sincerely wish that all believers1 and especially all ministers and ,christian workers1 might in some way be led to read it4 ,the subject is vital to any right understanding of the age in which we live1 and of the personal conflict which we wage2 for the existence1 personality1 and power of ,satan are awful facts and of immense present significance4 ,we walk in the midst of his snares1 hear on every hand his doctrines proclaimed by men of blameless lives transformed as the ministers of righteousness1 and are allured by the pleasure1 place and power of his perfectly organized world-system4 ,i know of no other book on ,satan in which the dispensational aspects of the subject are so clearly stated1 nor any other so severely ,biblical4 ,c4 ,i4 ,scofield4 ,introduction4 ,the world has been willing to comply with the wishes and projects of ,satan to the extent of ceasing to believe that he really exists2 this unbelief being most advantageous to his present undertakings4 ,yet the opinions of men have never changed the facts of revelation1 and1 according to ,scripture1 ,satan exists2 still possessed with great power and influence over the affairs of men--a power and influence to be increasingly dreaded as this present age advances4 ,the teachings of ,scripture on this important subject are but little understood by ,christians and seem to be entirely outside the thought of the world4 ,it is1 therefore1 to be expected that any attempt to present this truth will seem1 to many1 mere folly and fiction4 ,the name ,satan has by no means been lost4 ,it has1 however1 been associated with a most unscriptural fancy4 ,without reference to revelation1 the world has imagined a grotesque being1 fitted with strange trappings1 who has been made the central character in theatrical performances2 and by this relation to the unreality of the theatre1 the real character of ,satan has come to be only one of the myths of a bygone age4 ,scripture reveals a detailed description of the person and career of ,satan2 beginning with his creation2 his original condition2 his fall1 and on to his kingdom with all its developments1 and his final defeat and banishment4 ,it presents a personage so mighty and so prominent in the world to-day that the ,christian heart would fail1 were it not for faith in the ,one who has triumphed over all principalities and powers4 ,this attempt to outline the ,scripture teaching on this character will be undertaken under certain general conditions3 ,first--,the authority of the ,scriptures of both the ,old and the ,new ,testaments will be accepted without question4 ,second--,evidence will be drawn from the ,word of ,god alone1 since no final light can be found on this subject other than it has pleased ,god to reveal in the ,bible4 ,third--,there will be no discussion as to the actual existence of ,satan2 this being both assumed and taught from ,genesis to ,revelation4 ,these pages are prepared especially for believers2 knowing that this body of truth will be wholly unnoticed or rejected by the ,satan-blinded world 7#b ,cor4 #d3d74 ,there has also been a deep sense of the seriousness of the undertaking3 both because ,satan1 by his present direct power1 would1 if possible1 hinder any larger understanding of his projects and purposes2 and because so great a warning has fallen from the lips of ,christ against the sin of ascribing to ,satan the things which are really of ,god 7,matt4 #ab3bb-cb74 ,the work has1 therefore1 been undertaken with some degree of reliance upon the keeping and guiding power of the ,spirit of ,god1 and is presented with the prayer that believers may have a clearer understanding of this important body of truth and be able to say with ,paul1 ,we are not ignorant of his devices4 ,it is also desired that some clearer vision of this mighty foe may be had which will cause the child of ,god to realize the overwhelming power of his adversary and be constrained to be strong in the ,lord and in the power of his might2 that greater victory may be had in the realization of the whole will of ,god4 ,chapter ,i4 ,the ,career of ,satan ,this chapter is a brief outline of the past1 present and future of ,satan1 which is taken up at this point both that the following chapters may be more easily studied and because of the fact that those passages which deal most directly with his earliest condition are closely interwoven with predictions of his future and final defeat4 ,revelation in regard to ,satan begins with that dateless period between the perfect creation of the heavens and the earth 7,gen4 #a3a7 and the desolating judgment which ended that period1 when the earth became waste and empty 7,gen4 #a3b2 ,isa4 #bd3a2 ,jer4 #d3bc-bf74 ,one passage1 ,ezek4 #bh3aa-ai1 deals at length with ,satan and his relation to that age4 ,in this ,scripture ,satan is evidently described under the title of ,the ,king of ,tyrus4 ,like the ,messianic ,psalms1--wherein the ,psalmist is apparently referring to himself1 though statements are made and conditions described that could only be connected with the ,messiah1 the ,son of ,god1--so1 here1 that which is addressed to ,the ,king of ,tyrus is1 by its character1 seen to be a direct reference to the person of ,satan2 for no similar person to whom this description could apply is revealed in ,scripture4 ,in the previous as well as the following chapters the final judgment of ,jehovah is pronounced upon the enemies of ,his chosen people4 ,satan is distinctly numbered among these enemies in ,i ,chron4 #ba3a2 and his record and judgment naturally appear in this list4 ,every sentence of this extended passage is a distinct revelation and is worthy of long and careful study4 ,only a passing reference can be made to it here4 ,the passage is as follows3 ,moreover the word of the ,lord came unto me1 saying1 ,son of man1 take up a lamentation upon the ,king of ,tyrus1 and say unto him1 ,thus saith the ,lord ,god2 ,thou sealest up the sum1 full of wisdom1 and perfect in beauty4 ,thou hast been in ,eden the garden of ,god2 every precious stone was thy covering1 the sardius1 topaz1 and the diamond1 the beryl1 the onyx1 and the jasper1 the sapphire1 the emerald1 and the carbuncle and gold3 the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created4 ,thou art the anointed cherub that covereth2 and ,i have set thee so3 thou wast upon the holy mountain of ,god2 thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire4 ,thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day thou wast created1 till iniquity was found in thee4 ,by the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence1 and thou hast sinned3 therefore ,i will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of ,god3 and ,i will destroy thee1 ,o covering cherub1 from the midst of the stones of fire4 ,thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty1 thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness3 ,i will cast thee to the ground1 ,i will lay thee before ,kings1 that they may behold thee4 ,thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thy iniquities1 by the iniquity of thy traffic2 therefore will ,i bring forth a fire from the midst of thee1 it shall devour thee1 and ,i will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee4 ,all they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee3 thou shalt be a terror1 and never shalt thou be any more4 ,this passage describes much of the early and latter career of ,satan4 ,twice is his creation referred to4 ,in verse fifteen it is stated that he was created perfect1 and in verse thirteen that perfection is set forth in detail by the suggestive symbols of precious gems4 ,he was also full of wisdom1 perfect in beauty1 filling up the sum of perfection4 ,in verse fourteen he is called the anointed cherub that covereth4 ,by this the purpose of the ,creator is revealed4 ,the general interpretation of this verse is that ,satan was created as a guard or protector to the throne of the ,most ,high4 ,this is reasonable4 ,like the golden cherubim1 covering the visible mercy seat in the ,holy of ,holies of the earthly tabernacle1 he was created a guard and covering cherub to the heavenly center of ,glory4 ,it is expressly stated that he was located by the ,most ,high upon the holy mountain of ,god1 the mountain of ,god being a symbol of the center of ,god's power1 government1 and eternal throne 7,ps4 #dh3a2 #fh3ae2 ,isa4 #b3b74 ,over this exalted throne ,satan was set as a covering cherub4 ,he is also said to have been in ,eden1 the garden of ,god1 which is evidently another ,eden than that in which ,satan appeared as a serpent4 ,it is probably a reference to the primitive creation1 and the whole passage suggests a position of great authority for which he was created and anointed2 a position from which he fell1 drawing with him a host of beings over whom he had governing influence and power4 ,again1 it is stated that ,satan was perfect in all his ways from the day he was created4 ,it is important to notice both that he was created1 and that he was created perfect4 ,since he was created1 he is not self-existent1 and never can be free from his dependence upon the ,creator4 ,he may vainly propose to become independent1 and even be permitted for a time to act under that delusion2 but that would only delay the inevitable judgment that awaits him4 ,he was created perfect1 or was a perfect fulfilment of the ,creator's intention4 ,satan was a free moral agent2 capable of choosing evil1 but not obliged to do so4 ,that he chose evil must ever be his own condemnation2 for the ,creator had surrounded him with sufficient motives to choose the good4 ,the crime of ,satan is partly revealed in verse sixteen and this is followed by an exact description of his final judgment as it is predicted in the book of ,revelation4 ,the important teaching of this passage is of ,satan's first position and power--a power and wisdom sufficient to guard the throne of ,god from every possible enemy1 and a glory and beauty that would become the highest officer in the ,court of ,heaven4 ,by this revelation his present position and power may be estimated4 ,the revelation next in importance is that of his crime2 this is clearly set forth in ,isa4 #ad3ab-bj4 ,before reading this passage it should be noticed that the prophet's vision of ,satan1 here recorded1 is from the time of his final judgment1 and the prophet is looking backward over ,satan's whole career4 ,much that is still future is1 therefore1 referred to as though it were past4 ,the passage is as follows3 ,how art thou fallen from heaven1 ,o ,lucifer1 son of the morning6 ,how art thou cut down to the ground1 which didst weaken the nations6 ,for thou hast said in thine heart1 ,i will ascend into heaven1 ,i will exalt my throne above the stars of ,god3 ,i will sit also upon the mount of the congregation1 in the sides of the north3 ,i will ascend above the heights of the clouds2 ,i will be like the ,most ,high4 ,yet thou shalt be brought down to hell1 to the sides of the pit4 ,they that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee1 and consider thee1 saying1 ,is this the man that made the earth to tremble1 that did shake kingdoms2 that made the world as a wilderness1 and destroyed the cities thereof2 that opened not the house of his prisoners8 ,all the kings of the nations1 even all of them1 lie in glory1 every one in his own house4 ,but thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch1 and as the raiment of those that are slain1 thrust through with a sword1 that go down to the stones of the pit2 as a carcass trodden under feet4 ,here ,satan appears under a different title4 ,when he is seen in the primal glory1 as described in ,ezekiel #bh3aa-ai1 he bears the earthly title of ,the ,king of ,tyrus and when fallen from that sphere1 he bears the heavenly title of ,lucifer1 ,son of the ,morning4 ,it is as though1 being out of harmony with the ,creator by his sin1 he is out of harmony with every sphere in which he may appear4 ,this glorious heavenly title1 ,lucifer1 ,son of the ,morning1 speaks of his first place in the celestial sphere1 when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of ,god shouted for joy 7,job #ch3g74 ,it would indicate a position near to the unsurpassed glory of ,the ,bright and ,morning ,star1 ,the ,sun of ,righteousness who shall yet arise with healing in ,his wings4 ,satan is here again said to be fallen from heaven4 ,of this fall ,jesus speaks in ,luke #aj3ah1 ,i beheld ,satan as lightning fall from heaven4 ,the reference in both of these passages is not to ,satan's moral degeneration but rather to a great event when he was1 because of his sin1 driven from his place in glory and made to inhabit the earth and air 7,eph4 #b3b2 #f3ab2 ,i ,pet4 #e3h74 ,yet he was granted the privilege of access to the presence of ,god 7,job #a3f2 ,rev4 #ab3aj74 ,referring to these texts3 ,in the first two chapters of the book of ,job1 ,satan is seen appearing in the midst of other heavenly beings1 before the presence of ,jehovah2 and there seems to be nothing unusual in the presence of ,satan in this celestial company4 ,to the question of ,jehovah1 ,whence cometh thou8 he replies1 from going to and fro in the earth and from walking up and down in it4 ,from this revelation the important information is given that ,satan1 while inhabiting the earth and air1 is free to appear in the presence of ,god4 ,his occupation of the earth and air is also taught in ,eph4 #f3aa1 #ab4 ,here believers are addressed as follows3 ,put on the whole armor of ,god1 that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil4 ,for our wrestling is not against flesh and blood1 but against the principalities1 against the powers1 against the world rulers of this darkness1 against the spiritual host of wickedness in the heavenlies 7,r4,v474 ,another injunction to believers is contained in ,i ,pet4 #e3h1 #i3 ,be sober1 be watchful3 your adversary the devil1 as a roaring lion1 walketh about1 seeking whom he may devour3 whom withstand steadfast in your faith4 ,these two latter passages1 taken together1 restate with greater emphasis the revelation in regard to the present abode of ,satan4 ,that the earth and the air are his present abode must be accepted on the testimony of ,scripture3 in spite of the almost universal impression that he is now in hell4 ,in addition to this statement in regard to ,satan's fall1 the passage in ,isaiah1 which is under consideration1 reveals two aspects of his present activity4 ,he is first seen seeking to establish a throne for himself1 and then as the promoter of confusion and terror in the ,divine purpose in the world4 ,this is followed with another statement of the certainty of his final judgment and banishment4 ,the crime of ,satan is concisely stated in the fourteenth verse as being a purpose in his heart to become like the ,most ,high4 ,his heart was lifted up because of his beauty2 he who was created and placed as the ,covering ,cherub1 with the high honor of guarding the throne of ,god1 has corrupted his wisdom by reason of his brightness2 he has struck at the throne he was set to protect4 ,it was a purpose in his heart which would require the time of the ages to wholly destroy4 ,there could be but one ,most ,high1 and the purpose of ,satan to become like him could1 naturally1 be nothing less than an attempt to dethrone the ,almighty4 ,the secret purpose in his heart reveals his method to be1 not a violent attack upon the throne3 but1 like ,absalom's1 to steal the hearts of the unfaithful in the kingdom1 and1 through subtlety1 to gain a government4 ,he would thus become an object of worship1 and attract attention from other beings to himself4 ,to accomplish this1 a hindering attitude must be assumed toward the purpose and projects of the ,most ,high4 ,no adequate appreciation can be formed of ,satan's present projects and devices1 and the motive that prompts them1 without a clear understanding of his age-abiding attitude toward the ,person of ,god4 ,there are two prominent events revealed in the history of ,satan1 falling within the period of time when he proposed in his heart to become like the ,most ,high1 and his yet future banishment and execution4 ,the first of these was his meeting with and triumph over the first ,adam2 when he wrested the scepter of authority from man1 by securing man's loyal obedience to his own suggestion and counsel4 ,this earthly scepter ,satan held by the full right of conquest1 seemingly without challenge from ,jehovah1 until the first advent of the ,second ,adam2 this meeting of the ,second ,adam1 ,christ1 with ,satan being the second great event which is revealed during this period in his career4 ,only the unfolding of the coming ages can reveal the magnitude of this terrible conflict4 ,a glimpse is revealed from time to time of the unceasing effort of ,satan to triumph over the ,second ,adam1 as he had done over the first4 ,he met ,him in the wilderness1 offering ,him all he had gained from the first ,adam1 even the kingdom of this world2 if only he might become like the ,most ,high1 and receive the obedient worship and adoration of the ,second ,adam1 the ,son of ,god4 ,again he is seen voicing his attempt to dissuade the ,christ from ,his sacrificial death1 through the impetuous ,peter2 and still again in the crushing attack upon the very life of ,jesus in the ,garden1 when1 it would seem1 ,satan attempted to take that life before it could be offered for the sins of the world4 ,however victorious ,satan may have been over the first ,adam1 it is certain that he met a complete and final judgment and sentence in the ,second ,adam2 and that bruising of the serpent's head was realized which was a part of the ,adamic covenant4 ,referring to ,his ,cross1 ,jesus said1 ,now is the judgment of this world1 now shall the prince of this world be cast out 7,jno4 #ab3ca74 ,and again in ,jno4 #af3aa1 ,of judgment because the prince of this world is judged4 ,still another ,scriptural testimony to this great defeat of ,satan is recorded in ,col4 #b3ac-ae3 ,having forgiven you all trespasses2 blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us1 which was contrary to us1 and took it out of the way1 nailing it to the cross2 and having spoiled principalities and powers1 he made a show of them openly1 triumphing over them in it4 ,it is1 therefore1 clear that1 though ,satan may have triumphed over the first ,adam and thereby become the god and prince of this world2 he himself was perfectly and finally triumphed over and judged by the second ,adam in the ,cross4 ,it is quite possible1 however1 that a sentence may be pronounced and made known some time before that sentence is actually executed4 ,during such an interval a criminal is said to be under sentence awaiting his execution1 which some higher authority has decreed4 ,this period of sentence is that in which ,satan appears in the present age2 which age had its beginning with the ,cross4 ,execution of this sentence would have banished him forever4 ,that he is not banished is revealed in the fact that he1 even after his judgment in the ,cross1 is referred to in ,scripture as still being in authority over this world4 ,an illustration of ,satan's present relation to this world may be taken from the history of ,saul and ,david4 ,it is natural that ,david1 the first to occupy the ,davidic throne1 should be a type of ,christ1 the last and most glorious occupant of that throne 7,luke #a3ca-cc74 ,as there was a period between the anointing of ,david and the final banishment of ,saul1 in which ,saul reigned as a usurper1 though under ,divine sentence and ,david was the ,god-appointed king3 in like manner there is now a similar period in which ,satan rules as a usurper1 though under sentence2 and the actual occupation of the throne by ,christ is still future4 ,in this period ,satan1 the rejected monarch1 still rules2 hunting to the death all those who have allied themselves with ,christ1 the ,god-anointed ,king4 ,why ,satan is thus allowed to continue his reign is perhaps but partly revealed4 ,the real ,church which is the ,bride of ,christ1 is to sit with ,him upon ,his throne 7,rev4 #c3ba2 ,i ,cor4 #f3b1 #c2 ,matt4 #ai3bh71 and the present age must continue until that glorious heavenly people are gathered out from the world by regeneration4 ,again1 it seems the course of ,divine wisdom to make a sufficient and final trial of every claim of ,his adversaries2 and when this age1 with all its developments1 shall have passed by1 every mouth will be stopped1 and the whole world and ,satan will know their own failure and sin before ,god4 ,they will stand self-condemned2 and nothing could accomplish this but the testing1 by actual trial1 of all the self-sufficient claims of ,satan and man4 ,the sin of man has brought him under sentence too2 and grace alone withholds his immediate execution 7,jno4 #c3ah2 ,rom4 #e3ah1 #ai74 ,though the day of execution is1 in the purpose of ,god delayed2 it is1 nevertheless1 sure2 and the time is fast approaching when an awful destruction of self-enthroned beings will be executed2 and ,he alone shall reign1 whose right it is to reign2 for ,he must reign until ,he hath put all enemies under ,his feet 7,i ,cor4 #ae3be74 ,the ,kingly ,son shall yet arise and claim the nations of the earth and break them with a rod of iron1 and dash them in pieces as a potter's vessel 7,ps4 #b3i74 ,it would seem that ,satan cherishes the expectation of actually accomplishing his purpose until near the end of his career 7though the demon testimony of ,matt4 #h3bi is suggestive on this point74 ,preceding his banishment to the pit1 he is violently cast out of heaven and into the earth1 according to ,rev4 #ab3g-ab2 and his activity1 from that time on is limited to that sphere4 ,he is no longer granted access to ,god4 ,the passage is as follows3 ,and there was war in heaven3 ,michael and his angels fought against the dragon2 and the dragon fought and his angels1 and prevailed not2 neither was there place found any more in heaven4 ,and the great dragon was cast out1 that old serpent1 called the ,devil1 and ,satan1 which deceiveth the whole world3 he was cast out into the earth1 and his angels were cast out with him4 ,and ,i heard a loud voice saying in heaven1 ,now is come salvation and strength1 and the kingdom of our ,god1 and the power of ,his ,christ3 for the accuser of our brethren is cast down1 which accuseth them before ,god day and night4 ,and they overcame him by the blood of the ,lamb1 and by the word of their testimony2 and they loved not their lives unto the death4 ,therefore rejoice1 ye heavens1 and ye that dwell in them4 ,woe to the inhabitants of the earth and of the sea6 for the devil is come down unto you1 having great wrath1 because he knoweth that he hath but a short time4 ,here ,satan is pictured as being in great wrath as he is banished from heaven into the earth1 knowing that he has but a short time4 ,after this short time1 which is a terrible tribulation in the earth1 ,satan is bound and cast into a pit2 this being an event in the glorious return of ,christ to the earth1 where ,he will reign on the throne of ,his ,father ,david for a thousand years4 ,satan is confined to the pit during the same period1 at the end of which he is released for a little season4 ,he then gathers an army for a last and terrible attack upon the government and people of ,god1 which ends in his being banished to the lake of fire1 where he meets his final and long predicted doom4 ,these events are clearly stated in their order in the nineteenth and twentieth chapters of ,revelation4 ,satan is thus revealed as having been first created perfect in all his ways1 mighty in power1 and full of beauty and wisdom4 ,while thus privileged1 he proposed a stupendous project in his heart--himself to become like the ,most ,high4 ,though cast down and yet having access to ,god1 he is seen wresting the world scepter from man2 and ruling as the god of this world1 until the judgment of the ,cross2 and after that he still rules as a usurper4 ,at the end of the age he is cast out of his access to heaven1 into the earth2 from thence to the pit2 and1 finally1 is banished to the lake of fire forever4 ,this review of the career of ,satan is made at this point in order to call attention to the direct and mighty influence he exerts upon the affairs of this world according to his varying positions and freedom4 ,after ,satan rebelled1 humanity1 too1 was thrown into an abnormal and almost universal attitude of independence toward ,god2 and this continues beyond the ,cross with increasing confusion and darkness1 to the end of the age4 ,the only exception to this rebellion is the little company of believers2 and how terribly real is the tendency to the self-governed life of the old nature1 even among these6 ,when ,satan is cast out of heaven and limited to the earth1 there is tribulation upon the earth of which ,jesus speaks in ,matt4 #bd3ba1 and which is also referred to in ,dan4 #ab3a4 ,when ,satan is bound and put in the pit1 and the promised ,kingdom of ,christ has come1 there is peace covering the earth as waters cover the face of the deep4 ,can it be doubted that this mighty being is a living power1 acting directly over the affairs of men1 even in this self-glorying age8 ,chapter ,,ii4 ,the ,ages4 ,it is a conspicuous fact that the comparatively few errors and inconsistencies in translation1 found in the ,english ,authorized ,version of the ,new ,testament1 serve to hinder1 directly or indirectly1 any clear understanding of the teachings of ,scripture in regard to the conditions and relationships of the world at the present time4 ,even the revision did not greatly relieve this confusion beyond the addition of some helpful marginal renderings4 ,it would seem1 if it were possible1 that ,satan1 the author of confusion and the only one advantaged by it1 had been able in some subtle way to keep in darkness that which would otherwise be light2 thus preventing a revelation of his own projects4 ,the continuation of these misleading translations is most evident in the unqualified use of the ,english word world4 ,the word which1 in common usage1 has a limited meaning is used1 by the translators1 as the one ,english rendering for at least four widely differing ideas in the original4 ,so that1 if the truth contained in this important body of ,scripture is to be understood1 the student must not only know the various meanings which are expressed by the one word1 but also be able to determine the correct use of the word in any single instance4 ,this necessary effort to understand the real meaning of many passages has1 therefore1 placed the simple truth they contain beyond the average reader of the ,bible4 ,the ,english word world as used in the ,new ,testament may mean a distinct period of time1 commonly known as an age 7as its original is a few times translated72 or it may refer to the things created3 the earth1 its inhabitants1 or their institutions4 ,two of these original meanings are used in connection with this present time4 ,first1 as to an age1 or period of time3 ,the ages are often referred to in ,scripture1 and the study of the exact conditions and purposes of each of them is not fanciful3 but is rather the only adequate foundation for any true knowledge of the ,bible4 ,not all the ages can be taken up in this ,chapter1 but only such as may be confused with the present one4 ,the age of law1 which began with the giving of the law at ,mount ,sinai and ended1 approximately1 with the death of ,christ1 is mentioned by ,zacharias in his prophecy at the birth of ,john3 ,as he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets which have been since the age began 7,lu4 #a3gj74 ,the same period is referred to by ,peter in ,acts #c3ba3 ,whom the heavens must receive until the restitution of all things1 which ,god hath spoken by the mouth of all his prophets since the age began4 ,these references1 it will be seen1 are not to the creation of the world1 as the ,english rendering would indicate2 but to the beginning of that particular period in which the prophets spake4 ,the present age of grace1 in which the grace of ,god has had its appearing unto salvation1 began where the age of law ended1 or with the death of ,christ2 and will continue until ,he comes again4 ,the duration of this age is suggested by the communion table1 which1 being peculiar to this age1 will continue to its end4 ,of this sacrament it is said3 ,as oft as ye eat this bread1 and drink this cup1 ye do show the ,lord's death till he come 7,i ,cor4 #aa3bf74 ,as a distinct period of time this age is mentioned by the word world no less than forty times in the ,new ,testament4 ,a few of these passages follow3 ,and whosoever speaketh a word against the son of man1 it shall be forgiven him3 but whosoever speaketh against the ,holy ,spirit1 it shall not be forgiven him1 neither in this world 7age71 neither in the world 7age7 to come 7,matt4 #ab3cb74 ,and as he sat upon the ,mount of ,olives1 the disciples came to him privately1 saying1 ,tell us1 when shall these things be8 and what shall be the sign of thy coming1 and of the end of the world 7age78 7,matt4 #bd3c74 ,the field is the world 7men72 the good seed are the children of the kingdom2 but the tares are the children of the wicked one2 the enemy that sowed them is the devil2 the harvest is the end of the world 7age72 and the reapers are the angels 7,matt4 #ac3ch1 #ci74 ,and1 lo1 ,i am with you alway1 even unto the end of the world 7age7 7,matt4 #bh3bj74 ,for the children of this world 7age7 are in their generation wiser than the children of light 7,lu4 #af3h74 ,and set him at his own right hand in the heavenlies1 far above all principality1 and power1 and might1 and dominion1 and every name that is named1 not only in this world 7age71 but that which is to come 7,eph4 #a3bj1 #ba74 ,we should live soberly1 righteously1 and godly in this present world 7age7 7,titus #b3ab74 ,by these and many other passages1 it may be seen that the present age is a particular limited period of time in which special conditions are to prevail1 and definite purposes are to be realized4 ,judging from the mass of ,christian writings and from utterances in public address and prayer1 this age is assumed by many1 without question1 to be the ,kingdom of ,christ2 though no ,scripture is found to warrant that conclusion4 ,there is a kingdom of ,god which embraces the entire universe1 over which ,god is enthroned1 and to this kingdom every enemy must finally be brought back to original subjection and