,how would you define ,christian ,science8 ,as the law of ,god1 the law of good1 interpreting and demonstrating the divine ,principle and rule of universal harmony4 ,what is the ,principle of ,christian ,science8 ,it is ,god1 the ,supreme ,being1 infinite and immortal ,mind1 the ,soul of man and the universe4 ,it is our ,father which is in heaven4 ,it is substance1 ,spirit1 ,life1 ,truth1 and ,love1--these are the deific ,principle4 ,do you mean by this that ,god is a person8 ,the word person affords a large margin for misapprehension1 as well as definition4 ,in ,french the equivalent word is personne4 ,in ,spanish1 ,italian1 and ,latin1 it is persona4 ,the ,latin verb personare is compounded of the prefix per 7through7 and sonare 7to sound74 ,in law1 ,blackstone applies the word personal to bodily presence1 in distinction from one's appearance 7in court1 for example7 by deputy or proxy4 ,other definitions of person1 as given by ,webster1 are a living soul2 a self-conscious being2 a moral agent2 especially1 a living human being1 a corporeal man1 woman1 or child2 an individual of the human race4 ,he adds1 that among ,trinitarian ,christians the word stands for one of the three subjects1 or agents1 constituting the ,godhead4 ,in ,christian ,science we learn that ,god is definitely individual1 and not a person1 as that word is used by the best authorities1 if our lexicographers are right in defining person as especially a finite human being2 but ,god is personal1 if by person is meant infinite ,spirit4 ,we do not conceive rightly of ,god1 if we think of ,him as less than infinite4 ,the human person is finite2 and therefore ,i prefer to retain the proper sense of ,deity by using the phrase an individual ,god1 rather than a personal ,god2 for there is and can be but one infinite individual ,spirit1 whom mortals have named ,god4 ,science defines the individuality of ,god as supreme good1 ,life1 ,truth1 ,love4 ,this term enlarges our sense of ,deity1 takes away the trammels assigned to ,god by finite thought1 and introduces us to higher definitions4 ,is healing the sick the whole of ,science8 ,healing physical sickness is the smallest part of ,christian ,science4 ,it is only the bugle-call to thought and action1 in the higher range of infinite goodness4 ,the emphatic purpose of ,christian ,science is the healing of sin2 and this task1 sometimes1 may be harder than the cure of disease2 because1 while mortals love to sin1 they do not love to be sick4 ,hence their comparative acquiescence in your endeavors to heal them of bodily ills1 and their obstinate resistance to all efforts to save them from sin through ,christ1 spiritual ,truth and ,love1 which redeem them1 and become their ,saviour1 through the flesh1 from the flesh1--the material world and evil4 ,this ,life1 ,truth1 and ,love--this trinity of good--was individualized1 to the perception of mortal sense1 in the man ,jesus4 ,his history is emphatic in our hearts1 and it lives more because of his spiritual than his physical healing4 ,his example is1 to ,christian ,scientists1 what the models of the masters in music and painting are to artists4 ,genuine ,christian ,scientists will no more deviate morally from that divine digest of ,science called the ,sermon on the ,mount1 than they will manipulate invalids1 prescribe drugs1 or deny ,god4 ,jesus' healing was spiritual in its nature1 method1 and design4 ,he wrought the cure of disease through the divine ,mind1 which gives all true volition1 impulse1 and action2 and destroys the mental error made manifest physically1 and establishes the opposite manifestation of ,truth upon the body in harmony and health4 ,by the individuality of ,god1 do you mean that ,god has a finite form8 ,no4 ,i mean the infinite and divine ,principle of all being1 the ever-present ,i ,,am1 filling all space1 including in itself all ,mind1 the one ,father-,mother ,god4 ,life1 ,truth1 and ,love are this trinity in unity1 and their universe is spiritual1 peopled with perfect beings1 harmonious and eternal1 of which our material universe and men are the counterfeits4 ,is ,god the ,principle of all science1 or only of ,divine or ,christian ,science8 ,science is ,mind manifested4 ,it is not material2 neither is it of human origin4 ,all true ,science represents a moral and spiritual force1 which holds the earth in its orbit4 ,this force is ,spirit1 that can bind the sweet influences of the ,pleiades1 and loose the bands of ,orion4 ,there is no material science1 if by that term you mean material intelligence4 ,god is infinite ,mind1 hence there is no other ,mind4 ,good is ,mind1 but evil is not ,mind4 ,good is not in evil1 but in ,god only4 ,spirit is not in matter1 