,missionary ,association1 which is the authorized and recognized servant of the ,congregational ,churches1 reporting to them from the fields to which it is sent in their name1 not unfrequently meets the fact that schools and churches in the ,south are appealing for support to those who hold us responsible for mission work in the ,south4 ,thus many in the ,north from time to time1 are contributing to schools or perhaps to churches there1 under the impression that they are thus taking the shortest path to the work which appeals to them4 ,there are many schools1 of one kind and another1 which have been started at the ,south by private parties on a purely independent basis4 ,many of these are carried on for a little time and then are permitted to die out for one reason and another2 and many of them are working not only with a great lack of efficiency in comparison with the ,a4,m4,a4 schools1 but without supervision and without scrutiny4 ,some are located where it has pleased those who located them to reside1 without much reference to relative necessities2 and some are located so unwisely that the ,association has been compelled to decline to take them1 when through fatigue or failure they have been given up4 ,some of them owe their existence to the fact that certain workers were found to be not adapted to the work1 or were uncomfortable under supervision and superintendence4 ,some of them are conducted by those who have signally failed in our schools4 ,their projectors are often skillful in letter-writing and in solicitation of funds for their specific enterprises1 which being purely personal1 have no large and ultimate achievement4 ,those who give cannot know whether the donations are most wisely used1 nor is there any satisfactory method by which contributions can be traced4 ,the ,association1 with its ,superintendent continually in the field1 reporting every fact to the ,secretaries at the office1 who in turn report to the churches1 is certainly much better prepared to direct the gifts of the benevolent in ways that shall not be unwise or irresponsible4 ,as these circulars and letters of appeal are often referred by those who receive them to the ,secretaries1 it is but their duty to say that all funds diverted from our treasury to schools or churches in the ,south1 under no watch and care1 would without doubt go further and help the great work more to which the ,a4,m4,a4 is consecrated1 if they should be sent through the channel which the churches have ordained1 and which has not only this justification for its existence and work1 but also the justification of long experience and success4 ,if the friends of the ,american ,missionary ,association1 upon receiving appeals from colored pastors or people in the ,south1 or from independent schools1 would remember that their own ordained agency can open and supervise as many schools and churches as they will make possible with their contributions1 no doubt less money would be diverted and far greater efficiency secured4 ,schools in the ,north without supervision or superintendence1 are usually inferior4 ,much more are these irresponsible1 unadvised and independent schools in the ,south4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,shall ,,christ ,,or ,,mohammed ,,win ,,africa8 ,ultimately ,christ will1 as we know by the sure word of prophecy2 immediately1 ,mohammed gains most rapidly1 as present facts seem to indicate4 ,the rapid strides of ,mohammedanism in ,africa have been noticed by nearly all recent explorers and travelers1 but the full statement of the fact has been brought forth more vividly in a remarkable book written by a remarkable man4 ,the book is entitled1 ,christianity1 ,islam and the ,negro ,race4 ,the author is ,edward ,w4 ,blyden1 ,,ll4,d41 of whom it is said by a competent witness--and our own personal acquaintance with him confirms the testimony1 so far as we are competent to judge--that he is a great traveler and an accomplished linguist1 equally familiar with ,hebrew and ,arabic1 with ,greek and ,latin1 with five ,european and with several ,african languages1 and1 had he been born a ,european1 might fill and adorn almost any public post4 ,dr4 ,blyden was born a full-blooded ,negro in the ,danish ,island of ,st4 ,thomas1 emigrated in his seventeenth year to ,liberia1 entered an ,american missionary school and rose to the head of it1 became in #ahfb ,professor in the ,college of ,liberia1 and1 two years later1 ,secretary of ,state in the ,african ,republic4 ,in #ahgg1 he represented ,liberia at the ,court of ,st4 ,james1 as ,minister ,plenipotentiary1 and has been abundantly decorated with honorary degrees4 ,dr4 ,blyden's opportunities for