ,we are to live with ,him as those who have never been baptized into ,his death4 ,think of that6 ,christ had no sinful self1 but ,he had a self and that self ,he actually gave up unto death4 ,in ,gethsemane ,he said1 ,father1 not ,my will4 ,that unsinning self ,he gave up unto death that ,he might receive it again out of the grave from ,god1 raised up and glorified4 ,can we expect to go to ,heaven in any other way than ,he went8 ,beware6 remember that ,christ descended into death and the grave1 and it is in the death of self1 following ,jesus to the uttermost1 that the deliverance and the life will come4 ,and now1 what is the use that we are to make of this lesson of the ,master8 ,the first lesson will be that we should take time1 and that we should humble ourselves before ,god1 at the thought of what this self is in us2 put down to the account of the self every sin1 every shortcoming1 all failure1 and all that has been dishonoring to ,god1 and then say1 ,lord1 this is what ,i am2 and then let us allow the blessed ,jesus ,christ to take entire control of our life1 in the faith that ,his life can be ours4 ,do not think it is an easy thing to get rid of self4 ,at a consecration meeting1 it is easy to make a vow1 and to offer a prayer1 and to perform an act of surrender1 but as solemn as the death of ,christ was on ,calvary--,his giving up of ,his unsinning self life to ,god1--just as solemn must it be between us and our ,god--the giving up of self to death4 ,the power of the death of ,christ must come to work in us every day4 ,oh1 think what a contrast between that self-willed ,peter1 and ,jesus giving up ,his will to ,god6 ,what a contrast between that self-exaltation of ,peter1 and the deep humility of the ,lamb of ,god1 meek and lowly in heart before ,god and man6 ,what a contrast between that self-confidence of ,peter1 and that deep dependence of ,jesus upon the ,father1 when ,he said3 ,i can do nothing of myself4 ,we are called upon to live the life of ,christ1 and ,christ comes to live ,his life in us2 but one thing must first take place2 we must learn to hate this self1 and to deny it4 ,as ,peter said1 when he denied ,christ1 ,i have nothing to do with him1 so we must say1 ,i have nothing to do with self1 that ,christ ,jesus may be all in all4 ,let us humble ourselves at the thought of what this self has done to us and how it has dishonored ,jesus2 and let us pray very fervently3 ,lord1 by ,thy light discover this self2 we beseech ,thee to discover it to us4 ,open our eyes1 that we may see what it has done1 and that it is the only hindrance that has been keeping us back4 ,let us pray that fervently1 and then let us wait upon ,god until we get away from all our religious exercises1 and from all our religious experience1 and from all our blessings1 until we get close to ,god1 with this one prayer3 ,lord ,god1 self changed an archangel into a devil1 and self ruined my first parents1 and brought them out of ,paradise into darkness and misery1 and self has been the ruin of my life and the cause of every failure2 oh1 discover it to me4 ,and then comes the blessed exchange1 that a man is made willing and able to say3 ,another will live the life for me1 another will live with me1 another will do all for me1 ,nothing else will do4 ,deny self2 take up the cross1 to die with ,jesus2 follow ,him only4 ,may ,he give us the grace to understand1 and to receive1 and to live the ,christ life4 ,,waiting ,,on ,,god ,,iii4 ,psalms #fb3 #e4--,my soul1 wait thou only upon ,god1 for my expectation is from ,him4 ,the solemn question comes to us1 ,is the ,god ,i have1 a ,god that is to me above all circumstances1 nearer to me than any circumstance can be8 ,brother1 have you learned to live your life having ,god so really with you every moment1 that in circumstances the most difficult ,he is always more present and nearer than anything around you8 ,all our knowledge of ,god's ,word will help us very little1 unless that comes to be the question to which we get an answer4 ,what can be the reason that so many of ,god's beloved children complain continually3 ,my circumstances separate me from ,god2 my trials1 my temptations1 my character1 my temper1 my friends1 my enemies1 anything can come between my ,god and me8 ,is ,god not able so to take possession that ,he can be nearer to me than anything in the world8 ,must riches or poverty1 joy or sorrow1 have a power over me that my ,god has not8 ,no4 ,but why1 then1 do ,god's children so often complain that their circumstances separate them from ,him8 ,there can be but one answer1 ,they do not know their ,god4 ,if there is trouble or feebleness in the ,church of ,god1 it is because of this4 ,we do not know the ,god we have4 ,that is why in addition to the promise1 ,i will be thy ,god1 the promise is so often added1 ,and ye shall know that ,i am your ,god4 ,if ,i know that1 not through man's teaching1 not with my mind or my imagination2 but if ,i know that1 in the living evidence which ,god gives in my heart1 then ,i know that the divine presence of my ,god will be so wonderful1 and my ,god ,himself will be so beautiful1 and so near1 that ,i can live all my days and years a conqueror through ,him that loved me4 ,is not that the life which we need8 ,the question comes again3 ,why is it that ,god's people do not know their ,god8 ,and the answer is3 ,they take anything rather than ,god1--ministers1 and preaching1 and books1 and prayers1 and work1 and efforts1 any exertion of human nature1 instead of waiting1 and waiting long if need be1 until ,god reveals ,himself4 ,no teaching that we may get1 and no effort that we may put forth1 can put us in possession of this blessed light of ,god1 all in all to our souls4 ,but still it is attainable1 it is within reach1 if ,god will reveal ,himself4 ,that is the one necessity4 ,i would to ,god that every one would ask his heart whether he has said1 and is saying every day3 ,i want more of ,god4 ,do not speak to me only of the beautiful truth there is in the ,bible4 ,that can not satisfy me4 ,i want ,god4 ,in our inner ,christian life1 in our every-day prayers1 in our ,christian living1 in our churches1 in our prayer-meetings1 in our fellowship1 it must come to that--that ,god always has the first place2 and if that be given ,him1 ,he will take possession4 ,oh1 if in our lives as individuals every eye were set upon ,god1 upon the living ,god1 every heart were crying1 ,my soul thirsteth for ,god1 what power1 what blessing and what presence of the everlasting ,god would be revealed to us6 ,let me use an illustration4 ,when a man is giving an illustrated lecture he often uses a long pointer to indicate places on a map or chart4 ,do the people look at that pointer8 ,no1 that only helps to show them the place on the map1 and they do not think of it1--it might be of fine gold2 but the pointer can not satisfy them4 ,they want to see what the pointer points at4 ,and this ,bible is nothing but a pointer1 pointing to ,god2 and1--may ,i say it with reverence--,jesus ,christ came to point us1 to show us the way1 to bring us to ,god4 ,i am afraid there are many people who love ,christ and who trust in ,him1 but who fail of the one great object of ,his work2 they have never learned to understand what the ,scripture saith3 ,he died1 that ,he might bring us unto ,god4 ,there is a difference between the way and the end which ,i am aiming at4 ,i might be traveling amid most beautiful scenery1 in the most delightful company2 but if ,i have a home to which ,i want to go1 all the scenery1 and all the company1 and all the beauty and happiness around me can not satisfy me2 ,i want to reach the end2 ,i want my home4 ,and ,god is meant to be the home of our souls4 ,christ came into the world to bring us back to ,god1 and unless we take ,christ for what ,god intended we should1 our religion will always be a divided one4 ,what do we read in ,hebrews vii8 ,he is able to save to the uttermost4--,whom8 ,them that come to ,god by ,him2 not them that only come to ,christ4 ,in ,christ--bless ,his name--we have the graciousness1 the condescension1 and the tenderness of ,god4 ,but we are in danger of standing there1 and being content with that1 and ,christ wants to bring us back to rejoice as much as in the glory of ,god ,himself1 in ,his righteousness1 ,his holiness1 ,his authority1 ,his presence and ,his power4 ,he can save completely those who come to ,god through ,him6 ,now1 just a very few thoughts on the way by which ,i can come to know ,god as this ,god above all circumstances1 filling my heart and life every day4 ,the one thing needful is3 ,i must wait upon ,god4 ,the original is1--it is in our ,dutch version1 and it is in the margin1 too1--,my soul is silent into ,god4 ,what ought to be the silence of the soul unto ,god8 ,a soul conscious of its littleness1 its ignorance1 its prejudices and its dangers from passion1 from all that is human and sinful1--a soul conscious of that1 and saying1 ,i want the everlasting ,god to come in and to take hold of me and to take such hold of me that ,i may be kept in the hollow of ,his hand for my life long2 ,i want ,him to take such possession of me that every moment ,he may work all in all in me4 ,that is what is implied in the very nature of our ,god4 ,how we ought to be silent unto ,him1 and wait upon ,him6 ,may ,i ask1 with reverence3 ,what is ,god for8 ,a ,god is for this3 to be the light and the life of creation1 the source and power of all existence4 ,the beautiful trees1 the green grass1 the bright sun1 ,god created that they might show forth ,his beauty1 ,his wisdom and ,his glory4 ,the tree of one hundred years old--when it was planted ,god did not give it a stock of life by which to carry on its existence4 ,nay1 verily1 ,god clothes the lilies every year afresh with their beauty2 every year ,god clothes the tree with its foliage and its fruit4 ,every day and every hour it is ,god who maintains the life of all nature4 ,and ,god created us1 that we might be the empty vessels in which ,he could work out ,his beauty1 ,his will1 ,his love1 and the likeness of ,his blessed ,son4 ,that is what ,god is for1 to work in us by ,his mighty operation1 without one moment's ceasing4 ,when ,i begin to get hold of that1 ,i no longer think of the true ,christian life as a high impossibility1 and an unnatural thing1 but ,i say1 ,it is the most natural thing in creation that ,god should have me every moment1 and that my ,god should be nearer to me than all else4 ,just think1 for a moment1 what folly it is to imagine that ,i can not expect ,god to be with me every moment4 ,just look at the sunshine2 have you ever had any trouble as you were working or as you were studying or reading a book in the light the sun gives8 ,have you ever said1 ,oh1 how can ,i keep that light1 how can ,i hold it fast1 how can ,i be sure that ,i shall continue to have it to use8 ,you never thought that4 ,god has taken care that the sun itself should provide you with light2 and without your care2 the light comes unbidden4 ,and ,i ask you3 ,what think you8 ,has ,god arranged that the light of that sun that will one day be burned up1 can come to you unconsciously and abide in you blessedly and mightily2 and is ,god not willing1 or is ,he not able1 to let ,his light and ,his presence so shine through you that you can walk all the day with ,god nearer to you than anything in nature8 ,praise ,god for the assurance2 ,he can do it4 ,and why does ,he not do it8 ,why so seldom1 and why in such feeble measure8 ,there is but one answer3 you do not let ,him4 ,you are so occupied and filled with other things1 religious things1 preaching and praying1 studying and working1 so occupied with your religion1 that you do not give ,god the time to make ,himself known1 and to enter in and to take possession4 ,oh1 brother1 listen to the word of the man who knew ,god so well1 and begin to say3 ,my soul1 wait thou only upon ,god4 ,i might show that this is the very glory of the ,creator1 the very life ,christ brought into the world1 the life ,he lived1 and the very life ,christ wants to lift us up to in its entire dependence on the ,father4 ,the very secret of the ,christ-life is this3 such a consciousness of ,god's presence that whether it was ,judas1 who came to betray ,him1 or ,caiaphas1 who condemned ,him unjustly1 or ,pilate1 who gave ,him up to be crucified1 the presence of the ,father was upon ,him1 and within ,him1 and around ,him1 and man could not touch ,his spirit4 ,and that is what ,god wants to be to you and to me4 ,does not all your anxious restlessness1 and futile effort1 prove that you have not let ,god do ,his work8 ,god is drawing you to ,himself4 ,this is not your own wish1 and the stirring of your own heart1 but the everlasting ,divine magnet is drawing you4 ,these restless yearnings and thirstings1 remember1 are the work of ,god4 ,come and be still1 and wait upon ,god4 ,he will reveal ,himself4 ,and how am ,i to wait on ,god8 ,in answer ,i would say3 first of all1 in prayer take more time to be still before ,god without saying one word4 ,what is1 in prayer1 the most important thing8 ,that ,i catch the ear of ,him to whom ,i speak4 ,we are not ready to offer our petition until we are fully conscious of having secured the attention of ,god4 ,you tell me you know all that4 ,yes1 you know it2 but you need to have your heart filled by the ,holy ,spirit with the holy consciousness that the everlasting1 almighty ,god is indeed come very near you4 ,the loving one is longing to have you for ,his own4 ,be still before ,god1 and wait1 and say3 ,oh1 ,god1 take possession4 ,reveal ,thyself1 not to my thoughts or imaginations1 but by the solemn1 awe-bringing1 soul-subduing consciousness that ,god is shining upon me bring me to the place of dependence and humility4 ,prayer may be indeed waiting upon ,god1 but there is a great deal of prayer that is not waiting upon ,god4 ,waiting on ,god is the first and the best beginning for prayer4 ,when we bow in the humble1 silent acknowledgment of ,god's glory and nearness1 ere we begin to pray there will be the very blessing that we often get only at the end4 ,from the very beginning ,i come face to face with ,god2 ,i am in touch with the everlasting omnipotence of love and ,i know my ,god will bless me4 ,let us never be afraid to be still before ,god2 we shall then carry that stillness into our work2 and when we go to church on ,sunday1 or to the prayer-meeting on week-days1 it will be with the one desire that nothing may stand betwixt us and ,god1 and that we may never be so occupied with hearing and listening as to forget the presence of ,god4 ,oh1 that ,god might make every minister what ,moses was at the foot of ,mount ,sinai2 ,moses led the people out to meet ,god1 and they did meet ,him until they were afraid4 ,let every minister ask with all the earnestness his soul can command1 that ,god may deliver him from the sin of preaching and teaching without making the people feel first of all3 ,the man wants to bring us to ,god ,himself4 ,it can be felt1 not only in the words1 but in the very disposition of the humble1 waiting1 worshiping heart4 ,we must carry this waiting into all our worship2 we will have to make a study of it2 we will have to speak about it2 we will have to help each other1 for the truth has been too much lost in the ,church of ,christ2 we must wait upon ,god about it4 ,then we shall be able to carry it out into our daily life4 ,there are so many ,christians who wonder that they fail2 but think of the ease with which they talk and join in conversation1 spending hours in it1 never thinking that all this may be dissipating the soul's power and leading them to spend hours not in the immediate presence of ,god4 ,i am afraid this is the great difficulty3 that we are not willing to make the needed sacrifice for a life of continual waiting upon ,god4 ,are there not some of us who would feel it an impossibility to spend every moment under the covering of the ,most ,high1 in the secret of ,his pavilion8 ,beloved1 do not think it too high1 or too difficult4 ,it is too difficult for you and me to attain1 but our ,god will give it to us4 ,let us begin even now to wait more earnestly and intensely upon ,god4 ,let us in our homes sometimes bow a little in silence2 let us in our closets wait in silence1 and make a covenant1 it may be1 without words1 that with our whole hearts we will seek ,god's presence to come in upon us4 ,what is religion8 ,just as much as you have of ,god working in you1 that alone is religion4 ,and if you want more religion1 more grace1 more strength and more fruitfulness1 you must have more of ,god4 ,let that be the cry of our hearts1--,more of ,god6 ,more of ,god6 ,more of ,god6 ,and let us say to our souls1 ,my soul1 wait thou upon ,god1 for my expectation is from ,him4 ,,entrance ,,into ,,rest4 ,,iv4 ,hebrews #d3 #a4--,let us therefore fear1 lest1 a promise being left us of entering into ,his rest1 any of you should seem to come short of it4 ,hebrews #d3 #aa4--,let us labor therefore to enter into that rest1 lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief4 ,i want1 in the simplest way possible1 to answer the question3 ,how does a man enter into that rest8 and to point out the simple steps that he takes1 all included in the one act of surrender and faith4 ,and the first step1 ,i think1 is this3 that a man learns to say1 ,i believe1 heartily1 there is rest in a life of faith4 ,israel passed through two stages4 ,this is beautifully expressed in the fifth of ,deuteronomy3 ,he brought us out1 that ,he might bring us in--two parts of ,god's work of redemption--,he brought us out from ,egypt1 that ,he might bring us into ,canaan4 ,and that is applicable to every believer4 ,at your conversion1 ,god brought you out of ,egypt1 and the same almighty ,god is longing to bring you into the ,canaan life4 ,you know how ,god brought the ,israelites out1 but they would not let ,him bring them in and they had to wander for forty years in the wilderness--the type1 alas6 of so many ,christians4 ,god brings them out in conversion1 but they will not let ,him bring them in into all that ,he has prepared for them4 ,to a man who asks me1 ,how can ,i enter into the rest8 ,i say1 first of all1 speak this word1 ,i do believe that there is a rest into which ,jesus1 our ,joshua1 can bring a trusting soul4 ,and if you would know what the difference is between the two lives--the life you have been leading1 and the life you now want to lead1 just look at the wilderness and ,canaan4 ,what are the points of difference8 ,in the wilderness1 wandering for forty years1 backward and forward2 in ,canaan1 perfect rest in the land that ,god gave them4 ,that is the difference between the life of a ,christian who has1 and one who has not entered into ,canaan4 ,in wandering backward and forward2 going after the world1 and coming back and repenting2 led astray by temptation1 and returning only to go off again2--a life of ups and downs4 ,in ,canaan1 on the other hand1 a life of rest1 because the soul has learned to trust3 ,god keeps me every hour in ,his mighty power4 ,there is the second difference3 the life in the wilderness was a life of want2 in ,canaan1 a life of plenty4 ,in the wilderness there was nothing to eat2 there was often no water4 ,god graciously supplied their wants by the manna1 and the water from the rock4 ,but1 alas6 they were not content with this1 and their life was one of want and murmurings4 ,but in ,canaan ,god gave them vineyards that they had not planted1 and the old corn of the land was there waiting for them2 a land flowing with milk and honey2 a land that lived by the rain of ,heaven and had the very care of ,god ,himself4 ,oh1 ,christian1 come and say to-day1 ,i believe there is a possibility of such a change out of that life of spiritual death1 and darkness1 and sadness1 and complaining1 that ,i have often lived1 into the land of supply of every want2 where the grace of ,jesus is proved sufficient every day1 every hour4 ,say to-day3 ,i believe in the possibility that there is such a land of rest for me4 ,and then1 the third difference3 ,in the wilderness there was no victory4 ,when they tried1 after they had sinned at ,kadesh1 to go up against their enemies1 they were defeated4 ,in the land they conquered every enemy2 from ,jericho onward1 they went from victory to victory4 ,and so ,god waits1 and ,christ waits1 and the ,holy ,spirit waits1 to give victory every day2 not freedom from temptation2 no1 not that2 but in union with ,christ a power that can say1 ,i can do all things through ,him that strengtheneth me4 ,we are more than conquerors through ,him that loved us4 ,may ,god help every heart to say that4 ,then comes the second step4 ,i want you to say not only1 ,i believe there is such a life1 but1 second1 ,i have not had it yet4 ,say that4 ,i have never yet got that4 ,some may say1 ,i have sought it2 some may say1 ,i have never heard about it2 some may say1 ,at times ,i thought ,i had found it1 but ,i lost it again4 ,let every one be honest with ,god4 ,and now1 will all who have never yet found it honestly1 begin to say1 ,lord1 up to this time ,i have never had it8 ,and why is it of such consequence to speak thus8 ,because1 dear friends1 some people want to glide into this life of rest gradually2 and just quietly to steal in2 and ,god won't have it4 ,your life in the wilderness has not only been a life of sadness to yourself1 but of sin and dishonor to ,god4 ,every deeper entrance into salvation must always be by the way of conviction and confession2 therefore1 let every ,christian be willing to say3 ,alas6 ,i have not lived that life1 and ,i am guilty2 ,i have dishonored ,god2 ,i have been like ,israel2 ,i have provoked ,him to wrath by my unbelief and disobedience4 ,god have mercy upon me6 ,oh1 let it go up before ,god--the secret confession3 ,i haven't it2 alas6 ,i have not glorified ,god by a life in the land of rest4 ,then comes the third word ,i want you to speak and that is3 ,thank ,god1 that life is for me4 ,some say1 ,i believe there is such a life1 but not for me4 ,there are people who continually say3 ,oh1 my character is so unstable2 my will is naturally very weak2 my temperament is nervous and excitable1 it is impossible for me always to live without worry1 resting in ,god4 ,beloved brother1 do not say that4 ,you say so only for one reason3 ,you do not know what your ,god will do for you4 ,do begin to look away from self1 and to look up to ,god1 ,take that precious word3 ,he brought them out that he might bring them in4 ,the ,god who took them through the ,red ,sea was the ,god who took them through ,jordan into ,canaan4 ,the ,god who converted you is the ,god who is able to give you every day this blessed life4 ,oh1 begin to say1 with the beginnings of a feeble faith1 even before you claim it1 begin even intellectually to say3 ,it is for me2 ,i do believe that4 ,god does not disinherit any of ,his children4 ,what ,he gives is for every one4 ,i believe that blessed life is waiting for me4 ,it is meant for me4 ,god is waiting to bestow it1 and to work it in me4 ,glory be to ,his blessed name6 ,my soul says it is for me1 too4 ,oh1 take that little word me1 and looking up in the very face of ,god dare to say3 ,this inestimable treasure--it is for me1 the weakest and the unworthiest2 it is for me4 ,have you said that8 ,say it now3 ,this life is possible to me1 too4 ,and then comes the next step1 and that is3 ,i can never1 by any effort of mine1 grasp it2 it is ,god must bestow it on me4 ,i want you to be very bold in saying1 ,it is for me4 ,but then ,i want you to fall down very low and say1 ,i can not seize it2 ,i can not take it to myself4 ,and how can you then get it8 ,praise ,god1 if once ,he has brought you down in the consciousness of utter helplessness and self-despair1 then comes the time that ,he can draw nigh and ask you1 ,will you trust your ,god to work this in you8 ,dearly beloved ,christians1 say in your heart3 ,i never1 by any effort1 can take hold of ,god1 or seize this for myself2 it is ,god must give it4 ,cherish this blessed