but in ,spirit only4 ,law is not in matter1 but in ,mind only4 ,is there no matter8 ,all is ,mind4 ,according to the ,scriptures and ,christian ,science1 all is ,god1 and there is naught beside ,him4 ,god is ,spirit2 and we can only learn and love ,him through ,his spirit1 which brings out the fruits of ,spirit and extinguishes forever the works of darkness by ,his marvellous light4 ,the five material senses testify to the existence of matter4 ,the spiritual senses afford no such evidence1 but deny the testimony of the material senses4 ,which testimony is correct8 ,the ,bible says3 ,let ,god be true1 and every man a liar4 ,if1 as the ,scriptures imply1 ,god is ,all-in-all1 then all must be ,mind1 since ,god is ,mind4 ,therefore in divine ,science there is no material mortal man1 for man is spiritual and eternal1 he being made in the image of ,spirit1 or ,god4 ,there is no material sense4 ,matter is inert1 inanimate1 and sensationless1--considered apart from ,mind4 ,lives there a man who has ever found ,soul in the body or in matter1 who has ever seen spiritual substance with the eye1 who has found sight in matter1 hearing in the material ear1 or intelligence in non-intelligence8 ,if there is any such thing as matter1 it must be either mind which is called matter1 or matter without ,mind4 ,matter without ,mind is a moral impossibility4 ,mind in matter is pantheism4 ,soul is the only real consciousness which cognizes being4 ,the body does not see1 hear1 smell1 or taste4 ,human belief says that it does2 but destroy this belief of seeing with the eye1 and we could not see materially2 and so it is with each of the physical senses4 ,accepting the verdict of these material senses1 we should believe man and the universe to be the football of chance and sinking into oblivion4 ,destroy the five senses as organized matter1 and you must either become non-existent1 or exist in ,mind only2 and this latter conclusion is the simple solution of the problem of being1 and leads to the equal inference that there is no matter4 ,the sweet sounds and glories of earth and sky1 assuming manifold forms and colors1--are they not tangible and material8 ,as ,mind they are real1 but not as matter4 ,all beauty and goodness are in and of ,mind1 emanating from ,god2 but when we change the nature of beauty and goodness from ,mind to matter1 the beauty is marred1 through a false conception1 and1 to the material senses1 evil takes the place of good4 ,has not the truth in ,christian ,science met a response from ,prof4 ,s4,p4 ,langley1 the young ,american astronomer8 ,he says that color is in us1 not in the rose2 and he adds that this is not any metaphysical subtlety1 but a fact almost universally accepted1 within the last few years1 by physicists4 ,is not the basis of ,mind-healing a destruction of the evidence of the material senses1 and restoration of the true evidence of spiritual sense8 ,it is1 so far as you perceive and understand this predicate and postulate of ,mind-healing2 but the ,science of ,mind-healing is best understood in practical demonstration4 ,the proof of what you apprehend1 in the simplest definite and absolute form of healing1 can alone answer this question of how much you understand of ,christian ,science ,mind-healing4 ,not that all healing is ,science1 by any means2 but that the simplest case1 healed in ,science1 is as demonstrably scientific1 in a small degree1 as the most difficult case so treated4 ,the infinite and subtler conceptions and consistencies of ,christian ,science are set forth in my work ,science and ,health4 ,is man material or spiritual8 ,in ,science1 man is the manifest reflection of ,god1 perfect and immortal ,mind4 ,he is the likeness of ,god2 and ,his likeness would be lost if inverted or perverted4 ,according to the evidence of the so-called physical senses1 man is material1 fallen1 sick1 depraved1 mortal4 ,science and spiritual sense contradict this1 and they afford the only true evidence of the being of ,god and man1 the material evidence being wholly false4 ,jesus said of personal evil1 that the truth abode not in him1 because there is no material sense4 ,matter1 as matter1 has neither sensation nor personal intelligence4 ,as a pretension to be ,mind1 matter is a lie1 and the father of lies2 ,mind is not in matter1 and ,spirit cannot originate its opposite1 named matter4 ,according to divine ,science1 ,spirit no more changes its species1 by evolving matter from ,spirit1 than natural science1 so-called1 or material laws1 bring about alteration of species by transforming minerals into vegetables or plants into animals1--thus confusing and confounding the three great kingdoms4 ,no rock brings forth an apple2 