immediate aim2 then we can throw upon these the work of developing native teachers and preachers for the rest4 ,there are forty counties waiting for us1 and all our mountain work so far is in three or four4 ,i see this place where ,i am1 changing like magic under the influence of school and church1 but the necessity for our going forward oppresses me4 ,i am ready for any additional labor1 and will ,states of ,america1 in the year #ahhh1 our missionaries were imprisoned for reading the ,bible to a heathen tribe of ,indians who lived remote from civilization1 the crime of it being that it was read in the only language which they could understand8 ,yet the orders are1 writes a missionary1 that we shall hold only two services on a ,sunday and two during the week1 and that we shall cease to read the ,bible in the ,indian homes4 ,this is the ,government authority of the great and free ,united ,states1 but is there any authority greater than ,god8 99 99 99 99 99 ,in an eloquent address at the ,old ,south ,church in ,boston1 on ,sunday1 ,march #dth1 ,george ,w4 ,cable accentuated in strong words the work in which we are engaged4 ,here is the mightiest1 the widest1 the most fruitful1 the most abundant1 the most prolific1 missionary field that was ever opened to any ,christian people4 ,we quote from his address3 ,the benevolence of ,northern men and women1 yea1 and even of ,northern children1 helped to establish in the ,south these missionary colleges1 these educational missions1 wherein not the black man alone1 not the black woman alone1 but every one who was qualified with orderly behavior and a rational intellect might come1 and get1 not only an education1 but a ,christian education1 and not only a ,christian education1 but a ,christian ,american education4 ,these institutions1 standing out in the darkness when nothing else stood by them1 when the land was racked and torn and bled afresh under the agonies of reconstruction1 these institutions began and carried and the gospel there is on the face of this earth1 not counted among our white race4 ,i suppose that ninety-nine one-hundredths of those who generously give to this cause believe to-day that it is imagination which saw a ,new ,south in almost millennial array1 and told of it with an enthusiasm so contagious that to the sons of the ,pilgrims after the fulness of a great dinner it seemed that the ,promised day of ,israel had at last arrived4 ,it is true that when this dinner had been thoroughly digested1 certain ones1 removed from the afflatus of the occasion began to ask1 ,are these things so8 ,and when the ,glenn ,bill sought the endorsement of public opinion1 and substantially received it with no word of reprobation from the eloquent orator and editor1 some recalled the speech of ,sheridan in reply to ,mr4 ,dundas1 ,the right honorable gentleman is indebted to his imagination for his facts4 99 99 99 99 99 ,in all this time no one suspected the ,atlanta ,constitution of possessing the humorous character which it has lately revealed4 ,in late issues of ,february it has1 in the garb of gravity1 about two columns that are ridiculously funny4 ,it appears that ,prof4 ,sumner ,salter1 a graduate of ,amherst ,college1 a son of an honored pastor of ,iowa1 a musical director of exceptional gifts and a teacher of eminent ability1 was solicited by parties in ,atlanta to take his residence there in the interest of the musical cultivation of such as could secure his services4 ,he soon attracted the patronage of society1 and all went smoothly until the tempter came4 ,alas1 there was a serpent in ,eden1 so there was a skeleton in the closet of the ,atlanta ,constitution4 ,it was a dreadful skeleton4 ,the ,constitution seriously publishes the fact that it was whispered about for some time1 until patience ceased to be a virtue1 when it sent a guardian of public safety in the form of a reporter to investigate4 ,was it really true that a white man who was giving music lessons to white people was also teaching a colored class at another time and place8 ,if so1 what about the ,new ,south8 ,the black man had no business to be black1 but he was all the same1 and being so what right had ,prof4 ,salter to teach colored people to sing8 ,let the matter be thoroughly searched out4 ,the reporter departed on his mission1 with a countenance more in sorrow than in anger1 and returned vice versa4 ',tis true1 'tis pity1 ,and pity 'tis 'tis true4 ,the professor was actually doing this very absurd thing4 ,he had taken charge of a colored class in the church of which ,rev4 ,evarts ,kent is minister and was teaching them how rightly to use the talents with which ,god had so richly endowed them4 #ie ,accordingly1 in the year of grace #ahhh1 the ,atlanta ,,business ,,said ,,to ,,be ,,injured4 ,then followed the whole sad story4 ,the musician had been interviewed and investigated4 ,he did not deny the serious charge to this superintendent of public proprieties4 ,with a heart as hard as old ,pharaoh's he proposed to go on and do more likewise4 ,in short1 the representative of the ,constitution could do nothing with this intractable professor4 ,hence he did not stand upon the order of his going1 but went at once1 and reported that according to ,mr4 ,suiter's own statement1 he is teaching a colored class1 and he has lost a white pupil1 which shows that his course is hurting his business4 ,diligent inquiry has failed to bring to light any proof that he has notified his white pupils that he is teaching colored people4 ,leaving out the meanness of this1 has anyone read anything published lately more ridiculous8 ,it is not