impotence4 ,it is ,he who brought us out1 who ,himself must bring us in4 ,it is your greatest happiness to be impotent4 ,pray ,god by the ,holy ,spirit to reveal to you this true impotence1 and that will open the way for your faith to say1 ,lord1 ,thou must do it1 or it will never be done4 ,god will do it4 ,people wonder1 when they hear so many sermons about faith1 and such earnest pleading to believe1 and ask why it is they can not believe4 ,there is just one answer3 ,it is self4 ,self is working2 is trying2 is struggling1 and self must fail4 ,but when you come to the end of self and can only cry1 ,lord1 help me6 ,lord1 help me6--then the deliverance is nigh2 believe that4 ,it was ,god brought the people in4 ,it is ,god who will bring you in4 ,one should be willing1 for the sake of this rest1 to give up everything4 ,the grace of ,god is very free4 ,it is given without money and without price4 ,and yet1 on the other hand1 ,jesus said that every man who wants the pearl of great price must sacrifice his all1 must sell all that he has to buy that pearl4 ,it is not enough to see the beauty1 the attractiveness and the glory1 and almost to taste the gladness and the joy of this wonderful life as it has been set before you4 ,you must become the possessor1 the owner of the field4 ,the man who found the field with a treasure1 and the man who found the great pearl1 were both glad2 but they had not yet got it4 ,they had found it1 seen it1 desired it1 rejoiced in it2 but they had not yet got it4 ,not until they went and sold all1 gave up everything1 and bought the ground1 and bought the pearl4 ,ah1 friends1 there is a great deal that has to be given up3 the world1 its pleasures1 its favor1 its good opinion4 ,you are to stand to the world in the same relation as ,jesus did4 ,the world rejected ,him1 and cast ,him out1 and you are to take up the position of your ,lord1 to whom you belong1 and to follow with the rejected ,christ4 ,you have to give up everything4 ,you have to give up all that is good in yourself and to be humbled in the dust of death4 ,and that is not all4 ,your past religious life and experience and successes--you have to give all up and become nothing1 that ,god alone may have the glory4 ,god has brought you out in conversion2 it was ,god's own life given you3 but you defiled it with disobedience and with unbelief4 ,give it all up4 ,give up all your own wisdom1 and your own thoughts about ,god's work4 ,how hard it is for the minister of the ,gospel to give up all his wisdom1 and to lay it at the feet of ,jesus1 to become a fool and to say3 ,lord1 ,i know nothing as ,i should know it4 ,i have been preaching the ,gospel1 and how little ,i have seen of the glory of the blessed land1 and the blessed life6 ,why is it that the blessed ,spirit can not teach us more effectually8 ,no reason but this3 the wisdom of man prevents it2 the wisdom of man prevents the light of ,god from shining in4 ,and so we could say of other things2 give up all4 ,some may have an individual sin to give up4 ,there may be a ,christian man who is angry with his brother4 ,there may be a ,christian woman who has quarreled with her neighbor4 ,there may be friends who are not living as they should4 ,there may be ,christians holding fast some little doubtful thing1 not willing to surrender and leave behind the whole of the wilderness life and lust4 ,oh1 do take this step and say3 ,i am ready to give up everything to have this pearl of great price2 my time1 my attention1 my business1 ,i count all subordinate to this rest of ,god as the first thing in my life2 ,i yield all to walk in perfect fellowship with ,god4 ,you can not get that and live every day in perfect fellowship with ,god1 without giving up time to it4 ,you take time for everything4 ,how many hours a day has a young lady spent for years and years that she may become proficient on the piano8 ,how many years does a young man study to fit himself for the profession of the law or medicine8 ,hours1 and days1 and weeks1 and months1 and years1 gladly given up to perfect himself for his profession4 ,and do you expect that religion is so cheap that without giving time you can find close fellowship with ,god8 ,you can not4 ,but1 oh1 my brothers and sisters1 the pearl of great price is worth everything4 ,god is worth everything4 ,christ is worth everything4 ,oh1 come to-day1 and say1 ,lord1 at any cost help me2 ,i do want to live this life4 ,and if you find it difficult to say this1 and if there is a struggle within the heart1 never mind2 say to ,god1 ,lord1 ,i thought ,i was willing1 but ,i see how much unwillingness there is2 come and discover what the evil is still in the heart4 ,by ,his grace1 if you will lie at ,his feet and trust ,him you may depend upon it deliverance will come4 ,then comes the next step1 and that is to say3 ,i do now give up myself to the holy and everlasting ,god1 for ,him to lead me into this perfect rest4 ,ah1 friends1 we must learn to meet ,god face to face4 ,my sin has been against ,god4 ,david felt that when he said1 ,against ,thee1 ,thee only1 have ,i sinned4 ,it is ,god on the judgment seat whose face you will have to meet personally4 ,it is ,god ,himself1 personally1 who met you to pardon your sins4 ,come to-day and put yourself into the hands of the living ,god4 ,god is love4 ,god is near4 ,god is waiting to give you ,his blessing4 ,the heart of ,god is yearning over you4 ,my child1 ,god says1 you think you are longing for rest2 it is ,i that am longing for you1 because ,i desire to rest in your heart as ,my home1 as ,my temple4 ,you need your ,god4 ,yes1 but your ,god needs you1 to find the full satisfaction of ,his ,father heart in ,christ in you4 ,come to-day and say3 ,i do now give up myself to ,christ4 ,i have made the choice4 ,i deliberately say1 ',lord ,god1 ,i am the purchaser of the pearl of great price4 ,i give up everything for it4 ,in the name of ,jesus ,i accept that life of perfect rest4' ,and then comes my last thought4 ,when you have said that1 then add3 ,and now1 ,i trust ,god to make it all real to me in my experience4 ,whether ,i am to live one year1 or thirty years1 ,i have heard it to-day again3 ',god is ,jehovah1 the great ,i ,,am of the everlasting future1 the eternal ,one2 and thirty years hence is to ,him just the same as now2' and that ,god gives ,himself to me1 not according to my power to hold ,him1 but according to ,his almighty power of love to hold me4 ,will you trust ,god to-day for the future8 ,oh1 will you look up to ,god in ,christ ,jesus once again8 ,a thousand times you have heard1 and thought1 and thanked--,god has given us ,his ,son2 but will you not to-day say1 ,how shall ,he not with ,him give me all things1 every moment and every day of my life8 ,say that in faith4 ,how shall ,god not be willing to keep me in the light of ,his countenance1 in the full experience of ,christ's saving power8 ,did ,god make the sun to shine so brightly1 and is the light so willing to pour itself into every nook and corner where it can find entrance8 ,and will not my ,god1 who is love1 be willing all the day to shine into this heart of mine1 from morning to night1 from year's end to year's end8 ,god is love1 and longs to give ,himself to us4 ,oh1 come1 ,christians1 you have hitherto lived a life in your own strength4 ,will you not begin to-day8 ,will you not choose a life in which ,god shall be all1 and in which you rest in ,him for all8 ,will you not choose a life in which you shall say3 ,oh1 ,god1 ,i ask1 ,i expect1 ,i trust ,thee for it4 ,i enter this day into the rest of ,god to let ,god keep me2 to let ,god keep me every hour4 ,i enter into the rest of ,god4 ,are you ready to say that8 ,be of good courage2 fear not1 you can trust ,god4 ,he brings into rest4 ,listen to ,god's word in the ,prophets once again3 ,take heed1 and be quiet4 ,fear not1 neither be faint-hearted4 ,joshua brought ,israel into the land4 ,god did it through ,joshua2 and ,joshua is ,jesus1 your ,jesus1 who washed you in ,his blood2 your ,jesus1 whom you have learned to know as a precious ,saviour4 ,trust ,him to-day afresh3 ,o my ,joshua1 take me1 bring me in and ,i will trust ,thee1 and in ,thee the ,father4 ,you may count upon it4 ,he will take you and the work will be done4 ,,the ,,kingdom ,,first4 ,v4 ,matt #f3 #cc4--,seek ye first the kingdom of ,god4 ,you have heard what need there is of unity in ,christian life and ,christian work4 ,and where is the bond of unity between the life of the ,church1 the life of the individual believer and the work to be done among the heathen8 ,one of the expressions for that unity is3 ,seek first the ,kingdom of ,god1 ,that does not mean1 as many people take it1 ,seek salvation2 seek to get into the ,kingdom1 and then thank ,god1 and rest there4 ,ah1 no2 the meaning of that word is entirely different and infinitely larger4 ,it means3 ,let the ,kingdom of ,god1 in all its breadth and length1 in all its ,heavenly glory and power2 let the ,kingdom of ,god be the one thing you live for1 and all other things will be added unto you4 ,seek first the ,kingdom of ,god4 ,let me just try to answer two very simple questions2 the one3 ,why should the ,kingdom of ,god be first8 and the other3 ,how can it be8 ,the one1 ,why should it be so8 ,god has created us as reasonable beings1 so that the more clearly we see that according to the law of nature1 according to the fitness of things1 something that is set before us is proper1 and an absolute necessity1 we so much the more willingly accept it1 and aim after it4 ,and now1 why does ,christ say this3 ,seek first the ,kingdom of ,god8 ,if you want to understand the reason1 look at ,god1 and look at man4 ,look at ,god4 ,who is ,god8 ,the great ,being for whom alone the universe exists2 in whom alone it can have its happiness4 ,it came from ,him4 ,it can not find any rest or joy but in ,him4 ,oh1 that ,christians understood and believed that ,god is a fountain of happiness1 perfect1 everlasting blessedness6 ,what would the result be8 ,every ,christian would say1 ,the more ,i can have of ,god1 the happier4 ,the more of ,god's will1 and the more of ,god's love1 and the more of ,god's fellowship1 the happier4 ,how ,christians1 if they believed that with their whole heart1 would1 with the utmost ease1 give up everything that would separate them from ,god6 ,why is it that we find it so hard to hold fellowship with ,god8 ,a young minister once said to me1 ,why is it that ,i have so much more interest in study than in prayer1 and how can you teach me the art of fellowship with ,god8 ,my answer was3 ,oh1 my brother1 if we have any true conception of what ,god is1 the art of fellowship with ,him will come naturally1 and will be a delight4 ,yes1 if we believed ,god to be only joy to the one who comes to ,him1 only a fountain of unlimited blessing1 how we should give up all for ,him6 ,has not joy a far stronger attraction than anything in the world8 ,is it not in every beauty1 or in every virtue1 in every pursuit1 the joy that is set before us that draws8 ,and if we believe that ,god is a fountain of joy1 and sweetness1 and power to bless1 how our hearts will turn aside from everything1 and say3 ,oh1 the beauty of my ,god6 ,i rejoice in ,him alone4 ,but1 alas6 the ,kingdom of ,god looks to many as a burden1 and as something unnatural4 ,it looks like a strain1 and we seek some relaxation in the world1 and ,god is not our chief joy4 ,i come to you with a message4 ,it is right1 on account of what ,god is as ,infinite ,love1 as ,infinite ,blessing2 it is right and more1 it is our highest privilege to listen to ,christ's words1 and to seek ,god and ,his ,kingdom first and above everything4 ,and then look at man again2 man's nature4 ,what was man created for8 ,to live in the likeness of ,god1 and as ,his image4 ,now1 if we have been created in the image and likeness of ,god1 we can find our happiness in nothing except that in which ,god finds ,his happiness4 ,the more like ,him we are the happier4 ,and in what does ,god find ,his happiness8 ,in two things3 ,everlasting righteousness and everlasting beneficence4 ,god is righteousness everlasting4 ,he is ,light1 and in ,him is no darkness4 ,the ,kingdom1 the domination1 the rule of ,god will bring us nothing but righteousness4 ,seek the ,kingdom of ,god and ,his righteousness4 ,if men but knew what sin is1 and if men really longed to be free from everything like sin1 what a grand message this would be6 ,jesus comes to lead me to ,god and ,his righteousness4 ,we were created to be like ,god1 in ,his perfect righteousness and holiness4 ,what a prospect6 ,and in ,his love too4 ,the ,kingdom of ,god means this3 that there is in ,god a rule of universal love4 ,he loves1 and loves1 and never ceases to love2 and ,he longs to bless all who will yield to ,his pleadings4 ,god is ,light1 and ,god is ,love4 ,and now the message comes to man4 ,can you think of a higher nobility2 can you think of anything grander than to take the position that ,god takes1 and to be one with ,god in ,his ,kingdom2 i4e41 to have ,his ,kingdom fill your heart2 to have ,god ,himself as your ,king and portion8 ,yes1 my friends1 let us remember that we must not just try to get here and there one and another of the blessings of the ,kingdom4 ,but the glory of the ,kingdom is this3 that it is the ,kingdom of ,god where ,god is all in all4 ,the ,french ,empire1 when ,napoleon lived1 had military glory as the ideal4 ,every ,frenchman's heart thrilled at the name of ,napoleon as the man who had given the empire its glory4 ,if we realized what it means1--our ,god takes us up into ,his ,kingdom and puts ,his ,kingdom into us and with the ,kingdom we have ,god ,himself1 that blessed ,one1 possessing us--surely there would be nothing that could move our hearts to enthusiasm like this4 ,the ,kingdom of ,god first6 ,blessed be ,his name ,i ,look at man4 ,i don't speak about man's sins1 and about man's wretchedness1 and about man's seeking everywhere for pleasure1 and for rest1 and for deliverance from sin1 but ,i just say3 ,think what man is by creation and think what man is now by redemption2 and let every heart say3 ,it is right4 ,there is no blessedness or glory like that of the ,kingdom4 ,the ,kingdom of ,god ought to be first in my whole life and being4 ,but now comes the important question1 ,how can ,i attain this8 ,here we come to the great question that is troubling the lives of tens of thousands of ,christians throughout the world4 ,and it is strange that it is so very difficult for them to find the answer2 that tens of thousands are not able to give an answer2 and others1 when the answer is given1 can not understand it2 ,the day the centurion found his joy in being devoted to the ,roman ,empire1 it took charge of him with all its power and glory4 ,dear friends1 how are we to attain to this blessed position in which the ,kingdom of ,god shall fill our hearts with such enthusiasm that it will spontaneously be first every day8 ,the answer is1 first of all give up everything for it4 ,you have heard of the ,roman soldier who gave up his soul1 his affection1 his life1 who gave up everything1 to be a soldier2 and you have often seen1 in history ancient and modern1 how men who were not soldiers gave up their lives in sacrifice for a king or a country4 ,you have heard how in the ,south ,african ,republic not many years ago the war of liberty was fought4 ,after three years of oppression by the ,english the people said they would endure it no longer1 and so they gathered together to fight for their liberty4 ,they knew how weak they were1 as compared with the ,english power1 but they said1 ,we must have our liberty4 ,they bound themselves together to fight for it1 and when that vow had been made1 they went to their homes to prepare for the struggle4 ,such a thrill of enthusiasm passed through that country that in many cases women1 when their husbands might have been allowed to stay at home1 said to them3 ,no1 go1 even though you have not been commanded4 ,and there were mothers who1 when one son was called out to the front1 said3 ,no1 take two1 three4 ,every man and woman was ready to die4 ,it was in very deed ,our country first1 before everything4 ,and even so1 friends1 must it be with you if you want this wonderful ,kingdom of ,god to take possession of you4 ,i pray you by the mercies of ,god1 give up every-thing for it4 ,you do not know at once what that may mean1 but take the words and speak them out at the footstool of ,god3 ,anything1 everything1 for the ,kingdom of ,god4 ,persevere in that1 and by the ,holy ,spirit your ,god will begin to open to you the double blessing3 on the one hand1 the blessedness of the ,kingdom which comes to possess your heart2 and on the other hand1 the blessedness of being surrendered to ,him1 and sacrificing and giving up all for ,him4 ,the ,kingdom of ,god first6 ,how am ,i to reach that blessed life8 ,the answer is3 ,give up everything for it4 ,and then a second answer would be this3 ,live every day and hour of your life in the humble desire to maintain that position4 ,there are people who hear this test1 and who say it is true1 and that they want to obey it4 ,but if you were to ask them how much time they spend with ,god day by day1 you would be surprised and grieved to hear how little time they give up to ,him4 ,and yet they wonder that the blessedness of the divine life disappears4 ,we prove the value we attach to things by the time we devote to them4 ,the ,kingdom should be first every day1 and all the day4 ,let the ,kingdom be first every morning4 ,begin the day with ,god1 and ,god ,himself will maintain ,his ,kingdom in your heart4 ,do believe that4 ,rome did its utmost to maintain the authority of the man who gave himself to live for it4 ,and ,god1 the living ,god1 will ,he not maintain ,his authority in your soul if you submit to ,him8 ,he will1 indeed4 ,come to ,him2 only come1 and give yourself up to ,him in fellowship through ,christ ,jesus4 ,seek to maintain that fellowship with ,god all the day4 ,ah1 friends1 a man cannot have the ,kingdom of ,god first1 and at times1 by way of relaxation1 throw it off and seek his enjoyment in the things of this world4 ,people have a secret idea life will become too solemn1 too great a strain2 it will be too difficult every moment of the day1 from morning to evening1 to have the ,kingdom of ,god first4 ,one sees at once how wrong it is to think thus4 ,the presence of the love of ,god must every moment be our highest joy4 ,let us say3 ,by the help of ,god1 it shall ever be the ,kingdom of ,god first4 ,and then1 my last remark1 in answer to that question1 ,how can it be8 is this3 it can be only by the power of the ,holy ,ghost4 ,let us remember that ,god's ,word comes to us with the language1 ,be filled with the ,spirit2 and if you are content with less of the ,spirit than ,god offers1 not utterly and entirely yielding to be filled with the ,spirit1 you do not obey the command4 ,but listen3 ,god has made a wonderful provision4 ,jesus ,christ came preaching the ,gospel of the ,kingdom1 and proclaimed ,the ,kingdom is at hand4 ,some1 ,he said1 are standing here who will not see death until they see the ,kingdom come in power4 ,he said to the disciples1 ,the ,kingdom is within you4 ,and when did the ,kingdom come--that ,kingdom of ,god upon earth8 ,when the ,holy ,ghost descended4 ,on ,ascension ,day the ,king went and sat down upon the throne at the right hand of ,god1 and the ,kingdom of ,god1 in ,christ1 the ,kingdom of ,heaven upon earth1 was inaugurated4 ,when the ,holy ,ghost came down ,he brought ,god into the heart1 and ,christ1 and established the rule of ,god in power4 ,i am afraid sometimes1 that in speaking of the ,holy ,spirit we forget one thing4 ,the ,holy ,spirit is very much spoken of in connection with power2 and it is right that we should seek power4 ,it is not so much spoken of in connection with the graces4 ,and yet these are always more important than the gifts of power--the holiness1 the humility1 the meekness1 the gentleness1 and the lovingness2 these are the true marks of the ,kingdom4 ,we speak rightly of the ,holy ,spirit as the only one who can breathe all this into us4 ,but ,i think there is a third thing almost more important1 that we forget1 and that is3 in the ,spirit1 the ,father and the ,son themselves come4 ,when ,christ first promised the ,holy ,spirit1 and spoke about ,his approaching coming1 ,he said3 ,in that day ye shall know that ,i am in the ,father1 and ye in me1 and ,i in you4 ,he that loveth me keepeth my commandments2 and my ,father will love him1 and we will come and make our abode with him4 ,brother1 would you have the ,kingdom of ,god first in your life1 you must have the ,kingdom in your hearts4 ,if my heart be set upon a thing ,i may be bound with chains1 but the moment the chains are loosened ,i fly towards the object of my affection and desire4 ,and just so the ,kingdom must be within us1 and then it is easy to say3 ,the ,kingdom first4 ,but to have the ,kingdom within us in truth1 we must have ,god the ,father1 and ,christ the ,son1 by the ,holy ,ghost within us too4 ,no ,kingdom without the ,king4 ,you are called to likeness with ,christ4 ,oh1 how many ,christians strive after this part and that part of the likeness of ,christ1 and forget the root of the whole6 ,what is the root of all8 ,that ,christ gave ,himself up utterly to ,god1 and ,his ,kingdom and glory4 ,he gave ,his life1 that ,god's ,kingdom might be established4 ,do you the same to-day and give your life to ,god to be every moment a living sacrifice1 and the ,kingdom will come with power into your heart4 ,give yourself up to ,christ4 ,let ,christ the ,king reign in your heart1 and the heavenly ,kingdom will come there and the ,presence and the ,rule of ,god be known in power4 ,oh1 think of that wonderful thing that is going to happen in the great eternity4 ,we read of it in #ast ,corinthians3 ,god has entrusted ,christ with the ,kingdom1 but there is coming a day when ,christ shall come ,himself again to be subjected unto the ,father1 and ,he shall give up the ,kingdom to the ,father1 that ,god may be all1 and in that day ,christ shall say before the universe3 ,this is my glory1 ,i give back the ,kingdom to the ,father6 ,christians1 if your ,christ finds ,his glory here on earth in dying and sacrificing ,himself for the ,kingdom and then in eternity again in giving the ,kingdom to ,god1 shall not you and ,i come to ,god to do the same and count anything we have as loss1 that the ,kingdom of ,god may be made manifest1 and that ,god may be glorified4 ,,christ ,,our ,,life4 ,,vi4 ,colossians #c3 #d4--;,christ who is our life4 ,one question that rises in every mind is this3 ,how can ,i live that life of perfect trust in ,god8 ,many do not know the right answer1 or the full answer4 ,it is this3 ,christ must live it in me4 ,that is what ,he became man for2 as a man to live a life of trust in ,god1 and so to show to us how we ought to live4 ,when ,he had done that upon earth1 ,he went to heaven1 that ,he might do more than show us1 might give us1 and live in us that life of trust4 ,it is as we understand what the life of ,christ is and how it becomes ours1 that we shall be prepared to desire and to ask of ,him that ,he would live it ,himself in us4 ,when first we have seen what the life is1 then we shall understand how it is that ,he can actually take possession1 and make us like ,himself4 ,i want especially to direct attention to that first question4 ,i wish to set before you the life of ,christ as ,he lived it1 that we may understand what it is that ,he has for us and that we can expect from ,him4 ,christ ,jesus lived a life upon earth that ,he expects us literally to imitate4 ,we often say that we long to be like ,christ4 ,we study the traits of ,his character1 mark ,his footsteps1 and pray for grace to be like ,him1 and yet1 somehow1 we succeed but very little4 ,and why8 ,because we are wanting to pluck the fruit while the root is absent4 ,if we want really to understand what the imitation of ,christ means1 we must go to that which constituted