work has been #bc1ggh4bd over the receipts4 ,our committee has denied many appeals pressed upon it1 from the workers in the field1 for needed growth and strengthening2 but some calls have come with such urgency to save the work already in hand1 that it felt constrained to grant the additional appropriations1 and we are very confident that if our constituents had been present1 they1 too1 would have concurred heartily and unanimously in the votes4 ,we might reasonably hope that this debtor balance would be wiped out during the five months of our fiscal year yet before us1 but there is a ,america1 these tribes are entrusted2 for their enlightenment and ,christianization1 we are responsible4 ,the ,government at ,washington can do something toward protecting these people in their political rights2 but there is very little1 after all1 that can be done for any people which does not know how to assert and maintain its own rights4 ,liberty can never be a gratuity1 it must always be an achievement4 ,peoples1 as well as individuals1 must work out their own salvation4 ,the ,negro at the ,south is cheated out of his political rights1 simply because he does not know how to claim them2 the ,indian on the plains is defrauded of his property1 because he does not know how to protect himself4 ,no matter how favorable the laws may be to these hapless people1 they will be oppressed and impoverished and kept in a condition of semi-slavery1 unless they know how to use the laws in their own advantage4 ,education1 therefore1 is the only effectual remedy for their wrongs4 ,to awaken their minds1 to arouse the energies of hope1 to show them that they are made in ,god's image and that they have a right to all the liberties of the laws of ,god1 is the only way to complete and secure their emancipation from bondage and from barbarism4 ,this is the work to which the ,american ,missionary ,association calls us all4 ,it is our just pride as ,congregationalists that through this ,association more has been done for the true enfranchisement of the freedmen than through any other agency1 and it is our duty to see that this great work1 in which we have borne so large and honorable a part1 halt not nor slacken in its energy because of our failure to keep its treasury replenished and its faithful laborers re-enforced and supported by our gifts and our prayers4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,facts ,,and ,,figures4 ,the sum total of all the contributions of all the benevolent agencies for the evangelization and education of the ,negro in the ,south1 is seventeen cents per year for each person4 ,this seventeen cents includes whatever is done in missionary colleges and in all educational missions1 as well as in the direct church work4 ,in twenty-one years from #ahda to #ahfa there were twenty-one crops of cotton raised by slave labor1 which aggregated #eh1dda1ijf bales4 #adi ,in the twenty-one years from #ahfe to #ahhe there were twenty-one crops of cotton which of individuals1 or the family1 or the social circle1 to draw their lines of association and fellowship at their own pleasure1 whether at wealth1 rank1 fashion1 talent1 or anything else4 ,to confound this with the real question1 is not candid4 #b4 ,still less is it the question of the inter-marriage of the races4 ,here1 individual preference is undeniable4 ,to claim that this is the question1 and to ask tauntingly3 ,do you want your daughter to marry a nigger8 is ungentlemanly and unworthy of an answer4 #c4 ,the question is3 ,shall a line be drawn between the white and black races1 giving rights and privileges in ,church and ,state to the one race1 which are denied to the other1 solely because of race or color8 ,in other words3 ,shall a line be drawn which shall separate the ,negroes1 and assign them as a race to the position of inferiors irrespective of merit or character1 and merely on the ground of race or color8 ,to narrow the discussion1 we leave out of view the civil or political aspect of the question and confine ourselves to the religious1 and we propose to give a few illustrations4 ,a ,negro in every way qualified1 in character1 piety1 and intelligence1 applies for membership in a white church4 ,shall the color-line be drawn and he be refused admission for no other reason than that he is a ,negro8 ,this does not imply that the whites and blacks should be urged or persuaded to unite in all churches or in any church4 ,it may be conceded that the blacks generally do not desire to unite with white churches1 and that1 in their present state of culture1 it may not always be for their edification to do so4 ,but where an individual ,negro does believe that it would be for his edification and growth in grace to belong to a white church1 shall the color that ,god stamped on him1 or the race in which ,god gave him his birth1 be a sufficient reason #aej for refusing him8 ,the question and the principle apply equally if the ,negro should be given to understand that while he would not actually be refused admission1 yet the preference of the church would be that he should not apply2 nay1 we do not see why the principle is not the same if the well-known attitude of the church on the race question should be such that the ,christian self-respect of the ,negro would not allow him to make the application4 ,again1 shall