adjustment1 or be banished forever4 ,this final victory is described in ,i ,cor4 #ae3bd1 #be3 ,then cometh the end1 when ,he 7,christ7 shall have delivered up the kingdom to ,god1 even the ,father2 when ,he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power4 ,for he must reign1 till he hath put all enemies under ,his feet4 ,there is a still more extensive body of ,scripture which anticipates a literal kingdom of righteousness and peace upon the earth2 this theme being the burden of the ,old ,testament prophets1 and was announced by ,john ,baptist1 by ,christ and ,his disciples4 ,this announcement was simple and plain3 ,the kingdom is at hand4 ,the expression at hand here used is significant2 indicating not necessarily the immediate future1 though the kingdom was definitely offered to that generation2 but that the earthly kingdom was the next event which had been clearly announced by the prophets4 ,when the ,messiah had been positively rejected by the ,jews1 ,he began1 alone1 without even the sympathy of ,his disciples1 to unfold this forthcoming mystery-age1 which had been kept secret in the councils of ,god1 and which was more perfectly revealed to ,paul1 the first messenger to the ,gentiles4 ,of this revelation of a hitherto unknown age1 ,paul writes in ,eph4 #c3a-aa3 ,for this cause ,i ,paul1 the prisoner of ,jesus ,christ for you ,gentiles1 if ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of ,god which is given to me to you-ward3 how that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery2 7as ,i wrote afore in few words1 whereby1 when ye read1 ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of ,christ7 which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men1 as it is now revealed unto ,his holy apostles and prophets by the ,spirit2 that the ,gentiles should be fellow-heirs1 and of the same body1 and partakers of ,his promise in ,christ by the gospel3 whereof ,i was made a minister1 according to the gift of the grace of ,god given unto me by the effectual working of ,his power4 ,unto me1 who am less than the least of all saints1 is this grace given1 that ,i should preach among the ,gentiles the unsearchable riches of ,christ2 and to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery1 which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in ,god1 who created all things by ,jesus ,christ3 to the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of ,god1 according to the eternal purpose which he purposed in ,christ ,jesus our ,lord4 ,the same truth is emphasized in ,rom4 #af3be3 ,now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel1 and the preaching of ,jesus ,christ1 according to the revelation of the mystery1 which was kept secret since the world began4 ,this new age of the ,gentiles was also to have its hope centered in ,jesus ,christ1 but in ,his sacrificial death rather than ,his kingly reign4 ,it was to be an age in which the ,gentiles were to be visited and a people called out from them for ,his own ,person 7,acts #ae3ad72 and these people1 who are the real ,church1 were to be built together upon a rock 7,matt4 #af3ah72 their glorious salvation and final heavenly perfection were to rest only on ,his perfect and finished work for them4 ,by this ,divine transformation1 ,he would secure1 out of all nations1 both ,gentiles and ,jews1 a heavenly people2 wholly fitted in quality to be ,his own body1 ,his heavenly bride1 and a kingdom of priests unto ,god4 ,all this1 though not revealed in past ages1 was known in the councils of ,god 7,acts #ae3ah7 and is parenthetical in the history of the ,jew4 ,it is a delay of their earthly kingdom and in no way its fulfillment or substitute4 ,want of knowledge of the right divisions of truth is also evident in the general impression that ,god has cast off ,his people1 the ,jews1 and that the ,gentiles are their rightful successors and the recipients of the blessings of their unfulfilled prophecies4 ,this confusion is due to a failure to distinguish between this and the following age4 ,two distinct lines of seed were promised to ,abraham4 ,one1 an earthly seed1 to be like the dust of the earth1 without number 7,gen4 #ac3af71 centered wholly in the earth by a relationship of physical generation3 the other seed were likened to the stars of heaven1 without number 7,gen4 #ae3e71 centered wholly in the heavenlies by a relationship of ,spirit regeneration1 which is the present answer of ,god to all true ,abrahamic faith 7,rom4 #d3a-e74 ,the earthly people found their origin in the physical fatherhood of ,abraham3 while the heavenly people find theirs in the shed blood of ,christ4 ,one had an earthly history from ,abraham to their dispersion among the ,gentiles--a history which will yet be resumed and the everlasting covenants fulfilled in the faithfulness of ,god3 the other has a transient earthly pilgrimage from the ,cross to their completion2 when they will be caught up to meet and marry their ,bridegroom1 and be forever with the ,lord 7,i ,thes4 #d3ac-ag74 ,to one1 ,christ is the coming glorious ,messiah1 who will actually sit upon the throne of ,his father1 ,david 7,lu4 #a3ca-cc71 in a literal earthly kingdom 7else all ,scripture language fails73 to the other1 ,he is the glorious ,head of the ,body1 and coming ,bridegroom4 ,one of these lines of seed are the favored subjects in the earthly kingdom3 while the other is to be in ,his bosom as a bride1 and be associated with ,him in ,his reign 7,i ,cor4 #f3b2 ,rev4 #c3ba74 ,as these two lines of seed are everywhere distinct1 there must be at least two separate ages for the accomplishment of these ends4 ,what1 then1 are these ages8 ,if it is believed that an earthly kingdom1 with ,messiah as ,king1 is promised the ,jew1 it must also be admitted that the ,jew is not now enjoying that kingdom2 nor has he had any semblance of a kingdom in all the centuries since his dispersion among the ,gentiles4 ,this age cannot1 therefore1 be the predicted earthly kingdom of ,christ4 ,turning to ,acts #ae3ac-ah1 a description of the present age and that which will follow is found4 ,the passage is here given3 ,and after they had held their peace1 ,james answered1 saying1 ,men and brethren1 hearken unto me3 ,simeon hath declared how ,god at the first did visit the ,gentiles1 to take out of them a people for his name4 ,and to this agree the words of the prophets2 as it is written1 after this ,i will return1 and will build again the tabernacle of ,david1 which is fallen down2 and ,i will build again the ruins thereof1 and ,i will set it up2 that the residue of men might seek after the ,lord1 and all the ,gentiles1 upon whom my name is called1 saith the ,lord1 who doeth all these things4 ,known unto ,god are all ,his works from the beginning of the world4 ,it is recorded that1 after ,his resurrection1 ,jesus was seen for forty days by ,his apostles whom ,he had chosen2 and during this time ,he was speaking to them concerning the ,kingdom4 ,it was natural1 therefore1 for them to inquire1 at the end of those days1 ,lord1 wilt ,thou at this time restore again the kingdom unto ,israel8 7,acts #a3f7 and they had full warrant from the prophets to expect that great event when their ,messiah came4 ,they had not1 however1 grasped the meaning of the then dawning age of the gathering out of the ,bride1 and in this passage they are seen adjusting themselves to the newly revealed ,divine program1 and recognizing the ,god-appointed delay in the predicted earthly kingdom4 ,in ,acts #ae3 just referred to1 the purpose and order of two distinct ages is set forth4 ,the first age is described as the visiting of the ,gentiles1 that from among them a heavenly people may be called out1 and is a description of this present age1 which had its beginning in the very generation in which this passage was written2 for no previous age could meet these conditions4 ,the second age1 here described1 is that of a distinct rebuilding of the ,davidic order1 which is clearly separated from the former age by the return of ,christ4 ,this same order of events is also carefully maintained wherever these events are referred to in ,scripture1 and any confusion of the order is a positive violence to the truth4 ,the revealed consummation of this ,gentile age is always the return of ,christ1 who comes first to receive ,his own2 and then to render judgment upon all the nations and to bind the enemy and place him in the pit4 ,the same return of ,christ is the necessary preliminary event before any kingdom of righteousness and peace can be realized upon the earth4 ,no amount of enlightened sentiment can establish a kingdom without a king2 and no universal blessedness can be experienced in this world until the enemy is dethroned and banished4 ,sadly has the world failed to include these two necessary ,divine movements1 in its vain dream and godless attempt at a perfected universe6 ,the purpose of this age is then clearly defined as the visiting of the ,gentiles to call out of them a people for ,his name2 the called out people being the true ,church 7as that word signifies71 which is made up of all the saved ones who have been saved since the ,day of ,pentecost1 at which time the ,spirit came to unite them into one body and to indwell them4 ,they are the heavenly people1 regenerate and complete in ,christ1 their ,bridegroom and living ,head4 ,when this age is considered as the ,kingdom of ,christ it is usually thought of as in a state of development4 ,this is a necessary conclusion in view of the presence of sin and failure in the world4 ,but the setting up of the earthly kingdom is never described as the result of a process4 ,scripture deals conclusively with this question4 ,in ,dan4 #b3cd-ce1 an image is described1 which is defined as being a symbol of the then dawning ,gentile world power 7which is still continuing1 ,lu4 #ba3bd74 ,the image is here made to represent both the development of world rule and its terrible and final ending4 ,the image is seen to be gradually developing from one world government to another until the form of the image is wholly completed4 ,its ending is then precipitated by a shattering blow from a ,stone1 cut out without hands4 ,by the same inspired interpretation1 the ,stone becomes both a symbol of superhuman power1 being cut out without hands2 and a type of ,christ1 the ,ancient of ,days1 in ,his coming to the earth as a resistless ,monarch2 banishing all rule and authority4 ,a portion of the whole passage reads thus3 ,thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands1 which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay1 and brake them to pieces4 ,then was the iron1 the clay1 the brass1 the silver1 and the gold1 broken to pieces together1 and became like the chaff of the summer threshing-floor2 and the wind carried them away1 that no place was found for them3 and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain1 and filled the whole earth 7,dan4 #b3cd-ce74 ,this being a ,divinely interpreted prophecy as to the extent and ending of the present ,gentile age1 it should be noted that the ,stone 7,christ7 strikes the image 7the world power7 with one destructive blow1 and at the time when it has become fully developed4 ,the blow is struck on the part of the image which is last formed4 ,the great image is thus instantly and violently broken to pieces and is even blown away like the chaff of the summer threshing-floor4 ,in like manner1 according to this prophecy1 the whole ,gentile rule will suddenly be broken and will vanish4 ,it should also be noted from these symbols that the ,stone does not become a mountain and fill the whole earth until the great image has been scattered to dust4 ,from this it is certain that there can be no development of the ,kingdom of ,christ on the earth before the final breaking of the kingdoms of the earth4 ,this same order is recognized throughout all prophecy4 ,the king suddenly returns as lightning shining from one part of heaven to the other2 ,satan is violently seized and cast into prison2 and a nation is born at once4 ,the second ,psalm connects the kingly reign of ,christ--the time when ,he is set upon the holy hill of ,zion--with the time when ,he shall claim the nations of the earth and break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces as a potter's vessel4 ,also in ,matt4 #be3ca1 when ,he sits on the throne of ,his glory the blessed of the ,father are called to enter the kingdom prepared for them from the foundation of the world4 ,and in ,rev4 #ab3g-ab1 where ,satan is cast out into the earth and the execution of his sentence is begun1 the announcement is made by a great voice in heaven1 ,now is come salvation1 and strength1 and the kingdom of our ,god1 and the power of ,his ,christ4 ,there is no evidence of a gradual process here2 all is sudden and decisive4 ,again1 this age is not the coming earthly kingdom for nowhere are the promised conditions of that kingdom now to be found4 ,the ,old ,testament prophecies contain long and detailed descriptions of that glorious time2 ,god's ancient people shall become the chosen nation1 restored to their own land2 the enemy shall be banished2 the earth shall be purified1 and blossom as a rose4 ,the wolf also shall dwell with the lamb1 and the leopard shall lie down with the kid2 and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together2 and a little child shall lead them4 ,and the cow and the bear shall feed2 their young ones shall lie down together1 and the lion shall eat straw like the ox4 ,and the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp1 and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice den4 ,they shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain3 for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the ,lord1 as the waters cover the sea 7,isa4 #aa3f-i74 ,and in that day will ,i make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field1 and with the fowls of heaven1 and with the creeping things of the ground3 and ,i will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth1 and will make them to lie down safely 7,hos4 #b3ah74 ,and it shall come to pass in that day1 that the mountains shall drop down new wine1 and the hills shall flow with milk1 and all the rivers of ,judah shall flow with waters1 and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the ,lord1 and shall water the valley of ,shittim 7,joel #c3ah74 ,sing and rejoice1 ,o daughter of ,zion3 for1 lo1 ,i come1 and ,i will dwell in the midst of thee1 saith the ,lord4 ,and many nations shall be joined to the ,lord in that day1 and shall be my people3 and ,i will dwell in the midst of thee1 and thou shalt know that the ,lord of hosts hath sent me unto thee 7,zech4 #b3aj1 #aa74 ,thus saith the ,lord of hosts2 in those days it shall come to pass1 that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations1 even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a ,jew1 saying1 ,we will go with you3 for we have heard that ,god is with you 7,zech4 #h3bc74 ,for behold1 ,i create new heavens and a new earth3 and the former shall not be remembered1 nor come into mind4 ,but be ye glad and rejoice forever in that which ,i create3 for1 behold1 ,i create ,jerusalem a rejoicing1 and her people a joy4 ,and ,i will rejoice in ,jerusalem1 and joy in my people3 and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her1 nor the voice of crying4 ,there shall be no more thence an infant of days1 nor an old man that hath not filled his days3 for the child shall die an hundred years old2 but the sinner being an hundred years old shall be accursed4 ,and they shall build houses1 and inhabit them2 and they shall plant vineyards1 and eat the fruit of them 7,isa4 #fe3ag-ba74 ,then the eyes of the blind shall be opened1 and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped4 ,then shall the lame man leap as an hart1 and the tongue of the dumb sing3 for in the wilderness shall waters break out1 and streams in the desert 7,isa4 #ce3e1 #f74 ,but this shall be the covenant that ,i will make with the house of ,israel4 ,after those days1 saith the ,lord1 ,i will put my law in their inward parts1 and write it in their hearts2 and will be their ,god and they shall be my people4 ,and they shall teach no more every man his neighbor1 and every man his brother1 saying1 ,know the ,lord3 for they shall all know me1 from the least of them unto the greatest of them1 saith the ,lord3 for ,i will forgive their iniquity1 and ,i will remember their sins no more 7,jer4 #ca3 #cc1 #cd74 ,for unto us a child is born1 unto us a son is given3 and the government shall be upon ,his shoulder3 and ,his name shall be called ,wonderful1 ,counsellor1 ,the mighty ,god1 ,the everlasting ,father1 ,the ,prince of ,peace4 ,of the increase of ,his government and peace there shall be no end1 upon the throne of ,david1 and upon the kingdom1 to order it1 and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even forever4 ,the zeal of the ,lord of hosts will perform this 7,isa4 #i3f1 #g74 ,he shall be great1 and shall be called the ,son of the ,highest3 and the ,lord ,god shall give unto ,him the throne of ,his ,father ,david3 and ,he shall reign over the house of ,jacob forever2 and of ,his kingdom there shall be no end 7,lu4 #a3cb1 #cc74 ,and ,he shall set up an ensign for the nations1 and shall assemble the outcasts of ,israel1 and gather together the dispersed of ,judah from the four corners of the earth 7,isa4 #aa3ab74 ,and ,he shall judge among many people1 and rebuke strong nations afar off2 and they shall beat their swords into plowshares1 and their spears into pruning hooks3 nation shall not lift up a sword against nation1 neither shall they learn war any more4 ,but they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree2 and none shall make them afraid3 for the mouth of the ,lord of hosts hath spoken it 7,micah #d3c1d74 ,though blessings abound in the individual heart where ,christ is enthroned1 yet not one trace of this glorious transformed earth can be found in the present ,gentile age4 ,chapter ,,iii4 ,the ,course of ,this ,age4 ,it is necessary to distinguish between rightly dividing the word of truth1 and a critical attitude toward that word2 the former being an important duty in the believer's life1 according to ,,ii ,tim4 #b3ae1 while the latter may easily become a wicked and misleading display of unbelief and the wisdom of this world 7,i ,cor4 #a3ai74 ,personal interest in the ,word of ,god usually begins with the first understanding of its real divisions2 and no one is prepared to understand the providence of ,god who does not first come to know something of the purpose of ,god as marked off by these great divisions4 ,especially is this necessary1 as has been stated1 for any clear understanding of the present age4 ,again1 the power and force of the whole body of ,scripture must depend1 in a large measure1 upon a belief in unfulfilled prophecy4 ,such a belief is not general1 even among ,christians4 ,they believe that ,christ camp in the flesh1 suffered1 died1 and rose again1 because that is all now a matter of history2 but that belief is not greatly influenced by the fact that this was all exactly foretold by the prophets4 ,let those who are free to condemn the pious ,jew for not recognizing the fulfillment of prophecy in the first advent of ,christ1 beware lest they fail to rightly interpret the signs of these times1 or look with positive unbelief upon the stupendous events that1 according to prophecy1 are imminent to-day4 ,it seems a sore test of faith to believe that which is predicted for the present age1 though those predictions are being fulfilled in every particular4 ,this prevailing attitude of unbelief usually arises from one of two errors2 either ,satan has been so estimated that it seems impossible for him to be the promoter of anything that is moral or good 7of this error more will be said in the following chapters73 or the exact meaning and purpose of this age has been disbelieved or misunderstood2 and because of these conditions many enthusiastic ,christians are found to be1 not only working toward unscriptural and hopeless ends1 but are actually contributing to the confusion and darkness that is prevalent to-day4 ,the purpose and course of this age are not matters of prediction alone4 ,almost two thousand years of history may be considered in the light of these predictions2 and while the age is not yet complete1 and much that is reserved for the last days is still future1 enough of prophecy has now been fulfilled to indicate the certain fulfillment of all4 ,since there has been no universal conversion of men in even the most favored locality1 it is evident that1 thus far1 there has been a separating and calling out of a few from the many2 and the ,divine purpose1 as revealed in ,scripture1 which is to gather out a people from the ,gentiles for ,his own name1 has been verified4 ,the blessing of ,god has been upon world-wide evangelism3 rather than upon any fruitless attempts at world-wide conversion2 for the individual or church that has become self-centered has1 to that degree1 sacrificed the power and blessing of the presence of ,christ which was promised in ,matt4 #bh3bj3 ,go ye therefore1 and disciple all nations--,lo1 ,i am with you alway1 even unto the end of the age4 ,again1 the formation of the ,kingdom has not been discernible in the present age4 ,the ,jews1 to whom alone the promises of an earthly kingdom belong1 have continued a separate people under the unseen hand of ,god1 without a country1 or a vestige of national life4 ,certainly none of the predicted and necessary events accompanying the establishment of their kingdom have been experienced1 nor is there any trace of its promised blessings4 ,the fact that some ,jews are now organizing and looking toward their native land1 argues nothing for this age1 more than that its end is very near1 and that the way for their coming ,messiah and national glory is being prepared4 ,just so1 the conspicuous fact that all the marvelous present development of the resources of the earth has been limited to about the last eightieth of the present history of the age is evidence that the earth's return to her former glory is already in preparation4 ,belief in the revealed course of this age is1 therefore1 based upon history as well as the predictions of ,scripture4 ,the present age is different from all others by reason of the admixture of opposing classes of people2 there being two distinct divisions 7not including the ,jew as a nation7 living and acting together1 who are1 nevertheless1 removed from each other by a degree that is immeasurable4 ,this fact necessitates many careful distinctions and special injunctions which are peculiar to the age4 ,the fact that these two widely differing classes are present together1 and are to continue so to the end of the age1 is the teaching of the seven parables in the thirteenth chapter of ,matthew4 ,very much1 therefore1 depends upon the correct interpretation of these parables4 ,their meaning has been somewhat hidden by the use of the word world where reference is made to this period of time2 and the fact that the conditions described are true of this age only1 has not been generally realized4 ,these seven parables are but a description of the unfolding and development of these mixed elements to be found in ,christendom throughout this age4 ,the same program is again proclaimed by ,christ1 from the ,glory1 in the messages to the seven churches of ,asia 7,rev4 #b and #c74 ,here are seven letters to organized existing churches2 yet these messages also reveal an exact outline of the history of ,christendom for this entire age2 and there is perfect agreement in order and detail between the parables of ,matthew #ac and the letters of ,revelation #b and #c4 ,the first two parables are interpreted by ,christ ,himself1 and the interpretation of these sheds light on all that remains4 ,christ is the sower in both the first and second of these parables1 and the sowing is continued by ,his messengers throughout this age4 ,the field is the world of men1 which reveals a marked change from the responsibility of the ,jewish age that was then closing2 and the results of the sowing are most definite3 not all the good seed sown comes to fruitage2 and the wheat and the tares grow together until the end of the age4 ,this interpretation is not fanciful1 for it is given by ,christ ,himself2 and the following parables must necessarily agree with these4 ,the third and fourth are of the mustard seed and the measure of meal4 ,though commonly interpreted to mean the world-wide development of the ,church and the permeating influence of the ,gospel1 in the light of the interpretation of the previous parables they can mean only the mixture of evil with that which began as small as a mustard seed and as pure as meal4 ,the fifth parable is of a treasure hid in a field1 which pictures the earthly people in the world2 while their real relation to ,christ is covered until the accomplishment of that which is revealed in the sixth4 ,here the same man1 the ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 sells all that ,he hath to purchase the ,church1 the pearl of great price1 for ,he loved the ,church1 and gave ,himself for it 7,eph4 #e3be72 the pearl1 by its formation and its power to reflect the light1 being a wonderful type of the ,church in her present formation and future place in glory4 ,both the treasure and the pearl are found in the world1 but do not include all of the world4 ,the last parable but restates the truth that the mixture of the good and the evil is to continue to the end of the age4 ,the highest ambition of the great missionary1 ,paul1 was to be all things to all men that he might save some1 not all4 ,he found that his preaching was a savor of death unto death as well as of life unto life 7,,ii ,cor4 #b3ae1 #af71 and he clearly states in ,,ii ,tim4 #c3ac1 ,and evil men shall wax worse and worse1 deceiving and being deceived4 ,christ also predicted that the end of this age should be marked by such sin as provoked the judgment of the flood3 ,but as the days of ,noe were1 so shall also the coming of the ,son of man be4 ,for as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking1 marrying and giving in marriage1 until the day that ,noe entered into the ark1 and knew not until the flood came1 and took them all away2 so shall also the coming of the ,son of man be 7,matt4 #bd3cg-ci74 ,this truth is often rejected as being pessimistic and disloyal to the progress of the world3 yet has not the history of the age verified the teaching8 ,and is not the coming glory nearer and more certain when depending upon ,his promised return in resistless power and splendor1 than when depending upon any human progress the world has ever known8 ,one is the majestic movement of the ,divine program in fulfillment of every covenant3 while the other is the vain dream of the world in its ignorance and disregard of the testimony of ,god4 ,because of the presence of these two classes in the world in this age1 there are two very distinct lines of ,scripture descriptive of them4 ,one body of ,scripture directly applies to and governs the wheat or heavenly people1 and one applies to the tares1 the children of the evil one4 ,the marvelous revelation of the believer's relation to ,christ and the heavenlies1 and his deliverance from any actual identification with this age1 though in it1 will be the subject of another chapter4 ,only the relation of the unregenerate to this world and to ,satan will be continued here4 ,as it has pleased ,satan to hide himself and all his projects from the unbelieving world1 that which ,god has revealed in all faithfulness will be received only by those who have unquestioning confidence in ,his ,word4 ,according to ,scripture1 the relation of the unbelieving to ,satan is far more vital than a mere pleasure-seeking allegiance4 ,on two occasions ,jesus spoke of the unsaved as the children of ,satan 7,matt4 #ac3ch2 ,jno4 #h3dd71 and ,paul so addressed ,elymas1 the sorcerer1 according to ,acts #ac3aj4 ,the same class is also twice called the children of disobedience 7,eph4 #b3b2 ,col4 #c3f71 and once it is called the children of wrath 7,eph4 #b3c74 ,it is evident that these are descriptions of the same class of people1 since both terms are employed together in ,eph4 #e3f3 ,let no man deceive you3 for because of these things cometh the wrath of ,god upon the children of disobedience4 ,the exact cause of that wrath is stated in ,rom4 #a3ah 7,r4,v473 ,for the wrath of ,god is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men1 who hinder the truth in unrighteousness2 the word hinder being the same as is used in ,,ii ,thes4 #b3g1 where the ,holy ,spirit is said to be restraining the working of lawlessness in this age4 ,therefore1 the willing neglect and disregard for the testimony of ,god by the world1 has allied them with ,satan1 and placed them under the wrath of ,god1 which must find its righteous execution in due time if grace is not accepted4 ,again1 ,satan is revealed as directing and empowering the children of disobedience3 ,and you hath he quickened1 who were dead in trespasses and sins2 wherein in times past ye walked according to the course of this age1 according to the prince of the power of the air1 the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience 7,eph4 #b3a1 #b74 ,the real force of this passage1 also1 is dependent upon the meaning of one word2 the word worketh being the same as is used in ,phil4 #b3ac1 where ,god is said to impart ,his wisdom and strength to the believer3 ,for it is ,god that worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure4 ,additional light may be had as to the reality of this relationship from the following passages in which the same original word is used3 ,and there are diversities of operations1 but it is the same ,god that worketh all in all 7,i ,cor4 #ab3f72 ,but all these 7gifts7 worketh that one and the selfsame ,spirit1 dividing to every man severally as he will 7,i ,cor4 #ab3aa72 ,and what is the exceeding greatness of ,his power to usward who believe1 according to the working of ,his mighty power1 which ,he wrought in ,christ when ,he raised ,him from the dead1 and set ,him at ,his own right hand in the heavenlies 7,eph4 #a3ai-bj72 ,for ,he that wrought effectually in ,peter to the apostleship of the circumcision1 the same was mighty in me toward the ,gentiles 7,gal4 #b3h72 ,whereunto ,i also labor1 striving according to ,his working1 which worketh in me mightily 7,col4 #a3bi72 ,now unto ,him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think1 according to his power that worketh in us 7,eph4 #c3bj74 ,it is also said in regard to the energizing power of ,satan1 using the same original word3 ,for the mystery of iniquity doth already work 7,,ii ,thes4 #b3g72 ,for when we were in the flesh1 the motions of sins1 which were by the law1 did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death 7,rom4 #g3e74 ,in the last two passages quoted1 the meaning is1 like the preceding passages1 of an imparted energy1 and is1 therefore1 most suggestive4 ,it may then be concluded from the testimony of ,scripture that ,satan imparts his wisdom and strength to the unbelieving in the same manner as the power of ,god is imparted to the believer by the ,holy ,spirit4 ,there is1 however1 no revelation as to the comparative degree of strength imparted by each4 ,it should be further noted in this connection that this impartation of energizing power from ,satan is not toward a limited few who might be said1 because of some strange conduct1 to be possessed of a demon2 but is the common condition of all who are yet unsaved1 and are1 therefore1 still in the power of darkness4 ,the relation between the unregenerate and ,satan is still more vital1 according to the original from which ,i ,jno4 #e3ai is translated4 ,the ,revised ,version renders it1 with marginal note1 as follows3 ,we know that we are of ,god1 and the whole world lieth in the evil one4 ,in this passage there are two startling revelations in regard to this relationship4 ,first3 the word in is the same as is used everywhere of the believer when he is said to be in ,christ1 and in the case of the believer it signifies an organic union to ,christ--as a branch is in the vine1 so the believer is in ,christ4 ,though the word1 when used of the unregenerate1 probably cannot mean the same degree of organic life-relationship as exists between ,christ and the believer1 yet it does denote a deep relationship2 and ,satan is the light1 inspiration1 and power1 of all those whom he energizes4 ,the second revelation in the passage is found in the word lieth--,the whole world lieth in the evil one4 ,it might as well be translated lieth asleep2 for its condition is not only a fixed position in the evil one1 but is also a condition of unconsciousness4 ,the saved ones are said to be in the ,father's hand where no created thing can pluck them out 7,jno4 #aj3bi71 and underneath are the everlasting arms3 so the great mass of unsaved humanity is in the arms of ,satan2 and by his subtlety they are all unconscious of their position and relation4 ,this is not at all strange4 ,even the believer has no present power to discern his glorious position and security in the ,father's hand1 apart from the assurance of the written ,word4 ,much less1 then1 can the unbeliever come to realize his own position in the arms of ,satan1 when1 under the direction of ,satan1 he gives no heed to the testimony of ,god4 ,still another passage should be noted in this connection4 ,in ,,ii ,cor4 #d3c1 #d1 ,satan is described as the god of this world1 blinding the minds of the unbelieving4 ,the whole passage is as follows3 ,and if our gospel is veiled1 it is veiled in them that perish3 in whom the god of this age hath blinded the thoughts of the unbelieving that the light of the gospel of the glory of ,christ1 who is the image of ,god should not dawn upon them 7,r4,v4 with margin74 ,in this passage the unconscious condition is said to be the direct result of the power of ,satan1 and the blindness of their thoughts1 it is stated1 is along one particular line4 ,to them the gospel is veiled2 and the gospel here referred to is not the whole life story of ,jesus1 nor is it the ,gospel of the ,kingdom2 but the message of good news or favor2 the exact terms of ,salvation by grace alone4 ,this ,paul here calls our gospel1 for to him it was first unfolded in its completeness4 ,the unregenerate are1 then1 unconscious of their position in the arms of ,satan1 and blind in their thoughts toward the gospel of mercy and favor1--their only hope for time or eternity4 ,satan1 like a fond mother1 is bending over those in his arms1 breathing into their minds the quieting balm of a universal fatherhood of ,god and a universal brotherhood of man2 suggesting their worthiness before ,god on the ground of their own moral character and physical generation2 feeding their tendency to imitate the true faith by great humanitarian undertakings and schemes for the reformation of individuals and the betterment of the social order4 ,god's necessary requirements of regeneration are carefully set aside1 and the blinded souls go on without hope1 having the understanding darkened1 being alienated from the life of ,god through the ignorance that is in there1 because of the blindness of their heart 7,eph4 #e3ah74 ,how important1 as a preparation for salvation1 is the illuminating work of the ,spirit in conviction1 by which ,he lifts the veil and opens the mind to a new vision of the redemption and glory that is in ,christ6 ,without this ,god-given vision there can be no understanding of the way of life1 nor any intelligent decision for ,christ4 ,chapter ,,iv4 ,this ,age and the ,satanic ,system4 ,it may also be concluded from the study of the ages that ,god has not been pleased to meet the presumptuous claims of ,satan or of man by a simple denial of those claims2 ,he has chosen1 rather1 to bring everything to an experimental test4 ,one advantage of this method is obvious3 every mouth will be stopped1 and the entire universe of beings will see clearly the utter folly of that which might have been arbitrarily denied4 ,man can no longer claim that his conscience is sufficient to guide him to his highest destiny2 since the whole race1 when standing on that basis before ,god1 so utterly failed that their destruction1 by a flood1 was necessary3 in like manner1 by the history of a most favored people in the age preceding the first advent of ,christ1 man has demonstrated his own inability to do right or to keep the law4 ,in the present age1 man proves his separation from his ,creator by his spirit of self-sufficiency and positive rejection of ,god4 ,the present issue between ,god and man is one of whether man will accept ,god's estimate of him1 abandon his hopeless self-struggle1 and cast himself only on ,god who alone is sufficient to accomplish his needed transformation4 ,all ,divine love1 wisdom1 and power have wrought to make these conditions open to man2 and when this last and supreme effort of ,god has been rejected1 the final pleading with man must be forever past1 and the long delayed judgment upon sin be executed in righteousness4 ,it has already been pointed out that ,satan purposed in his heart to attempt all the functions of ,god2 and1 according to ,scripture1 that which he purposed is being permitted1 to the extent of his ability1 throughout the course of this age4 ,though his failure and defeat have been predicted from the beginning1 yet it has pleased ,god to permit the ,satanic ambition to come to its own destruction1 and to demonstrate its own weakness and wicked folly4 ,no other solution is given of the present power of ,satan and the terrible manifestations of his increasing authority yet to be experienced in the closing scenes of this age4 ,his present authority is by no means complete4 ,in ,,ii ,thes4 #b3g it is stated3 ,the mystery of lawlessness doth already work3 only there is one that restraineth now1 until he be taken out of the way4 ,this is a description of the work of the ,holy ,spirit as ,he restrains and hinders the development of the power of evil4 ,nor can ,satan direct the affairs of that part of humanity who have been delivered from the power of darkness and are now united to ,christ 7unless they yield to his wishes72 though they are in the world and their earth lives are mingled in much of its history4 ,these saved ones are the antiseptic salt1 hindering1 like the ,spirit who indwells them1 the untimely dissolution of humanity4 ,again1 ,satan's dominion is limited in that there is no power but of ,god3 and the powers that be are ordained of ,god 7,rom4 #ac3a74 ,in this ,scripture it is revealed that ,satan1 though in authority1 is not wholly free from his ,creator1 and that any direction of the governments of the world which he exercises is by permission from ,god4 ,therefore1 the efforts of ,satan and man are not supreme1 but must come to their predicted end when the eternal purpose of ,god has had its realization in the gathering out from the ,gentiles of the heavenly people for ,his own name4 ,a few tremble in the face of the social and industrial problems of the day2 while the vast majority are confident that the sagacity of man is not only controlling iniquity1 but is gradually developing an improved social order4 ,thus1 man1 in his vanity1 assigns to himself that which is of ,god alone1 for all the elements of corruption and tribulation are latent in the world to-day1 and the mighty effort of ,god is required to stay its bursting into flame until the appointed time4 ,tribulation will1 therefore1 instantly begin when the hand of ,god is removed from the unregenerate and ,satan-ruled humanity4 ,though under the restraining hand of ,god1 ,satan1 according to ,scripture1 is now in authority over the unregenerate world1 and the unsaved are unconsciously organized and federated under his leading4 ,the fact that there is such a federation1 although stated in ,scripture1 is obscured in translation4 ,in at least thirty important passages the ,english word world is again used without qualification4 ,in these passages reference is made to a great evil system or order over which ,satan is in authority1 the word world referring to the world of men1 their evil undertakings1 ideals and federation4 ,this federation includes all of the unsaved and fallen humanity2 it has the co-operation of the fallen spirits1 and is but the union of all who are living and acting in independence of ,god4 ,this ,satanic system has its own ideals and principles which are in sharp contrast to the ideals and principles given the redeemed3 yet these two classes must mingle together as closely as the ties of human life can come4 ,the whole truth concerning this federation is contained in those passages wherein the ,satanic system is mentioned4 ,first1 ,satan is its governing head4 ,three times ,jesus referred to ,satan as the prince of the ,satanic system3 ,now is the judgment of this world3 ,now shall the prince of this world 7,satanic system7 be cast out 7,jno4 #ab3ca74 ,hereafter ,i will not talk much with you3 for the prince of this world 7,satanic system7 cometh1 and hath nothing in me 7,jno4 #ad3cj74 ,of judgment1 because the prince of this world 7,satanic system7 is judged 7,jno4 #af3aa74 ,paul also refers to ,satan as the prince of the power of the air 7,eph4 #b3b71 and again as the god of this age 7,,ii ,cor4 #d3d74 ,in the latter passage1 mention is made of the age or period of time only1 as in ,eph4 #f3ab3 ,for our wrestling is not against flesh and blood1 but against the principalities1 against the powers1 against the age rulers of this darkness1 against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenlies 7,r4,v474 ,from these ,scriptures it must be conceded that the offer1 which ,satan made to ,christ1 of the then inhabited earth1 was very real4 ,the ,scripture is as follows3 ,and the devil1 taking ,him up into an high mountain1 showed ,him the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time4 ,and the devil said unto ,him1 ,all this power will ,i give thee1 and the glory of them3 for that is delivered unto me2 and to whomsoever ,i will ,i give it4 ,if ,thou therefore wilt worship me1 all shall be ,thine 7,lu4 #d3e-g74 ,it has sometimes been held that the claim of possession of the earth was a lie1 this being asserted on the ground that ,satan is exposed in ,scripture as a liar4 ,such a conclusion is impossible for at least two reasons4 ,it would have been no temptation had he not possessed the kingdoms he offered2 and any such false claim would have been immediately branded as a lie by the ,son of ,god4 ,he is still further revealed as the recognized head of this world system in two additional passages3 ,because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world 7,satanic system7 7,i ,jno4 #d3d74 ,and we know that we are of ,god1 and the whole world 7,satanic system7 lieth in the wicked one 7,i ,jno4 #e3ai74 ,returning to ,isaiah #ad3ab-ai1 wherein ,satan is described as ,lucifer1 the son of the morning1 and where the prophet in vision sees the whole career of ,satan in retrospect1 it will be seen that ,satan holds a mighty grip upon the world4 ,here it is said of him that he was the one who didst weaken the nations and who made the earth to tremble1 that did shake kingdoms1 that made the world as a wilderness and destroyed the cities thereof2 that opened not the house of his prisoners4 ,every phrase in this remarkable passage is a revelation4 ,undoubtedly there is reference here both to the fall of man and to the authority of ,satan in the earth1 as well as to his attitude of resistance toward salvation which is by the grace of ,god1 since it is said of ,satan that he made the world as a wilderness2 he opened not the house of his1 prisoners4 ,second1 the ,satanic system1 according to ,scripture1 is wholly evil4 ,this is a hard saying2 and is usually denied by those who do not realize that all ,scripture estimates are made from the standard of the holiness of ,god2 and that the ,satanic system1 of itself and apart from the influence of ,god and ,his people1 has never improved their own moral condition1 but that they are individually under condemnation before ,god 7,jno4 #c3ah72 their borrowed interest in morality and charity being a poor commendation1 in view of their fallen and ,christ-rejecting attitude before ,god4 ,they are also incapable of comprehending the standards of ,god1 whose thoughts and ways are above their thoughts and ways as the heavens are higher than the earth 7,isa4 #ee3h1i74 ,the quality and incapacity of the fallen race is accurately described in ,rom4 #c3aj-ah2 this description of them being as they appear before the holiness of ,god1 stripped of all externals3 ,as it is written1 ,there is none righteous1 no1 not one3 there is none that understandeth1 there is none that seeketh after ,god4 ,they are all gone out of the way1 they are together become unprofitable2 there is none that doeth good1 no1 not one4 ,their throat is an open sepulchre2 with their tongues they have used deceit2 the poison of asps is under their lips3 whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness3 their feet are swift to shed blood3 destruction and misery are in their ways3 and the way of peace have they not known3 there is no fear of ,god before their eyes4 ,so1 fallen humanity1 federated under ,satan1 will appear and act when the restraining hand of ,god is removed4 ,though the unsaved are moral1 educated1 refined1 or religious1 they are not righteous in ,god's sight2 for the charge here brought against them is that there is none righteous1 no1 not one2 and all have sinned and come short of the glory of ,god4 ,the following ,scriptures which directly refer to the character of the ,satanic system are1 therefore1 the estimate of ,god upon those conditions which the world holds to be ideal3 ,whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises3 that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature1 having escaped the corruption that is in the world 7,satanic system7 7,,ii ,pet4 ,i3#d74 ,for if after they have escaped the pollution of the world 7,satanic system7 through the knowledge of the ,lord and ,saviour ,jesus ,christ1 they are again entangled therein1 and overcome1 the latter end is worse with them than the beginning 7,,ii ,pet4 #b3bj74 ,pure religion and undefiled before ,god and the ,father is this1 ,to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction1 and to keep himself unspotted from the world 7,satanic system7 7,jas4 #a3bg74 ,ye adulterers and adulteresses1 know ye not that the friendship of the world 7,satanic system7 is enmity with ,god8 ,whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world 7,satanic system7 is the enemy of ,god 7,jas4 #d3d74 ,for whosoever is born of ,god overcometh the world 7,satanic system7 7,i ,jno4 #e3d74 ,hereafter ,i will not talk much with you3 for the prince of this world 7,satanic system7 cometh1 and hath nothing in me 7,jno4 #ad3cj74 ,and every spirit that confesseth not that ,jesus ,christ is come in the flesh is not of ,god3 and this is that spirit of antichrist1 whereof ye have heard that it should come2 and even now already is it in the world 7,satanic system7 7,i ,jno4 #d3c74 ,in like manner the believer is said to have been delivered from the present evil age 7,gal4 #aad7 and delivered from the power of darkness 7,col4 #a3ac7 and is not to be conformed to this age 7,rom4 #ab3b74 ,these judgments are made from the view-point of the purity and holiness of ,god4 ,in ,his sight the highest moral1 educational1 and religious ideals that the unregenerate world can comprehend are but a part of the confusion and darkness of this age when coupled with a rejection of ,his testimony in regard to ,his ,son as their atoning ,saviour4 ,thus1 it is presented from the ,scripture that the present age and its great federation is1 in ,god's sight1 most unholy4 ,third1 ,satan is also set forth as having direct control of the physical well-being of his subjects1 and at the same time as being able1 by special permission1 to gain access to the people of ,god3 ,for as much then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood1 ,he 7,christ7 also ,himself likewise took part of the same2 that through death ,he might destroy him that had the power of death1 that is1 the devil 7,heb4 #b3 #ad74 ,how ,god anointed ,jesus of ,nazareth with the ,holy ,ghost and with power3 who went about doing good1 and healing all them that were oppressed of the devil2 for ,god was with him 7,acts #aj3ch74 ,and ought not this woman1 being a daughter of ,abraham1 whom ,satan hath bound1 lo1 these eighteen years1 be loosed from this bond on the ,sabbath day8 7,lu4 #ac3 #af74 ,and ,satan answered the ,lord1 and said1 ,doth ,job fear ,god for naught8 ,hast not thou made an hedge about him1 and about his house1 and about all that he hath on every side8 ,thou hast blessed the work of his hands1 and his substance is increased in the land4 ,but put forth thine hand now1 and touch all that he hath1 and he will curse thee to thy face4 ,and the ,lord said unto ,satan1 ,behold1 all that he hath is in thy power2 only upon himself put not forth thine hand 7,job4 #a3i-ab74 ,simon1 ,simon1 behold1 ,satan asked to have you1 that he might sift you as wheat3 but ,i have made supplication for thee1 that thy faith fail not2 and do thou1 when once thou hast turned again1 establish thy brethren 7,lu4 #bb3ca1 #cb ,r4,v474 ,and lest ,i should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations1 there was given to me a thorn in the flesh1 the messenger of ,satan to buffet me1 lest ,i should be exalted above measure 7,,ii ,cor4 #ab3g74 ,by these passages1 the emphasis of ,scripture on the power and authority of ,satan in this age may be seen4 ,and though the exact limits of his power under the restraining hand of ,god are not revealed1 it would be unreasonable to deny that he is the god of this age1 the head of the great world system2 and1 though all unknown to them1 the director of the affairs of unregenerate men4 ,fourth1 ,the works of the ,satanic order are clearly outlined in several descriptive passages which also present that which is highest in ideal1 and deepest in motive in the ,satan energized mass of humanity4 ,one passage1 alone1 contains the entire revelation3 ,for all that is in the world 7,satanic system71 the lust of the flesh1 and the lust of the eyes1 and the pride of life1 is not of the ,father1 but is of the world 7,satanic system7 7,i ,jno4 #b3af74 ,the satisfaction of these same cravings was the temptation placed before ,eve in the ,garden3 ,and when the woman saw that the tree was good for food1 and that it was pleasant to the eyes1 and a tree to be desired to make one wise1 she took of the fruit thereof1 and did give also unto her husband with her2 and he did eat 7,gen4 #c3f74 ,the real nature of these cravings is easily recognized as wholly self-centered and without thought of ,god or of any true character4 ,all wars and fightings among men are only a natural result of the evil qualities of this great federation4 ,jesus said to ,pilate3 ,my kingdom is not of this world 7,satanic system73 if my kingdom were of this world 7,satanic system71 then would my servants fight1 that ,i should not be delivered unto the ,jews3 but now is my kingdom not from hence 7,jno4 #ah3cf74 ,it is a noticeable fact that the governments of the world depend upon physical power and a display of armament to maintain their position and authority1 and the superior law of love does not seem to be adapted to1 or understood by1 the elements that make up the ,satanic order4 ,fifth1 ,all earthly property is of the ,satanic order1 which property the believer may use1 but must not abuse3 ,but whoso hath this world's good 7,satanic system71 and seeth his brother have need1 and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him1 how dwelleth the love of ,god in him8 7,i ,jno4 #c3ag74 ,and the cares of this age1 and the deceitfulness of riches1 and the lust of other things entering in1 choke the word1 and it becometh unfruitful 7,mark #d3ai74 ,but this ,i say1 brethren1 the time is short3 it remaineth1 that both they that have wives be as though they had none2 and they that weep1 as though they wept not2 and they that rejoice1 as though they rejoiced not2 and those that buy1 as though they possessed not2 and they that use this world 7,satanic system71 as not abusing it 7,i ,cor4 #g3bi-ca74 ,sixth1 ,the same world that crucified the ,christ will also hate the saved one in whom ,he dwells3 ,marvel not1 my brethren1 if the world 7,satanic system7 hate you 7,i ,jno4 #c3ac74 ,seventh1 ,the impotency and limitations of the world order are most evident4 ,its leader1 though mighty1 is inferior to ,christ3 ,ye are of ,god1 little children1 and have overcome them3 because greater is he that is in you1 than he that is in the world 7,satanic system7 7,i ,jno4 #d3d74 ,its knowledge and understanding are limited3 ,behold what manner of love the ,father hath bestowed upon us1 that we should be called children of ,god2 and such we are4 ,for this cause the world 7,satanic system7 knoweth us not1 because it knew him not 7,i ,jno4 #c3a ,r4,v474 ,now the natural man receiveth not the things of the ,spirit of ,god3 for they are foolishness unto him2 and he cannot know them1 because they are spiritually judged4 ,but he that is spiritual judgeth all things1 and ,he ,himself is judged of no man 7,i ,cor4 #b3ad1 #ae1 ,r4,v474 ,there is none that understandeth1 there is none that seeketh after ,god 7,rom4 #c3aa74 ,and even if our gospel is veiled1 it is veiled in them that perish3 in whom the god of this age hath blinded the minds of the unbelieving1 that the light of the gospel of the glory of ,christ1 who is the image of ,god1 should not dawn upon them 7,,ii ,cor4 #d3c1 #d1 ,r4,v474 ,they are of this world 7,satanic system73 therefore speak they as of the world1 and the world 7,satanic system7 heareth them 7,i ,jno4 #d3e1 ,r4,v474 ,all the sorrow of this order is without hope3 ,for godly sorrow worketh repentance unto salvation1 a repentance which bringeth no regret3 ,but the sorrow of the world 7,satanic system7 worketh death 7,,ii ,cor4 #g3aj1 ,r4,v474 ,and1 finally1 the whole order is temporal and passing3 ,but the day of the ,lord will come as a thief in the night2 in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise1 and the elements shall melt with fervent heat1 and the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up 7,,ii ,pet4 #c3aj74 ,and the world 7,satanic system7 passeth away and the lust thereof3 but he that doeth the will of ,god abideth forever 7,i ,jno4 #b3ag74 ,chapter ,v4 ,the ,satanic ,host4 ,christ inferred1 in one of ,his controversies with the ,pharisees 7,matt4 #ab3bb-cj71 that ,satan is a ,king2 and as such is in authority over a kingdom4 ,this particular discussion was in regard to the fact that ,christ had healed one possessed with a demon1 blind and dumb4 ,the ,pharisees claimed that the demon had been cast out by ,beelzebub the prince of demons1 or the one whom ,jesus1 later in the narrative1 calls ,satan4 ,the passage is as follows3 ,then was brought unto ,him one possessed with a devil1 blind1 and dumb2 and ,he healed him1 insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw4 ,and all the people were amazed1 and said1 ,is not this the son of ,david8 ,but when the ,pharisees heard it1 they said1 ,this fellow doth not cast out devils1 but by ,beelzebub the prince of the devils4 ,and ,jesus knew their thoughts1 and said unto them1 ,every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation2 and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand3 and if ,satan cast out ,satan1 he is divided against himself2 how shall then his kingdom stand8 ,and if ,i by ,beelzebub cast out devils1 by whom do your children cast them out8 therefore they shall be your judges4 ,but if ,i cast out devils by the ,spirit of ,god1 then the kingdom of ,god has come unto you4 ,or else how can one enter into a strong man's house1 and spoil his goods1 except he first bind the strong man8 and then he will spoil his house4 ,he that is not with me is against me2 and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad4 ,by this ,scripture it may be seen that the kingdom of ,satan is a host of bodiless spirits4 ,although their origin cannot be definitely traced1 it is probable that they were created as subjects of ,satan in the primal glory1 as he1 also1 was created as their prince and king4 ,satan1 being in authority over these beings1 doubtless drew them after him in his sinful attempt to thrust himself into the place of ,god4 ,it would seem that ,satan is in authority over two distinct orders of beings--the ,satanic order of the earth1 and the ,satanic host of the air4 ,it is clear that he secured the scepter of government in the earth from ,adam1 by right of conquest3 while his authority over the ,satanic host is1 undoubtedly1 that which he has been permitted to retain from his creation4 ,if ,satan has thus kept his authority over these spirits from the beginning1 it follows that they are in full sympathy with him and render him willing service4 ,the following ,scriptures emphasize the authority of ,satan over these beings3 ,and if ,satan cast out ,satan1 how then shall his kingdom stand8 7,matt4 #ab3bf74 ,then shall he say also unto them on the left hand1 ,depart from me1 ye cursed1 into everlasting fire1 prepared for the devil and his angels 7,matt4 #be3da74 ,the reality and personality of this host of evil spirits is taught in ,scripture2 and a careful study of the numerous passages in which they are mentioned will reveal how ,god has provided complete instruction in ,his ,word concerning this theme on which so much of the believer's welfare depends4 ,these spirits are usually referred to in both the ,authorized and ,revised ,versions of the ,new ,testament as devils1 but the word might better have been translated demons4 ,in considering the service these beings render to ,satan1 it is important to distinguish between demon possession or control1 and demon influence4 ,in the one case the body is entered and a dominating control is gained3 while in the other case a warfare from without is carried on by suggestion1 temptation1 and influence4 ,investigation of the ,scriptures in regard to demon possession reveals3 ,first3 ,that this host is made up of bodiless spirits only4 ,the following ,scripture verifies this statement3 ,when the unclean spirit is gone out of a man1 he walketh through dry places1 seeking rest1 and findeth none4 ,then he saith1 ,i will return into my house from whence ,i came out2 and when he is come1 he findeth it empty1 swept1 and garnished4 ,then goeth he1 and tak'eth with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself1 and they enter in and dwell there3 and the last state of that man is worse than the first 7,matt4 #ab3dc-de74 ,and all the devils besought him1 saying1 ,send us into the swine1 that we may enter into them 7,mark #e3ab74 ,second3 ,they are1 however1 not only seeking to enter the bodies of either mortals or beasts 7for their power seems to be in some measure dependent upon such embodiment72 but they are constantly seen to be thus embodied1 according to the ,new ,testament4 ,a few of these passages are given here3 ,when the even was come1 they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils3 and he cast out the spirits with his word1 and healed all that were sick 7,matt4 #h3af74 ,as they went out1 behold1 they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil4 ,and when the devil was cast out1 the dumb spake 7,matt4 #i3cb1 #cc74 ,and the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which ,philip spake1 hearing and seeing the miracles which he did4 ,for unclean spirits1 crying with loud voice1 came out of many that were possessed with them3 and many taken with palsies1 and that were lame1 were healed 7,acts #h3f1g74 ,and it came to pass1 as we went to prayer1 a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us1 which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying 7,acts #af3af74 ,and they came over unto the other side of the sea1 into the country of the ,gadarenes4 ,and when he was come out of the ship1 immediately there met him out of the tombs1 a man with an unclean spirit1 who had his dwelling among the tombs2 and no man could bind him1 no1 not with chains3 because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains1 and the chains had been plucked asunder by him1 and the fetters broken in pieces3 neither could any man tame him4 ,and always1 night and day1 he was in the mountains1 and in the tombs1 crying1 and cutting himself with stones4 ,but when he saw ,jesus afar off1 he ran and worshipped him1 and cried with a loud voice1 and said1 ,what have ,i to do with thee1 ,jesus1 thou ,son of the most high ,god8 ,i adjure thee by ,god1 that thou torment me not4 ,for he said unto