,willson in the previous month in an    
article which we reproduce for the      
reason that we believe many  readers who
 have been following the chapters of    
,ancient and  ,modern ,physics during   
the last year will like to know         
something  of the author4  ,in these    
paragraphs is said all that need be said
  of one of our most devoted and        

understanding ,theosophists4    ,in     
,march1 #aija1 ,the ,theosophical ,forum
 lost one of its most  willing and      
unfailing contributors4  ,mr4 ,t4,e4    
,willson died  suddenly1 and the news of
 his death reached me when ,i actually  
was in the act of preparing the         
concluding chapter of his  ,ancient and 
,modern ,physics for the ,april number4 
,like the swan1 who sings his one song1 
when feeling that death is  near1 ,mr4  
,willson gave his brother co-workers in 
the ,theosophical  field all that was   
best1 ripest and most suggestive in his 
thought in the series of articles the   
last of which is to come  out in the    
same number with this4    ,the last time
 ,i had a long talk with ,t4,e4         
,willson1 he said    ,for twenty years  
and more ,i was without a hearing1 yet  
my  interest and my faith in what ,i had
 to say never flagged1 the  eagerness of
 my love for my subject never           
diminished4    ,this needs no comment4  
,the quiet and sustained resistance to  

indifference and lack of appreciation1  
is truly the steady  ballast which has  
prevented our ,theosophical ship from   
aimless  and fatal wanderings1 though of
 inclement weather and adverse  winds we
 had plenty4    ,for many long years    
,mr4 ,willson was the librarian of the  
,new ,york  ,world4  ,in the afternoons 
he was too busy to see outsiders1  but1 
beginning with five o'clock in the      
afternoon until he went  home somewhere 
in the neighbourhood of midnight1 he    
always was  glad to see his friends4    
,he had a tiny little room of his own1  
very near the top of the tremendous     
building1 his one window  looking far   
above the roofs of the tallest houses in
 the  district4  ,there he sat at his   
desk1 generally in his shirt  sleeves1  
if the weather was at all warm1 always  
busy with some  matter already printed1 
or going to be1 a quiet1 yet impressive 
and dignified figure4    ,the elevated  
isolation1 both figuratively and        
literally speaking1  in which ,t4,e4    

,willson lived and worked1 in the midst 
of the most  crowded thoroughfares of   
,new ,york1 always made me think of     
,professor ,teufelsdrockh on the attic  
floor of the highest  house in the      
,wahngasse4  ,the two had more than one 
point of  resemblance4  ,they shared the
 loftiness of their point of view1      
their sympathetic understanding of other
 folks1 their loneliness1  and1 above   
all1 their patient1 even humorous       
resignation to the  fact of this        
loneliness4    ,yet in his appearance   
,mr4 ,willson was not like the great    
,weissnichtwo philosopher4  ,in fact1 in
 the cast of his features  and in his   
ways1 ,mr4 ,willson never looked to me  
like a white man4  ,in ,british ,india  
,i have known ,brahmans of the better   
type exactly  with the same sallow      
complexion1 same quick and observant    
brown  eye1 same portly figure and same 
wide-awakeness and agility of  manner4  
,last summer ,i heard1 on good          
authority1 that ,mr4 ,willson had       

thought himself into a most suggestive  
way of dealing with the  problems of    
matter and spirit1 a way which1 besides 
being  suggestive1 bore a great         
resemblance to some theories of the same
  nature1 current in ancient ,india4    
,consequently ,mr4 ,willson was         
offered1 for the first time in his life1
 a chance of expressing  his views on   
matter and spirit in as many articles   
and in as  extensive a shape as he      
chose4  ,the way he received this tardy 
recognition of the fact that he had     
something to say was highly             
instructive4  ,he did not put on airs of
 unrecognized greatness1  though1 ,i    
own1 the occasion was propitious2  he   
did not say1 ,i  told you so2  he simply
 and frankly was glad1 in1 the most     
childlike way4    ,and now that ,i have 
used the word1 it occurs to me that     
childlike is an adjective the best      
applied to this man1 in  spite of his   
portliness1 and his three score and more
 winters4    ,many a pleasant hour ,i   

have spent in the small bookroom of the 
great ,world building4  ,with ,mr4      
,willson talk never flagged4  ,we       
discussed the past and the future of our
 planetary chain1 we  built plans for   
the true and wholesome relation of      
sexes1 we  tried to find out--and       
needless to say never did--the exact    
limit where matter stopped being matter 
and became spirit2  we  also read the   
latest comic poems and also1 from time  
to time1 we  took a header into the     
stormy sea of ,american literature in   
order  to find out what various wise    
heads had to say1 consciously or        
unconsciously1 in favour of our beloved 
,theosophical views4  ,and  all this1   
being interrupted every three minutes or
 so by some  weary apparition from some 
workroom in the ,world with some such   
question3  ,mr4 ,willson1 how am ,i to  
find out the present  whereabouts of    
this or that ,russian man-of-war8  ,mr4 
,willson1  what is the melting point of 
iron8  ,mr4 ,willson1 when was ,h4,m4,s4

  ,pinafore' produced for the first     
time8 etc41 etc4  ,and every  time1 ,mr4
 ,willson got up in the leisurely manner
 peculiar to him1  reached for some book
 from the shelves that lined the room1  
gave  the desired information1 and as   
leisurely returned to the pranic  atom1 
or to come and talk man talk1 ,willy1 or
 to whatever our  subject chanced to be 
at the time4    ,mr4 ,willson's         
gratitude to the ,theosophical ,forum   
for its  recognition was                
disproportionately great4  ,as he wrote 
to the  ,editor3  give me any kind of   
work1 writing for you1 reviewing1       
manuscript or proof reading1 ,i shall do
 anything1 ,i shall  undertake any job1 
even to taking editorial scoldings in   
all good  nature1 only give me work4    
,his devotion to ,theosophical thought  
and work in all their ramifications was 
just as great1 as was his  freedom from 
vanity1 his perfectly natural and       
unaffected  modesty4    ,at the news of 
his death many a heart was sincerely    

sad1 but none  so sad as the heart of   
the editor of the ,theosophical ,forum4 
,for  a friend and co-worker like ,t4,e4
 ,willson1 ever ready to give  material 
help and moral encouragement1 is not    
easily replaced4    ,for a soul so pure 
of any kind of selfishness the          
transition from  the turmoil of life to 
the bright dreams of death must have    
been  both easy and enviable4

,the ,physical ,basis if ,metaphysics   
,the ,hindu system of physics1 on which 
the metaphysical thought of  the ,east  
is based1 does not in its beginnings    
differ widely from  the latest physics  
of the ,west2  but it goes so much      
farther that  our physics is soon lost  
sight of and forgotten4  ,the ,hindu    
conception of the material universe1    
taken from the ,upanishads  and some    
open teaching1 will serve for an        
illustration4  ,they  divide physical   
matter into four kinds--prakriti1 ether1
 prana1  and manasa--which they call    

planes4  ,these differ only in the  rate
 of vibration1 each plane vibrating     
through one great octave1  with gulfs of
 lost octaves between4  ,the highest    
rate of  vibration of prakriti is       
measured by the thousand1 the lowest of 
the ether by trillions1 and the lowest  
of prana by--never mind2  they have1 and
 we have not1 the nomenclature4    ,the 
earth1 they teach1 is a globe of        
prakriti1 floating in an  ocean of      
ether1 which1 as it has the sun for its 
center of  gravity1 must necessarily be 
a globe4  ,this etheric sun-globe has  a
 diameter of over #cjj1jjj1jjj1jjj      
miles4  ,all the planets  revolve around
 the sun far within its atmosphere4     
,the etheric  sun-globe revolves on its 
axis once in about #ba1jjj years1 and   
this revolution causes the precession of
 the equinoxes4  ,this  etheric         
sun-globe is revolving around ,alcyone  
with other etheric  globes having suns  
for their centers and solar systems of  
prakritic globes within them in a great 

year of #e1fdj1jjj1jjj of  our common   
years4  ,its orbit has a diameter of    
#ic1jjj1jjj1jjj1jjj1jjj miles4          
,beyond the etheric globes1 and between 
them1 is a third form of  matter called 
prana1 as much rarer and finer than the 
ether as  the ether is rarer and finer  
than prakriti4  ,as this prana has      
,alcyone for a center of gravity1 it is 
necessarily a globe2  and  there are    
many of these pranic globes floating in 
a vast ocean of  manasa--a form of      
matter as much finer than prana as prana
 is  finer than ether1 or ether than    
prakriti4  ,with this manasa  7which is 
a globe7 the material1 or physical1     
universe ends2  but  there are spiritual
 globes beyond4  ,the material universe 
is  created from manasa1 downward1 but  
it does not respond to or  chord with   
the vibration of the globes above1      
except in a special  instance and in a  
special way1 which does not touch this  
inquiry4    ,the physical universe of   
the ancient 7and modern7 ,hindu         

physicist  was made up of these four    
kinds or planes of matter1 distributed  
in space as globes within globes4       
,professor ,lodge in #ahhd put forth the
 theory that prakriti  7physical matter7
 as we call it1 was in its atoms but    
whirls of  ether4  ,since then          
speculative science has generally       
accepted the  idea that the physical    
atom is made up of many cubic feet of   
ether in chemical union1 as many quarts 
of oxygen and hydrogen  unite chemically
 to make a drop of water4  ,this is an  
old story  to the ,hindu sage4  ,he     
tells his pupils that the great globe of
  manasa once filled all space1 and     
there was nothing else4  ,precisely as  
on this earth we have our elementary    
substances that  change from liquids    
into solids and gases1 so on this       
manasic  globe there were elementary    
substances that took the form of        
liquids1 solids and gases4  ,its manasic
 matter was differentiated  and vibrated
 through one octave1 as the prakritic   

matter does on  the earth4  ,its        
substances combined as that does4       
,one combination produced prana4  ,the  
prana collected1 and formed  globes4    
,on these pranic globes the process was 
repeated1 with  ether as the result1 and
 the etheric globes formed4  ,then the  
process was repeated on the etheric     
globes1 as the modern  scientists have  
discovered1 and prakriti and prakritic  
globes  came into being4    ,the true   
diameter of the earth1 the ancient      
,hindu books say1 is  about #ej1jjj     
miles4  ,that is to say1 the true       
surface of the  earth is the line of    
twenty-four-hour axial rotation2  the   
line  where gravity and apergy exactly  
balance2  where a moon would  have to be
 placed to revolve once in #hf1djj      
seconds4  ,within that  is prakriti2    
without is ether4  ,it is also the line 
of no  friction1 which does exist       
between matter of different planes4     
,there is friction between prakriti1    
between ether1 between prana2  but not  

between ether and prana1 or ether and   
prakriti4  ,friction  is a phenomenon   
confined to the matter of each plane    
separately4  ,we live at the bottom of  
this gaseous ocean--on its floor        
--#ba1jjj miles from the surface and    
only #d1jjj miles from the  center4     
,here1 in a narrow skin limited to a few
 miles above  and below us1 is the realm
 of phenomena1 where solid turns into   
liquid and liquid into gas1 or vice     
versa4  ,the lesson impressed  upon the 
pupil's mind by ,hindu physics is that  
he lives far  within the earth1 not on  
it4    ,there is a comparatively narrow 
skin of and for phenomena  within the   
etheric sun-globe1 say the ,eastern     
teachers1 where the  etheric solids1    
liquids1 and gases meet and mingle and  
interchange4  ,within this skin are all 
the planets--the  gaseous atmosphere of 
the etheric globe stretching millions of
  miles beyond the outermost planetary  
orbit4  ,the earth is in this  skin or  
belt of etheric phenomena1 and its ether

 is in touch with  the ether in         
manifestation on the etheric globe4     
,the sun and  other etheric globes are  
within the corresponding skin of        
phenomena of the pranic globes4  ,the   
prana1 manifesting as solid1  liquid1   
and gas1 or in combination and in forms1
 is in perfect  touch with that of the  
etheric globe1 and through that with the
  prana of the earth4  ,that our prana  
is in touch with that on the  pranic    
globe in all its manifestations means   
much in metaphysics4  ,the same is true 
of the manasic globe1 and of our manasa4
    ,the great lesson the ,eastern      
physics burns into the pupil is that  we
 are living not only within the         
prakritic earth1 but within  each of the
 other globes as well in identically the
 same way and  subject to the same laws4
  ,our lives are not passed on one      
globe1  but in four globes4  ,it is as  
if one said he lived in ,buffalo1  ,erie
 county1 ,new ,york1 ,united ,states2   
that he was a citizen of  each and      

subject to the laws of each4    ,this   
question of the four globes1 of the four
 planes of matter1  of the four skins1  
and of the four conditions or states of 
all  matter and necessarily of all      
persons1 from the purely material       
standpoint1 is not only the foundation  
of ,oriental physics1 but  the very     
essence of ,oriental metaphysics--its   
starting-point and  corner-stone4  ,to  
one who carries with him1 consciously or
  unconsciously1 the concrete knowledge 
of the physics1 the  abstract teaching  
of the metaphysics presents no          
difficulty2  it  is as clear as crystal4
  ,but without the physical teaching the
  metaphysical is not translatable4     
,our ,western physics teaches that      
physical matter is divided into  two    
kinds prakriti 7commonly called physical
 matter7 and ether2  that the           
differences of each of the elementary   
prakritic  substances 7iron1 copper1    
sulphur1 oxygen7 are in their           
molecules1 the fundamental atom being   

the same2  that each of  these          
elementary substances vibrates only     
through one octave1  though on different
 keys2  that it changes from solid to   
liquid  and gas as the rate of vibration
 is increased and from gas to  liquid   
and solid as its vibration is decreased 
within its octave2  that the ether obeys
 identical laws2  that it has elementary
  substances vibrating through one      
octave only1 and that these are  solids1
 liquids1 or gases on the etheric plane 
as prakriti is on  this2  that these    
etheric substances change and combine in
 every  way that prakriti does2  and    
that while all our prakritic  substances
 vibrate within 7say7 fifty simply      
octaves1 the lowest  vibration of       
etheric matter begins over one thousand 
octaves  beyond our highest1 making a   
gulf to leap4  ,the ,eastern physics    
presents this with a wealth of detail   
that dazes the ,western  student1 and   
then adds3  ,but beyond the etheric     
plane 7or  octave7 of vibration for     

matter there is a third plane 7or       
octave7 of vibration called prana and   
beyond that a fourth called  manasa4    
,what is true of one plane is true of   
the other three4  ,one law governs the  
four4  ,as above so below4  ,there is no
 real  gulf2  there is perfect          
continuity4    ,the ,western scientist  
teaches as the foundation of modern     
physics  that each and every atom of    
prakritic matter is the center of an    
etheric molecule of many atoms2  that no
 two prakritic atoms  touch1 although   
their etheric envelopes or atmospheres  
do touch2  and that all physical        
phenomena are caused by the chording    
vibration of the prakritic atom and its 
envelope of ether1 each  sounding the   
same note hundreds of octaves apart4    
,the solid  earth with its atmosphere   
represents the atom with its ether4  ,as
 all the oxygen and hydrogen do not     
combine to make the drop of  water1 some
 remaining in mechanical union to give  
it an  atmosphere1 and about one-fourth 