necessary to quote the professor's public reply4 ,it simply claimed the right of manhood and common sense1 and doubtless left the ,constitution wondering how a man capable of making it appear so foolish could yet descend to such depths of ignominy as to teach people whose ancestors came from ,africa1 the unpardonable sin of singing praises to the ,author of their being4 ,to what deeps some will descend6 ,why should colored people add to the criminality of being born black1 the fearful temptation of in the year #ahhh1 and was in successive issues of the ,constitution1 which shows among other things that there is latitude1 if not longitude1 at a ,brooklyn ,new ,england dinner4 ,meanwhile we think we hear ,uncle ,rastus quoting the prophecy1 ,the morning cometh and also the night1 but he can't help laughing because it is awful funny4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,educational ,,work ,,in ,,the ,,south4 ,,by ,,rev4 ,w4,f4 ,,slocum4 ,we may remember at the outset that in this matter of the education of the ,negro we are treating a question which must be considered1 to a certain extent1 ethnically4 ,we are dealing with a people with race peculiarities3 but it seems to me that it is very useless to ask whether we are training an inferior stock4 ,there was a time when the ,anglo-,saxon stock was far inferior #if to its present condition4 ,we ourselves are not enough removed from heathenism and barbarism to become very pharisaical4 ,here is a race with its idiosyncrasies1 and its peculiar latent possibilities1 which we cannot know until ,christian education has unfolded them through many years4 ,we ought not to wonder that in many respects this people is yet in its moral and intellectual infancy2 but who dares say that it has not a future before it1 with its statesmen1 its poets1 its painters1 its men of letters2 that it is not to have its own peculiar literature1 its art1 and even its own characteristic religious expression1 just as marked and important as those produced by any other race8 ,certainly we have as much reason for believing it as that the ,teutonic race of the second century should produce its ,goethe and its ,schiller1 its ,kant and its ,hegel1 its ,luther and its ,melanchthon2 or that the ,frank of the fifth century should develop its ,victor ,hugo1 its ,lamartine1 its ,madam de ,stael2 or that out of the barbarism1 the cannibalism1 the paganism of ,norseman1 ,briton and ,saxon1 there should come ,shakespeare1 ,spencer1 ,macaulay1 ,browning and ,gladstone4 ,and we may not have to wait as long2 for in spite of slavery's binding chain thrice drawn round his soul1 the ,american ,negro has been absorbing during the past from a civilization which has been fitting him somewhat for the large ,christian movement of the present4 ,we are working for a people which in all probability will form at least one-eighth of our whole population2 and we have the problem of lifting them as a race up into ,christian enlightenment4 ,the dark skin is growing darker4 ,there will be less and less of intermixture of blood between the two races4 ,hence all study of this educational question must have in view the large moral and intellectual enterprise of dealing with a race as a race4 ,i believe that there is nothing in all history to compare with this opportunity which has come to our very doors4 ,here is a nation in our land and with it every perplexity1 every difficulty1 every embarrassment1 and also every encouragement1 every hope1 and every inspiration for work1 that can appeal to any foreign missionary4 ,here is this ,god-given task laid at our very thresholds and with all the sentiments of patriotism and ,christian devotion urging us to our large privilege4 ,what the race needs now is right leadership1 and for many years to come we are to equip men and women religiously and intellectually1 who1 in home1 in church1 in social and business life1 will be moral and social leaders4 ,and by this power of leadership ,i mean something far other than those foolish conceits which have taken possession of a few who have touched only the surface of the new life that is coming to this people4 ,i have rather in mind leaders who shall have that moral and intellectual fitness which produces reverence1 earnestness and humility1 leaders who can draw their people away from their foolishness1 weakness and self-consciousness into the larger life that is possible for them4 ,without a #ig doubt1 what is needed is true leaders1 and ,i wish to show where these leaders are now demanded4 ,before the war1 the ,south knew nothing of the benefits of public schools1 and the private school was in harmony with its social and political conceptions2 but of late1 and especially during the last decade1 a remarkable change has taken place which is doing as much to affect the whole ,southern problem as anything that has occurred there during half a century4 ,it is a movement in the ,south1 which1 however imperfectly it has been developed as yet1 has come to remain1 and will ultimately affect every institution1 social1 political and religious1 in our section of the country4 ,it is now being recognized in every ,southern ,state that free government is based upon a public common-school system4 ,it has taken two decades to incorporate this public school policy upon ,southern institutions1 but it has now the evidence of permanency and it is offering to ,christian philanthropy an unparalleled opportunity1 such as ,god seldom gives to any people1 and one which should rally the churches as never before in support of the great enterprises of