the very root of ,his life before ,god4 ,it was a life of absolute dependence1 absolute trust1 absolute surrender1 and until we are one with ,him in what is the principle of ,his life1 it is in vain to seek here or there to copy the graces of that life4 ,in the ,gospel story we find five great points of special importance2 the birth1 the life on earth1 the death1 the resurrection1 and the ascension4 ,in these we have what an old writer has called the process of ,jesus ,christ2 the process by which ,he became what ,he is to-day--our glorified ,king1 and our life4 ,in all this life process we must be made like unto ,him4 ,look at the first4 ,what have we to say about ,his birth8 ,this3 ,he received ,his life from ,god4 ,what about ,his life upon earth8 ,he lived that life in dependence upon ,god4 ,about ,his death8 ,he gave up ,his life to ,god4 ,about ,his resurrection8 ,he was raised from the dead by ,god4 ,and about ,his ascension8 ,he lives ,his life in glory with ,god4 ,first1 ,he received ,his life from ,god4 ,and why is it of consequence that we should look to that8 ,because ,christ ,jesus had in that the starling-point of ,his whole life4 ,he said3 ,the ,father sent me2 ,the ,father hath given the ,son all things2 ,the ,father hath given the ,son to have life in ,himself4 ,christ received it as ,his own life1 just as ,god has ,his life in ,himself4 ,and yet1 all the time it was a life given and received4 ,because the ,father almighty has given this life unto me1 the ,son of man on earth1 ,i can count upon ,god to maintain it and to carry me through all4 ,and that is the first lesson we need4 ,we need often to meditate on it1 and to pray1 and to think1 and to wait before ,god1 until our hearts open to the wonderful consciousness that the everlasting ,god has a divine life within us which can not exist but through ,him4 ,i believe ,god has given ,his life1 it roots in ,him4 ,i shall feel it must be maintained by ,him4 ,we often think that ,god has given us a life which is now our own1 a spiritual life1 and that we are to take charge2 and then we complain that we can not keep it right4 ,no wonder4 ,we must learn to live1 learn to live as ,jesus did4 ,i have a ,god-given treasure in this earthen vessel4 ,i have the light of the knowledge of the glory of ,god in the face of ,christ4 ,i have the life of ,god's ,son within me given me by ,god ,himself1 and it can only be maintained by ,god ,himself as ,i live in fellowship with ,him4 ,what does the ,apostle ,paul teach us in ,romans ,,vi42 there where he has just told us that we must reckon ourselves dead unto sin1 and alive unto ,god in ,christ ,jesus8 ,he goes on at once to say3 ,therefore yield1 present yourselves unto ,god1 as those that are alive from the dead4 ,how often a ,christian hears solemn words about his being alive to ,god1 and his having to reckon himself dead indeed to sin1 and alive to ,god in ,christ6 ,he does not know what to do2 he immediately casts about3 ,how can ,i keep it1 this death and this life8 ,listen to what ,paul says4 ,the moment that you reckon yourself dead to sin and alive to ,god1 go with that life to ,god ,himself1 and present yourself as alive from the dead1 and say to ,god3 ,lord1 ,thou hast given me this life4 ,thou alone canst keep it4 ,i bring it to ,thee4 ,i cannot understand all4 ,i hardly know what ,i have got1 but ,i come to ,god to perfect what ,he has begun4 ,to live like ,christ1 ,i must be conscious every moment that my life has come from ,god1 and ,he alone can maintain it4 ,then1 secondly1 how did ,christ live out ,his life during the thirty-three years in which ,he walked here upon earth8 ,he lived it in dependence on ,god4 ,you know how continually ,he says3 ,the ,son can do nothing of ,himself4 ,the words that ,i speak1 ,i speak not of ,myself4 ,he waited unceasingly for the teaching1 and the commands1 and the guidance of the ,father4 ,he prayed for power from the ,father4 ,whatever ,he did1 ,he did in the name of the ,father4 ,he1 the ,son of ,god1 felt the need of much prayer1 of persevering prayer1 of bringing down from heaven and maintaining the life of fellowship with ,god in prayer4 ,we hear a great deal about trusting ,god4 ,most blessed6 ,and we may say3 ,ah1 that is what ,i want1 and we may forget what is the very secret of all1--that ,god1 in ,christ1 must work all in us4 ,i not only need ,god as an object of trust1 but ,i must have ,christ within as the power to trust2 ,he must live ,his own life of trust in me4 ,look at it in that wonderful story of ,paul1 the ,apostle1 the beloved servant of ,god4 ,he is in danger of self-confidence1 and ,god in heaven sends that terrible trial in ,asia to bring him down1 lest he trust in himself and not in the living ,god4 ,god watched over his servant that he should be kept trusting4 ,remember that other story about the thorn in the flesh1 in #b ,corinthians ,,xii41 and think what that means4 ,he was in danger of exalting himself1 and the blessed ,master came to humble him1 and to teach him3 ,i keep thee weak1 that thou mayest learn to trust not in thyself1 but in ,me4 ,if we are to enter into the rest of faith1 and to abide there2 if we are to live the life of victory in the land of ,canaan1 it must begin here4 ,we must be broken down from all self-confidence and learn like ,christ to depend absolutely and unceasingly upon ,god4 ,there is a greater work to be done in that than we perhaps know4 ,we must be broken down1 and the habit of our souls must be unceasingly3 ,i am nothing2 ,god is all4 ,i cannot walk before ,god as ,i should for one hour1 unless ,god keep the life ,he has given me4 ,what a blessed solution ,god gives then to all our questions and our difficulties1 when ,he says3 ,my child1 ,christ has gone through it all for thee4 ,christ hath wrought out a new nature that can trust ,god2 and ,christ the ,living ,one in heaven will live in thee1 and enable thee to live that life of trust4 ,that is why ,paul said3 ,such confidence have we toward ,god1 through ,christ4 ,what does that mean8 ,does it only mean through ,christ as the mediator1 or intercessor8 ,verily1 no4 ,it means much more2 through ,christ living in and enabling us to trust ,god as ,he trusted ,him4 ,then comes1 thirdly1 the death of ,christ4 ,what does that teach us of ,christ's relation to the ,father8 ,it opens up to us one of the deepest and most solemn lessons of ,christ life1 one which the ,church of ,christ understands all too little4 ,we know what the death of ,christ means as an atonement1 and we never can emphasize too much that blessed substitution and bloodshedding1 by which redemption was won for us4 ,but let us remember1 that is only half the meaning of ,his death4 ,the other half is this3 just as much as ,christ was my substitute1 who died for me1 just so much ,he is my head1 in whom1 and with whom1 ,i die2 and just as ,he lives for me1 to intercede1 ,he lives in me1 to carry out and to perfect ,his life4 ,and if ,i want to know what that life is which ,he will live in me1 ,i must look at ,his death4 ,by ,his death ,he proved that ,he possessed life only to hold it1 and to spend it1 for ,god4 ,to the very uttermost2 without the shadow of a moment's exception1 ,he lived for ,god1--every moment1 everywhere1 ,he held life only for ,his ,god4 ,and so1 if one wants to live a life of perfect trust1 there must be the perfect surrender of his life1 and his will1 even unto the very death4 ,he must be willing to go all lengths with ,jesus1 even to ,calvary4 ,when a boy twelve years of age ,jesus said3 ,wist ye not that ,i must be about my ,father's business8 and again when ,he came to ,jordan to be baptized3 ,it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness4 ,so on through all ,his life1 ,he ever said3 ,it is my meat and drink to do the will of my ,father4 ,i come not to do my own will1 but the will of ,him that sent me4 ,lo1 ,i am come to do ,thy will1 ,o ,god4 ,and in the agony of ,gethsemane1 ,his words were3 ,not my will1 but ,thine1 be done4 ,some one says3 ,i do indeed desire to live the life of perfect trust2 ,i desire to let ,christ live it in me2 ,i am longing to come to such an apprehension of ,christ as shall give me the certainty that ,christ will forever abide in me2 ,i want to come to the full assurance that ,christ1 my ,joshua1 will keep me in the land of victory4 ,what is needful for that8 ,my answer is3 ,take care that you do not take a false ,christ1 an imaginary ,christ1 a half ,christ4 ,and what is the full ,christ8 ,the full ,christ is the man who said1 ,i give up everything to the death that ,god may be glorified4 ,i have not a thought2 ,i have not a wish2 ,i would not live a moment except for the glory of ,god4 ,you say at once1 ,what ,christian can ever attain that8 ,do not ask that question1 but ask1 ,has ,christ attained it and does ,christ promise to live in me8 ,accept ,him in ,his fullness and leave ,him to teach you how far ,he can bring you and what ,he can work in you4 ,make no conditions or stipulations about failure1 but cast yourself upon1 abandon yourself to this ,christ who lived that life of utter surrender to ,god that ,he might prepare a new nature which ,he could impart to you and in which ,he might make you like ,himself4 ,then you will be in the path by which ,he can lead you on to blessed experience and possession of what ,he can do for you4 ,christ ,jesus came into the world with a commandment from the ,father that ,he should lay down ,his life1 and ,he lived with that one thought in ,his bosom ,his whole life long4 ,and the one thought that ought to be in the heart of every believer is this3 ,i am in the death with ,christ2 absolutely1 unchangeably given up to wait upon ,god1 that ,god may work out ,his purpose and glory in me from moment to moment4 ,few attain the victory and the enjoyment and the full experience at once4 ,but this you can do3 ,take the right attitude and as you look to ,jesus and what ,he was1 say3 ,father1 ,thou hast made me a partaker of the divine nature1 a partaker of ,christ4 ,it is in the life of ,christ given up to ,thee to the death1 in ,his power and indwelling1 in ,his likeness1 that ,i desire to live out my life before ,thee4 ,death is a solemn thing1 an awful thing4 ,in the ,garden it cost ,christ great agony to die that death2 and no wonder it is not easy to us4 ,but we willingly consent when we have learned the secret2 in death alone the life of ,god will come2 in death there is blessedness unspeakable4 ,it was this made ,paul so willing to bear the sentence of death in himself2 he knew the ,god who quickeneth the dead4 ,the sentence of death is on everything that is of nature4 ,but are we willing to accept it1 do we cherish it8 and are we not rather trying to escape the sentence or to forget it8 ,we do not believe fully that the sentence of death is on us4 ,whatever is of nature must die4 ,ask ,god to make you willing to believe with your heart that to die with ,christ is the only way to live in ,him4 ,you ask1 ,but must it then be dying every day8 ,yes1 beloved2 ,jesus lived every day in the prospect of the cross1 and we1 in the power of ,his victorious life1 being made conformable to ,his death1 must rejoice every day in going down with ,him into death4 ,take an illustration4 ,take an oak of some hundred years' growth4 ,how was that oak born8 ,in a grave4 ,the acorn was planted in the ground1 a grave was made for it that the acorn might die4 ,it died and disappeared2 it cast roots downward1 and it cast shoots upward1 and now that tree has been standing a hundred years4 ,where is it standing8 ,in its grave2 all the time in the very grave where the acorn died2 it has stood there stretching its roots deeper and deeper into that earth in which its grave was made1 and yet1 all the time1 though it stood in the very grave where it had died1 it has been growing higher1 and stronger1 and broader1 and more beautiful4 ,and all the fruit it ever bore1 and all the foliage that adorned it year by year1 it owed to that grave in which its roots are cast and kept4 ,even so ,christ owes everything to ,his death and ,his grave4 ,and we1 too1 owe everything to that grave of ,jesus4 ,oh6 let us live every day rooted in the death of ,jesus4 ,be not afraid1 but say3 ,to my own will ,i will die2 to human wisdom1 and human strength1 and to the world ,i will die2 for it is in the grave of my ,lord that ,his life has its beginning1 and its strength and its glory4 ,this brings us to our next thought4 ,first1 ,christ received life from the ,father2 second1 ,christ lived it in dependence on the ,father2 third1 ,christ gave it up in death to the ,father2 and now1 fourth1 ,christ received it again raised by the ,father1 by the power of the glory of the ,father4 ,oh1 the deep meaning of the resurrection of ,christ6 ,what did ,christ do when ,he died8 ,he went down into the darkness and absolute helplessness of death4 ,he gave up a life that was without sin2 a life that was ,god-given2 a life that was beautiful and precious2 and ,he said1 ,i will give it into the hands of my ,father if ,he asks it2 and ,he did it2 and ,he was there in the grave waiting on ,god to do ,his will2 and because ,he honored ,god to the uttermost in ,his helplessness1 ,god lifted ,him up to the very uttermost of glory and power4 ,christ lost nothing by giving up ,his life in death to the ,father4 ,and so1 if you want the glory and the life of ,god to come upon you1 it is in the grave of utter helplessness that that life of glory will be born4 ,jesus was raised from the dead1 and that resurrection power1 by the grace of ,god1 can and will work in us4 ,let no one expect to live a right life until he lives a full resurrection life in the power of ,jesus4 ,let me state in a different way what this resurrection means4 ,christ had a perfect life1 given by ,god4 ,the ,father said3 ,will you give up that life to me8 ,will you part with it at my command8 ,and ,he parted with it1 but ,god gave it back to ,him in a second life ten thousand times more glorious than that earthly life4 ,so ,god will do to every one of us who willingly consents to part with his life4 ,have you ever understood it8 ,jesus was born twice4 ,the first time ,he was born in ,bethlehem4 ,that was a birth into a life of weakness4 ,but the second time1 ,he was born from the grave2 ,he is the first-born from the dead4 ,because ,he gave up the life that ,he had by ,his first birth1 ,god gave him the life of the second birth1 in the glory of heaven and the throne of ,god4 ,christians1 that is exactly what we need to do4 ,a man may be an earnest ,christian2 a man may be a successful worker2 he may be a ,christian that has had a measure of growth and advance2 but if he has not entered this fullness of blessing1 then he needs to come to a second and deeper experience of ,god's saving power2 he needs1 just as ,god brought him out of ,egypt1 through the ,red ,sea1 to come to a point where ,god brings him through ,jordan into ,canaan4 ,beloved1 we have been baptized into the death of ,christ4 ,it is as we say3 ,i have had a very blessed life1 and ,i have had many blessed experiences1 and ,god has done many things for me2 but ,i am conscious there is something wrong still2 ,i am conscious that this life of rest and victory is not really mine4 ,before ,christ got ,his life of rest and victory on the throne1 ,he had to die and give up all4 ,do you it1 too1 and you shall with ,him share ,his victory and glory4 ,it is as we follow ,jesus in ,his death1 that ,his resurrection1 power and joy will be ours4 ,and then comes our last point4 ,the fifth step in ,his wondrous path was3 ,he was lifted up to be forever with the ,father4 ,because ,he humbled ,himself1 therefore ,god highly exalted ,him4 ,wherein cometh the beauty and the blessedness of that exaltation of ,jesus8 ,for ,himself perfect fellowship with the ,father2 for others participation in the power of ,god's omnipotence4 ,yes1 that was the fruit of ,his death4 ,scripture promises not only that ,god will1 in the resurrection life1 give us joy1 and peace that passeth all understanding1 victory over sin1 and rest in ,god1 but ,he will baptize us with the ,holy ,ghost2 or1 in other words1 will fill us with the ,holy ,ghost4 ,jesus was lifted to the throne of heaven1 that ,he might there receive from the ,father the ,spirit in ,his new1 divine manifestation1 to be poured out in ,his fullness4 ,and as we come to the resurrection life1 the life in the faith of ,him who is one with us1 and sits upon the throne--as we come to that1 we too may be partakers of the fellowship with ,christ ,jesus as ,he ever dwells in ,god's presence1 and the ,holy ,spirit will fill us1 to work in us1 and out of us in a way that we have never yet known4 ,jesus got this divine life by depending absolutely upon the ,father all ,his life long1 depending upon ,him even down into death4 ,jesus got that life in the full glory of the ,spirit to be poured out1 by giving ,himself up in obedience and surrender to ,god alone1 and leaving ,god even in the grave to work out ,his mighty power2 and that very ,christ will live out ,his life in you and me4 ,oh1 the mystery6 ,oh1 the glory6 ,and oh1 the ,divine certainty4 ,jesus ,christ means to live out that life in you and me4 ,what think you1 ought we not to humble ourselves before ,god8 ,have we been ,christians so many years1 and realized so little what we are8 ,i am a vessel set apart1 cleansed1 emptied1 consecrated2 just standing1 waiting every moment for ,god1 in ,christ1 by the ,holy ,spirit1 to work out in me as much of the holiness and the life of ,his ,son as pleases ,him4 ,and until the ,church of ,christ comes to go down into the grave of humiliation1 and confession1 and shame2 until the ,church of ,christ comes to lay itself in the very dust before ,god1 and to wait upon ,god to do something new1 and something wonderful1 something supernatural1 in lifting it up1 it will remain feeble in all its efforts to overcome the world4 ,within the ,church what lukewarmness1 what worldliness1 what disobedience1 what sin6 ,how can we ever fight this battle1 or meet these difficulties8 ,the answer is3 ,christ1 the risen ,one1 the crowned ,one1 the almighty ,one1 must come1 and live in the individual members4 ,but we can not expect this except as we die with ,him4 ,i referred to the tree grown so high and beautiful1 with its roots every day for a hundred years in the grave in which the acorn died4 ,children of ,god1 we must go down deeper into the grave of ,jesus4 ,we must cultivate the sense of impotence1 and dependence1 and nothingness1 until our souls walk before ,god every day in a deep and holy trembling4 ,god keep us from being anything4 ,god teach us to wait on ,him1 that ,he may work in us all ,he wrought in ,his ,son1 till ,christ ,jesus may live out ,his life in us6 ,for this may ,god help us6 ,,christ',s ,,humility ,,our ,,salvation4 ,,vii4 ,philippians #b3 #e-h4--,let this mind be in you which was also in ,christ ,jesus4 ,he humbled ,himself and became obedient unto death1 even the death of the cross4 ,all are familiar with this wonderful passage4 ,paul is speaking about one of the most simple1 practical things in daily life1--humility2 and in connection with that1 he gives us a wonderful exhibition of divine truth4 ,in this chapter we have the eternal ,godhead of ,jesus--,he was in the form of ,god1 and one with ,god4 ,we have ,his incarnation--,he came down1 and was found in the likeness of man4 ,we have his death with the atonement--,he became obedient unto death4 ,we have ,his exaltation--,god hath highly exalted ,him4 ,we have the glory of ,his ,kingdom1--that every knee shall bow1 and every tongue confess ,him4 ,and in what connection8 ,is it a theological study8 ,no4 ,is it a description of what ,christ is8 ,no2 it is in connection with a simple1 downright call to a life of humility in our intercourse with each other4 ,our life on earth is linked to all the eternal glory of the ,godhead as revealed in the exaltation of ,jesus4 ,the very looking to ,jesus1 the very bowing of the knee to ,jesus1 ought to be inseparably connected with a spirit of the very deepest humility4 ,consider the humility of ,jesus4 ,first of all1 that humility is our salvation2 then1 that humility is just the salvation we need2 and again1 that humility is the salvation which the ,holy ,spirit will give us4 ,humility is the salvation that ,christ brings4 ,that is our first thought4 ,we often have very vague1--,i might also say visionary--ideas of what ,christ is2 we love the person of ,christ1 but that which makes up ,christ1 which actually constitutes ,him the ,christ1 that we do not know or love4 ,if we love ,christ above everything1 we must love humility above everything1 for humility is the very essence of ,his life and glory1 and the salvation ,he brings4 ,just think of it4 ,where did it begin8 ,is there humility in heaven8 ,you know there is1 for they cast their crowns before the throne of ,god and the ,lamb4 ,but is there humility on the throne of ,god8 ,yes1 what was it but heavenly humility that made ,jesus on the throne willing to say3 ,i will go down to be a servant1 and to die for man2 ,i will go and live as the meek and lowly ,lamb of ,god8 ,jesus brought humility from heaven to us4 ,it was humility that brought ,him to earth1 or ,he never would have come4 ,in accordance with this1 just as ,christ became a man in this divine humility1 so ,his whole life was marked by it4 ,he might have chosen another form in which to appear2 ,he might have come in the form of a king1 but ,he chose the form of a servant4 ,he made ,himself of no reputation2 ,he emptied ,himself2 ,he chose the form of a servant4 ,he said3 ,the ,son of ,man is not come to be ministered unto1 to be served1 but to serve1 and to give ,his life a ransom for many4 ,and you know1 in the last night1 ,he took the place of a slave1 and girded ,himself with a towel1 and went to wash the feet of ,peter and the other disciples4 ,beloved1 the life of ,jesus upon earth was a life of the deepest humility4 ,it was this gave ,his life its worth and beauty in ,god's sight4 ,and then ,his death--possibly you haven't thought of it much in this connection--but ,his death was an exhibition of unparalleled humility4 ,he humbled ,himself1 and became obedient unto death1 even the death of the cross4 ,my ,lord ,christ took a low place all the time of ,his walk upon earth2 ,he took a very low place when ,he began to wash the disciples' feet2 but when ,he went to ,calvary1 ,he took the lowest place there was to be found in the universe of ,god1 the very lowest1 and ,he let sin1 and the curse of sin1 and the wrath of ,god1 cover ,him4 ,he took the place of a guilty sinner1 that ,he might bear our load1 that ,he might serve us in saving us from our wretchedness1 that ,he might by ,his precious blood win deliverance for us1 that ,he might by that blood wash us from our stain and our guilt4 ,we are in danger of thinking about ,christ1 as ,god1 as man1 as the atonement1 as the ,saviour1 and as exalted upon the throne1 and we form an image of ,christ1 while the real ,christ1 that which is the very heart of ,his character1 remains unknown4 ,what is the real ,christ8 ,divine humility1 bowed down into the very depths for our salvation4 ,the humility of ,jesus is our salvation4 ,we read1 ,he humbled ,himself1 therefore ,god hath highly exalted ,him4 ,the secret of ,his exaltation to the throne is this3 ,he humbled ,himself before ,god and man4 ,humility is the ,christ of ,god1 and now in ,heaven1 to-day1 that ,christ1 the ,man of humility1 is on the throne of ,god4 ,what do ,i see8 ,a ,lamb standing1 as it had been slain1 on the throne2 in the glory ,he is still the meek and gentle ,lamb of ,god4 ,his humility is the badge ,he wears there4 ,you often use that name--the ,lamb of ,god--and you use it in connection with the blood of the sacrifice4 ,you sing the praise of the ,lamb1 and you put your trust in the blood of the ,lamb4 ,praise ,god for the blood4 ,you never can trust that too much4 ,but ,i am afraid you forget that the