colored churches1 conferences or presbyteries be formed on the same territory in order that the colored members may not unite with the white churches1 conferences or presbyteries8 ,shall a line be run between the races on the simple ground of race or color1 and irrespective of character1 convenience or choice1 so that the ,negro as a church member shall not be allowed to choose the church he shall join1 or as a minister the option as to his conference or presbytery8 ,for one race to demand such a line of separation1 is to consign the other race to a position of inferiority as humiliating as it is discouraging4 ,such is the demand of race prejudice1 and such the position of inferiority in which it insists on placing the ,negro4 ,slavery held the ,negro there1 and since emancipation1 this race-separation is intended to accomplish the same purpose4 ,the ,southern white man makes no objection to the race or color of the ,negro1 but only to his position as an equal4 ,he was not merely tolerated1 he was more than tolerated1 as a slave1 and he is now as a servant4 ,the present controversy in regard to the color-line is calling forth some frank admissions from intelligent white men at the ,south4 ,thus the ,rev4 ,wm4 ,h4 ,campbell1 an ,episcopal clergyman of ,south ,carolina1 vindicates his refusal to sit in ,convention with the ,negroes by the inferiority which the ,almighty has stamped upon them4 ,mr4 ,campbell says3 ,the ,bishop does not understand or appreciate the reasons why some of us cannot1 under any circumstances1 sit in ,convention with ,negroes4 ,the objections commonly made need not here be referred to4 ,the difficulty with some of us is not 'on account of color1' as it is usually1 but not with strict accuracy1 put2 for some ,negroes are as white as some white men1 but because they are of an inferior race1 so made by the ,almighty and never intended by him to be put on an equality with the white race1 in either ,church or ,state4 ,the question at issue is not one of expediency1 but of principle2 and1 among ,christians1 whether in the individual church or the ecclesiastical body1 it is a question of ,christian duty to be settled by the ,divine authority of the ,master himself4 ,we propose no argument on the subject1 but content ourselves by quoting a few well-known passages of ,scripture1 which1 though familiar1 have lost neither their significancy nor their authority4 ,in the end1 the voice of ,god must be decisive4 ,and hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth4 ,god hath showed me that ,i should call no man common or unclean4 #aea ,of a truth ,i perceive that ,god is no respecter of persons1 but in every nation1 he that feareth ,him and worketh righteousness is accepted with ,him4 ,there is neither ,jew nor ,greek1 there is neither bond nor free1 there is neither male nor female1 for ye are all one in ,christ4 ,inasmuch as ye have not done it unto one of the least of these1 my brethren1 ye have not done it unto me4 99 99 99 99 99 ,secretary ,roy1 in the ,advance1 controverts the statement of the ,herald and ,presbyter1 that the ,congregationalists have come to consent to separate ecclesiastical bodies on the ground of color4 ,dr4 ,roy supposes that this conclusion may have been jumped at because of the formation of a new ,congregational ,association in ,georgia1 which is an outcome from the ,congregational ,methodist churches there4 ,the ,interior1 evidently with gladness1 makes the same assertion4 ,the ,christian ,union replies to this1 saying1 ,we do not think this is true2 but1 if it is1 so much the worse for the ,congregationalists6 ,we may say with ,dr4 ,roy1 that nothing is more certain than that in the ,new ,empire that is growing before our eyes1 the ,congregational churches of this century will not turn towards the dark ages1 and will not put themselves to shame by refusing to fellowship with the disciples of ,christ on the ground of caste4 ,such a proposition would have the scorn of our ,national ,council4 ,the ,christianity of our churches will not fall behind the humanity of ,victor ,hugo1 who said1 ,i have had in my hand the gloved and white palm of the upper class and the heavy black hand of the lower class1 and have recognized that both are the hands of man4 ,the ,congregational churches may not be quoted as countenancing this great wickedness against ,god and man4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,from ,,address ,,of ,,rev4 ,e4,t4 ,,fleming ,,of ,,georgia1 ,,in ,,the ,,broadway ,,tabernacle ,,of ,,new ,,york4 ,i suppose it will be necessary to tell you that ,i am a ,negro1 that ,i was born a slave4 ,we are struggling against difficulties4 ,we meet with a great deal of opposition4 ,a case comes to mind which shows something of this opposition4 ,i went out into what we call the ,bottom ,district4 ,the church there was dirty4 ,i went to work and got a sufficient amount of money to buy a barrel of lime4 ,it took me a week to get enough money to buy a barrel of lime4 ,another brother and myself got the barrel of lime there on a wheel-barrow4 ,we whitewashed the church inside and out1 and finished the job about half-past eleven o'clock4 ,it was too late to return to the city1 and we agreed to sleep in the church4 ,the next morning1 ,i was surprised to hear a great noise on the outside1 and