the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,there has been forced upon the ,new ,south the conclusion that the best way to increase its wealth is to increase the number of educated1 intelligent producers1 and with this conclusion it realizes that it cannot afford to let two million colored children grow up in hopeless illiteracy4 ,it perceives that its very institutions will be imperiled by such a condition4 ,i have through personal interviews with leading educators in a recent trip through the ,south1 by correspondence and by a careful examination of documents and reports from nearly all the ,southern ,states1 undertaken to find just what is being done at the present time in the public colored schools of the ,south4 ,the significance of this public school movement will be understood when it is remembered that the acceptance of the idea that the constitution of a free ,state rests on universal education1 marks a great change in theory2 that this has come against the opinions of the old ,bourbon party1 which never forgets1 and1 it is to be feared1 never learns2 whose political economy is represented by the expression1 keep the negro down2 which regards his enfranchisment as a political outrage and his education as a mistake and a failure2 that it has risen in the face of the poverty of the ,south and in the midst of its most intense prejudices4 ,for when the new educational movement began1 the property and a large part of the intelligence belonged to the opponents of the new educational policy1 but now1 in the words of a prominent ,southern gentleman3 ,the conviction has become very deep that in the altered condition of our people the only hope left us is to do all that can be done towards elevating the masses irrespective of race4 ,this certainly represents a tremendous transformation4 ,without stopping to trace the causes that produced it1 or even the large place the ,american ,missionary ,association work has in it1 let me simply quote from #ih a ,southern ,christian man1 whose sympathies are full of prejudice against the ,north1 but who has wakened with the awakening of the ,new ,south4 ,writing of the educational movement1 in a recent book1 he says3 ,not a few of the best men and women of the ,north have come to teach in these institutions for colored youth3 their motives and their work have not always been understood1 but the ,great ,day will make manifest how they have been constrained by the love of ,christ1 to spend years in work which has had many discouragements4 7',the ,new ,south' by ,j4,c4,c4 ,newton47 ,a few statistics may give some general idea of the extent of this movement4 ,the ,state of ,alabama has #ajd1aej colored pupils enrolled in the public schools4 ,it pays an average of #be4ig per month to nearly #b1jjj colored teachers1 and expends altogether #aih1bba upon these colored schools4 ,georgia has #di per cent4 of its negro school population enrolled2 that is1 #aai1bdh4 ,in #ahga1 this ,state had #f1ffd only in all public and private colored schools4 ,its teachers of this race now number #b1bgb4 #dj1iji colored children are enrolled in ,louisiana1 with #fgb negro teachers1 who receive an average of #bc4gc per month4 ,mississippi had last year #aed1dcj colored scholars4 ,it employed #c1abd colored teachers who receive an average of #bh4gc per month4 ,north ,carolina enrolled1 in #ahhf1 #aag1efb colored pupils1 employed #b1jaf teachers of the same race1 paying them about the same as its white teachers1 #bc4ch per month4 ,the colored school population of ,tennessee numbers #aeh1dej1 of whom #hd1fbd are enrolled in her #a1efc common schools1 which are taught by #a1fba teachers of the same nationality4 ,a county superintendent voluntarily adds3 ,i should do our colored teachers an injustice not to speak of them4 ,most of them are earnest1 zealous workers1 doing all in their power for their race4 ,turning now to ,texas we find that this ,state has nearly doubled its enrollment of colored pupils in three years1 which now number #fb1jdj1 with #a1fif licensed colored teachers who receive on an average1 #da4gc per month4 ,virginia has #aaa1aad out of a school population of #bfe1bdi with #a1gcd colored teachers who receive #bh4fe per month4 ,that is1 in eight representative ,states there are eight hundred thousand colored pupils who are now being trained by over fifteen thousand teachers of the same race4 ,now the simple but grave question that every ,christian patriot ought to ask himself is1 ,what kind of teachers are these1 and where are they to come from in the future8 ,i asked that question of a gentleman who of all others ought to be able to answer it correctly and he replied1 ,nine-tenths of these teachers come from the missionary schools1 and of these nine-tenths1 more than one-half come from the institutions of the ,american ,missionary ,association4 ,now we can understand the truthfulness of the testimony of the ,rev4 ,j4,l4,m4 ,curry1 ,d4,d41 the distinguished agent of the ,peabody ,fund1 who says3 ,the most that #ii has been done at the ,south for the education of the negroes has been done by the ,congregationalists4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association and those allied to it have been the chief agency1 so far as benevolent effort is concerned1 in diffusing right notions of religion1 and in carrying education to the darkened mind of the negro4 ,here is the large door that ,god has opened for us1 and through which we are reaching this people1 and in a still larger degree may carry the truths of the ,kingdom of ,god to them4 ,what they need most of all is light4 ,give them that and the question of