,,says ,,so4 ,sarah ,g---- was one of several children1 living with their parents in a narrow lane in ,london4 ,early in the year #ahdg1 ,sarah's father had met with a serious accident1 and was then in the hospital1 where he remained for many weeks a severe sufferer4 ,sarah and her brothers1 deprived of the usual means of support1 and their mother being in constant attendance on her husband1 were consequently often left in great necessity4 ,more than once have these little ones been known to reach the hour of four or five in the afternoon1 before taking any food2 but amidst all their privations1 no complaint was heard from the lips of ,sarah4 ,it was not known until after her death1 how silently1 yet how powerfully1 the ,spirit of ,god was1 even at this time1 working in her heart4 ,there was nothing particularly attractive in her appearance2 quiet and unobtrusive1 she seemed to the outward observer like most other children2 but the ,lord seeth not as man seeth4 ,the ,great ,shepherd of the sheep had his eye on this little lamb of the fold1 and marked her for his own4 ,at home she was gentle and affectionate1 obedient to her parents1 and during their absence she watched kindly over her little brothers4 ,her poor family tasted largely of the cup of sorrow1 but poverty and distress1 instead of producing impatience and unkindness1 seemed to bind each one more closely to the other4 ,they experienced the truth of those words3 ,better is a dinner of herbs where love is1 than a stalled ox and hatred therewith1 ,prov4 #ae3ag4 ,better is a dry morsel1 and quietness therewith1 than a house full of sacrifices with strife1 ,prov4 #ag3a4 ,the death of her youngest brother appeared to make a strong impression on ,sarah's mind2 she said she liked to think she had a brother in heaven4 ,soon after that event1 she was admitted into a ,sabbath school1 and it was her delight in the week to prepare her lessons4 ,sunday is such a happy day1 she would say2 and on that morning she would rise earlier than usual to get ready for school4 ,a little circumstance1 which occurred at this time1 marked her tenderness of conscience4 ,a new bonnet had been promised to her1 but not arriving at the time she had hoped1 her disappointment was so great that she shed many tears4 ,this was mentioned to a friend1 who talked to her about it4 ,sarah made no remark at the time1 but afterwards she said to her mother1 ,i did not know before that it was wrong to cry when we were disappointed2 ,i will try not to do so again3 and in the evening her father overheard her begging ,god to forgive her pride and fretting about the bonnet4 ,another feature in ,sarah's character may be here noticed3 this was her love of truth4 ,she has never deceived me1 was her mother's frequent remark4 ,i cannot remember a single instance of untruth1 even in play1 and perhaps this truthfulness of spirit enabled her the more readily to trust the word of another4 ,she promised me1 ,sarah would say1 and on the promise she would ever rest1 in all the sweet dependence of a child4 ,surely this may speak a word to those professing to be the followers of ,him who keepeth his promise for ever--the covenant-keeping ,god4 ,how lightly are promises often made6 how carelessly and thoughtlessly broken6 ,sarah was only permitted to attend the ,sabbath school for a few weeks4 ,her health and strength failed1 and soon she was confined to her room1 then to her bed1 which she scarcely left for several months4 ,but now the work of ,god within her became more evident4 ,it was a pleasant service to sit by the bed of this young disciple1 and read and talk with her of a ,saviour's love4 ,she said but little1 except in answer to questions1 but her bright and happy countenance showed how welcome was the subject4 ,who that witnessed her simple1 child-like faith1 would not acknowledge the fruit of the ,spirit's teaching8 ,it was the more apparent1 as she had but little help from man1 and few outward advantages1 not even being able to read2 but she treasured up in her mind all she heard1 and it was as food to her soul1 the joy and rejoicing of her heart4 ,at an early period of her illness1 a violent attack of pain and palpitation of the heart made her think she was dying1 and she told her mother so1 adding1 ,but ,i am not afraid1 ,i am so happy4 ,what makes you so happy8 was asked4 ,because ,i am going to heaven1 and when ,i pray to ,jesus1 my heart seems lifted up4 ,but1 ,sarah1 do you think your sins forgiven8 ,yes1 mother1 ,i am sure so4 ,what makes you so sure8 ,because ,jesus says