him1 ,come out of the man1 thou unclean spirit4 ,and he asked him1 ,what is thy name8 ,and he answered1 saying1 ,my name is ,legion3 for we are many4 ,and he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country4 ,now there was nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding4 ,and all the devils besought him1 saying1 send us into the swine1 that we may enter into them4 ,and forthwith ,jesus gave them leave4 ,and the unclean spirits went out1 and entered into the swine3 and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea1 7they were about two thousand27 and were choked in the sea 7,mark #e3a-ac74 ,third3 ,they are wicked1 unclean1 and vicious4 ,many passages might be quoted in proof of this statement3 ,and when he was come to the other side of the country of the ,gergesenes1 there met him two possessed with devils1 coming out of the tombs1 exceeding fierce1 so that no man might pass by that way 7,matt4 #h3bh74 ,and when he had called unto him his twelve disciples1 he gave them power against unclean spirits1 to cast them out1 and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease 7,matt4 #aj3a74 ,there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit1 who had his dwelling among the tombs2 and no man could bind him1 no1 not with chains3 because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains1 and the chains had been plucked asunder by him1 and the fetters broken in pieces3 neither could any man tame him4 ,and always1 night and day1 he was in the mountains1 and in the tombs1 crying1 and cutting himself with stones 7,mark #e3b-e74 ,and they brought him unto him3 and when he saw him1 straightway the spirit tare him2 and he fell on the ground1 and wallowed foaming 7,mark #i3bj74 ,it might be added that there seem to be degrees of wickedness represented by these spirits3 for it is stated in ,matt4 #ab3dc-de that the demon1 returning to his house1 taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself4 ,the question is often raised whether demon possession obtains at the present time4 ,although the authentic records of such control are almost wholly limited to the three years of the public ministry of ,jesus1 it is incredible that demon possession did not exist before that time1 or has not existed since4 ,in this connection it should be remembered that these beings are not only intelligent themselves1 but that they are directly governed and ordered by ,satan1 whose wisdom and cunning are so clearly set forth in the ,scriptures4 ,it is reasonable to conclude that they1 like their monarch1 are adapting the manner of their activity to the enlightenment of the age and locality4 ,it is evident that they are not now less inclined than before to enter and dominate a body4 ,demon possession in the present time is probably often unsuspected because of the unrecognized fact that demons are capable of inspiring a moral and exemplary life1 as well as of appearing as the dominating spirit of a spiritist medium1 or through the grosser manifestations that are recorded by missionaries from heathen lands4 ,these demons1 too1 like their king1 will appear as angels of light as well as roaring lions1 when by the former impersonation they can more perfectly further the stupendous undertakings of ,satan in his warfare against the work of ,god4 ,demon influence1 like the activity of ,satan1 is prompted by two motives3 both to hinder the purpose of ,god for humanity1 and to extend the authority of ,satan4 ,they1 therefore1 at the command of their king1 willingly co-operate in all his ,god-dishonoring undertakings4 ,their influence is exercised both to mislead the unsaved and to wage an unceasing warfare against the believer 7,eph4 #f3ab74 ,their motive is suggested in what is revealed by their knowledge of the authority and deity of ,christ1 as well as by what they know of their eternal doom4 ,the following passages are important in this connection3 ,and behold1 they cried out1 saying1 ,what have we to do with thee1 ,jesus1 thou ,son of ,god8 art thou come hither to torment us before the time8 7,matt4 #h3bi74 ,and there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit2 and he cried out1 saying1 ,let us alone2 what have we to do with thee1 thou ,jesus of ,nazareth8 ,art thou come to destroy us8 ,i know thee who thou art1 the ,holy ,one of ,god4 ,and ,jesus rebuked him1 saying1 ,hold thy peace1 and come out of him 7,mark #a3bc-be74 ,and the evil spirit answered and said1 ,jesus ,i know1 and ,paul ,i know2 but who are ye8 7,acts #ai3ae74 ,thou believest that there is one ,god2 thou doest well3 the devils also believe1 and tremble 7,jas4 #b3ai74 ,of the methods of demons in the latter days of the age1 the ,scriptures bear special testimony4 ,they will cover their lies with the empty form of religion1 and by every means make them to appear as the truth1 that they may draw both the saved and the unsaved from their hope in ,christ3 ,now the ,spirit speaketh expressly1 that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith1 giving heed to seducing spirits1 and doctrines of devils2 speaking lies in hypocrisy2 having their conscience seared with a hot iron 7,i ,tim4 #d3 #a1 #b74 ,a departure from the true faith is thus predicted to be the evidence of the influence of demons in the last days4 ,this is none other than the great apostasy that must precede the ,day of the ,lord according to ,,ii ,thes4 #b3b1 #c4 ,the believer's security in this unceasing warfare is treated at length in another chapter4 ,it may be noted here1 however1 that the ,god-appointed means for this victory are prayer and bodily control1 ,howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting 7,matt4 #ag3ba72 and in the appropriation of the ,person of ,christ as the believer's sufficiency1 as ,he is set forth in ,his saving power by the various parts of the whole armour of ,eph4 #f3ac-ah4 ,satan1 though proposing to supersede the ,almighty1 is not ,omnipotent3 but his power1 and the extent of his activity are immeasurably increased by the co-operation of his host of demons4 ,satan is not ,omniscient3 yet his knowledge is greatly extended by the combined wisdom and observation of his sympathetic subjects4 ,satan is not ,omnipresent3 but he is able to keep up an unceasing activity in every locality by the loyal obedience of the ,satanic host1 who are so numerous as to be called ,legion4 ,chapter ,,vi4 ,satan's ,motive4 ,according to ,scripture1 the supreme motive of ,satan is his purpose to become like the ,most ,high and1 though that purpose was formed even before the age of man1 it has been his constant actuating motive from that time until now4 ,it is also the teaching of ,scripture that this present period of time is that in which ,satan is in especial authority2 he being permitted the exercise of his own power in order that he1 and all his followers1 may make their own final demonstration to the whole universe of the utter folly of their claims and of their abject helplessness when wholly independent of their ,creator4 ,this is definitely predicted in ,,ii ,tim4 #c3i as the final outcome of the atttitude of the world in its independence toward ,god3 ,they shall proceed no further3 for their folly shall be manifest to all men4 ,it has also been stated that the unsurpassed tribulation only awaits the withdrawal of the restraining hand of ,god1 for all the required elements for such a condition are latent in the unregenerate heart 7,rom4 #c3i-ah74 ,in this terrible period of tribulation the greatest power of ,satan will be exercised1 and the wickedness of man will be revealed in his attempt to live in whole separation from ,god4 ,even fallen humanity would not1 at first1 acknowledge ,satan as its object of worship and federal head2 and such a condition of society wherein ,satan will be received as supreme 7as he will be in the person of the first ,beast of ,rev4 #ac71 must1 therefore1 be developed by generations of increasing irreverence and lawlessness toward ,god4 ,thus it has been necessary for ,satan to conceal his person and projects from the very people over whom he is in authority and in whom he is the energizing power4 ,for this reason this class of humanity believes least in his reality1 and ignorantly rejects its real leader as a mystical person4 ,when he is worshipped it is through some idol as a medium1 or through his own impersonation of ,jehovah2 and when he rules it is by what seems to be the voice of a ,king or the voice of the people4 ,however1 the appalling irreverence of the world to-day is the sure preparation of the forthcoming direct manifestation of ,satan1 as predicted in ,dan4 #aa1 ,,ii ,thes4 #b and ,rev4 #ac4 ,satan's policy of deception is described as extending to all the nations1 and to the whole world3 ,even him1 whose coming is after the working of ,satan with all power and signs and lying wonders1 and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish2 because they receive not the love of the truth1 that they might be saved 7,,ii ,thes4 #b3i1 #aj74 ,and the great dragon was cast out1 that old serpent1 which is the ,devil1 and ,satan1 which deceiveth the whole world 7,rev4 #ab3i74 ,and he laid hold on the dragon1 that old serpent1 which is the ,devil1 and ,satan1 and bound him a thousand years1 and cast him into the bottomless pit1 and shut him up1 and set a seal upon him1 that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years should be fulfilled3 and after that he must be loosed a little season 7,rev4 #bj3b1 #c74 ,and when the thousand years are expired1 ,satan shall be loosed out of his prison1 and shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth 7,rev4 #bj3 #g1 #h74 ,he who was the measure of perfection1 full of beauty and wisdom2 he who made the earth to tremble2 who shook kingdoms2 has been willing to be ridiculed by the world as a being without reality1 that he might1 in the end1 realize his own deepest desire4 ,again1 his own subjects have strangely neglected the plain teachings of ,scripture on his real power and authority4 ,to them he has been an imaginary fiend1 delighting only in the torment of unfortunate souls2 making his home in hell1 and himself the impersonation of all that is cruel and vile3 when1 on the contrary1 he is real1 and is the very embodiment of the highest ideals the unregenerate world has received2 for he is the inspirer of all those ideals4 ,with his own he is not at enmity1 and he1 like the most refined of the world1 is in no sympathy with the grosser forms of their sin4 ,he would hinder those manifestations of evil if he could4 ,and certainly he does not prompt them2 for they are the natural fruit of an unrestrained fallen nature1 according to ,james #a3ad1 #ae3 ,but every man is tempted1 when he is drawn away of his own lust1 and enticed4 ,then when lust hath conceived1 it bringeth forth sin3 and sin1 when it is finished1 bringeth forth death4 ,for from within1 out of the heart of men1 proceed evil thoughts1 adulteries1 fornications1 murders1 thefts1 covetousness1 wickedness1 deceit1 lasciviousness1 an evil eye1 blasphemy1 pride1 foolishness3 all these evil things come from within1 and defile the man 7,mk4 #g3ba-bc74 ,the dying drunkard1 the fallen woman1 and the suffering of the innocent are the evidences of ,satan's failure rather than the realization of his purpose4 ,his own terrible sin before ,god would not be condemned in the eyes of the world1 for it is that which they most idealize and praise4 ,in his sin he aspired to that which is highest1 and proposed to realize his ideal by his own self-sufficiency and strength4 ,true1 he has lowered his ,creator1 in his own mind1 to a level where he supposes himself to be in legitimate competition with ,him1 both for authority over other beings and for their worship4 ,yet this unholy ambition and disregard for the ,creator is a most commendable thing according to the standards of the ,satanic order4 ,in the language of the world1 ,satan is simply self made and every element of his attitude toward his ,creator is1 as a principle of life1 both commended and practiced by the world4 ,though hiding himself1 ,satan has had the satisfaction1 under limitations1 of governing the affairs of men2 and the delight1 to a large extent1 of receiving their worship4 ,the greatest care was taken in the law governing ,god's ancient people that they should not offer their sacrifices unto devils1 which was the practice of surrounding nations 7,lev4 #ag3g2 ,deut4 #cb3ag74 ,in violation of these special laws1 ,rehoboam instituted special priests for the devils 7,,ii ,chron4 #aa3ae71 while the worship of devils1 according to the ,new ,testament1 is to continue throughout the age3 ,but this ,i say1 that the things which the ,gentiles sacrifice1 they sacrifice to devils1 and not to ,god3 and ,i would not that ye should have fellowship with devils4 ,ye cannot drink the cup of the ,lord1 and the cup of devils3 ye cannot be partakers of the ,lord's table and the table of devils 7,i ,cor4 #aj3bj1 #ba74 ,and the rest of the men that were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands1 that they should not worship devils1 and idols of gold1 and silver1 and brass1 and stone1 and of wood3 which neither can see1 nor hear1 nor walk 7,rev4 #i3bj74 ,again3 ,satan's ambition is leading him to make this age of his special opportunity as near perfect as his wisdom and power will permit4 ,and in this connection it may be noted that ,satan's ambition was not to become a fiend1 but rather to become like the ,most ,high4 ,he will1 therefore1 strive for all that is moral and good3 yet at the same time do all in his power to draw men from their natural reverence of ,god1 that1 in due time1 they may acknowledge himself without fear4 ,the ,satanic ideal of this age is1 then1 an improved social order1 a moral and cultured people1 who are devout worshippers of himself1 though for the present they may imagine they are worshipping ,jehovah through their empty religious forms and ceremonies1 while they are really in a state of ,god-dishonoring unbelief1 and all their thoughts are energized by ,satan alone4 ,the ,satanic message for this age will be reformation and self-development1 while the message of ,god is regeneration by the power of the ,spirit4 ,satan1 in his imitation of the ,most ,high1 is also working toward a universal kingdom of morality and peace upon earth1 which will be temporarily realized under the reign of the ,beast 7,rev4 #ac74 ,the difference between ,satan's ideal and the purpose of ,god1 apart from the utter folly of the one and the glorious certainty of the other1 is of both method and time4 ,according to the ,satanic program1 the present order of society1 with himself on the throne1 is to be developed into an ideal brotherhood1 in which all men will practice that which is moral and good4 ,according to the program of ,god1 this is an evil age of darkness and pollution1 in which the folly of ,satan and man is to be proven1 and out of which ,he is to gather the heavenly people for ,his own name4 ,the kingdom of righteousness is then to follow1 being ushered in by ,christ-enthroning and ,satan-dethroning events4 ,there will then be a perfect humanity and social order for all shall know the ,lord from the least unto the greatest and righteousness and peace shall cover the earth as the waters cover the face of the deep4 ,the master passion of ,satan leads him1 not only to strive for the success of his own projects1 but also to wage an unceasing warfare against ,jehovah4 ,these two lines of activity are inseparable2 for he cannot establish and develop his own kingdom1 and1 at the same time1 permit his subjects to be translated out of his kingdom into another1 especially when they remain in the midst as a living power and testimony against him4 ,nor can he reasonably allow the accomplishment of any of the projects of ,god2 for it is predicted that at the completion of these his own doom will be at hand4 ,the present time is1 therefore1 to ,satan1 the struggle for his own existence1 as well as the realization of all that has been his ambition in the ages past4 ,the warfare is no mere passing amusement for him1 for he1 in desperation1 is facing a terrible and awful judgment if he cannot succeed in his purpose4 ,the spectacle now presented to all enlightened beings of the universe1 is that of a mighty celestial being1 the god of the earth1 who is by creation the full measure of perfection1 both in wisdom and beauty1 making his last and most desperate warfare1 both to realize his own ambition and to thwart every movement of the ,most ,high2 knowing that in failure there is no ground for mercy1 but only the terrible destruction that has been so long predicted4 ,he knew when he formed this ,god-dishonoring purpose that it must either wholly succeed or he himself fall into terrible judgment4 ,on the other side of the conflict there is perfect calmness and certainty as to the end1 for the judgment and sentence are past2 yet every true believer is implored to be instant in season and out of season in the present projects of grace1 that the sufferings and separations of earth may be cut short in righteousness4 ,well may believers study their own motives in service in view of these vastly differing programs2 and question whether there is in them a humble willingness to co-operate in the present purpose of ,god in preparing the ,bride for the returning ,king3 or whether they have carelessly fallen in with the ,satanic ideal1 which rejects the coming ,kingdom of ,christ by an unholy attempt to establish the present kingdom of ,satan4 ,the program of ,satan1 which the world calls optimistic rests on the ,satanic purpose of a reformed society3 the program of ,god1 which is called pessimistic in that it discredits this age1 rests upon the infinite wisdom1 love and power of ,god2 and is so certain and near that the believer is taught to watch1 wait1 and be ready for the first ,divine movement toward this glorious end4 ,chapter ,,vii4 ,satan's ,methods4 ,the two great activities of ,satan1 already mentioned1 are referred to in ,,ii ,thes4 #b3d in connection with the ,man of sin1 who will be ,satan's last and greatest manifestation4 ,this being is spoken of as he who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called ,god1 or that is worshipped4 ,these two activities are inseparable in that1 while ,satan is seeking to exalt himself above all that is called ,god or that is worshipped1 he can keep his subjects or prolong his own existence only by an unceasing warfare in which he opposes himself against ,god4 ,whether ,satan now believes that he may yet succeed in spite of the decree of the ,cross and the evident superior power of ,god1 is not revealed4 ,it is still further revealed that the enmity of ,satan is not only toward the person of ,god1 from whom he has everything to fear1 but also toward every true child of ,god4 ,too much emphasis cannot be placed on this fact4 ,satan has no controversy or warfare with his own unregenerate people1 but there is abundant ,scripture to prove that he makes unceasing effort to mar the life and service of believers4 ,the motive for this effort is all-sufficient3 they have partaken of the ,divine nature 7,,ii ,pet4 #a3d71 and afford1 therefore1 a possible opportunity for ,satan to thrust his fiery darts at the ,divine ,person4 ,thus the believer becomes a medium of connection between the ,divine ,person and the ,satanic ,order2 for ,god literally loves the unsaved through the believer 7,rom4 #e3e73 and on the other hand1 the prince of the ,satanic system1 as well as many of his subjects1 is seeking an opportunity for a thrust at the person of ,god4 ,several important passages on the latter point may here be noted3 ,these things have ,i spoken unto you1 that in me ye might have peace4 ,in the world ye shall have tribulation3 but be of good cheer2 ,i have overcome the world 7,jno4 #af3cc74 ,yea1 and all that will live godly in ,christ ,jesus shall suffer persecution 7,,ii ,tim4 #c3ab74 ,marvel not1 my brethren1 if the world hate you 7,i ,jno4 #c3ac74 ,casting all your care upon him2 for he careth for you4 ,be sober1 be vigilant2 because your adversary the devil1 as a roaring lion1 walketh about1 seeking whom he may devour3 whom resist steadfast in the faith1 knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world 7,i ,pet4 #e3g-i74 ,finally1 be strong in the ,lord1 and in the power of his might4 ,put on the whole armour of ,god1 that ye may be able to stand against the wiles 7literally1 artifices7 of the devil4 ,for our wrestling is not against flesh and blood1 but again the principalities1 against the powers1 against the world rulers of this darkness1 against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places 7,eph4 #f3aj-ab ,r4,v474 ,the teaching of these passages clearly indicates the ,satanic enmity toward the believer1 and the believer's utter helplessness apart from the ,divine sufficiency4 ,they also reveal a degree of enmity which would result in the believer's life being crushed out1 were it not for the evident answer to the prayer of ,jesus3 ,i pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world1 but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil one 7,jno4 #ag3ae74 ,certainly there is abundant reason for the believer to expect the fiercest opposition from the ,satanic host in all his life and service2 and faith alone insures his victory over the world4 ,the believer is also the object of the ,satanic attack because of the great fact that unto him is committed the great ministry of reconciliation2 that by his testimony both in life and word1 and by his prayers1 the facts of redemption may be given to the world2 and if ,satan can but cripple the believer's service1 he accomplishes much in resisting the present purpose of ,god4 ,no other explanation is adequate for the dark ages of ,church history1 the appalling failure of the ,church in world-wide evangelism1 or her present sectarian divisions and selfish indifference4 ,this blighting ,satanic opposition can be detected in every effort for the salvation of the lost4 ,it may be seen in the fact that no personal appeal is ever made to the vast majority even in this favored land2 or1 when an appeal is made1 it is easily distracted or diverted into the discussion of unimportant themes4 ,the faithful pastor or evangelist is most sorely assailed1 every device of ,satan being used to distort the one all-important message of ,grace into something that is not vital4 ,the evangelist's call for decisions is often cumbered with that which is misleading or is a positive misstatement of the terms of ,salvation2 thus the appeal is lost and the whole effort fails4 ,the action of ,satan may also be detected in that a humble messenger who is loyal to ,christ and ,his ,salvation by grace alone1 will be almost unheeded at the present time3 while the vast throng will be found supporting that which is religious only in its externals1 but which is1 in reality1 a gospel of morality and subtle denial of the redemption that is in ,christ4 ,again1 the opposing power of ,satan may be seen in the matter of ,christian giving4 ,millions are given without solicitation for education1 culture1 and humanity's physical comfort1 but real world-wide evangelization must ever drag on with its shameful limitations and debts4 ,this warfare of ,satan is even more noticeable in the believer's prayer life2 this being his place of greatest usefulness and power1 is subject to the greatest conflict4 ,in this connection it may be stated safely that there is comparatively no prevailing prayer to-day2 yet the way is open and the promises are sure4 ,then1 also1 if the believer cannot be beguiled into indifference or a denial of ,christ1 he is tempted to place an undue emphasis upon some minor truth1 and1 in partial blindness1 to sacrifice his whole influence for good through the apparent unbalance of his testimony4 ,satan's warfare against the purpose of ,god is still more evident in his direct hindering of the unsaved4 ,not only are they constantly blinded to the ,gospel1 but1 when the ,spirit would draw them1 their minds are often filled with strange fears and distorted visions4 ,their inability to cast themselves upon ,christ is a mystery to themselves1 and nothing but the direct illuminating power of the ,spirit in conviction can open their eyes and deliver them from their gross darkness4 ,satan has always adapted his methods to the times and conditions4 ,if attention has been gained1 a complete denial of the truth has been made2 or1 when some recognition of the truth is demanded1 it has been granted on the condition that that which is vital in redemption should be omitted4 ,this partial recognition of the truth is required by the world to-day1 for1 while the direct result of the believer's testimony to the ,satanic system has been toward the gathering out of the ,bride1 there has been an indirect influence of this testimony upon the world which has led them to see that all that is good in their own ideals has been already stated in the ,bible and exemplified in the life of ,jesus1 and that every principle of humanitarian sympathy or righteous government has been revealed in the ,scriptures of truth4 ,thus there has grown a more or less popular appreciation of the value of these moral precepts of ,scripture and of the example of ,christ4 ,this condition has prevailed to such a degree that any new system or doctrine which secures a hearing to-day must base its claim upon ,scripture1 and include1 to some extent1 the person and teachings of ,jesus4 ,the fact that the world has thus partly acknowledged the value of the ,scriptures is taken by many to be a glorious victory for ,god2 while1 on the contrary1 it cannot be proven that fallen humanity is any more inclined to accept ,god's terms of salvation than in the generations past4 ,it is evident that this partial concession of the world to the testimony of ,god has opened the way for counterfeit systems of truth1 which1 according to prophecy1 are the last and most to be dreaded methods in the ,satanic warfare4 ,in this connection it must be conceded that ,satan has really granted nothing from his own position1 even though he be forced to acknowledge every principle of truth save that upon which salvation depends4 ,rather is he advantaged by such a concession2 for the value and delusion of a counterfeit lies in its greatest likeness to the real4 ,by advocating much truth1 in the form of a counterfeit system of truth1 ,satan can satisfy all the external religious cravings of the world1 and yet accomplish his own end by withholding that on which man's only hope depends4 ,it is1 therefore1 no longer safe to blindly subscribe to that which promises general good1 simply because it is good1 and is garnished with the teachings of ,scripture2 for good has ceased to be all on one side and evil all on the other4 ,in fact1 that which is evil in purpose has gradually appropriated the good until but one issue distinguishes them4 ,part-truth-ism has come into terrible and final conflict with whole-truth-ism1 and woe to the soul that does not discern between them4 ,the first1 though externally religious1 is of ,satan1 and leaves its followers in the doom of everlasting banishment from the presence of ,god3 while the latter is of ,god1 and has promise for the life that now is and that which is to come4 ,it is also noticeable that the term infidel has1 within a generation1 disappeared from common usage1 and that manner of open denial of the truth has been almost wholly abandoned4 ,yet the real ,church has by no means lost her foes1 for they are now even more numerous1 subtle1 and terrible than ever before4 ,these present enemies1 however1 like the unclean birds in the mustard tree1 have taken shelter under her branches1 and1 like the leaven in the pure meal1 they are penetrating and appropriating her most sacred altars and institutions4 ,these vultures are fed by a multitude1 both in the ,church and out1 who1 in ,satanic blindness1 are committed to the furtherance of any project or the acceptance of any theory that promises good to the world or is apparently based upon ,scripture2 little realizing that they are often really supporting the enemy of ,god4 ,a counterfeit is ,satan's most natural method of resisting the purpose of ,god1 since by it he can realize to that extent his desire to be like the ,most ,high4 ,every material is now at hand1 as never before1 for the construction of those conditions that are predicted to appear only in the very end of the age4 ,in ,,ii ,tim4 #c3a-e one of these predictions may be found3 ,this know also1 that in the last days perilous times shall come4 ,for men shall be lovers of their own selves1 covetous1 boasters1 proud1 blasphemers1 disobedient to parents1 unthankful1 unholy1 without natural affection1 truce breakers1 false accusers1 incontinent1 fierce1 despisers of them that are good1 traitors1 heady1 high minded1 lovers of pleasure more than lovers of ,god2 having a form of godliness1 but denying the power thereof3 from such turn away4 ,every word of this prophecy is worthy of most careful study in the light of the present tendency of society4 ,the fifth verse is especially important in connection with the subject of counterfeits to the truth3 ,having a form of godliness1 but denying the power thereof3 from such turn away4 ,here it is stated that in these last days forms of godliness shall appear which1 however1 deny the power of ,god2 and from these leaders the believer is warned to turn away4 ,the important element in the true faith which is to be omitted in these forms is carefully defined elsewhere in ,scripture3 ,for ,i am not ashamed of the gospel of ,christ3 for it is the power of ,god unto salvation to every one that believeth2 to the ,jew first1 and also to the ,greek 7,rom4 ,i3#af74 ,but we preach ,christ crucified1 unto the ,jews a stumbling block1 and unto the ,greeks foolishness2 but unto them which are called1 both ,jews and ,greeks1 ,christ the power of ,god1 and the wisdom of ,god 7,i ,cor4 ,i3#bc1 #bd74 ,therefore1 that which is omitted so carefully from these forms is the salvation which is in ,christ4 ,this is most suggestive1 for there is none other name under heaven given among men1 whereby we must be saved1 and it is by salvation alone that any deliverance can be had from the power of darkness4 ,without this salvation ,satan can still claim all his own4 ,it is perhaps necessary to add that1 judging from all his writings1 this salvation1 of which ,paul confesses he was not ashamed1 was no less an undertaking than regeneration by the ,spirit2 and whatever other theories may be advanced1 this is the teaching of the ,spirit through the ,apostle ,paul4 ,it1 therefore1 follows that one feature of the last days will be a form of godliness which carefully denies the power of ,god in salvation4 ,again1 ,satan is in the latter times to be the promotor of a system of truth or doctrine3 ,now the ,spirit speaketh expressly1 that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith1 giving heed to seducing spirits1 and doctrines of devils2 speaking lies in hypocrisy2 having their conscience seared with a hot iron2 7,i ,tim4 #d3a1 #b74 ,these predicted ,satanic systems are here carefully described4 ,their offers will be so attractive and externally so religious that into them will be drawn some who shall depart from the faith2 they being enticed by seducing spirits4 ,these attractive systems are not only from ,satan1 but are themselves lies in hypocrisy1 being presented by those whose conscience has been seared with a hot iron4 ,no more illuminating terms could be used than these4 ,a lie covered by hypocrisy means1 evidently1 that they are still attempting to be counted among the faithful2 and the conscience seared would indicate that they can distort the testimony of ,god and carelessly point other souls to the bottomless pit1 without present remorse or regret4 ,the doctrine of devils is again referred to in ,rev4 #b3bd as the deep things of ,satan and this is ,satan's counterfeit of the deep things of ,god which the ,spirit reveals to them that love ,him 7,i ,cor4 #b3aj74 ,thus there is predicted for the last days of this age1 both a form of godliness which denies the power of salvation that is in ,christ2 and a system known as the deep things of ,satan or doctrines of devils1 which calls some adherents from the true faith and speaks lies in hypocrisy4 ,can there be any doubt that these two ,scriptures describe the same thing1 since they also refer to the same time8 ,the lies of one can be but the covered denial of salvation in the other4 ,again1 ,satan has his assembly or congregational meeting which is his counterfeit of the visible ,church4 ,this assembly is referred to1 both in ,rev4 #b3i and #c3i1 as the synagogue of ,satan2 an organized assembly being as important for the testimony in the deep things of ,satan as it has been in the things of ,god4 ,in ,matt4 #ac the tares appear among the wheat and their appearance is said to be after the sowing of the wheat4 ,so1 also1 the children of the ,wicked one appear and are often included and even organized within the forms of the visible ,church4 ,the assembly of ,satan1 calling itself a part of the visible ,church1 is to have its ministers and teachers4 ,this is stated in ,,ii ,cor4 ,,ii3#ac-ae3 ,for such are false apostles1 deceitful workers1 transforming themselves into the apostles of ,christ4 ,and no marvel2 for ,satan himself is transformed into an angel of light4 ,therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness2 whose end shall be according to their works4 ,here is a remarkable revelation of the possible extent of the ,satanic counterfeit3 ,false apostles1 deceitful workers1 transforming themselves into apostles of ,christ and ministers of righteousness2 yet these are shown to be only agents of the great deceiver1 ,satan1 who is himself transformed into an angel of light4 ,it is evident that the method of this deception is to imitate the real ministers of ,christ4 ,certainly these false apostles cannot so appear unless they gather into their message every available form of godliness and cover their lies with the most subtle hypocrisy4 ,evil will not appear on the outside of these systems2 but they will be announced as another gospel or as a larger understanding of the previously accepted truth1 and will be all the more attractive and delusive since they are heralded by those who claim to be ministers of ,christ1 who reflect the beauty of an angel of light1 and whose lives are undoubtedly free from great temptation4 ,it should be noted1 however1 that these false ministers do not necessarily know the mission they have4 ,being unregenerate persons of the ,satanic system1 and1 so1 blinded to the real ,gospel1 they are sincere2 preaching and teaching the best things their energizing power1 the angel of light1 is pleased to reveal unto them4 ,their gospel is one of human reason1 and appeals to human resources4 ,there can be no appreciation of ,divine revelation in them1 for they have not come to really know ,god or ,his ,son1 ,jesus ,christ4 ,as all this is true1 how perilous is the attitude of many who follow attractive ministers and religious guides only because they claim to be such1 and are sincere1 and who are not awake to the one final test of doctrine by which alone the whole covered system of ,satanic lies can be distinguished from the truth of ,god4 ,in this connection ,john writes the following warning3 ,if there come any unto you1 and bring not this doctrine1 receive him not into your house1 neither bid him ,god speed 7,,ii ,jno4 #aj74 ,there yet remains one mighty element in the program of ,satan's counterfeits in addition to his outward forms1 deep doctrines1 church and ministers1--that is1 the ,man of ,sin1 the blasphemous counterfeit of the blessed ,christ2 who is yet to appear2 who will be the very incarnation of ,satan2 and whose coming is after the working of ,satan with all power and signs and lying wonders and all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish 7,,ii ,thes4 #b3i1 #aj74 ,as the whole purpose of ,god in the ages has its consummation in the yet future coming of ,christ1 so ,satan1 in imitation of the program of ,god1 has appointed a coming one 7,,ii ,thes4 #b3i71 who will be his greatest manifestation1 and upon whom he will bestow his greatest wisdom1 power and attractiveness4 ,the study of this mighty and imposing character can only be suggested in the following pages4 ,the titles of ,satan would indicate that he is attempting1 also1 in his own person1 to counterfeit the ,persons of the blessed ,trinity4 ,he appears as the god of this world in imitation of ,god the ,father2 he appears as the prince of the world in imitation of ,god the ,son2 and the spirit that now energizeth in the children of disobedience is his imitation of ,god the ,spirit1 who dwells in and energizes the true believers4 ,thus his desire to be like the ,most ,high has led him to a blasphemous attempt to imitate all the separate manifestations of the three ,persons of the ,godhead4 ,but1 since redemption1 which he proposes to hinder1 is the work of the second ,person1 ,god the ,son1 ,satan more often appears as a counterfeit of ,christ1 both in title and undertaking2 and this is the character in which he makes his last and most desperate effort before he is banished to the pit and his final judgment is begun4 ,chapter ,,viii4 ,the ,man of ,sin4 ,reference has already been made to a period of tribulation yet to come upon the earth4 ,that period is referred to in ,scripture by various figures3 ,the great tribulation1 the time of ,jacob's trouble1 and a day of darkness and gloominess1 a day of clouds and thick darkness4 ,it is also described as the culmination of the great apostasy which is predicted for the end of this age and which is emphasized in the later ,epistles of the ,new ,testament4 ,these ,epistles not only recognize a complete apostasy yet to come in this age1 but teach that the beginning of that apostasy was apparent even then at the time when they were written4 ,this teaching of the apostles finds its natural culmination in the last book of the ,bible wherein the exact development of the apostasy and the conditions to prevail in the tribulation are recorded at length4 ,all other references1 both in the ,old and the ,new ,testaments1 perfectly agree with this extended description4 ,in reference to the time of the tribulation which is thus predicted1 ,paul states in ,,ii ,thes4 #b3c ,let no man deceive you by any means3 for that day 7'the day of the ,lord'7 shall not come1 except there come a falling away first1 and that man of ,sin be revealed1 the son of perdition1 thus showing that the tribulation precedes the day of the ,lord2 and in ,rev4 #ai that day is seen to be the termination of the tribulation1 which is previously described in that book4 ,this period of tribulation is1 therefore1 to come before the ,kingdom ,age1 and to be ended by the glorious appearing of ,christ1 the ,king4 ,again1 the tribulation is to come after the true ,church has been removed2 for it should be remembered that the true believers are to be saved out of the hour of trial which shall come upon the earth to try those that dwell therein 7,rev4 #c3aj71 7the believer1 being a citizen of the heavenlies is1 therefore1 not included among those who dwell in the earth74 ,this aspect of the ,lord's return is often misunderstood4 ,he comes first1 not to the earth1 but into the air to meet ,his ,bride and gather her to ,himself2 both those that are sleeping and those that are awake3 ,for the ,lord ,himself shall descend from heaven with a shout1 with the voice of the archangel1 and with the trump of ,god3 and the dead in ,christ shall rise first3 then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds1 to meet the ,lord in the air3 and so shall we ever be with the ,lord 7,i ,thes4 #d3af1 #ag74 ,this phase of his coming is1 and has been1 imminent since the promises of his return were given2 and it is for this particular preliminary event that the ,church is taught to hope and pray1 for it will be the time of her rapture and blessedness4 ,as has been before stated1 the utter dissolution of humanity is latent in the unregenerated heart 7,rom4 #c3aj-ah71 and its own tribulation only awaits this removal of all ,divine restraint4 ,it is1 therefore1 both ,scriptural and reasonable to conclude that tribulation will instantly begin upon the earth after the first aspect of the return of ,christ when ,he comes for ,his ,church4 ,thus it may be seen that this period of unsurpassed trial upon the earth1 when the blasphemous claims of ,satan and man are to be proven and ,god's testimony is to be vindicated1 is bounded by the two events in the ,second ,coming of ,christ3 when ,he comes for ,his saints 7,i ,thes4 #d3af1 #ag71 to gather to ,himself ,his heavenly people1 and when ,he comes with ,his saints 7,rev4 #ai3aa-ba7 to be the complete fulfillment of all the covenants of ,god with ,his earthly people4 ,the actual duration of this period is marked off in ,daniel #i3bd-bg3 ,seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city1 to finish the transgression1 and to make an end of sins1 and to make reconciliation for iniquity1 and to bring in everlasting righteousness1 and to seal up the vision and prophecy1 and to anoint the most ,holy4 ,know therefore and understand1 that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build ,jerusalem unto the ,messiah the ,prince shall be seven weeks1 and three score and two weeks3 the street shall be built again1 and the wall1 even in troublous times4 ,and after the three score and two weeks shall ,messiah be cut off1 but not for himself3 and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary2 and the end thereof shall be with a flood1 and unto the end of the war desolations are determined4 ,and he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week3 and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease1 and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate1 even until the consummation1 and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate4 ,there are three distinct periods of time here indicated4 ,first3 ,seventy weeks between the time of the vision1 and the age of everlasting righteousness and anointing of the most ,holy2 or1 from the time of the vision1 to the earthly kingdom of ,christ1 which is yet future4 ,second3 ,sixty-nine weeks2 beginning to reckon from the same time1 or from the command of the ,king of ,babylon to restore ,jerusalem1 and continuing unto the death of ,christ1 which is referred to as the cutting off of the ,messiah4 ,and lastly3 ,one week1 for the overspreading of abomination and that which is determined to be poured upon the desolate4 ,history fortunately interprets the time here indicated3 for1 from the command of the ,king to rebuild ,jerusalem1 to the death of ,christ was #dhc years1 or sixty-nine weeks of seven years each4 ,this leaves but the one additional week of the seventy before the bringing in of the everlasting righteousness4 ,that one week is here described as the time of most terrible desolation and overspreading of abomination1 when the people are under a covenant with another prince4 ,this present age is as a parenthesis in ,jewish history and1 as no account is made of it in these reckonings1 the last unfulfilled week 7seven years7 of the seventy1 before the kingdom is established upon the earth1 must be the time between the gathering out of the ,church--an event which completes the purpose of this parenthetical age--and the final bringing in of the kingdom4 ,the last period of seven years of desolation is1 however1 to be shortened1 according to the words of ,christ3 ,for then shall be great tribulation1 such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time1 no1 nor ever shall be4 ,and except those days should be shortened1 there should no flesh be saved3 but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened 7,matt4 #bd3ba1 #bb74 ,it should be noticed that this period cannot be confused easily with any other1 for it is referred to as the time more terrible than any other that has ever been1 or ever will be 7,dan4 #ab3a2 ,joel #b3b2 ,matt4 #bd3ba1 #bb74 ,reference has been made at length to the tribulation period in order to make clear the exact conditions in which the ,man of ,sin is to appear2 for this mighty world-ruler makes his advent in those days of earth's darkness and gloom when all the light of ,god has been withdrawn1 and the world is left in its own helpless confusion4 ,he appears in the tribulation as the agent of ,satan after that mighty head of the ,satanic system has been cast out of heaven into the earth 7,rev4 #ab3g-ab74 ,the time of the destruction of the ,man of ,sin is also revealed in that it is mentioned as one of the events in the glorious coming of ,christ 7,dan4 #b3dd2 #g3aa-ad2 ,,ii ,thes4 #b3h2 ,rev4 #ai3bj74 ,he1 therefore1 appears as the culmination of the ,satanic effort1 and a careful study of his person and character will reveal the fact that he is the most stupendous work of ,satan in his enmity against ,god4 ,in connection with the time of the ,man of ,sin1 it is also to be noted that the believer is not directly warned against his person1 but is1 rather1 warned against the conditions that are to prevail as a preparation for his coming4 ,this is due to the fact that the true believers are to be gathered to their ,lord before that ,wicked one appears1 and they are1 therefore1 only in danger of being influenced by that which precedes and prepares for his coming4 ,his description is set forth at length only in such passages as deal with the whole and final development of the age4 ,it should also be remembered that the description of this person1 like that of the person and work of ,satan1 is from the standpoint of the holiness of ,god2 and that which the world will hail as its glorious ideal of perfection is1 in ,god's sight1 the personification of rebelliousness1 blasphemy1 and treason4 ,the order of the governments and rulers of the world in this ,gentile age is revealed to ,daniel in visions which are recorded and interpreted in the book of ,daniel4 ,in these visions the ,man of ,sin appears as the little horn of ,dan4 #g and is the last and most ,god-dishonoring world-ruler4 ,he also later appears as the desolator of ,dan4 #i3bg2 the willful ,king of ,dan4 #aa3cf2 the abomination of desolation of ,matt4 #bd3ae2 the ,man of ,sin of ,,ii ,thes4 #b3d-h2 the rider on the white horse of ,rev4 #f3b2 and the first ,beast of ,rev4 #ac4 ,his identity is certain1 even though he appears under various figures and titles2 for he1 like ,satan1 is so unique in his character1 time1 and undertakings1 that he cannot be confused easily with any other4 ,in ,daniel #b the order of the kingdoms is set forth by the figure of the great image which1 at the last1 is suddenly and violently shattered by the stone cut from the mountain without hands3 which ,stone is ,christ1 the ,corner ,stone2 and the ,stone which the builders rejected4 ,the feet and toes of this image are said to be the last manifestation of human government1 and it is this part of the image that is violently shattered by the ,stone4 ,of this termination of earthly rule it is recorded in ,dan4 #b3dd1 #de3 ,and in the days of these kings shall the ,god of heaven set up a kingdom1 which shall never be destroyed3 and the kingdom shall not be left to other people1 but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms1 and it shall stand forever4 ,for as much as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands1 and that it brake in pieces the iron1 the brass1 the clay1 the silver1 and the gold2 the great ,god hath made known to the ,king what shall come to pass hereafter2 and the dream is certain1 and the interpretation thereof sure4 ,from this chapter it may be seen that the setting up of the ,messianic ,kingdom is to be both sudden and destructive to all human governments1 and that it is in no way the result of an age of development and progressive improvement4 ,in ,dan4 #g the ,man of ,sin appears1 as has been stated1 as the little horn among ten horns2 which1 like the ten toes of the great image1 indicate the extreme end of human authority and power4 ,in this vision the latter end of the kingdoms of the earth is seen to culminate in the one most daring ruler1 the little horn1 who has a mouth speaking great things and whose look is more imposing than all others2 and he it is who makes war with the saints and prevails over them until the coming of the ,ancient of days4 ,the inspired interpretation of the vision is given in ,dan4 #g3bc-bg3 ,thus he said1 the fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth1 which shall be diverse from all kingdoms1 and shall devour the whole earth1 and shall tread it down1 and break it in pieces4 ,and the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise3 and another shall arise after them2 and he shall be diverse from the first1 and he shall subdue three kings4 ,and he shall speak great words against the most ,high1 and shall wear out the saints of the most ,high1 and think to change times and laws3 and they shall be given into ,his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time4 ,but the judgment shall sit1 and they shall take away his dominion1 to consume and destroy it unto the end4 ,and the kingdom and dominion1 and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven1 shall be given to the people of the saints of the most ,high1 whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom1 and all dominion shall serve and obey ,him4 ,in ,dan4 #aa the reign of the ,man of ,sin1 the willful king1 is prophesied in detail2 and the fact is stated that the reign and the blasphemous attitude of this last great ruler are both in the purpose of ,god4 ,a portion of this remarkable passage is here given3 ,and the king shall do according to his will2 and he shall exalt himself1 and magnify himself above every ,god1 and shall speak marvellous things against the ,god of gods1 and shall prosper until the indignation be accomplished3 for that that is determined shall be done4 ,neither shall he regard the ,god of his fathers1 nor the desire of women1 nor regard any god3 for he shall magnify himself above all4 ,but in his estate shall he honor the ,god of forces3 and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honor with gold1 and silver1 and with precious stones1 and pleasant things4 ,thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god1 whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory3 and he shall cause them to rule over many1 and shall divide the land for gain4 ,this last verse is more clearly translated and he will practice in the strongholds of fortresses with a strange god2 whoso acknowledgeth him will be increased with glory2 and he shall cause them to rule over the many1 and shall divide the land to them for a reward 7,dan4 #aa3cf-ci74 ,beside the collossal disregard for ,god1 this passage presents several important revelations4 ,first3 ,the expression the ,god of his fathers would seem to indicate that the ,man of ,sin would come from a lineage of ,christians4 ,second3 ,his disregard for the desire of women is evidence of his hatred of the true ,messiah2 for this reference is probably to the desire of every ,jewish woman to be the mother of ,messiah4 ,third3 ,those who acknowledge the strange god1 7,satan71 whom he honors1 will be prospered1 and the land will be divided unto them and he will give them authority and glory4 ,in the ,new ,testament the ,man of ,sin is described as the one who comes in his own name1 whom men will receive 7,jno4 #e3dc72 that man of sin1 the son of perdition 7,,ii ,thes4 #b3c72 that ,wicked one 7,,ii ,thes4 #b3h72 and the beast 7,rev4 #ac3a71 and to him ,satan gives all the power and glory he offered to ,christ 7,lu4 #d3e1 #f74 ,of the many references to him1 two passages deal with him at length4 ,in the first 7,,ii ,thes4 #b3a-aj71 his coming is mentioned as directly following the removal of ,god's present restraint from the earth2 and in the second 7,rev4 #ac3a-h71 as has been shown1 his coming is said to directly follow the casting of ,satan from heaven into the earth 7,rev4 #ab3g-ab71 and continues until the glorious appearing of ,christ1 which is described in ,rev4 #ai and #bj4 ,the former passage 7,,ii ,thes4 #b3a-aj7 is as follows3 ,now1 we beseech you1 brethren1 by the coming of our ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 and by our gathering together unto ,him1 that ye be not soon shaken in mind1 or be troubled1 neither by spirit1 nor by word1 nor by letter as from us1 as that the day of ,christ is at hand4 ,let no man deceive you by any means3 for that day shall not come1 except there come a falling away first1 and that man of sin be revealed1 the son of perdition2 who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called ,god1 or that is worshipped2 so that he as ,god sitteth in the temple of ,god1 shewing himself that he is ,god4 ,remember ye not1 that1 when ,i was yet with you1 ,i told you these things8 ,and1 now1 ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time4 ,for the mystery of iniquity doth already work3 only he who now letteth 7restrains7 will let1 until he be taken out of the way4 ,and then shall that ,wicked 7one7 be revealed1 whom the ,lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth1 and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming2 even him1 whose coming is after the working of ,satan with all power and signs and lying wonders1 and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish2 because they receive not the love of the truth1 that they might be saved4 ,in this passage it is predicted of this mighty person that he will assume to be very ,god1 sitting in the temple as ,god1 and winning the worship of the multitude by his miraculous power1 signs1 and lying wonders2 deceiving all who perish1 and who would not receive the love of the truth that they might be saved4 ,still another and more striking description of this person is given in the second passage just mentioned 7,rev4 #ac3a-h73 ,and ,i stood upon the sand of the sea1 and saw a beast rise up out of the sea1 having seven heads and ten horns1 and upon his horns ten crowns1 and upon his heads the name of blasphemy4 ,and the beast which ,i saw was like unto a leopard1 and his feet were as the feet of a bear1 and his mouth as the mouth of a lion3 and the dragon 7,satan7 gave him his power1 and his seat1 and his great authority4 ,and ,i saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death2 and his deadly wound was healed3 and all the world wondered after the beast4 ,and they worshipped the dragon 7,satan7 which gave power unto the beast2 and they worshipped the beast1 saying1 ,who is like unto the beast8 ,who is able to make war with him8 ,and there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies2 and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months4 ,and he opened his mouth in blasphemy against ,god1 to blaspheme ,his name1 and his tabernacle1 and them that dwell in heaven4 ,and it was given unto him to make war with the saints1 and to overcome them3 and power was given him over all kindreds1 and tongues1 and nations4 ,and all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him1 whose names are not written in the book of life of the ,lamb slain from the foundation of the world4 ,the first1 and1 it would seem1 most important thing that is stated of this being in this ,scripture is that one of his heads was1 as it were1 wounded to death1 and his deadly wound was healed4 ,some have claimed this to be a reference to a previous political defeat followed by reinstatement to power4 ,the expression is1 however1 most suggestive and significant as an attempt on the part of ,satan to imitate1 in the ,man of ,sin1 that which was the supreme miracle of the ,christ--,his death and resurrection4 ,the effort is plainly effective2 more so than a mere shifting of political fortune could possibly be2 for the statement follows3 ,all the world wondered after the beast who had received the deadly wound and yet lived4 ,after they wondered1 they worshipped4 ,first they worshipped ,satan1 who performed the mighty miracle2 and then they worshipped the beast1 saying1 ,who is like unto the beast8 who is able to make war with him8 ,the terrible blasphemy of the ,man of ,sin has been emphasized in all ,scripture references to him1 and is here still more vividly pictured4 ,the time he is to continue is said to be forty and two months1 which would be one-half the tribulation period2 and this statement is probably not at all figurative4 ,by his overwhelming supernatural power and wisdom he gains authority over every living thing in the ,satanic system1 excepting those recorded in the ,lamb's book of life4 ,these are not brought under his governing power4 ,the latter part of the chapter presents still another mighty person1 who is also called a beast1 but later appears as the false prophet 7,rev4 #ai3bj72 and who exercises all the power of the first beast1 and receives his power from the dragon1 ,satan4 ,much is said of this second beast1 but his mission is in no way to attract attention to himself4 ,he co-operates in gaining world-wide worship and authority for the first beast1 whose deadly wound was healed4 ,the second beast seems to deal directly with the people and by his mighty signs and miracles1 as well as by his authority1 he compels loyalty to the first beast4 ,fire is called down from heaven2 and a dumb idol is made to speak and live4 ,he is able to establish a union of all people in trade1 imposing a death penalty upon them4 ,and by all these means he furthers the interests of the first beast4 ,the ,scripture here referred to is as follows3 ,and ,i beheld another beast coming up out of the earth2 and he had two horns like a lamb1 and he spake as a dragon 7,satan74 ,and he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him1 and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast1 whose deadly wound was healed4 ,and he doeth great wonders1 so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men1 and deceiveth them that dwell on the earth1 by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast2 saying to them that dwell on the earth1 that they should make an image to the beast1 which had the wound by a sword1 and did live4 ,and he had power to give life unto the image of the beast1 that the image of the beast should both speak1 and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed4 ,and he causeth all1 both small and great1 rich and poor1 free and bond1 to receive a mark in their right hand1 or in their foreheads3 and that no man might buy or sell1 save he that had the mark1 or the name of the beast1 or the number of his name4 ,here is wisdom4 ,let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast3 for it is the number of a man2 and his number is ,six hundred three score and six 7,rev4 #ac3aa-ah74 ,there is a deep suggestion1 in the person of this second beast1 of a counterfeit of the ,holy ,spirit of ,god4 ,he who came not to speak of ,himself1 but to glorify ,christ and to unite all believers2 leading them in worship and praise4 ,this second beast is probably identical with ,anti-christ1 who appears under that title only in the writings of ,john1 and who is there seen as the consummation of a long succession of false religious teachers who have denied the ,christ and ,his sacrificial work4 ,when the testimony of all ,scripture upon the ,man of ,sin is considered1 he is seen to be a person whose superhuman power is plainly ascribed to ,satan4 ,he appears upon the scene1 after the removal of the heavenly people and during the great tribulation1 as the climax of all ,satanic exaltation and opposition to ,god4 ,he is the last and greatest of earthly rulers1 and1 from his position of unsurpassed influence1 speaks great words and manifests great wisdom4 ,he is externally religious1 and the promoter of great righteous projects and principles which in ,god's sight are only hypocrisy and blasphemy because of the subtle ,christ-denying motive which prompts it all4 ,his hold upon the public mind is by a process which is natural4 ,great miracles are performed by himself and by his prophet1--fire is called down from heaven2 a dumb idol is made to speak and live2 and he himself has been wounded to death and yet lives4 ,by such supernatural works his assumption to be very ,god is accepted1 and he becomes the world's ideal of all that is supreme4 ,the people are said to first marvel and wonder2 then to worship at his feet2 and at last1 in mad devotion1 they challenge the universe to produce his equal--,who is like the beast8 they cry4 ,he has been wounded to death and yet lives2 he performs as great miracles as the world has ever seen2 his teachings are based upon ,scripture2 and he must1 therefore1 be ,god manifest in the flesh4 ,his