rights will take care of itself4 ,when ,i was in ,new ,orleans last ,may1 ,president ,hitchcock1 of ,straight ,university1 pointed out to me in his office a pile of letters1 which1 he said1 were applications for teachers for these public schools1 and those which he showed me represented the number of applications which he was not able to fill4 ,and yet he is compelled every term to turn away scores of young men and young women seeking to fit themselves for just this work1 because there is not room for them and because there are not funds to care for them4 ,as to this new movement in the ,south1 ,i do not conclude that more than the first step has been taken1 exceedingly important as that step is4 ,many of the schools as yet are in a wretched condition4 ,the buildings in the rural districts are small and rudely built1 and many of them are positively unfit to be used as school houses4 ,there are neither maps1 nor charts or other appliances for the teacher's use in his work1 and in fact everything about these school houses is of the most primitive type4 ,the school year often does not exceed four months1 and many of these teachers are altogether unfit for their tasks4 ,are we to think the time has come to withhold our support and our prayers from this great work8 ,was there ever such an opportunity offered to any land as this which is presented to the ,christian philanthropy of our own8 ,i might tell of the needs of the cabin home life as ,i have seen them in these ,states1 how the scholars from ,christian schools are the leaven that is slowly transforming this1 the greatest of all human institutions2 how while from one-quarter to one-half of the colored population is progressing1 gaining in education1 property and character1 there is another large part of the race that is either stationary or sinking into more miserable conditions4 ,are we seeking for paganism to battle with8 ,here it is in our own proud land4 ,do we want the opportunity of ,christianizing a nation8 ,here it is2 and with possibilities just as marked as those of any people that ever ascended the scale of intelligence and ,christian morality4 ,the problem of the ,new ,south is not merely one of successful railroads1 of busy factories or of paying plantations1 but much more is it one of upright1 wise1 ,christian manhood and womanhood4 ,this is the work to which we are most truly called of the ,eternal ,father4 #ajj ,nobly has the ,american ,missionary ,association entered into these labors2 but believe me1 there is a larger work before it than it has yet accomplished4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,south4 ,,letter ,,from ,,an ,,evangelist4 ,after my return from ,england for another winter's service in ,gospel work among the people of the ,south1 ,i began at ,,washington1 ,d4,c4 ,i had promised ,rev4 ,g4,w4 ,moore last winter1 before sailing for my home in ,england1 to assist him in special religious effort4 ,from the very commencement of the meetings a good spirit was manifest1 which deepened day by day until forty or more persons professed faith in ,christ1 young and old being reached by the power of the gospel4 ,one man sixty-one years of age surrendered to the overtures of ,god's love and received ,christ as his ,saviour4 ,another of seventy-five years was pointed out to me as a hardened sinner4 ,when approached he was full of self and reason1 ,i don't believe in mourner's benches and such like2 do you think my going there will make me a ,christian or do me any good8 ,no1 but it will show the people you are intending to make a start for ,heaven1 and it will enlist their sympathy and prayers1 ,i replied4 ,finally he knelt with me in the aisle with his head bowed on the end of the seat while ,i prayed4 ,soon the big tears were dropping from his eyes and he went home that night under conviction4 ,the following night he returned4 ,he was again prayed for1 but went away undecided4 ,the next night as soon as inquirers were given an opportunity to present themselves for prayers he was the first to respond1 and the sinful man of seventy-five years had yielded his heart to ,christ1 and could sing from his heart ,happy day1 when ,jesus washed my sins away4 ,his wife1 who was present1 rushed forward1 and tears of joy ran down their cheeks4 ,scarcely a dry eye was to be seen1 while above all there was joy in ,heaven over another sinner saved4 ,deacon ,r4 came to me afterwards and said1 ,why1 did you ever see what a change in the man in three days1 and at last how he 'caved in4' ,ten persons made profession of their faith1 in ,january4 ,two of these were teachers in the public schools4 ,there were four conversions in one family4 ,since these meetings1 many extra services have been held1 with fruitful results4 ,there are family altars where none before existed4 ,the work in ,washington under ,mr4 ,moore is very hopeful4 ,my next point was ,,selma1 ,,ala4 which ,i entered full of hopes as to successful meetings1 and was not disappointed4 #aja ,during my stay there1 lasting three weeks1 sixty professed to be converted4 ,most of these1 through the efforts of ,rev4 ,c4,b4 ,curtis and his wife1 were formed into a ,children's ,band1 while others joined the churches4 ,this is a most important feature in pastoral work1 where the majority of the converts are children4 ,they need to have something that will help them in their spiritual and new life and which may be instrumental in preserving them from temptations1 snares and pitfalls1 laid to entrap them by the enemy of their souls4 ,i never before realized how easily people are led away by false teachers1 nor saw so