opening the door1 looked out and saw a lean1 lank1 white woman4 ,she was calling to her daughter1 ,louisa1 ,louisa1 come here4 ,her daughter #aeb came to her mother and said1 ,my ---- ----1 they have painted the nigger church white4 ,we must put a stop to that4 ,they said we would have to move the church1 on the ground that they were not going to stand anything of that kind4 ,these are the things that meet us in opposition there4 ,i was myself refused admittance to a ,gospel ,tent where a distinguished evangelist from the ,north was preaching4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a ,,striking ,,statement4 ,in one of the hotels in ,columbia1 ,south ,carolina1 among the collections of an excellent library1 is a book which bears the seal of the ,state of ,south ,carolina1 giving much statistical information as to the geological character of the ,state1 its agricultural resources1 its mineral products and the peculiarities of its population4 ,from its pages1 the following extract is taken1 which is reproduced here for its suggestiveness4 ,it seems incredible1 and yet the authority is wholly ,southern and has the imprint of the ,state4 ,it is as follows3 ,no effort adequate to even an approximate determination statistically of the intermixture of the ,white and ,negro races has as yet been undertaken4 ,mr4 ,patterson1 quoted in an authoritative work upon ',the ,resources and ,population of ,south ,carolina1' and published by the ,state ,board of ,agriculture in #ahhc1 as one who has given much attention to the subject1 says1 even now there are no longer ,negroes4 ,one-third has a large infusion of white blood1 another third has less1 but still some1 and of the other third it would be difficult to find an assured specimen of pure ,african blood4 ,this1 continues the report1 is a startling statement2 but in the absence of statistics1 whoever puts it to the test among his ,negro acquaintance will be surprised at the degree in which it conforms to the facts4 ,if the lineage of those ,negroes whose color and features seem most unmistakably to mark them as of purely ,african descent1 be traced1 indubitable evidence may often be obtained of white parentage more or less remote4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,misapplied ,,benefactions4 ,the judicious placing of benefaction is a large part of the good of it4 ,is it wisely located8 ,will it be permanent8 ,will it be reproductive8 ,will it be in the hands of persons suitably responsible for the administration of it8 ,will it be under a fitting supervision8 ,the cause appeals to sympathy2 does it also carry the mark of good judgment8 ,for lack of this double endorsement1 not a little of generous giving is thrown away4 ,it is a fine piece of romance2 does it proffer a sufficient security upon the proffered investment of the ,lord's money8 ,a worthy ,christian woman brings the scheme4 ,it is laid upon the mountains of ,east ,tennessee1 thrust up into notoriety by the writing of ,charles ,egbert ,craddock4 ,a lady of faith and hope and energy1 #aec proposes to build up an industrial farm-school of high quality for the neglected girls of that mountain district4 ,she has already been teaching a common-school among them4 ,she comes up to a city of ,new ,england4 ,she lays her plan before some of the noble women there4 ,they take it up without further inquiry as to the feasibility of the undertaking4 ,with their first contributions an old worn-out farm is bought in the lady's name1 and in the cheap farm-house a small school is opened4 ,the location is in an out-of-the-way neighborhood1 three or four miles from the little1 old1 tumble-down county seat4 ,now a fine building is to be secured4 ,the lady patrons raise their offerings up to six thousand dollars4 ,fine architectural plans are devised at the ,north4 ,meantime1 speculators on the ground1 who for a few cents an acre have bought up a great quantity of land adjoining and would be glad to sell it at a dollar an acre1 have donated a hundred acres1 more or less1 to the school4 ,on this tract the building is located and goes forward4 ,the frame is put up and pretty much enclosed4 ,for want of money the enterprise comes to a stand1 and now for these four years the stranded structure has been taking damage from the storms4 ,the place has been visited repeatedly by the superintendents of the ,a4,m4,a41 to find the state of the case and to see if anything could be done to utilize the partial plant4 ,the pastor of the lady donors became interested to save the investment through the ,a4,m4,a41 or to stop the pouring of more funds into the venture1 but after all his correspondence and personal conference1 he found that1 if the whole property were to be offered to the ,association1 it could not afford to accept it and undertake to carry forward the school4 ,it already has a prosperous academy in that county and another in an adjoining county1 and these1 wisely located in congenial communities1 are all that is needed for those and for contiguous counties4 ,there is no way to utilize it1 ,alas1 ,wherefore this waste8 ,an ,orphanage for colored children is a tempting charity4 ,the ,a4,m4,a early undertook such work4 ,at ,wilmington1 ,n4,c41 and at ,atlanta1 ,ga41 it bought lands and erected ample buildings1 but the experiment satisfied the