,his father's home in ,nazareth when ,john the ,baptist began to preach and prepare the people for ,his coming1 as it had been foretold by an ,angel before ,his birth that he should do1 and we are told that all the land of ,judea1 and the people of ,jerusalem1 roused by his preaching1 went to be baptized by him in the river ,jordan1 after confessing their sins4 ,john told them that ,one much greater than he was to come after him1 ,one whose shoes he was not worthy to unloose1 for he could only baptize them with water and exhort them to repent of their sins while there was yet time1 but ,he who was to come after would baptize them with the ,holy ,ghost4 ,this he did till ,jesus ,himself came from ,nazareth to the ,jordan1 and desired ,john1 the companion of ,his childhood1 to baptize ,him also4 ,john objected1 saying that he himself had need to be baptized of ,jesus1 and was not worthy to perform the office for ,him1 but our gracious ,saviour insisted till ,john led ,him into the river and baptized ,him4 ,as they returned to the land a very wonderful thing happened1 for the heavens opened above1 and the ,spirit of ,god1 in the form of a dove1 descended1 and alighted upon ,jesus1 whilst a voice was heard saying ,this is ,my beloved ,son1 in whom ,i am well pleased4 ,then ,john went on his way1 preaching more and more to the people1 and telling every one who would listen to him of the marvellous thing he had seen2 whilst ,christ went away by ,himself into a lonely place called a wilderness1 where1 for forty days1 and forty nights1 ,he was tempted by the devil in all manner of ways1 but finding that1 by the help of ,god ,his ,father1 ,jesus was enabled to resist all temptation to sin1 and would worship and serve none but the true ,god1 the devil at length left ,him1 and ,angels came and ministered unto ,him4 ,illustration ,from that time1 ,jesus being then about thirty years of age1 ,he began to preach1 and exhort to repentance as ,john had done before ,him4 ,one day as ,he walked beside the sea of ,galilee ,he saw two brothers named ,simon-,peter and ,andrew1 fishing by the shore4 ,these men ,he called to ,him and bade them follow ,him for ,he would make them fishers of men1 and they immediately left their nets and followed ,him4 ,presently1 as they walked along the shore1 they saw two other fishermen brothers--,james and ,john1 the sons of ,zebedee1 in a boat with their father1 mending the great1 brown nets with which they caught fish on the ,syrian coasts1 and called them also1 and they too left their nets and their father and followed ,him4 ,they were the first four of the twelve disciples whom ,jesus by degrees gathered about ,him1 and who were ,his companions and assistants in ,his future work4 ,with ,his disciples ,christ travelled over the whole land of ,syria1 now called the ,holy ,land1 teaching in the churches and preaching about the ,kingdom of ,his ,father1 and healing all manner of diseases and sicknesses amongst the people1 until the fame of ,his sayings and doings spread every where1 and the sick and suffering and diseased were brought to ,him from all quarters that ,he might heal them4 ,this ,he never refused to do1 for ,his heart was so overflowing with divine love and pity for mankind that ,he could not see suffering or misery without healing it4 ,illustration3 ,jesus is ,baptized4 ,illustration ,but so immense grew the multitude of people who began to follow and press about ,him1 that ,he had no room to teach or to preach1 no opportunity to rest and talk quietly with ,his disciples either night or day4 ,seeing this ,he went up a mountain side1 and sat down1 and ,his disciples came to ,him1 and there ,he began to instruct the people by preaching to them that most grand and beautiful sermon called the ,sermon on the ,mount1 which contains not only the lessons taught by the series of blessings called ,the ,beatitudes1 at the commencement1 but that prayer of prayers known to every child as the ,lord's ,prayer1 because it is the only one which ,christ ,himself taught word for word with ,his own lips1 and which has remained unaltered through the nineteen hundred years which have gone by since ,he lived on earth4 ,illustration ,the people were very much astonished1 not only at what ,christ preached to them1 but because ,he spoke as if ,he had direct authority for what ,he said1 and this they could not understand1 because they had not forgotten that ,he was the ,son of ,joseph the ,carpenter of ,nazareth4 ,when ,jesus came down from the mountain side1 great