of its bulk being gas1 so the  atom     
formed of the ether does not use all the
 ether in its  chemical union1 retaining
 some in mechanical union for its       
envelope or atmosphere4    ,the ,hindu  
physics goes much farther along this    
road4  ,it says  that1 when the pranic  
globes were formed1 each atom of prana  
had  its manasic envelope--was the      
center of a manasic molecule4  ,when the
 etheric globes formed1 each atom of    
ether was the center  of a pranic       
molecule1 each atom of which was        
surrounded with  manasa4  ,when the     
prakriti was formed from the ether1 each
 and  every atom of prakriti had the    
triple etheric-pranic-manasic  envelope4
  ,each and every prakritic atom is the 
center of an  etheric molecule1 says our
 ,western science2  but that of the     
,east adds this3  ,and each atom of that
 etheric molecule is the  center of a   
pranic molecule1 and each atom of prana 
in that  pranic molecule is the center  
of a manasic molecule4  ,the four  great

 globes of matter in the material       
universe are represented  and reproduced
 in each and every atom of prakriti1    
which is in  touch with each one of the 
four globes and a part of it4  ,the     
same is true of any aggregation of      
prakriti--of the earth itself  and of   
all things in it1 including man4  ,as   
there are four  atoms in each one1 so   
there are four earths1 four globes1     
consubstantial1 one for each of the four
 elements1 and in touch  with it4  ,one 
is formed of prakritic atoms--the globe 
we know2  another1 of the ether forming 
their envelopes2  another1 of the  prana
 envelopes of ether1 and a fourth of the
 manasa around the  pranic atom4  ,they 
are not skins2  they are consubstantial4
  ,and what is true of atoms or globes  
is true of animals4  ,each has  four    
material bodies1 with each body on the  
corresponding globe  --whether of the   
earth or of the ,universe4  ,this is the
 physical  basis of the famous chain of 
seven globes that is such a             

stumbling-block in ,hindu metaphysics4  
,the spirit passes through  four to get 
in and three to get out--seven in all4  
,the ,hindu  understands without        
explanation4  ,he understands his       
physics4    ,the ,hindu physics teaches1
 with ours1 that the ether is the       
source of all energy1 but1 it adds1 as  
prana is the source of  all life1 and   
manasa of all mind4    ,when the        
prakritic atom is vibrating in chord    
with its etheric  envelope1 say our     
textbooks1 we have physical phenomena   
--light1 heat1 electricity4  ,yes1 says 
the ,hindu teacher2  but  when the atom 
and its ether and its prana are         
vibrating in chord1  we have life and   
vital phenomena added to the energy4    
,when the  atom and its ether1 prana1   
and manasa are vibrating in chord1 we   
have mind and mental phenomena added to 
the life and energy4  ,each atom has    
energy1 life1 and mind in posse4  ,in   
the living  leaf the prakriti1 ether1   
and prana are sounding the threefold    

silver chord of life4  ,in the animal1  
the manasa is sounding the  same note   
with them1 making the fourfold golden   
chord of mind4    ,even in the plant    
there may be a faint manasic overtone1  
for  the potentiality of life and mind  
is in everything4  ,this unity  of the  
physical universe with the physical     
atom1 and with all  things              
created--earth1 animal1 or crystal--is  
the physical  backbone of ,oriental     
metaphysics4  ,prakriti1 ether1 prana1  
and  manasa are in our vernacular the   
,earth1 ,air1 ,fire1 and ,water of  the 
old philosophers--the ,four ,elements4  
,the ,oriental physics has been guarded 
most jealously4  ,for many  thousands of
 years it has been the real occult and  
esoteric  teaching1 while the ,oriental 
metaphysics has been open and  exoteric4
  ,it could not be understood without   
the key1 and the  key was in the physics
 known only to the tried and approved   
disciple4  ,a little has leaked         
out--enough to whet the appetite  of the

 true student and make him ask for more4
          ,chapter ,two    ,the ,two    
,kinds of ,perception      ,to the      
savage1 matter appears in two           
forms--solid and liquid4  ,as he        
advances a step he learns it has three  
forms--solid1  liquid and gas4  ,he     
cannot see the gas1 but he knows it is  
there4    ,a little further on he learns
 that matter as he knows it is only  a  
minute portion of the great universe of 
matter--the few chords  that can be     
struck on the five strings of his       
senses1 and limited  to one octave or   
key4    ,whether the particular matter  
he investigates has a solid1 a  liquid1 
or a gaseous form depends upon its rate 
of vibration4  ,if  it is a liquid1 by  
raising its rate of vibration one third 
it  becomes a gas2  by reducing it one  
third it becomes a solid4    ,each kind 
of matter has vibration only through one
 octave4  ,it is  known to us only by   
its vibration in that octave4  ,each    
kind of  matter has a different         

octave--is set on a higher or lower key1
  so to speak1 but all octaves of       
vibration are between the highest  of   
hydrogen gas and the lowest of carbon4  
,in mechanical compounds1 such as air or
 brass1 the rate of  vibration of the   
compound is the least common multiple of
 the two  or more rates4  ,in chemical  
compounds1 such as water or alcohol1    
the rate is that of the highest1 the    
others uniting in harmonic  fractions4  
,all matter as we know it through our   
senses--prakriti1 as it is  called in   
the ,secret ,doctrine to distinguish it 
from non-sensual  matter--is the        
vibration of an universal ,something1 we
 do not  know what1 through these       
different octaves4  ,the elementary     
substances 7so-called7 are one and the  
same thing--this  ,something--in        
different keys and chords of vibration2 
keys that  run into one another1        
producing all sorts of beautiful        
harmonies4    ,taking any one of these  
elements1 or any of their compounds1 all

  we know of it is limited strictly to  
its changes during vibration  through   
one octave4  ,what happens when the     
vibration goes above  or below the      
octave has not yet been treated         
hypothetically4    ,while some elements 
are vibrating on higher and some on     
lower  keys1 we can consider them all as
 vibrating within one great  octave1    
that octave of the universal ,something 
which produces  sensual matter1 or      
prakriti4    ,but matter is not         
confined1 we know1 to this great octave1
  although our sensual knowledge of it  
is strictly confined to it4  ,how do we 
know it8    ,knowledge comes to us in   
two ways1 and there are two kinds of    
knowledge4    #a4 ,that which comes     
through our senses1 by observation and  
experience4  ,this includes reasoning   
from relation4    #b4 ,that which comes 
through intuition--or1 as some writers  
inaccurately say1 through the formal    
laws of thought4    ,all the observation
 and experience of the rising and the   

setting  of the sun for a thousand      
centuries could only have confirmed the 
first natural belief that it revolved   
daily around the earth2  nor by joining 
this experience with other experiences  
could any  deduction have come from our 
reason that would have opposed it4  ,not
 our reason but our intuition said that 
the sun stood still  and the earth      
revolved daily4  ,the oldest books in   
existence tell  us that this axial      
revolution of the earth was not only    
known in  the very dawn of time but that
 it has been known to every race        
7except our own of ,european savages7   
from before the time thought  was first 
transmitted by writing4    ,ask the     
ablest living geographer or physicist to
 prove to you  that the earth revolves  
daily and he will reply that it would be
  the job of his life4  ,it can be done 
at great expense and great  labor1 but  
that is because we know the answer and  
can invent a  way of showing it1 not    
because there are any observations from 

which a deduction would naturally       
follow4    ,nearly if not all our great 
discoveries have come to us through     
intuition and not from observation and  
experience4  ,when we know  the lines on
 which to work1 when intuition has given
 us the ,,key1  then the observation and
 experience men prize so highly1 and the
  reason they worship so devoutly1 will 
fill in the details4  ,the  knowledge   
that flows from observation and the     
reasoning from the  facts it records1 is
 never more than relatively true1 it is 
always limited by the facts1 and any    
addition to the facts  requires the     
whole thing to be restated4  ,we never  
know all the  facts2  seldom even the   
more important2  and reason grasps only 
details4    ,lamarck's theory of        
evolution1 known to all ,asiatic races  
from  time immemorial1 was the          
intuitional and absolute knowledge that 
comes to all men when they reach a      
certain stage of development4  ,reason  
could never have furnished it from the  

facts1 as ,cuvier  proved in the great  
debate in the ,french ,academy in #ahdb1
 when he  knocked ,lamarck out1 for the 
time being1 because it did not  conform 
to the facts1 and did not follow from   
any relation of the  facts4    ,darwin's
 theory of the survival of the fittest  
in the struggle  for existence1 as an   
explanation of the origin of species1   
was  from observation and experience4   
,it was based on observed facts4  ,but  
,darwin was an evolutionist--a disciple 
of ,lamarck4  ,he held  the ,key4  ,he  
used the ,key4  ,the value of ,darwin's 
work does not  lie in his discovering   
that some bugs have been derived from   
other bugs and that the intermediate    
bugs have died off4  ,its  overwhelming 
value to mankind was in showing that    
work on the  theory of evolution was    
correct work and that the theory was    
true4  ,when the intuition of man points
 out the way the reason of  man can     
follow the path and macadam the road4   
,it usually does  and claims all the    

credit for itself as the original       
discoverer4    ,this knowledge through  
intuition is absolute and exact4  ,it is
  not relatively true4  ,it is          
absolutely and invariably true4  ,no    
additional facts will ever modify it1 or
 require a restatement4    ,when ,sir   
,william ,hamilton based his ,logic on  
the dictum that ,all  knowledge is      
relative1 and only relatively true1 the 
proposition  was self-evidently false4  
,it was in itself a statement of        
absolute knowledge about a certain      
thing4  ,it was in itself  knowledge    
that was not relative4  ,all knowledge  
could not be  relative if this knowledge
 was not4  ,this knowledge could not  be
 either absolute or relative without    
upsetting his whole  proposition1 for1  
if relative1 then it was not always     
true2  and if absolute1 then it was     
never true4    ,sir ,william did not    
know the distinction between the two    
kinds of  knowledge1 and what he meant  
to say was that ,all knowledge  obtained

 by observation and experience is       
relative1 and only  relatively true4    
,his knowledge of this relativity was   
not obtained by observation  or from    
reason4  ,it could not possibly have    
been obtained in that  way4  ,it came   
from intuition1 and it was absolute and 
exact4  ,a  man may have absolute and   
exact knowledge and yet not be able to  
put it into words that exactly express  
it to another4  ,hamilton  had this     
knowledge4  ,but it was not clearly     
formulated even in  his own mind4  ,he  
had two separate and distinct meanings  
for the  word knowledge1 without being  
conscious of it4    ,we have yet to coin
 a proper word to express what comes to 
us  through intuition4  ,the old        
,english word wisdom originally did4    
,the old verb wis was meant what a man  
knew without being told  it1 as ken     
meant knowledge by experience4  ,try and
 prove by  reason that a straight line  
is the shortest distance between two    
points1 or that a part can never be     

greater than the whole1 and  your reason
 has an impossible task4  ,you must take
 them for  axioms1 it says4  ,you must  
take them because you wis them1 not     
because you know 7ken7 them4            
,intuitional knowledge must not be      
confounded with the relative  knowledge 
that flows through the reason3  that ,if
 the sum of two  numbers is one and     
their difference is five1 the numbers   
are  minus two and plus three4    ,the  
point cannot be too strongly enforced   
that there is a  distinction between the
 sources of what we know1 and that while
  all we know through our sensations is 
only relatively true1 that  which we    
know from intuition is invariably and   
absolutely true4  ,this is seen through 
a glass darkly1 in theology1 where      
intuition  is called inspiration and not
 differentiated from reason4    ,the    
false notion that we can only learn by  
observation and  experience1 that the   
concept can never transcend the         
observation1  that we can only know what

 we can prove to our senses1 has        
wrought incalculable injury to progress 
in philosophy4    ,because our sensual  
knowledge of matter begins and ends with
  vibration in one octave it does not   
follow that this ends our  knowledge of 
it4  ,we may have intuitional knowledge1
 and this  intuitional knowledge is as  
susceptible to reason as if we had      
obtained it by observation4    ,the     
knowledge that comes through intuition  
tells us of matter  vibrating in another
 great octave just beyond our own1 which
  ,science has chosen to name the       
etheric octave1 or plane4  ,the  instant
 our intuition reveals the cause of     
phenomena our reason  drops in and tells
 us it is the chording vibration of the 
matter  of the two planes--the physical 
and etheric--that produces all  physical
 phenomena4  ,it goes further and       
explains its variations4    ,this       
knowledge of another octave or plane of 
matter comes from  the logical relations
 of matter and its physical phenomena2  

but  there was nothing in the           
observation or experience of mankind    
that would have led us to infer from    
reason an etheric plane of  matter4  ,it
 was revealed truth4  ,but the flash of 
revelation  having once made the path   
apparent1 the light of reason carries   
us through all the winding ways4  ,our  
knowledge of the ether is  not          
guess-work or fancy1 any more than our  
geometry is1 because  it is based on    
axioms our reason cannot prove4  ,in    
both cases the  basic axioms are        
obtained from intuition2  the structural
 work  from reason4  ,our knowledge of  
the ether may be as absolute and  exact 
as our knowledge of prakriti1 working on
 physical as we  work on geometrical    
axioms4    ,the recognition of the two  
sources of knowledge1 the work of the   
spirit within us and of the mind within 
us1 is absolutely  necessary to         
correctly comprehend the true           
significance of the  results of modern  
science and to accept the ancient4      

,chapter ,three    ,matter and ,ether   
,it is not worthwhile translating ,homer
 into ,english unless the  readers of   
the translation understand ,english4    
,it is not worthwhile attempting to     
translate the occult ,eastern  physics  
into the language of our ,western and   
modern physics1  unless those who are to
 read the translation understand        
generally  and broadly what our own     
modern physics teach4  ,it is not       
necessary that they should know all     
branches of our modern  physics in all  
their minute ramifications2  but it is  
necessary  that they should understand  
clearly the fundamental principles  upon
 which our scientific and technical     
knowledge of today rests4    ,these     
fundamental principles have been        
discovered and applied in  the past     
fifty years--in the memory of the       
living4  ,they have  revolutionized     
science in all its departments4  ,our   
textbooks on  ,chemistry1 ,light1 ,heat1
 ,electricity and ,sound have had to be 

entirely re-written2  and in many other 
departments1 notably in  medicine and   
psychology1 they have yet to be         
re-written4  ,our  textbooks are in a   
transition state1 each new one going a  
step  farther1 to make the change       
gradual from the old forms of belief  to
 the new1 so that even ,tyndall's       
textbook on ,sound is now so  antedated1
 or antiquated1 that it might have been 
written in  darkest ,africa before the  
pyramids were built1 instead of twenty  
years ago4    ,all this change has      
flowed from the discovery of ,faraday   
that  there are two states or conditions
 of matter4  ,in one it is  revealed by 
one of our five senses1 visible1        
tangible1 smellable1  tastable1 or      
ponderable matter4  ,this is matter as  
we know it4  ,it may be a lump of metal 
or a flask of gas4    ,the second       
condition or state of matter is not     
revealed by either  of our five senses1 
but by the sixth sense1 or intuition of 
man4  ,this is the ether--supposed to be

 matter in a very rarefied  form1 which 
permeates all space4  ,so rare and fine 
is this  matter that it interpenetrates 
carbon or steel as water                
interpenetrates a sponge1 or ink a      
blotting pad4  ,in fact1 each  atom of  
physical matter--by which is meant      
matter in the first  condition--floats  
in an atmosphere of ether as the solid  
earth  floats in its atmosphere of air4 
,no two physical atoms touch1 said      
,faraday4  ,each physical atom  is the  
centre of an etheric molecule1 and as   
far apart from every  other atom as the 
stars in heaven from one another4  ,this
 is  true of every form of physical     
matter1 whether it is a lump of  metal1 
a cup of liquid1 or a flask of gas2     
whether it is a  bronze statue or a     
living man2  a leaf1 a cloud1 or the    
earth  itself4  ,each and every physical
 atom is the centre of an etheric       
molecule made up of many atoms of the   
ether4    ,this duality of matter was a 
wonderful discovery1 revolutionizing    