authorities that the ,association was not called to that department of work4 ,the children's god-fathers and god-mothers1 in devotion to their covenant1 or grand-parents from personal interest1 would soon be taking them out1 and others having care of them would call them out as soon as1 by some growth and training1 the scholars were made profitable for work1 and so those properties were sold and the avails put into the ordinary educational process4 ,then the conclusion was reached that this was the obligation of the local communities1 and not of foreign charity4 ,according to this idea1 an ,orphanage in a ,southern city1 undertaken not by the patronage or approval of the ,a4,m4,a41 though made to appear so because the originator had been under its commission there as a missionary1 has been transferred to a local board and to the support of the city #aed and county4 ,that is as it should be4 ,those local authorities ought to take care of their own orphans1 and not appeal to the charity of the ,north to relieve them of their proper burdens of humanity4 ,another so-called ,orphanage at still another ,southern city1 started as an individual venture4 ,it was allowed for a short time to have a conditional endorsement from the ,a4,m4,a41 which was soon withdrawn and the enterprise disowned4 ,this has swallowed up thousands of dollars of the money of benevolence1 and yet it has all the time been a sham and a falsehood4 ,there was nothing of it4 ,when a lady newspaper correspondent called to visit the institution1 ten or a dozen children from a neighboring private school were borrowed and paraded as orphans1 when at the time there were only two little children in the concern1 and they had grandparents living near and abundantly able to take care of them4 ,wherefore this waste8 ,in yet another ,southern city1 a couple of young ladies start a school4 ,having once been under commission of the ,a4,m4,a41 in connection with its institutions1 they appear to many to have its endorsement and they make appeal to its constituents4 ,money comes along for a work irresponsibly begun and without supervision4 ,only a year goes by before they appeal by their leaflet-paper for several thousand dollars to buy land and build a home and school property4 ,who but they shall hold and own the property8 ,whose shall it be when they marry or grow weary of the work and leave8 ,what protection is there for such misplaced benefaction8 ,by no means would the ,association seek to interfere with donations to individuals where the donors investigate for themselves and assume the responsibility1 but it is not fair that we should be held as apparently responsible for movements that we disown1 and it is not fair to our constituents that we should allow them to remain under the impression that in giving to irresponsible projects1 they are favoring such as are endorsed by us4 ,thirty-five years ago the ,congregational ,union was initiated in the ,albany ,convention on purpose to protect ,eastern friends from the miscellaneous and irresponsible and persistent solicitation for individual church enterprise4 ,it is the business of that ,society to receive1 inspect and decide upon all such applications4 ,take it away and the flood gates would be lifted again4 ,no less in the cause of missionary education is such discretionary service needed4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,negro ,,question4 ,this is the title of a recent brochure by ,george ,w4 ,cable1 published by the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,with the most vigorous and courageous devotion to the question that is the gravest in ,american affairs1 ,mr4 ,cable addresses himself to the problem and to the answer that should be made to it4 ,his apprehension of injustice is so keen and true1 #aee and his seriousness1 in view of the weariness and offence that the whole subject gives to a great majority of the people1 is so urgent1 that the paper has been criticized as pessimistic1 and as an impatient cry against evils that are speedily being rectified4 ,we may say that the that the work of the ,american ,missionary ,association makes upon our attention1 may be presented in a variety of forms4 ,its work is commended to us1 for example1 because it is patriotic1 that is1 it makes its appeal to our self-interest4 ,the instinct of self-preservation demands that we sustain it4 ,four and a half millions of ,negroes in our ,southern ,states are utterly illiterate4 ,half that number of ,southern whites are in the same deplorable condition4 ,these men are citizens4 ,they hold the ballot4 ,our free institutions are not safe in such hands as these4 ,education is an absolute necessity4 ,this wide-spreading and dense ignorance1 among masses of free ,american people1 must be speedily overcome4 ,we do not wonder1 therefore1 that ,andrew ,d4 ,white in his scholarly address1 ,the ,message of the #aith ,century to the #bjth1 puts the education of the ,south first among the many great and pressing problems that claim the attention of statesmen4 ,it is a matter of self-interest and self-preservation4 ,this work commends itself1 also1 because of its justice4 ,it appeals as a duty1 to every enlightened conscience4 ,the ignorance of the ,negro1 and the degradation of the ,indian1 are more our fault than theirs4 ,we owe it to them1 