no pine-tree produces a mammal or provides breast-milk for babes4 ,to sense1 the lion of to-day is the lion of six thousand years ago2 but in ,science1 ,spirit sends forth its own harmless likeness4 ,how should ,i undertake to demonstrate ,christian ,science in healing the sick8 ,as ,i have given you only an epitome of the ,principle1 so ,i can give you here nothing but an outline of the practice4 ,be honest1 be true to thyself1 and true to others2 then it follows thou wilt be strong in ,god1 the eternal good4 ,heal through ,truth and ,love2 there is no other healer4 ,in all moral revolutions1 from a lower to a higher condition of thought and action1 ,truth is in the minority and error has the majority4 ,it is not otherwise in the field of ,mind-healing4 ,the man who calls himself a ,christian ,scientist1 yet is false to ,god and man1 is also uttering falsehood about good4 ,this falsity shuts against him the ,truth and the ,principle of ,science1 but opens a way whereby1 through will-power1 sense may say the unchristian practitioner can heal2 but ,science shows that he makes morally worse the invalid whom he is supposed to cure4 ,by this ,i mean that mortal mind should not be falsely impregnated4 ,if by such lower means the health is seemingly restored1 the restoration is not lasting1 and the patient is liable to a relapse1--,the last state of that man is worse than the first4 ,the teacher of ,mind-healing who is not a ,christian1 in the highest sense1 is constantly sowing the seeds of discord and disease4 ,even the truth he speaks is more or less blended with error2 and this error will spring up in the mind of his pupil4 ,the pupil's imperfect knowledge will lead to weakness in practice1 and he will be a poor practitioner1 if not a malpractitioner4 ,the basis of malpractice is in erring human will1 and this will is an outcome of what ,i call mortal mind1--a false and temporal sense of ,truth1 ,life1 and ,love4 ,to heal1 in ,christian ,science1 is to base your practice on immortal ,mind1 the divine ,principle of man's being2 and this requires a preparation of the heart and an answer of the lips from the ,lord4 ,the ,science of healing is the ,truth of healing4 ,if one is untruthful1 his mental state weighs against his healing power2 and similar effects come from pride1 envy1 lust1 and all fleshly vices4 ,the spiritual power of a scientific1 right thought1 without a direct effort1 an audible or even a mental argument1 has oftentimes healed inveterate diseases4 ,the thoughts of the practitioner should be imbued with a clear conviction of the omnipotence and omnipresence of ,god2 that ,he is ,all1 and that there can be none beside ,him2 that ,god is good1 and the producer only of good2 and hence1 that whatever militates against health1 harmony1 or holiness1 is an unjust usurper of the throne of the controller of all mankind4 ,note this1 that if you have power in error1 you forfeit the power that ,truth bestows1 and its salutary influence on yourself and others4 ,you must feel and know that ,god alone governs man2 that ,his government is harmonious2 that ,he is too pure to behold iniquity1 and divides ,his power with nothing evil or material2 that material laws are only human beliefs1 which govern mortals wrongfully4 ,these beliefs arise from the subjective states of thought1 producing the beliefs of a mortal material universe1--so-called1 and of material disease and mortality4 ,mortal ills are but errors of thought1--diseases of mortal mind1 and not of matter2 for matter cannot feel1 see1 or report pain or disease4 ,disease is a thing of thought manifested on the body2 and fear is the procurator of the thought which causes sickness and suffering4 ,remove this fear by the true sense that ,god is ,love1--and that ,love punishes nothing but sin1--and the patient can then look up to the loving ,god1 and know that ,he afflicteth not willingly the children of men1 who are punished because of disobedience to ,his spiritual law4 ,his law of ,truth1 when obeyed1 removes every erroneous physical and mental state4 ,the belief that matter can master ,mind1 and make you ill1 is an error which ,truth will destroy4 ,you must learn to acknowledge ,god in all ,his ways4 ,it is only a lack of understanding of the allness of ,god1 which leads you to believe in the existence of matter1 or that matter can frame its own conditions1 contrary to the law of ,spirit4 ,sickness is the schoolmaster1 leading you to ,christ2 first to faith in ,christ2 next to belief in ,god as omnipotent2 and finally to the understanding of ,god and man in ,christian ,science1 whereby you learn that ,god is good1 and in ,science man is ,his likeness1 the forever