every department of science4  ,it placed
 man in actual touch with  the whole    
visible universe4  ,the ether in a man's
 eye 7and in his  whole body7 reaches in
 one unbroken line--like a telegraph    
wire  --from him to the sun1 or the     
outermost planet4  ,he is not  separate 
and apart from space1 but a part of it4 
,each physical  atom of his physical    
body is the centre of an etheric        
molecule1  and he has two bodies1 as    
,st4 ,paul said1 a visible physical and 
an invisible etheric body2  the latter  
in actual touch with the  whole         
universe4    ,faraday went one step     
further4  ,he demonstrated that all     
physical phenomena come from the        
chording vibration of the  physical atom
 with the surrounding etheric atoms1 and
 that the  latter exercise the impelling
 force on the former4  ,step into the   
sunshine4  ,the line of ether from the  
sun is vibrating faster  than the ether 
in the body1 but the higher impels the  
lower1 the  greater controls the lesser1

 and soon both ethers are in unison4    
,the physical atoms must coincide in    
vibration with their etheric  envelopes1
 and the note is heat4  ,step into the  
shade1 where  the ocean of ether is     
vibrating more slowly1 and the ether of 
the  body reduces its vibration4  ,the  
ether is the origin of all  force and of
 all phenomena4    ,this etheric matter 
follows identical laws with prakritic   
matter1  or1 accurately1 the laws of our
 matter flow from the etheric  matter   
from which it is made4  ,the ether has  
two hundred or more  elementary         
substances1 each atom of our eighty or  
ninety  elements being the chemical     
union of great masses of two or  more of
 the etheric elements or their          
combinations4  ,these  etheric          
elementary substances combine and unite2
  our elementary  substances simply     
following in their combinations the law 
which  they inherit from their parents4 
,they take form and shape4  ,they       
vibrate through one octave1 and take    

solid liquid or gaseous form  in ether1 
as their types here in our world take it
 in prakriti1  as their vibrations are  
increased or diminished4  ,in short1 the
  ether is the prototype of our physical
 or prakritic world1 out of  which it is
 made and a product of which it is4     
,as this ether is physical matter1 the  
same as prakriti1 one  harmonic law     
covering both1 and as this ether fills  
all space1  ,modern ,science divides    
physical matter into two kinds1 which1  
for  convenience in differentiation1 are
 here called prakritic and  etheric4    
,matter is something--science does not  
know or care to know what  --in         
vibration4  ,a very low octave of       
vibration produces  prakriti2  a very   
high octave of vibration produces ether4
  ,the  vibration of prakriti ends in   
thousands2  that of ether begins in     
billions4  ,between them there is a gulf
 of vibrations that has  not yet been   
bridged4  ,for that reason science      
divides matter  into two planes1 or     

octaves1 of vibration--the matter of    
this  visible and tangible plane being  
called prakriti and that of the         
invisible and intangible plane being    
called etheric4  ,across this  gulf the 
two planes respond to each other1 note  
for note1 the  note in trillions        
chording when the note in thousands is  
struck4  ,note for note1 chord for      
chord1 they answer one another1 and the 
minutest and the most complex phenomena 
are alike the result of  this harmonic  
vibration1 that of the ether supplying  
,force and  that of the prakriti a      
,medium in which it can manifest4       
,this knowledge of ether is not         
guesswork or fancy1 and1 while it  is as
 impossible of proof as the axioms of   
geometry1 it is worthy  the same        
credence and honor4  ,we are working on 
physical axioms  exactly as we work on  
geometrical axioms4    ,modern science  
represents each and every prakritic atom
 as a  globe like the earth1 floating in
 space and surrounded by an  atmosphere 

of ether4  ,the subdivision of prakritic
 matter until  we reach etheric atoms   
chemically united to make the physical  
unit is the correct definition of an    
atom4  ,the prakritic  physical atom has
 length1 breadth and thickness4  ,and it
 has an  atmosphere of ether which not  
only interpenetrates the atom as  oxygen
 and hydrogen interpenetrate the drop of
 water1 but  furnishes it with an       
envelope as the oxygen and hydrogen     
furnish  the drop of water with one4    
,each physical atom is the centre of an 
etheric molecule composed  of many      
etheric atoms vibrating at a greater or 
lesser speed and  interpenetrating the  
atom4  ,each may be considered a        
miniature  earth1 with its aerial       
envelope1 the air1 penetrating all parts
  of it4    ,the etheric plane of matter
 not only unites with this prakritic    
plane through the atom but it           
interpenetrates all combinations of  it2
  beside the atom as well as through the
 atom4  ,the grain of  sand composed of 

many prakritic atoms is also composed of
 many  times that number of etheric     
atoms4  ,the grain of sand is etheric   
matter as well as prakritic matter4  ,it
 exists on the etheric  plane exactly   
the same as it exists on the prakritic1 
and it has  etheric form as well as     
prakritic form4    ,as each atom of this
 physical world of ours--whether of     
land1 or  water1 or air2  whether of    
solid1 liquid or gas--is the centre  of 
an etheric molecule1 we have two worlds1
 not one3  a physical  world and an     
etheric one2  a visible world and an    
invisible  world2  a tangible world and 
an intangible world2  a world of  effect
 and a world of cause4    ,and each     
animal1 including man1 is made in the   
same way4  ,he has  a prakritic body and
 an etheric body2  a visible body and an
  invisible body2  an earthly body and  
one not made with hands1  in common     
touch with the whole universe4          
,chapter ,four    ,what a ,teacher      
,should ,teach      ,let us suppose that

 a certain wise teacher of physics      
places a  row of ,bunsen burners under a
 long steel bar having a ,daniell's     
pyrometer at one end1 and addresses his 
class 7substantially7 as  follows3      
,at our last lecture we found that the  
matter of the universe  permeated all   
space1 but in two conditions1 which we  
agreed to  call physical and etheric1 or
 tangible and intangible4  ,it is all   
the same matter1 subject to the same    
laws1 but differing in the  rate of     
vibration1 the physical matter vibrating
 through one  great octave or plane1 and
 the etheric vibrating through another  
great octave or plane one degree        
higher--the chording vibration  of the  
matter of the two planes in one note    
producing what we  call energy or force1
 and with it phenomena4    ,this is a   
bar of steel #cf inches long4  ,it is   
composed of  physical atoms but no two  
physical atoms touch4  ,each physical   
atom is as far apart from every other   
atom as the stars in heaven  from one   

another--in proportion to their size4   
,the atoms and  the spaces between them 
are so small to our sight that they seem
  to touch4  ,if we had a microscope of 
sufficient power to reveal  the atom1   
you would see that no two atoms touch1  
and that the  spaces between them are1  
as ,faraday says1 very great in         
proportion to their size4  ,i showed you
 last term that what  appeared to be a  
solid stream of water1 when magnified   
and thrown  upon a screen1 was merely a 
succession of independent drops that    
did not touch4  ,i can not yet give you 
proof of the bar of iron  being composed
 of independent atoms1 but that is the  
fault of our  instruments1 and you must 
take my word for it until the proof is  
simplified and made easy of application4
    ,each one of these physical atoms is
 a miniature world4  ,it is  the center 
of an ocean of ether1 composed of many  
atoms2  and  while no two physical atoms
 touch1 their etheric atmospheres do    
touch1 and any change in the vibration  

of the etheric atmosphere  of one will  
be imparted to that of the next4  ,as   
the vibration of  the physical atom must
 be in harmony with that of its etheric 
atmosphere1 any change coming to one    
will be imparted to the  next1 and the  
next1 through the ether surrounding     
them4    ,you can see that the index at 
the end of the bar has moved1  showing  
that it is now longer4  ,that means the 
etheric atoms are  now vibrating faster1
 taking more space1 and have necessarily
  forced each physical atom farther     
apart4  ,the bar is not only  longer1   
but softer1 and as the vibrations       
increase in rapidity  the time will come
 when it will bend by its own weight1   
and even  when it will become a liquid  
and a gas4    ,if you put your hand     
anywhere near the bar you will feel a   
sensation called heat1 and say it has   
become hot4  ,the reason for  that is   
that you are in actual and literal touch
 with the bar or  iron through the      
ether4  ,it is not alone each atom of   

the bar of  iron that is surrounded by  
the ether1 but each atom of the air1    
and each atom of your body4  ,their     
etheric atmospheres are all  touching1  
and the increase in the vibration of the
 ether  surrounding the atoms of iron is
 imparted to those of the air           
surrounding it1 and these in turn raise 
the rate of vibration in  the etheric   
atoms surrounding the physical atoms of 
your hand4  ,this rate of vibration in  
your nerves causes a sensation1 or      
mental impression1 you call heat4       
,consciousness of it comes  through your
 sense of touch2  but after all it is   
merely a rate  of vibration which your  
brain recognizes and names4    ,the bar 
has now reached a temperature of about  
#gjj degrees1 and  has become a dull    
red4  ,why do you say the color has     
changed1 and  why do you say red8       
,because the rate of vibration of the   
etheric atoms in the bar is  now about  
#dab trillions per second1 and this rate
 of vibration  having been imparted to  

the ether of the air1 has in turn been  
imparted to the ether of your eye1 and  
this rate of vibration in  the ether of 
the nerves of your eye your brain       
recognizes and  calls 'red4'    ,the    
heat still continues and increases4     
,you now have both heat  and light4  ,so
 you see that the ether is not vibrating
 in a  single note1 but in two chording 
notes1 producing light and heat4  ,there
 are two kinds of ether around the iron 
atom4  ,there is  sound also1 but the   
note is too high for one's ears4  ,it is
 a  chord of three notes4    ,professor 
,silliman1 of ,yale1 discovered over    
twenty years ago1  that the ether could 
be differentiated into the luminiferous1
 or  light ether1 and the sonoriferous1 
or sound ether4    ,other great         
scientists since then have found a third
 ether--the  heat ether4    ,their      
discoveries show that the atmospheric   
etheric envelope of  each etheric atom  
is made up of etheric atoms of different
  vibratory powers4  ,as the atmosphere 

of the earth is made up of  atoms of    
oxygen and nitrogen and argon1 so that  
of an atom is  made up of three kinds of
 ethers1 corresponding to three of our  
senses4  ,that it consists of five      
ethers1 corresponding to our  five      
senses1 as the ancient ,hindus          
assert--who can say8    ,i mention this 
subject of the differentiation of the   
ether  merely that you may not suppose  
that the ether is a simple  substance4  
,for the present we will treat it as a  
simple  substance1 but next year we will
 take it up as a compound one4    ,this 
steel bar before you is not one bar1 but
 two bars4  ,there  is a visible bar and
 an invisible bar1 the visible bar being
 made  of physical atoms1 and the       
invisible bar of etheric atoms4  ,the   
etheric bar is invisible1 but it is made
 of matter1 the same as  the visible    
bar1 and it is just as real1 just as    
truly a bar as  the one we see4    ,more
 than this4  ,the etheric1 invisible bar
 is the source and  cause of all        

phenomena connected with the bar4  ,it  
is the real  bar1 and the one we see is 
merely the shadow in physical matter  of
 a real bar4  ,in shape1 strength1      
color1 in short1 in  everything1 it     
depends on the invisible one4  ,the     
invisible  dominates1 governs1 disposes4
  ,the visible is merely its  attendant 
shadow1 changing as the invisible1      
etheric bar changes1  and recording for 
our senses these invisible changes4     
,the invisible change always comes      
first2  the invisible  phenomena        
invariably precede the visible4    ,in  
all this physical world--in all this    
universe--there is  nothing1 not even a 
grain of sand or an atom of hydrogen1   
that is  not as this bar of iron is--the
 shadow cast on a visible world  by the 
unknown and mysterious work of an       
invisible world4    ,land or water1     
mountain or lake1 man or beast1 bird or 
reptile1  cold or heat1 light or        
darkness1 all are the reflection in     
physical matter of the true and real    

thing in the invisible and  intangible  
world about us4  ,if we have a visible  
body we have an  invisible one also1    
said ,saint ,paul4  ,modern science has 
proven  he was right1 and that it is the
 invisible body which is the real  body4
    ,if this earth and all that it is   
composed of--land or ocean or  air2  man
 or beast2  pyramid or pavement--could  
be resolved into  the physical atoms    
composing everything in it or on it     
created by  ,god or man1 each atom of   
this dust would be identical physically4
  ,there would not be one kind of atom  
for iron and another for  oxygen4       
,the differentiation between what are   
called elementary  substances is first  
made apparent in the molecule or first  
combination of the atoms4  ,it is not in
 the atom itself1 unless  it be in the  
size1 as may not be improbable4  ,the   
atoms combine  in different numbers to  
make differently shaped molecules1 and  
it  is from this difference in the shape
 of the molecule that we get  the       

difference between gold and silver1     
copper and tin1 or oxygen  and hydrogen4
    ,in all chemical compounds1 such as 
water and alcohol1 the  molecules at the
 base of the two or more substances     
break up into  their original atoms and 
form a new molecule composed of all the 
atoms in the two or more things         
combined4  ,to make this chemical       
combination we must change the rate of  
vibration of one or the  other or both  
until they strike a common chord4  ,as  
we saw last  term1 oxygen and hydrogen  
have different specific heats1 and no   
two other elements have the same        
specific heat1 while heat raises  the   
rate of vibration4  ,any given amount of
 heat raises the  vibration of one more 
than another4  ,apply heat1 and the rate
 of  one will rise faster than that of  
the other until they reach a  common    
chord4  ,then they fall apart and       
recombine4    ,if we pass a current of  
electricity through this sealed jar     
containing oxygen and hydrogen in       

mechanical union1 the spark  that leaps 
across the points furnishes the heat1   
and a drop of  water appears and falls  
to the bottom4  ,a large portion of the 
gases has disappeared4  ,it has been    
converted into water4  ,what  is left of
 the gases will expand and fill the     
bottle4    ,the drop of water but for   
local causes1 but for a certain         
attraction of the earth1 would float in 
the centre of the jar at  the centre of 
gravity1 as the earth does in space4    
,but the  centre of gravity of the two  
bodies is far within the earth1 and  the
 drop gets as close to it as it can4    
,the earth's 'pull' takes  it to the    
bottom4  ,if the jar were far enough    
away in space the  drop would float1 as 
the earth floats1 at a point where all  
pulls  balance1 and the drop of water   
would have enough pull of its own1      
enough gravity within itself to hold all
 the gas left in the jar  to itself as  
an atmosphere4  ,it would be a centre of
 energy1 a  minature world4    ,the drop

 of water is not a homogenous mass4     
,about one third of  the bulk of the    
drop of water is made up of independent 
oxygen  and hydrogen atoms interspersed 
through it1 as any liquid is  through   
this piece of blotting paper4  ,and it  
has1 and keeps1 by  its own attraction1 
an atmosphere of the gas4  ,each        
molecule of  water has a thin layer1 or 
skin1 of the gas2  even as it comes     
from this faucet4    ,let us return     
again to the physical dust1 the atom4   
,why should  it form by fives for iron1 
by nines for hydrogen8  ,where did the  
atom come from8  ,what is it8  ,we know 
that like the drop of  water1 it is a   
miniature world with an atmosphere of   
ether2  and  the natural inference is   
that it is made from ether as the drop  
of water was made from gas4  ,many      
things confirm this inference1  and it  
may be accepted as 'a working           
hypothesis' that it is made  from ether 
as the drop of water is made from gas1  
by the chemical  union of a large amount