as a matter of simple justice1 that we now make reparation1 as best we can1 for the wrong done to them in the past4 ,if we1 as a nation1 have helped push them down1 we ought to help lift them up4 ,it is a burden which stern justice lays upon us4 ,but ,i turn from all such impressive arguments as these1 to find another and altogether different motive to this work1 one which the statesman may consider of little worth1 the appeal of which mere conscience may not feel1 but1 which to the ,christian heart must ever be more powerful and persuasive than all other motives that can be named4 ,this work commends itself to us1 because it is a ,christly work4 ,the spirit of the ,master is in it4 ,the radical forces of ,christianity are exemplified by it4 ,this ,society may stand forth before the world to-day1 and without any sacrifice of humility or reverence1 opening the book and finding the place where it is written1 it may say1 in concert with the ,master himself1 ,the ,spirit of the ,lord ,god is upon me1 because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor1 he hath sent me to bind up the broken-hearted1 to proclaim deliverance to the captives1 and the opening of the prison to them that are bound1 to proclaim the acceptable year of the ,lord that ,he might be glorified4 ,and here is its strongest claim upon our sympathy and support4 ,that this representation is not an exaggerated one1 and that the claim is in no way over-stated1 we shall see more clearly as the comparison is followed out in detail4 ,the work which this ,association has in hand will #aeh bear the test of analysis4 ,it is not only a ,christian work1 it is a work which1 from the beginning1 has called into exercise the fundamental principles of ,christianity4 ,it exemplifies ,christianity in its most original and essential features4 ,i4--,a ,,radical ,,faith4 ,as ,i look into this work1 the first thing that impresses me is the faith that inspired it4 ,it was a most sublime undertaking4 ,it began1 so far as relates to its present fields of labor1 with the millions of freedmen just emancipated from two and a half centuries of bondage4 ,what this bondage signified1 this present generation will find it difficult to realize4 ,for years it had been a crime to teach them the alphabet4 ,they had been bought and sold like cattle4 ,their lives were a daily school in sensual immorality1 deceit and dishonesty4 ,every manly aspiration1 and womanly feeling1 was smothered at its birth4 ,they had come from savagery to slavery1 and in a day1 without training or preparation1 they were set free4 ,it is no wonder that they were ignorant1 indolent1 degraded and despised4 ,as one of their own number says1 ,we came into bondage naked and destitute of worldly goods1 we went out of it penniless1 homeless and almost characterless4 ,now it was this mass of degraded humanity that this ,association set itself to elevate and ,christianize1 and it did it with a calm assurance and serene hope which no obstacle has as yet been able to disturb4 ,the road has been a long and hard one1 but it did not anticipate an easy time or miraculous success4 ,it has met with new and perhaps unexpected difficulties4 ,it may be that all the workers would say what the ,president of ,talladega writes in a recent letter1 ,the magnitude of the obstacles are more and more real to me as ,i live and work4 ,but they still live and they still work1 never doubting the final result4 ,if you want to find men who have undying faith in the future of the black race1 go to those who1 in the spirit of their ,master1 are toiling night and day1 under the commission of this ,society1 for its elevation4 ,in the same spirit1 also1 this ,association has welcomed new labors and entered into new fields4 ,when ,chinamen were to be ,christianized1 immediately it had great faith for the ,chinese4 ,when the ,indian missions were laid upon it1 then it saw wonderful possibilities in the red man4 ,and now1 last of all1 when some million or two of long-forgotten and neglected ,mountain ,whites are brought to its attention1 it sees in these abjectly poor1 dispirited and superstitious people1 only another opportunity for elevating humanity1 and proving the power of ,christianity to restore the lost manhood of every race4 ,these servants of ,god are not engaged in a forlorn hope4 ,they have faith4 ,wherever they work there they expect results1 not only in the saving of individual souls1 but in regenerating whole races of men4 ,a ,christian woman1 missionary to the poor whites among the mountains of ,east #aei ,tennessee1 under the inspiration of her great faith1 writes home to her friends1 ,we can almost hear the bells ring in unreared steeples1 and hear the songs from choirs that are as yet totally oblivious to the spirit of melody1 and enter into the heart-worship of the prayer meetings that are to be when shall have been fulfilled the prophecy1 that 'to the people which sat in darkness and the shadow of death1 light is sprung up'4 ,such buoyant1 hopeful faith as this1 so clear and beautiful in its confidence in the promises of ,god1 is one of the radical forces which command1 while they inspire1 this holy work4 ,,ii4--,a ,,radical ,,love4 ,but what may be called the special characteristic of this ,society among missionary organizations doing work in our own