reflection of goodness4 ,therefore good is one and ,all4 ,this brings forward the next proposition in ,christian ,science1--namely1 that there are no sickness1 sin1 and death in the divine ,mind4 ,what seem to be disease1 vice1 and mortality are illusions of the physical senses4 ,these illusions are not real1 but unreal4 ,health is the consciousness of the unreality of pain and disease2 or1 rather1 the absolute consciousness of harmony and of nothing else4 ,in a moment you may awake from a night-dream2 just so you can awake from the dream of sickness2 but the demonstration of the ,science of ,mind-healing by no means rests on the strength of human belief4 ,this demonstration is based on a true understanding of ,god and divine ,science1 which takes away every human belief1 and1 through the illumination of spiritual understanding1 reveals the all-power and ever-presence of good1 whence emanate health1 harmony1 and ,life eternal4 ,the lecturer1 teacher1 or healer who is indeed a ,christian ,scientist1 never introduces the subject of human anatomy2 never depicts the muscular1 vascular1 or nervous operations of the human frame4 ,he never talks about the structure of the material body4 ,he never lays his hands on the patient1 nor manipulates the parts of the body supposed to be ailing4 ,above all1 he keeps unbroken the ,ten ,commandments1 and practises ,christ's ,sermon on the ,mount4 ,wrong thoughts and methods strengthen the sense of disease1 instead of cure it2 or else quiet the fear of the sick on false grounds1 encouraging them in the belief of error until they hold stronger than before the belief that they are first made sick by matter1 and then restored through its agency4 ,this fosters infidelity1 and is mental quackery1 that denies the ,principle of ,mind-healing4 ,if the sick are aided in this mistaken fashion1 their ailments will return1 and be more stubborn because the relief is unchristian and unscientific4 ,christian ,science erases from the minds of invalids their mistaken belief that they live in or because of matter1 or that a so-called material organism controls the health or existence of mankind1 and induces rest in ,god1 divine ,love1 as caring for all the conditions requisite for the well-being of man4 ,as power divine is the healer1 why should mortals concern themselves with the chemistry of food8 ,jesus said3 ,take no thought what ye shall eat4 ,the practitioner should also endeavor to free the minds of the healthy from any sense of subordination to their bodies1 and teach them that the divine ,mind1 not material law1 maintains human health and life4 ,a ,christian ,scientist knows that1 in ,science1 disease is unreal2 that ,mind is not in matter2 that ,life is ,god1 good2 hence ,life is not functional1 and is neither matter nor mortal mind2 knows that pantheism and theosophy are not ,science4 ,whatever saps1 with human belief1 this basis of ,christian ,science1 renders it impossible to demonstrate the ,principle of this ,science1 even in the smallest degree4 ,a mortal and material body is not the actual individuality of man made in the divine and spiritual image of ,god4 ,the material body is not the likeness of ,spirit2 hence it is not the truth of being1 but the likeness of error--the human belief which saith there is more than one ,god1--there is more than one ,life and one ,mind4 ,in ,deuteronomy 7iv4 #ce7 we read3 ,the ,lord1 ,he is ,god2 there is none else beside ,him4 ,in ,john 7iv4 #bd7 we may read3 ,god is ,spirit4 ,these propositions1 understood in their ,science1 elucidate my meaning4 ,when treating a patient1 it is not ,science to treat every organ in the body4 ,to aver that harmony is the real and discord is the unreal1 and then give special attention to what according to their own belief is diseased1 is scientific2 and if the healer realizes the truth1 it will free his patient4 ,what are the means and methods of trustworthy ,christian ,scientists8 ,these people should not be expected1 more than others1 to give all their time to ,christian ,science work1 receiving no wages in return1 but left to be fed1 clothed1 and sheltered by charity4 ,neither can they serve two masters1 giving only a portion of their time to ,god1 and still be ,christian ,scientists4 ,they must give ,him all their services1 and owe no man4 ,to do this1 they must at present ask a suitable price for their services1 and then conscientiously earn their wages1 strictly practising ,divine ,science1 and healing the sick4 ,the author never sought charitable support1 but gave fully seven-eighths of her time without remuneration1 except the bliss of doing good4 ,the only pay taken for her labors was from classes1 and often those were