 of ether of different kinds1 the       
etheric  molecules of which consist of  
#b and #c or #e and #d etheric atoms1   
and that the tendency to combine in this
 or that number in  physical matter is  
an inherited tendency brought with it   
from the  etheric world of matter on    
which1 or in which1 each element of     
this world is two or more4  ,there is no
 kind of matter in this  physical world1
 that has not its prototype in the      
etheric1 and  the laws of its action and
 reaction here are laws which it        
inherits and brings with it4  ,they are 
not laws made here4  ,they  are laws of 
the other world--even as the matter     
itself is matter  of the other world4   
,in #ahhb1 ,professor ,lodge1 in a      
lecture before the ,royal  ,institution 
on ',the ,luminiferous ,ether' defined  
it as3    ',one continuous substance1   
filling all space1 which can vibrate  as
 light1 which can be sheared into       
positive and negative  electricity1     
which in whirls constitutes matter1 and 

which  transmits by continuity and not  
impact every action and reaction  of    
which matter is capable4'    ,this reads
 today like baby-talk but at that time  
7eighteen years  ago71 it was considered
 by many timid conservative scientists  
as  'a daring movement4'  ,it is        
noteworthy in that it was the first     
public scientific announcement that the 
physical matter is a  manifestation or  
form of the ether4  ,and it was made    
before  general acceptance of the       
division of the ether into soniferous1  
luminiferous and tangiferous4    ',which
 in whirls constitutes matter4'         
,professor ,lodge believed  that 'some  
etheric molecules revolved so rapidly on
 their axis  that they could not be     
penetrated4'  ,watch the soap-bubbles   
that  ,i am blowing4  ,each and every   
one is revolving as the earth  revolves1
 from west to east4  ,what ,i wish to   
call your attention  to is the fact that
 can be proven1 both mathematically and 
theoretically1 that at a certain rate of

 speed in the revolution  they could not
 be penetrated by any rifle-ball4  ,at a
 higher rate  of speed they would be    
harder than globes of solid chilled     
steel1  harder even than carbon4        
,professor ,lodge believed that the     
etheric molecule revolved so rapidly    
that1 thin as it was in its  shell1 it  
gave us the dust out of which worlds    
were made4  ,there  is one fatal error  
in this idea1 although it is held even  
now by  many4  ,it is based entirely on 
gravity1 and gravity is alone           
considered in its problems4  ,there are 
two great forces in the  universe1 not  
one1 as many scientific people fail to  
remember  --,gravity and ,apergy1 or the
 centrifugal and centripetal forces4    
,the pull in is and must be always      
balanced by the pull out4  ,there is in 
the universe as much repulsion as       
attraction1 and the  former is a force  
quite as important as the latter4  ,the 
bubble's  speed kept increasing until   
apergy1 the tendency to fly off1        

overcame gravity1 and it ruptured4      
,professor ,lodge failed to take into   
account this apergic force1  this       
tendency to fly off1 when he gave such  
high revolutionary  speed to the etheric
 molecules1 a speed in which apergy     
would  necessarily exceed gravity4  ,the
 failure to take apergy into            
consideration has been the undoing of   
many physicists4    ,today we know that 
the ether is matter1 the same as our    
own1  only finer and rarer and in much  
more rapid vibration4  ,we know  that   
this ether has its solids1 liquids and  
gases formed from  molecules of its     
atoms1 even as our own are formed4  ,we 
know that  its atoms combine as ours do1
 and while we have but eighty           
elementary combinations1 it must have   
more than double the  number4  ,we know 
that every form and shape and           
combination of  these elements from this
 plane flows from inherited tendencies  
having their root in the etheric world4 
,the two worlds are one world--as much  

at one with ours as the  world of gas   
about us is at one with our liquids and 
solids4  ,it  is 'continuity1 not       
impact4'  ,they not only touch          
everywhere and  in everything1 but they 
are one and the same in action and      
reaction4    ,thus spake a certain wise 
teacher of physics4  ,to his wise       
utterances1 we can only add that such as
 we are today we see  through a glass1  
darkly4  ,yet there will come a day when
 the  physical bandages will be removed 
from our eyes1 and we shall see  face to
 face the beauty and grandeur and glory 
of this invisible  world1 and that in   
truth it 'transmits by continuity and   
not  impact every action and reaction of
 which matter is capable1'  forming one 
continuous chain of cause and effect1   
without a link  missing4  ,there are no 
gulfs to cross2  no bridges to be made4 
,it is here2  not there4  ,it is at one 
with us4  ,and we are at one  with it4  
,one and the same law controls and      
guides the etheric  atom and the        

physical atom made from its molecules1  
whether the  latter are made in whirls1 
as at first supposed1 or by orderly     
combination as now believed4    ,in     
fact1 this visible world of ours is the 
perfect product of the  other invisible 
one1 having in it its root and          
foundation1 the  very sap of its life4  
,chapter ,five    ,the ,four ,manifested
 ,planes    ,the oriental idea of the   
universe does not differ fundamentally  
in its general conception1 from that of 
modern science1 but it  goes farther and
 explains more4  ,the physics of the    
secret  doctrine are based upon a       
material universe of four planes of     
vibration and a spiritual universe of   
three planes of vibration  beyond       
matter4  ,this ,something in vibration  
may be given the  ,english name1        
,consciousness--without entering upon   
its nature4    ,spirit is consciousness 
in vibration and undifferentiated4      
,matter is consciousness in vibration   
and differentiated4    ,as we divide the

 seven octaves of a piano into ,treble  
and ,bass  for clearness of thought and 
writing1 so the ,hidden ,knowledge      
divides the seven octaves of vibration1 
or planes1 into ,spirit  and ,matter4   
,in their ultimate analysis they are one
 and the same  thing1 as ice and water  
are the same thing2  but for study they 
must be differentiated4    ,the material
 and physical universe consists of four 
planes of  matter1 or four great octaves
 of vibration1 each differentiated  from
 the other as in our physics prakriti is
 differentiated from  ether4  ,the      
material universe1 the ancient physics  
teach1 was  originally pure thought1    
,manasa1 the product of the spiritual   
planes above4  ,this manasic world was  
differentiated1 a real  world4  ,that is
 to say it was given elementary         
substances by the  union of its atoms in
 different sized molecules4  ,some of   
its  elements combined and formed       
,prana4  ,the prana gathered and  formed
 other worlds1 pranic worlds4  ,then in 

the pranic world  etheric worlds were   
formed2  and finally in the etheric     
worlds1  prakritic globes like the earth
 were formed4  ,the earth is the  centre
 of a prakritic globe1 revolving in     
ether around the sun4  ,the sun is the  
centre of a solar globe of ether1       
revolving in  prana around ,alcyone4    
,alcyone is the centre of a stellar     
globe  of prana revolving in manasa     
around the central and hidden sun of    
the great manasic globe4  ,these four   
conditions of matter  prakriti1 ether1  
prana1 and manasa are the earth1 water1 
fire1  air of the ,ancient ,metaphysics1
 the four elements of matter1 and  are  
present in every atom of prakriti4      
,when the atom of prana  was formed1 it 
had an envelope of manasa4  ,when the   
atom of ether  was formed it had an     
envelope of pranic-manasic atoms4  ,when
 the  prakritic atom was formed it had  
an envelope of etheric-pranic-  manasic 
atoms1 each of its encircling etheric   
atoms being the  centre of a pranic     

molecule1 and each pranic atom of that  
molecule being the centre of a manasic  
molecule4    ,each atom of prakriti was 
the material universe in miniature4  ,it
  held the potentialities of mind1 life1
 and phenomena4  ,in every  aggregation 
of atoms1 there were the four planes1   
each in touch  through the ,cosmic      
,mind1 its manasa1 with other atoms in  
the  universe1 with every other globe of
 whatever kind4  ,as above1 so  below1  
was the secret ,key-word4  ,the unity of
 all the material  universe in its      
prakriti1 ether1 prana and manasa1 was  
the corner  stone of this knowledge4    
,the three planes above prakriti were   
called ,astral1 and in common speech    
there was the ordinary  division into   
two planes1 visible and invisible1 or   
,spirit1 as  the invisible was called1  
and ,matter1 as the visible was  called4
  ,only in the hidden secret doctrine of
 physics1 and in  the open metaphysics  
which were a stumbling block and        
foolishness to those who had not the    

inner light of the  physics1 were the   
three divisions of the astral made      
known1 and  the true distinction between
 the spirit of the three higher  planes 
and the matter of the four lower was    
kept out of the  metaphysics1 or only   
vaguely alluded to4    ,there is no     
oriental science because the oriental   
does not  attach the same value to      
merely physical knowledge that we do4   
,but that must not be understood to     
imply that there is no  oriental        
physics4  ,in all the matters that      
interest us now1 as  far as principles  
are concerned1 the oriental knew all    
that we  know4  ,he knew it thousands of
 years ago1 when our ancestors were     
sleeping with the cave bears4    ,that  
is all the good it did him1 the         
scientist says4  ,no4  ,that  is not    
true4  ,it is perfectly true that the   
oriental1 the  ,babylonian who carved on
 the ,black ,stone now in the ,british  
,museum the five moons of ,jupiter1     
exposing himself to the  derision of our

 astronomers prior to their own         
discovery of the  fifth moon in #ahih1  
did not care particularly whether there 
were  four moons or five1 and had no    
sale for any telescopes he might  make1 
for no one else cared particularly4     
,but it was not true  that he did not   
care for any and all knowledge that     
would improve  his spiritual condition  
by giving him correct ideas of the      
universe and of his own part in it4  ,to
 him life was more than  meat and the   
body more than raiment4  ,he was more   
afraid of sin  than of ignorance4  ,we  
are more afraid of ignorance than of    
sin4  ,he preferred to better men's     
moral condition2  we prefer to  better  
their physical condition4    ,if one of 
the ,sages of the ,east could be called 
up and put on the  stand to be          
questioned1 he would say1 substantially3
    ,you are right in regard to your    
ether1 and to prakriti being  ether that
 has been dropped a great octave in     
vibration4  ,your  physical atom is     

surrounded by a molecule of ether1 this 
molecule  containing many atoms of      
ether4  ,the chording vibration does    
produce all physical phenomena4    ,but 
where did the ether atom come from8     
,how can you explain how  and whence    
life comes1 or what it is8  ,this       
explains physical1  but how do you      
explain vital phenomena8    ,you are    
wrong in assuming that all the matter of
 the universe  apart from the earth or  
planets is ether and only ether4  ,the  
etheric world in which you are          
interested ends with your solar  system4
  ,it ends with each solar system1 to   
the people of that  system4  ,between   
each solar system and another there is  
another  form of matter that is not     
ether4    ,this etheric solar world of  
ours is very large1 many billions of    
miles in diameter2  but it is not the   
whole universe4  ,you know  that the sun
 and all its planets are revolving      
around the star  ,alcyone4  ,your       
astronomers told you that years ago1 and

 they have  recently given you the rate 
of speed as #d1hch miles per hour4      
,did you not see and know that if they  
had this revolution around  a central   
sun it must be within a solar globe8    
,did you think that the sun and its     
planets1 and other suns and  their      
planets1 were tearing their way through 
the ether like so  many fish on a       
dipsy-hook from a ,marblehead fishing   
smack running  before the wind8    ,did 
it never occur to you that the ether of 
this solar system  must be revolving    
around this central sun8  ,the whole    
solar  system1 ether and planets1 are   
revolving around ,alcyone1 and the      
reason why their minor revolution around
 the sun is not affected  by it is      
because the solar system is a vast globe
 of ether1  having a thinner and rarer  
medium to revolve in1 the same as our   
earth has4  ,it is the motion of a fly  
in a moving car4    ,now fix your       
attention on this globe of ether1 this  
solar globe4  ,you must do it to get the

 concept before you4  ,you have known of
  it all your life without once really  
apprehending it1 for you  have never    
learned to think1 or to utilize the     
knowledge that was  given you4  ,the    
idea is as new and as strange as if you 
had never  known it4    ,what lies      
beyond the surface of the solar globe8  
,something  must2  something as much    
rarer and thinner than the ether as the 
ether is rarer and thinner than         
prakriti4  ,can you not guess8    ,it is
 ,prana1 the life force of the universe4
  ,as prakriti is  made from ether1 so  
ether is made from prana4  ,it is made  
in the  same way4  ,each atom of the    
ether is the centre of a molecule of    
prana1 surrounded by an atmosphere of   
pranic atoms1 exactly as  your prakritic
 atom is surrounded by an atmosphere of 
etheric  atoms4  ,you say that each atom
 of prakriti is the centre of a         
molecule of ether4  ,so it is4  ,but    
each atom of that etheric  molecule is  
the centre of a pranic molecule4  ,each 

atom of your  physical matter is triple1
 not double4    ,you say that all       
physical phenomena come from the        
chording  vibration of the etheric and  
prakritic atoms of the two planes of    
matter4  ,yes4  ,but do you not see that
 all vital phenomena come  from the     
chording vibration of the pranic1       
etheric1 and prakritic  atom of the     
three planes of matter which are in each
 atom8    ,in the living leaf the three 
planes are sounding in chord in each    
atom of it4  ,in the dead leaf1 drying  
up and falling to pieces1  only the     
lower two are sounding in chord4  ,the  
silver chord has  been broken4    ,each 
atom of prakriti you say has the        
potentiality of some kind  of           
phenomenon4  ,we add 'and of life also4'
  ,the potentialities of  life are in   
every atom of prakriti4  ,even the atom 
of iron may  live in the blood4  ,it    
cannot become a part of any living      
organism until its prana is sounding the
 chord of life in unison  with the ether

 and prakriti--the threefold silver     
chord4    ,what is the centre of this   
prana8  ,it is ,alcyone4  ,there are    
other solar globes beside ours circling 
around ,alcyone1 and we  have been      
considering only our own solar globe of 
ether4  ,alcyone  is the centre of the  
prana in which they revolve as the sun  
is  the centre of our ether in which the
 planets revolve4  ,as this  prana has a
 centre around which we revolve with    
other solar  systems1 then it must have 
a center of gravity4    ,then this prana
 is a globe4    ,the prana does not then
 fill this material universe4  ,there   
must  be yet another form of matter     
rarer and finer than prana1 from  which 
prana is made1 as ether is made from    
prana and prakriti  from ether4  ,have  
we any other class of phenomena to      
explain1  except vital and physical8    
,yes1 there is a very important class1  
mental4  ,and here we have the          
explanation1 if we exercise our  reason4
    ,these pranic globes are floating in

 an ocean of manasa1 matter  in its     
rarest form4    ,each atom of prana is  
formed from manasa1 exactly as ether was
  formed from prana1 and each pranic    
atom in the universe is the  centre of a
 manasic molecule1 having an atmosphere 
of manasic  atoms4    ,so we are not    
exact in giving the prakritic atom three
 planes or  octaves of vibration4  ,it  
has four4  ,you merely surround it with 
etheric atoms1 and this is correct so   
far as it goes4  ,you only  wish to     
explain physical problems4  ,but there  
are other problems  to be explained1    
problems of life and mind1 and the same 
knowledge you have explains them as well
 as the others1 if you  simply avail    
yourself of it4  ,that you do not       
consider the atom  as four-fold instead 
of two-fold is your own fault4  ,i have 
not  told you anything you did not      
already know4  ,i have only asked  you  
to apply your present knowledge of      
physics to these problems  of life and  
mind1 and apply your reasoning powers4  