manifestly brought out the fulfillment of the ,scriptures1 #b ,pet4 ii1 #a ,but there were false prophets among the people1 even as there shall be false teachers among you1 who privily shall bring in damnable heresies1 even denying the ,lord that bought them1 and bring upon themselves swift destruction4 ,and many shall follow their pernicious ways2 by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of4 ,a man calling himself a prophet and a faith doctor had been for some time experimenting upon people1 both white and black1 and professed to cure them of all their ailments4 ,he had been holding meetings in a cottage weekly1 and had gathered many followers1 who were1 alas1 for the most part professing ,christians4 ,he announced that on the following ,sunday he would hold the passover feast1 burn the ,bible1 and1 in plain words1 would do wonders1 the like of which had not been heard of for years4 ,accordingly1 on ,sunday morning1 with a few of his followers1 he came to the house of a ,negro1 and during the ceremony commanded a white woman to place her head on the table and offer herself as a sacrifice4 ,she refused1 upon which a ,negro woman laid her head upon the table4 ,he immediately raised an old cavalry sword and1 with one blow1 nearly severed her head from her body1 and then commanded that they should drag her out at once and put her with her feet towards the ,east and she will rise after three days4 ,soon there was a cry of murder raised2 the false prophet was arrested after a struggle1 and he1 with a number of his followers1 was safely lodged in the penitentiary1 where it is to be hoped he will at least be kept from cutting off any more women's heads4 ,oh1 how great the need of faithful men to lift up their voices like a trumpet1 and spare them not1 and show to these needy people1 so religiously inclined1 the way of truth6 ,,talladega ,,college was the next place visited4 ,beginning the ,new ,year1 which is usually the week of prayer1 for two weeks the old1 old story was told on every night among the resident students and scholars4 ,at other times1 services would be held in the ,cassidy school in the morning1 or in the afternoon1 as school duties would permit4 ,the ,theological class1 as well as the teachers and faculty1 interested themselves greatly in seeking to win the unsaved to ,jesus4 ,following out the teaching of the ,new ,testament1 the students #ajb went out two and two in the surrounding neighborhood1 calling at the homes of the people1 conversing and praying in the family4 ,they often returned with great joy to tell of the success and kindness they had met wherever they went4 ,i am thankful to our blessed ,lord to be able to report that not only forty or more of the young people were converted but also that professing ,christians were strengthened in faith1 all promising to do what ,god had required of them and to go to their respective homes1 some of them hundreds of miles away1 to make known a ,saviour's love and to carry light as far as possible in the surrounding darkness4 ,while here the ,macedonian cry was heard from ,,jenifer4 ,i went there for a brief service4 ,the first night the church was full1 although the weather was stormy4 ,the spirit of ,god brooded over the meeting and five came forward for prayer4 ,the next night still was unpleasant1 yet some of the congregation came several miles1 and at the close eleven inquirers asked for prayers4 ,a brother in the congregation rose1 and1 in pleading terms1 his voice faltering1 begged1 ,oh1 brodder1 please do stop wid us2 see de mourners2 see de work de ,lord is doing2 please you brodder don't go away and leab us4 ,after such heartfelt words ,i could but stay all the week1 when sixteen professed to have accepted ,christ1 or1 as they put it1 to have found religion4 ,miss ,smith1 at her home for motherless girls1 is doing a noble work here4 ,rev4 ,j4,b4 ,grant is highly respected by all in the village and has a good name1 which is worth more than great riches4 ,,ironaton was the next place visited4 ,it was exceedingly muddy and dark1 yet the people came out well4 ,at the close of the first meeting the congregation arose en masse and asked that ,i would remain a day longer1 which ,i did4 ,,marion1 ,,ala4 ,i went to ,marion with some doubts upon my mind as to the results4 ,the first evening after my arrival ,i was very sick and threatened with a severe attack of chills and fever1 but ,i was helped to strength enough to preach with difficulty4 ,twenty-five inquirers asked for prayers4 ,some that night became new creatures in ,christ ,jesus1 and every night as the meetings progressed the interest deepened and spread1 until other churches were reached by the influence and their services given up that their members might come to our church and share in the work and blessing4 ,every night large numbers of seekers came to ,christ4 ,on one night twelve expressed their faith in a new life4 ,among the many inquirers was one who for twelve years had been an anxiety to her friends on account of her state of mind1 and her conversion caused great joy in the church4 ,short morning meetings were held in the various schools in the town1 and in a town-school seventeen seekers found the ,lord ,jesus precious to #ajc their souls4 ,up to this time1 during two weeks1 more than one hundred profess to have been converted4 ,i am happy to report that now1 with the exception of two or three of the students1 all in the new ,a4,m4,a4 school have been reached by the gospel and are rejoicing that ,god's love has been shed abroad in their hearts4 ,this blessing can be traced in a great