word ,lamb must mean to us two things3 it must mean not only a sacrifice1 the shedding of blood1 but it must mean to us the meekness of ,god1 incarnate upon earth1 the meekness of ,god represented in the meekness and gentleness of a little ,lamb4 ,but the salvation that ,christ brought is not only a salvation that flows out of humility2 it also leads to humility4 ,we must understand that this is not only the salvation which ,christ brought2 but that it is exactly the salvation which you and ,i need4 ,what is the cause of all the wretchedness of man8 ,primarily pride2 man seeking his own will and his own glory4 ,yes1 pride is the root of every sin1 and so the ,lamb of ,god comes to us in our pride1 and brings us salvation from it4 ,we need above everything to be saved from our pride and our self-will4 ,it is good to be saved from the sins of stealing1 murdering1 and every other evil2 but a man needs above all to be saved from what is the root of all sin1 his self-will and his pride4 ,it is not until man begins to feel that this is exactly the salvation he needs1 that he really can understand what ,christ is1 and that he can accept ,him as his salvation4 ,this is the salvation that we as ,christians and believers specially need4 ,we know the sad story of ,peter and ,john2 what their self-will and pride brought upon them4 ,they needed to be saved from nothing except themselves1 and that is the lesson which we must learn1 if we are to enter the life of rest4 ,and how can we enter that life1 and dwell there in the bosom of the ,lamb of ,god1 if pride rules8 ,have we not often heard complaints of how much there is of pride in the ,church of ,christ8 ,what is the cause of all the division1 and strife1 and envying1 that is often found even among ,god's saints8 ,why is it that often in a family there is bitterness--it may be only for half an hour1 or half a day2 but what is the cause of hard judgments and hasty words8 ,what is the cause of estrangement between friends8 ,what is the cause of evil speaking8 ,what is the cause of selfishness and indifference to the feelings of others8 ,simply this3 the pride of man4 ,he lifts himself up1 and he claims the right to have his opinions and judgments as he pleases4 ,the salvation we need is indeed humility1 because it is only through humility that we can be restored to our right relation to ,god4 ,waiting upon ,god1--that is the only true expression for the real relation of the creature to ,god2 to be nothing before ,god4 ,what is the essential idea of a creature made by ,god8 ,it is this3 to be a vessel in which ,he can pour out ,his fullness1 in which ,he can exhibit ,his life1 ,his goodness1 ,his power1 and ,his love4 ,a vessel must be empty if it is to be filled1 and if we are to be filled with the life of ,god we must be utterly empty of self4 ,this is the glory of ,god1 that ,he is to fill all things1 and more especially ,his redeemed people4 ,and as this is the glory of the creature1 so this is the only redemption1 and the only glory of every redeemed soul1 to be empty and as nothing before ,god2 to wait upon ,him1 and to let ,god be all in all4 ,humility has a prominent place in almost every epistle of the ,new ,testament4 ,paul says3 ,walk with all lowliness and meekness1 with longsuffering1 forbearing one another in love2 endeavoring to keep the unity of the ,spirit in the bond of peace4 ,the nearer you get to ,god1 and the fuller of ,god1 the lowlier you will be2 and equally before ,god and man1 you will love to bow very low4 ,we know of ,peter's early self-confidence2 but in his epistles what a different language he speaks6 ,he wrote there3 ,let the younger be subject to the elder1 and all of you be subject one to another2 humble yourselves under the mighty hand of ,god1 that ,he may exalt you in ,his own time4 ,he understood1 and he dared to preach1 humility to all4 ,it is indeed the salvation we need4 ,what is it that prevents people from coming to that entire surrender that we speak of8 ,simply that they dare not abandon themselves1 and trust themselves1 to ,god2 that they are not willing to be nothing1 to give up their wishes1 and their will1 and their honor to ,christ4 ,shall we not accept the salvation that ,jesus offers8 ,he gave up ,his own will2 ,he gave up ,his own honor2 ,he gave up any confidence in ,himself2 ,he lived dependent upon ,god as a servant whom the ,father had sent4 ,there is the salvation we need1 the ,spirit of humility that was in ,christ4 ,what is it that often disturbs our hearts1 and our peace8 ,it is pride seeking to be something4 ,and ,god's decree is irreversible1 ,god resisteth the proud2 ,he gives grace only to the humble4 ,how often ,jesus had to speak to his disciples about it6 ,you will find repeatedly in the ,gospel those simple words3 ,he that humbleth ,himself shall be exalted2 he that exalteth himself shall be humbled4 ,he taught ,his disciples3 ,he that would be chiefest among you1 let him be the servant of all4 ,this should be our one cry before ,god3 ,let the power of the ,holy ,ghost come upon me1 with the humility of ,jesus1 that ,i may take the place that ,he took4 ,brother1 do you want a better place than ,jesus had8 ,are you seeking a higher place than ,jesus8 ,or will you say3 ,down1 down1 as deep as ever ,i can go4 ,by the help of ,god ,i will be nothing before ,god2 ,i will be where ,jesus was4 ,and now comes the third thought1--,this is the salvation the ,holy ,ghost brings4 ,you know what a change took place in those disciples4 ,let us praise ,god for it2 the ,holy ,spirit means this3 the life1 the disposition1 the temper1 and the inclinations of ,jesus1 brought down from heaven into our hearts4 ,that is the ,holy ,ghost4 ,he has ,his mighty workings to bestow as gifts2 but the fullness of the ,holy ,ghost is this3 ,jesus ,christ in ,his humility coming to dwell in us4 ,when ,christ was teaching ,his disciples1 all ,his instructions may have helped in the way of preparation1 breaking them down1 and making them conscious of what was wrong1 and awakening desire2 but the instruction could not do it1 and all their love to ,jesus and their desire to please ,him could not do it1 until the ,holy ,ghost came4 ,that is the promise ,christ gave4 ,he says1 in connection with the coming of the ,holy ,ghost3 ,i will come again to you4 ,christ said to ,his disciples3 ,i have been three years with you1 and you have been in the closest contact with me1 and ,i have done the utmost to reach your hearts2 ,i have sought to get into your hearts1 yet ,i have failed2 but fear not1 ,i will come again4 ,in that day ye shall see me1 and your hearts shall rejoice1 and no man shall take your joy from you4 ,i will come again to dwell in you1 and live my life in you4 ,christ went to heaven that ,he might get a power which ,he never had before4 ,and what was that8 ,the power of living in men4 ,god be praised for this6 ,it was because ,jesus1 the humble ,one1 the ,lamb of ,god1 the meek1 the lowly and gentle ,one1 came down in the ,holy ,spirit into the hearts of ,his disciples1 that the pride was expelled1 and that the very breath of ,heaven breathed through ,him in the love that made them one heart and one soul4 ,dear friends1 ,christ is yours4 ,christ as ,he comes in the power of the ,holy ,spirit is yours4 ,are you longing to have ,him1 to have the perfect ,christ ,jesus8 ,come1 then1 and see how1 amid the glories of ,his ,godhead--,his having been in the form of ,god1 and equal to ,god2 amid the glories of ,his incarnation--,his having become a man2 amid the glories of ,his atonement--,his having been obedient to death2 and amid the glories of ,his exaltation1 which is the chief and brightest glory1 ,he humbled ,himself from ,heaven down to earth and on earth down to the cross4 ,he humbled ,himself to bear the name and show the meekness1 and die the death of the ,lamb of ,god4 ,and what is it we now need to do8 ,how are we to be saved by this humility of ,jesus8 ,it is a solemn question1 but1 thank ,god1 the answer can be given4 ,first we must desire it above everything4 ,let us learn to pray ,god to deliver us from every vestige of pride1 for this is a cursed thing4 ,let us learn to set aside for a time other things in the ,christian life1 and begin to plead with the ,lamb of ,god day by day1 ,o ,lamb of ,god1 ,i know ,thy love1 but ,i know so little of ,thy meekness4 ,come day after day1 and lay your heart against ,his heart1 and say to ,him with strong desire3 ,jesus1 ,lamb of ,god1 give1 oh1 give me ,thyself1 with ,thy meekness and humility1 and ,he will fulfill the desire of them that fear ,him4 ,it is not enough to desire it and to pray for it2 claim and accept it as yours4 ,this humility is given you in ,christ ,jesus4 ,christ is our life4 ,what does that mean8 ,oh1 that ,god might give you and me a vision of what that means4 ,the air is our life1 and the air is everywhere1 universal4 ,we breathe without difficulty because ,god surrounds us with the air2 and is the air nearer to me than ,christ is8 ,the sun gives light to every green leaf and every blade of grass1 shining hour by hour and moment by moment4 ,and is the sun nearer to the blade of grass than ,christ is to man's soul8 ,verily1 no2 ,christ is around us on every side2 ,christ is pressing on us to enter1 and there is nothing in heaven1 or earth1 or hell1 that can keep the light of ,christ from shining into the heart that is empty and open4 ,if the windows of your room were closed with shutters1 the light could not enter2 it would be on the outside of the building1 streaming and streaming against the shutters2 but it could not enter4 ,but leave the windows without shutters1 and the light comes1 it rejoices to come in and fill the room4 ,even so1 children of ,god1 ,jesus and ,his light1 ,jesus and ,his humility1 are around you on every side1 longing to enter into your hearts4 ,come and take ,him to-day in ,his blessed meekness and gentleness4 ,do not be afraid of ,him2 ,he is the ,lamb of ,god4 ,he is so patient with you1 ,he is so kindly towards you1 ,he is so tender and loving4 ,take courage to-day and trust ,jesus to come into your heart and take possession of it4 ,and when ,he has taken possession1 there will be a life day by day of blessed fellowship with ,him1 and you will feel a necessity ever deeper for your quiet time with ,him1 and for worshiping and adoring ,him1 and for just sinking down before ,him in helplessness and humility1 and saying3 ,jesus1 ,i am nothing1 and ,thou art all4 ,it will be a blessed life1 because you will be conscious of being at the feet of ,jesus4 ,at this moment you can claim ,jesus in ,his divine humility as the life of your soul4 ,will you8 ,will you not open your heart1 and say3 ,come in2 come in8 ,come to-day1 and take ,him up afresh in this blessed power of ,his wonderful humility1 and say to ,him3 ,oh1 ,thou who didst say1 ',learn of me1 for ,i am meek and lowly in heart1 and ye shall find rest unto your souls1' my ,lord1 ,i know why it is that ,i have not the perfect life2 it is my pride1 but to-day1 come ,thou and dwell in my heart4 ,thou who didst lead even ,peter and ,john into the blessedness of ,thy heavenly humility2 ,thou wilt not refuse me4 ,lord1 here ,i am2 do ,thou1 who by ,thy wonderful humility alone canst save1 come in4 ,o ,lamb of ,god1 ,i believe in ,thee2 take possession of my heart1 and dwell in me4 ,when you have said that1 go out in quiet1 and retire1 walking gently as holding the ,lamb of ,god in your heart1 and say3 ,i have received the ,lamb of ,god2 ,he makes my heart ,his care2 ,he breathes ,his humility and dependence on ,god in me1 and so brings me to ,god4 ,his humility is my life and salvation4 ,,the ,,complete ,,surrender4 ,,viii4 ,genesis #ci3 #a-c4--;,joseph was brought down to ,egypt2 and ,potiphar1 an officer of ,pharaoh1 captain of the guard1 an ,egyptian1 bought him at the hands of the ,ishmaelites1 which had brought him down thither4 ,and the ,lord was with ,joseph1 and he was a prosperous man2 and he was in the house of his master1 the ,egyptian1 and his master saw that the ,lord was with him4 ,we have in this passage an object lesson which teaches us what ,christ is to us4 ,note3 ,joseph was a slave1 but ,god was with him so distinctly that his master could see it4 ,and his master saw the ,lord was with him1 and that the ,lord made all that he did prosper in his hands2 and ,joseph found grace in his sight1 and he served him1--that is to say1 he was his slave about his person1--and he made him overseer over his house1--that was something new4 ,joseph had been a slave1 but now he becomes a master4 ,and he made him overseer over his house1 and all that he had he put into his hands4 ,and it came to pass1 from the time that he had made him overseer in his house1 and over all that he had1 that the ,lord blessed the ,egyptian's house for ,joseph's sake1 and the blessing of the ,lord was upon all that he had in the house and in the field4 ,and he left all that he had in ,joseph's hand2 and he knew not all he had1 save the bread which he did eat4 ,we find ,joseph in two characters in the house of ,potiphar3 first as a servant and a slave1 one who is trusted and loved1 but still entirely a servant2 second1 as master4 ,potiphar made him overseer over his house and his lands1 and all that he had1 so that we read afterward that he left everything in his hands1 and he knew of nothing except the bread that came upon his table4 ,i want to call your attention to ,joseph as a type of ,christ4 ,we sometimes speak in the ,christian life1 of entire surrender1 and rightly1 and here we have a beautiful illustration of what it is4 ,first1 ,joseph was in ,potiphar's house to serve him and to help him1 and he did that1 and ,potiphar learned to trust him1 so that he said1 ,all that ,i have ,i will give into his hands4 ,now1 that is exactly what is to take place with a great many ,christians4 ,they know ,christ1 they trust ,him1 they love ,him1 but ,he is not ,master1 ,he is a sort of helper4 ,when there is trouble they come to ,him1 when they sin they ask ,him for pardon in ,his precious blood1 when they are in darkness they cry to ,him2 but often and often they live according to their own will1 and they seek help from themselves4 ,but how blessed is the man who comes and1 like ,potiphar1 says1 ,i will give up everything to ,jesus6 ,there are many who have accepted ,christ as their ,lord1 but have never yet come to the final1 absolute surrender of everything4 ,christians1 if you want perfect rest1 abiding joy1 strength to work for ,god1 oh1 come and learn from that poor heathen ,egyptian what you ought to do4 ,he saw that ,god was with ,joseph and he said1 ,i will give up my house to him4 ,oh1 learn you to do that4 ,there are some who have never yet accepted ,christ1 some who are seeking after ,him1 thirsting and hungering1 but they do not know how to find ,him4 ,let me direct your attention to four thoughts regarding this surrender to ,christ3 ,first1 its motives2 second1 its measures2 third1 its blessedness2 lastly1 its duration4 ,first of all1 its motives4 ,what moved ,potiphar to do this8 ,i think the answer is very easy3 he was a trusted servant of the king and he had the king's work to take care of1 and he very likely could not take care of his own house4 ,all his time and attention were required at the court of ,pharaoh4 ,he had his duty there2 he was in high honor2 but his own house got neglected4 ,very likely he had had other overseers1 one slave appointed to rule the others1 and perhaps that one had been unfaithful1 or dishonest1 and somehow his house was not as he would have it4 ,so he buys another slave1 just as he had formerly done1 but in this case he sees what he had never seen before4 ,there is something unusual about the man4 ,he walks so humbly1 he serves so faithfully and so lovingly1 and withal so successfully4 ,potiphar begins to look into the reason for this1 and finally concludes that ,god is with him4 ,it is a grand thing to have a man with whom ,god is1 to entrust one's business to4 ,the heathen realized this1 and between the need of his own house and what he saw in ,joseph1 he decided to make him overseer4 ,i ask you1 do not these two motives plead most urgently that you should say3 ,i will make ,jesus master over my whole being8 ,your house1 ,christian1 your spiritual life1 the dwelling1 the temple of ,god in your heart1--in what state is that8 ,is it not often like the temple of old1 in ,jerusalem1 that had been defiled and made a house of merchandise1 and afterwards a den of thieves8 ,your heart1 meant to be the home of ,jesus1 is it not often full of sin and darkness1 full of sadness1 full of vexation8 ,you have done your very best to get it changed1 and you have called in the help of man1 and the help of means2 you have used every method you could think of for getting it put right2 but it will not come right until ,he whose it is1 comes in to take charge4 ,if there is any trouble in your heart1 if you are in darkness1 or in the power of sin1 ,i bring to you the ,son of ,god1 with the promise that ,he will come in and take charge4 ,as ,potiphar took ,joseph1 will you not take ,jesus8 ,has ,he not proven ,himself worthy to be trusted8 ,come and say1 ,jesus shall have entire charge2 ,he is worthy4 ,think not only of ,his ,divine power1 but think of ,his wonderful love2 think of ,his coming from heaven to save you2 think of ,his dying on ,calvary and shedding ,his blood out of intense love for you4 ,oh1 think of it2 ,christ in heaven loves every one who is given to ,him1 and whom ,he has made a child of ,god4 ,having loved ,his own that were in the world1 ,he loved them unto the end4 ,must ,i plead in the name of the love of the crucified ,jesus2 must ,i plead with you ,christians1 and say1 ,look at ,jesus1 the ,son of ,god1 your ,redeemer1 and ask you to make ,him overseer over all8 ,give ,him charge of your temper1 your heart's affections1 your thoughts1 your whole being1 and ,he will prove ,himself worthy of it4 ,joseph had been for a time just a common slave1 and with the other slaves had served ,pharaoh4 ,alas6 many a ,christian has used ,christ for his own advancement and comfort1 just as he uses everything in the world4 ,he uses father and mother1 minister1 money1 and all else the world will give1 to comfort and make him happy2 there is danger of his using ,christ ,jesus in the same way4 ,but oh1 brethren1 this is not right4 ,you are ,his house1 and ,he has a right to dwell therein4 ,will you not come and surrender all1 and say1 ,lord ,jesus1 ,i have made ,thee overseer over all8 ,but now1 secondly1 the measure of that surrender4 ,we read in the #dth verse3 ,all that he had he put into his hands4 ,then in verse #e3 ,and it came to pass from the time that he made him overseer over all that he had--there you have it the second time--the ,lord blessed the ,egyptian's house1 and the blessing of the ,lord was upon all that he had--there the third time4 ,then in verse #f3 ,and he left all that he had--there you have the words the fourth time--in ,joseph's hand1 and he knew not all he had1 save the bread which he did eat4 ,what do ,i see here8 ,that ,potiphar actually gave everything into ,joseph's hands4 ,he made him master over his slaves4 ,all the money was put into ,joseph's hands1 for we read that ,potiphar had care of nothing4 ,when dinner was brought upon the table1 he ate of it1 and that was all he knew of what was going on in his house4 ,is not this entire surrender8--he gives up everything into the hands of ,joseph4 ,ah1 beloved ,christians1 ,i want you to ask yourselves3 ,have ,i done that8 ,you have offered more than one consecration prayer1 and you have more than once said3 ,jesus1 all ,i have ,i give to ,thee4 ,you have said it1 and meant it2 but very probably you did not realize fully what it meant4 ,with the word surrender there seems always to be a larger and more comprehensive meaning4 ,we do not succeed in carrying out our intentions1 and afterward we take back one thing and another until we have lost sight of our original intention4 ,beloved ,christians1 let ,christ ,jesus have all4 ,let ,him have your whole heart1 with its affections2 ,he ,himself loves1 with more than the love of ,jonathan4 ,let ,him have your whole heart1 saying1 ,jesus1 every fiber of my being1 ever power of my soul1 shall be devoted to ,thee4 ,he will accept that surrender4 ,he spoke a solemn word3 ,you must hate father and mother4 ,say you to-day3 ,lord ,jesus1 the love to father and mother1 to wife and child1 to brother and sister1 ,i give up to ,thee4 ,teach ,thou me how to love ,thee4 ,i have only one desire1 which is to love ,thee4 ,i want to give my whole heart to be full of ,thy love4 ,but when you have given your heart1 there is yet more to give4 ,there is the head--the brain with its thoughts4 ,i believe ,christians do not know how much they rob ,christ of in reading so much of the literature of the world4 ,they are often so occupied with their newspapers that the ,bible gets a very small place4 ,oh1 friends1 ,i beseech you bring this noble power which ,god has given you1 the power of a mind that can think heavenly1 eternal1 and infinite things1 and lay it at the feet of ,jesus1 saying1 ,lord ,jesus1 every faculty of my being ,i want to surrender to ,thee1 that ,thou shouldst teach me what to think1 and how to think1 for ,thee and ,thy ,kingdom4 ,bless ,god1 there are men who have given their intellect to ,jesus1 and it has been accepted by ,him4 ,and in this connection there is my whole outer life4 ,there is my relation to society1 my position among men1 my intercourse in my own home1 with friends and family2 there is my money1 my time1 my business2 all these should be put in the hands of ,jesus4 ,one cannot know beforehand the blessedness of this surrender1 but blessed it surely is4 ,come1 because ,he is worthy2 come because you know you can not keep things right yourself1 and make ,christ master over all you have4 ,give father and mother1 wife and child1 house and land1 and money1 all to ,jesus1 and you will find that in giving all you receive it back an hundred fold4 ,thirdly1 look at the blessing of the entire surrender4 ,you have here the remarkable words3 ,and it came to pass from the time that ,potiphar made ,joseph overseer over all that he had1 that the ,lord blessed the ,egyptian's house for ,joseph's sake1 and the blessing of the ,lord was upon all that he had in the house1 and in the field4 ,i ask you ,christians1 ,if ,god did this to that heathen man1 because he honored ,joseph2 if ,god1 for ,joseph's sake1 blessed that ,egyptian in this wonderful way1 may a ,christian not venture to say3 ,if ,i put my life into the hands of ,jesus1 ,i am sure ,god will bless all that ,i have8 ,oh1 dare to say it4 ,potiphar trusted ,joseph implicitly and absolutely1 and there was prosperity everywhere1 because ,god was with ,joseph4 ,beloved friends1 if you but surrender everything1 depend upon it1 the blessing from that time will be yours4 ,there will be a blessing within your own inner life1 and a blessing in your outer life4 ,he blessed ,potiphar in the house1 in the field1 everywhere4 ,oh1 ,christian1 what is that blessing you will get8 ,i can not tell all1 but ,i can tell you this3 if you will come to ,christ ,jesus and surrender all1 the blessing of ,god will be on all that you have4 ,there will be a blessing for your own soul4 ,thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on ,thee4 ,try that2 trust ,jesus for everything1 and trust everything to ,him1 and the blessing of ,god will come upon you--the sweet rest1 the rest of faith4 ,it is all in the hands of ,jesus2 ,he will guide you2 ,he will teach you2 ,he will work in you2 ,he will keep you2 ,he will be everything to you4 ,what a blessed rest and freedom from responsibility and from care1 because it is all in the hands of ,jesus6 ,i do not say trouble and trial will never come2 but in the midst of trial and trouble you will have the all-sufficiency of the presence of ,jesus to be your comfort1 your help1 and your guide4 ,joseph was sold by his