brother2 we repeat them to our many friends who enjoyed the personal friendship of our beloved brother ,powell4 ,these friends cannot restore him to us1 as the ,friend restored ,lazarus to his family2 but they can sympathize with us in our great bereavement4 ,it is scarcely three months since our honored president1 ,gov4 ,washburn1 was suddenly taken away1 and we have not yet found his successor2 and now1 ,dr4 ,powell has been removed almost as suddenly1 and we can scarcely hope to find one to take his place4 ,our only consolation is1 that ,god makes no mistakes1 and that1 while men die1 ,his work goes on4 ,the death of ,dr4 ,powell was unexpected1 but its cause lay far back4 ,when only nineteen years of age1 he entered the service of the ,christian ,commission1 and in the malarial regions of the ,south1 the germs of disease were planted in his system4 ,they were the cause of frequent and distressing turns of illness1 while his irrepressible energy never allowed him to take the rest necessary for recovery4 ,the physicians pronounced the immediate cause of his death to be apoplexy1 but most men carrying his burden of ill-health would have yielded long before2 only his immeasurable hopefulness and activity sustained him to the end4 ,rev4 ,james ,powell1 ,d4,d41 was born in ,wales1 ,december #be1 #ahdb4 ,at an early age he came to this country1 and partly by his own exertions and partly by the help of friends whom he had won to himself by his genial nature and evident indications of future usefulness1 he obtained an education1 graduating from ,dartmouth ,college in #ahff1 and from ,andover ,theological ,seminary in #ahfi4 ,he was installed as pastor of the church at ,newburyport in ,november1 #ahfi1 his only pastorate1 and remained there till ,february1 #ahgc4 ,his health being impaired by his incessant labors as pastor1 he was persuaded by his friend1 ,rev4 ,mr4 ,pike1 to aid in introducing the ,jubilee ,singers to the ,english public1 with the further purpose of either remaining abroad to manage the affairs of the ,singers in ,great ,britain1 or of returning and temporarily taking ,mr4 ,pike's place in ,connecticut and ,new ,york1 as ,district ,secretary of the ,association4 ,the latter alternative was finally decided upon1 and ,mr4 ,powell assumed these duties in the latter part of the year #ahgc4 ,a year afterwards1 on the resignation of ,rev4 ,dr4 ,patton from our ,chicago office1 ,mr4 ,powell1 who had shown remarkable gifts as a speaker1 was at once selected as ,district ,secretary of our ,western department4 ,here he remained for nearly ten years1 when some changes were required in our district offices and he was called to ,new ,york as ,assistant ,corresponding ,secretary1 and entrusted with the supervision of the entire collecting field4 ,the work he had done so acceptably and efficiently at the ,west was followed by equally effective services in his wider field at the ,east4 ,in the three years of the recent burden of debt upon the ,association1 the energies of ,dr4 ,powell were called into full play1 and when1 at our last ,annual ,meeting1 we rejoiced in deliverance from debt1 it was felt that the gratifying result was due in a large measure to his eloquence by voice and pen4 ,at that meeting ,dr4 ,powell was elected ,corresponding ,secretary of the ,association4 ,bro4 ,powell was an orator born1 not made4 ,his eloquence was not of the ,websterian sort1 massive and logical1 but rather of that magnetic kind which wins and sways an audience at will1 sometimes to smiles and then to tears1 but always with definite persuasion4 ,he was a brilliant writer as well as speaker4 ,his pen glowed with a special inspiration1 and was prolific as well4 ,the pages of the ,,american ,,missionary1 the columns of the weekly religious press1 the numerous circulars issued from this office and his abundant correspondence1 all bear witness to this4 ,he was a wise man in counsel4 ,the impassioned and imaginative speaker is not usually characterized by a cautious judgment or administrative gifts2 but we have found in this office that when grave questions arose for consideration1 ,dr4 ,powell was remarkably conservative and judicious4 ,but the crowning glory of the man was his bright and genial nature1 and his warm and devoted ,christian character4 ,it was this that won all hearts1 that made him welcome on every platform and in every pulpit1 that bound his friends to him in warmest attachment1 that opened the doors of all homes to him and that leaves the memory of brightness behind him in the offices where he toiled and in his own dear home4 ,his life went out not as the lightning's flash1 that leaves the deeper darkness