measure to the faithful ,scriptural teaching which ,rev4 ,a4,w4 ,curtis and his devoted wife had been giving previous to my coming among them1 prayer meetings having been held in the church for some time beforehand1 and women's meetings at the pastor's home1 led by ,mrs4 ,curtis1 thus preparing the way for the nightly preaching of the gospel4 ,i go next to ,mobile4 ,,james ,,wharton1 ,evangelist4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,chinese4 ,,results ,,that ,,elude ,,the ,,statistician4 ,,by ,,rev4 ,c4,t4 ,,weitzel4 ,there are some effects which cannot be put into statistics4 ,a boy's progress in a study is but imperfectly declared by the monthly report or the examination stand4 ,much of the work accomplished in a ,chinese mission school1 is impossible to tabulate4 ,like the marvelous clearness of the atmosphere in ,santa ,barbara on a bright morning after a night of rain1 it quite eludes the statistician4 ,but effects may be felt1 though we cannot represent them by figures4 ,go with me some evening through the ,chinese quarter of our city2 note the faces of the loungers in every door-way and at every corner4 ,watch the expression1 or the want of expression1 in these stolid1 brutal1 repulsive faces of opium-smokers and gamblers4 ,then step over with me to the ,chinese mission-house two squares away4 ,before you enter1 look in through the half-open door and take a survey of the scene within4 ,the room is well-lighted1 and contains1 among other things1 two long tables1 a dozen benches1 a cabinet organ1 and a few chairs4 ,the walls are bright with ,scripture texts and illustrations from sacred history4 ,about fifteen young ,chinamen are seated at the tables1 all reading and studying aloud in true ,chinese fashion4 ,just as you enter the teacher1 touches the bell4 ,books are closed and all take seats on the benches in front of the organ4 ,a ,chinese evangelist is present1 and while he makes an impassioned address1 accompanied by most expressive gestures1 you are free to study the faces upturned to listen4 ,what a contrast to the faces you have just left in ,chinatown1 idly staring at the passer-by1 or1 vacant of all interest1 staring at nothing6 ,at a glance you perceive effects which must be seen to be appreciated4 ,you feel that not only is the whole atmosphere of this place essentially different #ajd from that of the ,chinese quarter1 but there is also an essential difference between those who frequent the one and the other4 ,socially1 intellectually1 spiritually1 the ,chinese mission-school does its beneficent work4 ,it must be borne in mind that the ,chinaman in ,california is away from home4 ,he is exposed to all the temptations of a stranger in a strange land1 removed from the restraining influences of a community where one is known4 ,subject an equal number of men of any other nation to this severe test1 and ,i doubt much if they would bear it as well4 ,the mission school serves the purpose of a strong social support4 ,so far as possible it takes the place of a home4 ,it practically separates its attendants into a community by itself4 ,it does much to keep them from contact with their vicious countrymen in ,chinatown4 ,it does much to bring them into contact with those whose influence upon them will be good4 ,it does much to furnish a healthy social atmosphere in which to pass the hours of the afternoon and evening1 which every ,chinese servant is at liberty to spend as he will4 ,intellectually the work in the ,chinese missions is already far beyond the elementary stage1 and is growing more virile every year4 ,but everything is made but the means to the spiritual end4 ,not for an hour is this lost sight of4 ,the whole drift of the teaching1 the songs1 the pictures1 the ,scripture text1 is to make known ,christ4 ,every evening's lesson ends with worship4 ,for a month or more the ,chinese preacher to whom ,i have referred1 has held evangelistic services in the ,santa ,barbara mission4 ,to-day he leaves for points farther south to do the same work elsewhere4 ,in no keep her place in the gang from morn till eve1 under the burden of a heavy task1 or under the stimulus or the fear of a cruel lash4 ,she was a picker of cotton4 ,she labored at the sugar mill and in the tobacco factory4 ,when1 through weariness or sickness1 she had fallen behind her allotted task1 then came1 as punishment1 the fearful stripes upon her shrinking1 lacerated flesh4 ,her home life was of the most degrading nature4 ,she lived in the rudest huts1 and partook of the coarsest food1 and dressed in the scantiest garb1 and slept1 in multitudinous cabins1 upon the hardest boards6 ,there was no sanctity of family1 no binding tie of marriage1 none of the fine felicities and the endearing affections of home4 ,few of these things were the lot of the ,southern black woman4 ,instead1 thereof1 a gross barbarism1 which tended to blunt the tender sensibilities1 to obliterate feminine delicacy and womanly shame1 came down as her heritage from generation to generation2 and it seems a miracle of providence and grace that1 notwithstanding these terrible circumstances1 so much struggling virtue lingered amid the rude cabins1 that so much womanly worth and sweetness remained1 as slaveholders themselves have borne witness to4 ,freed1 legally1 she has been2 but the act of emancipation had no talismanic influence to reach to and alter and transform her degrading social life4 ,the truth is1 ',emancipation ,day' found her a prostrate and degraded being2 and1 although it has brought numerous advantages to her sons1 it has produced but the simplest changes in her social