wisdom1 beauty and majesty are a seeming warrant for every element of adoration4 ,thus the ,man of ,sin will appear as the culmination of all the counterfeit methods of ,satan2 which method had its beginnings in the last days of the age1 even before the calling away of the true ,church1 the ,body of ,christ4 ,the subtle doctrines of devils will be adopted as creeds in assemblies and so called churches1 and these deep things1 with the ,satanic ambition for moral improvement1 will be voiced by ordained ministers who appear as apostles of ,christ and ministers of righteousness4 ,yet in ,god's sight it is all a deep lie and hypocrisy1 for they are distorting ,his truth and subtly denying ,his redemption4 ,all this1 as has been stated1 is but the ,satanic preparation of humanity that they may wholly acknowledge him as their god1 and that he may himself become like the ,most ,high4 ,this program is permitted in the purpose of ,god1 for that that is determined shall be done 7,dan4 ,,ii3#cf74 ,it will be only for a moment2 for the resistless coming of the ,ancient of ,days will unveil all this deception1 banish the enemies1 and bring in ,his own long-predicted and glorious reign of everlasting blessedness upon the earth4 ,chapter ,,ix4 ,the ,fatal ,omission4 ,to some extent it has been necessary to anticipate the subject of this chapter in dealing with those counterfeits which are predicted for the last days1 when there will be found a form of godliness1 denying the power thereof1 and also the deep doctrines of devils which are lies in hypocrisy4 ,this chapter deals with that which is so vital in the true faith1 and which is to be so carefully omitted in the false2 that which makes the true so potent1 and without which the false becomes an immeasurable deception4 ,everything depends upon this one point of distinction2 for1 according to prophecy1 it is the only difference that is finally to exist between the false and the true4 ,the issue is1 therefore1 as important as life itself4 ,it has already been seen that the method of counterfeiting1 if successful1 will require ,satan to appropriate and incorporate in his false systems every available principle of the true2 for the deception of the counterfeit depends wholly upon its likeness to the real4 ,herein is revealed the reason for calling that a lie or deception which is externally so like the truth4 ,certainly there could be no greater pitfall for souls than a system which seems to be the truth of ,god1 and yet robs its followers of any basis for a true hope1 and it will be found that the most terrible condemnation of ,scripture is uttered against such systems and their promoters4 ,in seeking to discover the actual point of difference between the false and the true1 it will be well1 first1 to consider the present perverted relation which exists between the ,creator and the fallen human creature2 for herein is revealed the necessity of that which ,god proposes to accomplish by redemption4 ,two important points in ,satan's doctrine were announced by him in the ,garden of ,eden when he first approached the woman1 and these two declarations kave been an important part of the world's creeds throughout the history of man4 ,the first was a bold denial of a positive statement of ,god1 when ,satan said3 ,ye shall not surely die4 ,whether ,satan intended here simply to deny the truth of ,god's statement1 or whether he overestimated his own resources and proposed to shield them from their ,god-appointed doom1 is not clear4 ,certainly the latter view is in keeping with ,satan's original purpose1 as well as with his evident sincerity4 ,it is quite reasonable to conclude that1 if he could be so misguided as to attempt to be like the ,most ,high1 he would willingly have undertaken to protect man from judgment which followed as a result of loyalty to himself4 ,satan is striving1 at any rate1 to direct the lives of those who are under his power into a degree of self development that will be a substitute for the revealed purpose of ,god for men4 ,the second announcement of ,satan assured the woman that they would1 by this independent action1 be as ,god2 and this1 so far from promising death1 seemed to them the immediate realization of the highest human ideal4 ,it was undoubtedly the original purpose of ,god in creation that humanity should eventually become like ,himself4 ,by what process of development this was to have been accomplished1 had not sin entered1 has not been revealed4 ,it is enough to know that even after man had fallen from his high estate through sin1 this ,divine purpose was not abandoned1 though the problems involved were immeasurably increased3 and now1 through the unsearchable riches of ,his grace1 the realization of that which surpasses all human dreams has been made possible1 even to fallen and polluted man4 ,the consummation of the transforming work of ,god is thus described3 ,for whom ,he did foreknow1 ,he did also predestinate to be conformed to the image of ,his ,son 7,rom4 #h3bi74 ,beloved1 now are we the sons of ,god1 and it doth not yet appear what we shall be3 but we know that1 when ,he shall appear1 we shall be like ,him2 for we shall see ,him as ,he is 7,i ,jno4 #c3b74 ,when ,christ1 who is our life1 shall appear1 then shall ye also appear with ,him in glory 7,col4 #c3d74 ,now unto him that is able to keep you from falling1 and to present you faultless before the presence of ,his glory with exceeding joy 7,jude #bd74 ,for our citizenship is in heaven2 whence also we wait for a ,saviour1 the ,lord ,jesus ,christ3 who shall fashion anew the body of our humiliation1 that it may be conformed to the body of his glory1 according to the working whereby ,he is able even to subject all things unto ,himself 7,phil4 #c3bj1 #ba ,r4,v474 ,it is natural that ,satan should suggest to humanity that which had been the object of his own unholy ambition2 and especially is it natural1 since by such a separation of humanity from its ,god1 he could claim that authority over them1 and secure that worship from them1 which he so much craved4 ,there are1 then1 at least two distinct methods proposed for the uplifting of humanity1 and these are brought into sharp contrast2 for one is of ,satan1 and the other is of ,god4 ,since both these methods claim to aim at the same end--though one ideal is not worthy to be compared with the other--the method1 alone1 forms the first point for discussion4 ,under the ,satanic control1 man has always been strangely influenced in the matter of his relation to his ,creator4 ,he1 too1 has been willing to assume a hopeless position of independence toward ,god2 and1 under that abnormal relation1 he has gone out alone to grope his way2 blindly seeking to build his own character1 and by education and cultivation to improve his natural heart1 which ,god has pronounced humanly incurable4 ,he has also bent his inventive skill to the development of means by which ,god-imposed labor may be avoided2 and much of his selfish greed springs from a desire to purchase a substitute who shall bear for him the discomfort of a sweating brow4 ,god is not in all his thoughts2 nor has he any disposition to claim the help of ,god upon the terms upon which it is offered4 ,the ,satanic method for life prompts him to become a god by a process of self-help and development of the finite resources4 ,it is very possible and natural to introduce much of religious form into the world system of self-help2 for there is a great field for religious exercise for the one who is attempting to make himself ,godlike1 and there is endless material for supplication and prayer that all available assistance may be secured to aid one in that humanly impossible task4 ,a devout spirit is1 therefore1 a natural part of the ,satanic doctrine1 and the predicted forms of godliness will naturally appear4 ,there is a vast difference between an individual supplicating ,god to save him3 and one supplicating ,god to help him save himself4 ,the latter is a natural part of the ,satanic plan and has no promise of ,divine favor upon it4 ,all such religious exercise1 though full of outward forms and deep sincerity1 leaves its moral aspirants doomed1 alike with the most degraded1 to as everlasting separation and banishment from the presence of ,god3 which things have indeed a show of wisdom in will worship1 and humility1 and severity to the body2 but are not of any value against the indulgence of the flesh 7,col4 #b3bc ,r4,v474 ,such prayer and religious practice do not really place the saving work in the hands of ,god1 but mockingly ask ,him to give ,his sanction and assistance to that which wholly dishonors and really disregards ,him1 and which is also both unreasonable and impossible4 ,though the process by which unfallen man would have reached a higher development has not been revealed1 it is certain that he would have been then1 as now1 wholly dependent upon the ,creator4 ,man's present independence toward ,god is the blindest delusion of the fallen nature2 for complete independence cannot even be assumed in the least of all temporal things3 how much less is it possible in that which is spiritual6 ,again1 the self-saving principle is utter folly1 since ,god must demand a quality which no human can present4 ,god's requirement is not unreasonable1 however1 for ,he also proposes to bestow1 in grace1 all ,he ever demands4 ,the absolute holiness of ,god demands no less than holiness in all who are acceptable to ,him2 yet ,he has never mocked man by asking him to make himself acceptable1 or even to attempt to do it by ,divine help4 ,true salvation is wholly a work of ,god4 ,it is said to be both a finished work and a gift1 and1 therefore1 it lays no obligation upon the saved one to complete it himself1 or to make after payments of service for it2 though the saved one is called upon to serve from another and more glorious motive4 ,the ,divine terms of obtainment into ,godlikeness are clearly stated in the ,scriptures2 but the hopeless estimate ,god has placed upon human nature at its best1 and the logical necessity that man shall receive1 as a gift1 all that he has1 and be forever a debtor to the ,divine giver1--these things have always been rejected by self-sufficient and ,satan-inspired humanity4 ,these terms are the only possible or reasonable relations that could rightfully exist between fallen humanity and its ,creator4 ,here ,satan has blinded the minds of the lost lest they should believe1 and he has made that which is reasonable and natural seem to be unreasonable and unnatural4 ,they are unable to abandon their ,satan-inspired sense of self-sufficiency and independence of ,god and receive from ,him1 as a gift1 every possession commendable in ,his sight4 ,the controversy between ,satan-ruled man and ,god is one of method2 whether it shall be one of self-righteousness and character building3 or one of bestowed righteousness and character by the fruit of the ,spirit4 ,will man try to save himself3 or humbly submit to being saved by ,another8 ,will he try to conform himself to what little he knows to be good and true3 or will he be transformed by the power of ,god into that which is no less than the image of ,christ8 ,will he present the sacrifice of a sincere effort to be moral and religious3 or accept the ,god-provided sacrifice for all sin1 in the shed blood of ,christ8 ,will he try to establish himself before ,god on the ground of his own works3 or rest in the finished work of ,christ for him8 ,will he try to improve his fallen nature3 or partake of the ,divine nature and become a ,son of ,god by the power of ,god1 through faith in ,christ ,jesus8 ,one method1 it may be seen1 depends wholly upon self for its realization2 promises glory to man alone2 and has its origin at that unknown time when ,satan proposed in his heart to become like the ,most ,high4 ,the other method is dependent upon ,god alone1 and1 therefore1 demands an attitude of faith toward him for its realization4 ,it issues in glory to the ,creator1 ,who alone is worthy to be praised4 ,the latter1 in contrast with ,satan's method1 had its origin in the purpose of ,god1 which ,he purposed before the foundation of the world4 ,therein1 transcendent blessings are offered2 stores of grace are unfolded2 and the omnipotent power of ,god is seen working for the transformation of ,his human creatures4 ,these two methods are confused only because they seem to aim at the same general result4 ,in reality their results1 like their methods1 are not only incomparable1 but they are as far removed from each other as ,god's ways are higher than man's ways4 ,the revelation of ,god in regard to salvation might have been limited to the fact that ,he1 rather than man1 was to accomplish the work2 and while much that is involved in the mighty undertaking of redemption has not been1 and probably cannot be1 reduced to the level of human understanding1 ,he saw fit to reveal much that was necessary1 on both the ,godward and the manward side1 in providing this way of salvation4 ,no human conception of the atonement is complete1 yet1 as the all-sufficient sacrificial death of ,christ is clearly stated in ,scripture1 its value1 though unanalyzed1 may be appropriated2 for man is not saved by what he comprehends or understands1 but his salvation is made possible by his attitude of willingness and expectation toward the transforming power of ,god4 ,in determining the exact point of the truth that is to be omitted from the ,satanic counterfeit1 it is important to distinguish between the ,person and work of ,christ4 ,in the one is included ,his teachings and example1 both in ,his life and death3 in the other is included ,his substitutionary1 sacrificial1 and atoning death for the sin of the world4 ,there is no controversy as to the value of the teachings and example of ,jesus2 but the wisdom of this world is displayed in ever-increasing antagonism against the blood of the ,cross4 ,this enmity has never been founded on the ,word of ,god1 for ,scripture does not deny itself4 ,the opposition appeals to pride and human reason1 and dares to challenge the plain statements of ,scripture on this particular point4 ,very much is thus omitted2 for all the meaning of sacrifice in the ,old ,testament and all the promises of redemption in the ,new ,testament1 are inseparably related to the blood of the ,cross4 ,it may be to the ,jew a stumbling block1 and to the ,greek foolishness2 yet to those who are called1 both ,jews and ,greeks1 it is the power of ,god and the wisdom of ,god4 ,in ,ephesians1 the eternal purpose of ,god is said to be the complete perfection of souls3 ,according as ,he hath chosen us in ,him before the foundation of the world1 that we should be holy and without blame before ,him in love 7#a3d74 ,and that transformation is also said to be by the blood of ,christ3 ,in whom we have redemption through his blood1 the forgiveness of sins1 according to the riches of ,his grace 7#a3g74 ,in like manner the object of this transformation is said to be that the ,church may be the present and eternal manifestation of the wisdom1 love and power of ,god3 ,to the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of ,god 7#c3aj74 ,that in the ages to come ,he might show the exceeding riches of ,his grace in ,his kindness toward us through ,christ ,jesus 7#b3g74 ,and what is the exceeding greatness of his power to usward who believe1 according to the working of ,his mighty power1 which ,he wrought in ,christ1 when ,he raised ,him from the dead1 and set ,him at ,his own right hand in the heavenlies 7#a3ai1 #bj74 ,there is also a strong contrast of figures used in the ,old ,testament which accurately emphasizes the mighty power of the ,creator in the regeneration of a soul4 ,in ,psalm #h3c the creation of the solar system is mentioned as the work of the fingers of ,god3 ,when ,i consider ,thy heavens1 the work of ,thy fingers1 the moon and the stars1 which thou hast ordained1 but in ,isa4 #ec3a1 where the substitutionary sacrifice of ,christ is referred to1 it is spoken of as the effort of the ,creator's arm3 ,who hath believed our report8 and to whom is the arm of the ,lord revealed8 ,the suggestion here given1 that the creation of a universe is the work of ,his fingers1 and the regeneration of souls is the work of ,his mighty arm1 is not overdrawn2 for the price of redemption cannot be measured by corruptible things1 such as gold and silver3 but is purchased at the price of the precious blood of ,christ1 as of a lamb without blemish and without spot 7,i ,pet4 #a3ai74 ,the ,scriptures abound in statements that regeneration1 and the whole transforming work of redemption1 are accomplished on the ground of the sacrificial blood of the ,cross2 and if these statements of ,scripture are rejected1 the discussion never can be one of interpretation of ,scripture1 but becomes a question of the authority of the testimony of the ,bible4 ,a few of these passages are here given3 ,surely ,he hath borne our griefs1 and carried our sorrows3 yet we did esteem him stricken1 smitten of ,god1 and afflicted4 ,but ,he was wounded for our transgressions1 ,he was bruised for our iniquities3 the chastisement of our peace was upon ,him2 and with ,his stripes we are healed4 ,all we like sheep have gone astray2 we have turned every one to his own way2 and the ,,lord hath laid on ,him the iniquity of us all 7,isa4 #ec3d-f74 ,even as the ,son of man came not to be ministered unto1 but to minister1 and to give ,his life a ransom for many 7,matt4 #bj3bh74 ,behold the ,lamb of ,god1 which taketh away the sin of the world 7,jno4 #aabi74 ,whom ,god hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in ,his blood 7,rom4 #c3be74 ,but ,god commendeth ,his love toward us1 in that1 while we were yet sinners1 ,christ died for us4 ,much more then1 being now justified by ,his blood1 we shall be saved from wrath through ,him 7,rom4 #e3h1 #i74 ,for ,he hath made ,him to be sin for us1 who knew no sin2 that we might be made the righteousness of ,god in ,him 7,,ii ,cor4 #e3ba74 ,who gave himself for our sins1 that ,he might deliver us from this present evil world1 according to the will of ,god and our ,father 7,gal4 #a3d74 ,and every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices1 which can never take away sins3 but this man1 after ,he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever1 sat down on the right hand of ,god2 from henceforth expecting till ,his enemies be made ,his footstool4 ,for by one offering ,he hath perfected forever them that are sanctified 7,heb4 #aj3aa-ad74 ,who ,his own self bare our sins in ,his own body on the tree1 that we1 being dead to sins1 should live unto righteousness3 by whose stripes ye were healed 7,i ,pet4 #b3bd74 ,for ,christ also hath once suffered for sins1 the just for the unjust1 that ,he might bring us to ,god1 being put to death in the flesh1 but quickened by the ,spirit 7,i ,pet4 #c3ah74 ,and ,he is the propitiation for our sins3 and not for ours only1 but also for the sins of the whole world 7,i ,jno4 #b3b74 ,from the foregoing passages it may be seen that1 according to the ,scriptures1 the stupendous transformation of regeneration is not only the greatest ,divine undertaking1 but is directly accomplished by the sacrificial death and shed blood of ,christ1 and is sealed in security by the ,holy ,spirit of promise4 ,the sacrificial death of ,christ presents the only gateway for fallen man from the power and final doom of ,satan to the glory and transcendent light of ,god2 and there is nothing strange in the ,satan-inspired offence of the ,cross which is often garnished with culture1 worldly wisdom1 and religious forms4 ,even in ,paul's time there were those who were enemies of the ,cross of ,christ3 ,for many walk1 of whom ,i have told you often1 and now tell you even weeping1 that they are the enemies of the cross of ,christ 7,phil4 #c3ah74 ,these were evidently recognized leaders in the ,christian fellowship1 who were undoubtedly ardent admirers of the ,person of ,jesus1 as revealed in ,his earthly life and example3 yet ,paul does not hesitate to mention his own tears at the fatal omission in their preaching2 for they were enemies of the ,cross of ,christ4 ,again1 it is predicted in ,,ii ,pet4 #b3a1 #b that a fierce enmity against the ,cross should appear3 ,but there were false prophets also among the people1 even as there shall be false teachers among you1 who privily shall bring in damnable heresies1 even denying the ,lord that bought them1 and bring upon themselves swift destruction4 ,and many shall follow their pernicious ways2 by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of4 ,here again the denial is against the purchase or redeeming work of ,christ rather than ,his ,person or character4 ,they are offended at the ,lord who bought them1 though they may be devoted to the ,lord who taught them4 ,these ,satanic agents are here1 as before1 described as those who seem to be teachers in the true faith1 yet they bring in damnable heresies1 in all covered subtlety1 which crystallizes in a denial of the redemption that is in ,christ4 ,being only blinded unregenerate men1 they may suppose themselves to be ministers of righteousness and apostles of ,christ2 their humanitarian dreams may inspire tireless effort and zeal2 their doctrine may become world-wide in its influence2 and they may drive their mighty ecclesiastical machinery by the injunctions of ,scripture3 yet if the curtain could be lifted1 their angel of light would be found to be ,satan2 working through them to resist the purpose of ,god2 and themselves the ministers of ,satan2 speaking lies in hypocrisy2 having their conscience seared as with a hot iron1 daring in their exalted position to devitalize the ,gospel of its power unto salvation1 and dragging immortal souls after them into hell4 ,it is not strange that there is resentment against the mystery of the ,cross which does not exist against any other inexplicable fact in the world4 ,it is not strange that the ministers of ,satan1 appearing as the apostles of ,christ and ministers of righteousness1 should fortify their lies and hypocrisies by contending for every phase of revealed truth2 grounding their authority so positively in the ,scriptures of truth3 yet subtly omitting1 or violently denying1 the one and only point upon which the interests of ,god and ,satan divide4 ,it is not strange that there is a wide call for a restatement of the truth1 which usually proposes to omit the new birth and substitute self-effort to be good1 and character building1 in its place4 ,it is not strange that the wise and cultured of this world feel their aesthetic natures shocked by the blood of the ,cross1 yet entertain no sense of their own abhorrent pollution in the sight of the infinitely holy ,one4 ,it is not strange that the world assumes to have advanced beyond that which is repeatedly said to be the manifestation of the wisdom of ,god2 branding as bigots1 insincere1 or ignorant1 all who still hold to the whole testimony of ,god4 ,it is not strange that the atonement by blood is omitted1 for it is ,satan's hour and the power of darkness1 and the true child of ,god must patiently bear the ever-increasing reproaches of his crucified ,lord1 until the glory dawns and the shadows flee away4 ,chapter ,x ,modern ,devices4 ,it has been the privilege and duty of the ,church throughout her history to be looking for the return of the ,one to whom she has been espoused4 ,had her eyes never wandered from that expectant gaze1 she would have been saved much sorrow and shame at ,his coming1 for she has lost her ,scriptural character and much of her witnessing power whenever she has said ,my ,lord delayeth his coming4 ,it is then that she has fallen to beating the manservants and the maidservants1 and has become drunken with the wine of this world4 ,true devotion to ,christ must naturally issue in a deep desire to be with ,him and to see ,him face to face2 and though it is quite possible to have been misled or untaught in regard to the conditions of ,his coming1 the contemplation of such a promise from ,him can but kindle a glowing hope in a truly devoted heart4 ,it is a direct contradiction to claim supreme affection for ,him1 and yet be careless of ,his promised return1 or wholly contented while separated from ,him4 ,the world1 that cannot comprehend such devotion to ,christ1 will easily chide the believer1 and denounce him for what they now call his other worldness when his affections are set on things above1 where ,christ sitteth at the right hand of ,god1 and when his heart rejoices in the certain hope that when ,christ1 who is our life1 shall appear1 then shall ye also appear with ,him in glory4 ,it was necessary for ,satan to rob the ,church1 to a great extent1 of her blessed hope of ,christ's return1 before he could attract attention to his own attempts at world improvement1 and establish his own authority as ruler over this age4 ,expectation along the ,god-appointed lines must be abandoned1 for the most part1 before humanity can be federated1 and religious institutions be made to co-operate in the ,satanic program4 ,this vital key-truth of the imminent return of ,christ was1 therefore1 first discredited1 and then followed by an attack upon the deity of the ,son of ,god and ,his sacrificial death2 which attack is ever increasing1 and must increase to the very end4 ,the body of truth concerning the ,lord's return is so extensive that there have always been some humble and devout souls who have dared to believe ,his promises1 and thus the real ,church1 to some extent1 her watch has been keeping4 ,the mighty tool in ,satan's hands for the destroying of the hope of ,christ's coming has been a simple one3 zealous souls have been found who1 ignoring the statements of ,scripture1 would attempt to fix the day of ,his coming4 ,then1 as their prophecy failed1 the world and many in the ,church have laughed them to scorn4 ,unfortunately they came to laugh also at the very promise of ,god1 saying1 ,where is the promise of his coming8 and in so doing they have fulfilled some of the very things that are predicted for the end of the age3 ,knowing this first1 that there shall come in the last days scoffers1 walking after their own lusts 7desires71 and saying1 ,where is the promise of ,his coming8 for since the fathers fell asleep1 all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation 7,,ii ,pet4 #c3c1 #d74 ,thus ,satan's authority is being established4 ,the exact time of ,christ's return has not been revealed2 nor will it be announced by a prophet4 ,nevertheless1 the children of light and the children of the day are not in darkness that that day should overtake them as a thief 7,i ,thes4 #e3d1e74 ,it is their privilege to rejoice in every promise of ,his coming1 and to recognize every new indication of ,his nearness1 as eagerly as the betrothed awaits her beloved4 ,the true believer's glory1 as well as his union with loved ones in ,christ1 is imminent1 and by faith he can look beyond the days of the earth's greatest anguish1 and1 seeing the triumph of all blessedness1 he can rejoice in the hope of ,his ,lord's coming1 and be praying1 ,even so1 come1 ,lord ,jesus4 ,it is1 therefore1 impossible to know how much of time yet remains for the gathering out of the ,bride and the development of ,satan's rule2 yet it is evident that within the last generation the exact fulfillment of those things which are predicted for the last days has begun1 and is even now developing faster than the mind can comprehend4 ,not all the signs of the times have a place in these pages1 but only such as are directly connected with the working of ,satan4 ,since the blood redemption of the ,cross is the central truth and value of the true faith1 it being the power of ,god unto salvation 7,rom4 #a3af2 ,i ,cor4 #a3bc1 #bd71 any counterfeit system of doctrine which would omit this essential1 must force some secondary truth into the place of prominence4 ,any of the great ,scriptural subjects which are of universal interest to humanity1 such as physical health1 immortality1 morality1 or religious forms1 may be substituted in the false systems1 for that which is vital4 ,and while those subjects are all found in their proper relations and importance in the true faith1 the fact that people are universally inclined to give attention to them furnishes an opportunity for ,satan to make a strong appeal to humanity through them2 using these subjects as central truths in his false and counterfeit systems4 ,many are easily led to fix their attention upon the secondary things1 and to neglect wholly the one primary thing2 especially is this true since the secondary things are tangible and seen3 while the one essential thing is spiritual and unseen2 and ,satan has blinded their eyes toward that which is of eternal value4 ,a system of doctrine may1 then1 be formed which includes every truth of ,scripture save one2 exalting the ,person of ,christ1 but not ,his atoning work1 and emphasizing some secondary truth as its central value4 ,this system will be readily accepted by blinded humanity1 though the real power of ,god unto salvation has been carefully withdrawn4 ,naturally it would be supposed that such ,satan-inspired systems would have no value or power1 since there could be no ,divine favor upon them4 ,such a supposition would be possible only because of the prevailing misunderstanding as to the real power of ,satan4 ,if the description given of him in ,scripture is accepted1 he will be seen to be possessed with miraculous power2 able to perform such marvels that the whole world is led to wonder and then to worship4 ,he is free also to bestow this miraculous power upon others 7,rev4 #ac3b74 ,so it is no marvel if his ministers1 who appear as the ministers of righteousness1 are able to exert superhuman power when it is directly in the interest of the ,satanic projects4 ,the great power of ,satan has doubtless been active along these lines during all the ages past2 for it is impossible that humanity should have worshipped other gods blindly without some recompense1 and it is ,satan himself who has been thus worshipped 7,lev4 #ag3g2 ,,ii ,chron4 #aa3ae2 ,rev4 #i3bj74 ,it is not final evidence1 therefore1 that a system of doctrine is of ,god simply because there are accompanying manifestations of superhuman power2 nor is it final evidence that the ,almighty has responded1 simply because any form of supplication has been answered4 ,the ,divine movements are1 of necessity1 limited by the laws of ,his own holiness1 and