knowing the facts are unquestioned1 and his book presents in very striking array the advantages which in some respects ,islam enjoys over ,christianity in the propagation of its faith in ,africa4 ,the discussion has been continued by ,canon ,taylor of ,york1 ,england1 and1 more recently1 in a very clear article in the ,nineteenth ,century1 by ,dean ,r4 ,bosworth ,smith4 ,our space does not permit us either to summarize the facts as to this progress1 nor can we present all the reasons for it4 ,but one of these reasons touches so nearly a point that is of such vital interest to ,american ,christians1 that we feel called upon to state it and emphasize it4 ,we abridge the full statement thus3 ,christianity has labored under the great disadvantage of coming to the ,negro in a foreign garb4 ,its teachers came from a land that first reached the ,negro by capturing him as a slave2 they came to him with the conscious or unconscious air of superiority born of race-prejudice4 ,christianity came to him as the creed1 not of his friends1 his well-wishers1 his kindred1 but of his masters and oppressors4 ,they differed from him in education1 in manners1 in color1 in civilization4 ,mohammedanism1 on the other hand1 reached the ,negro in his own country1 in the midst of his own surroundings4 ,when it had acclimatized itself and taken root in the soil of ,africa1 it was handed on to others1 and then no longer exclusively by ,arab missionaries1 but by men of the ,negro's own race1 his own proclivities1 his own color4 ,the advantages of this method of approach cannot be over-estimated4 ,we care not to enter at all into the question of the value of the two religions nor of the good they may respectively do for poor ,africa4 ,we wish simply to deal with the methods and means1 and with the peoples who may best employ them4 ,we again summarize the language of ,dean ,smith3 ,the very fact that there are millions of ,negroes in ,america and the ,west ,india ,islands1 many of whom are men of cultivation and lead more or less ,christian lives1 is proof positive that ,christianity is welcomed by them4 ,is there not room to hope that many of these men1 returning to their own country1 may be able to present ,christianity to their fellow-countrymen in a shape in which it has never yet been presented1--in which it would be very difficult for ,europeans or ,americans ever to succeed in presenting it--to them1 and may so develop a type of ,christianity and civilization combined which shall be neither ,american nor ,european1 but ,african1 redolent alike of the people and of the soil8 ,this is a point which the ,american ,missionary ,association has frequently urged1 and which it had begun to exemplify by sending colored missionaries to ,western ,africa4 ,the experiment was in many respects satisfactory1 but we realized that a longer training and a more thorough maturing of character were needed in those who had just emerged from the darkness and limitations of slavery4 ,but what greater hope can there be for ,africa than in the training of these millions1 so apt in learning1 so earnestly religious1 and so well qualified to meet as brothers and friends their kindred in the ,dark ,continent6 ,here is a work for ,american ,christians1 full of promise of a glorious harvest4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,vernacular ,,in ,,indian ,,schools4 ,after some considerable delay1 ,commissioner ,atkins has issued revised ,regulations in regard to the teaching of ,indian languages in schools4 ,that our readers may have them in distinct form we append them3 #a4 ,no text books in the vernacular will be allowed in any school where children are placed under contract1 or where the ,government contributes1 in any manner whatever1 to the support of the school2 no oral instruction in the vernacular will be allowed at such schools4 ,the entire curriculum must be in the ,english language4 #b4 ,the vernacular may be used in missionary schools only for oral instruction in morals and religion1 where it is deemed to be an auxiliary to the ,english language in conveying such instruction4 #c4 ,no person other than a native ,indian teacher will be permitted to teach in any ,indian vernacular1 and these native teachers will only be allowed in schools not supported in whole or in part by the ,government1 at remote points1 where there are no ,government or contract schools where the ,english language is taught4 ,these schools under native teachers only1 are allowed to teach in the vernacular with a view of reaching those ,indians who cannot have the advantages of instruction in ,english1 and they must give way to the ,english-teaching schools as soon as they