,the chording vibration in an atom of   
matter of    ,the two planes produces   
,force1 or phenomena    ,the three      
planes produces ,life--the silver chord 
,the four planes produces ,mind--the    
golden chord4    ,you say there is no   
gulf between the prakritic and etheric  
worlds2  that it is one continuous      
world2  and all its phenomena  are by   
continuity and not impact4  ,that is    
true1 but it is not  the whole truth4   
,there is no gulf to cross between the  
prakritic and etheric  worlds2  none to 
cross between that and the manasic4     
,the four  worlds are one great world1  
continuous1 interchangeable4  ,through  
the four as well as through the two1    
there is continuity and not  impact4    
,whether it is an atom or a world1 the  
four are there4  ,nothing1 no           
combination of atoms1 no matter of any  
kind1 however  small or large1 can exist
 in this prakritic world unless it has  
the four elements1 which from time      
immemorial our philosophers  have called

 ,earth1 ,water1 ,fire1 ,air1 meaning   
the four globes or  forms of matter in  
the universe4  ,we do not have to leave 
the  earth to live in the etheric globe4
  ,it is here4  ,nor do we have  to go  
millions of miles to reach the pranic   
globe4  ,it is here4  ,the problems of  
light and heat are no easier than the   
problems of  birth and death4  ,the     
pranic globe is within us2  within      
everything4  ,so is the manasic4    ,it 
is here on these higher planes that the 
chances for worthy  study are greatest4 
,at least we think so1 though you may   
not4  ,we live on the                   
manasic--pranic--etheric globe on       
precisely the  same terms that we live  
on this of prakriti1 and the problems of
  the three are equally open to us4     
,if there are any who care to follow up 
the line of thought ,i  have opened1 who
 care for the questions that interest us
 of the  ,east1 ,i will talk as long as 
they care to listen1 provided they  will
 not ask for knowledge that will give   

them power over others1  which cannot   
fail to be used for evil4    ,this is   
but a glimpse of ,hindu physics1 yet it 
has helped us in  the metaphysics4  ,we 
now understand the chain of globes--in  
part4  ,the earth is fourfold4  ,as each
 atom of the earth is  fourfold1 so     
their aggregations give us prakritic    
earth1 an  etheric earth1 a pranic      
earth1 and a manasic earth--in          
coadunition and not like the skin of an 
onion4  ,they are separate  and distinct
 globes1 each on its own plane4  ,it is 
four down and  three up for the ,angel  
entering matter1 whether from the       
outmost  boundary of manasic matter1 or 
the surface of the earth1 or the  cover 
of a baseball4  ,the chain of globes in 
the ,secret  ,doctrine represents the   
unity of the material universe4    ,the 
three-fold nature of the astral model is
 revealed1 and the  unity of all        
prakritic things4  ,but more than that1 
to many  minds1 will be the explanation 
it gives of why there are but four      

planes of vibration in matter2  that the
 highest form of  development in        
prakriti shows only four elements1      
prakriti or  body1 sensation or force1  
life1 and mind1 and that these last     
three1 present in all things in esse1   
become present in posse  when they work 
together harmonically4          ,chapter
 ,six    ,our ,place on ,earth      ,the
 next time our wise man from the east   
was asked to say a few  words and make  
his own topic1 he spoke1 perhaps1 as    
follows3    ,how large do you think the 
earth is8  ,you answer promptly1 #g1iab 
miles in diameter4  ,you are as far out 
of the way as you were in  supposing    
that our sun could be a centre of       
gravity of a lot of  planets revolving  
around it and around ,alcyone without   
being a  globe of ether4  ,now that it  
has been mentioned1 you see very        
clearly for yourself that it must be a  
solar globe of ether4  ,it  follows from
 one of your physical axioms4  ,when ,i 
tell you why  the earth is and must be  

about fifty thousand miles in diameter1 
you will see that it must be so1 and    
that you knew it all the  time1 but     
never stopped to formulate your         
knowledge4  ,you have  had the knowledge
 for three centuries without applying   
it4    ,it was in #afji that your       
greatest astronomer1 ,john ,kepler1     
announced as one of three harmonic laws 
by which the universe was  governed1    
that the squares of the times of the    
planets were  proportional to the cubes 
of their distances from the sun2  and   
that this law was true in physics and   
everywhere4  ,no one of your  scientists
 has had the wisdom to study out what it
 meant1 and for  three centuries1 for   
#bia years1 you have repeated his words 
like  so many parrots1 instead of using 
the key he gave you to unlock  the      
mysteries of the universe4  ,a corollary
 of his law is that  the planets move in
 their orbits because they are impelled 
thereto between the two forces1 and move
 in a mean curve between  them2  but it 

was not until #ahif that you discovered 
that the  mean between two forces is    
always a curve and never a straight     
line4  ,you have not a text book in a   
school today that does not  repeat this 
fundamental and absurd error--which you 
have known  for three centuries to be an
 error--that the motion resulting  from 
a mean between forces is in a straight  
line4  ,the curves  resulting here are  
not to be measured easily1 and are so   
large  that small segments appear       
straight lines2  and it was not until   
,carpenter demonstrated it              
mathematically that any one could       
believe it true4    ,there are two great
 forces in this universe4  ,your        
grandfathers  called them ,centripetal  
and ,centrifugal forces2  your fathers  
called them ,gravity and ,apergy1 names 
which still cling to them2  and you call
 them ,attraction and ,repulsion4    ,it
 was ,kepler1 not ,newton1 who          
discovered that ,attraction or  ,gravity
 was in inverse proportion to the square

 of the distance4    ,you know the      
meaning of this mystic phrase1 'as the  
squares of  the distance4'  ,you        
understand that it means the attraction 
at  two feet is only one-fourth the     
attraction at one foot2  at four  feet  
only one-sixteenth2  at eight feet1 only
 one sixty-fourth4    ,but who knows or 
cares for ,kepler's great law of        
,repulsion1 or  ,apergy8  ,that was that
 the 'square of the times are as the    
cubes  of the distance4'  ,it has lain  
fallow for centuries4  ,no one of  your 
western physicists has ever studied it1 
or tried to explain  it4  ,it remains   
just where ,kepler left it1 as the mere 
law of  orbital revolution of the       
planets only4    ,it is the key to the  
proper understanding of the universe4   
',the squares of the times are as the   
cubes of the distance'  means that all  
motion is the result of two forces      
acting upon  prakriti1 and that where   
the two forces are balanced1 or equal1  
the result in motion is a circle or     

ellipse1 the square of the  ,repulsion  
being equal to the cube of the          
,attraction to make them  equal and     
produce a circle4  ,in other cases they 
produce  hyperbola and parabola4        
,this is a little dry--nearly all       
fundamental knowledge is--but  the      
reward of patience is great4    ,the    
orbital speed of the earth is about     
#fj1jjj miles per hour4  ,the attraction
 of the sun exactly equals the repulsion
 created by  the motion2  more          
accurately1 the speed created by the    
repulsion4  ,the result of the two      
forces working together at exact balance
 is  a circle4  ,an ellipse is a circle 
bent a little1 and the ellipse  in which
 the earth actually moves comes from    
varying attraction  and repulsion4      
,kepler's second law covers that4    ,if
 the orbital speed of the earth were a  
mile less per hour1 or  even a foot     
less1 then the earth would wind up      
around the sun as  a dog gets wound up  
with his chain around a tree4  ,if this 

speed  were a mile more per hour1 then  
the earth would wind out1 each  year    
getting farther and farther away1 until 
finally it would be  lost4  ,when the   
speed is exactly proportional to the    
pull--that  is1 when it is as #a4f is to
 #b1--the result is a circular orbit1   
the eccentricity of which is caused by  
certain fluctuations in  the attraction 
and repulsion4    ,suppose a planet were
 to be placed so that it would have a   
time  of two years4  ,its distance from 
the sun would be #a4f that of the       
earth4  ,why8  ,because to get the time 
doubled we would have to  take the      
square root of #d2  and to get the      
distance the cube root  of the same     
number1 #d4  ,if you wish to be very    
exact the cube  root is #a4ehhi1 but    
#a4f is near enough for all ordinary    
work4    ,if you wanted to find out the 
distance of a planet revolving in  six  
months you would divide the earth's     
distance by #a4f4    ,in proportion you 
get any time or distance you may desire 

with  absolute accuracy4  ,the distance 
of any planet from the sun gives  its   
time1 or its time gives its             
distance--when that of any of  the      
others is known4  ,this law applies     
throughout the universe2  in everything 
and everywhere4  ,it is not a law of    
orbital  revolution alone1 but a law of 
all motion4    ,our moon has a time of  
#bi days and a speed of about #ej1jjj   
miles  per day4  ,if the speed were     
greater it would leave us1 if less it   
would wind up1 falling to the earth in  
the form of a spiral4    ,at what       
distance would it have to be to have a  
time of fourteen  days8 ,divide #bdj1jjj
 miles by #a4f4  ,a seven-day moon1     
would be  #a4f that distance4  ,and the 
exact distance for a one-day moon1  for 
a moon that would always be in the same 
place in the heavens1  moving as the    
earth revolved on its axis1 would be    
about #bd1iih  miles4    ,this gives us 
the line of #bd-;hour axial rotation1   
the true  surface of the earth1 and the 

sheer-line of prakritic matter4  ,beyond
 that line is the ether2  within that   
line is prakriti4    ,it is the line of 
no weight1 where gravity and apergy     
exactly  balance4  ,inside that line    
gravity exceeds apergy and everything   
revolving in less time1 or that time1   
must fall to the centre4  ,it is the    
true surface of any #bd-;hour globe of  
this size and  weight4  ,a moon to      
revolve around the earth in less than   
one day  must move faster than the earth
 to develop enough apergy to  overcome  
the attraction4  ,that phenomenon we see
 in the moons of  ,mars1 which are      
within its atmosphere2  within the      
planet itself4    ,we of the ,east      
learned this true size of the earth over
 six  thousand years ago1 from observing
 the moons of ,jupiter4  ,the  times of 
the first three are doubled4  ,we asked 
ourselves what  this meant and found    
that their distance was increased by the
  cube root of #d when their times were 
increased by the square root  of #d2    

that time was to distance as #a4f was to
 #b4  ,then we  applied the key1 and    
found it unlocked many mysteries4       
,the first lesson this taught us was    
that we did not live on the  earth1 but 
within the earth1 at the line of liquid 
and gaseous  changes1 where the three   
forms of matter meet and mingle and     
interchange with each other4  ,we lived 
at the bottom of a gaseous  ocean       
#ba1jjj miles above us1 and #d1jjj miles
 from the centre of  the globe4  ,it    
gave us an entirely new conception of   
the earth1  and of our place in it4     
,we saw that we lived in a narrow belt1 
or skin1 of the earth1  not more than   
#ajj miles thick1 perhaps not more than 
ten miles4  ,within this belt the       
prakritic elementary substances varied  
their  condition1 combined1 and made    
forms by increasing or decreasing       
vibration4  ,it was the creative and    
destructive zone1 the  evolutionary     
mother--the liquid level of the         
prakriti--the  seat of all physical     

phenomena4  ,fifty miles above1 the     
masses of  nitrogen and oxygen and argon
 were too cold to change their rate  of 
vibration4  ,fifty miles below the      
surface of the earth all  things were   
too hot for changes in vibration4  ,in  
this kinetic  belt1 between two static  
masses our bodies had been made1 and    
also1 in all probability1 all           
combinations of the elementary          
substances4  ,it was four thousand miles
 to the centre of the  static prakritic 
mass beneath us2  twenty-one thousand   
miles to  the surface of the static     
prakritic mass above us1 and the small  
kinetic belt between was only one       
hundred miles thick4  ,but we  had one  
consolation1 the prakriti we had was all
 kinetic1 and the  best in the whole    
mass4    ,the second lesson it taught us
 was that as the earth had been  made in
 the etheric globe1 in a corresponding  
skin or plane of  kinetic etheric       
energy1 with our ether the best of the  
solar  output1 that we ourselves were   

subject through our ether to the        
phenomena of that kinetic solar plane in
 precisely the same way  we now are to  
the phenomena of the kinetic prakritic  
plane4  ,once  rid of the fallacious    
notion that we were creatures of the    
surface of the earth1 once clearly      
conscious that we were  creatures of the
 interior1 of the bottom of this gaseous
 ocean1  then we could understand not   
only how the earth could be created  in 
this etheric globe1 but how we could be 
creatures of the solar  globe living on 
it4    ,when we learned that lesson1 and
 learned it well1 it dawned upon  us    
that we were living in the pranic globe 
at the same kinetic  level or plane of  
that globe1 the line where its solids   
and  liquids and gases mingled and      
passed from one state to another1  the  
kinetic belt in which our solar globe   
has been made1 and that  we were living 
as truly on that globe as we were on    
this  prakritic globe4  ,our position on
 each globe was the same4    ,and then  

the great truth came that we lived in   
the manasic  globe1 at the same kinetic 
level2  and that we lived our lives on  
the four globes simultaneously4  ,our   
bodies are fourfold4  ,every  atom is   
fourfold1 ready to respond in our minds 
to the vibrations  of the ,manasic      
world1 in our vitality to the pranic    
vibrations of  the pranic world1 in our 
nerves to the etheric vibrations of the 
etheric world1 and in our prakriti to   
vibrations of the prakritic  world4     
,each one of our bodies lived on its own
 earth globe1 for  there were four      
globes of this earth--in coadunition--in
 its  corresponding kind of globe4      
,the four earth globes became one globe1
 as our four bodies were  one body2  and
 the chain of four kinds of globes in   
matter became  one globe1 as the manasic
 with the others on it4    ,these four  
kinds of globes were the beginning and  
the end of  matter1 as we distinguish   
and know matter4  ,they were not the end
  of vibration2  or of planes of        

vibration2  or of realms beyond  this   
material universe2  but they were the   
limits of all that is  common to each   
and every atom of this lower plane of   
vibration4    ,it is upon this solid and
 perfect foundation of physics1 that    
accounts for and explains every kind of 
phenomena1 we have  constructed our     
metaphysics4  ,all that belongs to these
 four  lower planes we consider and     
treat as physics4  ,all that relates  to
 the planes beyond we consider          
metaphysics4  ,can you teach a  child   
equation of payments before he knows the
 first four rules8  ,you would not      
attempt such a task4  ,the first four   
rules are the  physics of arithmetic2   
all beyond is the metaphysics of        
arithmetic4  ,it flows out of them4     
,can you comprehend our system  of      
metaphysics until you have clearly and  
completely mastered our  physics8       
,would you not get into a fog at the    
very start8    ,there can be no system  
of metaphysics without a solid          

foundation  of physics4  ,the idea is   
unthinkable4  ,the one grows out of the 
other4  ,it is its life2  its fruit1 its
 flower4    ,you have no western system 
of physics4  ,your physics are without  
form and void2  patchwork1 constantly   
changing4  ,there is no  substantial    
foundation for any system of            
metaphysics4  ,what you  say or do in   
physics is fragmentary or chaotic4      
,it is perfectly true1 so far as you    
have gone through the first  invisible  
world of ether1 you are much more       
masters of detail  than we are4    ,we  
have not cared particularly for the     
minor details by which  explosives are  
made1 or metals obtained from oxides4   
,we have  preferred to push on into     
realms beyond as fast as we could1      
seeking first the ,kingdom of ,heaven   
and its ,righteousness1  knowing that   
when it was found all these things would
 be added  unto us4          ,chapter   
,seven    ,the ,four ,globes      ,that 
we live in the earth1 not on the earth1 

is one of the most  important of the    
facts of eastern physics in the study of
 its  metaphysics4  ,the mathematical   
and physical proof that the  physical   
earth is #ej1jjj miles in diameter      
should not be  passed over lightly in   
our haste to get on1 for the perfect    
understanding of all this fact implies  
makes easy the  comprehension of how we 
live etherically in the solar etheric   
globe1 of how we live pranically in the 
stellar pranic globe1 and  how we live  
manasically in the manasic globe4    ,as
 we live within the narrow skin of      
phenomena1 not more than  #ajj miles    
thick1 of this prakritic globe1 with the
 whole earth  within the corresponding  
skin of phenomena of the solar etheric  
globe1 within the kinetic belt in which 
it was made1 the ether  which surrounds 
each prakritic molecule is not merely   
any and  every kind of ether1 but that  
particular kind of kinetic ether1       
which1 by changing its rate of vibration
 through an octave1  creates phenomena4 