access into ,his presence is by the blood of ,jesus alone2 by a new and living ,way which was consecrated for us through ,his flesh 7,heb4 #aj3ai1 #bj74 ,assuming to come before ,god in prayer1 but ignoring this truth1 is but to insult1 with pollution1 ,him who is infinitely ,holy and pure4 ,satan1 who is aspiring to the place of the ,almighty1 may answer the prayer of his own subjects1 even though that prayer is blindly addressed to the ,supreme ,being4 ,surely the ,satan-ruled world does not come before ,god by the blood of ,jesus4 ,though false systems of doctrine have always existed1 counterfeits in hypocrisy are a distinct characteristic of the last days of the present age4 ,and it is a most significant fact that within the last generation such systems have appeared and are rapidly multiplying3 systems that borrow every phase of the true faith1 but one1 and are conspicuous in that they emphasize some secondary truth with what seems1 at times1 to be miraculous power4 ,multitudes are being won to these creeds1 both because of their apparent religious aspect1 and by the actual results they accomplish4 ,there is probably no subject of more universal interest than that of physical health2 and but recently ,christian ,science has appeared1 which chiefly emphasizes physical health4 ,while it gathers into itself some elements that are foreign both to ,christianity and to ,science1 and appropriates much from the field of psychology1 it assumes to be an infallible interpretation of ,scripture1 and makes ,jesus its highest exponent and teacher4 ,yet it positively denies even the reality of sin and the need of ,christ's atoning sacrifice4 ,its followers are won and held by these religious claims1 and by the actual physical and mental transformations that are secured4 ,nothing but ignorance will attempt to deny that1 to some extent1 its claims are real4 ,that it has assemblies1 ministers1 and mysteries deep and profound1 and that it is able to demonstrate its claims of physical transformation1 does not lift it above the level of ,satan's power4 ,that it denies even the need of the blood of the ,cross1 separates it1 in spite of its claims1 from the ,god of the ,scriptures1 and brands it with every characteristic of ,satan's counterfeit4 ,another subject1 already mentioned1 which is of common interest to humanity1 is immortality4 ,how persistently man has sought to see beyond the veil6 ,and yet how little of fact has been discovered1 beyond that which it has pleased ,god to reveal in ,his ,word6 ,how strong is the desire of the heart to follow the departed into the great unseen6 ,and how subtle is ,spiritism in its election of a phase of the immortality question as its bait to beguile sorrow-crushed souls into a disregard of their only hope in the blood of ,christ4 ,this system has existed from the earliest ages and has the unqualified condemnation of ,scripture2 yet in the last half-century it has taken new interest and dignity to itself under the modern title of ,psychical ,research4 ,with boldest assumption it claims to be the only safe exponent of truth1 and to be working in the interests of science2 changing science being accepted as more trustworthy than revelation4 ,it offers as final evidence for its assumptions1 what are represented to be the statements of deceased people4 ,less is made of the ,scriptures in this system3 yet here1 as might be expected1 there is violent opposition to the doctrine of ,regeneration4 ,it cannot possibly be denied that there is an intelligent response to the human appeal from the ,unseen2 and messages are being received and mysterious acts are being performed with increasing frequency4 ,it cannot1 however1 be proven that this response is from the spirit of the person named1 for a lying spirit could easily know enough of any person's life to represent him in every detail4 ,that the whole system could be of ,satan is evident1 and since it denies man's only hope of redemption1 it is no part of the real truth of ,god4 ,it1 too1 bears all the marks of the workings of ,satan4 ,another system of thought called ,new1 but which is as old as human philosophy1 appropriates every phase of metaphysical belief4 ,the central idea of the ,new ,thought is the complete development of man1--body1 soul1 and spirit4 ,every possible human power is utilized2 there is recognition of the ,creator2 the ,word of ,god is appropriated in convenient texts2 and ,christ is claimed by its followers to be the complete example and embodiment of all their ideals4 ,newly stated theories of psychology are included in this system1 and the whole teaching stands as the embodiment of all the ideals of the one who first suggested to humanity that they1 by their own efforts1 become as ,god4 ,the system wholly denies ,scriptural regeneration1 both as to its necessity and as a fact2 and is a veritable worship of self1 as predicted for the last days 7,,ii ,tim4 #c3b74 ,it substitutes the development of the will as a power for victory in the life1 in place of the ,god-provided victory over sin by the ,spirit4 ,its followers seem to be utterly blind to the plainest truths of the ,scriptures1 and are marvelling at what they suppose to be a discovery2 when1 perchance1 they are able to comprehend some secondary truth of the ,word of ,god4 ,this system1 like ,christian ,science1 numbers its followers by the hundreds of thousands4 ,they support many periodicals1 and their teachings are read and accepted throughout the world4 ,in all these doctrines there is included much of the precious truth of ,god1 but this is employed only as a bait to cover the relentless hook of ,satan1 by which he seeks to draw human souls away from ,god and into perdition4 ,not one positive word is said of the future state of man1 or of his fitness to meet his ,god1 and any belief in immortality is borrowed from the revelation of ,god2 for the systems themselves are given over to distracting and diverting man from the thought of his need of a ,divinely wrought preparation for eternity4 ,it is commonly stated by the followers of these systems that it is of little importance what one believes1 for it is the life that counts4 ,thus the great and necessary fact that any true character as well as any eternal blessedness depends upon what one believes1 rather than on the life1 is discredited4 ,these systems are mentioned only as examples of the almost innumerable doctrines that are sweeping the world to-day4 ,they often reappear under new and misleading titles4 ,the truth they acknowledge1 and many forces they employ1 are ,god's gracious provision for ,his saints2 yet when these truths and forces are used alone1 where the real purpose of ,god is skillfully omitted1 they become only the hypocrisy that covers and garnishes a lie4 ,again1 many are deluded by the emphasis upon the mere outward forms of the visible ,church4 ,when these forms are analyzed1 they appear to represent a church ministered to by a recognized ordained minister who depends upon his own personality for his power2 and who preaches ethics and morality drawn from ,scripture texts and other ethical writings4 ,prayers are offered1 imploring the ,almighty to aid humanity in its attempts to commend itself to ,him by a more or less faithful practice of religion4 ,the pleasures of music as an art are provided at fabulous cost1 in place of the praise that is inspired by the ,spirit of ,god4 ,social gatherings are held1 to take the place of the unity of the ,spirit and the love of the brethren4 ,humanitarian appeals for the betterment of the world are made1 in place of the evangelical regeneration by the ,cross2 and not one reference to the real ,gospel is made from one year to the next1 unless it be in a covered denial4 ,the sleeping congregations are seemingly satisfied with a mockery of the truth1 and are content with a doctrine that proposes to educate souls into hell1 and which encourages them to make a few efforts toward self-development while on their certain road to perdition4 ,it is no longer good form in society to be without some church relations1 yet the one and only true basis for salvation may never have been comprehended or accepted by a multitude of these members4 ,truly the god of this world is accomplishing his end1 and his blinded followers are coming to be numbered with the faithful4 ,the evil birds are flocking to the mustard tree1 and the corrupting leaven is permeating the measures of meal4 ,the last development of the earth history of the visible ,church is predicted to be a condition in which the ,church is saying1 ,i am rich1 and increased in goods1 and have need of nothing4 ,the passage continues1 and knowest not that thou art wretched1 and miserable1 and poor1 and blind1 and naked4 ,i counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire1 that thou mayest be rich2 and white raiment1 that thou mayest be clothed1 and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear2 and anoint thy eyes with eye salve1 that thou mayest see4 ,as many as ,i love1 ,i rebuke and chasten3 be zealous therefore1 and repent4 ,behold1 ,i stand at the door and knock3 if any man hear my voice1 and open the door1 ,i will come in to him1 and will sup with him1 and he with me 7,rev4 #c3ag-bj74 ,if ,scripture language and figure mean anything1 this is a description of an unregenerate ,church over which the ,lord is pleading4 ,it is from this ,church that ,he has withdrawn2 and is seen outside1 standing and knocking4 ,his hope is not centered upon reforming the whole mass of professing members2 for his offer is to the individual any man with whom ,he will then have personal communion and fellowship4 ,sad is the spectacle of these churches2 meeting week after week to be beguiled by the philosophy of men1 and raising no voice in protest against the denial of their only foundation as a church1 and of their only hope for time and eternity6 ,far more honorable were the infidels of the past generation than these ministers4 ,they were wholly outside the ,church4 ,but now1 behold the inconsistency6 ,men who are covered by the vesture of the ,church1 ministering its sacraments1 and supported by its benevolence1 are making an open attack upon that wisdom of ,god which made ,christ ,jesus the only ground for all righteousness1 sanctification1 and redemption4 ,the predictions for the last days are thus not only being fulfilled by false systems and doctrines1 but they are found in the visible ,church itself4 ,for the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine2 but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers1 having itching ears2 and they shall turn away their ears from the truth1 and shall be turned unto fables 7,,ii ,tim4 #d3c1 #d74 ,great religious activities are possible without coming into complications with saving faith4 ,it is possible to be more concerned over the untimely death of one hundred thousand drunkards than with the ,christ-less death of twenty million human beings2 or to be wholly concerned with the educational and physical needs of the heathen1 and to neglect their greatest need in regeneration4 ,thus ,satan may gain his own ends1 even through some so-called missionary undertakings1 for in this manner he can beguile untaught saints to limit their work to the lines of his highest ideals4 ,it is possible to fight against sin and not present the ,saviour2 or to urge the highest ,scriptural ideals and yet offer no reasonable way of attainment4 ,there is a strange fascination about these undertakings which are humanitarian1 and are religious only in form and title4 ,and there is a strange attraction in the leader who announces that he is not concerned with the doctrines of ,scripture1 because the helping of humanity is his one passion and care3 yet all his passion is lost and his care is to no real end unless coupled with a very positive message of a particular way of ,salvation1 the true understanding of which demands a series of most careful distinctions4 ,recently the word pragmatism has been brought into popular use to denote the test by which the pragmatists measure all systems1 theories and doctrines4 ,the pragmatic inquiry when applied to any system1 theory1 or doctrine may be understood to mean1 does it meet its claims in practice8 ,although much is being made of this phase of pragmatism1 the test is as old as the race1 and verified by ,scripture1 for ,jesus said1 ,by their fruits ye shall know them4 ,however1 the burden of testing claims has never before been so great1 for the world was never so filled with new and strange theories as now4 ,and these modern systems that deny true salvation in ,christ are growing mightily under this test4 ,they offer comparatively little and are usually able to meet their claims4 ,christian ,science does1 to some extent1 change the condition of mind and body4 ,spiritism offers a demonstration from the invisible1 and the demonstrations appear4 ,new ,thought proposes a development of the whole natural man1 and thrives by the practical test of pragmatism4 ,the same is true of all other similar systems and doctrines1 and will be true of those that may yet appear1 since it is the very program of ,satan as it is revealed in his last blasphemous counterfeit of the ,son of ,god2 for it is written in ,rev4 #ac3c1 #d that they first wondered at the miracles of the ,man of ,sin1 and then worshipped4 ,woe to the untaught soul who stands wondering to-day at the marvels of this evil age1 if he be without a sense of the importance and value of the priceless blood of the ,cross6 ,the step is not far1 for such an one1 to the place where he falls in worship3 worship of a being who is supposed to have forgotten abhorrence of sin and abandoned all eternal covenants of mercy by blood alone2 a being who is supposed to be glad that the world has outgrown the old unbearable estimates of sin and redemption1 and into whose presence the worshipper is supposed to be free to come on the ground of his fallen human nature1 or the universal fatherhood of ,god and the brotherhood of man4 ,who can be the god of these systems8 the energizing power in these people8 and the answerer of their prayers8 ,surely not the ,god of the ,scriptures1 who cannot deny himself1 and whose word cannot be made to pass away6 ,revelation sets forth but one other being who is capable of these undertakings2 and it not2 only assigns to this being a great and sufficient motive for all such activity1 but clearly predicts that he will thus oppose and exalt himself in this very day and age4 ,much of the secondary truth is the present inheritance of the child of ,god3 yet1 if there is a choice to be made1 the deepest wisdom will perceive that all the combined secondary values that ,satan can offer are but for a fleeting time2 and are not worthy to be compared with the eternal riches of grace in ,christ ,jesus4 ,chapter ,,xi4 ,the ,believer's ,present ,position4 ,since the ,bible contains ,god's message to the people of the ages1 it must be rightly divided if the body of truth concerning any particular age or people is to be clearly understood4 ,there are1 undoubtedly1 many things in common in the various ages1 and1 because of that fact1 the superficial use of the ,scriptures has been to treat the entire book as a direct message to all people of all time4 ,this method1 as has been stated1 has resulted in great confusion as to the ,divine program4 ,when that portion of ,scripture which directly applies to the present age has been discovered1 that1 too1 must be divided2 for the present time is a period of mixture among the people of the earth--the saints of ,god tenting among the citizens of the ,satanic system1 and having nothing in common with them beyond the ordinary things of this earth life4 ,again1 that particular body of truth which applies to the child of ,god in this age may be divided1 and a portion be called ,positional ,truth in that it unfolds the believer's present relation to the ,godhead1 the heavenlies1 and the present world2 while another may be known as ,life ,truth in that it is a particular statement of his present responsibility in conduct and service1 and also includes the provisions of ,god whereby he may fully accomplish the whole will of ,god4 ,a partial study of ,life ,truth is reserved for the next and last chapter2 while this chapter is to be devoted to the believer's present position and separation from the world4 ,the importance of ,positional ,truth is suggested by the fact that1 in the context of ,scripture1 it precedes the statement of ,life ,truth2 forming the basis of its appeal4 ,as an illustration of this it may be seen that the order of the doctrinal ,epistles is first1 to state a great ,positional ,truth1 which is then followed by an appeal for a life consistent with the truth revealed4 ,the first great section of the book of ,romans 7,chapters #a-h71 sets forth the fact of a great and full salvation2 this is followed 7omitting the dispensational parenthesis of ,chapters #i-aa7 by the closing section 7,chapters #ab-af71 which is a detailed description of the life a saved person should live1 and which opens with this appeal3 ,i beseech you therefore1 brethren1 by the mercies of ,god1 that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice1 holy1 acceptable unto ,god1 which is your reasonable service4 ,and be not conformed to this world3 but be ye transformed by the renewing of your minds1 that ye may prove what is that good1 and acceptable1 and perfect1 will of ,god4 ,so1 in the first section of the letter to the ,ephesians 7,chapters #a-c71 the believer's position is unfolded1 and this is followed by a section 7,chapters #d-f71 which is a series of injunctions for a heavenly walk2 this section opens as follows3 ,i therefore1 the prisoner of the ,lord1 beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called1 with all lowliness and meekness1 with long suffering1 forbearing one another in love2 endeavoring to keep the unity of the ,spirit in the bond of peace4 ,no appeal for faithfulness in the ,christian life will be found to be adequate or effective that does not follow this same order1 or that is not based upon some great revealed fact of the new life in ,christ4 ,it is probable that the present neglect and disregard for ,positional ,truth has1 in spite of moral exhortation1 borne its legitimate fruit in a time-serving worldly ,church4 ,it is a beautiful example of the harmony of the ,scriptures that1 while the evil of the present age is so-clearly described1 the true child of ,god is most carefully separated from its relationships1 and is seen to be in a position so independent of all the authority of the world1 that he can walk with the ,lord in unbroken communion and fellowship1 even while surrounded by this spiritual darkness4 ,and1 though the ,scriptural statements as to the ever increasing darkness of this age be rejected1 no meaning can be given to these passages that separate the believer from this world1 without the recognition of the black background of the failure and sinfulness of this age4 ,it is noticeable that the modern systems take no notice of the difference between the saved and the unsaved1 as they also make little of the future state4 ,this is in accordance with the fact that both of these truths are wholly dependent upon regeneration2 and that is the one truth these systems are originated by ,satan to resist4 ,the believer's position is set forth in at least seven positive revelations1 three of which concern his change from the darkness of ,satan to the light of ,god2 two concern his relationship to the heavenly sphere2 and two concern his relationship to the ,satanic order4 ,a careful study of these important passages will reveal the great reality of ,redemption4 ,the first ,divine movement for the salvation of an individual1 after the prayer of intercession by the ,spirit1 is illumination by the ,spirit4 ,this same work is also mentioned as the convicting or convincing of the ,spirit4 ,in this part of the ,divine undertaking1 the blinding by ,satan is temporarily removed and the soul beholds1 by ,divine vision1 the ,lord of glory and the way into eternal life through ,him3 but woe to the soul thus favored1 who repeatedly turns from that vision in rejection6 ,of such it is written3 ,for it is impossible for those who were once enlightened1 and have tasted of the heavenly gift1 and were made partakers of the ,holy ,ghost1 and have tasted the good word of ,god1 and the powers of the world to come1 if they shall fall away1 to renew them again unto repentance2 seeing they crucify to themselves the ,son of ,god afresh1 and put him to an open shame4 ,for the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it1 and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed1 receiveth blessings from ,god3 but that which beareth thorns and briars is rejected1 and is nigh unto cursing2 whose end is to be burned4 ,but1 beloved1 we are persuaded better things of you1 and things that accompany salvation1 though we thus speak 7,heb4 #f3d-i74 ,here there is pronounced a permanent return to the awful blindness of ,satan for the one who rejects the illumination of the ,spirit2 but there is also offered an ever-widening of vision and glory to the one who accepts the ,lord as ,he is revealed by the ,spirit1 for he then comes into possession of the things that accompany salvation4 ,this illuminating work of the ,spirit is mentioned by ,paul in his words to ,king ,agrippa1 wherein he describes his own commission to service4 ,he claimed to have been appointed by the ,lord who spoke to him from the ,glory4 ,he relates that by this commission he was sent to open their eyes1 and to turn them from darkness to light1 and from the power of ,satan unto ,god1 that they may receive forgiveness of sins1 and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me 7,acts #bf3ah74 ,this is the exact order of the ,divine movements in redemption2 the illumination of the ,spirit is placed before everything else4 ,there is probably no more neglected truth in modern evangelism than this preliminary work of the ,spirit3 yet it is the ,divine preparation for the intelligent action of the human will2 and if the right choice is made1 it unveils the eyes for all the coming ages4 ,this important illuminating work of the ,spirit is completely described in ,jno4 #af3h-aa as being a revelation of the judgment1 by the ,cross1 of all sin and condemnation2 the vision of the glorious righteous ,christ1 now in heaven2 and the realization of the sin of rejecting ,him4 ,the passage is here given3 ,nevertheless ,i tell you the truth2 it is expedient for you that ,i go away3 for if ,i go not away1 the ,comforter will not come unto you2 but if ,i depart1 ,i will send him unto you4 ,and when he is come1 he will convince the world of sin1 and of righteousness1 and of judgment3 of sin1 because they believe not on me2 of righteousness1 because ,i go to my ,father1 and ye see me no more2 of judgment1 because the prince of this world is judged4 ,the true child of ,god is1 then1 one in whom the ,spirit has wrought in lifting the blinding by ,satan and revealing to some extent1 even now1 the surpassing glory of ,christ4 ,sin1 too1 has become a terrible reality1 and the ,cross and the precious blood have become the basis of his confidence toward his ,god4 ,another revelation of the present position of the believer is that he has partaken of the ,divine nature through regeneration by the ,spirit4 ,this truth is stated in many passages1 a few of which are here given3 ,but as many as received him1 to them gave he power to become the sons of ,god1 even to them that believe on his name3 which were born1 not of blood1 nor of the will of the flesh1 nor of the will of man1 but of ,god 7,jno4 ,i3#ab1 #ac74 ,jesus answered1 ,verily1 verily1 ,i say unto thee1 except a man be born of water and of the ,spirit1 he cannot enter into the kingdom of ,god4 ,that which is born of the flesh is flesh2 and that which is born of the ,spirit is spirit4 ,marvel not that ,i said unto thee1 ,ye must be born again4 ,the wind bloweth where it listeth1 and thou hearest the sound thereof1 but canst not tell whence it cometh1 and whither it goeth3 so is every one that is born of the ,spirit 7,jno4 #c3e-h74 ,i am come that they might have life1 and that they might have it more abundantly 7,jno4 #aj3aj74 ,for in ,christ ,jesus neither circumcision availeth anything1 nor uncircumcision1 but a new creature 7,gal4 #f3ae74 ,not by works of righteousness which we have done1 but according to his mercy ,he saved us1 by the washing of regeneration1 and renewing of the ,holy ,ghost 7,titus #c3e74 ,therefore if any man be in ,christ1 he is a new creature3 old things have passed away2 behold1 all things have become new 7,,ii ,cor4 #e3ag74 ,whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises3 that by these ye might be partakers of the ,divine nature1 having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust 7,,ii ,pet4 #a3d74 ,the reality of this mighty transformation is in no way evident in present visible things1 but must be accepted by faith4 ,it is no less than a translation from the kingdom of ,satan into the kingdom of ,christ1 who hath delivered us from the power of darkness1 and translated us into the kingdom of his dear ,son 7,col4 #a3ac74 ,and by it one is said to be delivered from this present evil age3 ,who gave himself for our sins1 that ,he might deliver us from this present evil age1 according to the will of ,god and our ,father 7,gal4 #a3d71 and1 also1 according to the above passage1 to have escaped the corruption that is in the world 7,satanic system74 ,the new life that is thus imparted is none other than the very life of ,christ3 ,now if any man have not the ,spirit of ,christ1 he is none of his 7,rom4 #h3i74 ,to whom ,god would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the ,gentiles2 which is ,christ in you1 the hope of glory 7,col4 #a3bg74 ,i live2 yet not ,i1 but ,christ liveth in me 7,gal4 #b3bj74 ,examine yourselves1 whether ye be in the faith2 prove your own selves4 ,know ye not your own selves1 how that ,jesus ,christ is in you1 except ye be reprobates8 7,,ii ,cor4 #ac3e74 ,the third great fact of the believer's present position in separation from this world is that the ,holy ,spirit is given unto him1 at the moment of his regeneration1 to indwell him1 in place of the energizing power of ,satan who worketh with energy in the children of disobedience3 ,the love of ,god is shed abroad in our hearts by the ,holy ,spirit that is given unto us 7,rom4 #e3e74 ,now we have received not the spirit of the world1 but the ,spirit which is of ,god2 that we might know the things that are freely given to us of ,god 7,i ,cor4 #b3ab74 ,what8 know ye not that your body is the temple of the ,holy ,ghost which is in you1 which ye have of ,god1 and ye are not your own8 7,i ,cor4 #f3ai74 ,another phase of the believer's position is revealed in the fact that he is said to be a citizen of heaven2 his home center or citizenship having been moved there from the earth4 ,his name would1 therefore1 appear only among the celestial beings1 in any true census of the universe4 ,the reality of this unseen relationship is brought out in several passages3 ,for our citizenship is in heaven2 from whence also we wait for a ,saviour1 the ,lord ,jesus ,christ3 ,who shall fashion anew the body of our humiliation1 that it may be conformed to the body of ,his glory1 according to the working whereby ,he is able even to subject all things unto ,himself 7,phil4 #c3bj ,r4,v474 ,for ye know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved1 we have a building of ,god1 an house not made with hands1 eternal in the heavens4 ,for in this we groan1 earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven3 if so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked4 ,for we that are in this tabernacle do groan1 being burdened3 not for that we would be unclothed1 but clothed upon1 that mortality might be swallowed up of life4 ,now ,he that hath wrought us for the self-same thing is ,god1 ,who also hath given unto us the earnest of the ,spirit4 ,therefore we are always confident1 knowing that1 whilst we are at home in the body1 we are absent from the ,lord3 7,for we walk by faith1 not by sight37 we are confident1 ,i say1 and willing rather to be absent from the body1 and to be present with the ,lord 7,,ii ,cor4 #e3a-h74 ,again1 as to the believer's position in that which is termed in ,ephesians the heavenly places1--though the supplying of the word places is very misleading4 ,the meaning of the word heavenly here is not so much of locality as of experience3 as is indicated by the use of the same word in other passages where the believer is said to be heavenly in standing and relationship 7,heb4 #c3a2 ,eph4 #b3f4 ,see also ,matt4 #ah3ce2 ,jno4 #c3ab2 ,i ,cor4 #ae3dh74 ,dr4 ,c4 ,i4 ,scofield makes the following statement on this important phase of the believer's position3 ,the ,christian is 'heavenly' by calling 7,heb4 #c3a71 by citizenship 7,phil4 #c3bj71 by inheritance 7,i ,pet4 #a3d7 and by resurrection life 7,eph4 #b3f71 as a member of that body of which the ,head is actually in heaven4 ,the heavenly 7or 'in heavenly places1'7 therefore1 is the sphere of the believer's present association with ,christ4 ,this is shown by the constant context1 'in ,christ ,jesus4' ,the believer is now associated with ,christ in life 7,col4 #c3d2 ,i ,jno4 #e3aa1 #ab71 position 7,eph4 #b3f71 suffering 7,rom4 #h3ah2 ,,ii ,tim4 #b3aa1 #ab2 ,col4 #a3bd2 ,phil4 #a3bi72 service1 7,jno4 #ag3ah2 ,matt4 #bh3ah-bj71 and betrothal 7,,ii ,cor4 #aa3a-c74 ,the believer is to be associated with ,christ in ,glory 7,jno4 #ag3bb2 ,rom4 #h3ah2 ,col4 #c3d71 inheritance 7,rom4 #h3ag71 authority 7,matt4 #ai3bh2 ,rev4 #c3ba71 and marriage 7,eph4 #e3bb1 #cc2 ,rev4 #ai3a-i74 ,the believer's 'spiritual blessings' 7,eph4 #a3c71 therefore1 are to be possessed or experienced only as he lives in the sphere of his joint life1 joint position1 joint suffering1 joint service and joint marriage pledge with ,christ4 ,in so far as he lives as a natural man whose interests are earthly1 and avoids the path of co-service and 7if need be7 co-suffering1 he will know nothing experimentally of the exalted blessings of ,ephesians4 ',it is sufficient that the servant be as his ,master4' ,christ took account of ,himself as a heavenly ,being come down to earth to do ,his ,father's will4 7,scofield ,bible ,correspondence ,course1 ,book #b2 page #bhh47 ,thus it may be seen that the believer