land1 that which establishes its special claim upon hearts of ,christian people1 is the radical spirit of love there is in it4 ,it exemplifies in a most practical way1 the brotherhood of man4 ,it repudiates caste4 ,it is absolutely color-blind4 ,it works for the despised4 ,it helps those who are themselves the most helpless4 ,this is no newly-discovered fact4 ,i remember the first sermon ,i ever heard in behalf of this work1 more than twenty years ago2 it was drawn from the ,parable of the ,good ,samaritan4 ,the text was1 ,who is my neighbor8 ,the address of the honored late ,president of this ,association at the close of the last ,annual ,meeting which he attended1 was in the trend of this very same ,scripture4 ,this organization1 he said1 is the ,good ,samaritan1 loving to bestow its aid upon the poorest and most despised1 the most severely wounded races of our country4 ,the sermon1 a score of years ago1 told us that our neighbor was the ,negro1 just then made free4 ,so said ,president ,washburn1 ,if you can point out to this organization any race that needs its assistance1 whether colored or white1 there is the legitimate field of this ,association4 ,it would seem that a law so emphatically taught by ,jesus ,christ as the common brotherhood of man1 and so familiar to the world1 would long ago have been accepted and adopted in the practice of ,christian nations1 especially by a ,christian ,republic within its own borders4 ,but1 instead of that1 it is the hardest of all laws for us to learn and the most difficult of all to put in operation4 ,our policy toward the general colored races in this land has been one of cold-hearted and cruel selfishness4 ,as ex-,senator ,brace has said1 speaking in behalf of his own people1 ,from the red race was taken their lands1 from the yellow their labor1 from the black their persons4 ,the red race was gradually driven toward a setting sun2 the yellow race1 the rabble demanded to be driven from the country2 the black man was a slave in chains1 with no rights which the ,constitution recognized4 ,these unjust prejudices are by no means altogether a thing of the past4 ,they are not as violent as they once were1 thanks to the influence #afj of this ,association1 but they still exist4 ,niggers1 are still ordered out of ,southern churches4 ,many a professed ,christian still wants his ,indian dead4 ,this work has all along been compelled to fight its way against suspicion1 bigotry and hatred2 it must do so still1 because it recognizes man as man1 whether his skin be white or black1 red or yellow2 and1 in taking this radical ground1 it is interpreting to the world the benevolent spirit of the ,saviour1 and is preparing the way for that universal reign of love on earth which ,he came to establish4 ,such a work as this is the salvation of our ,christianity4 ,without it1 one of the chief evidences for ,christianity would be taken away1 and the spirit of it would die4 ,standing before a congregation of white men1 ,negroes and ,indians1 with a ,chinamen or two to make the tale complete1 ,president ,mark ,hopkins last ,may dedicated the new chapel at ,hampton to the worship of ,almighty ,god4 ,he voiced the sentiment of this whole ,association when he said1 ,here will be taught and promoted a ,christianity as narrow in its creed as revealed truth1 and as broad in its love as humanity6 ,a creed as narrow as revealed truth4 ,yes6 we want no inspirations from outside the sacred book4 ,a love as broad as humanity4 ,by all means1 yes6 for no smaller measure will satisfy the demands of that book or fulfil the will of the ,master4 ,,iii4--,a ,,radical ,,consecration4 ,another principle required in this work and exemplified by it1 is a thorough-going consecration4 ,the men and women who have taken up this work1 have followed ,christ in his self-abnegation4 ,there is no worldly honor in it4 ,it is not an easy life4 ,you know well enough how these devoted missionaries have braved social ostracism1 and shut themselves in to their lowly ministry4 ,with the ,christly sympathy of identification1 they have made themselves one with their despised brethren1 bearing their burdens1 sharing their privations1 stooping to meet their needs4 ,what almost infinite patience it has sometimes required1 what forbearance and charity1 we cannot know1 but they have served willingly and cheerfully1 and found the sacrifice to be a joy4 ,and there are many of them1 in school and church and home1 in our ,southern land and in the ,western wilds1 who are serving there in a spirit of self-abnegation and patient sacrifice1 and whom ,god will honor4 ,these faithful workers are not martyrs2 but there is something heroic in their lives4 ,it is the heroism of those who lay upon themselves the lowliest duties1 and perform them in the spirit of the loftiest devotion4 ,the work that calls forth such consecration as this1 so disinterested and sincere1 bears its own letter of commendation4 ,the spirit of ,him1 who came to minister1 and to give his life a ransom for many1 is exemplified by it4 ,,iv4--,a ,,radical ,,method4 ,there is one thing more that ,i would mention4 ,it is the radical #afa method which this ,association has adopted in doing its work4 ,it has never been satisfied with surface culture4 ,it strikes down to the roots of character4 ,not quantity1 but quality1 