,the ether of all prakritic matter      
belongs to  the kinetic or creative belt
 of the solar etheric globe4  ,it is    
not static ether4  ,the ether in our    
prakriti is in touch with all  the      
prakritic kinetic ether of the solar    
globe1 subject to all  solar laws of    
change2  and all our prak-solar laws of 
change2  and all our prakritic matter1 a
 mere detail of it1 is a part of  the   
solar phenomena4  ,our father1 the sun1 
or ,dyaus pitar  7heavenly              
father--,latin1 ,jupiter7 meant more    
once than it does  now4  ,then the solar
 globe was the first heaven1 and to live
  under its laws1 puttings off the coat 
of skin1 was an object  which men       
believed to be worth striving for4      
,they recognized1 as  we do not1 that   
our prakritic laws were not all they had
 to obey2  that the higher law of the   
solar globe on which they lived1 of     
which the lower prakritic laws were     
merely an outcome and detail1  was      
worthy of the closest study4  ,and they 

recognized that these  higher laws of   
the etheric globe were metaphysical as  
well as  physical2  that our moral law  
flows out of the moral law of the  solar
 etheric world1 as our physics flow from
 and out of solar  physics4  ,religion  
is correct in its assumption of this    
higher  law of morals2  incorrect only  
in its grasp and explanation4  ,science 
is correct in holding only in its       
assumption that it is  physical science2
  incorrect only in its assumption that 
it is  physical science of this plane   
and globe only4  ,there is no  quarrel  
between science and religion when the   
full knowledge of  one stands beside the
 full knowledge of the other4  ,they are
  twin-sisters4    ,this solar-etheric  
globe in which we are interested        
revolves  around ,alcyone within that   
kinetic belt or skin of prana which is  
subject to phenomena or vibration       
through one octave--else it  would never
 have been formed4  ,all prana in the   
solar-etheric  globe is of this         

particular kind of kinetic prana1 which 
creates  life of all kinds--which is    
subject to vibration through one        
octave4  ,the solar globe is a detail of
 kinetic prana only1 one  of its        
phenomena4  ,necessarily1 all our prana 
is of this kinetic  kind1 and our earth 
a minor detail of it in the ,alcyone    
globe4  ,all the changes and            
combinations possible in kinetic prana  
on the  pranic globe are possible here1 
in our kinetic prana1 as all the        
phenomena of the etheric world are      
possible here in our kinetic  ether4    
,as our earth is a globe of ether and a 
globe of prana as well as  a globe of   
prakriti2  we are actually living on a  
small cabbage  of that pranic globe1 and
 subject to all its laws4    ,in the    
vast manasic globe that includes this   
whole material  universe there is the   
same kinetic belt or skin of phenomena  
or  vibration similar to that kinetic   
belt in which we live on the  earth1 and
 the manasa which permeates the         

,alcyonic globe1 the  solar globe1 and  
the earth is that kinetic manasa which  
is  involving and evolving4  ,this      
involving and evolving kinetic  manasa  
of the ,alcyonic globe is that which    
surrounds every atom  of ether of the   
solar globe and every atom of prakriti  
of this  earth globe4  ,in the great    
manasic globe this earth of ours is a   
minute village of ,helios 7sun7 county1 
in the state of ,alcyone4  ,we are      
actually and literally living in this   
manasic globe  precisely as we live in  
this earth1 and as in the village we are
  subject to all the laws of the manasic
 world1 we can study them  here in this 
village as well as we could elsewhere4  
,we can study  them as easily as we     
study our prakritic village laws1 or our
  etheric county laws1 for all the forms
 of manasa subject to them  anywhere are
 here with us4  ,we are not limited to a
 study of the  prakritic laws of the    
village fathers1 nor yet to the etheric 
laws of the supervisors of ,helios      

county1 as scientists say1 nor  even to 
the state laws of ,alcyone2  only the   
manasic laws of the  ,universe limit our
 material studies in that direction4    
,as some  men on this earth never leave 
their native village and never know  or 
care for any matters outside of it1 so  
in this little earth  village1 in the   
kinetic belt of the manasic globe1 there
 are men  who do not care to know       
anything which relate to matters outside
  its boundaries4  ,as some men may pass
 the boundaries of their  village1 but  
not of their county1 caring only for the
 matters  concerning it1 so the western 
scientists of this earth village on  the
 manasic globe do not pass the          
boundaries of ,helios county1  caring   
only for etheric matters4  ,the         
philosophers and wise men  of the ,east 
are broader minded and from time        
immemorial have  taken greater interest 
in the pranic affairs of ,alcyone and   
the  manasic condition of the universe  
in which ,alcyone is a state  than in   

the rustic murmur of their village or   
the gossip of their  county4    ,there  
is nothing lacking in our manasic       
earth-village1 nothing  that is in more 
abundant measure in our county1 state1  
and  nation4  ,we are of the best4      
,we of this village may imagine1 if we  
like1 that there is nothing  beyond the 
village limits1 and nothing in it but   
that which  relates to the village4  ,we
 have the right to be silly1 if we  wish
 to be4  ,and it is no sign of wisdom to
 say that there is a  county beyond1 but
 that the county boundaries end all1 and
 only  village and county politics may  
be studied4  ,the ,european who         
believed--no ,asiatic or ,african or    
,american could have believed  --that   
the earth rested on an elephant and the 
elephant on  a turtle was wise1 in      
comparison4  ,nor is it any sign of     
intelligence to say that we may learn   
something of the village  and county    
while we live1 but that to learn        
anything about the  state and nation we 

must wait until we are dead4  ,there are
 too  many in the village who are       
familiar with both state and nation1    
and who have studied their laws1 for    
this to be anything but  idiotic4       
,chapter ,eight    ,the ,battle ,ground 
,each and every one of our eighty-odd   
elementary substances owe  their        
condition--whether solid1 liquid1 or    
gas--to their rate  of vibration4  ,we  
have reduced all gases to a liquid and  
nearly  all to a solid form4            
,conversely1 we have raised all solids  
to a  liquid and nearly all to a gaseous
 condition4  ,this has been done  by    
reducing or raising the vibration of    
each within one octave  --each one of   
the eighty odd having a special octave1 
a tone or  half-tone different from any 
other4  ,normally1 the solids1          
vibrating in the lower notes1 gather    
together under ,attraction2  while the  
gases1 vibrating in the higher notes1   
diffuse under  ,repulsion4  ,between    
them1 created by the interchange of     

these two  forces1 is our skin of       
phenomena1 or kinetics4    ,broadly1 the
 attraction of the universe comes from  
its vibration  at certain centres in the
 three higher notes2  the repulsion     
comes from its vibration everywhere else
 in the three higher  notes4  ,the      
central note1 ,d of the scale1          
represents the battle  ground between   
the field of kinetics4  ,this in simple 
illustration is water turning into gas4 
,this is the great battle ground1 the   
only one worth considering  in a general
 view4  ,there are minor critical stages
 which the  chemist studies1 but for us1
 in this broad sketch of the  universe1 
the important battle-ground is that     
between solid and  liquid on one side   
representing gravity1 and gas on the    
other1  representing apergy4    ,all the
 solids and liquids of this earth of    
ours gather at the  centre1 in a core1  
each of the elements 7or their          
combinations7  in this core vibrating in
 their three lower notes1 producing the 

attraction1 which is in proportion to   
the mass and which  decreases from the  
surface of the core as the square of the
  substance4    ,around this central    
core gather all the elements vibrating  
in the  three higher notes of their     
octave as gases1 producing repulsion    
which increases by #a4f for each doubled
 time4  ,it is worth while  making this 
clear4  ,it has never before appeared in
 print4    ,let the amount of apergy1 or
 repulsion1 or centrifugal force at  the
 surface of the earth be represented by 
x4  ,this is the result  of motion at   
the rate of #a1jjj miles per hour4      
,make this motion  #b1jjj miles per     
hour1 and the apergy is increased #a4f4 
,four  thousand miles above the surface 
of this earth the rotation  is at the   
rate of #b1jjj4  ,it is the globe of    
#dh1jjj miles in  circumference         
revolving in #bd hours1 and the speed is
 doubled4  ,this apergy has increased by
 #a4f4  ,as the apergy increases at     
this rate every time the speed is       

doubled1 at a distance  of #ba1jjj miles
 the speed is #g1jjj miles per hour and 
the  centrifugal force has been         
increased nearly four times what it  was
 at the surface of the ocean4  ,the     
attraction has been  decreased to about 
one-thirtieth4  ,at the surface it is   
equal to  #abj x4  ,at #d1jjj miles to  
one-quarter1 or #cj x2  at #af1jjj miles
  to one-sixteenth1 or #g x2  and at    
#ba1jjj miles to #d x4    ,if equatorial
 gravity is about #abj times that of the
 equatorial  apergy1 at the ocean level1

from it1 in a revolving globe1 the two  
forces would be equal2  the pull of each
 being #d x1 and an anchor will weigh no
 more  than a feather1 for weight is the
 excess of gravity or apergy4    ,if the
 pyramids had been built of the heaviest
 known material on  the gases #ba1jjj   
miles above us1 and so that they should 
revolve  in the same time1 #g1jjj miles 
per hour1 they would remain there4  ,all
 the attraction of the solid core of the

 earth that could be  exerted on them at
 that distance would not be enough to   
pull them  an inch nearer to it through 
our gaseous envelope4  ,their gaseous   
foundation there would be as firm as    
igneous rock here4    ,the force of     
repulsion created by the three higher   
notes of an  octave means just as much  
at the attraction created by the three  
lower notes1 whether it is in a chemical
 retort1 within this  earth1 or within  
this universe4  ,the two forces balance1
 and are  exactly equal4  ,they fight   
only within kinetic zones4    ,given the
 vast manasic globe of differentiated   
matter1 its atoms  uniting in different 
numbers to form molecules as the bases  
of  elementary substances1 manasic      
substances1 of course4  ,the thrill  of 
vibration is sweeping through it from   
the spiritual plane  above1 and the     
elements 7and their combinations7 which 
answer in  the lower notes gather and   
form a core1 the ,invisible ,central    
,sun1 with its attraction4  ,the        

elements answering in the higher  notes 
gather around it with their repulsion4  
,so the two opposing  forces were born1 
with a vast kinetic skin for a          
battle-ground  between them4    ,the    
attraction of the invisible central sun 
manifests itself to  us in prakriti as  
,light4  ,the repulsion of its covering1
 or the  higher static vibration of     
manasa1 manifests itself to us as       
,darkness4  ,the first creative act in  
or on matter was the  creation of ,light
 and its separation from the ,darkness4 
,the next  creative act was the         
establishment of a kinetic skin or zone 
between them1 a firmament in which the  
two forces of ,light and  ,darkness     
could strive for mastery4  ,and ,god    
called the firmament  ,heaven4  ,the    
third creative act was the gathering of 
the solids  and liquids together1 and   
the beginning of the kinetic work in    
the creation of forms and shapes1 by the
 cross play of the two  forces in their 
combinations of solid with gases4       

,all this had to happen before the      
manasa combined and dropped in          
vibration to prana--and before the      
pranic globes were formed and  the      
,light could be manifested to us through
 them4  ,it may be well  to read the    
first chapter of ,genesis over and ask  
forgiveness for  our ignorance1 from the
 writer who records this creation of the
  pranic globes as the fourth act of    
creation1 and the creation of  the      
etheric sun and prakritic moon to follow
 that4  ,that record  is mutilated1     
fragmentary2  but the writer of it knew 
the facts4  ,if we had the full story1  
instead of a sentence here and there1   
taken from an older story not to tell of
 creation but to hide  another tale for 
the priest1 the writer of ,genesis would
 laugh  last4    ,but let us return to  
the kinetic skin of energy between      
,light and  the ,darkness--the firmament
 which ,god calls ,heaven--the battle   
ground for gravity and apergy1 or       
attraction and repulsion1 or  good and  

evil1 or the powers of light and        
darkness4  ,this skin is  like that of  
an onion1 thickest at the equator and   
thinnest at  the poles--not only on this
 earth but in the solar1 alcyonic1  and 
manasic globes4  ,the equatorial belt1  
where phenomena are  richest in the     
manasic globes1 we call the ,milky ,way2
  in the  solar globe we call it the    
plane of the ecliptic2  and on the      
earth1 the tropics4  ,modern science has
 not yet found it in  ,alcyonic         
globe--because it has never thought of  
looking for it4    ,this division of the
 ,light from the ,darkness was all that 
was  required for evolution on the      
manasic globe within the kinetic  belt4 
,this evolution was not confined to the 
making of a few  alcyonic or pranic     
globes4  ,it was 7and is7 a great and   
wonderful  evolution beyond words and   
almost beyond imagination4  ,it is the  
,heaven which mankind has longed to see 
and know4  ,the writer of  ,genesis     
mixed it with the creation of this      

earth1 using earthly  metaphors4        
,before finding fault1 we should better 
his language4  ,we have not the words in
 physics to do it1 and must wait for our
  metaphysics4  ,but of one thing we may
 be sure1 that the pranic-  alcyonic    
globes here and there at the sea level  
of the manasic  globe--in what ,god     
calls ,heaven--amount to no more on that
  globe1 or in ,heaven1 than so many    
balls of thistle-down blown  across a   
meadow do on this earth of ours4        
,everything that can be  created in     
thought must be there4  ,it is in       
thought only1 but in  thought it is     
differentiated as sharply as anything in
 prakriti4  ,the manasic world1 the     
,heaven of the ,bible1 is as real as our
 own  world can possibly be2  in fact1  
more real1 for when ours is  resolved   
back into its final elements1 it will be
 but the dust  of the ground of the     
manasic world4    ,the pranic globes    
created in this manasic skin by ,sound1 
or the  ,logos1 or vibration1 evolved in

 identically the same way--with a       
central static core and an outer static 
envelope1 of low and high  vibration in 
prana1 creating attraction and          
repulsion1 or gravity  and apergy4  ,the
 kinetic skin between1 in which these   
forces play  in the pranic world1 makes 
a real1 not an imaginary pranic world1  
though but a faint reflection of the    
manasic4  ,when our father1  the        
,central ,invisible ,sun1 transfers his 
attraction to these  alcyonic suns1 the 
,light has something in which to        
manifest  itself1 and we see this       
manifesting core and call it ,alcyone1  
and its manifestation ,light2  but light
 in its last material  analysis is but  
the static mind or thought vibrating in 
the three  lower notes of the octave4   
,chapter ,nine    ,the ,dual ,man       
,within the alcyonic globes of          
differentiated pranic-manasic atoms  the
 vibration divided them also into       
solid-liquid cores and  gaseous         
envelopes1 and a kinetic skin of        