multitudes followed ,him1 many of whom were sick and entreated ,him to heal them1 and ,he not only did so1 but performed many yet greater miracles1 such as making the blind to see and the deaf to hear1 and even restoring to life some that were dead1 always however1 impressing on those about ,him1 that it was not by ,his own power that ,he did these things1 but by faith in the ,spirit of ,god ,his ,father who moved within ,him4 ,after having sufficiently taught ,his disciples by quiet talks1 by speaking to them through parables and letting them behold the miracles ,he ,himself performed1 until they thoroughly believed in ,his ,divine power1 ,christ called the whole twelve around ,him and gave them also the power to perform miracles1 to heal all manner of sickness and disease1 and then sent them forth to teach and preach in all the cities of ,israel4 ,he laid upon them many injunctions as to their conduct as they travelled1 how they were to give offence to no one1 and to teach brotherly love and the forgiveness of injuries between man and man as freely as ,god had promised to forgive them4 ,illustration3 ,by the ,sea of ,galilee4 ,now and then1 by twos and threes1 some of the disciples came back to ,jesus to report to ,him what they had done and how they had been received1 and how the fame of ,his ,name and teaching was spreading far and wide2 and so it happened that ,he was seldom without one or two of these loved and trusted followers about ,him as ,he journeyed1 sometimes stopping a few days in one place1 sometimes crossing the inland sea of ,galilee1 or going from city to city along the coast in a boat or ship1 but always doing good wherever ,he went1 preaching the ,gospel of his ,father1 and winning men1 women1 and children to follow ,him4 ,our ,saviour had no comfortable home such as you have2 often and often ,he had nowhere to lay ,his head at night1 but weary and hungry after a long day's ministry1 ,he would stretch ,himself on the ground wherever ,he might be at the time1 and sleep with the grass for ,his bed1 and the starry sky for ,his curtains4 ,illustration ,all through ,his life1 which ,he spent in loving service towards men1 our ,saviour was specially kind and tender to little children4 ,one day ,he was so much inconvenienced by the number of women with children in their arms pressing upon ,him1 and entreating ,him to bless their little ones1 that the disciples who were with ,him rebuked the mothers2 but ,jesus said to them ,suffer the little children to come unto ,me1 and forbid them not1 for of such is the ,kingdom of ,heaven4 ,then ,he told those about ,him that if only they would receive ,his teaching of the ,kingdom of ,god1 and believe in ,him as simply and entirely as little children did1 they would inherit ,eternal ,life2 and ,he would take the little ones who clustered round ,his feet into ,his loving arms and bless them4 ,illustration ,on another occasion when ,his disciples were disputing as to who should be the greatest in the ,kingdom of ,heaven1 ,jesus called a little child and set him in the midst of them1 and said whoever should be as meek and humble as a little child should be the greatest2 and whoever received a little child with love and reverence in ,his ,name1 received ,him1 and then ,he warned them to take heed and not despise little children1 and never to say or do anything that should stain the innocency of their minds because ,in ,heaven their angels do always behold the face of ,my ,father4 ,you1 little children who read this book1 must remember that you are just as much the care of your ,good ,shepherd now1 as were those privileged ones of old who actually saw ,him face to face1 you must have faith in ,him as they had1 and believe that though you cannot see ,him now1 ,he is still1 and always at your side1 seeing all you do1 hearing all you say1 watching over you1 and1 if you will only let ,him1 willing to guide you safely to the ,home in ,heaven which ,he has gone to prepare for those that love ,him and try to do ,his will4 ,illustration3 ,the ,last ,supper4 ,feeling that ,he must go through ,samaria1 where ,he had not yet preached1 our ,saviour travelled on alone and came to a well which is called ,jacob's well2 being very weary ,he seated ,himself on the edge to rest4 ,he was very thirsty also1 and on a woman coming up with a pitcher1 ,he asked her to draw ,him some water3 when ,he had drunk1 ,he said that if she knew who ,he was she would have asked ,him for water instead1 for ,he could give her the ,living ,water of ,everlasting ,life4 ,then ,he told her who ,he was1 and she went away to the city telling every one she met ,whom she had seen3 some of the disciples then joined ,him1 and ,jesus remained two days in the city preaching so that many believed in ,him1 and on the way back into ,galilee ,he healed a nobleman's son of a mortal sickness4 ,illustration ,on returning to ,bethany1 ,jesus heard that ,lazarus1 the brother of ,martha and ,mary1 two sisters whom ,he loved1 had died during ,his absence4 ,martha met ,him weeping1 and told ,him of their grief saying ,lord1 if ,thou hadst been here1 my brother had not died1 for she knew ,jesus would have saved him4 ,jesus ,himself wept to see their sorrow1 and going to the grave ordered the stone to be rolled away and called ,lazarus to come forth2 ,lazarus did so1 and many of those present believed in ,jesus1 but others went away and told the ,high ,priests and rulers1 who were much troubled1 for they said ,if we let this man go many will believe in ,him1 and ,his adherents will become too powerful1 and will take our nation away from us4 ,the people of ,bethany made a supper for our ,lord1 and ,lazarus and ,martha and ,mary were there1 together with the disciples2 the ,feast of the ,passover was near1 and ,jerusalem was crowded1 and the ,chief ,priests became still more uneasy for more and more of the people every day believed in ,christ1 and when they heard ,he was coming to ,jerusalem went out to meet ,him with branches of palm1 crying ,hosannah--,blessed is ,he that cometh in the ,name of the ,lord1 and the people said ,behold1 the world is gone after ,him4 ,illustration ,jesus knew that the time was now come when ,he should depart from this world and go to ,his ,father1 and told ,his disciples so1 saying they must not be troubled1 for there were many mansions in ,his ,father's ,house and ,he was but going before to prepare a place there for them4 ,then1 being sorrowful at heart1 our ,lord went up to a garden called ,gethsemane1 and prayed to ,his ,father that the souls of all mankind might be saved and come at last to share the glory of ,heaven4 ,whilst ,he prayed1 one of ,his disciples1 who knew where ,he was1 wickedly betrayed ,him to the ,chief ,priests1 and guided a band of soldiers to the garden1 who bound ,him and led ,him to the ,high ,priest ,caiaphas1 who in turn sent ,him to be judged by ,pontius ,pilate the ,governor4 ,illustration3 ,the ,ascension4 ,pilate1 when he had heard of what the people accused ,jesus1 knew that it was for envy they were excited against ,him1 and washed his hands before the multitude1 saying he found no fault in ,him1 and he would have nothing to do with shedding the blood of an innocent man4 ,his blood be on us and our children cried the people and they roughly dragged ,him away1 and beat ,him1 and made ,him carry a heavy cross of wood up ,mount ,calvary where they crucified ,him1 by nailing ,him to the cross4 ,now ,mary the ,mother of ,jesus1 and another woman1 also named ,mary1 and many of the disciples had followed in the crowd2 they could not save our ,lord from ,his cruel death1 but when ,he was dead1 they1 together with a good man called ,joseph1 were allowed to take ,his body down from the cross1 and lay it in a tomb belonging to ,joseph1 hewn out of a rock in a garden1 and they set a great stone upon it4 ,it had been foretold that ,jesus should rise again on the third day1 so1 fearing that ,his disciples should steal away the body1 and pretend that ,he had risen1 the ,chief ,priests set keepers to guard the tomb4 ,illustration ,mary1 the ,mother of ,jesus1 and the other ,mary1 went to visit the tomb early in the morning of the third day1 and there was a great earthquake and the ,angel of ,god descended and rolled back the stone and sat upon it1 so that the keepers shook with afright1 but the ,angel said ,fear not1 for ,jesus is not here1 ,he is risen1 as ,he1 said4 so the two ,marys ran to tell ,his disciples the great news1 and on their way met ,jesus ,himself1 and they fell at ,his feet and worshipped ,him4 ,he told them to go and tell ,his disciples to go into ,galilee and ,he would meet them there4 ,this ,he did1 and for the last time ,he met them on a hill side in ,bethany1 and again taught them1 telling them still to go out into the world and preach repentance and the remission of sins in ,his ,name4 ,then ,he lifted up ,his hands1 and blessed them1 and even as ,he did so1 ,he was suddenly carried up into ,heaven and hidden from their sight4 ,helen ,marion ,burnside4 ,illustration