behind1 nor as the setting sun1 that has the night before and after1 but his departure from life was only the entrance into eternal brightness1 and leaves a radiance behind that will be a perpetual joy and consolation to his friends4 ,he was born on ,christmas day1 and the festivities of another ,christmas day were not wholly past when he died4 ,his birth was a ,christmas gift to earth1 and1 be it said with reverence1 his death was a ,christmas gift to ,heaven1 for through the grace of our ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 and the sanctifying influence of the blessed spirit1 we believe he was made meet to be presented to the ,father1 in whose hands we leave him4 ,a ,,word ,,to ,,our ,,workers ,to lead a people long crushed by oppression away from the degradations of slavery into a true and intelligent freedom1 to teach those who have no inheritance of steady purpose to rise into new habits of thought and feeling1 and away from the heredity of superstitions which were unrelated with morality1 into a faith which really purifies the heart and the life1 is not the work of a year1 nor of fifty years4 ,it means patient continuance in well doing4 ,it means consecration1 responsibility and self-sacrifice on the part of those who take upon themselves and into themselves1 the sins and the sorrows1 and the struggles and failures of those who are to be saved4 ,nothing but a consecration that becomes a passion of the soul in ,christ's love and for ,christ's sake1 and an abiding faith in the triumph of his kingdom of love and righteousness1 will explain the earnestness and labor of the devoted souls in our mission work1 who are ,god's kings and priests ministering to the lowly1 and crowding their days with service for those who have been the victims of the strong1 and who1 now weak and poor1 are despised in their poverty and weakness4 99 99 99 99 99 ,all honor to those who are giving themselves to break down the injustices of a cruel and unchristian caste1 all honor to the noble men and women who are working to rescue millions from the woeful inheritance of centuries1 as well as to save them from the dominion of the sin which is common to man4 ,others may honor ,kings and ,queens and ,princes who have had their greatness thrust upon them1 but we will stand with those who accentuate their reverence for lives consecrated to the good of humanity1 who are afflicted with the sorrows of ,god's poor1 and oppressed with their burdens1 and whose prayers and songs are ,god save the people1 ,their lives may not be chronicled in the pages which tell of those who lived to make others serve them1 but they are shining names upon ,god's ,book of ,life1 and in the day of the coronation of the nobility which ,god sees and records1 their names will stand out like radiant stars in the heavens4 ,one of such was ,,james ,,powell1 whose life was a grand sacrifice of undeviating love for those whose necessities made him feel that he was debtor to them1 until he gave them the price of his life which ,christ had redeemed4 ,subordinating himself to this consecration with incessant desire1 he has left his example which may well be inspiration and strength to all who are working and praying for those who have been trodden under the feet of the strong1 and he has left his influence for tens of thousands4 99 99 99 99 99 ,in the prophecy which foretold ,christ1 centuries before he came it was written1 ,he shall not fail1 nor be discouraged4 ,fellow workers1 it is not the consecration of a year1 nor of a generation1 that is to restore the millions for whom we work to the places where ,god would bring them4 ,the pitiless centuries cannot be redeemed in one day4 ,doubtless the work may seem slow and the time may seem long1 but every good deed counts1 and no prayer is unheard4 ,the good work is not in vain4 ,the progress already made is wonderful4 ,the workers who have consecrated themselves may die in their unfinished work1 but ,god has pledged himself that the work shall go on4 ,his promises and his providences will work together like cogs in a wheel4 ,we shall not fail1 and we need not be discouraged4 ,such lives as that of ,,james ,,powell are not too common in human history1 but they show us how the divine can endue the human with its own power1 and how ,god can make souls great witnesses for ,god4 ,some tell us that the heroic ages have passed away1 but they have not4 ,no6 ,they will last until the world shall be saved1 for the inspirations which come from the spirit of ,god and from the cross of ,christ will live in hearts which will burn to save those who need to be saved4 99 99 99 99 99 ,since the death of ,dr4 ,powell1 we