phenomena4  ,and then a  new world--a   
world of ,life1 came into material      
existence4  ,all  the atoms of thought  
or manasa1 surrounding each and every   
pranic  atom1 and making its molecule of
 energy1 so to speak1 were that         
particular kind of kinetic manasa ready 
to change its rate of  vibration within 
an octave1 and the forms prana assumes  
from the  action of thought within the  
kinetic belt were living and  thinking4 
,each pranic globe1 which was a small   
state of product  of the manasic1       
consisted of two globes in              
coadunition--two in  one4  ,each pranic 
atom was the centre of a manasic        
molecule and  represented the universe4 
,all things were two in one1 created by 
harmonic vibration between them1 and    
existence by the greater  strength of   
the lower notes1 or attraction4  ,it was
 at once less  and more wonderful than  
the manasic world--a specialized form of
  it4    ,when within this kinetic belt 
of the prana the etheric solar  globes  

formed here and there1 they were three  
fold1 each atom of  the new plane of    
matter having its surrounding envelope  
of prana-  manasa--a specialization of  
the pranic world in which 7what we      
call7 force had been added to life and  
mind4  ,the static ether1  vibrating in 
each of its elements through one octave1
 divided  into central core 7our sun1   
and other suns7 and outer covering1     
with a skin or belt of kinetic energy1  
as above which developed  an etheric    
world4  ,all things on this etheric     
world were caused  by the harmonic      
vibration between the etheric atoms and 
their  surrounding envelopes1 except    
that while all things in this  etheric  
world must have life1 not all need have 
mind4  ,the chord  of three was not     
necessary to create2  the chord of two  
was  enough1 and the manasic atoms might
 cease to vibrate in chord  with the    
prana and ether without affecting the   
creation4  ,only in  the etheric world  
7and below it7 could there be living    

mindless  ones4  ,to the etheric globes 
the stellar pranic cores transferred    
their light1 which manifested itself in 
the solid static ether as  ,attraction  
and in the gaseous static ether as      
,repulsion1 within  the kinetic skin of 
each etheric world more specialized and 
less  varied than the pranic4    ,our   
sun is not of prakriti1 but of static   
ether1 composed of the  separate and    
individual elementary substances of the 
ether1 and  their compounds vibrating in
 the lower notes of their octaves4  ,it 
is our father1 not our elder brother4   
,its envelope of static  ether in which 
the planet revolves is composed of the  
elementary  substances and combinations 
vibrating in the higher notes of  their 
octave4  ,the light transferred to this 
etheric globe from  its mother1         
,alcyone1 manifests itself in the lower 
vibration of  the sun as ,attraction2   
in the higher vibrations of its envelope
  as ,repulsion1 and within the kinetic 
skin wherein these forces  play1 the    

prakritic globes1 planets1 were born4   
,take our earth4  ,each atom is         
fourfold--whether of the static  core or
 of the static gaseous envelope4        
,creation on it is  limited to the      
kinetic skin1 wherein the attraction of 
the lower  and repulsion of the higher  
notes in each octave of vibration  have 
full play4  ,all things on it must have 
come from the  chording vibrations of   
the atoms of the prakritic elementary   
substances and their envelope of ether4 
,they may or may not have  life or mind 
the ether atom may have lost its chord  
with its  pranic envelope1 or the pranic
 envelope may have lost its chord  with 
the manasic2  but the combination must  
have force or energy  within it4  ,it   
may have lost ,mind and ,life in        
acquiring it1 or  after acquiring it2   
but it had to have life before it could 
become prakriti4    ,all things in the  
prakritic world flow from the ,life of  
the  etheric and the ,mind of the pranic
 worlds4  ,everything in the  etheric   

world has life1 and our unconscious     
personification or  vivification of     
etheric life transferred into fauna or  
flora1  or into force of any kind1 has a
 natural explanation4  ,the  thrill of  
vibration in one octave through the     
differentiated  consciousness of the    
universe by which the light was         
separated  from the darkness1 the lower 
from the higher1 was all that was       
required to create each star and sun1   
and world1 and all that in  them is4    
,and it was all good4    ,each thing on 
every lower world was but the           
translation into form  of the type of   
the next world 7or plane7 above4  ,as   
each element  on this prakritic type1 so
 each combination of those elements     
into crystal or tree or animal is but   
the translation4  ,the  normal earth    
from the crystal to 7the animal7 man was
 pure1 and  clean1 and holy4  ,sin had  
not entered4    ,how did it come8    ,on
 the vast manasic world there was a     
special creation--that  of the ,angel   

,man4  ,the three planes of ,spirit     
above were  undifferentiated            
consciousness1 but they were in         
different  octaves of vibration1 and    
these working on the three highest      
forms of differentiated consciousness   
7manasic matter7 brought  them to       
chording ,vibration so that when they   
combined and reached  their highest     
point in evolution they created the     
,angel 7or  manasic7 man4  ,he was the  
product in kinetic manasa of the three  
spiritual planes above him1 precisely as
 the animal man was the  product in     
kinetic prakriti of the three material  
planes above  him4  ,the latter was the 
shadow of the other4    ,the ,angel-man 
had a material 7manasic7 body1 but his  
energy life1  and mind were spiritual4  
,the animal man had a prakritic body1   
with energy1 life and mind that were    
material4    ,so far all was good4      
,the animal man has four bodies--one of 
prakriti1 one of ether1  one of prana1  
and one of manasa4  ,it may be true1 and

 probably  is1 that his manasic body is 
not sounding in chord with his          
prakritic body1 but only with those     
atoms of it which are in his  brain and 
nerves2  but that is immaterial--for    
future  consideration4    ,the ,angel   
man had but one body1 of manasa1 in     
which the spirit  dwelt2  but that body 
was identical in substance with the body
  that made the mind of the animal man4 
,his manasic body joined  the manasic   
body of the animal man1 joined with it  
by entering  into the animal man's mind1
 as easily as water from one glass is   
added to water in another glass1 and the
 animal man became a  living soul1      
endowed with speech1 while the          
,angel-man was given  a skin coat4      
,the prakritic body of the animal man   
was the result in prakriti  of an       
etheric-pranic-manasic1 or astral body1 
formed in  accordance with the          
,universal ,law4  ,for what he was by   
nature1 he  could not be blamed4  ,he   
stood naked and not ashamed before the  

,radiance4  ,he did not make his astral 
body2  he was the mere  translation of  
it into prakriti1 as all other created  
things  were1 and that invisible astral 
self 7figuratively7 stood at his  right 
hand1 moulding and shaping him4    ,but 
when the ,angel-man entered his mind1   
all this was changed4  ,he knew ,good   
from ,evil4  ,to his mind of manasa had 
been added  the ,spirit--the            
,atma-,buddhi's ,consciousness of the   
three  ,spiritual planes4  ,he has      
become as one of us1 said the ,angel-   
men of the firmament1 of ,heaven4  ,he  
now held the seven planes  and was a    
creator4  ,each thought and desire that1
 when an animal  only1 fell harmless1   
now created on the pranic and etheric   
world4  ,soon beside him1 at his left   
hand 7figuratively7 there grew up a     
second etheric or astral body1 that of  
his desires2  and his  prakritic body   
was no longer the product of the astral 
body on  his right hand4  ,it was the   
joint product of the left-hand ,kamic   

astral body he had created1 and the     
right hand normal astral  body4  ,he was
 no longer in harmony with the          
,radiance4  ,he could  no longer face   
it4  ,he had created discord--,sin4     
,the pretty legend of the two ,angels1  
one on the right hand and  one on the   
left1 has its physical basis in this    
truth1 but1 of  course1 as a matter of  
actual fact1 the normal and abnormal    
astral bodies are in mechanical union4  
,it is the ,kamic self-made  astral body
 that remains from one incarnation to   
another1  producing in joint action with
 a new normal astral body1 a new        
physical body for the ,inner-,self1 or  
,angel taking the pilgrimage  through   
the lower world4    ,all the ,angel-men 
did not enter the animal men on the     
pranic  etheric-prakritic globes2  only 
a few4  ,it was a pilgrimage  through   
matter in which those who make it are   
meeting many  adventures1 but the       
legends are many1 and have no place in  
the  physics1 although the legends are  

all founded on the facts of the         
physics4    ,of the number of monads1   
willing to undertake the pilgrimage1    
only a few of those within the kinetic  
belt of the manasic globe  have reached 
the pranic4  ,only a few of those within
 the pranic  kinetic belts reached the  
etheric4  ,and of all who have reached  
this earth1 only a few may win their way
 back before the great  day             
,be-,with-,us4    ,the problem of man1  
and his relations to the universe1 are  
an  entirely different line of study    
from that of the ,spiritual  ,monad1 the
 over-soul of every prakritic atom4     
,each prakritic  atom has what may be   
called a soul1 its three-fold astral    
cause2  and an over-soul1 or the        
three-fold spiritual archetype1 or      
causeless cause4    ,every combination  
of these atoms1 whether a knife1 a leaf1
 an  animal1 an earth1 a sun1 or a star1
 has this soul and oversoul4    ,once   
the idea of what is meant by these terms
 becomes clear1 the  difficulty in      

understanding them vanishes4  ,the study
 of man is  physical in its lower       
branches2  metaphysical only in its     
highest  and last analysis4  ,the study 
of the ,monad is metaphysical from      
start to finish4  ,the two studies are  
apt to be confused1 because             
metaphysically they are often joined for
 study1 the teacher  taking it for      
granted that the pupil fully understands
 the simple  and easy physics of the    
problem of humanity4    ,this1 in crude 
and bold outline1 is the story of       
creation to the  fall of man according  
to the ancient physics1 translated into 
the  words and phrases of modern        
physics4  ,the latter1 in the latest    
discoveries of modern science1 seem to  
have stolen a shive  from the ancient   
loaf in the expectation that it would   
not be  detected4  ,each and every step 
forward that modern science has  made in
 the past twenty years1 each and every  
discovery of every  kind in the physical
 field1 has been but the affirmative of 

some  ancient doctrine taught in the    
temples of the ,east before ,cain  took 
unto himself a wife4          ,chapter  
,ten    ,the ,septenary ,world      ,in 
the physical universe we have the four  
informing physical  globes1 so that as a
 whole or in its parts1 it is a string  
of  seven globes1 reaching from the     
highest spirit to the lowest  matter4   
,the awakened ,universal ,consciousness 
in vibration  --undifferentiated in the 
three globes above1 differentiated in   
the four globes below--in its last      
analysis is all one4  ,but there  is a  
gulf between matter and spirit1         
radically dividing them1 and  in the    
physical universe we are concerned only 
with physics and  physical laws1 until  
we reach its outmost boundaries and come
 in  touch with the spiritual planes    
beyond4    ,this is the view of the     
universe at first glance1 as in the     
smaller universe of this earth we at    
first see only its solid and  liquid    
globes4  ,and even after the discovery  

of the gas1 we do  not apprehend its    
important work in and behind the others 
until  it has been pointed out to us4   
,nor do we at first apprehend the  work 
of the spiritual in the material1 and   
the object of  metaphysics is to show1  
through the physics1 the connection     
between them that the spirit works      
through matter2  that where we  can see 
but four there are seven beads on each  
material string2  and that the last bead
 of each string is itself a chain of    
beads1  the chain of seven applying only
 to the seventh manifestation1  or      
prakriti1 while the strings apply to the
 way in which they  come4    ,on each   
unraveled string leading from our       
central sun down to a  planet there are 
seven beads corresponding to the seven  
globes in  the chain of each planet1    
each to each1 yet not the same4  ,there 
is a distinction1 and it is no wonder   
there should have been  confusion at    
first and a mixing of strings with      
chains4  ,the  physics as they progress 

will clear this confusion away4    ,in  
the manasic globe1 which is the first   
differentiation of that  which forms the
 spiritual globes above1 the resulting  
mind or  manasa is mainly the           
differentiated ,divine ,mind of the     
highest4  ,it has a chain of two globes 
only1 itself and the ,divine ,mind      
globe1 although its string of globes is 
four4    ,it is the perfected           
differentiation of the ,buddhi in manasa
  that causes the formation of the      
pranic globes1 which have  chains of    
four and strings of five1 and the full  
and perfect  differentiation of the     
,atma in manasa-prana that causes the   
formation of the etheric globes1 which  
have chains of six and  strings of six4 
,consciousness1 ,buddhi and ,atma are   
practically  the same as the manasa1    
prana1 and ether1 each to each1 only the
  latter are differentiated and the     
former are not4    ,each of the three   
astral globes is the reflection in      
matter of  the three spiritual globes   

beyond1 each to each1 and all to all4   
,the difference between matter and      
spirit is a difference in  ,motion only4
  ,both are vibrating1 so that both are 
in mechanical  motion1 from force       
without1 like the waves of the ocean1   
but only  the matter has what we may    
properly call motion of its own1 or     
that produced from within--from the atom
 and each organism of it  up to the     
,,all1 as the vibration is from the     
,,all down to the atom4  ,it is this    
centre of force in an atom1 this motion 
outside of  vibration1 or rather beside 
it1 which we call differentiation4      
,brinton's daring psychological         
speculation that mind was  coextensive  
with motion 7from organization7 was but 
a repetition  of one of the most ancient
 axioms4    ,take our solar etheric     
globe4  ,it has two other globes of     
matter1  consubstantial2  a globe of    
prana and a globe of manasa4  ,they  are
 not beyond it1 or beside it1 but one   
with it1 atom for atom4  ,but what are  

they in reality8  ,globes of ,atma1     
,buddhi1 and  ,consciousness in which   
the atoms1 having organized1 are in     
motion1 are they not8    ,let this      
motion in this material universe cease1 
and matter would  melt away and resolve 
into spirit4  ,from spirit it came1 to  
spirit it belongs1 and to spirit it     
returns4    ,behind each and every      
astral globe1 whether the globe be but  
an  astral atom1 or an astral planet1 or
 an astral world2  beyond its  physics  
there is a meta-physical globe1 its     
cause1 and that  is the real globe1 of  
which the astral is but a temporary     
phenomenon4  ,take a spiritual globe and
 differentiate it4  ,the  ,motion       
resulting produces a material astral    
globe4  ,stop the  motion2  bring it to 
a state of rest4  ,the astral shadow    
disappears4  ,it was merely spiritual   
phenomena4    ,each and every astral    
atom is a model in miniature of the     
material and spiritual universe4  ,each 
and every prakritic atom  is the joint  

result of spirit and matter united and  
working  together--of physics and       
metaphysics2  and in its last analysis  
pure spirit2  pure metaphysics4         
,behind each and every prakritic atom of
 our earth there are six  other atoms   
7or globes71 three material shadows and 
three  spiritual realities1 so that it  
is a string of seven--the whole         
universe in miniature--material and     
spiritual4  ,and all things  combined   
and formed on a prakritic base are a    
chain of seven  --whether a peach or a  
planet4    ,the chain belongs to the    
prakritic plane4  ,the lines of descent 
from the ,light through the star and sun
 to planet are strings4  ,the chains are
 beads of the same size strung on a     
thread4  ,the  strings are beads of     
different sizes strung on a thread4     
,the  beads of the chain are in         
coadunition--in the same space1 as gas  
in water and the water in a sponge4     
,in metaphysics this earth can only be  
regarded as a chain of  seven globes1   