are established where the ,indians can have access to them4 ,in response to a special application for authority to instruct a class of theological students in the vernacular1 at the ,santee ,school1 the ,commissioner says3 ,there is no objection to your educating a limited number of ,indians in the vernacular1 as missionaries1 in some separate building1 entirely apart from the ,santee ,school4 ,this instruction in the vernacular must be conducted entirely separate from the ,english course1 and must not interfere with ,english studies or be considered part of the ordinary course for any other pupils of the school than the limited number agreed upon1 not to exceed thirty1 and all instruction in the vernacular must be conducted at no expense to the ,government4 ,since writing the above1 we have received from ,commissioner ,atkins a copy of rules designed to explain the orders quoted above4 ,we are constrained to say that these explanations will probably not remove the objections that have been widely entertained against the rulings of the ,department4 ,it must be admitted1 however1 that there are difficulties in the way of formulating regulations that in their details shall meet the views of all parties concerned4 ,on the one hand1 there is the aim of ,commissioner ,atkins1 in which we all coincide1 to introduce the ,english language among the ,indians as speedily as possible4 ,on the other hand1 there is the aim of the churches1 in which we are glad to believe the ,commissioner coincides1 to spread the gospel as rapidly as possible among the ,indians4 ,the churches feel that it is a duty they owe to ,god and to those ,indians who cannot understand ,english to teach them in the language in which they were born1 and they believe1 too1 as the result of long experience1 that ,christian schools in the vernacular are among the most important means to that end1 especially as pioneer movements4 ,american ,christians believe1 too1 that they have the right as ,american citizens to use their own methods--tested by experience--without the interference of the ,government2 and we believe they will feel constrained to protest in every legitimate and honorable way against such interference4 ,we hope that the ,department of the ,interior will yet make the needful concessions4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,south4 ,rev4 ,dr4 ,a4,g4 ,haygood1 the author of ,our ,brother in ,black1 and the general administrator of the ,john ,f4 ,slater fund1 was in ,macon a few days ago1 visiting officially ,lewis ,normal ,institute1 which he pronounced an admirable school4 ,the doctor made a thorough inspection of the school1 and expressed himself as greatly pleased with its present management under ,mrs4 ,l4,a4 ,shaw4 ,he remarked that the improvement within the last two years is very noticeable in all departments1 that the teaching is very thoroughly done and the industrial training systematically and efficiently carried on4 ,dr4 ,haygood preached1 ,sunday morning1 at the ,congregational ,church to the edification of all who heard him4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the governor of ,mississippi in his recent message commends our ,institution at ,tougaloo in the following generous terms3 ,the information derived from the ,president and ,board of ,visitors of ,tougaloo ,university is of the most satisfactory character4 ,during the year1 additional school and industrial buildings have been erected1 thus making all the appointments of the ,institution excellent and commodious4 ,the ,university is indebted to a generous-hearted gentleman of ,new ,york1 ,stephen ,ballard1 ,esq41 for the funds necessary for these buildings4 ,the labor of erecting them was performed by the students under the direction of the ,superintendent of ,industries1 thus economizing cost of labor1 and at the same time demonstrating the valuable training of the students4 ,the timely and generous donation of ,mr4 ,ballard serves to carry on under the same roof1 blacksmithing1 wagon-making1 painting1 tinning and carpentry4 ,this ,university not only endeavors to encourage and conduct intelligently farm work of every description1 but to teach and thoroughly instruct the boys in the several industries mentioned1 as well as in the use of the steam-engine1 saw1 etc4 ,the girls1 in addition to the studies prescribed1 are taught practical household duties in all their details4 ,during the year ,rev4 ,g4,s4 ,pope1 who has been ,president of the ,university for a decade1 and who labored faithfully to advance its interests1 was transferred to another field of labor4 ,his place is filled by ,frank ,g4 ,woodworth1 who assumes the ,presidency of the ,institution and who will earnestly strive to advance its interests and sustain its already excellent reputation4 ,this ,university1 by its successful management1 commends itself to your favorable consideration4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the most important gathering of negroes that probably has ever occurred1 was in ,macon1 ,ga41 a few weeks since4 ,five hundred leading ,negro representatives convened to discuss and adopt a thorough plan of ,state organization4 ,a permanent organization was effected and named the ,united ,brotherhood of ,georgia1 the purpose of which is to resist oppression1 wrong and injustice4 ,we note the following resolutions1 which were passed by the convention3 ,resolved1 ,that we1 in convention assembled1 respectfully but earnestly demand of the powers that be1 that the ,negro be given what1 and only what1 he is entitled to4 ,resolved further1 ,that never1 until we are in the fullest enjoyment of our rights at the ballot-box1 will we cease to agitate and work for what justly belongs to us in the shape of suffrage4 ,further resolved1 ,that it shall be the policy of the colored race to vote so as to bring the greatest division to the white voters of this country1 for in this we believe lies the boon of our desire4 ,the last resolution is not entirely plain to us1 and we refrain from comment upon it1 but the convention itself1 the fact of leadership taking shape among the ,negroes1 and the forth-putting of their purposes1 are very significant4 ,when the ,glenn ,bill was born1 and when the ,georgia ,house of ,representatives stood sponsor for its baptism1 we believed that the enemy of righteousness had made a mistake1 and that this particular piece of artillery would kick4 ,they who think to thwart the providences of ,god usually help them forward4 ,christianity has had many a help from its opposers4 ,upon the incidental question of temperance1 the sentiments of the convention were voiced by one of the speakers in these words3 ,the best thing for the ,negro is industry1 temperance1 virtue1 economy1 union and courage4 in the ,south1 confirms the conviction which must have impressed itself on many minds1 that the ,association is a divinely-appointed agency for carrying forward a work delegated to us as a nation4 ,god calls nations as he calls men1 and consecrates them to a special work4 ,rome had a call1 and fulfilled it1 under the ,divine ,providence1 and that call was to work out the idea1 and demonstrate the necessity1 of government1 and to cultivate in the minds of men everywhere regard for the authority of law2 ,greece had her mission1 and it was to teach the value of individual culture1 both physical and intellectual2 the people of ,israel had their call to teach the doctrine of ,god1 of his moral government1 and of the eternal nature of moral law2 and this ,christian nation has its divine call1 and that call arises from the peculiar relation which it sustains to the other races and nations of the earth4 ,for a long time it seemed as if this land was to be given exclusively to the ,english race4 ,the ,dutch who settled here were assimilated and absorbed2 the ,spaniards and ,portuguese found a congenial clime in ,south ,america2 the ,french1 by the progress of events1 were prevented from gaining a foothold in ,new ,england1 and with the sale of so-called ,louisiana--an immense area extending from the ,gulf to ,british ,america1--,france relinquished her last claim to ownership of any part of our domain4 ,the period of history1 from the landing at ,jamestown and ,plymouth to the war of #ahab1 and later1 was the unfolding of events which pointed to the supremacy of the ,english in ,north ,america4 ,our religion was ,protestant and ,english2 our literature took root in ,english forms of thought2 our free institutions were the outcome of principles which had been1 and now are1 influential in ,english politics2 our common law was ,english1 our traditions of liberty were ,english1 and that union of liberty and law which makes us strong1 we inherited from our ,english fathers4 ,so that in #ahbj1 two hundred years after the arrival of the ,mayflower1 we were essentially an ,english nation2 old ,england broken away from old forms and precedents1 the natural expansion of ,england under new forms of government and society4 ,now it would have been pleasant1 to human ways of thinking1 if we could have remained always thus homogeneous4 ,but ,god had a work for us to do4 ,we were not left to sit down amidst the vast resources which the land affords for material prosperity1 and just watch and foster our own growing and expanding life1 but ,god gave us four problems to solve4 ,these