have received numerous letters from all parts of the country expressing sympathy in our great bereavement1 which the writers shared profoundly with us4 ,the admiration and love entertained by the writers1 and uttered in these letters1 toward our beloved brother1 is gratifying to us1 as it is also to his family4 ,in the pressure of duties consequent upon his death and burial1 we have not found time to reply to these letters1 and take this occasion to acknowledge their receipt and to express our heartfelt thankfulness to the writers4 99 99 99 99 99 ,we shall not be able to make the stirring appeals to provide for the exigent demands of our great work which our readers have been wont to recognize as coming from the heart of ,dr4 ,powell1 who had the oversight and burden another department of ,a4,m4,a4 work1 we always knew that we had in him a kind and thoughtful friend1 and one who would cordially co-operate with the other officers in their far-reaching plans for the development of the work1 even though it added to his cares and burdens in gathering the funds necessary to carry out these plans4 ,we who have our work and responsibilities in the field1 no less than those who were in the office with ,dr4 ,powell1 would bear our tribute of love1 and scatter the blossoms of holy memories upon this new-made grave4 99 99 99 99 99 ,two ,state ,associations of unusual interest were held during the month of ,november4 ,the ,central ,south ,association met with the ,trinity ,church1 in ,athens1 ,ala41 ,nov4 #c;d4 ,this ,association includes the churches of ,tennessee and two or three of those in ,alabama4 ,the reports from the churches were very complete4 ,only one church in the ,association was without regular ministerial services1 and that church had recently lost its pastor by death4 ,they are now supplied by a competent and faithful minister4 ,the temperance question was discussed with great enthusiasm4 ,the influence of ,fisk ,university on the right side1 during the recent prohibition battle in ,tennessee1 can scarcely be over-estimated4 ,many expressed the judgment that the argument of the ,southern whites1 that the colored people defeated prohibition1 was not true4 ,one pastor reported that his county went almost solidly against prohibition1 and there was only one colored man in the county1 so far as he knew1 and he was a staunch prohibitionist4 ,some argued that while so many churches and ,women's ,christian ,temperance ,unions and ,young ,men's ,christian ,associations shut out respectable colored people1 and saloons welcomed those who were not respectable1 it would be a difficult task for the better class to induce the more ignorant to vote against those who welcomed them and in favor of those who shut them out4 ,is there not considerable force in their arguments8 ,a young colored man1 who had been a preacher in one of the old churches of the ,south and had become disgusted with its ignorance1 superstition and immorality1 presented his credentials and applied for admission into the ,congregational ,association of the ,state4 ,this action of his is a straw which shows which way the wind of religious thought blows among the intelligent colored people of the ,south4 ,the weather-vane points toward ,congregationalism4 ,an aged pastor1 who had endured ostracism and violence in ,new ,york ,state in the early times1 on account of his anti-slavery opinions1 was present during the meetings of the ,association1 and added greatly to their interest4 ,it was a thrilling sight to him to look upon these colored brethren during their earnest and often eloquent discussions1 and to remember how much he had suffered in their behalf in other days4 ,trinity ,school opened its doors wide and offered generous hospitality to the pastors and delegates4 ,on the whole1 it was one of the best meetings the ,association has ever enjoyed4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,congregational ,association of the ,state of ,georgia met with the church at ,macon1 ,november #ith-#adth4 ,the church and its new pastor1 a son of ,connecticut1 did their utmost to make the meetings pleasant and helpful4 ,the band of earnest ,christian teachers of ,lewis ,normal ,institute1 the ,a4,m4,a4 school at ,macon1 joined hands with the church and pastor in helping to make the sessions of the ,association profitable4 ,here1 too1 as in the ,central ,south ,association1 the temperance question held a prominent place in the discussions4 ,there was not a member of the ,association but was heartily in favor of prohibition4 ,the ,atlanta campaign was on in all its heat and passion1 and beseeching requests were made by the delegates from that city that