brethren1 but he saw ,god in it1 and he was quite content4 ,christ was betrayed by ,judas1 condemned by ,caiaphas1 and given over to execution by ,pilate2 but in all that1 ,christ saw ,god1 and ,he was content4 ,give over your life1 in all its phases1 into the hands of ,jesus2 remembering that the very hairs of your head are numbered1 and not a sparrow falls to earth without the ,father's notice4 ,consent now and say3 ,i will give up everything into the hands of ,jesus4 ,whatever happens is ,his will regarding me4 ,whether ,he comes in the light or in the dark1 in the storm or on the troubled sea1 ,i will rest in that blessed assurance4 ,i give up my whole life entirely to ,him4 ,in reading the ,book of ,jonah1 we find ,god's hand in each step of ,jonah's experience4 ,it was ,god who sent the storm when ,jonah went aboard the ship1 who appointed a whale to swallow him1 who ordered the whale to cast him out2 and then afterwards it was ,god who caused the hot wind to blow when the sun was sending down its scorching rays1 until the soul of ,jonah was grieved1 and made the gourd to grow1 and sent the worm to kill the gourd1 and set a sea-wind to dry the gourd up quickly4 ,do we not thus see that every circumstance of our living1 every comfort and every trial1 comes from ,god in ,christ8 ,there is nothing can touch a hair of my head4 ,not a sharp word comes against me2 not an unexpected flurry surrounds me1 but it is all ,jesus4 ,with my life in ,his hands1 ,i need care for nothing4 ,i can be content with what ,jesus gives4 ,god blessed ,potiphar in the field2 in the visible life outside of his house2 and ,god will bless you1 that1 in your intercourse with men1 you may be a blessing2 that by your holy1 humble1 respectful1 quiet walk1 you may carry comfort2 that by your loving readiness to be a servant and a helper to all1 you may prove what the ,spirit of ,god has done within you4 ,oh1 my brother1 my sister1 you have no conception of it1--,i have not--how ,god is willing to bless the soul utterly given up to ,jesus4 ,god can delight in nothing but ,jesus4 ,god delights infinitely in ,jesus4 ,god longs to see nothing in us but ,jesus1 and if ,i give up my heart and life to ,jesus1 and say1 ,my ,god1 ,i want that ,thou shouldst see in me nothing but ,jesus1 then ,i bring to the ,father the sacrifice that is the most acceptable of all4 ,oh1 believers1 come to-day2 come out of all your troubles1 and all your self-efforts and your self-confidence1 and let the blessed ,son of ,god take possession4 ,let me direct your thoughts1 lastly1 to the duration of this surrender4 ,i want to emphasize this--because in many cases the surrender does not last4 ,some go away1 and for a time have much gladness and joy1 but it soon begins to decrease1 and in a few weeks or perhaps months is all gone4 ,others who do not lose it entirely1 complain sadly at times1 that it goes away and comes again4 ,they say3 ,my life has been very much blessed since that surrender ,i made to ,god1 but it has not always been on the same level4 ,what did ,potiphar do8 ,we read in the #dth verse3 ,he made him overseer over his house1 and all that he had he left in ,joseph's hands4 ,what a simple word6 ,he left it there4 ,and oh1 children of ,god1 if you will only get to that point and say1 ,for all eternity ,i leave it in the hands of ,jesus1 you will find what a blessing it is4 ,potiphar found now that he could do the king's business with two hands and an undivided heart4 ,i might try to rescue a drowning man by holding fast somewhere with one hand1 while ,i reached out the other hand to the man1 but it is a grand thing for a person to be able to stretch out both hands1 and that person is the one who has left all with ,jesus--all his inner life1 all his cares and troubles1 and has given himself up entirely to do the will of ,god4 ,will you leave it there8 ,i must press this1 because ,i know temptations will come4 ,one temptation will be that the feelings you had in your act of surrender will pass away2 they will not be so bright2 another1 that circumstances will tempt you4 ,beloved1 temptations will come2 ,god means it for your good4 ,every temptation brings you a blessing4 ,do understand that4 ,learn the lesson of giving up everything to ,jesus1 and letting ,jesus take charge of everything4 ,leave all with ,jesus4 ,do not think that by a surrender to-day or on any day1 however powerful1 however mighty1 things will keep right themselves4 ,you need every morning afresh1 when ,god wakes you up out of sleep1 to put your heart1 and your life1 and your house1 and your business1 into the hands of ,jesus4 ,wait on ,him1 if need be1 in silence1 or in prayer1 until ,he gives you the assurance1 ,my child1 for to-day all is safe2 ,i take charge4 ,and morning by morning ,he will renew to you the blessing1 and morning by morning you will go out from your quiet time in the consciousness1 ,to-day ,i have had fellowship with my ,king1 and it is all right4 ,jesus has taken charge4 ,and so1 day by day1 you can have grace to leave all in the hands of ,jesus4 ,in conclusion let me speak to two classes4 ,there are times when your heart is restless2 there are times when you are afraid to die4 ,there are some true believers who have perhaps never yet understood that it was their duty to give up everything to ,christ4 ,beloved fellow ,christians1 ,i come with a message from your ,father1 to come and to-day take that word into your hearts and upon your lips1 even though you do not understand it4 ,jesus1 ,i make ,thee ,master of everything and ,i will wait at ,thy feet1 that ,thou wilt show me what ,thou wouldst have me be and do4 ,do it now4 ,and let me say to believers who have done it before1 and who long with an unutterable longing to do it fully and perfectly1--,child of ,god1 you can do it1 for the ,holy ,spirit has been sent down from ,heaven for this one purpose1 to glorify ,jesus2 to glorify ,jesus in your heart1 by letting you see how perfectly ,jesus can take possession of the whole heart2 to glorify ,jesus by bringing ,him into your very life1 that your whole life may shine out with the glory of ,jesus4 ,depend upon it1 the ,father will give it to you by the ,holy ,spirit1 if you are ready4 ,oh1 come1 and let your intercourse with ,god be summed up in a simple prayer and answer--,my ,god1 as much as ,thou wilt have of me to fill with ,christ1 ,thou shalt have to-day4 ,my child1 as much of ,christ as thy heart longeth to have1 thou shalt have2 for it is ,my delight that ,my ,son be in the hearts of ,my children4 ,,dead ,,with ,,christ4 ,,ix4 ,gal4 #b3 #bj4--;,i am crucified with ,christ4 ,the ,revised ,version properly has the above text ,i have been crucified with ,christ4 ,in this connection1 let us read the story of a man who was literally crucified with ,christ4 ,we may use all the narrative of ,christ's work upon earth in the flesh as a type of ,his spiritual work4 ,let us take in this instance the story of the penitent thief1 ,luke #bc3 #ci-dc1 for ,i think we may learn from him how to live as men who are crucified with ,christ4 ,paul says3 ,i have been crucified with ,christ4 ,and again3 ,god forbid that ,i should glory1 save in the cross of our ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 through whom ,i have been crucified to the world1 and the world to me4 ,we often ask earnestly3 ,how can ,i be free from the self life8 ,the answer is1 ,get another life4 ,we often speak about the power of the ,holy ,spirit coming upon us1 but ,i doubt if we fully realize that the ,holy ,spirit is a heavenly life come to expel the selfish1 and fleshly1 and the earthly life4 ,if we want1 in very deed1 to enjoy fully the rest that there is in ,jesus1 we can only have it as ,he comes in1 in the power of ,his death1 to slay what is in us of nature1 and to take possession1 and to live ,his own life in the fullness of the ,holy ,ghost4 ,god's ,word takes us to the cross of ,christ1 and it teaches us about that cross1 two things4 ,it tells us that ,christ died for sin4 ,we understand what that means1 that in ,his atonement ,he died as ,i never die1 as ,i never can die1 as ,i never need die2 ,he died for sin and for me4 ,but what gave ,his death such power to atone8 ,it was this3 the spirit in which ,he died1 not the physical suffering1 not the external act of death1 but the spirit in which ,he died4 ,and what was that spirit8 ,he died unto sin4 ,sin had tempted ,him1 and surrounded ,him1 and had brought ,him very nigh to saying1 ,i cannot die4 ,in ,gethsemane ,he cried3 ,father1 is it not possible that the cup pass from me8 ,but ,god be praised1 ,he gave up ,his life rather than yield to sin4 ,he died to sin1 and in dying ,he conquered4 ,and now1 ,i can not die for sin like ,christ1 but ,i can and ,i must die to sin like ,christ4 ,christ died for me4 ,in that ,he stands alone4 ,christ died to sin1 and in that ,i have fellowship with ,him4 ,i have been crucified1 ,i am dead4 ,and here is the great subject to which ,i want to lead you4--,what it is to be dead with ,christ1 and how it is that ,i can practically enter into this death with ,christ4 ,we know that the great characteristic of ,christ is ,his death4 ,from eternity ,he came with the commandment of the ,father that ,he should lay down ,his life on earth4 ,he gave ,himself up to it1 and ,he set ,his face towards ,jerusalem4 ,he chose death1 and ,he lived and walked upon earth to prepare ,himself to die4 ,his death is the power of redemption2 death gave ,him ,his victory over sin2 death gave ,him ,his resurrection1 ,his new life1 ,his exaltation1 and ,his everlasting glory4 ,the great mark of ,christ is ,his death4 ,even in ,heaven1 upon the throne1 ,he stands as the ,lamb that was slain1 and through eternity they ever sing1 ,thou art worthy1 for ,thou wast slain4 ,beloved brother1 your ,boaz1 your ,christ1 your all-sufficient ,saviour1 is a ,man of whom the chief mark and the greatest glory is this3 ,he died4 ,and if the ,bride is to live with her husband as ,his wife1 then she must enter into ,his state1 and into ,his spirit1 and into ,his disposition1 and ever be as ,he is4 ,if we are to experience the full power of what ,christ can do for us1 we must learn to die with ,christ4 ,i ought not1 perhaps1 to use that expression1 ,we must learn to die with ,christ2 ,i ought1 rather1 to say1 ,we must learn that we are dead with ,christ4 ,that is a glorious thought in the #fth chapter of ,romans2 to every believer in the ,church of ,rome--not to the select ones1 or the advanced ones1 but to every believer in the ,church of ,rome1 however feeble1 ,paul writes1 ,you are dead with ,christ4 ,on the strength of that he says1 ,reckon yourselves dead unto sin4 ,what does that mean--,you are dead to sin8 ,we can not see it more clearly than by referring to ,adam4 ,christ was the second ,adam4 ,what happened in the first ,adam8 ,i died1 in the first ,adam2 ,i died to ,god2 ,i died in sin4 ,when ,i was born1 ,i had in me the life of ,adam1 which had all the characteristics of the life of ,adam after he had fallen4 ,adam died to ,god1 and ,adam died in sin1 and ,i inherit the life of ,adam1 and so ,i am dead in sin as he was1 and dead unto ,god4 ,but at the very moment ,i begin to believe in ,jesus1 ,i become united to ,christ1 the second ,adam1 and as really as ,i am united by my birth to the first ,adam1 ,i am made partaker of the life of ,christ4 ,what life8 ,that life which died unto sin on ,calvary1 and which rose again2 therefore ,god by his apostle tells us3 ,reckon yourselves indeed dead unto sin and alive unto ,god in ,christ ,jesus4 ,you are to reckon it as true1 because ,god says it--for your new nature is indeed1 in virtue of your vital union to ,christ1 actually and utterly dead to sin4 ,if we want to have the real ,christ that ,god has given us1 the real ,christ that died for us1 in the power of ,his death and resurrection1 we must take our stand here4 ,but many ,christians do not understand what the #fth chapter of the ,epistle to the ,romans teaches us4 ,they do not know that they are dead to sin4 ,they do not know it1 and therefore ,paul instructs them3 ,know ye not that as many of you as are baptized into ,christ ,jesus1 are baptized into ,his death4 ,how can we who are dead to sin in ,christ live any longer therein8 ,we have indeed the death and the life of ,christ working within us4 ,but1 alas6 most ,christians do not know this1 and therefore do not experience or practice it4 ,they need to be taught that their first need is to be brought to the recognition1 to the knowledge1 of what has taken place in ,christ on ,calvary1 and what has taken place in their becoming united to ,christ4 ,the man must begin to say1 even before he understands it1 ,in ,christ ,i am dead to sin4 ,it is a command3 ,reckon ye yourselves indeed to be dead unto sin4 ,get hold of your union to ,christ2 believe in the new nature within you1 that spiritual life which you have from ,christ1 a life that has died and been raised again4 ,a man's acts are always in accordance with his idea of his state4 ,a king acts like a king1 otherwise we say1 ,that man has forgotten his kingship1 but if a man is conscious of being a king1 he behaves like a king4 ,and so ,i cannot live the life of a true believer unless ,i am filled with a consciousness of this every day3 ,i thank ,god that ,i am dead in ,christ4 ,christ died unto sin1 and ,i am united with ,christ1 and ,christ lives in me and ,i am dead to sin4 ,what is the life ,christ lives in me8 ,ask what is the life ,adam lives in me8 ,adam lives in me the death life1 a life that has fallen under the power of sin and death1 death to ,god4 ,that life ,adam lives in me by nature as an unconverted man4 ,and ,christ1 the second ,adam1 has come to me with a new life1 and ,i now live in ,his life1 the death-life of ,christ4 ,as long as ,i do not know it1 ,i can not act according to it1 though it be in me4 ,praise ,god1 when a man begins to see what it is1 and begins in obedience to say1 ,i will do what ,god's ,word says2 ,i am dead1 ,i reckon myself dead1 he enters upon a new life4 ,on the strength of ,god's everlasting ,word1 and your union to ,christ1 and the great fact of ,calvary1 reckon1 know yourself as dead indeed unto sin4 ,a man must see this truth2 this is the first step4 ,the second is--he must accept it in faith4 ,and what then8 ,when he accepts it in faith1 then there comes in him a struggle1 and a painful experience1 for that faith is still very feeble1 and he begins to ask1 ,but why1 if ,i am dead to sin1 do ,i commit so much sin8 ,and the answer ,god's ,word gives is simply this3 ,you do not allow the power of that death to be applied by the ,holy ,spirit4 ,what we need is to understand that the ,holy ,spirit came from ,heaven1 from the glorified ,jesus1 to bring ,his death and ,his life into us4 ,the two are inseparably connected4 ,that ,christ died1 ,he died unto sin1 and that ,he liveth1 ,he liveth unto ,god4 ,the death and the life in ,him are inseparable2 and even so in us the life to ,god in ,christ is inseparably connected with the death to sin4 ,and that is what the ,holy ,ghost will teach us and work in us4 ,if ,i have accepted ,christ in faith by the ,holy ,ghost1 and yield myself to ,him1 ,christ every day keeps possession1 and reveals the full power of my fellowship in ,his death and life in my heart4 ,to some this comes undoubtedly in one moment of supreme power and blessing2 all at once they see and accept it1 and enter in1 and there is death to sin as a ,divine experience4 ,it is not that the tendency to evil is rooted out4 ,no2 but the power of ,christ's death keeps from sin1 and destroys the power of sin2 the power of ,christ's death can be manifested in the ,holy ,spirit's unceasingly mortifying the deeds of the body4 ,some one asks me if there is still growth needed4 ,undoubtedly4 ,by the ,holy ,spirit a man can now begin to live and grow1 deeper and deeper1 into the fellowship of ,christ's death4 ,new things are discovered by him in spheres of which he never thought4 ,a man may at times be filled with the ,holy ,ghost1 and yet there may be great imperfections in him4 ,why8 ,for this reason3 because his heart1 perhaps1 had not been fully prepared by a complete discovery of sin4 ,there may be pride1 or self-consciousness1 or forwardness1 or other qualities of this nature which he has never noticed4 ,the ,holy ,spirit does not always cast these out at once4 ,no4 ,there are different ways of entering into the blessed life4 ,one man enters into the blessed life with the idea of power for service2 another with the idea of rest from worry and weariness2 another with the idea of deliverance from sin4 ,in all these aspects there is something limited1 and therefore every believer is to give himself up after he knows the power of ,christ's death1 and say continually3 ,lord ,jesus1 let the power of ,thy death work through1 let it penetrate my whole being4 ,as the man gives himself unreservedly up1 he will begin to bear the marks of a crucified man4 ,the apostle says3 ,i have been crucified1 and he lives like a crucified man4 ,what are the marks of a crucified man8 ,the first is1 deep1 absolute humility4 ,christ humbled ,himself1 and became obedient unto death1 even the death of the cross4 ,when the death to sin begins to work mightily1 that is one of its chief and most blessed proofs4 ,it breaks a man down1 down1 and the great longing of his heart is1 ,oh1 that ,i could get deeper down before my ,god1 and be nothing at all1 that the life of ,christ might be exalted4 ,i deserve nothing but the cursed cross2 ,i give myself over to it4 ,humility is one of the great marks of a crucified man4 ,another mark is impotence1 helplessness4 ,when a man hangs on the cross1 he is utterly helpless1 he can do nothing4 ,as long as we ,christians are strong1 and can work1 or struggle1 we do not get into the blessed life of ,christ2 but when a man says1 ,i am a crucified man1 ,i am utterly helpless1 every breath of life and strength must come from my ,jesus1 then we learn what it is to sink into our own impotence1 and say1 ,i am nothing4 ,still another mark of crucifixion is restfulness4 ,yes4 ,christ was crucified1 and went down into the grave1 and we are crucified and buried with ,him4 ,there is no place of rest like the grave2 a man can do nothing there1 ,my flesh shall rest in hope1 said ,david1 and said the ,messiah4 ,yes1 and when a man goes down into the grave of ,jesus1 it means this3 that he just cries out1 ,i have nothing but ,god1 ,i trust ,god2 ,i am waiting upon ,god2 my flesh rests in ,him2 ,i have given up everything1 that ,i may rest1 waiting upon what ,god is to do to me4 ,remember1 the crucifixion1 and the death1 and the burial are inseparably one4 ,and remember the grave is the place where the mighty resurrection power of ,god will be manifested4 ,and remember those precious words in the #aath of ,john3 ,said ,i not unto thee--when did ,christ say that8 ,it was at the grave of ,lazarus--that if thou believest1 thou shalt see the glory of ,god8 ,where shall ,i see the glory of ,god most brightly8 ,beside the grave4 ,go down into death believing1 and the glory of ,god will come upon thee1 and fill thy heart4 ,dear friends1 we want to die4 ,if we are to live in the rest1 and the peace1 and the blessedness of our great ,boaz2 if we are to live a life of joy and of fruitfulness1 of strength and of victory1 we must go down into the grave with ,christ1 and the language of our life must be3 ,i am a crucified man4 ,god be praised1 though ,i have nothing but sin in myself1 ,i have an everlasting ,jesus1 with ,his death and ,his life1 to be the life of my soul4 ,how can ,i enter into this fellowship of the cross8 ,we find an illustration in the story of the penitent thief4 ,thomas said1 before ,christ's death1 ,let us go and abide with ,him4 ,and ,peter said1 ,lord1 ,i am ready to go with ,thee to prison1 or to death4 ,but the disciples all failed1 and our ,lord took a man who was the offscouring of the earth1 and he hung him upon the cross of ,calvary beside ,himself1 and ,he said to ,peter1 and to all3 ,i will let you see what it is to die with ,me4 ,and ,he says that word to-day1 to the weakest and the humblest2 if you are longing to know what it is to enter into death with ,jesus1 come and look at the penitent thief4 ,and what do we see there8 ,first of all1 we see there the state of a heart prepared to die with ,christ4 ,we see in that penitent thief1 a humble1 whole-hearted confession of sin4 ,there he hung upon the cursed tree1 and the multitudes were blaspheming that man beside him1 but he was not ashamed publicly to make confession3 ,i am dying a death that ,i have deserved2 ,i am suffering justly2 this cross is what ,i have deserved4 ,here is one of the reasons why the ,church of ,christ enters so little into the death of ,christ2 men do not want to believe that the curse of ,god is upon everything in them that has not died with ,christ4 ,people talk about the curse of sin1 but they do not understand that the whole nature has been infected by sin1 and that the curse is on everything4 ,my intellect1 has that been defiled by sin8 ,terribly1 and the curse of sin is on it1 and therefore my intellect must go down into the death4 ,ah1 ,i believe that the ,church of ,christ suffers more to-day from trusting in intellect1 in sagacity1 in culture1 and in mental refinement1 than from almost anything else4 ,the ,spirit of the world comes in1 and men seek by their wisdom1 and by their knowledge1 to help the ,gospel1 and they rob it of its crucifixion mark4 ,christ directed ,paul to go and preach the ,gospel of the cross1 but to do it not with wisdom of words4 ,the curse of sin is on all that is of nature4 ,if there be a minister who has delighted in preaching1 who has done his very best1 who has given his very best in the way of talent and of thought1 and who asks1 ,must that go down into the grave8 ,i say1 ,yes1 my brother1 the whole man must be crucified4 ,and so with the heart's affection4 ,what is more beautiful than the love of a child to his mother8 ,in that lovely nature there is something unsanctified1 and it must be given up to die4 ,god will raise it from the dead and give it back again1 sanctified and made alive unto ,god4 ,so ,i might go through the whole of our life4 ,people often say to me3 ,but has ,god made all things so beautiful1 and is it not right that we should enjoy them8 ,are not ,his gifts all good8 ,i answer1 yes1 but remember what it says2 they are good1 if sanctified by the ,word of ,god and prayer4 ,the curse of sin is on them2 the blight of sin is on everything most beautiful1 and it takes much of ,god's ,word1 and much of prayer to sanctify them4 ,it is very hard to give up a thing to the death1 and it is hardest of all to give up my life to the death1 and ,i never will until ,i have learned that everything about that life is stamped by sin1 and let it go down into the death as the only way to have it quickened and sanctified4 ,the penitent thief confessed his sin1 and that he deserved death4 ,then1 next1 he had faith in the almighty power of ,christ4 ,a wonderful faith4 ,it has no parallel in the ,bible4 ,there hangs the cursed malefactor with ,jesus of ,nazareth1 and he dares speak1 and say3 ,i am dying here1 under the just curse of my sins1 but ,i believe ,thou canst take me into ,thy heart1 and remember me when ,thou comest into ,thy ,kingdom4 ,oh1 that we might learn to believe in the almighty power of ,christ6 ,that man believed that ,christ was a ,king1 and had a ,kingdom1 and that ,he would take him up in ,his arms1 and in ,his heart1 and remember him when ,he came into ,his ,kingdom4 ,he believed that1 and believing that1 he died4 ,brother1 you and ,i need to take time to come to a much larger and deeper faith in the power of ,christ1 that the almighty ,christ will indeed take us in ,his arms and carry us through this death life1 revealing the power of ,his death in us4 ,i cannot live it without personal contact with ,christ every hour of the day4 ,christ must do it2 ,christ can do it4 ,come