four problems came to us from the four quarters of the globe1 the ,indian of ,america on the ,north1 the ,chinaman of ,asia on the ,west1 the descendant of ,africa on the ,south1 and the emigrant of ,europe on the ,east1 who poured1 in great masses1 through our ,eastern gates1 the ,german unbeliever1 the ,irish ,catholic1 the ,mormon convert1 and representatives of every race of ,europe4 ,the ,english race1 which still represents the heart and brain of the nation1 confronts these four problems4 ,the problem on the ,north and ,south we brought on ourselves1 as results on the one hand of our neglect and injustice1 and on the other of our cupidity and cruelty4 ,the troubles that come to us through our ,eastern and ,western ports1 are drawn to us by the attractive influence of our free institutions and our material prosperity4 ,what are we to do with these alien elements8 ,do as ,rome did4 ,when ,rome heard of a hostile nation on her borders1 she conquered it1 attached it to the ,empire1 and made it a new pillar of imperial power4 ,so are we to conquer every element of darkness and attach it to the kingdom of light1 making it an element of strength in our ,american civilization and our ,american ,christianity4 ,the difference in the method is the difference between paganism and ,christianity1 for while ,rome conquered with a sword of steel1 we conquer with the sword of the ,spirit4 ,we conquer by giving gifts unto men1 the four gifts of law1 land1 letters and religion4 ,we have given law to the ,african and the ,european with citizenship and the ballot2 we have given land to the ,african and the ,european1 and1 thanks to ,christian statesmanship1 we will soon give it to the ,indian in severalty2 and to all will we give letters and religion4 ,it is the peculiar glory of this ,association that it deals more directly than any other agency with the gravest and most urgent of these problems1 the education of the colored race1 so that while the ,government gives the ,negro citizenship1 and permits him to own land1 this society undertakes the work of fitting him for the ownership of land and for the responsibility of citizenship4 ,and it is doing this in the genuine way1 through the gospel of ,christ1 and education as the handmaid and helper of the gospel--that helper without which ,christianity would be falsely conceived1 and erroneously applied1 and without which a failure would result in the ethical training of the colored race4 ,the ,association1 by its educational work1 is thus fulfilling the divine purpose in the call made to us as a ,christian nation4 ,the report of the committee also suggests the heroic element in our work4 ,it brings to mind the obstacles and difficulties which we are called upon to overcome4 ,the illiteracy of the colored people is a fact immense in extent and dark in its prophetic significance4 ,your hearts were rejoiced1 ,i know1 by the statements of the changes going on in the education of the colored children in several ,states through free schools4 ,the need of this movement will be appreciated when we remember the figures which bring before us the present illiterate condition of the people4 ,i present the outline of a report made in ,january1 #ahhe1 based on reports of ,albion ,tourgee1 and on articles in the ,north ,american ,review4 ,according to that report1 seventy-three per cent4 of the colored population of the ,south cannot read and write4 ,in the eight ,gulf and ,atlantic ,states1 seventy-eight per cent4 are in the same condition4 ,over two millions of colored people in these eight ,states cannot read and write4 ,but this is not all4 ,we must take into account the rapid increase of the negroes4 ,in three ,states of the ,south they already outnumber the whites4 ,in eight ,states1 they are about one-half the population4 ,in all the ,southern ,states they increase faster than the white population4 ,from #ahgj to #ahhj1 in the eight ,states mentioned above1 they increased thirty-four per cent41 the whites only twenty-seven per cent4 ,the immigration of foreign-born whites will not change the proportionate difference of increase1 as the foreign-born white population has decreased #cj1jjj since the war1 and the immigration of northern-born whites amounts to only a fraction of one per cent4 ,according to the present rate of increase1 the colored race in one hundred years from now will have a population many millions in excess of the whites1 since1 while it will take thirty-five years for the white race to double its numbers1 the blacks will do so every twenty years4 ,in less than twenty-five years from this date1 the colored race in the ,south will outnumber the whites in nearly all the ,states1 and then the world will witness a conflict of races1 the aspiration of the negro against the caste-prejudice of the white1 the end and result of which no man can foresee4 ,these facts all point to the greatness of the work undertaken by this ,association4 ,christian education is the only education for a race having before it such a future4 ,the illiteracy which we deplore must be overcome1 but something more than that2 that change must be provided for1 when the ,negro in large numbers will pass from the quiet and peaceful pursuits of agriculture to be massed together in mine and factory and the work of the mechanic arts1 but something more than that2 intelligence for the burden of citizenship must be given1 but something more than that2 incentives to the accumulation of property and the building of homes for themselves and their families must be encouraged1 but something more than that must be done4 ,if we were simply patriots1 we would educate these people2 if we were only philanthropists1 or wise statesmen1 or political economists1 we would still feel bound to educate them4 ,but we are more than these1 we are ,christians1 and so there is one other thing we must do besides these ,i have mentioned1 something which includes all these and so is greater than they all--and that thing is to make them ,christian4 ,education is a part of the means to be used1 and not the total end and aim4 ,for what is education8 ,not the mere accumulation of knowledge1 nor the mere training of the powers of the mind1 but the building of manhood4 ,you have tempered your ,damascus blade1 but who is going to hold it--the patriot1 or the rebel8 ,you have your educated man with his printing press1 but what is he going to print--the ,police ,gazette or the ,gospel of ,st4 ,john8 ,you have built your college and found your young man1 and trained him up to the very highest point of mental excellence and power1 but what is he going to do with his mind8 ,the mind is only an instrument under the direction of the man4 ,the great thing is the ethical man who is going to use this mind4 ,if there is any thing the ,american people need to learn1 it is that there is one thing greater than talent1 and that is character--the love and regard for righteousness4 ,it is here that this ,association does its work in the genuine way1 regarding education as necessary for the colored race and for all races1 not as an end in itself1 but as an instrument in the hands of a man ethically and ,christianly trained4 ,the gospel must go with the school1 so that we may train not only the hand and the brain1 but also the conscience and the heart4 ,when ,i think of the future of the ,negro race in ,america1 of the possibilities of that race already being revealed1 of the immense political significance of its position to-day1 of the certain increase of its numbers1 of the inevitable collision of races by and by1 unless there be a change in the spirit of the whites1 ,i feel that no education is to be trusted but ,christian education1 an education based on the gospel of ,christ4 ,and to what purpose can any of us1 with better hope of success1 devote our time1 our money1 our labor8 ,let us have more money for this work4 ,i would say no word to depreciate foreign missions1 but is not this after all the work of foreign missions8 ,how will you influence the future of ,china1 photograph album1 ,holy ,bible1 book of mission stories with many pictures in it4 ,i explained the pictures to them and they were all pleased4 ,i also told them that these good books were presented by my kind teachers4 ,i gave the names of these faithful workers of the ,lord and said they were the best friends of the ,chinese1 the reason was that they love ,jesus4 ,i then went on and told them about the true ,god1 and his blessed ,son ,jesus1 who love the whole world4 ,they all kept quiet and listen attentively4 ,besides these1 ,i show them my coal-oil stove1 alarm clock1 thermometer1 etc4 ,these things greatly pleased them4 ,i told them the wonderful arts1 the machineries1 railways and the telegraphs4 ,these news led them spoke out in a loud voice1 ,the people in ,christian land have more wisdom than our ,chinese4 ,i said1 ,god gave this wisdom1 our ,chinese must love the true ,god and forsake the idols1 then ,god will send the ,holy ,spirit to make us wise and happy1 and love to do good4 ,the ,bible says1 ,trust the ,lord and do good4 ,after this1 ,i found opportunity to preach the gospel every day4 ,though ,i could not make them become ,christians yet1 ,i was glad they shew so much interest in receiving the good seeds4 ,nearly every day1 some people came in our little store and asked me to tell