prayer might be offered for them as they passed through the heat of this battle against legalizing crime4 ,almost every church in the ,association was represented in this meeting and one new church applied for admission4 ,this church stands near the old prison pen of ,andersonville and so the blood of the martyrs proves the seed of the church1 whether they wear the monk's cowl of a ,huss or the ragged blue of our country4 ,the church at ,charleston1 ,s4,c41 reported two missions just established in the destitute parts of that city4 ,all the churches in this ,association assisted by the ,a4,m4,a4 are struggling towards self-support under helpful pressure from that ,society4 ,i am glad to report that the church at ,savannah has taken upon itself the support of its pastor and local expenses for the next year4 ,the churches in this ,association1 although poor and often in serious financial straits themselves1 showed their appreciation of other lines of ,christian work by passing the following resolution3 ,resolved1 ,that in view of the financial embarrassments of the ,home ,missionary ,society1 the pastors of the churches urge upon their people the duty of taking up a collection for the benefit of that ,society4 99 99 99 99 99 ,as illustrating the need of intelligent and decent church services in the ,south1 ,i record the following facts1 which were related to me by those who knew of them personally4 ,a colored preacher of the old-time sort preached on the ,judgment ,day4 ,he held the meeting from evening till well into the night4 ,he arranged with a worthless fellow to hide himself in the woods just outside the church1 with a tremendously big dinner-horn1 with instructions to blow upon it at a certain signal4 ,at the awful hour of midnight1 when1 by entreaty and appeal and frightful figures of speech1 the preacher had worked the people up into a frenzy of excitement and terror1 he exclaimed1 ,listen1 ,i reckon ,i hear ,gabriel getting ready to blow now4 ,de last day am on us1 de judgment am right here1 whar you sinners now8 ,listen4 ,and with bated breath they listened4 ,just then there came a fearful blast on the stillness of the midnight air1 and the scene that followed can better be imagined than described4 ,helter-skelter over the benches and over each other1 the terrified people scrambled for the mourners' bench4 ,the preacher boastfully told afterward1 that dar want scarsely one sinner but what wah effected4 ,the quiet forms of worship in our ,congregational churches1 and the intelligent preaching of the ,a4,m4,a4 ministers1 are fast bringing about a state of things which will drive out such church circuses1 with their ministerial clowns4 ,god speed the day6 99 99 99 99 99 ,during a considerable portion of the last month ,i have been riding double1 as our honored ,secretary1 ,dr4 ,beard1 has been in the saddle with me4 ,his knowledge of the field1 gained through these frequent personal visits1 is of great advantage to the work and highly appreciated by the workers4 ,we jogged together over many miles of country1 comparing notes1 discussing plans and expressing our mutual surprise at the wonderful and far-reaching work which is being accomplished1 and the prophetic glories ,,indians4 ,,what ,,an ,,indian ,,thinks ,,of ,,it4 ,the writer of this letter is ,loafer ,redhorse1 a son-in-law of the ,titon ,chief1 ,swift ,bear1 whose band have colonized as homesteaders along the ,niobrara ,river near the mouth of ,keya ,paha ,river4 ,their colony is one hundred and thirty miles from ,rosebud ,agency1 to which they belong4 ,their settlement we call ,burrell ,station in honor of ,dea4 ,burrell1 of ,oberlin1 ,ohio1 who gave the money to build the school-house and home for the teacher4 ,mr4 ,francis ,frazier1 son of ,pastor ,ehnamani of ,santee1 has now been their teacher two years4 ,loafer ,redhorse is anything but a loafer4 ,he is one of the most industrious men4 ,he is one who would naturally be first in war1 as he says1 and now also is first in following the plow1 and learning the ways of the white man4 ,among other things it is interesting to know what he thinks of prohibiting the use of the ,dakota language4 ,,my ,,friends3 ,let me speak now4 ,i am sad because of one thing which ,i will now speak of4 ,since our school-house 7the ,burrell station school7 was built1 ,i1 with my children1 have attended with a glad heart just as if it were my own4 ,and now ,i hear that it is likely to be closed1 and ,i will speak about that4 ,and this is why ,i have something to say4 ,the scholars who go out from the ,brules to go to school1 come back without knowing anything1 for the reason that they don't teach them anything