is not only a citizen of heaven1 but that he has also been brought into a position where many privileges of the heavenly experience are open to him4 ,in like manner1 the believer's position in relation to this world is not only a separation from the world by nature and purpose2 but he is also said to be a stranger and a pilgrim among the inhabitants of this dark age4 ,but ye are a chosen generation1 a royal priesthood1 an holy nation1 a peculiar people2 that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light3 which in times past were not a people1 but are now the people of ,god3 which had not obtained mercy1 but now have obtained mercy4 ,dearly beloved1 ,i beseech you as strangers and pilgrims1 abstain from fleshly lusts1 which war against the soul2 having your conversation honest among the ,gentiles 7,i ,pet4 #b3i-ab74 ,the same expression of strangers and pilgrims is used1 also1 in regard to the faith descendants of ,abraham3 these all died in faith1 not having received the promises1 but having seen them afar off1 and were persuaded of them1 and embraced them1 and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims upon the earth 7,heb4 #aa3ac74 ,this same wide difference between the people of this world and the people of ,god is also stated in passages where the world is understood to be the system over which ,satan now rules3 ,he that loveth his life shall lose it2 and he that hateth his life in this world 7,satanic system7 shall keep it unto life eternal 7,jno4 #ab3be74 ,ye adulterers and adulteresses1 know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with ,god8 ,whosoever therefore who will be a friend of the world 7,satanic system7 is the enemy of ,god 7,jas4 #d3d74 ,love not the world 7,satanic system71 neither the things that are in the world4 ,if any man love the world1 the love of the ,father is not in him4 ,for all that is in the world1 the lust of the flesh1 and the lust of the eyes1 and the pride of life1 is not of the ,father1 but is of the world4 ,and the world passeth away1 and the lust thereof3 but he that doeth the will of ,god abideth forever 7,i ,jno4 #b3ae-ag74 ,the word lust1 constantly used in description of the ,satanic system1 has a much larger meaning in the ,scripture than its present popular use1 where it refers only to that which is sensual4 ,in these passages quoted1 it refers to the whole ,satan-inspired ambition of humanity1 and includes their principle of self-help1 and their struggle for all that1 to them1 is highest and best4 ,it is unlawful1 in that it disregards the truth of ,god2 and it is related to that which is physical1 because it magnifies the finite being and its resources4 ,two other striking passages concerning the relation of the believer to the world are here given3 ,herein is our love made perfect1 that we may have boldness in the day of judgment3 because as he is1 so are we in this world 7,satanic system7 7,i ,jno4 #d3ag74 ,as thou hast sent me into the world 7,satanic system71 even so have ,i also sent them into the world 7,satanic system7 7,jno4 #ag3ah74 ,the last revelation of the believer's position to be mentioned here1 is in regard to his service for the world4 ,the unbounded love of ,god has called him into fellowship with ,christ in the great work of this age2 and in that connection he is under commission to evangelize1 by a process of witnessing1 to the uttermost parts of the world4 ,in this undertaking he is promised the immediate presence of ,christ1 to whom all power1 both in heaven and in earth1 has been given 7,matt4 #bh3ah-bj74 ,the language of the inspired ,book describes such witnesses as ,ambassadors for ,christ3 ,now then we are ambassadors for ,christ1 as though ,god did beseech you by us3 we pray you in ,christ's stead1 be ye reconciled to ,god 7,,ii ,cor4 #e3bj74 ,and the ambassador's message is also given in the next verse of the same passage3 ,for ,he hath made ,him to be sin for us1 who knew no sin2 that we might be made the righteousness of ,god in ,him 7we who knew no righteousness74 ,nowhere does the saint need more direct teaching of the ,spirit than in regard to the relatioin he sustains to this world4 ,in spite of the similarity of his earth life to that of the world's people1 he must reckon himself to be dead in ,christ and raised to newness of life4 ,expecting the world to misunderstand him and even to hate him1 he must wisely walk before them who are without4 ,he is called upon to use this world but not to abuse it2 and that which is of itself pure and good may become undesirable to him at times1 because its use would further the interests of ,satan4 ,some have taken the extreme position of assigning to ,satan the material universe and everything that is in the world to-day2 not recognizing the fact that no material or physical thing is evil of itself4 ,god created all things good4 ,satan has created nothing1 and his present relation to the world is only as a permitted usurper who appropriates and devastates the things of ,god in the interests of his own ambition4 ,he is the file-leader in a great and terrible rebellion against the government of ,god3 but the natural universe1 like all the powers of the human mind and will1 belongs primarily to ,god1 the ,creator2 and by title of inheritance1 they belong also1 to the child of ,god3 therefore let no man glory in men4 ,for all things are yours2 whether ,paul1 or ,apollos1 or ,cephas1 or the world1 or life1 or death1 or things present1 or things to come2 all are yours2 and ye are ,christ's2 and ,christ is ,god's 7,i ,cor4 #c3ba-bc74 ,yet1 since ,satan is making use of many good things to cover his evil purpose1 the child of ,god must1 for the present1 discern the hidden evil and1 in loyalty to his ,lord1 reject everything that may further the workings of ,satan4 ,the ,scripture is very clear on this point1 and discusses one issue as an example of all similar issues4 ,this discussion in ,scripture is of food which of itself is perfectly good1 but may be a means of great harm when associated with the purposes of evil4 ,the passages are as follows3 ,let us not therefore judge one another any more3 but judge this rather1 that no man put a stumbling block or an occasion to fall in his brother's way4 ,i know1 and am persuaded by the ,lord ,jesus1 that there is nothing unclean of itself3 but to him that esteemeth anything to be unclean1 to him it is unclean4 ,but if thy brother be grieved with thy meat1 now walkest thou not charitably4 ,destroy not him with thy meat1 for whom ,christ died4 ,let not then your good be evil spoken of3 for the kingdom of ,god is not meat and drink2 but righteousness1 and peace1 and joy in the ,holy ,ghost4 ,for he that in these things serveth ,christ is acceptable to ,god1 and approved of men4 ,let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace1 and things wherewith one may edify another4 ,for meat destroy not the work of ,god4 ,all things indeed are pure2 but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence4 ,it is good neither to eat flesh1 nor to drink wine1 nor anything whereby thy brother stumbleth1 or is offended1 or is made weak 7,rom4 #ad3 #ac-ba74 ,what say ,i then8 that the idol is anything1 or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is anything8 ,but ,i say1 that the things which the ,gentiles sacrifice1 they sacrifice to devils and not to ,god3 and ,i would not that ye should have fellowship with devils4 ,ye cannot drink the cup of the ,lord1 and the cup of devils3 ye cannot be partakers of the ,lord's table1 and of the table of devils4 ,do we provoke the ,lord to jealousy8 are we stronger than ,he8 ,all things are lawful for me1 but all things are not expedient3 all things are lawful for me1 but all things edify not4 ,let no man seek his own1 but every man another's wealth4 ,whatsoever is sold in the shambles1 that eat1 asking no question for conscience sake3 for the earth is the ,lord's1 and the fulness thereof4 ,if any of them that believe not bid you to a feast1 and ye be disposed to go2 whatsover is set before you1 eat1 asking no question for conscience sake4 ,but if any man say unto you1 ,this is offered in sacrifice unto idols1 eat not for his sake that shewed it1 and for conscience sake3 for the earth is the ,lord's and the fulness thereof3 conscience1 ,i say1 not thine own1 but of the other3 for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience8 ,for if ,i by grace be a partaker1 why am ,i evil spoken of for that for which ,i give thanks8 ,whether therefore ye eat1 or drink1 or whatsoever ye do1 do all to the glory of ,god4 ,give none offence1 neither to the ,jews1 nor to the ,gentiles1 nor to the church of ,god3 even as ,i please all men in all things1 not seeking mine own profit1 but the profit of many1 that they may be saved 7,i ,cor4 #aj3ai-cc74 ,the question becomes a practical one1 in view of the present progress in discovery1 science1 and psychology4 ,a theory must not be rejected because it is new or mysterious2 for the marvelous inventions of the age are often as useful in spreading the ,gospel as in furthering the interests of ,satan4 ,the newly acquired knowledge of the universe may be as valuable to the progress of good as to the advancement of evil4 ,there can be but one final test as to what shall be accepted and what shall be rejected1 and that must be made by the individual alone before ,god 7,rom4 #ad3bb74 ,in connection with any such question we may ask1 ,is the real work of redemption hindered1 or its true basis rejected8 ,is this a direct denial of the truth1 by which souls will be hindered1 or is it a counterfeit which may decoy them away from their only hope in the priceless blood of the ,cross8 ,beyond this1 a child of ,god may safely be all things to all men that he may save some4 ,the ,christian can see more of beauty in the world1 make larger use of its learning1 and more fully appreciate its good1 than can the children of this age3 yet he must now1 above all things else1 be content with his limited commission1 and be jealous of the interests of his ,lord and ,king4 ,much of his present perplexity would be relieved if he could but realize that he is temporarily tenting where an enemy rules1 and where he is the object of that enemy's fiery darts1 yet hedged about by the omnipotence of ,god2 called to bear the one message of redemption by the ,cross1 in the capacity and hidden dignity of an ambassador from the throne of the ,most ,high2 even now possessing a glory which shall soon be unveiled in the presence of his ,lord2 waiting that morning when his ,lord shall come again and receive him unto ,himself4 ,chapter ,,xii4 ,the ,believer's ,present ,victory4 ,an exalted position is usually accompanied with great responsibility4 ,this is certainly true1 according to ,scripture1 in the case of the believer in his heavenly position4 ,for when he is seen as a citizen of heaven1 and a partaker of those associations1 he is also required1 both by ,scripture and by reason1 to walk worthy of the calling wherewith he is called4 ,the statement of these heavenly demands upon the child of ,god forms a distinct body of truth1 and there are at least three such bodies of truth in ,scripture1 each appearing as a rule of conduct for some special people in some particular time4 ,the ,mosaic ,law was given primarily to ,god's ancient people through ,moses2 but it has a message still1 as it reflects the holiness of ,god and prepares for the salvation which is in ,christ4 ,so the ,sermon on the ,mount1 with the injunctions of ,john ,baptist1 and the early teachings of ,christ were given with the coming kingdom age in view and1 therefore1 form an important revelation in regard to that time when all shall know the ,lord from the least unto the greatest4 ,though there are some common principles running through all these separate teachings1 that ,scripture which applies directly to the people of this parenthetical age of the ,church will be found only in portions of the ,gospels and in the ,epistles of the ,new ,testament4 ,no appreciation of the provisions of ,god for a victorious life can be had until the demands which the believer's position imposes are realized4 ,these demands are in no way the standards of the world1 for the believer is not only a citizen of heaven in position1 but is called upon even now to fulfil all the standards of that sphere4 ,as an illustration of this fact1 a very few of these heavenly ideals and injunctions are given here3 ,i beseech you therefore1 brethren1 by the mercies of ,god1 that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice1 holy1 acceptable unto ,god1 which is your reasonable service 7,rom4 #ab3a74 ,rejoice evermore4 ,pray without ceasing4 ,in everything give thanks3 for this is the will of ,god in ,christ ,jesus concerning you4 ,abstain from all appearance of evil 7,i ,thes4 #e3af-ah1 #bb74 ,but the fruit of the ,spirit is love1 joy1 peace1 long suffering1 gentleness1 goodness1 faith1 meekness1 temperance3 against such there is no law 7,gal4 #e3bb1 #bc74 ,i therefore1 the prisoner of the ,lord1 beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called1 with all lowliness and meekness1 with long suffering1 forbearing one another in love2 endeavoring to keep the unity of the ,spirit in the bond of peace 7,eph4 #d3a-c74 ,and grieve not the ,holy ,spirit of ,god1 whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption 7,eph4 #d3cj74 ,wherefore be ye not unwise1 but understanding what the will of the ,lord is4 ,and be not drunk with wine1 wherein is excess2 but be filled with the ,spirit2 speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs1 singing and making melody in your heart to the ,lord2 giving thanks always for all things unto ,god and the ,father in the name of our ,lord ,jesus ,christ 7,eph4 #e3ag-bj74 ,wherefore take unto you the whole armor of ,god1 that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day1 and having done all1 to stand 7,eph4 #f3ac74 ,if ye then be risen with ,christ1 seek those things which are above1 where ,christ sitteth on the right hand of ,god4 ,set your affections on things above1 not on things on the earth 7,col4 #c3a1 #b74 ,these requirements are evidently heavenly in character1 and demand nothing less than that which is becoming to that sphere4 ,they are1 therefore1 beyond human strength2 for what human power is able to give thanks always for all things8 ,or to avoid grieving the ,holy ,spirit8 ,who can be filled with the ,spirit1 or rejoice in tribulation8 ,in fact1 these demands are often treated as impractical ideals1 rather than present requirements2 while in reality they are binding on every child of ,god4 ,to fail in them at any point1 will not unsave one 7,ps4 #acj3c2 ,rom4 #d3e72 but that failure will profane the heavenly citizenship1 dishonor ,god in whose grace he is standing 7,rom4 #e3b71 and give the enemy occasion to accuse the brethren before ,god2 for ,satan judges the ,christian on the basis of the heavenly ideals rather than the standards of earth4 ,no one can contemplate these impossible responsibilities without a sense of utter helplessness and insufficiency4 ,again1 the believer must not only meet the impossible demands of a heavenly position1 but he is called upon to face a world-ruling foe1 who1 with all his kingdom and power1 is seeking to break and mar that life into which the ,divine nature has been received4 ,the revelation that ,satan is going about as a roaring lion1 seeking whom he may devour1 presents a truth that should disarm the believer of all self-confidence and cause him to dread1 above all things else1 the subtle devices of this foe4 ,in this connection ,eph4 #f3aj-ab may well be restated3 ,finally1 be strong in the ,lord1 and in the strength of ,his might4 ,put on the whole armor of ,god1 that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil4 ,for our wrestling is not against flesh and blood1 but against the principalities1 against the powers1 against the world rulers of this darkness1 against the spiritual host of wickedness in the heavenlies4 ,in view of this opposition of ,satan1 it is still more evident that the requirements of the ,christian life are beyond any human power4 ,so1 also1 there is a fallen human nature within the child of ,god1 which is prone to dishonor ,god1 and is itself beyond the control of the human will4 ,this important and much misunderstood truth is taken up at length in ,rom4 #g3ad-be3 ,for we know that the law is spiritual3 but ,i am carnal1 sold under sin4 ,for that which ,i do ,i allow not3 for what ,i would1 that do ,i not2 but what ,i hate1 that do ,i4 ,if then ,i do that which ,i would not1 ,i consent unto the law that it is good4 ,now then it is no more ,i that do it1 but sin that dwelleth in me4 ,for ,i know that in me 7that is1 in my flesh71 dwelleth no good thing3 for to will is present with me2 but how to perform that which is good ,i find not4 ,for the good that ,i would ,i do not3 but the evil which ,i would not1 that ,i do4 ,now if ,i do that ,i would not1 it is no more ,i that do it1 but sin that dwelleth in me4 ,i find then a law1 that1 when ,i would do good1 evil is present with me4 ,for ,i delight in the law of ,god after the inward man3 but ,i see another law in my members1 warring against the law of my mind1 and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members4 ,o wretched man that ,i am6 who shall deliver me from the body of this death8 ,i thank ,god through ,jesus ,christ our ,lord4 ,so then with the mind ,i myself serve the law of ,god2 but with the flesh the law of sin4 ,this battle between the old nature and the new is1 then1 never gained for ,god by human power or by religious exercise3 but through ,christ alone4 ,thus the believer is confronted with a threefold impossibility as he contemplates his heavenly responsibility4 ,first3 ,the heavenly position demands a manner of life that is beyond any human possibility4 ,second3 ,the enemy is stronger than he1 and can thwart every resolution4 ,third3 ,his own fallen nature entices him to do positive evil when he would do good4 ,notwithstanding this threefold impossibility1 there is a clear call to a victorious life1 wherein every thought is brought into captivity to the obedience of ,jesus ,christ 7,,ii ,cor4 #aj3e71 and if he fails by one degree1 he will dishonor the ,god who has called him4 ,where1 then1 is the relief from this dilemma8 ,it is found only in the power of ,god4 ,he has provided a complete salvation from the dominion and power of evil1 which is a real victory--the only victory for the believer in this present life and conflict4 ,it is a second form or tense of salvation1 for it is possible to be saved from the condemnation and penalty of sin1 and still for a time to be under its dominion and power4 ,salvation from the power of the world1 the flesh1 and the devil1 may be secured as freely and completely as the salvation from the penalty of sin1 and on the same terms2 yet its terms and conditions are so unlike the methods of the world that often it seems unreal1 even to ,christians4 ,no instructed person expects to be free from condemnation1 or justified before ,god1 by virtue of his moral character2 nor can there be freedom from the power of sin by virtue of the resolutions of the human will4 ,though the ,christian life is impossible to human strength1 it is within the power of ,god2 and ,he offers to supply all that ,he requires1 even to a completely victorious life4 ,since it is necessarily a ,divine undertaking1 the human part can be no more than an attitude of expectation or faith toward ,god1--an attitude which reckons self to be helpless1 and ,god alone to be sufficient4 ,it is a perpetual realization of the principle of faith and1 therefore1 at every point1 contradicts ,satan's principle of self-help4 ,here1 as in every human effort to be ,god-like1 ,satan's ideals and methods are so thrust upon the world that the natural dependence of the creature upon the ,creator is made to seem a weak and unreasonable thing4 ,this worldly mind has found a place in the ,church and to a large extent1 in spite of the teachings of ,scripture2 and it is often as difficult to inspire true expectation toward ,god in the ,christian mind in the matter of daily victory1 as it is to move the self-righteous and self-sufficient sinner to believe on ,christ for regeneration4 ,true dependence upon the sufficiency of ,god is thus born of a vision of the utter inability of the natural man to meet the demands of the heavenly citizenship4 ,the world citizen may wrestle against flesh and blood to realize his moral ideals3 but he has no heavenly standards to fulfill2 no mighty foe to face2 and no conflict of natures4 ,therefore1 his low ideals may often be reached by virtue of his own resolution and will4 ,especially will this method be adequate for the unregenerate1 as the energizing power of ,satan is working in him to cause him both to will and to do the purpose of ,satan 7,eph4 #b3b73 but the faith principle is the only possible way to victory for the child of ,god2 and it must be faith alone4 ,as the soul may be eternally lost1 while calling upon ,god to help him save himself3 so the saint who only seeks the assistance of ,god in the exercise of his own power toward a correct manner of life1 may be a dishonor to ,god constantly4 ,the principles of faith and of works can no more be mixed in the one case than in the other4 ,they both present human impossibilities and1 therefore1 demand the power of ,god4 ,the ,scriptures are clear on this point1 both in precept and example3 ,first3 ,the power of ,god is the believer's sufficiency in meeting the heavenly demands3 ,for it is ,god which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure 7,phil4 #b3ac74 ,not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything as of ourselves3 but our sufficiency is of ,god 7,,ii ,cor4 #c3e74 ,but by the grace of ,god ,i am what ,i am3 and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain2 but ,i labored more abundantly than they all3 yet not ,i1 but the grace of ,god which was with me 7,i ,cor4 #ae3aj74 ,are ye so foolish8 having begun in the ,spirit1 are ye now made perfect by the flesh8 7,gal4 #c3c74 ,finally my brethren1 be strong in the ,lord1 and in the power of his might 7,eph4 #f3aj74 ,the latter passage is but the natural culmination of the whole revelation of the believer's citizenship and its responsibilities4 ,therefore1 the final counsel is to be strong in the ,lord and in the power of ,his might4 ,second3 ,the conflict with the enemy can be a victory only by the power of ,god4 ,a remarkable revelation is given in the ,scriptures of the attitude of the angels toward ,satan1 and this attitude can well be considered by fallen man4 ,in ,jude #i1 ,michael1 the archangel1 is seen in controversy with ,satan over the body of ,moses4 ,there is no revelation as to the time or the occasion of this controversy4 ,it is stated that ,moses was buried in secret and was later seen in his transfigured and glorified body1 so that it is possible that the removal of the body of ,moses from the domain of ,satan was the occasion here referred to4 ,the passage is as follows3 ,but ,michael1 the archangel1 when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of ,moses1 durst not bring against him a railing accusation1 but said1 ,the ,lord rebuke thee4 ,in like manner in ,,ii ,pet4 #b3aj1 the false teachers of the end of this age are said to disregard the heavenly powers 7evidently evil7 which angels dare not do4 ,but chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness1 and despise dominion4 ,presumptuous are they1 self willed1 they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities4 ,whereas angels1 which are greater in power and might1 bring not railing accusation against them before the ,lord4 ,there is probably a just regard1 on the part of the angelic beings1 for the fact that ,satan is the anointed of ,god 7,ezek4 #bh3ad74 ,as ,david would not lift up his hand against ,saul because he was the ,lord's anointed 7,i ,sam4 #bd3f74 ,christ is said to be anointed 7,ps4 #b3b72 so also is the believer 7,i ,jno4 #b3bg74 ,but it is also shown here that the superior wisdom and strength of even ,michael1 the archangel1 and all other celestial beings1 is never lifted in conflict with ,satan4 ,they rely only upon the same power that is promised the believer1 and well may the believer be instructed by their example4 ,there are two passages where the child of ,god is directed to resist the devil4 ,the context1 however1 in both passages warns him that it must be in utter dependence upon the power of ,god4 ,he must be wholly submitted to ,god and it must be done through a steadfastness of faith4 ,the passages are as follows3 ,submit yourselves therefore to ,god4 ,resist the devil1 and he will flee from you 7,jas4 #d3g74 ,be sober1 be vigilant2 because your adversary the devil1 as a roaring lion1 walketh about1 seeking whom he may devour3 whom resist steadfast in the faith 7,i ,pet4 #e3h1 #i74 ,and the faith principle is mentioned among the believer's armor in ,eph4 #f3af as the shield of faith by which all the fiery darts of the enemy are to be quenched4 ,third3 ,true character may be realized by the power of ,god1 in spite of the tendency of the fallen nature4 ,this character1 however1 is that which is directly promised by the power of ,god3 ,but the fruit of the ,spirit is love1 joy1 peace1 long suffering1 gentleness1 goodness1 faith1 meekness1 self control 7,gal4 #e3bb1 #bc74 ,for the fruit of the ,spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth 7,eph4 #e3i74 ,ye are of ,god1 little children1 and have overcome them3 because greater is he that is in you1 than he that is in the world 7,i ,jno4 #d3d74 ,thus the true ,god-honoring character is seen to be the result of the power of ,god1 and it is only possible to the one who has ceased from his own labors and has entered into rest4 ,this is the victory that overcomes the world1 even our faith 7,i ,jno4 #e3d74 ,this victory demands a constant exercise of faith4 ,faith is never finished here1 and any true progress in the ,christian life is from faith to faith1 and it is also said of the one whom ,god has constituted just1 that he shall live by faith4 ,the same objection is often raised against the application of the faith principle as a means to the consummation of a victorious life1 as is raised against the same principle for regeneration4 ,in this objection it is inferred that when this method is adopted1 there is no adequate incentive or motive left for the individual4 ,such objections arise from a misunderstanding of this truth4 ,it is useless to undertake the impossible in any case2 and in the matter of salvation from the penalty of sin1 the only work which it is possible for ,god to accept as the ground of redemption is that which is already undertaken and fully completed by ,christ on the ,cross4 ,by this finished work the believer is provided with a perfect standing before ,god1 and is raised to the exalted position of an ambassador for ,christ4 ,that privilege of service does not affect the grounds of his salvation1 but opens to him the glorious possibility of rewards 7,i ,cor4 #c3i-ae74 ,in the matter of salvation from the power of sin1 the human will may be employed as an instrument through which the power of ,god may be manifested4 ,the following passages reveal how directly ,he proposes to be the real power in the believer's life3 ,for it is ,god which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure 7,phil4 #b3ac74 ,for though we walk in the flesh1 we do not war after the flesh3 for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal1 but mighty through ,god to the pulling down of strongholds2 casting down imaginations1 and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of ,god1 and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of ,christ 7,,ii ,cor4 #aj3c-e74 ,i can do all things through ,christ which strengthened me 7,phil #d3ac74 ,for apart from me ye can do nothing 7,jno4 #ae3e74 ,it is assumed that the believer has recognized the perfectness of the will of ,god and has thrown his whole being open to ,his power and guidance4 ,as a little child may avail himself of the wisdom and experience of his parents through obedience1 so the believer has become willing to do whatever the infinite wisdom and love of ,god may choose for him4 ,when thus committed to the will of ,god1 and in true faith depending on ,him1 the mighty power of the ,spirit will work in him and through him to the glory of ,god4 ,this ,i say then1 ,walk in the ,spirit1 and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh 7,gal4 #e3af74 ,for the law of the ,spirit of life in ,christ ,jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death 7,rom4 #h3b74 ,salvation in any form is1 therefore1 not of works1 lest any man should boast4 ,it remains to be seen1 in view of the perilous position of the believer in the enemy's land1 that ,god has not only provided every needed force for conquest and victory1 but has given positive promises for the security of the one ,he has received on the ground of the shed blood of ,christ1 ,hast not thou made an hedge about him1 and about his house1 and about all that he hath on every side8 7,job #a3aj74 ,my ,father1 which gave them me1 is greater than all2 and no man 7nothing71 is able to pluck them out of my ,father's hand 7,jno4 #aj3bi74 ,there hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man3 but ,god is faithful1 who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able2 but will with the temptation also make a way to escape1 that ye may be able to bear it 7,i ,cor4 #aj3ac74 ,who shall lay anything to the charge of ,god's elect8 ,it is ,god that justifieth4 ,who is he that condemneth8 ,it is ,christ that died1 yea1 rather that is risen again1 who is even at the right hand of ,god1 who also maketh intercession for us4 ,who shall separate us from the love of ,christ8 ,shall tribulation1 or distress1 or persecution1 or famine1 or nakedness1 or peril1 or sword8 ,as it is written1 ,for ,thy sake we are killed all the day long2 we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter4 ,nay1 in all these things we are more than conquerors through ,him that loved us4 ,for ,i am persuaded1 that neither death1 nor life1 nor angels1 nor principalities1 nor powers1 nor things present1 nor things to come1 nor height1 nor depth1 nor any other creature1 shall be able to separate us from the love of ,god1 which is in ,christ ,jesus our ,lord4