them about this new doctrine4 ,during ,march1 ,rev4 ,c4,r4 ,hager paid us a visit4 ,our store was crowded with people4 ,they all came to see him4 ,he preached to them4 ,several of the students had a long talk with him4 ,on the day of my marriage1 my father did not compel me to worship the idols and ancestors4 ,i felt very thankful for the ,lord's help in this matter4 ,my mother used to believe in all kinds of superstitions4 ,if any one in the family was sick1 she would go to a sorcerer and ask for some charms to heal the sick one4 ,i told her that this kind of belief and doing were all wrong4 ,i shew her how to pray the true ,god1 and taught her to say the ,lord's prayer4 ,one day my sister was sick in bed1 and my mother called me home to pray for her4 ,i asked my mother whether she had been to the sorcerer or not4 ,she said she had not4 ,i then opened the ,bible and read the first eleven verses from the fourth chapter of ,matthew4 ,i knelt and prayed1 while my mother and all the rest of the family kept silent4 ,when ,i said the ,lord's prayer at the close1 ,i asked them to follow me1 but they were too bashful to comply4 ,i am glad to say that my sister's health was restored1 and this greatly pleased my mother4 ,during the month of ,march1 the ,chinese worship their ancestors at their respective graves4 ,this kind of worship has two meanings1 one is to repair and decorate the graves1 the other1 to worship with sacrifice1 consisting of already cooked chicken and pork1 and paper which represents money and clothing4 ,my father and relatives1 of course1 follow the same custom4 ,i accompanied them to the graves1 but ,i only helped them in repairing the graves4 ,some of these relatives were school teachers4 ,they spoke scornfully at me for not worshiping4 ,they said1 ,you cannot show honor to your ancestors without kneeling before them4 ,i then said to them1 ,can you tell me the origin of sacrifice8 ,who established it1 and for what purpose8 ,this seemed to strike them like lightning1 for they all stood and had nothing to say4 ,i then said1 let me give you the origin4 ,i told them that after ,god created heaven and earth and all things1 he finally made a man and a woman1 and placed them in ,eden1 the paradise1 and how they sinned against ,god's command by eating the forbidden fruit4 ,this brought death into the world4 ,they were driven out of ,paradise and had to work hard for a livelihood1 but ,god was so merciful that he promised that the seed of the woman shall bruise the head of the serpent2 that is1 he would provide a ,saviour1 by which death could be conquered4 ,god told them that when they sinned again1 they must offer sacrifice and confess their sins1 then ,god would forgive them4 ,from that time on1 the people offer sacrifice4 ,this sacrifice is a type of ,jesus1 who gave his life and died on the cross for all who are willing to believe in him4 ,so ,jesus paid it all1 and after his crucifixion there is no more offering required4 ,that is the reason why the ,christians do not offer sacrifice1 and why ,i do not worship in this manner4 ,for no one deserves our worship but ,god alone4 ,i only honor the ancestors with my heart4 ,i love them just as much as you do yourselves4 ,when they heard this explanation1 they were greatly surprised4 ,then they spoke among themselves by saying1 ,his doctrine is good2 this is all news to us2 our ,confucius books never tell us about the origin of sacrifice4 birthplace was in a very ,superior region1 as for millions of years ,i had dwelt near ,lake ,superior4 ,my superior quality almost defied the arts of man4 ,i first became conscious of existence when being liberated from my copper prison4 ,i was1 as ,i heard men say1 ninety per cent4 pure copper4 ,up to this time ,i had never been disturbed1 but now sounded sharply the click of the hammer upon the cold chisel that rudely separated me from all that had been most closely associated with me4 ,i heard men say that ,i was to be made over2 and ,i was transported far away to a place where ,i was exposed to fierce fires1 and without suffering ,i was made to assume a liquid form4 ,i was then poured into a mold from which ,i came out1 verily1 a new creature4 ,i was very bright and beautiful1 trust4 ,i heard it said that ,i was a tool to assist in civilization1 and ,i soon found myself aiding men in commercial transactions4 ,i had manifold experiences and1 like most useful people1 found that while age increased my usefulness it subdued my glitter4 ,at last1 after many1 many years1 ,i fell into the hands of a ,sabbath-school ,superintendent with a missionary spirit1 and by him was distributed with many of my companions to the children of