is manifestly its motto4 ,as an illustration of intelligent thoroughness in ,christian service1 therefore1 this ,association commends itself to our regard4 ,a decided advance was marked in missionary work when the church came to see that not only the conversion of the heathen1 but their establishment in ,christian character1 was a legitimate object of missionary endeavor4 ,francis ,xavier in ten years visited fifty kingdoms and baptized a million converts1 but the ten years' labor of some of our modern missionaries1 spent in laying solid foundations and thoroughly training a few chosen men1 may1 after all1 come to more in its permanent results upon the world1 than all that was done by ,rome's great apostle4 ,jesus gave the best part of his three years of public ministry to the training of twelve men4 ,he might have baptised a million4 ,he preferred to do thorough work with a few4 ,this ,association has acted upon this principle4 ,it has sought to develop manhood and womanhood after the pattern and by the power that is in ,jesus ,christ4 ,it calls to its aid every possible force4 ,it educates the mind1 the heart1 the conscience1 the hand4 ,it uses the church1 the school1 the workshop and the ,christian home4 ,character-building is its vocation1 the foundation ,jesus ,christ1 the superstructure such as should stand the test of fire4 ,these oppressed races need above all things else leaders from among themselves4 ,it has been the endeavor of this ,society to furnish them--men and women of such moral and mental quality as shall be fitted for the responsible position4 ,they have been taught to think1 to work and to live4 ,because labor is a moral force in establishing character1 industrial education is introduced4 ,nothing is too great to be attempted1 nothing too trivial to be omitted1 the object always being the substantial development of moral and ,christian character4 ,such is this mission4 ,it has gone forth in the spirit of ,christ1 with faith and love and consecration1 seeking to do an honest work with thoroughness4 ,god's blessing has been upon it4 ,it has results to show in the renovated and ennobled lives of thousands who have been the subjects of its ministry2 and its broader influence in the elevation of the oppressed and despised races1 begins even now to be clearly apparent4 ,it has been a faithful monitor to the churches which have sustained it1 an inspirer of their benevolence1 an almoner of their gifts1 and an honor to their name4 ,and beyond all this1 standing for those principles which are most essential and fundamental in ,christianity1 it has glorified ,god by exhibiting to the world the power of ,christian faith and sacrifice4 ,those who have been bound of ,satan1 lo1 these many years1 are loosed from their bonds and made free in ,christ4 ,war has struck off the chains of human bondage4 ,love shall now complete cordiality1 teachers who come among them4 ,the white people1 as well as the colored1 need missionary schools1 as the illiteracy among them is appalling4 ,think of it6 ,seven-tenths of one per cent4 of the native white population of ,massachusetts are illiterate1 while twenty-three per cent4 of the native white population of ,georgia1 and thirty-one per cent4 of the same population of ,north ,carolina are illiterate66 ,why should not ,georgia be proud of her educated 787 citizens1 and do all she dare to drive some of the best teachers there are in the ,state outside her borders8 99 99 99 99 99 ,right in this connection it would be interesting to read the following letter4 ,a brief word of history1 however1 is necessary that it may be understood4 ,in #ahgh1 a young man1 a graduate of one of the leading ,new ,england colleges1 enlisted in the great army of ,a4,m4,a4 teachers4 ,he was a quiet1 unassuming1 ,christian student4 ,the amazing ignorance of the ,southern people1 both white and black1 awoke his pity2 and his love1 for his ,saviour1 and for his country1 led him to give himself to this most needy field4 ,he was embarrassed and badgered by those who ought to have welcomed him1 and helped him in his work4 ,this mean and unworthy opposition with which our ,a4,m4,a4 teachers are so familiar1 culminated in his case1 in a series of letters in which his life was threatened4 ,it was just before the election of ,president ,cleveland4 ,there was evidently1 a well-matured plan to drive him out of the community1 and to intimidate the ,negroes so that they would not dare to vote4 ,the following was one of these letters3 #afc ,mr ---- deer ,sir ,it is for your own good ,that ,i write ,this letter to you you are an advocate for ,social ,equality with the white and the ,black race and the ,people are not going to ,put up with any ,such doings and ,i write you this letter to warn you of ,the danger and the great danger ,that you are in ,you must leve ,the country right away for ,the ,people have ,pledged ,them ,seves to get you out of the contry or ,kill you and ,that in a mity ,short time ,now as a frend ,i do beg you to give this matter your emmediate attention ,i am very truly your well wisher meaning ,exactly wat ,i ,say ,i saw all these letters1 and received this one from the hand of this ,christian hero4 ,he said to me3--,i went to bed a good many nights thinking that quite possibly ,i should be dragged out of my bed1 and beaten