so4 ,jesus says1--this was ever the ground of her confidence1 and proved to all around her the ,saviour's oft-repeated lesson1--,whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of ,god as a little child1 shall in no wise enter therein4 ,sarah lingered many weeks after this4 ,her mind was full of peace2 as she lay on her sick bed1 no shade of fear passed over her1 all was sunshine within4 ,this one happy thought filled her mind1--,jesus loves me1 ,i am going to heaven4 ,a friend wishing to find out on what her hopes of happiness rested1 and if she had a real sense of sin1 said to her1 ,you talk much of going to heaven1 tell me1 do you deserve to go there8 ,oh1 no1 was her reply1 ,i do not deserve it4 ,why not8 ,in a solemn tone1 she answered1 ,because ,i have sinned4 ,it was remarked1 ,how then can you go there8 ,heaven is such a holy place1 no sin can enter there4 ,with the brightest smile she quietly replied1 ,ah6 but ,jesus says he will wash away all my sin1 and make my soul quite white1 and he will carry me there4 ,oh that all would learn of her thus to take ,jesus at his word6 ,what an enemy to peace is an unbelieving heart6 ,none spoke ill of this little girl1 even those who knew her least remarked1 she was a good pleasant child1 but her grateful affection beamed strongly towards all who showed her any kindness1 and one who watched her with interest throughout her illness1 will not soon forget the earnest smile of welcome with which she was always greeted1 when too ill to speak4 ,thus she told her thanks4 ,once1 the #ajc;d ,psalm was read to her1 with some remarks on ,david's causes of thankfulness4 ,it was remarked1 ,you1 too1 ,sarah1 have many things to bless ,god for2 for what do you thank him most8 ,she answered1 ,oh1 ,i thank him most for sending ,jesus from heaven to save me4 ,many were the words of comfort she spoke to her poor sorrowing mother1 whose heart at times seemed almost broken at the prospect of losing her4 ,she said1 ,you will not cry1 when ,i am in heaven1 dear mother4 ,i am only going a little while first1 and you will soon follow2 and once1 on an occasion of deep family distress1 she pointed to the surest way for relief1 saying1 ,mother1 why do you cry so8 ,does not the ,bible say ,god cares for the sparrows1 and are not you better than a sparrow8 ,o mother1 pray1 do pray1 and then you will be so happy4 ,so calmly1 so peacefully1 did this young disciple enter the dark valley1 that truly she might have said1 ,there's nothing terrible in death ,to those who go to heaven4 ,resting in her ,saviour's love she feared no evil1 his rod and his staff they comforted her2 sin was her only dread4 ,her only fear was that of offending her heavenly ,father1 and on this point she often did express much anxiety1 saying1 ,do tell me if ,i have done wrong4 ,i do not want to sin2 ,i am so afraid of making ,god angry4 ,sometimes my sins look so black1 and seem to come between me and ,god4 ,then1 as if she still felt secure in the only hiding-place for sinners1 she added1 ,but ,jesus says he will take them all away1 and wash me whiter than snow4 ,she delighted much in some little books suited to her age and circumstances that were read to her2 one entitled1 ,the ,infant's ,prayer1 and another1 ,the ,white ,robes1 were her greatest favorites4 ,in allusion to the last of these1 she often prayed1 ,o ,lord ,jesus1 hear a poor little girl1 do give me that beautiful white dress1 without one spot or one stain2 and once when her mother noticed a little hurt on her arm occasioned by her putting on a change of dress1 she sweetly said1 ,never mind that1 dear mother2 my next dress will not hurt me4 ,it was very pleasant to see the affection manifested by her brothers towards their little sick sister1 and she repaid their kindness by anxiously entreating them to care for their souls4 ,to her father she said1 ,i want you to promise me one thing--to meet me in heaven4 ,o father6 do love ,jesus4 ,i love him1 indeed ,i do2 but ,i want you to love him too4 ,there is only one ,jesus1 one ,saviour2 and1 father1 he is so holy4 ,then turning to her mother1 who was standing by her bed1 she added1 ,you do love ,jesus1 but1 ,o mother1 pray do love him more1 and more1 and more2 she spoke with such energy1 as if to impress her parents with her own feeling1 as almost startled them4 ,in this state of mind ,sarah drew near the end of her pilgrimage1 and it was not until about three days before her death that even the shadow of a cloud seemed to darken her path4 ,then1 for the first time1 her mind