his ,sabbath-school1 with the injunction to multiply4 ,i fell into the hands of a boy who undertook to help me in a business way which should tend to my rapid increase4 ,at the end of a fixed period ,i and my companions were to be returned to the ,superintendent with our respective gains2 and then1 after relating our experiences1 we were to be sent forth as missionaries to the ,indians4 ,before this1 my aims had been simply to aid in commerce1 with no definite plan before me1 and like all who have no fixed purpose1 ,i drifted here and there and took no special interest in the world4 ,but now ,i was to become a missionary2 ,i was not only to aid in civilization but in advancing ,christianity4 ,my new aim in life made me anxious concerning the boy who was to be my helper4 ,i took the deepest interest in all his plans in regard to me and listened attentively when he bargained with his father for a fourth of a cent's worth of yarn and the use of a needle with which to darn his father's socks4 ,i thought that a boy of sixteen who was willing to increase me by undertaking to darn his father's stockings1 deserved all the aid that ,i could give him4 ,i looked on with interest and admiration1 while he1 with earnest toil1 completed his task4 ,when the task was ended1 ,i found myself increased from one to three cents4 ,this small beginning was in reality the most important of all our transactions and demonstrated that we could work harmoniously together4 ,while he went to the ,st4 ,lawrence for his vacation1 he did not give me a vacation nor wrap me in a napkin1 but left me where ,i grew to four cents4 ,then we invested my whole increase in hickory nuts1 which transaction increased me to fifteen cents4 ,i here discovered that ,i had not only multiplied but had become of a more precious metal4 ,i was now silver4 ,we now invested in peanuts and hickory nuts and ,i was increased from fifteen to thirty cents4 ,the community in which we lived manifested such a fondness for peanuts that we again invested and ,i found myself increased to seventy-five cents4 ,coming in contact with one who mourned over accept the urgent request of a former acquaintance to spend the night with him upon the mountain4 ,during the evening1 ,i chanced to show him the bullet1 saying ,i thought myself quite fortunate in finding it4 ,oh1 said he1 that's nothing4 ,a colored woman after the battle gathered and sold so many that she was able to purchase a cow with the money1 and now that cow supports her family4 ,i left ,chattanooga the nest morning1 and thought no more of the incident for a dozen years4 ,a short time since1 however1 ,i was spending the night in a small village in one of the mountain towns of ,tennessee4 ,at nightfall1 looking out from my hotel1 ,i observed a company of colored people ambling along towards a low wooden meeting-house1 and time hanging heavily on my hands1 ,i decided to join the dusky worshipers4 ,i slipped in1 therefore1 when the meeting was a little under way1 and allowed myself to be ushered up to the front seat1 directly under the eye of an intelligent looking young man who proved to be the preacher for the occasion4 ,after a few opening services1 which embraced the usual variety in ordinary churches1 the minister took for his text the passage1 ,ask1 and ye shall receive1 seek and ye shall find1 knock and it shall be opened unto you4 ,now1 said he1 when he had gotten on well with his introduction1 you must not believe you will surely receive precisely the thing you ask for in just the way you might like it4 ,let me give you an illustration from my personal experience4 ,when a little boy1 ,i lived with my mother on the southern slope of ,lookout great that she was able to purchase a cow with the money they brought4 ,a benevolent gentleman living in ,new ,york at this time soon after secured the ,government buildings on the top of the mountain that had been used for the sick soldiers1 and fitted them up nicely for ,northern teachers1 who opened a boarding-school for white students4 ,i took milk to the institution from our cow1 every morning1 and how ,i wished that ,i might gain admittance to the school and procure an education6 ,one day ,i heard the scholars reciting in concert1 ',ask and ye shall receive1 seek and ye shall find1 knock and it shall be opened unto you4' ,it came over me most powerfully and ,i repeated it again and again4 ,i said it to my mother1 and inquired of her what it meant1 and why it impressed me so1 and an institution of a higher grade4 ,i then went away and pursued a course of study for six years1 teaching during the summer and receiving aid from my mother1 who kept the cow all the while for her own