its three astral globes in coadunition  
having their  three spiritual doubles4  
,of course no one of the higher globes  
can be seen by the prakritic eye1 but   
that is not to say the  astral world    
cannot be seen by the astral eye in     
sleep1 or by the  person who qualifies  
himself for the astral world1 through   
the  development of his astral body4    
,no upper globes of any chain in  the   
solar system can be seen1 says ,h4,p4   
,blavatsky in the ,secret  ,doctrine    
7vol4 ,i1 p4 #ahg71 yet she means by    
astronomers1 not by  sages4  ,and she   
does not mean the upper globes in the   
stellar  system of ,alcyone and its     
companions4    ,in pure physics the     
earth can only be regarded as a chain of
 four  globes consubstantial and in     
coadunition--four in and three out4     
,this makes seven1 and the metaphysician
 when talking physics uses  the         
metaphysical terms interchangeably and  
speaks of the chain  of seven globes    
meaning in one sentence the four        

material globes  making this earth2  in 
another meaning the line of descent or  
string of beads of different sizes      
reaching down from the ,divine          
,consciousness2  and in still another   
the seven beads or globes of  the same  
size in coadunition to form this earth  
chain4  ,to the  student who is         
thoroughly grounded in the eastern      
physics this  interweaving of the       
physical and metaphysical presents no   
difficulties2  but to the western mind  
just beginning the study  it is a       
tangle4    ,we can now see what is meant
 by illusion1 or ,maya1 and understand  
why such stress is laid upon it by every
 teacher4    ,take the physical side    
first4  ,the motion of a top gives it   
bands  of color to our eyes that it does
 not have at rest4  ,they are  temporary
 and not permanent1 a result of motion  
merely2  illusion  and not reality4     
,the motion of the material atoms of the
 four planes1 in harmony  with their    
vibration1 a motion the spiritual world 

does not have1  produces all material   
phenomena4  ,this is of course within   
the  kinetic belts1 for above or below  
them there is no change1 and  its       
phenomena are the mere change in        
relation of one atom to  another caused 
by motion4  ,the changes are not real4  
,they  disappear when the motion stops4 
,they have no existence in  matter above
 or below the belt4    ,all phenomena of
 every kind are as much an illusion as  
the  supposed bands of colour around the
 top4  ,the illusion is the  result of  
changes of relation in differentiated   
atoms caused by  their motion4  ,without
 this motion the four material globes   
would  dissolve into the atomic dust of 
the manasic world1 with all that  is    
within them4  ,the whole material       
universe is all illusion2  a  mere      
temporary relation of its atoms through 
motion1 without  ,reality or permanence4
    ,what then is real8  ,what is not   
illusion8  ,that which is beyond  the   
physical1 that which is its cause and   

root2  broadly1 the  metaphysical1 which
 is not the result of differentiated    
atoms  through relation4  ,what was real
 in the top is real here4  ,what  was   
illusion in the top is illusion here4   
,the meta-physical or spiritual 7the    
terms are interchangeable7  does not    
have to pass beyond the manasic globe to
 get on the  solid ground of reality4   
,the spiritual world is here in every   
physical atom and in every aggregation  
of them2  in every planet1  sun1 and    
star2  for they are seven1 each and     
every one1 not four4  ,behind the       
illusion of one atom or many1 whether   
here or on  ,alcyone1 there is reality  
and permanency in the undifferentiated  
cause1 the spiritual archetype1 the     
three higher beads on the  string which 
are the proper study of metaphysics4    
,chapter ,eleven    ,stumbling ,blocks  
in ,eastern ,physics      ,the ,western 
student of the ancient ,eastern physics 
soon meets  serious stumbling-blocks2   
and one at the very threshold has in    

the last half century turned many back4 
,in beginning his study  of the solar   
system1 the pupil is told3    ,the first
 three planets--,mercury1 ,venus1 and   
the moon--are dead  and disintegrating4 
,evolution on them has ceased4  ,the    
proof of  this is found in the fact1    
that they have no axial rotation1       
,mercury and ,venus always presenting   
the same surface to their  father1 the  
sun1 and the moon the same surface to   
its daughter1  the earth4    ,this is a 
concrete statement of physical fact at  
which the  ,western student protests4   
,if in the whole range of ,western      
astronomical science there is any one   
fact that he has accepted  as absolutely
 proved1 it is that ,mercury revolves   
once in #bd;h41  #em41 #cj4es41 and     
,venus once in #bc;h41 #bam41 #bbs4  ,he
 would as soon  credit a statement that 
the earth has no axial rotation as that 
,mercury or ,venus has none2  and if he 
continues his study of  ,eastern physics
 it is with no confidence in its        

accuracy1 and as  a matter of curiosity4
    ,the statement that ,mercury1       
,venus1 and the moon are dead  and      
disintegrating1 the former two always   
presenting the  same surface to the sun1
 is the basis for an elaborate          
superstructure1 both in the physics and 
the metaphysics of the  ,east4  ,it is  
used in physics to explain how the      
evolutionary  wave came to an end at the
 perfection of the mineral on ,mercury  
with the loss of its axial rotation2    
how the wave then passed  on to ,venus  
with the seed of the vegetable kingdom1 
where the  vegetable evolution ended    
with the loss of axial rotation2  how   
from ,venus it leaped to the moon1      
mother of animals and  controller of    
animal life1 with the seed of animal    
life in the  vegetable2  and how finally
 it came to the earth1 when the moon    
ceased to revolve1 bringing in the      
animal the seed of man4  ,here  man will
 be evolved and perfected4  ,man has not
 yet been born  on this earth1 they say4

  ,he is still in a prenatal or         
embryonic  condition within the animal4 
,the lunar ,pitris1 the men-seed1 have a
 physical reason for being1  if this    
evolutionary theory be true2  none if it
 is not4  ,axial  rotation is necessary 
in evolution1 the ancient physics       
teaches1  which must cease with it4     
,the reasons for this are too lengthy   
to give here4  ,briefly1 the rotation   
makes the electrical flow  and a        
thermopilic dynamo of each planet4      
,the ancient astronomical teaching is   
absolutely true4  ,there will  not be a 
work on astronomy published in ,europe  
or the ,united  ,states this year1 or   
hereafter1 that will not state that     
,mercury  and ,venus revolve on their   
axes in the same time that they  revolve
 around the sun1 which is another way of
 saying that  they have no axial        
rotation1 always presenting the same    
face to  the sun1 and an inaccurate way 
of presenting the truth4  ,the  screw   
that holds the tire at the outer end of 

the spoke does not  revolve once on its 
axis each time the wheel revolves4  ,run
 a  cane through an orange and swing it 
around2 the orange has not  revolved    
once on its axis4  ,nor does the stone  
in a sling  revolve once on its axis for
 each revolution around the hand4  ,the 
motion of ,mercury is identically that  
of the impaled orange  or the stone in  
the sling4  ,it has no axis and no axial
 rotation4  ,the modern astronomers1    
detected in pretenses to knowledge they 
never possessed1 let themselves down    
easy4    ,this discovery1 of no axial   
rotation by the interior planets1  made 
by ,schiaparelli and confirmed by       
,flammarion in #ahid1 has  since been   
fully verified by our ,western          
astronomers4  ,all the  new astronomies 
accept it4  ,but the admission of       
astronomical  error1 to speak politely1 
comes too late for the student it       
turned back from his study of ,eastern  
physics4  ,he cannot regain  his lost   
faith and lost ground4    ,thirty years 

ago ,proctor made it clear to ,western  
students that  the orbit of the moon was
 a cycloidal curve 7a drawn-out spring7 
around the sun1 the earth's orbit being 
coincident with its axis2  and that the 
moon was1 astronomically and correctly1 
a satellite  of the sun1 not a satellite
 of the earth4  ,this has been the      
,eastern view and teaching from time    
immemorial4    ,the ,eastern distinction
 between father ,sun and mother ,moon1  
and  the classification of the latter as
 a planet1 did not disturb the  ,western
 student4  ,he understood that4  ,it was
 the absolute  accuracy of modern       
astronomers in regard to the length of  
the  day on ,mercury or ,venus1 which   
the astronomers declared had  been      
corrected down to the fraction of a     
second1 that made it  impossible for him
 to accept the ,eastern physics when the
 latter  squarely contradicted his own4 
,this was but the first of many similar 
stumbling-blocks in the  path of the    
student of ,eastern physics4            

,few were the followers1 straggling far1
       ,that reached the lake of        
,vennachar2    and when they did1 this  
was what they had to face3    ,the      
planets absorb and use nearly all the   
solar energy--all  except the very small
 amount the minor specks of cosmic dust 
may  receive4  ,there is not the least  
particle of the sun's light1 or  heat1  
or any one of the seven conditions of   
the solar energy1  wasted4  ,except for 
the planets1 it is not manifested2  it  
is  not4  ,there is no light1 no heat1  
no form of solar energy1 except  on the 
planets as it is transferred from the   
laya center of each  in the sun to them4
  ,the etheric globe is cold and dark1  
except  along the lines to them--the    
,paths of ,fohat solar energy4  ,six    
laya centers are manifested in the sun2 
one is laid aside1  though the wheels   
planets around the ,one ,eye be seven4  
,this  alludes to the moon1 whose laya  
center in the sun is now also  that of  
the earth2  but it is considered as a   

planet4  ,what each  receives1 that it  
also gives back4  ,there is nothing     
lost4    ,that settles it1 says one     
student2  and the others agree4  ,of    
the hundred who started1         ,the   
foremost horseman rode alone1    before 
the next step was won4    ,in the light 
of the tardy but perfect justification  
of the first  stumbling-block1 this     
statement may be worth following out1 to
  see what it means1 and how absurd it  
can be4  ,an etheric  globe2  cold as   
absolute zero1 dark as ,erebus1 with    
here and  there small pencils of light  
and heat from the sun to the planets    
--just rays1 and nothing more--is a very
 different one from the  fiery furnace  
at absolute zero of the modern          
physicist4    ,on a line drawn from the 
center of the earth to the center of the
  moon there is a point where the       
weights of the two bodies are  said in  
our physics exactly to balance1 and it  
lies1 says our  physics1 #b1ijj miles   
from the center of the earth1 and #a1ajj

  miles from the surface4  ,this is the 
earth's laya center of  the ,eastern    
physics4  ,it is of great importance in 
problems of  life2  but it may be passed
 over for the present4    ,between the  
earth and the sun--precisely speaking1  
between this  laya center and the       
sun--there is a point of balance1 which 
falls within the photosphere of the sun4
  ,this point in the sun  is the earth's
 solar laya1 the occult or hidden earth 
of the  metaphysics4    ,a diagram will 
make this clearer4  ,draw a line from   
the laya  center in the sun to that in  
the earth4  ,draw a narrow ellipse1     
with this line as its major axis1 and   
shade it4  ,at each end of  the axis    
strike the beginning of an ellipse that 
will be tangent4  ,if positive energy is
 along the shaded ellipse1 negative     
energy  is in each field beyond--earth  
and sun4  ,this is a very crude         
illustration of a fundamental statement 
elaborated to the most  minute detail in
 explanation of all astronomical        

phenomena2  but  for the moment it will 
do4    ,the point is that along this    
axial line connecting the  laya centers 
play all the seven solar forces--light1 
heat1  electricity1 etc4--that affect   
the earth1 and on every side of  this   
line is the electric field of these     
forces4  ,to this line  any escaping    
solar energy is drawn1 as the           
electricity of the air  is drawn to a   
live wire or magnet4  ,but there is     
little or none  to escape4  ,from the   
laya point in the sun to the laya point 
in  the earth1 the solar energy is      
transferred as sound is carried  along a
 beam of light 7photophone71 or         
electricity from one point  to another  
without a wire4    ,to the advanced     
student of electricity the ancient      
teaching is  easily apprehended2  to    
others it is difficult to make clear4   
,these laya centers1 it says1 are the   
transforming points of  energy4  ,from  
the earth laya to the solar laya centre1
 the  energy1 we may say1 is positive2  

beyond both the solar and the  earth    
laya centre1 in the fields touching at  
them1 it is negative  --or vice versa4  
,the line connecting the layas is the   
,path of  ,fohat--the personification of
 solar energy4    ,this is a very crude 
and brief way of putting many pages of  
teaching1 but the important point is    
that this line between the  layas is one
 of solar energy1 with a dynamic field  
of solar  energy1 elliptical in shape1  
connecting with the reverse fields  at  
the laya points4  ,these dead points are
 the limits of each  electric field1    
which create1 we say in electrical work1
  opposing fields beyond them4    ,each 
one of these planets has its laya centre
 inside the sun's  photosphere4  ,each  
planet has a line of solar energy with  
its  field of solar energy--not only a  
wireless telegraph1 but a  wireless     
lighting1 heating1 and life-giving      
system4  ,these six  solar laya points  
are the six hidden planets1 the earth   
and  moon being one1 of the ancient     

metaphysics4  ,the moon is the one  laid
 aside4  ,in their reception of energy  
from the sun1 it is  as if the planet   
were at the solar laya point1 or        
connected with  it by a special         
pipe-line4  ,the position of these six  
planetary  laya points in the sun is    
indicated by the position of the        
planets in the heavens1 and they may    
often influence or modify  one another4 
,if ,mars1 ,jupiter1 or ,saturn is      
anywhere near  conjunction with the     
earth1 not only will a part of their    
fields be joined1 but their laya points 
in the sun will be  modified4    ,the   
physical basis of the old astrology was 
the physical  interferences of these    
fields of solar energy2  and what it    
depended on mainly in its work was the  
position of the six hidden  planets1 or 
laya centers1 which was shown by the    
position of the  planet with reference  
to the earth4  ,that the planets        
themselves  affected any one or anything
 on this earth1 no real astrologer  ever

 believed2  that their position in the  
heavens indicated  certain changes and  
modifications of the flow of solar      
energy to  the earth1 they knew from    
their knowledge of physics4  ,the       
twelve houses are in the sun1 says      
,hermes1 six in the north and  six in   
the south4  ,connect them with the      
zodiac1 and the  position of the planets
 shows the interferences of the solar   
currents4    ,the one objection to this 
ancient theory is that it does not      
present enough difficulties4  ,the      
present value to science of the  many   
theories in relation to the sun is the  
impossibility of  reconciling any two of
 them1 and the fact that no two         
theorists  can unite to pummel a third4 
,this ancient theory does not call  for 
any great amount of heat1 light1 or     
energy in any condition  to keep the    
,cosmos in order--not even enough for   
two persons to  quarrel over4  ,it      
merely turns the sun into a large dynamo
  connected with smaller dynamos1 and   

these with one another with  return     
currents by which there is nothing lost4
  ,in its  details1 it accounts for all 
facts--neatly1 simply1 and without      
exclamation points4  ,it is so simple   
and homespun1 so lacking in  the        
gaudiness that makes 7for example7 our  
light and heat less  than the billionth 
part wasted on space always at absolute 
zero1  that we may have to wait many    
centuries to have it verified and       
confirmed by our ,western ,science4     
,that it will be verified  in time1 even
 as the first stumbling-block has been  
removed at  the end of the nineteenth   
century1 its students may at least      
hope4    ,the lesson1 if there is one1  
is that the ,western student of         
,eastern physics does not ride an auto  
along asphalted roads4  ,he must own    
himself and not be owned by another man1
 or even  by ,modern ,science4