therefore and say3 ,is ,he not the ,almighty ,one2 did ,he not come from the throne of ,god2 did ,he not prove ,his omnipotence1 and did the ,father not prove it when ,he rose from the dead8 ,would you be afraid1 now that ,christ is on the throne1 of doing what the malefactor did when ,christ was upon the cross1 and entrusting yourself to ,him to live as one dead with ,him8 ,christ will carry you through the very process ,he went through2 will make ,his death work in you every day of your life4 ,i note one thing more in the penitent thief--his prayer4 ,there was his conviction of sin1 and his faith1 but there was1 further1 the utterance of his faith in prayer4 ,he turned to ,jesus4 ,remember that the whole world1 with perhaps the exception of ,mary and the women1 was turned against ,christ that day4 ,of the whole world of men as far as ,i know1 there was but that one praying to ,christ4 ,do not wait to see what others do2 if you wait for that1--alas6 ,i desire to say it in love and tenderness1--you will not find much company in the ,church of ,christ4 ,pray incessantly3 ,lord ,christ1 let the power of ,thy death come into me4 ,for ,god's sake1 pray the prayer4 ,if you want to live the life of ,heaven1 there must be death to sin in the power of ,jesus4 ,there must be personal entrustment of the soul into ,his death to sin1 personal acceptance of ,jesus to do the mighty work4 ,we have seen what the preparation is on the part of this man2 let us look1 secondly1 at how ,christ met him4 ,he met him1 you know1 with that wonderful promise1 with its three wonderful parts3 ,to-day shalt thou be with me in ,paradise4 ,a promise of fellowship with ,christ1--,thou shalt be with me2 a promise of rest in eternity1 in the ,paradise from which sin had cast man out1--,with me in ,paradise2 a promise of immediate blessing1--,to-day shalt thou be with ,me4 ,with that three-fold blessing ,jesus comes to you and me1 and ,he says3 ,believer1 are you longing to live the ,paradise life1 where ,i give souls to eat of the ,tree of ,life1 in the ,paradise of ,god1 day by day8 ,are you longing for that uninterrupted communion with ,god that there was in ,paradise before ,adam fell8 ,are you longing for perfect fellowship with me1 longing to live where ,i am living1 in the love of the ,father8 ,to-day1 to-day2 even as the ,holy ,ghost says3 ',to-day shalt thou be with me6' ,longest thou for ,me8 ,i long more for thee4 ,longest thou for fellowship8 ,i long unceasingly for thy fellowship1 for ,i need thy love1 my child1 to satisfy my heart4 ,nothing can prevent ,my receiving thee into fellowship4 ,i have taken possession of ,heaven for thee1 as the ,great ,high ,priest1 that thou mightest live the ,heavenly life1 that thou mightest have access into the holiest of all and an abiding dwelling place there4 ,to-day1 if thou wilt1 thou shalt be with me in ,paradise4 ,thank ,god1 the ,jesus of the penitent thief is my ,jesus4 ,thank ,god1 the cross of the penitent thief is my cross4 ,i must confess my sinfulness if ,i want to come into the closest communion with my blessed ,lord4 ,there was not a man upon earth during the thirty-three years of ,christ's life that had such wonderful fellowship with the ,son of ,god1 as the penitent thief1 for with the ,son of ,god he entered the glory4 ,what made him so separate from others8 ,he was on the cross with ,jesus and entered ,paradise with ,him4 ,and if ,i live upon the cross with ,jesus1 the ,paradise life shall be mine every day4 ,and now1 if ,jesus gives me that promise1 what have ,i to do8 ,let go4 ,when a ship is moored alongside the dock1 with everything ready for the start and all standing on the quay1 the last bell is rung and the order is given1 ,let go4 ,then the last rope is loosened1 and the steamer moves4 ,there are things that tie us to the earth1 to the flesh-life1 and to the self-life2 but to-day the message comes3 ,if thou wouldst die with ,jesus1 let go4 ,thou needst not understand all4 ,it may not be perfectly clear2 the heart may appear dull1 but never mind2 ,jesus carried that penitent thief through death to life4 ,the thief did not know where he was going1 he did not know what was to happen1 but ,jesus1 the mighty conqueror1 took him in ,his arms1 and landed him1 in his ignorance1 in ,paradise4 ,oh1 ,i have sometimes said in my soul1 bless ,god for the ignorance of that penitent thief4 ,he knew nothing about what was going to happen1 but he trusted ,christ2 and if ,i can not understand all about this crucifixion with ,christ1 and the death to sin1 and the life to ,god1 and the glory that comes into the heart1 never mind1 ,i trust my ,lord's promise1 ,i cast myself helpless into ,his arms1 ,i maintain my position on the cross4 ,given up to ,jesus1 to die with ,him1 ,i can trust ,him to carry me through4 ,shall we not each one take the blessed opportunity of doing what ,ruth did when she1 in obedience to the advice of her mother1 just cast herself at the feet of the great ,boaz1 the ,redeemer1 to be ,his8 ,shall we not come into personal contact with ,jesus1 and shall not each one of us just speak before the world these simple words3 ,lord1 here is this life2 there is much in it still of self1 and sinfulness1 and self-will1 but ,i come to ,thee2 ,i long to enter fully into ,thy death2 ,i long to know fully that ,i have been crucified with ,thee2 ,i long to live ,thy life every day4 ,then say3 ,lord ,jesus1 ,i have seen ,thy glory1 what ,thou didst for the penitent one at ,thy side on the cross2 ,i am trusting ,thee1 that ,thou wilt do it for me4 ,lord1 ,i cast myself into ,thy arms4 ,,joy ,,in ,,the ,,holy ,,ghost4 ,x4 ,romans #ad3 #ag4--;,for the ,kingdom of ,god is not meat and drink1 but righteousness1 and peace1 and joy in the ,holy ,ghost4 ,in this text we have the earthly revelation of the work of the ,trinity4 ,the ,kingdom of ,god is righteousness2 that represents the work of the ,father4 ,the foundations of ,his throne are justice and judgment4 ,then comes the work of the ,son3 ,he is our peace1 our ,shiloh1 our rest4 ,the ,kingdom of ,god is peace2 not only the peace of pardon for the past1 but the peace of perfect assurance as to the future4 ,not only the work of atonement is finished1 but the work of sanctification is finished in ,christ1 and ,i may receive and enjoy what is prepared for me4 ,the new man has been created1 and ,i may in ,him live out my life2 if a kingdom is established in righteousness1 if the rule is perfect1 there can be perfect rest4 ,if there be peace1 no war from without1 and no civil dissension within1 a nation can be happy and prosperous4 ,and so there comes here1 after righteousness and peace1 the joy1 the blessed happiness in which a man can live2 ,the ,kingdom of ,god is righteousness and peace1 and joy in the ,holy ,ghost4 ,may we regard this joy of the ,holy ,ghost1 not only as a beautiful thing to admire1 not only as a thing to have beautiful thoughts about1 but as a blessing that we are going to claim4 ,we often see a fruiterer's or confectioner's shop1 with beautiful fruit or cake temptingly displayed in the window4 ,there is a great pane of plate glass before it1 and the hungry little boys stand there and look1 and long1 but they cannot reach it4 ,if you were to say to one1 ,now1 little boy1 take that fruit1 he would look at you in surprise4 ,he has learned that there is something between4 ,if he had never known of glass he might attempt it4 ,the plate glass is sometimes so clear that even a grown man might for a moment be deceived and stretch out his hand4 ,but he soon finds there is something invisible between him and the fruit4 ,this represents exactly the life of many ,christians2 they see1 but they cannot take4 ,and what now is this invisible pane of plate glass1 that hinders my taking the beautiful things ,i see8 ,it is nothing but the self-life2 ,i see divine things but cannot reach them1 the self-life is the invisible plate glass4 ,we are willing1 we are working1 we are striving1 and yet we are holding back something2 we are afraid to give up everything to ,god4 ,we do not know what the consequences may be4 ,we have not yet comprehended that ,god and ,christ ,jesus are worth everything4 ,whatever is told us of the blessed life of peace and joy1 we say1 ,praise ,god2 ,god's ,word is true2 ,i believe the ,word2 and yet1 day by day1 we stand back4 ,when some one says1 ,take it1 we say1 ,i can't take it2 there is something between4 ,would we were willing to give up the self-life2 would we had the courage to give up to-day1 and let the joy of the ,holy ,ghost be our religion4 ,that is the religion ,god has prepared for us2 that is the religion we can claim2 not only righteousness1 not only peace1 but the joy of the ,holy ,ghost4 ,that is the ,kingdom of ,god4 ,what is this joy8 ,first of all1 it is the joy of the presence of ,jesus4 ,we are often inclined to speak most of two other things1 the power for sanctification1 and the power for service4 ,but ,i find there is a thing more important than either of those two1 and that is that the ,holy ,ghost came from ,heaven to be the abiding presence of ,christ in ,his disciples1 in the ,church1 and in the heart of every believer4 ,the ,lord ,jesus was going away1 and ,his disciples were very sad2 their hearts was sorrowful2 but ,he said to them1 ,i will come back again1 and ,i will come to you4 ,your hearts shall rejoice1 and your joy no man shall take from you4 ,what took place with them1 may take place with us too4 ,the ,holy ,spirit is given to make the presence of ,jesus an abiding reality1 a continual experience4 ,and what was that joy that no man could ever touch8 ,it was the joy of ,pentecost4 ,and what was ,pentecost8 ,the coming of the ,lord ,jesus in the ,holy ,ghost to dwell with ,his disciples4 ,while ,jesus was with ,his disciples on earth1 ,he could not get into their hearts in the right way4 ,they loved ,him1 but they could not take in ,his teaching1 they could not partake of ,his disposition1 and they could not receive ,his very spirit into their being4 ,but when ,he had ascended to ,heaven1 ,he came back in the ,spirit to dwell in their hearts4 ,it is this alone that will help us to go1 the minister to his congregation with its difficulties1 the business man to his counter1 the mother to her large family with its care1 the worker to her ,bible class4 ,it is this only that will help us to feel1 ,i can conquer1 ,i can live in the rest of ,god4 ,why8 ,because ,i have the almighty ,jesus with me every day4 ,with ,god's people1 there seems to be one hindrance1 they do not know their ,saviour4 ,they do not realize that this blessed ,christ is an ever present1 all-pervading1 in-dwelling ,christ1 who wants to take charge of their entire lives4 ,they do not know1 they do not believe that ,he is an ,almighty ,christ1 and ready in the midst of any difficulties and any circumstances to be their keeper and their ,god4 ,this is absolutely true4 ,many ,christians are asked as to how one may have the joy unspeakable1 the joy that nothing can take away1 the joy of the friendship and nearness and love of ,jesus filling his heart4 ,we complain that the rush of competition is so terrible that we can not get time for private prayer4 ,brother1 the ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 if ,he comes to you as a brother and a friend and an abiding guest1 can give your heart the joy of the ,holy ,ghost1 so that business will take its right place under your feet4 ,your heart is too holy to have it filled with business2 let the business be in the head and under the feet1 but let ,christ have the whole heart1 and ,he will keep the whole life4 ,our glorious1 exalted1 almighty1 ever present ,christ6 why is it that you and ,i can not trust ,him fully1 perfectly to do ,his work8 ,shall we not say before ,god that we do trust ,him1 that we will trust ,christ to be to us every moment all that we can desire8 ,on the ,cross of ,calvary ,christ was all alone1 and you believe ,he did a perfect and a blessed work2 and ,christ in ,heaven is all alone1 as high priest and intercessor1 and you trust ,him for ,his work there4 ,but1 praise ,god6 it is equally true1 ,christ in the heart is able all alone to keep it all the days4 ,may it please ,god to reveal to ,his children the nearness of ,christ standing and knocking at the door of every heart1 ready to come in and rest forever there and to lead the soul into ,his rest4 ,we all know what the power of joy is2 we know there is nothing so attractive as joy1 there is nothing can help a man to bear and endure so much as joy2 we know that the ,lord ,jesus ,himself for the joy that was set before ,him endured the cross4 ,one is not living aright if he is living a sighing1 trembling1 doubting life4 ,come to-day and believe the joy of the ,holy ,ghost is meant for you4 ,does not the ,scripture say1 ,whom not having seen we love2 in whom1 though now ye see ,him not1 yet believing ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory4 ,do you not believe that this blessed1 adorable1 inconceivably beautiful ,son of ,god1 the delight of the ,father1--do you not believe that this ,son of ,god could fill your heart with delight day and night1 if ,he were always present8 ,and do you not believe that ,he loves you more than a bridegroom loves his bride8 ,do you not believe that1 having bought you with ,his blood1 ,jesus is longing for you8 ,he needs you to satisfy ,his heart of love4 ,begin to believe with your whole heart1 ,the joy of the ,holy ,ghost is my portion1 for the ,holy ,ghost secures to me without interruption the presence and the love of ,jesus4 ,but secondly1 there is the joy of deliverance from sin4 ,the ,holy ,ghost comes to sanctify us4 ,christ is our sanctification1 and the ,holy ,ghost comes to communicate ,him to us1 to work out all that is in ,christ and to reproduce it in us4 ,let us remember that in the sight of ,god there is something more than work4 ,there is ,christlikeness--the likeness and the life of ,christ in us4 ,that is what ,god wants2 that will fit us for work4 ,god asks not that ,christ should live in us as separate persons2 temples full of filthy1 impure1 foul creatures1 with ,christ hidden away somewhere there1--that is not the intention of ,god1 but ,he wants ,christ so formed in us that we are one with ,christ1 and that in our thinking1 feeling and living1 the image of ,his blessed ,son is manifest before ,him4 ,the ,holy ,spirit is given to sanctify us4 ,my brother1 are you willing to be sanctified from every sin1 be that sin great or small8 ,i am not asking1 do you feel that you have the power to conquer it8 ,i am not even asking1 do you feel the power to cast it out8 ,it may be that you feel no power2 that won't hinder if you are willing4 ,i can not cast out sin1 but ,i can get the ,almighty ,christ by the ,holy ,spirit to do it1 and it is my work to say to ,christ1 ,there is the sin1 there is the evil thing1 ,i lay it at ,thy feet1 ,i cast it there1 ,i cast it into ,thy very bosom4 ,lord1 ,i am ready to cut off the right hand1 anything1 only deliver me from it4 ,then ,christ will cast out the evil spirit and give deliverance4 ,the ,spirit of ,god is a holy spirit and ,his work is to make free from the power of sin and death4 ,and if you want to live in the joy of the ,holy ,ghost1 the question comes3 ,are you willing to surrender everything that is sinful1 even what appears good1--but has the stain of sin on it8 ,you may be involved in relationships that make your life very difficult4 ,a pastor with his people maybe brought into very difficult relationships2 or a business man with his partner or those with whom he has to associate1 may be in an exceedingly trying position4 ,but is not the blessed ,lamb of ,god worth it all8 ,what is the ,christ worth to you8 ,the question was once asked the disciples1 ,what think ye of ,christ8 ,i ask1 ,what is ,christ worth to you8 ,and ,i beseech you1 whatever prospective difficulties there may be1 and whatever perplexities surround you1 take the whole world to-day and cast it at ,his feet4 ,to have ,him is worth any difficulty2 to have ,him will be the solution of every difficulty4 ,there are not only such external1 manifest difficulties and perplexities1 there are a thousand little things that come in our life and that often disturb us1 temptations to unloving feelings1 and sharp words1 and hasty judgments4 ,oh1 come1 and believe that the ,holy ,spirit1 the sanctifier1 can come in and rule1 and give grace to pass through all without sinning1 and you shall know what the joy of the ,holy ,ghost is4 ,our body1 we read in #ast ,corinthians1 is the temple of the ,holy ,ghost4 ,it is to be holy in things like eating and drinking4 ,how often a ,christian comes to the consciousness that he takes or seeks too much enjoyment in that eating1 eating for pleasure1 with no self-denial or self-sacrifice in his feeding the body6 ,how often we tempt one another to eat1 and how often the believer forgets that this body is the very secret temple of the ,holy ,ghost and that every mouthful we eat and drink must be for the glory of ,god in such a way as to be perfectly well pleasing to ,him6 ,beloved1 ,i bring you a message3 ,there is access for you into the rest of ,god1 and the ,holy ,spirit is given to bring you in1 and the ,holy ,spirit will fill your heart with the unutterable joy of ,christ's presence2 and with the joy of deliverance from sin1 of victory over sin2 the unutterable joy of knowing that you are doing ,god's will and are pleasing in ,his sight2 the unutterable joy of knowing that ,he is sanctifying and keeping the temple for ,christ to dwell in4 ,believers1 the joy of the ,holy ,ghost1 the joy of that holiness of ,god1 is ,his blessedness1 ,his purity1 ,his perfection1 that nothing can mar or stain or disturb4 ,the ,holy ,ghost waits to bring and to manifest it in our lives4 ,he wants to come so into our hearts that we shall live1 as ,holy ,ghost men1 the sanctified life1 with the sanctifying power of ,jesus running through our whole beings4 ,my third thought is3 the joy of the ,holy ,ghost is the joy of the love of the saints4 ,the ,holy ,ghost was not given to any man on the day of ,pentecost separate from the others2 ,he came and filled the whole company4 ,we know how much division and separation and pride there had been among them1 but on that day the ,holy ,ghost so filled their hearts that we find it was afterward said3 ,behold how these men love one another4 ,there was a love in the primitive church that the very heathen noticed1 and could not understand4 ,why was that8 ,the ,holy ,spirit is the bond of union between the ,father and ,son2 and that bond is love4 ,the ,holy ,spirit is just the love of ,god come to dwell in the heart4 ,when ,he dwells with me and my brother we learn to love each other4 ,though ,i be unloving naturally1 and though ,i have very little grace1 if the heart of my brother is full of the ,holy ,spirit he loves me through it all4 ,you know love is a wonderful thing4 ,as long as a man tries to love it is not real love1 but when real love comes1 the more opposition it meets the more it triumphs1 for the more it can exercise itself and perfect itself1 the more it rejoices4 ,take a mother with a son dishonoring her4 ,how her love follows him6 ,when she sees that he has fallen deeper than ever before1 how the dear mother heart only loves him the more intensely through all the wretchedness6 ,does not the ,scripture say1 ,if ,he gave ,his life for us1 we are bound to give our life for the brethren8 ,the ,holy ,spirit comes as a spirit of love1 and if you want to know the joy of the ,holy ,ghost1 and want ,him to lead you into the rest of ,god and keep you there1 beware above everything on earth or in hell of being unloving4 ,one sharp word to your brother or sister brings a cloud upon you without your knowing it4 ,people are so accustomed to talk just as they like about each other that they say sharp and unkind and unloving things1 and when a cloud comes in consequence they cannot understand it4 ,if there is one thing that grieves ,god1 if there is one thing that hinders the ,spirit--the fruit of the ,spirit is love--it is the want of lovingness4 ,if you want to live in the joy of the ,holy ,ghost make your covenant with ,god4 ,but1 you say1 there is a ,christian man who makes me so impatient2 he does trouble me and vex me so with his stupidity4 ,and there are those worldly men2 how they have tempted me in times past and done me harm6 ,and there is that business man who is trying to ruin me4 ,take them all1 and your own wife and children and every one around you and say1 ,i understand it1 love is rest1 and rest is love4 ,god resteth in ,his love4 ,love is rest and rest is love1 and where there is no love the rest must be disturbed4 ,and let us say to-day1 ,i see what the joy is2 it is the joy of always loving1 it is the joy of losing my own life in love to others4 ,in connection with humility1 some one asks1 ,how about that text1 ',in honor preferring one another8' ,when a soul comes into perfect humility before ,god it becomes nothing1 and ,god becomes all in all4 ,i am nothing4 ,there is no self to be affronted2 ,i have said before ,god3 ,i am nothing2 it is only ,thy life and light that shines4 ,the honor is ,thine1 and nothing may touch me but what is against the glory of my ,god4 ,beloved1 are you living in the joy of the ,holy ,ghost8 ,come and accept a blessing and give yourself up to live a life of humility in which you are nothing1 and a life of love like ,christ's in which you only live for your fellow-men1 for the kingdom of ,god is the joy of the ,holy ,ghost4 ,my last thought is that the joy of the ,holy ,ghost is the joy of working for ,god4 ,the joy of the presence of ,jesus1 the joy of deliverance from sin1 the joy of love for the brethren1 and then the joy of working for ,god4 ,some of us have at times felt what an incomprehensible thing it is that the everlasting ,god should work through us2 and we have said1 ,lord1 what is this1 that ,thou the ,almighty ,one dost work in me and through me1 a vile worm by nature8 ,it is a mystery that passeth knowledge1 and yet it is so true4 ,the joy of the ,holy ,ghost comes when a man gives himself up to the ,christlike work of carrying the love of ,god to men4 ,let us seek the perishing1 let us live and die for souls1 let us live and die that our fellow-men may be reclaimed and brought back to their ,god4 ,there is no joy like hearing the joy-song of a new-born soul4 ,but yes1 there is another joy that may be as deep4 ,even if ,god does not give me the blessing of hearing the newborn soul sing its song1 ,i may have the joy1 the sympathy with ,jesus in ,his rejected life1 and the assurance that the ,father looks with good pleasure on me4 ,when ,i think of the thousands of believers in the ,christian world and then think of the heathen world1 the cry comes up in my heart3 ,what are we doing8 ,ah1 we need to be crying to ,god day and night1 ,lord ,god1 wake us up4 ,lord ,god1 let the ,holy ,spirit burn within us4 ,are we the true successors of ,jesus ,christ8 ,are we indeed the followers and successors of ,christ who went all the way to ,calvary to give ,his blood for men8 ,do let us remember the joy of the ,holy ,ghost is the joy of working for ,god in ,christ4 ,i believe that ,god has new ways and new leadings and new power for ,his people1 if they will only wait on ,him4 ,but what most of us do is this3 we thank ,god for all ,he has given1 we look at all the ways of working we have1 and we say that we will try to do our work better4 ,but oh1 if we had a sense of the need1 if we had any sense1 by the vision of the ,holy ,ghost1 of the state of the millions around us1 ,i am sure we would fall on our faces before ,god and say1 ,god help me to something new4 ,oh that every fiber of my being may be taken possession of for this great work with ,god6 ,the great need is that all ,christians should consecrate themselves wholly to ,god for ,his work4 ,may ,god help us to know what is the joy of the ,holy ,ghost4 ,concluding1 ,i ask again3 ,do you believe that it is possible for the ,lord ,jesus1 our ,shiloh1 of whom ,jacob prophesied1 our ,joshua1 our glorious ,king and ,high ,priest1--do you believe it is possible for ,christ ,jesus to bring you to-day into the rest of ,god8 ,remember that word in ,hebrews1 ,even as the ,holy ,ghost saith1 to-day4 ,to-day1 summon up courage and take up your ministry1 and take up your business1 and take up your surroundings1 and take up your natural temperament1 and take up your home1 and take up your life for the days to come upon earth1 and say1 ,i do not understand it1 ,i know not what will come1 but one thing ,i know1 ,i do absolutely give everything into the hands of the crucified ,lamb of ,god2 ,he shall have me in my entirety4 ,and oh1 remember1 beloved1 that ,christ will be to you more than you can think or understand1 more than you can ask or desire4 ,come1 let us cast ourselves into those blessed1 loving arms1 and let us believe even now that our ,joshua leads us into the rest of ,god1 the rest in which we are saved from self-care and self-seeking and self-trusting and self-loving1 the rest in which we do not think of ourselves1 but where ,he who is almighty and omnipresent is always going to be with us and is always going to work within us4 ,and let us when we have done that1 claim the promise1 that as we have sought first the kingdom and ,god's righteousness1 all things shall be added unto us4 ,beloved1 the kingdom of ,god is within you1 and it is righteousness and peace and joy in the ,holy ,ghost4 ,come1 let us claim it even now in simple1 childlike1 humble faith4 ,,triumph ,,of ,,faith4 ,,xi4 ,john #d3 #ej4--;,and the man believed the word that ,jesus had spoken unto him4 ,let me quote from the ,gospel according to ,st4 ,john1 the #dth chapter1 beginning at the #dfth verse3 ,so ,jesus came again into ,cana of ,galilee1 where ,he made the water wine4 ,and there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at ,capernaum4 ,when he heard that ,jesus was come up out of ,judea into ,galilee1 he went unto ,him1 and besought ,him that ,he would come down and heal his son2 for he was at the point of death4 ,then said ,jesus unto him1 ,except ye see signs and wonders1 ye will not believe4 ,there you have the word believe the first time4 ,the nobleman saith unto ,him1 ,sir1 come down ere my child die4 ,jesus saith unto him1 ,go thy way2 thy son liveth4 ,and the man believed the word that ,jesus had spoken unto him1 and he went his way4 ,there you have that word the second time4 ,and as he was now going down1 his servants met him1 and told him1 saying1 ,thy son liveth4 ,then inquired he of them the hour when he began to amend4 ,and they said unto him1 ,yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him4 ,so the father knew that it was at the same hour1 in the which ,jesus said unto him1 ,thy son liveth2 and himself believed1 and his whole house4 ,there you have the word faith4 ,this story has often been used to illustrate the different steps of faith in the spiritual life4 ,it was this use made of it in an address that brought the sainted ,canon ,battersby into the full enjoyment of rest4 ,he had been a most godly man1 but had lived the life of failure4 ,he saw in the story what it was to rest on the ,word and trust the saving power of ,jesus1 and from that night he was a changed man4 ,he went home to testify of it1 and under ,god1 he was allowed to originate the ,keswick ,convention4 ,let me point out to you the three aspects of faith which we have here3 first1 faith seeking2 then1 faith finding2 and then1 faith enjoying4 ,or1 still better3 faith struggling2 faith resting2 faith triumphing4 ,first of all1 faith struggling4 ,here is a man1 a heathen1 a nobleman1 who has heard about ,christ4 ,he has a dying son at ,capernaum1 and in his extremity leaves his home1 and walks some six or seven hours away to ,cana of ,galilee4 ,he has heard of the ,prophet1 possibly1 as one who has made water wine2 he has heard of ,his other miracles round ,capernaum1 and he has a certain trust that ,jesus will be able to help him4 ,he goes to ,him1 and his prayer is that the ,lord will come down to ,capernaum and heal his son4 ,christ said to him1 ,except ye see signs and wonders1 ye will not believe4 ,he saw that the nobleman wanted ,him to come and stand beside the child4 ,this man had not the faith of the centurion--,only speak a word4 ,he had faith4 ,it was faith that came from hearsay1 and it was faith that did1 to a certain extent1 hope in ,christ2 but it was not the faith in ,christ's power such as ,christ desired4 ,still ,christ accepted and met this faith4 ,after the ,lord had thus told him what ,he wished--a faith that could fully trust ,him--the nobleman cried the second time1 ,sir1 come down ere my child die4 ,seeing his earnestness and his trust1 ,christ said1 ,go thy way2 thy son liveth4 ,and then we read that the nobleman believed4 ,he believed1 and he went his way4 ,he believed the word that ,jesus had spoken4 ,in that he rested and was content4 ,and he went away without having any other pledge than the word of ,jesus4 ,as he was walking homeward1 the servants met him1 to tell him his son lived4 ,he asked at what hour he began to amend4 ,and when they told him1 he knew it was at the very hour that ,jesus had been speaking to him4 ,he had at first a faith that was seeking1 and struggling1 and searching for blessing2 then he had a faith that accepted the blessing simply as it was contained in the word of ,jesus4 ,when ,christ said1 ,thy son liveth1 he was content1 and went home1 and found the blessing--the son restored4 ,then came the third step in his faith4 ,he believed with his whole house4 ,that is to say1 he did not only believe that ,christ could do just this one thing1 the healing of his son2 but he believed in ,christ as his ,lord4 ,he gave himself up entirely to be a disciple of ,jesus4 ,and that not only alone1 but with his whole house4 ,many ,christians are like the nobleman4 ,they have heard about a better life4 ,they have met certain individuals by whose ,christian lives they have been impressed1 and consequently have felt that ,christ can do wonderful things for a man4 ,many ,christians say in their heart1 ,i am sure there is a better life for me to live2 how ,i wish ,i could be brought to that blessed state6 ,but they have not much hope about it4 ,they have read1 and prayed1 but they have found everything so difficult1 ,if you ask them1 ,do you believe ,jesus can help you to live this higher life8 they say1 ,yes2 ,he is omnipotent4 ,if you ask1 ,do you believe ,jesus wishes to do it8 they say1 ,yes1 ,i know ,he is loving4 ,and if you say1 ,do you believe that ,he will do it for you8 they at once say1 ,i know ,he is willing1 but whether ,he will actually do it for me ,i do not know4 ,i am not sure that ,i am prepared4 ,i do not know if ,i am advanced enough4 ,i do not know if ,i have enough grace for that4 ,and so they are hungering1 struggling1 wrestling1 and often remain unblessed4 ,this state of things sometimes goes on for years--they are expecting to see signs and wonders1 and hoping that ,god1 by a miracle1 will put them all right4 ,they are just like the ,israelites2 they limit the ,holy ,one of ,israel4 ,have you ever noticed that it is the very people whom ,god has blessed so wonderfully who do that8 ,what did the ,israelites say8 ,god hath provided water in the wilderness4 ,but can ,he provide the table in the wilderness8 ,we do not think ,he can4 ,and so we find believers who say1 ,yes1 ,god has done wonders4 ,the whole of redemption is a wonder1 and ,god has done wonders for some whom ,i know4 ,but will ,god take one so feeble as ,i1 and put me entirely right8 ,the struggling and wrestling and seeking are the beginnings of faith in you--a faith that desires and hopes4 ,but it must go on further4 ,and how can that faith advance8 ,look at the second step4 ,there is the nobleman1 and ,christ speaks to him this wonderful word3 ,go thy way2 thy son liveth2 and the nobleman simply rests upon that word of the living ,jesus4 ,he rests on it1 and without any proof of what he is to get1 and without one man in the world to encourage him4 ,he goes away home with the thought1 ,i have received the blessing ,i sought2 ,i have got life from the dead for my son4 ,the living ,christ promised it me1 and on that ,i rest4 ,the struggling1 seeking faith has become a resting faith4 ,the man has entered into rest about his son4 ,and now1 dear believers1 this is the one thing ,god asks you to do3 ,god has said that in ,christ you have eternal life1 the more abundant life2 ,christ has said to you1 ,i live1 and ye shall live also4 ,the ,word says to us that ,christ is our ,peace1 our ,victory over every enemy1 who leads us into the rest of ,god4 ,these are the words of ,god1 and ,his message has come to us that ,christ can do for us what ,moses could not have done4 ,moses had no ,christ to live in him4 ,but it is told you that you can have what ,moses had not2 you can have a living ,christ within you4 ,and are you going to believe that1 apart from any experience1 and apart from any consciousness of strength8 ,if the peace of ,god is to rule in your heart1 it is the ,god of peace ,himself must be there to do it4 ,the peace is inseparable from the ,god4 ,the light of the sun--can ,i separate that from the sun8 ,utterly impossible4 ,as long as ,i have the sun ,i have the light4 ,if ,i lose the sun2 ,i lose the light4 ,take care6 ,do not seek the peace of ,god or the peace of ,christ apart from ,god and ,christ4 ,but how does ,christ come to me8 ,he comes to me in this precious ,word2 and just as ,he said to the nobleman1 ,go thy way home2 thy son liveth1 so ,christ comes to me to-day1 and ,he says1 ,go thy way2 thy ,saviour liveth4 ,lo1 ,i am with you alway4 ,i live1 and ye shall live also4 ,i wait to take charge of your whole life4 ,will you have me do this8 ,trust to me all that is evil and feeble2 your whole sinful and perverse nature--give it up to ,me2 that dying1 sin-sick soul--give it up to ,me1 and ,i will take care of it4 ,will you not listen and hear ,him speak to your soul8 ,child1 go forward into all the circumstances of life that have tempted you2 into all the difficulties that threaten you4 ,your soul lives with the life of ,god2 your soul lives in the power of ,god2 your soul lives in ,christ ,jesus4 ,will you not1 like the nobleman1 take the simple step of faith1 and believe the word ,jesus hath spoken8 ,will you not say1 ,lord ,jesus1 ,thou hast spoken3 ,i can rest on ,thy ,word4 ,i have seen that ,christ is willing to be more to me than ,i ever knew2 ,i have seen that ,christ is willing to be my life in the most actual and intense meaning of the words4 ,all that we know about the ,holy ,ghost sums itself up in this one thing3 ,the ,holy ,ghost comes to make ,christ an actual1 indwelling1 always-abiding ,saviour4 ,lastly1 comes the triumphant faith4 ,the man went home holding fast the promise4 ,he had only one promise1 but he held it fast4 ,when ,god gives me a promise1 ,he is just as near me as when ,he fulfills it4 ,that is a great comfort4 ,when ,i have the promise ,i have also the pledge of the fulfillment4 ,but the whole heart of ,god is in ,his promise1 just as much as in the fulfillment of it1 and sometimes ,god1 the promiser1 is more precious because ,i am compelled to cling more to ,him1 and to come closer1 and to live by simple faith1 and to adore ,his love4 ,do not think this is a hard life1 to be living upon a promise4 ,it means living upon the everlasting ,god4 ,who is going to say that is hard8 ,it means living upon the crucified1 the loving ,christ4 ,be ashamed to say that is a difficult thing4 ,it is a blessed thing4 ,the nobleman went home and found the child living4 ,and what happened then8 ,two things4 ,first3 he gave up his whole life to be a believer in ,jesus4 ,if there had been a division among the people of ,capernaum1 and thousands of them had hated ,christ1 this man would still have stood on ,his side4 ,he believed in the ,lord4 ,this is what must take place with us4 ,let us go forward with our trust in the living ,christ1 knowing that ,he will keep us4 ,then we will get grace to carry the life of ,christ into our whole conduct1 into all our walk and conversation4 ,the faith that rests in ,jesus1 is the faith that trusts all to ,him1 with all we have4 ,do we not read that when ,god had finished ,his work1 and rested1 it was only to begin new work8 ,yes2 the great work was to be carried on--watching over and ruling ,his world and ,his church4 ,and is it not so with the ,lord ,jesus8 ,when ,he had finished ,his work1 ,he sat upon the throne to do ,his work of perfecting the body1 through the ,holy ,spirit4 ,and now1 the ,holy ,spirit is carrying on that blessed work1 teaching us to rest in ,christ1 and in the strength of that rest to go on1 and to cover our whole life with the power1 and the obedience1 and the will1 and the likeness of the ,lord ,jesus4 ,the nobleman gave up his whole life to be a believer in ,christ2 and from that day it was a believer in ,jesus who walked about the streets of ,capernaum2 not only a man who could say1 ,once ,he helped me1 but1 ,i believe in ,him with my whole life4 ,let that be so with us everywhere2 let ,christ be the one object of our trust4 ,one thought more1--he believed with his whole house4 ,that was triumphant faith4 ,he took up his position as a believer in ,christ2 and his wife1 his children1 his servants--he gathered them all together1 and laid them at the feet of ,christ4 ,and if you want power in your own house1 if you want power in your ,bible-class1 if you want power in your social circle1 if you want power to influence the nation and if you want power to influence the ,church of ,christ1 see where it begins4 ,come into contact with ,jesus in this rest of faith that accepts ,his life fully1 that trusts ,him fully1 and the power will come by faith to overcome the world2 by faith to bless others2 by faith to live a life to the glory of ,god4 ,go thy way1 thy soul liveth2 for it is ,jesus ,christ who liveth within you4 ,go thy way2 be not trembling and fearful1 but rest in the word and the power of the ,son of ,god4 ,lo1 ,i am with you alway4 ,go thy way1 with the heart open to welcome ,him1 and the heart believing ,he has come in4 ,surely we have not prayed in vain4 ,christ has listened to the yearnings of our hearts and has entered in4 ,let us go our way quietly1 restfully1 full of praise1 and joy1 and trust2 ever hearing the words of our ,master1 ,go thy way1 thy soul liveth2 and ever saying1 ,i have trusted ,christ to reveal ,his abundant life in my soul2 by ,his grace ,i will wait upon ,him to fulfill ,his promise4 ,amen4 ,,the ,,source ,,of ,,power ,,in ,,prayer4 ,,xii4 ,romans #h3 #bf-bg4--,likewise the ,spirit also helpeth our infirmities3 for we know not what we should pray for as we ought3 but the ,spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered4 ,and he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the ,spirit1 because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of ,god4 ,here we have the teaching of ,god regarding the help the ,holy ,spirit will give us in prayer4 ,the first half of this chapter is of much importance in connection with the teaching of ,god's word regarding the ,spirit4 ,in ,romans vi4 we read about being dead to sin and alive to ,god1 and in ,romans vii41 about being dead to the law and married to ,christ1 and also about the impotency of the unregenerate man to do ,god's will4 ,this is only a preparation to show us how helpless we are2 and then in the eighth chapter comes the blessed work of the ,spirit1 expressed chiefly in the following words3 ,the ,spirit hath made us free from the law of sin and death4 ,the ,spirit makes us free from the power of sin1 and teaches and leads us so that we walk after the ,spirit4 ,in our inner disposition we may become spiritually minded1 and enabled to mortify the deeds of the body4 ,the ,holy ,spirit helps our infirmities4 ,prayer is the most necessary thing in the spiritual life4 ,yet we do not know how to pray nor what to pray for as we ought4 ,the ,spirit1 ,paul tells us1 prays with groanings unutterable4 ,and again he tells us that we ourselves often do not know what the ,spirit is doing within us1 but there is one1 ,god1 who searches the hearts4 ,words often reveal my thought and my wishes1 but not what is deep in my heart1 and ,god comes and searches my heart1 and deep down1 hidden1 what ,i can not see and what was to me an unutterable longing1 ,god finds4 ,powerful prayer6 ,the confession of ignorance6 ,ah1 friends1 ,i am often afraid for myself as a minister that ,i pray too easily4 ,i have been praying for these forty or fifty years and it becomes1 as far as man is concerned1 an easy thing to pray4 ,we all have been taught to pray1 and when we are called upon we can pray1 but it gets far too easy1 and ,i am afraid we think we are praying often when there is little real prayer4 ,now if we are to have the praying of the ,holy ,ghost in us one thing is needed2 we must begin by feeling1 ,i can not pray4 ,when a man breaks down and can not pray1 and there is a fire burning in his heart1 and a burden resting upon him1 there is something drawing him to ,god4 ,i know not what to pray1--oh1 blessed ignorance6 ,we are not ignorant enough4 ,abraham went out not knowing whither he went2 in that was an element of ignorance and also an element of faith4 ,jesus said to ,his disciples when they came with their prayer for the throne1 ,you know not what you ask4 ,paul says1 ,no man knoweth the things of ,god but the ,spirit of ,god4 ,you say1 ,if ,i am not to pray the old prayers ,i learned from my mother or from my professor in college or from my experience yesterday and the day before1 what am ,i to pray8 ,i answer1 pray new prayers1 rise higher into the riches of ,god4 ,you must begin to feel your ignorance4 ,you know what we think of a student who goes to college fancying he knows everything4 ,he will not learn much4 ,sir ,isaac ,newton said1 ,i do not know what ,i may appear to the world2 but to myself ,i seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary1 whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me4 ,when ,i see a man who can not pray glibly and smoothly and readily1 ,i say that is a mark of the ,holy ,spirit4 ,when he begins in his prayers to say1 ,oh1 ,god1 ,i want more1 ,i want to be led deeper in4 ,i have prayed for the heathen1 but ,i want to feel the burden of the heathen in a new way1 it is an indication of the presence of the ,holy ,spirit4 ,i tell you1 beloved1 if you will take time and let ,god lay the burden of the heathen heavier upon you until you begin to feel1 ,i have never prayed1 it will be the most blessed thing in your life4 ,and so with regard to the church3 ,we want to take up our position as members of the church of ,christ in this land2 and as belonging to that great body1 to say1 ,lord ,god1 is there nothing that can be done to bless the church of this land and to revive it and bring it out of its worldliness and out of its feebleness8 ,we may confer together and conclude faithlessly1 ,no1 we do not know what is to be done2 we have no influence and power over all these ministers and their churches4 ,but on the other hand1 how blessed to come to ,god and say1 ,lord1 we know not what to ask4 ,thou knowest what to grant4 ,the ,holy ,spirit could pray a hundred fold more in us if we were only conscious of our ignorance1 because we would then feel our dependence upon ,him4 ,may ,god teach us our ignorance in prayer and our impotence1 and may ,god bring us to say1 ,lord1 we can not pray2 we do not know what prayer is4 ,of course some of us do know in a measure what prayer is1 many of us1 and we thank ,god for what he has been to us in answer to prayer1 but oh1 it is only a little beginning compared to what the ,holy ,spirit of ,god teaches4 ,there is the first thought3 our ignorance4 ,we know not what we should pray for as we ought2 but the ,spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered4 ,we often hear about the work of ,god the ,father and the ,son and the ,holy ,ghost in working out and completing the great redemption1 and we know that when ,god worked in the creation of the world1 ,he was not weary1 and yet we read that wonderful expression in the book of ,exodus about the ,sabbath day1 ,god rested and was refreshed4 ,he was refreshed1 the ,sabbath day was a refreshment to ,him4 ,god had to work and ,christ had to work1 and now the ,holy ,spirit works1 and ,his secret working place1 the place where all work must begin1 is in the heart where ,he comes to teach a man how to pray4 ,when a man begins to get an insight into that which is needed and that which is promised and that which ,god waits to perform1 he feels it to be beyond his conception2 then is the time he will be ready to say1 ,i can not limit the holy one of ,israel by my thoughts2 ,i give myself up in the faith that the ,holy ,spirit can be praying for me with groanings1 with longings1 that can not be expressed4 ,apply that to your prayers4 ,there are different phases of prayer4 ,there is worship1 when a man just bows down to adore the great ,god4 ,we do not take time to worship4 ,we need to worship in secret1 just to get ourselves face to face with the everlasting ,god1 that ,he may overshadow us and cover us and fill us with ,his love and ,his glory4 ,it is the ,holy ,spirit that can work in us such a yearning that we will give up our pleasures and even part of our business1 that we may the oftener meet our ,god4 ,the next phase of prayer is fellowship4 ,in prayer there is not only the worship of a king1 but fellowship as of a child with ,god4 ,christians take far too little time in fellowship4 ,they think prayer is just coming with their petitions4 ,if ,christ is to make me what ,i am to be1 ,i must tarry in fellowship with ,god4 ,if ,god is to let his love enter in and shine and burn through my heart1 ,i must take time to be with ,him4 ,the smith puts his rod of iron into the fire4 ,if he leaves it there but a short time it does not become red hot4 ,he may take it out to do something with it and after a time put it back again for a few minutes1 but this time it does not become red hot4 ,in the course of the day he may put the rod into the fire a great many times and leave it there two or three minutes each time1 but it never becomes thoroughly heated4 ,if he takes time and leaves the rod ten or fifteen minutes in the fire the whole iron will become red hot with the heat that is in the fire4 ,so if we are to get the fire of ,god's holiness and love and power we must take more time with ,god in fellowship4 ,that was what gave men like ,abraham and ,moses their strength4 ,they were men who were separated to a fellowship with ,god1 and the living ,god made them strong4 ,oh1 if we did but realize what prayer can do6 ,another1 and a most important phase of prayer is intercession4 ,what a work ,god has set open for those who are ,his priests--intercessors6 ,we find a wonderful expression in the prophecy of ,isaiah2 ,god says1 ,let him take hold of me2 and again1 ,there is none that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee4 ,in other passages ,god refers to the intercessors for ,israel4 ,have you ever taken hold of ,god8 ,thank ,god1 some of us have2 but oh1 friends1 representatives of the church of ,christ in the ,united ,states1 if ,god were to show us how much there is of intense prayer for a revival through the church1 how much of sincere confession of the sins of the church1 how much of pleading with ,god and giving ,him no rest till ,he make ,jerusalem a glory in the earth1 ,i think we should all be ashamed4 ,we need to give up our hearts to the ,holy ,spirit1 that ,he may pray for us and in us with groanings that can not be uttered4 ,what am ,i to do if ,i am to have this ,holy ,spirit within me8 ,the ,spirit wants time and room in the heart2 ,he wants the whole being4 ,he wants all my interest and influence going