or hanged before morning4 ,notwithstanding this1 he wrote on the outside of the envelope the following words1 and passed them around among those whom he knew to be conspirators against him3 ,in answer to the enclosed1 ,i will say to my ',democratic and inquiring friends1' that ,i expect to leave on or before ,jan4 #ast1 #aidj1 and that though ,i hoped to vote for ',st4 ,john and ,prohibition1' ,i have now decided to vote for ',blaine and the ,protection of all citizens in their political and civil rights4' ,when he gave me this letter1 he took a promise that it should not be published until after his death4 ,he passed away in the triumph of his sweet1 but heroic faith a few months ago4 ,he died where he had suffered and dared for ,christ's sake1 in the midst of this ignorance and sin4 ,such stories as his ought to be told4 ,it is cowardly timidity for those of us who know them1 to keep them from the ,christian public4 ,heroes and heroines answer to the roll-call of ,a4,m4,a4 workers4 ,i have met them and mingled with them1 the past three years1 and ,i know the sinew and fibre of their courageous faith4 ,you1 who send them out1 and who support them in the field1 ought to know what they endure1 and hear1 now and then1 an incident of their heroism4 99 99 99 99 99 ,two cases of heroic self-denial have come under my notice recently4 ,in ,macon there lives a colored woman whose husband is in an ,insane ,asylum4 ,their home was recently burned to the ground4 ,she has four #afd small children with her1 the eldest of whom is eleven years old1 who are dependent upon her for support4 ,she earns just eight dollars per month1 and yet she sends one girl1 aged fifteen1 to ,atlanta ,university6 ,a young man1 whose father was a white man and who is himself a blonde1 has been urgently invited by his white grandmother to come to her home and take the position of her son's child4 ,she is a wealthy woman1 owning a large plantation4 ,the young man's father1 her son1 is dead4 ,the boy would have all the privileges of a wealthy young white man and inherit the property on his grandmother's death4 ,the sole condition which the grandmother makes is that he shall give up all association with his octoroon mother and refuse to recognize her in any way4 ,thank ,god1 the boy is too true to his gentle and loving mother to enter into any such arrangement1 even though the bribe offered is thousands of dollars and a social position of great attractiveness4 ,there is a great deal of this quiet but heroic self-sacrifice among the colored people in the ,south1 that never finds its way into print4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,alabama ,,association4 ,,president ,h4,s4 ,,deforest4 ,the thirteenth annual meeting of the ,alabama ,association was held at ,salma1 ,march #cjth to ,april #c;d1 when the floods were at their highest1 yet fourteen of our seventeen churches were represented4 ,the ,sunday-school ,association convened a day earlier1 and one afternoon the ,woman's ,missionary ,association had a session by itself4 ,the opening sermon by ,professor ,andrews1 was a powerful exposition of ,christian love1 from the #acth of #ast ,corinthians4 ,one evening was given to the higher1 ,christian education2 one to three papers on ,how to ,secure ,homes1 ,the ,home ,indoors1 and ,home ,piety2 and the last to three phases of the temperance question4 ,pastor ,c4,b4 ,curtis1 whose church most generously entertained the ,association1 read a very suggestive paper on ,self ,support of the ,churches1 a pressing and difficult question4 ,almost of necessity1 when there is so much to be done1 and the resources are so small compared with the magnitude of the undertakings1 practical rather than theoretical questions come to the front and engage earnest attention4 ,after a most satisfactory examination1 six young men from the ,theological ,department of ,talladega ,college were licensed to preach1 and it is noteworthy1 that1 besides this latest gift of ,talladega to the ministry1 eleven of the fourteen churches represented at this meeting of the ,association are ministered to by ,talladega ,college or its graduates4 ,it is a wonder that some man wishing to put a comparatively small sum of money where it would increase with a compound interest of blessedness till the latter-day glories have fully come1 does not endow the chair of ,theology at ,talladega1 and his brothers take up the same line of usefulness till both #afe ,college and ,seminary are presided for4 ,some who were taking the rudiments of learning here but a few years ago1 and who have continued their training at very email expense1 are now acceptably filling difficult and responsible positions in school1 in business and in church4 ,there is more of this work to be done1 and to be allowed to help seems a privilege precious enough to make life vastly desirable4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,temperance ,,work ,,in ,,our ,,schools4 ,our esteemed neighbor at #eh ,reade ,street1 ,mr4 ,j4,n4 ,stearns1 ,publishing ,agent of the ,national ,temperance ,society1 recently made a visit to ,florida4 ,on his return trip1 he visited several of the ,a4,m4,a4 schools in the ,south1 and his practiced eye of course detected the facts in regard to temperance instruction and influence4 ,we quote the following items3