was agitated with doubts as to her ,saviour's love for her1 and very distressing to those around her were her anxious cries for pardon4 ,father1 forgive me1 for ,jesus ,christ's sake1 was her constant petition4 ,she was visited by a minister and by several ,christian friends1 who used every effort to give her relief1 but for some time all in vain2 she seemed unable to lay hold on any promise for her comfort4 ,one of these friends especially felt a deep interest in the dear child1 though she had not known her until now4 ,of her little ,sarah asked most earnestly1 ,do you think that ,jesus loves me8 ,she was assured that he did4 ,do you know he loves me8 she asked2 and then followed the solemn inquiry1 ,how do you know it8 ,after reading and talking with her for some time1 she begged her friend would pray with her to make her a little happy8 and afterwards in her own words1 she would again plead with ,god1 ,father1 forgive me1 for ,jesus ,christ's sake1 and wash me in his blood1 and make me a good girl1 and take me to heaven4 ,on one occasion she said1 ,i wish ,i could be a little happy1--,i want something1 ,i do not know what ,i want4 ,she was answered1 ,i think ,i can tell you what you want1 it is peace1 it is to feel that ,god has pardoned all your sins4 ,yes1 she replied1 ,i think that is it4 ,at another time1 when talking of the joys of heaven1 ,yes1 she said1 they are singing1 ,glory1 glory1 glory1 referring to her favorite hymn1 beginning1 ,around the throne of ,god in heaven1 ,thousands of children stand4 ,but1 as her friend says1 it is not possible to convey her manner1 her sweet tone and look4 ,she said1 ,i wish ,i could go to heaven now1 up through this ceiling1 now while ,i feel a little happy4 ,but1 my dear child1 you cannot go to heaven in this way4 ,you must die first2 ,jesus died2 we must all die2 it is ,god's appointed way for us to get to heaven4 ,oh6 ,i do not mind my sufferings1 but ,i wish ,i was there now4 ,once she spoke rather impatiently1 ,i wish ,i could die1 ,i wish ,i could die4 ,she was reminded1 ,jesus says1 ',if you love me1 keep my commandments2' and though you cannot obey ,god's will now in the same way as if in health1 you can still suffer all he appoints4 ,she quickly asked1 ,will ,jesus be angry if ,i am not patient8 ,i will try1 then1 and pray to him to make me patient4 ,satan for a short season seemed permitted to make trial of her faith and love1 and she struggled hard against his attacks4 ,but the dear little one was safe in the arms of her ,good ,shepherd1 and none could pluck her out of his hand4 ,her anxious prayers were heard and answered1 and peace was restored to her soul4 ,her brightened countenance required not the addition of words to assure her friends of this1 and yet they rejoiced to hear her say1 ,i am quite happy2 ,i know ,jesus loves me1 and ,i shall soon see him4 ,on the ,sabbath1 her last day on earth1 she was very feeble1 only able to utter a single word at a time1 but her heart was full of thankfulness towards all who had cared for her1 and especially to those who had sought to comfort her in her last distress1 begging her mother would always love them4 ,at night1 as her parents were watching beside her1 she suddenly raised herself1 and1 throwing her arms alternately round the neck of each1 seemed to take a last farewell4 ,she was unable to speak1 but to her mother's inquiry1 ,tell me once again1 my child1 are you quite happy8 she replied by lifting up her hand1 and pointing to heaven1 while the brightest smile lighted up her countenance4 ,this was her last act of consciousness4 ,she lingered a few hours without any apparent suffering1 and then her happy spirit took its flight1 and joined the blissful company1 that1 having washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the ,lamb1 are ever before the throne of ,god1 rejoicing in their ,saviour's love4 ,sarah died at the age of eleven years1 in ,august1 #ahdh4 ,dear reader1 before you close this book1 ask1 ,am ,i like ,sarah ,g----8 ,have ,i ever prayed to ,jesus to wash away all my sins1 and make my soul quite white in his precious blood8 ,and then have you begged him to take you to heaven when you die1 that you may be happy with him for ever8 ,if not1 do not wait another day1 but entreat him now to give you his ,holy ,spirit to teach you to love him4 ,remember1 it is this kind ,saviour who calls you1 who says1 ,suffer the little children to come to me1 and forbid them not2 and who promises to gather the lambs with his arm1 and to carry them in his bosom4 ,illustration