and domestic condition4 ,she is still the crude1 rude1 ignorant mother4 ,remote from cities1 the dweller still in the old plantation hut1 neighboring to the sulky1 disaffected master-class1 who still think her freedom was a personal robbery of themselves1 none of the 'fair humanities' have visited her humble home4 ,the light of knowledge has not fallen upon her eyes4 ,the fine domesticities which give the charm to family life1 and which1 by the refinement and delicacy of womanhood1 preserve the civilization of nations1 have not come to her4 ,she has still the rude1 coarse labor of men4 ,with her rude husband1 she still shares the hard service of a field-hand4 ,her house1 which shelters1 perhaps1 some six or eight children1 embraces but two rooms4 ,her furniture is of the rudest kind4 ,the clothing of the household is scant and of the coarsest material2 has oft-times the garniture of rags1 and for herself and offspring is marked1 not seldom1 by the absense #ajf of both hats and shoes4 ,she has rarely been taught to sew1 and the field-labor of slavery times has kept her ignorant of the habitudes of neatness and the requirements of order4 ,indeed1 coarse food1 coarse clothes1 coarse living1 coarse manners1 coarse companions1 coarse surroundings1 coarse neighbors1 both white and black1 yea1 everything coarse1 down to the coarse1 ignorant1 senseless religion1 which excites her sensibilities and starts her passions1 go to make up the life of the masses of black women in the hamlets and villages of the ,south4 ,this is the state of black womanhood4 ,and now look at the vastness of this degradation4 ,if ,i had been speaking of the population of a city1 or town1 or even a village1 the tale would be a sad and melancholy one4 ,but ,i have brought before you the condition of millions of women4 ,and when you think that the masses of these women live in the rural districts2 that they grow up in rudeness and ignorance2 that their former masters are using few means to break up their hereditary degradation1 you can easily take in the pitiful condition of this population and forecast the inevitable future to multitudes of females1 unless a mighty special effort is made for the improvement of the black womanhood of the ,south4 ,i am anxious for a permanent and uplifting civilization to be engrafted on the ,negro race in this land4 ,and this can only be secured through the womanhood of a race4 ,if you want the civilization of a people to reach the very best elements of their being1 and then1 having reached them1 there to abide as an indigenous principle1 you must imbue the womanhood of that people with all its elements and qualities4 ,any movement which passes by the female sex is an ephemeral thing4 ,without them1 no true nationality1 patriotism1 religion1 cultivation1 family life1 or true social status1 is a possibility4 ,in this matter it takes two to make one--mankind is a duality4 ,the male may bring1 as an exotic1 a foreign graft1 say1 of civilization1 to a new people4 ,but what then6 ,can a graft live or thrive of itself8 ,by no manner of means4 ,it must get vitality from the stock into which it is put2 and it is the women who give the sap to every human organization which thrives and flourishes on earth4 ,i plead1 therefore1 for the establishment of at least one large ',industrial school' in every ,southern ,state for the black girls of the ,south4 ,i ask for the establishment of schools which may serve specially the home life of the rising womanhood of my race4 ,i want boarding schools for the industrial training of one hundred and fifty or two hundred of the poorest girls1 of the ages of twelve to eighteen years4 ,i wish the intellectual training to be limited to reading1 writing1 arithmetic and geography4 ,i would have these girls taught to do accurately all domestic work1 such as sweeping floors1 dusting rooms1 scrubbing1 bed-making1 washing and ironing1 sewing1 mending and knitting4 #ajg ,i would have the trades of dress-making1 millinery1 straw-plating1 tailoring for men1 and such like1 taught them4 ,the art of cooking should be made a specialty1 and every girl should be instructed in it4 ,in connection with these schools1 garden plats should be cultivated1 and every girl should be required daily1 to spend at least an hour in learning the cultivation of small fruits1 vegetables and flowers4 ,it is hardly possible to exaggerate either the personal1 family or society influence which would flow from these schools4 ,every class1 yea1 every girl in an out-going class1 would be a missionary of thrift1 industry1 common-sense1 and practicality4 ,they would go forth1 year by year1 a leavening power into the houses1 towns and villages of the ,southern black population2 girls fit to be the wives of the honest peasantry of the ,south1 the worthy matrons of their numerous households4 ,i am looking after the domestic training of the masses2 for the raising up of women meet to be the helpers of poor men1 the rank and file of black society1 all through the rural districts of the ,south4 ,a true civilization can only be attained when the life of woman is reached1 her whole being permeated by noble ideas1 her fine taste enriched by culture1 her tendencies to the beautiful gratified and developed1 her singular and delicate nature lifted up to its full capacity1 and then1 when all these qualities are fully matured1 cultivated and sanctified1 all their sacred influences shall circle around ten thousand firesides1 and the cabins of the humblest freedmen shall become the homes of ,christian refinement through the influence of the uplifted and cultivated black