put off for months1 in order to do gratuitous work4 ,she has never taught a ,primary class without several1 and sometimes seventeen1 free students in it2 and has endeavored to take the full price of tuition only from those who were able to pay4 ,the student who pays must of necessity do better than he who does not pay1 and yet will expect and require others to pay him4 ,no discount on tuition was made on higher classes1 because their first classes furnished students with the means of paying for their tuition in the higher instruction1 and of doing charity work besides4 ,if the ,primary students are still impecunious1 it is their own fault1 and this ill-success of itself leaves them unprepared to enter higher classes4 ,people are being healed by means of my instructions1 both in and out of class4 ,many students1 who have passed through a regular course of instruction from me1 have been invalids and were healed in the class2 but experience has shown that this defrauds the scholar1 though it heals the sick4 ,it is seldom that a student1 if healed in a class1 has left it understanding sufficiently the ,science of healing to immediately enter upon its practice4 ,why8 ,because the glad surprise of suddenly regained health is a shock to the mind2 and this holds and satisfies the thought with exuberant joy4 ,this renders the mind less inquisitive1 plastic1 and tractable2 and deep systematic thinking is impracticable until this impulse subsides4 ,this was the principal reason for advising diseased people not to enter a class4 ,few were taken besides invalids for students1 until there were enough practitioners to fill in the best possible manner the department of healing4 ,teaching and healing should have separate departments1 and these should be fortified on all sides with suitable and thorough guardianship and grace4 ,only a very limited number of students can advantageously enter a class1 grapple with this subject1 and well assimilate what has been taught them4 ,it is impossible to teach thorough ,christian ,science to promiscuous and large assemblies1 or to persons who cannot be addressed individually1 so that the mind of the pupil may be dissected more critically than the body of a subject laid bare for anatomical examination4 ,public lectures cannot be such lessons in ,christian ,science as are required to empty and to fill anew the individual mind4 ,if publicity and material control are the motives for teaching1 then public lectures can take the place of private lessons2 but the former can never give a thorough knowledge of ,christian ,science1 and a ,christian ,scientist will never undertake to fit students for practice by such means4 ,lectures in public are needed1 but they must be subordinate to thorough class instruction in any branch of education4 ,none with an imperfect sense of the spiritual signification of the ,bible1 and its scientific relation to ,mind-healing1 should attempt overmuch in their translation of the ,scriptures into the new tongue2 but ,i see that some novices1 in the truth of ,science1 and some impostors are committing this error4 ,is there more than one school of scientific healing8 ,in reality there is1 and can be1 but one school of the ,science of ,mind-healing4 ,any departure from ,science is an irreparable loss of ,science4 ,whatever is said and written correctly on this ,science originates from the ,principle and practice laid down in ,science and ,health1 a work which ,i published in #ahge4 ,this was the first book1 recorded in history1 which elucidates a pathological ,science purely mental4 ,minor shades of difference in ,mind-healing have originated with certain opposing factions1 springing up among unchristian students1 who1 fusing with a class of aspirants which snatch at whatever is progressive1 call it their first-fruits1 or else post mortem evidence4 ,a slight divergence is fatal in ,science4 ,like certain ,jews whom ,st4 ,paul had hoped to convert from mere motives of self-aggrandizement to the love of ,christ1 these so-called schools are clogging the wheels of progress by blinding the people to the true character of ,christian ,science1--its moral power1 and its divine efficacy to heal4 ,the true understanding of ,christian ,science ,mind-healing never originated in pride1 rivalry1 or the deification of self4 ,the ,discoverer of this ,science could tell you of timidity1 of self-distrust1 of friendlessness1 toil1 agonies1 and victories under which she needed miraculous vision to sustain her1 when taking the first footsteps in this ,science4 ,the ways of ,christianity have not changed4 ,meekness1 selflessness1 and love are the paths of ,his testimony and the footsteps of ,his flock4