out for the honor and the glory of ,god2 ,he wants me to give myself up4 ,beloved friend1 you do not know what you could do if you would give yourself up to intercession4 ,it is a work that a sick one lying on a bed year by year may do in power4 ,it is a work that a poor one who has hardly a penny to give to a missionary society can do day by day4 ,it is a work that a young girl who is in her father's house and has to help in the housekeeping can do by the ,holy ,spirit4 ,people often ask3 ,what does the ,church of our day do to reach the masses8 ,they ask1 though they ask it tremblingly1 for they feel so helpless3 ,what can we do against the materialism and infidelity in places like ,london and ,berlin and ,new ,york and ,paris8 ,we have given it up as hopeless4 ,ah1 if men and women could be called out to band themselves together to take hold upon ,god6 ,i am not speaking of any prayer union or any prayer time statedly set apart1 but if the ,spirit could find men and women who would give up their lives to cry to ,god1 the ,spirit would most surely come4 ,it is not selfishness and it is not mere happiness that we seek when we talk about the peace and the rest and the blessing ,christ can give4 ,god wants us1 ,christ wants us1 because ,he has to do a work2 the work of ,calvary is to be done in our hearts1 we are to sacrifice our lives to pleading with ,god for men4 ,oh1 let us yield ourselves day by day and ask ,god that it may please ,him to let ,his ,holy ,spirit work in us4 ,then comes the last thought1 that ,god ,himself comes to look with complacency upon the attitude of ,his child4 ,perhaps that poor man does not know that he is praying2 perhaps he is ashamed of his prayers4 ,so much the better4 ,perhaps he feels burdened and restless1 but ,god hears1 ,god discovers what is the mind of the ,spirit1 and will answer4 ,oh1 think of this wonderful mystery1 ,god the ,father on the throne ready to grant unto us ,his blessings according to the riches of ,his glory2 ,christ the almighty high priest pleading day and night4 ,his whole person is one intercession1 and there goes up from ,him without ceasing the pleading to the ,father1 ,bless thy church1 and the answer comes from the ,father to the ,son1 and from the ,son down to the church1 and if it does not reach us1 it is because our hearts are closed4 ,let us open and enlarge our hearts and say to ,god1 ,oh that ,i might be a priest1 to enter ,god's presence continually and to take hold of ,god and to bring down a blessing to my perishing fellowmen6 ,god longs to find the intercession of ,jesus reflected in the hearts of ,his children1 and where ,he finds it1 it is a delight4 ,and ,he that searcheth the hearts knoweth the mind of the ,spirit1 because he prayeth for the saints1 according to the will of ,god4 ,some one has spoken of that word1 for the saints1 as meaning the spirit of praise in the believer for the saints throughout the world4 ,god's word continually comes to us to pray for all not to be content with ourselves4 ,think upon the hundreds of church members in this land1 multitudes unconverted1 multitudes just converted1 but yet worldly and careless4 ,think of the thousands of nominal ,christians--,christians in name1 but robbing ,god6 and can we be happy8 ,if we bear the burden of souls1 can we have this peace and joy8 ,god gives you peace and joy with no other object than that you should be strong to bear the burden of souls in the joy of ,christ's salvation4 ,we do not wish to say1 ,i am trying to be as holy as ,i can2 what have ,i to do with those worldly people about me8 ,if there is a terrible disease in my hand1 my body can not say1 ,i have nothing to do with it4 ,when the people had sinned ,ezra rent his garments and bowed in the dust and made confession4 ,he repented on the part of the people4 ,and ,nehemiah1 when the nation sinned1 made confession1 and cast himself before ,god1 deploring their disobedience to the ,god of their fathers4 ,daniel did the very same4 ,and think you that we as believers have not a great work to do8 ,suppose we were each1 persons without a single sin2 just suppose it2 could we then make confession8 ,look at ,christ1 without sin6 ,he went down into the waters of baptism with sinners2 ,he made ,himself one with them4 ,god has spoken to us to ask us if we realize what we are4 ,he now asks us whether we belong to the church of this land1 whether we have borne the burden of sin around us4 ,let us go to ,god and may ,he by the ,holy ,spirit fill our hearts with unutterable sorrow at the state of the church1 and may ,god give us grace to mourn before ,him4 ,and when we begin to confess the sins of the church1 we will begin to feel our own sins as never before4 ,in five of the epistles to the seven churches in ,asia the keynote was ,repent2 there was to be no idea of overcoming and getting a blessing unless they repented4 ,let us on behalf of the church of ,christ repent1 and ,god will give us courage to feel that ,he will revive ,his work4 ,,that ,,god ,,may ,,be ,,all ,,in ,,all4 ,,xiii4 #a ,corinthians #ae3 #bd-bh4--,then cometh the end1 when ,he shall have delivered up the kingdom to ,god1 even the ,father2 when ,he shall have put down all rule1 and all authority and power4 ,for ,he must reign till ,he hath put all enemies under ,his feet4 ,the last enemy that shall be destroyed is death4 ,for ,he hath put all things under ,his feet4 ,but when ,he saith1 ,all things are put under ,him1 it is manifest that ,he is excepted1 which did put all things under ,him4 ,and when all things shall be subdued unto him1 then shall the ,son also ,himself be subject unto ,him1 that ,god may be all in all4 ,this will be the grand conclusion of the great drama of the world's history1 and of ,christ's redemption4 ,there will come a day--the glory is such we can form no conception of it1 the mystery is so deep we can not realize it1 but there is a day coming1 when the ,son shall deliver up the ,kingdom that the ,father gave ,him1 and that ,he won with ,his blood1 and that ,he hath established and perfected from the throne of ,his glory4 ,he shall deliver up the ,kingdom unto the ,father4 ,the ,son ,himself shall be subject also unto the ,father1 that ,god may be all in all4 ,i cannot understand it--the ever blessed ,son equal with ,god1 from eternity1 and through eternity2 the ever blessed ,son on the throne shall be subject unto the ,father2 and in some way utterly beyond our comprehension1 it shall then be made manifest1 as never before1 that ,god is all in all4 ,it is this that ,christ has been working for2 it is this that ,he is working for to-day in us2 it is this that ,he thought it worth while to give ,his blood for2 it is this that ,his heart is longing for in each of us2 this is the very essence and glory of ,christianity1 that ,god may be all in all4 ,and now1 if this is what fills the heart of ,christ2 if this expresses the one end of the work of ,christ1 then1 if ,i want to have the spirit of ,christ in me1 the motto of my life must be3 ,everything made subject1 and swallowed up in ,him1 that ,god may be all in all4 ,what a triumph it would be if the ,church were fighting really with that banner floating over her6 ,what a life ours could be if that were really our banner6 ,to serve ,god fully1 wholly1 only1 to have ,him all in all6 ,how it would ennoble1 and enlarge1 and stimulate our whole being6 ,i am working1 ,i am fighting1 that ,god may be all in all2 that the day of glory may be hastened4 ,i am praying1 and the ,holy ,spirit makes ,his wrestling in me with unutterable longing1 that ,god may be all in all4 ,would that we ,christians realized in connection with what a grand cause we are working and praying2 that we had some conception of what a ,kingdom we are partakers of1 and what a manifestation of ,god we are preparing for4 ,to illustrate what a grand thing it is to belong to the ,kingdom of ,god1 and to the glorious ,church of ,christ on earth1 ,john ,mc,neill tells how when he was a boy twelve years of age1 working on a railway line and earning the grand wages of six shillings a week1 he used to go home to his mother and sisters1 who thought no end of their little ,johnnie1 and delight them by telling of the position he had4 ,he would say with great pride1 ,oh1 our company--it has so many thousands of pounds passing through its hands every year2 it carries so many hundreds of thousands of passengers every year2 and it has so many miles of railway1 and so many engines and carriages2 and so many thousands in its employ6 ,and the mother and the sisters had great pride in him1 because he was a partner in such an important business4 ,christians1 if we would only rouse ourselves to believe that we belong to the ,kingdom that ,christ is preparing to deliver up to the ,father1 that ,god may be all in all1 how the glory would fill our hearts1 and expel everything mean1 and low1 and earthly6 ,how we should be borne along in this blessed faith6 ,i am living for this3 that ,christ may have the ,kingdom to deliver to the ,father4 ,i am living for this1 and ,i will one day see ,him made subject to the ,father1 and then ,god all in all4 ,i am living for ,him1 and ,i shall be there not only as a witness1 but ,i will have a part in it all4 ,the ,kingdom delivered up1 the ,son made subject1 and ,god all in all6 ,i shall have a part in it1 and in adoring worship share the glory and the blessedness4 ,let us take this home to our hearts1 that it may rule in our lives--this one thought1 this one faith1 this one aim1 this one joy3 ,christ lived1 and died1 and reigns2 ,i live and die and in ,his power ,i reign2 only for this one thing1 that ,god may be all in all4 ,let it possess our whole heart1 and life4 ,how can we do this8 ,it is a serious question1 to which ,i wish to give you a few simple answers4 ,and ,i say1 first of all3 ,allow ,god to take ,his place in your heart and life4 ,luther often said to people1 when they came troubling him about difficulties1 ,do let ,god be ,god4 ,oh1 give ,god ,his place4 ,and what is that place8 ,that ,god may be all in all4 ,let ,god be all in all every day1 from morning to evening4 ,god to rule and ,i to obey4 ,ah1 the blessedness of saying1 ,god and ,i6 ,what a privilege that ,i have such a partner6 ,god first1 and then ,i6 ,and yet there might be secret self-exaltation in associating ,god with myself4 ,and ,i find in the ,bible a more precious word still4 ,it is1 ,god and not ,i4 ,it is not1 ,god first1 and ,i second2 ,god is all1 and ,i am nothing4 ,paul said1 ,i labored more abundantly than they all2 though ,i be nothing4 ,let us try to give ,god ,his place--begin in our closet1 in our worship1 in our prayer4 ,the power of prayer depends almost entirely upon our apprehension of who it is with whom ,i speak4 ,it is of the greatest consequence1 if we have but half an hour in which to pray1 that we take time to get a sight of this great ,god1 in ,his power1 in ,his love1 in ,his nearness1 just waiting to bless us4 ,this is of far more consequence than spending the whole half hour in pouring out numberless petitions1 and pleading numberless promises4 ,the great thing is to feel that we are putting our supplications into the bosom of omnipotent ,love4 ,before and above everything1 let us take time ere we pray to realize the glory and presence of ,god4 ,give ,god ,his place in every prayer4 ,i say1 allow ,god to have ,his place4 ,i can not give ,god ,his place upon the throne--in a certain sense ,i can1 and ,i ought to try4 ,the great thing1 however1 is for me to feel that ,i can not realize what that place is1 but ,god will increasingly reveal ,himself and the place ,he holds4 ,how do ,i know anything about the sun8 ,because the sun shines1 and in its light ,i see what the sun is4 ,the sun is its own evidence4 ,no philosopher could have told me about the sun if the sun did not shine4 ,no power of meditation and thought can grasp the presence of ,god4 ,be quiet1 and trusting1 and resting1 and the everlasting ,god will shine into your heart1 and will reveal ,himself4 ,and then1 just as naturally as ,i enjoy the light of the sun1 and as naturally as ,i look upon the pages of a book knowing that ,i can see the letters because the light shines2 just as naturally will ,god reveal ,himself to the waiting soul1 and make ,his presence a reality4 ,god will take ,his place as ,god in the presence of ,his child1 so that absolutely and actually the chief thing in the child's heart shall be3 ,god is here1 ,god makes ,himself known4 ,beloved1 is not this what you long for--that ,god shall take a place that ,he has never had2 and that ,god shall come to you in a nearness that you have never felt yet2 and1 above all1 that ,god shall come to you in an abiding and unbroken fellowship8 ,god is able to take ,his place before you all the day4 ,i repeat what ,i have referred to before1 because ,god has taught me a lesson by it3 ,as ,god made the light of the sun so soft1 and sweet1 and bright1 and universal1 and unceasing1 that it never costs me a minute's trouble to enjoy it2 even so1 and far more real than the light shining upon me1 the nearness of my ,god can be revealed to me as my abiding portion4 ,let us all pray that ,god may be all in all1 in our everyday life4 ,that ,god may be all in all1 ,i must not only allow ,him to take ,his place1 but secondly1 ,i must accept ,his will in everything4 ,i must accept ,his will in every providence4 ,whether it be a ,judas that betrays1 or whether it be a ,pilate in his indifference1 who gives me up to the enemy2 whatever the trouble1 or temptation1 or vexation1 or worry1 that comes1 ,i must see ,god in it1 and accept it as ,god's will to me4 ,trouble of any sort that comes to me is ,god's will for me4 ,it is not ,god's will that men should do the wrong1 but it is ,god's will that they should be in circumstances of trial4 ,there is never a trial that comes to us but it is ,god's will for us1 and if we learn to see ,god in it1 then we bid it welcome4 ,suppose away in ,south ,africa there is a woman whose husband has gone on a long journey into the interior4 ,he is to be away for months from all posts4 ,the wife is anxious to receive news4 ,in weeks she has had no letter or tidings from him4 ,one day1 as she stands in her door1 there comes a great1 savage ,kafir4 ,he is frightful in appearance1 and carries his spears and shield4 ,the woman is alarmed and rushes into the house and closes the door4 ,he comes and knocks at the door1 and she is in terror4 ,she sends her servant1 who comes back and says1 ,the man says he must see you4 ,she goes1 all affrighted4 ,he takes out an old newspaper4 ,he has come a month's journey on foot from her husband1 and inside the dirty newspaper is a letter from her husband1 telling her of his welfare4 ,how that wife delights in that letter6 ,she forgets the face that has terrified her4 ,and now as weeks are passing away again1 how she begins to long for that ugly ,kafir messenger6 ,after long waiting he comes again1 and this time she rushes out to meet him because he is the messenger that comes from her beloved husband1 and she knows that with all his repelling exterior1 he is the bearer of a message of love4 ,beloved1 have you learned to look at tribulation1 and vexation1 and disappointment1 as the dark1 savage-looking messenger with a spear in his hand1 that comes straight from ,jesus8 ,have you learned to say1 ,there is never a trouble1 and never a hurt by which my heart is touched or even pierced1 but it comes from ,jesus1 and brings a message of love8 ,will you not learn to say from to-day1 ,welcome every trial1 for it comes from ,god8 ,if you want ,god to be all in all1 you must see and meet ,god in every providence4 ,oh1 learn to accept ,god's will in everything6 ,come learn to say of every trial1 without exception1 ,it is my ,father who sent it4 ,i accept it as ,his messenger1 and nothing in earth or hell can separate you from ,god4 ,if ,god is to be all in all in your heart and life1 ,i say not only1 ,allow ,him to take ,his place1 and accept all ,his will1 but1 thirdly1 ,trust in ,his power4 ,dear friends1 it is ,god who worketh to will and to do according to ,his good pleasure4 ,it is the ,god of peace1 according to another passage1 who perfects you in every good thing to do ,his will1 working in you what is well-pleasing in ,his sight4 ,you complain of weakness1 of feebleness1 of emptiness4 ,never mind2 that is what you are made for--to be an emptied vessel1 in which ,god can put ,his fullness and ,his strength4 ,do learn the lesson4 ,i know it is not easy4 ,long after ,paul had been an apostle1 the ,lord ,jesus had to come in a very special way to teach him to say1 ,i do gladly glory in my infirmities4 ,paul was in danger of being exalted1 owing to the revelations from ,heaven1 and ,jesus sent him a thorn in the flesh--yes1 ,jesus sent it--a messenger of ,satan--to buffet him4 ,paul prayed1 and struggled1 and wanted to get rid of it4 ,and ,jesus came to him1 and said1 ,it is my doing that you may not be free from that4 ,you need it4 ,i will bless you wonderfully in it4 ,paul's life was changed from that moment in this one respect1 and he said1 ,i never knew it so before1 from henceforth ,i glory in my infirmities2 for when ,i am weak1 then am ,i strong4 ,do you indeed desire ,god to be all in all8 ,learn to glory in your weakness4 ,take time to say every day as you bow before ,god1 ,the almighty power of ,god that works in the sun1 and the moon1 and the stars1 and the flowers1 is working in me4 ,it is as sure as that ,i live4 ,the almighty power of ,god is working in me4 ,i only need to get down1 and be quiet2 ,i need to be more submissive1 and surrendered to ,his will2 ,i need to be more trustful1 and to allow ,god to do with me what ,he will4 ,give ,god ,his way with you1 and let ,god work1 and ,he will work mightily4 ,the deepest quietness has often been proved to be the inspiration for the highest action4 ,it has been seen in the experience of many of ,god's saints1 and it is just the experience we need1--that in the quietness of surrender and faith1 ,god's working has been made manifest4 ,fourthly3 ,if ,god is to be all in all1 sacrifice everything for ,his kingdom and glory4 ,that ,god may be all in all4 ,this is such a noble1 glorious1 holy aim that ,christ said1 ,for this ,i will give my life4 ,for this ,i will give my all1 even to the death of the cross4 ,for this ,i will give myself4 ,if it was worth that to ,christ1 is it worth less to you8 ,if one had asked ,jesus of ,nazareth1 ,what is it ,thou hast a body for2 what is to ,thee the highest use of the body8 ,he would have said1 ,the use and the glory of my body is that ,i can give it a sacrifice to ,god4 ,that is every thing4 ,what is the use of having a mind2 and what is the use of having money2 and what is the use of having children8 ,that ,i can give them to ,god2 for ,god must be all in all in everything4 ,i pray ,god that ,he may give us such a sight of ,his kingdom1 and ,his glory1 that everything else may disappear4 ,then1 if you had ten thousand lives1 you would say1 ,this is the beauty and the worth of life1 'that ,god may be all in all' to me1 and that ,i may prove to men that ,god is more than everything1 that life is only worth living as it is given to ,god to fill4 ,do let us sacrifice everything for ,his kingdom and glory4 ,begin to live day by day with the prayer1 ,my ,god1 ,i am given up to ,thee4 ,be ,thou my all in all4 ,you say1 ,am ,i able to realize that8 ,yes1 in this way3 ,let the ,holy ,spirit dwell in you2 let the ,holy ,spirit burn in you as a fire1 and burn in you with unutterable groanings1 crying unto ,god1 ,himself to reveal ,his presence and ,his will in you4 ,in the eighth of ,romans1 ,paul spoke about the groanings of the whole creation4 ,and what is the whole creation groaning for8 ,for the redemption1 the glorious liberty of the children of ,god4 ,and ,i am persuaded that was what ,paul meant when he spoke of the groanings of the ,holy ,spirit--the unutterable groanings for the coming time of glory when ,god should be all in all4 ,christians1 sacrifice your time2 sacrifice your interests2 sacrifice your heart's best powers in praying1 and desiring1 and crying that ,god may be all in all4 ,and lastly3 if ,god is to be all in all1 wait continually on ,him all the day4 ,my first point had reference to giving ,god ,his place2 but ,i want to bring this out more pointedly in conclusion4 ,wait continually on ,god all the day4 ,if you are to do that1 you must live always in ,his presence4 ,that is what we have been redeemed for4 ,do we not read in the ,epistle to the ,hebrews1 ,let us draw near within the veil1 through the blood1 where the high priest is8 ,the holy place in which we are to live in the heavens is the immediate presence of ,god4 ,the abiding presence of ,god is certainly the heritage of every child of ,god1 as that the sun shines4 ,the ,father never hides ,his face from ,his child4 ,sin hides it1 and unbelief hides it1 but the ,father lets ,his love shine all the day on the face of ,his children4 ,the sun is shining day and night4 ,your sun shall never go down4 ,begin to seek for this4 ,come and live in the presence of ,god4 ,there is indeed an abiding place in ,his presence1 in the secret of ,his pavilion1 of which some one has sung very beautifully3 ,with me1 wheresoe'er ,i wander1 ,that great ,presence goes2 ,that unutterable gladness1 ,undisturbed repose4 ,everywhere1 the blessed stillness ,of that ,holy ,place2 ,stillness of the love that worships1 ,dumb before ,his face4 ,this is the portion of those to whom the prayer is granted--,one thing have ,i desired of the ,lord1 and that will ,i seek after2 that ,i may dwell all my days in the house of the ,lord2 to behold the beauty of the ,lord1 and to inquire in ,his temple4 ,in the secret of ,his pavilion ,he hideth me4 ,god ,himself will take you up1 and will keep you there1 so that all your work shall be done in ,god4 ,beloved1 wait continually upon ,god4 ,you can not do this unless you are in ,his presence4 ,you must live in ,his presence4 ,then the blessed habit of waiting upon ,god will be learned4 ,the real difficulty of getting to the point of real waiting upon ,god1 is because most ,christians have not sought to realize the nearness of ,god1 and to give ,god the first place4 ,but let us strive after this1 let us trust ,god to give it to us by ,his grace1 let us wait on ,god all the day4 ,my eyes1 says one1 are ever towards ,thee4 ,wait upon ,god for guidance1 and ,god1 if you wait much upon ,him1 will lead you up into new power for ,his service1 into new gladness in ,his fellowship4 ,he will lead you out into a larger trust in ,him2 ,he will prepare you to expect new things from ,him4 ,beloved1 there is no knowing what ,god will do for a man who is utterly given up to ,him4 ,praise ,his name6 ,let each one of us say1 ,may my life be to live and die1 to labor and to pray continually for this one thing3 that in me1 and around me1 and in the church2 that throughout the world ',god may be all in all4' ,a little seed is the beginning of a great tree4 ,a mustard seed becomes a tree in which the birds of the air can nestle4 ,that great day of which the text speaks1 when ,christ ,himself shall be subject to the ,father1 and deliver up the ,kingdom to the ,father1 and ,god shall be all in all--that is the great tree of the ,kingdom of ,god reaching its perfect consummation and glory4 ,oh1 let us take the seed of that glory into our hearts1 and let us bow in lowly surrender and submission1 and say1 ,amen1 ,lord2 this be my one thought4 ,this be my life--to speak and to work1 to pray and to exist only that others may be brought to know ,him too4 ,this be my life--to yield myself to the unutterable yearnings of the ,holy ,spirit1 that ,i may not rest1 but ever keep my eye on that day--the day of glory1 when in very deed ,god shall be all in all4 ,god help every one of us4 ,god help us all to yield ourselves to ,him1 and to ,christ1 and to make it our every-day life2 for ,his name's sake4 ,amen4 ,,the ,,end4