woman of the ,south4 ,the above appeal is in the line of our ,american ,missionary ,association work4 ,while we have higher schools and institutions for more thorough education1 which these ,negro women need as much as any women in the world1 we are increasingly developing this idea which ,dr4 ,crummell eloquently pleads4 ,we remind our friends and those ,christian women who are interested in the uplifting of ,negro womanhood1 that the ,american ,missionary ,association1 the ordained agency of the ,congregational ,churches for this work1 could do much more of it if the means were forthcoming4 ,the marked success of the domestic training in our schools at ,tougaloo1 little women laboring with needles and trying to set the troublesome stitches straight and even1 to keep the thread from tangling and the seam clean4 ,the results are far from perfection1 but they are encouraging4 ,some of the children wear thimbles1 and some set them upon their desks and wiggle the needle through without their aid4 ,here is a child so tiny that no thimble in the box will serve her4 ,she has a delicate face1 with big brown eyes1 and her fingers are the slenderest of appendages to her atoms of hands4 ,her sister1 a year or so older1 has a round1 chubby face1 with plump1 dimpled1 brown hands1 but these fat fingers also must grow to the smallest thimble4 ,here is a quiet1 modest little girl whose five baptismal names1 ,cynthia ,ann ,finetta ,bloomfield ,celeste1 furnish her nothing prettier for every day use than ,lusty4 ,she could not thread a needle or tie a knot when she joined the ,hope ,band1 and the second year she wore one of the smallest thimbles with a bit of cloth inside for chinking to keep it on4 ,here ,susie's sympathies are drawn out towards a thin1 nervous-looking little ,frances1 who has a hand and foot crippled4 ,she walks painfully along to her place and holds her work at a disadvantage in the poor little cramped left hand1 but she likes to be there with the others4 ,most of the heads are covered with little tight braids1 on some heads standing at every angle1 on some laid smoothly down1 one braid tied to another4 ,a few have their curly hair cropped close1 and here is a little girl with a bushy mass overshadowing her lively face4 ,she takes but a stitch or two until she goes up to the front and holds her work out for her teacher's inspection4 ,some time elapses before that lady can notice it and say1 ,that is pretty good1 ,lena2 now go right on carefully4 ,lena returns slowly to her place1 takes a stitch or two more and repeats the performance4 ,when will the work be completed8 ,o no1 that is the way she used to do1 but now-- ,a middle-sized ,topsy comes pushing rudely forward1 tossing her head and whispering disagreeable things to those she has to pass1 and ,susy hopes she will not be brought into any closer relations with her1 when she happens to see her tenderly fondling a broken-armed1 broken-legged dollie1 while her work is being adjusted1 and thinks somewhat better of her4 ,there are several ,lilies and ,roses in this growing garden4 ,the lilies are not white and the roses are not red1 but more attractive and interesting to their teacher's eyes than the black pansies the flower gardeners #aji labored so long to produce4 ,their teacher is fond of flowers and has her windows full1 even in winter1 but she does not smile upon them with such a heartful of affection as upon these1 nor can those bask in the light of her merry face more freely4 ,as her short1 round figure moves down the aisle and back1 and ,susie gets a good look at her1 she says to herself1 ,why surely this is ,mrs4 ,santa ,claus6 ,how glad ,i am6 and it is not a strange conclusion1 for her figure and expression are like the poet's description of dear ,saint ,nick4 ,here is a girl in one of the side seats a good deal taller than her teacher4 ,through the long1 bright1 warm summer she works in the cotton and the corn1 alongside of father1 brothers1 uncles1 men and women1 boys and girls4 ,her hands are enlarged and roughened with toil1 but she is taking pains to learn how to do this useful indoor work skillfully too4 ,there is a goodly company of these larger girls1 but ,susie does not feel any more afraid of them1 nor of the middle-sized bears and the wee tiny1 small bears than did little ,silverhair in the nursery tale4 ,she doubts1 however1 if these largest ones have not laid aside dollies1 and thinks she must look among the leaster ones for the little step-mother who will respect her own little ,fay-mother's request to take good care of her4 ,but when the sewing-lesson is ended and she notices one and another bring to light a little dollie-daughter to hug in her arms as she walks homeward1 and sees the sociable interest of all the rest1 she feels no further doubt about the mother-love in all these little ,southern bosoms and resigns all care as to which one shall be hers1 leaving the whole question to ,mrs4 ,santa ,claus4 ,perhaps some day we may call upon her when she is fully domesticated in her new home4 ,there will not be many comforts and conveniences in that home4 ,possibly when we ask for ,susie1 her mamma will draw a little old box from under the head of her bed1 as once when ,i called upon one of these little girls and asked her if she had a doll4 ,it had lost some of its limbs and it was dressed in odds and ends1 tacked together by the untaught little mother1 but when ,i set the dollie on my knee and pretended to drink tea out of one of the tiny toy cups set forth from the same treasure-box1 you could not find a more hilarious little mamma anywhere1 though