except to work4 ,that is the reason they don't know anything1 ,i think4 ,and ,i will tell how it was with us under ,indian customs since the time ,i had understanding4 ,then the ,indian tribes were happy4 ,into whatever country was good they roamed just as they pleased4 ,at that time1 although there were many ,indians on all sides1 there was a great country in between full of buffalo4 ,it seemed to be the buffalo's country4 ,and the ,indian people were made happy because of the buffalo4 ,the people would move their camps and pitch their tents again and the buffalo would come right in among their tents with a great noise4 ,then it was that the people had great joy4 ,and there was another thing that the people rejoiced in greatly4 ,i will speak of that also4 ,that was in war4 ,when they went to war and came near the enemies' dwellings and saw the enemy there they would choose out about ten of the bravest young men and dispatch them to kill some of the enemy4 ,then they would draw near to the houses1 and soon though there might be five whose hearts were not able for it1 the others would go on and kill a man at his house4 ,and the great joy that ,i spoke of was thus3 of the five who had killed an enemy but only four of them could take the glory1 but their names would be praised throughout the whole ,indian nation2 they would be glorified and considered as chiefs4 ,but most of all1 he who first killed the enemy he would be the chief4 ,and then when they had returned home even the women would rejoice greatly4 ,they would dance night and day1 all of them4 ,and as ,i1 myself1 was chief1 ,i considered this the very greatest joy4 ,such were our customs4 ,but now from the place ,i now occupy1 ,i look back and remember these things4 ,and though the ,indian people had all of these customs1 ,i know not one of them that made the people prosper or brought life to them4 ,i have not seen that brought life to the people4 ,and thus from where ,i am now1 ,i am always looking to the future4 ,on this account ,i am looking forward4 ,the ,indians have been told the words of the ,grandfather1 7the ,president74 ,and they tell us that by these words the people will prosper4 ,plant2 by that you shall live1 the ,grandfather told them4 ,and now ,i know a little that the ,grandfather spoke the truth4 ,the ,grandfather gives me food for six days1 but even though ,i eat a very little each day1 in three days ,i have eaten it all up4 ,but now ,i have raised corn and though ,i abide here eating nothing else1 by it ,i live4 ,and also to go from my place to where the ,grandfather gives me rations takes one week to go and the same to come back and ,i stay over a few days to rest when there1 and so it altogether covers over three weeks or more4 ,therefore1 though ,i have settled here and desire to busy myself in all the white man's ways that ,i am able1 ,i have not yet become independent4 ,and therefore1 ,i earnestly wish1 if it were possible1 that the ,grandfather would enable us to receive a year's rations at a time1 and then we would make speedy progress in the white man's way4 ,and because of this also1 the children do not advance much in their learning4 ,for when we go after the food they also go along4 ,if they should stay behind1 food is scarce1 therefore they go along4 ,and now ,i hear it said that schooling in the ,dakota language is to be altogether stopped1 and on this account ,i am sad4 ,for in the school-house here they learn well and also they pray4 ,it is because they do these things in the ,dakota language that we have been brought to understand them and to love them1 and gladly live in accordance with them4 ,then also if it was all done 7the teaching and praying7 by a white man we would understand nothing about it1 and so ,i do not think it would be well4 ,and now this is the last thing ,i want to say4 ,the ,grandfather has for his own the ,indians all over the land1 and he always helps them according to what may be for their welfare4 ,now he is measuring off the land for them1 but ,i hear it said that he measures it very1 very small1 and ,i am sad about that4 ,if only he would have mercy and measure it off for them largely1 that is what ,i think4 ,a good while ago the ,grandfather made a treaty with the ,indians and promised to give them three hundred and twenty acres1 and according to that ,i have chosen my homestead and that suits me4 ,therefore ,i prize the ,grandfather's word and measure myself by it4 ,and thus ,i possess myself and my children4 ,although we are not many people here1 yet ,i always command them to give heed to the words of the ,grandfather4 ,and ,i bear witness to their constant attendance at the house 7the
